We are where we are The UK and Germany drove much of the EU’s world leading environmental policies. The Brexit vote leaves everything up in the air, and most are not optimistic about how it will affect attitudes toward the environment and climate change. Many fear the vote is part of a growing global wave of populist nationalism, dominated by Donald Trump-like figures who will undermine decades of work toward unified action on climate. Wider questions relate to the rural environment. Environmental policy has been substantially driven by the European Union over the past thirty years or so, with major policies relating particularly to water quality and biodiversity. A UK government might choose to relax some of the standards that have been set in Brussels. The current EU-driven, UK household waste recycling rate target of 50% by 2020 has provided the underpinning for
hundreds of millions of pounds of investment into recycling facilities and energy recovery plants, creating to date thousands of jobs in the UK. The EU is now considering a 65% household recycling target for 2030 and if this becomes a legally binding target across member states – including the UK – it would stimulate further investment and jobs in the UK. Across the country, surveyors have reported a marked drop in activity in the housing market since the Brexit vote, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Shares in building firms have fallen since the referendum. The good news for our industry is that the British love of their gardens and gardening has been confirmed again by the extensive media coverage and the attendance at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows. If you are trying to sell a property the state of the garden
is crucial, if because of financial insecurity you are staying put but need more room, the garden can be used to increase living space. Sport will continue to be a national obsession – pitches will need updating and maintaining. Grass will grow in our gardens parks, roundabouts, motorway verges and will need attention. Landscaping is a great, essential industry that contributes to the quality of our lives and keeps our land green and pleasant. You are also about to read the biggest issue of The Landscaper since it started nearly 20 years ago. Hampton Court Flower Show, arborist special, lighting, artificial grass, weed control, irrigation, sprayers, mowers, hardscaper and horticulture – 84 pages packed with information. Have a good month.

PM Theresa May visits new store Leading trade supplier, Screwfix, was delighted to welcome PM Theresa May to its new Maidenhead store in July. Screwfix is one of the fastest growing retail businesses in the UK and opens stores at the rate of one a week. The new store, which opened in February, is one of the network of 470. Screwfix employs over 9,000 people across the UK. The new Maidenhead store will initially employ 17 people from the local area. Mrs May was given a tour of the new store where she met store staff. John Mewett, Marketing Director at Screwfix shared with Theresa some of the feedback from its trade customers and some of the key issues, opportunities and challenges facing people in the trades in the local area. John commented: “As a key supplier to the trade, we have a great relationship with our trade customers and can really help amplify their voice by getting their message across on
visits like today’s. “Many of our customers are busier than ever right now so it’s important we work closely with the wider industry and the Government to consider ways to help them and to encourage growth in their businesses.”
Seed meets Technology The third Seed meets Technology is even bigger than in previous years. This year the list of exhibitors has grown to nearly 40, so the show area has also been expanded. Interest in this event now extends beyond the Netherlands into the international seed market, so this year international companies will be showing their latest developments for the first time.
will be exhibiting their hydroponic growing system. Botman Hydroponics are constantly working on enhancements to their water-based production methods. Inside the exhibition hall, Visser Horti Systems’ fully automatic hydroponics system will be on display. Dry Hydroponics will show its breeding concept with cultivation ponds with lettuce on it, together with their ‘seed float’.
Vegetable trials The participating seed companies are Takii Europe B.V, ABZ Seeds, Bakker Brothers, Prudac and Ergon International. Sakata Vegetables Europe will also have a large platform on the other side of the road. These seed companies will be joining forces in the Vegetable Trials. There will also be several guided tours each day for growers, during which Takii, Bakker Brothers and Sakata will talk about their variety trials in the outdoor trial fields. ABZ Seeds will have strawberry racks on display in which they are growing a range of new varieties. Alongside these, Botman Hydroponics
Technology As in the past, this year’s event will feature plenty of companies exhibiting the very latest technology. LEBA and TeaL will be jointly demonstrating the film coater 500 with TeaL coatings and explaining how it works. Seed Processing Holland will be exhibiting the Optigrow Vitaliser used for seed priming. Optomachines (FR) will be demonstrating their seed counter and the OPTO AGRI automatic TSW measuring station, and besides their seed sower, SeQso B.V. will be presenting a compact sorting machine for sorting seed lots using chlorophyll signal analysis (ripeness). These are just a few examples of what you will see at Seed meets Technology. Every day there will be demonstrations showing exactly how the various machines operate. To give the visitor a true sense of involvement, the organisers ask all exhibitors to demonstrate new products or services which really have something to show. www.seedmeetstechnology.com

David Domoney and Carla Nash
Carla Nash, who works at one of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries has recently been announced as the Midland Regional Growers’ Apprentice of the Year. Carla, who is 25-years-old and works at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, was presented with the award at Hampton Court on Thursday, July 7 by TV gardener and broadcaster, David Domoney. Steve Reed, Container Division Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “During the past two years, Carla has proved to be an outstanding apprentice, all her college work has been completed on time and the feedback from assessors and nursery managers has been excellent.
Guaranteed microdochium patch control A new fungicide programme has been launched by Bayer for complete control of microdochium patch, more commonly referred to as Fusarium. Microdochium patch is one of the most damaging and disfiguring fungal diseases to attack turf. It occurs in over 90% of golf courses in the UK to some extent during the year. Good management techniques can go a long way towards minimising the effect of this disease but historically, the number of guaranteed full season control programmes have been limited. Now, with the launch of the microdochium patch programme, full control of the infection with a planned approach is assured for the first time. And according to Neil Pettican from the Bayer Turf Solutions Team, the programme has been specifically developed to guarantee control during the months of September to December. “The design of the programme helps greenkeepers by giving them a planned approach to disease management and aims to promote optimum health so that it’s better able to deal with the threat of disease. “The greenkeepers’ primary goal is getting the course ready for play and this has never been more important in an increasingly competitive environment - where customer expectations are high and turf quality and playability is key
to retaining members,” says Neil. Chemistry should be used to complement cultural and biological controls, as part of an integrated approach, Neil believes that the new microdochium control programme is a vital preventative measure. The preventative treatment package ensures rotation of three different chemical groups and this makes certain that resistance management is maximised. The package includes four different products that are applied in 28 day intervals: Interface® with StressgardTM Formulation Technology, Dedicate® Chipco® Green and Interface® again at the end. Neil says that the preventative approach will save money and time. “Reactive treatments can have huge ramifications, if, for instance there is a disease outbreak which is accompanied by a lot of rainfall, the application window can be narrow, inhibiting the ability to spray. And if scarring occurs from an outbreak - this can last well into the following season - if grass growth and recovery is poor, until grass starts growing again.” Included in the programme is complete advice and support from the Bayer Turf Solutions Team, who can offer guidance on applications and the employment of cultural and biological controls. Contact the Bayer Turf Solutions Team for more information or to discuss your individual requirements via turfsolutions@bayer.com or 00800 1214 9451.

Bursting into bloom Vitax nurture a blooming Britain Borders and baskets across Britain are bursting into bloom as towns across the country compete for top honours in regional and national competitions this summer. Helping them in their quest is Vitax, who supply Q4 and Vitafeed fertilisers to nurture bright, eyecatching displays in parks, gardens, streetside borders and hanging baskets. Vitax manufacture and supply a spread of quality products for landscape and sports contractors, designers and gardeners and professional growers. The range includes specially formulated fertilisers, water management products and specialist treatments. Its plant nutrition products span general and organic fertilisers, including the Q4 range, a firm favourite for more than three generations. Q4 for action Vitax Q4, (5.3-7.5-10 +3 MgO + TE, applied at 3.5 kg/m³) available as pellets in 20kg bags, is the UK’s premier extended release, general-purpose fertiliser. Originally developed as a base fertiliser in John Innes composts, and still approved for use in JI formulations, Q4 has proved an extremely versatile fertiliser for applying to a wide variety of crops. It provides all the nutrients and trace elements essential for vigorous growth, abundant flowering and ripening of fruit. An ideal top dressing for ornamentals, Q4 is suitable for applying to loam-based and soil-less composts.

Q4 Top for containers Slow release fertiliser Q4 Top, available in 25kg bags, is designed for top-dressing container-grown trees and shrubs. Mini granules aid application and good spread and will feed for up to three months, delivering all major and minor nutrients needed for steady, healthy growth without promoting excessive soft shooting. Its organic content promotes growth of beneficial organisms in growing media and improves root health.
Tailor Vitafeed formulations to water type This comprehensive range of water soluble fertilisers is ideal for the fertigation and liquid feeding of all crops - the formulation taking account of water types to ensure maximum uptake of nutrients by plants. All Aboard! “The sedum mats were laid about three months ago and I’m really pleased with the results” says Andy. “Installation wasn’t all that easy. Cutting and moulding the sedum mats to fit relatively small contours was quite fiddly, but that just added to the sense of achievement.” Chris Carr from Harrowden Turf, the growers of Enviromat added “It’s always good to hear how our customers have used our products. This project has completely captured my imagination. I absolutely love it.”
Enviromat sedum matting from Harrowden Turf Ltd has been used for an unusual but fascinating project in a private garden in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. Andy Barr, Head of Heritage Operations for the London Transport Museum and his sons under direction from his wife Judith have spent the last two years building a model railway layout in his back garden. It’s been carefully designed to enhance, rather than define the garden. “This is not about turning the whole garden into a huge model railway, it’s about adding interest to the garden without disrupting the way it’s used.” Said Andy. “We still have a lawn, flower beds, shrubs, washing line etc. The focus has been on creating a garden which just happens to have a railway in it, rather than creating a great big model railway with a few plants dotted around.” The railway makes use of the whole garden without intruding upon it. Careful planning means that trains can take nine different routes around the garden. There’s even a level crossing to allow safe passage for the lawn mower and Andy’s wheelbarrow. Andy and his family chose Enviromat for landscaping the project because the plants are the size and texture that fits both with the garden and with the scale of the railway. The fleshy leaves of the sedum plants resemble the small shrubs that cling to the side of the mountains yet they in no way look out of place in the garden. It’s the perfect solution.

Invisibility issues Around 81% of landscapers in the UK miss out on business due to poor online presence Research conducted by Yell highlights invisibility issues online for small businesses Yell, one of the biggest providers of digital marketing in the UK, has discovered the majority of landscapers it researched have wrong or inconsistent information online including basic details such as a phone number or email. Feedback shows 89% of customers say they will try another company if the details listed online for a particular business are incorrect suggesting many small businesses, including landscapers are missing out on a lot of potential custom. Yell conducted research into how the 12,761 landscapers in its UK database appear online, also asking customers nationwide about their online habits and expectations. The results paint a gloomy picture pointing to some basic errors in small businesses’ approach to reaching potential online customers. Key facts: • 51% of customers said when they were looking for a new service, the most important source of information was a website • Having inconsistent or non-existent information online means small businesses are missing out on potential custom with 54% of people relying on positive online reviews when deciding on a new local business or service
• There are 314 landscaper businesses with “ground” in their name – of these, there are seven landscaping businesses called “Ground Force” • There are 2476 landscaper businesses with the word “garden” in their name • There are 90 landscaper businesses that have “season” in their name. “If a company’s information online is wrong, it’s arguably worse than not being online at all,” said Mark Clisby, Yell’s Marketing Director. “Not only is the company effectively invisible to customers, it can also seem careless or even untrustworthy. This often happens because companies don’t always know all the listings sites where they appear, or when they move they forget to update their information. It’s easily done, but can be incredibly damaging for business.” “A lot of small businesses tell me they get all their business from word of mouth and don’t need to be online. However, they’re ignoring the fact that word of mouth has moved online, with more than half of all customers choosing a local business based on online reviews. That’s a lot of work to be missing out on.” To support small businesses, Yell has launched Connect, a service recognising the importance of connections, word of mouth recommendations and referrals. It helps business owners make their details visible online and get in front of the people looking for local products and services.

Blue and white ICL has announced that its range of market leading rotary spreaders have undergone a colour transformation from green and orange to blue and white to represent the new corporate colours. The AccuPro 2000 and SR-2000 spreaders for groundsmen, greenkeepers and landscapers are renowned for accurately delivering seeds, fertilisers and top dressing. Up until now, these popular spreaders have graced the likes of fairways, sports fields and landscapes in their signature green and orange colour. However, in line with new company branding both the AccuPro 2000 and SR-2000’s hopper will now be manufactured in ICL’s shade of blue. While the spreaders will be sporting new colours, the specifications will remain exactly the same, continuing to offer turf managers the very best in application efficiency. Both models have been designed and built with quality, durability and cost effectiveness in mind. Each spreader is manufactured to the highest industry standards, using high spec materials throughout the manufacturing and construction process, ensuring each meets ICL’s stringent quality control standards.

Gardening for wheelchair users
Pristine condition
Gardens have undoubted therapeutic benefits for all, especially for people with reduced mobility. Gardening is a medium for social bonding and helps bring people out of isolation. Wheelchair raised gardening encourages a mixing of people of all abilities, as well as of all generations, and fights the segregation often faced by disabled people. TERRAform’s special planter allows people to sit and work comfortably at table height. Independent gardening is ideal for people in wheelchairs, those who cannot stand for long, retirement homes, care homes, schools and institutions for disabled and older people. The ergonomic shape allows gardeners close contact with the soil. The dimensions have been calculated using arms’ width so that the gardener can reach the middle and the edges without having to move. The planters can also be joined together to create larger working areas. TERRAform is designed and made in France. www.terraform.fr
Cardiff’s Principality Stadium has installed a 3G synthetic surface to the surround of the pitch. Head groundsman Lee Evans told The Landscaper, “when the synthetic surface was installed we needed a machine to maintain it. I didn’t look at anything else – SISIS are well known in the industry and they manufacture reliable machines. I’ve used SISIS before for different things: when we needed a one-off piece of kit to solve a problem we were having, they even tailor-built a machine to meet our requirements,” said Lee. He decided that the SISIS Z Brush, also known as the SISIS Zig Zag Brush, would be the ideal piece of equipment. Available in 6ft or 8ft widths, these unique brushing units consist of four or five 2ft long brush sections, mounted on a main frame so that each brush is operating at an angle to the forward motion of the towing vehicle. This type of brushing has been found to improve the movement of top dressing material down to the base of the grass sward, with very few passes. Alternatively, and in Lee’s case, the Z Brush also is perfect for ‘working in’ the rubber crumb on synthetic surfaces. “We use the Z brush and it keeps the synthetic surface in pristine condition. We use it once a week and the best feature is that it moves the rubber crumb around and it stands the fibres back up excellently”. www.sisis.com

Community clear up kit Community groups in North Somerset that want to help clean up their neighbourhoods are set to benefit from access to special resources to get the job done. The community clear up kit has been introduced as a result of the partnership between national green services provider Glendale and North Somerset Council. The kit comes complete with tools including litter sticks, hoes, rakes, brooms and shovels, as well as bin bags and safety equipment such as gloves, hi-visibility clothing and risk assessments. A team from Glendale is also on hand to deliver the kit before use and collect it afterwards, as well as disposing of any waste. The council’s streets and parks partnership oversees approximately 10,000 hours of volunteering, with the new dedicated resource pack allowing further events to take place aside from the work done by Glendale’s team of experts. David Buckley, general manager at Glendale, told The Landscaper, “Our experience shows that communities really want to be involved in improving their neighbourhood but often feel there is little or no support available to do so.

“By building community partnerships our North Somerset team is hoping to offer more involvement in the services we provide. Public and community groups have always been willing to help, and are now able to do so through the support of the clear up kit.” Cllr Peter Bryant, the council’s executive member responsible for parks and open spaces, said: “The community clear up kit is another way residents in North Somerset can get involved in improving their neighbourhood. “It is hoped that the clear up kit will equip community groups to take pride in their neighbourhoods, build community spirit, improve public open spaces and make North Somerset a better place to live and work.”
Sustainable fencing system Provender Nurseries, the Kent based wholesale plants and horticultural supplier serving London and the SouthEast, has become the latest specialist trade partner for Mobilane, and has started stocking the Mobilane Green Screen sustainable fencing system and MobiRoof green roof system. From its 17 acre site in Swanley, Provender Nurseries supplies to the horticultural trade, landscaping and amenity sectors, including garden designers, landscape architects, landscape contractors, golf courses, schools, local authorities, professional gardeners and allotment societies. Speaking about the systems, Richard McKenna, Managing Director of Provender Nurseries said “We think these are great products that our landscaping customers are going to need. We offer a huge range of products, and we want to continue extending our offering with new, exciting products like these. “While most of our customers are domestic landscapers, a lot of their projects at the moment are commercial, and both Green Screens and MobiRoof have obvious applications here. However, they also have good domestic applications. Green Screens are very good for security, have a good long life, and are easy to plant. The system ticks a lot of boxes, while MobiRoof is very sleek and people will like the look this product can deliver.” MobiRoof is a clip together sedum cassettes system that can be easily laid onto the surface of a roof. The cassettes are suitable for roofs of garden houses, garages and carports. The cassettes are cultivated with 4 – 6 different kinds of sedum and are easy to install by simply clipping together. Architectural adjustments are not necessary.

Roxil Silicone Wood Protector from Safeguard Europe is a liquid water-based silicone emulsion used to waterproof and protect wood from the undesirable effects of moisture which can promote organic growth and result in rot, decay and staining. Recommended for use on softwood, including water susceptible species such as pine, Roxil Silicone Wood Protector waterproofs the surface and can be applied by brush or spray. The benefits of applying Roxil Silicone Wood Protector to timber, such as fences or garden furniture, include reduced organic growth such as algae; reduced water uptake – improving longevity and lessening the possibility of fungal growth – and improved dimensional stability. These benefits are enjoyed for approximately 10 years on softwoods. Simple and straightforward to apply, ensure wood is clean and dry before application and Shake the Roxil well before use. It can be applied by brush or spray, and two coats will deliver optimum coverage. The second coat should be applied while the first is still wet, typically within 30 minutes. www.safeguardeurope.com

Researching online Cub Cadet, has announced its latest initiative- a free-todownload app available to android as well as Apple devices. The app contains all details and specifications across the entire 2016 Cub Cadet range and is easily divided by product type for quick and simple navigation. Originally launched for Apple devices in March, the app has proven to be so popular, that this Android version makes it even more accessible, to even more users. The Apple app has already had well over 500 downloads, with around a 50/50 split between phones and tablets, and this figure only continues to rise. It has been deliberately designed as a speedy tool for dealers when face to face with customers, but also provides customers another means of researching online before visiting their local Cub Cadet dealer. The app has a catalogue style approach and from the home page users simply select the product type that they are interested in across the full Cub Cadet line up, encompassing Lawnmowers, Mini-Riders, Lawn Tractors, Zero-Turn Riders, Robotics, UTV and Chore Performers. Each product has a vast amount of19/1/16 detail to choose 1_Spald-Landscaper-Hlf-0216.ps 14:58 from Page 1 with quick reference guides highlighting each product’s

key features and benefits, along with advice on which product to choose based upon mowing area. Dealers and consumers alike can easily see detailed product specifications including; cutting information, discharge system, engine details, drive systems, dimensions and price. For further information and videos, it is possible to link through to the Cub Cadet website. Nick Hills, general manager of Cub Cadet UK, told The Landscaper “Cub Cadet’s heritage spans 55 years. Whilst we have a strong and prestigious background, we are always evolving and looking to new technologies to support our dealers and customers. The success of our app is yet another example of that. Supporting our dealers is key to our success so we want to do all we can to help them, which is why we have rolled out the Powershop showroom displays and developed this app.”

Two new ride-on mowers Toro has launched two new Z Master Professional ride on models. The Z Master 8000 Direct Collect Mower features a hopper, allowing you to collect grass clippings as you mow. It is ideal for maintaining more restricted spaces, combining an out-front deck and rear discharge design with easy to use drive controls for greater manoeuvrability in tighter areas. The rear discharge deck allows trimming on both sides and keeps flower beds and walkways clipping free for a pristine finish. A high quality cut is assured through deep deck design and high blade tip speed. Powered by a Kohler Command Pro 640cc engine, and featuring a hydrodrive system for effortless control, the Z Master 8000 is fast and effective - travelling at ground speeds of up to 7mph. The 28-litre fuel tank allows for a longer mow time, whilst the high-capacity collector fills evenly back to front for maximum efficiency. An optional recycling kit is also available, which switches from 100% collecting, to 50% recycling and 50% collecting, so the hopper can be emptied less frequently. Downtime is minimised through incorporation of features including a heavy duty sealed gearbox and a simple, reliable belt drive system. Peace of mind is assured with Toro’s 2 Year/1,200-hour commercial warranty. The Toro Z Master 6000 offers industry-leading performance with a focus on operator comfort. Available in five models, including the NEW 74909TE model with MyRide the 6000 series offers cutting widths ranging from 122cm to 152cm and powerful 726852 cc engines, for fast effective turf maintenance. All Toro 6000 Series Z Master mowers feature deluxe seats with 3D isolator mounts to absorb bumps and vibrations, but the all new MyRIDE suspension system on the 74909TE takes comfort to a new level with a fully suspended platform to minimise the effects of tough terrain, greatly reducing operator fatigue so that you can mow for longer. Easily adjustable rear shock assemblies means operators can quickly choose their ride setting to account for different rider weights or ride preferences – perfect for contracting companies with multiple operators and for acreage owners who just want to mow in maximum comfort. www.toro.com

Power to school’s rugby pitches Joining a Toro ProCore 648 at Town Close House Preparatory School in Norwich is the heavy-duty Toro LT3340 triple. Replacing an older Toro CT2140, head groundsman Chris King says he opted for the LT3340 because he wanted more power to tackle the School’s three rugby pitches and cricket outfield. “The CT2140 has served us well but when it came to upgrading we decided to go for more horsepower,” says Chris. “With 35hp and wider cutting units the LT3340 will allow us to be more productive. Of course we had got used to the CT and finding our way around the machine, but the LT is easy to use, too.” Sport plays a major part of school life at Town Close, whose pupils are aged between three and 13, and with three sites to tend it was important the machine was easy to use and transport for Chris and his grounds team of three. “Rugby and cricket are very important to the school and we maintain these areas to the highest standard possible,” Chris reveals. “Toro gives us the quality cut and finish we’re looking for as well as being very easy to adjust. The height we cut at for the rugby pitches is different to other areas so it was important for us to have a machine whose cutting units can easily be changed while out on the field. We’ve certainly got that in the LT3340.” The LT3340 is one of Toro’s hardest working grounds mowers. Built to the highest specification to give the durability, strength and performance required to ensure productive, efficient mowing and a first-class finish, the LT3340 is perfect for a variety of applications. Plus it’s roadworthy with a transport speed of over 15mph and, says Chris, “a click lock to ensure the cutting units stay firmly in place while in transit”. Chris finishes by saying: “We knew we wanted to stick with Toro as we’ve never been let down by them and this is as expected another good purchase.” turfcaresales.ie@lely.com.

Wide range Makita’s recent launches include new cordless and mains powered lawn mowers, and cordless and petrol powered line trimmers. The twin 18v (36v) cordless mower now has a 43cm cutting width whilst the 240v mains powered mower with 33cm cutting width cuts closer to walls than previous models. The latest 18v line trimmer has the motor in the cutting head and the new 24.5cc model is powered by the environmentally friendly MM4 4-stroke engine. The new Makita DLM431 36v push type lawn mower is powered by two 18v Lithium-Ion batteries and will run the rotary twin tooth blade up to 3,600rpm. The battery “fuel gauge” showing the state of charge is conveniently placed at the handle bar controls. The Soft Start system controls the initial power supply giving a smooth run up of the powerful 36v DC motor even if the power control is fully depressed. An electronic current limiter protects the motor from overload in operation. The wide 43cm cutting width is complimented by 13 cutting height settings selected by a single adjustment lever. The mower body is a rigid housing for rugged reliability and the ball bearing axles give free running wheel action. This mower is recommended for lawns up to 950m², has low levels of noise and vibration and a 50 litre grass box with grass level indicator. The new Makita ELM3311X 240v push-type electric mower has a 1,100watt induction motor that will run the rotary blade up to 2,900rpm and a 33cm cutting width with three
height positions of 20mm, 40mm and 55mm. The lightweight 27 litre grass box has a useful grass level indicator. Overall this mower weighs just 13kg thanks to the moulded polypropylene deck housing design which also allows the wheels to be fitted in line with the body so they don’t protrude, enabling you to mow up close to borders, walls and kerbing. This model has quick folding handles, carry grip for easy transport and is recommended for lawns of up to 400m². Powered by the high performance Makita MM4 4-stroke petrol engine the new EM2511LH linetrimmer has a 42cm cutting diameter and weighs just 5.3kg. Running on straight unleaded petrol the 24.5cc engine develops 1.0 hp and the pressure fed oil lubrication system enables this trimmer to be used at any angle. The MM4 engine has reduced exhaust emissions, low fuel consumption and low noise. It is fitted with the reliable diaphragm type carburettor, auto decompressor and fuel primer pump for easy starting. The loop handle gives full control at any angle of use and the protector covers both metal blade and nylon cutting head. www.makitauk.com

weed control
Fined up to £5,000 or prison Searching the web for advice on the best way to tackle Japanese knotweed you are likely to find confusing and contradictory advice, a study says. Researchers found the accuracy of information varied significantly, and could result in the further spread of the non-native invasive plant. Japanese knotweed is one of the most damaging invasive species, estimated to cost £166 million each year. The findings have been published in the Journal of Applied Ecology. The researchers stressed that tackling the invasive species needed to be considered on a case-by-case basis. They said some some occurrences would require professional assistance, but many small-scale cases in domestic gardens would not. They warned that advice that concentrated or overemphasised the risks (such as fines and enforcement notices) could lead to “unnecessary anxiety and expenditure.”

Guidance on the UK government web-page dealing with the issue of preventing the spread of invasive species begins by outlining an individual’s obligations, which includes preventing non-native invasive plants from “spreading into the wild and causing a nuisance.”.It then highlights the potential consequences of failing to do so: “You could be fined up to £5,000 or be sent to prison for two years if you allow contaminated soil or plant material from any waste you transfer to be spread into the wild.” Although Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) arrived in the UK in an unsolicited package of plant species in 1850, it was soon being cultivated and sold by an increasing number of plant nurseries. Plant historians say the sharing of cuttings and the dumping of unwanted specimens were the primary cause of the spread of the plant through the country. This was compounded by the quick-growing species’ ability to thrive on disturbed soil, allowing it to rapidly spread along watercourses and roadsides. It is now estimated that the annual cost of the plant, which can grow one metre in a month, to the UK economy is £166 million.

Foliar contact herbicide
Glyphosate
ICL continues to develop its presence in the Landscape and Industrial market sector with the announcement that they have reached an agreement with Bayer Environmental to be their working partner and exclusive supplier of Finale 150. Finale 150 is a foliar contact herbicide manufactured by Bayer and contains 150g/L of glufosinate-ammonium. This powerful and popular herbicide, that gained hard surface approval in 2015, is designed to provide a high level of control over annual and perennial grasses and broad-leaved weeds and can be applied over a wide range of amenity and industrial situations. Finale 150 is approved for use on natural surfaces not intended to bear vegetation, permeable surfaces overlaying soils, hard surfaces, along fence lines and in managed amenity turf for line-marking preparation. With the onset of weed growth, Finale 150 provides a welcome addition to professional weed control companies looking for an alternative product that can be used for hard surface weed control. Extensive trials conducted last year revealed the product to be the most effective way to control Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense). Finale 150 was tested in two different settings – on a natural surface not intended to bear vegetation with a long established Horsetail issue and on a paved surface which was also heavily infested with Horsetail. The trials compared the efficacy of a 360g/L formulation of Glyphosate, a tank mix of a 360g/L of Glyphosate and Finale 150, Finale 150 as a single application, and Finale 150 with two applications 28 days apart. The results exceeded all expectations – Finale 150 was the only product to have an immediate impact, visible results were seen after just 48 hours versus up to 14 days for Glyphosate. Whilst control of the Horsetail was rapidly achieved with just one application, it was found that the best levels of control were achieved by making two applications of Finale 150, 28 days apart. The active ingredient glufosinate-ammonium, possesses a unique mode of action which is a vital tool in weed resistance management. As a foliar contact herbicide Finale 150 is absorbed by the plant through its leaves and other green parts providing rapid control. Finale can also be used for preparing sports turf for line marking. www.icl-sf.co.uk
‘With regard to the forthcoming vote by the Appeals Committee of the European Parliament that could see glyphosate banned from use as a pesticide, and having consulted with members who operate in the amenity horticulture sector and who would be directly affected by a ban, BALI wishes to clarify its position on this challenging issue. Whilst BALI would not want to see this highly effective chemical withdrawn from use by its members and other amenity horticulture professionals carrying out weed control, it would unequivocally support its immediate withdrawal if sufficient scientific evidence from acknowledged and respected expert bodies was produced that prove it to be carcinogenic and therefore harmful to human health. If sufficient evidence is not yet available, however, the European Parliament could consider a ban on the sale of glyphosate to the domestic customer, restricting its use to qualified industry professionals whilst research is undertaken. BALI members operating in the public sector are already working collaboratively with their clients to trial alternative methods of weed control. Hitherto, glyphosate has been an extremely effective and cost-efficient method, which has kept costs down for clients and particularly for local authorities struggling with stringent budget cuts. If, as a result of a ban, more labour-intensive methods of controlling weeds have to be employed, decisions on what level of control is acceptable will undoubtedly have to be made by clients and communicated effectively to users of affected parks and public spaces. BALI hopes that, should glyphosate be withdrawn, sufficient time is given to the industry to adjust. In the event that glyphosate is withdrawn later this month BALI will work closely with its members to signpost them towards potential alternatives’. www.bali.org.uk

Showing the way Apart from enhancing the outward appearance of properties, exterior lighting is an important safety feature. Martin Bennett reports. The last thing you want is a claim from a visitor for injury due to falling over on an unlit path or driveway. Amenity lighting can be attractive as well as functional and it need not be expensive to install or wasteful in electricity usage. Depending on the property type and style many different lights are available.

Some guidelines for choosing path or driveway lighting: 1 Make sure light is directed downwards to reduce light pollution. 2 Use lights with replaceable LED bulbs for ease of maintenance. 3 Install dusk to dawn photocells (some lights have them
Tip: If the lights are next to a white wall use cool white or daylight white LED bulbs if next to a stone or brick wall Warm white LED bulbs look better. Solar lights Most solar lights are decorative only and are not suitable for amenity lighting. However some more expensive types using lithium Ion batteries work well and cost nothing to install and run. The “Solamon range of solar bollard and Pedestal lights Lumena sell work well and will last many years Martin Bennett is the founder of Lumena Lights.

artificial grass
Artificial grass - growing quickly The market for artificial grass is growing quickly. Driven by a combination of better manufacturing techniques combined with an increasing awareness of the longer term environmental and economic benefits. It is worth mentioning two distinct types of users who also find it very valuable:A. Older people who cannot physically mow their lawns. B. Holiday home owners who are not always “on site” to look after their lawns. As our weather grows warmer there will be more pressure on restricting water usage. Hose pipe restrictions can really destroy a natural lawn, but artificial grass will not be affected. Like everything, you get what you pay for. The cheaper products look like the sort of bright-green baize used by greengrocers, which is OK on a pitch-and-putt golf course, but not what you want in a garden. The best fake grasses are hard to tell from real grass from a distance. The most expensive are the most realistic and could easily be mistaken for the real thing. Most artificial grasses come in rolls that are 2m or 4m wide. Cost wise, they work out to anything from £10 to £30 per sq m. A typical lawn may take a two-man team a day to prepare and lay.
Perfect solution
Artificial grass is the perfect solution for outdoor spaces at Primary and Secondary Schools, Nurseries and Play Areas. Synthetic turf provides the opportunity for children to learn and play in a safe, clean, stimulating environment which is hard-wearing and useable all year round. Many of the turfs Hi Tech Turf supply are suitable for play areas as they are all safe for children and non-toxic, however, they recommend their HT Play Grass, Evolution and Schools turfs as the most appropriate for these areas. The HT Play Grass has also been tested as part of a HT Safe Play System which incorporates the HT Safe Play Shock Pad to create critical fall heights under play equipment. The Play Grass is available in green, blue, yellow, rust, black and white.

HT Play Grass Green is priced at £13.50 per m2 and colours at £15.50 per m2 inclusive of VAT. In order to create more interactive spaces we are also able to incorporate shapes, colours, numbers, letters or specific designs into your project. These are manufactured according to your specific requirements and incorporated into your area’s design. Prices for these items would be on a per project basis. If it is a multi-sports pitch that you require then our HT Evolution and HT Schools turfs would be ideal due to there tight knit yarn. These turfs are also ideal when covering concrete or tarmac yards. MUGA’s have become popular for both Primary and Secondary Schools, Colleges and Universities. The nature of a MUGA enables a range of sports to be played on the surface, this allows for increased use of the area due to it’s diverse nature and the area is playable all year round. The MUGA surface can also incorporate general play areas that can be used for younger children and outdoor teaching. grass would be worn in places – and show damage in other places. Artificial grass is hardy enough to withstand the activities of children and animals alike, meaning that the family in Langton can now play till their heart’s content, without fear of lasting damage to their garden. One extra plus, which we are sure will be greatly appreciated, is the latex backing of Perfectly Green grass, which means that water will just soak through. The main advantage of this is that when the dogs and children go out to play in poorer weather the garden won’t be flooded, and they won’t end up tracking mud through the house. On this project, they used one of the newer types – Winchester. It is a very rich looking artificial grass which has great density, manufactured with an oval blade shape which helps the blades spring back. www.perfectlygreen.co.uk
Are you one of those nature lovers who enjoy tiptoeing through the grass without wearing socks or shoes? Well, now you can. Australian company, KUSA makes artificial grass flip flops to simulate the feeling of walking barefoot on top of green grass. www.kusashoes.com
Finishing touches Perfectly Green put the finishing touches to another garden project, this time in Langton Green in Kent. They were called to help out the private owners of a property in the area who sought to revitalise their garden after it had fallen into natural disrepair, due to years of dogs digging holes and kids playing. This kind of ordinary general wear and tear can really affect the aesthetic of a garden; a problem that can be perfectly solved by artificial grass. When the Perfectly Green team first arrived at the garden it was easy to work out the problem. With gardens as heavily used as this one, it is understandable that the

Punch above their weight the services of sub-contractors. “One of our sub-contractors had a GreenMech Arborist 150 which really impressed some of our guys who managed to use it when out on jobs. So, when we were in the market to update our chipper fleet, we decided to look at the GreenMech range and settled on two Arborist 130’s - which we’ve now had for just over a year.
Gloucestershire based Tree Maintenance have been an Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor since 1985 – one of only 100 in the country. Their core business revolves around tree surgery, for both domestic and commercial customers, for which they rely on GreenMech and their Arborist range of woodchippers to cope with a variety of tasks. Nick Organ is General Manager and has been with the company for over 30 years. He is supported by three other managers and seven staff on call - when required they use
A major consideration for going with the smaller, lighter option of the 130 was the 750kg towing restrictions in force these days that impacts on our younger drivers. Also, we’ve noticed a trend in recent years that people are keeping the wood for burners or alternative uses which means we’re not getting the quantity of wood to chip that we used to. Purchasing the Arborist 130’s over the 150 option also meant a considerable cost saving.” The Arborist 130 has a generous 970mm x 790mm in-feed hopper, which aids bushy brash reduction and coupled with a 150cm x 230cm letterbox-style throat, enables heavily forked branches to be fed in easily. “I’ve used both large and small machines in the past and would say that these Arborist 130’s really punch above their weight. We’ve taken the pair of them on large jobs with lots of material to throughput and there has been no bottleneck.“ concluded Nick.
A Promising Partnership A new partnership brings art and culture to England’s forests and woodlands as chief executive, Darren Henley signs a new Memorandum of Understanding. The four-year agreement between Arts Council England and the Forestry Commission will be signed at the Forest of Dean Sculpture Park in Gloucestershire. Based on a shared belief that art and culture have an inspirational and transformational effect. Arts interventions in the natural world create a fresh dialogue between artists, the environment and our communities. Woods and forests are an important part of England’s cultural history and it is important that they are a part of our contemporary arts. Based on learning from the previous partnership, a key focus of this agreement is to target places with little cultural infrastructure and with few people engaged in arts and culture, and to use insight from audience feedback to get
more people involved. They hope to open up more opportunities for students to get involved in the arts, improve cultural education for young people and promote graduate retention. This kind of collaboration is exciting and engaging, and could help people see the world in new ways.

APF 2016 - huge range of new exhibitors
Over 300 exhibitors have already booked sites in APF 2016 and the organisers have had to find more space for static stands as the original static display area has already sold out. Exhibition Secretary, Ian Millward told The Landscaper “The levels of bookings to date has been fantastic, well ahead of APF 2014. The static display area has never sold out so early before. We have had to create extra static space on the demonstration circuit to cope with the demand and demonstration sites are becoming very limited. “What is particularly encouraging is the number of new exhibitors who have never exhibited at the APF show before. There will be several makes of machines never before seen in the UK. The UK market for equipment for both the forestry and arboricultural sectors is seen as very important and the 14 | Truxta two colour / K.M.Y.K APF exhibition renowned for the place where visitors come to buy new equipment. We currently have exhibitors from over 12 different countries from as far afield as America and Japan. Look out for the new Ohashi chipper range. time. It is fair to say that every major chipper manufacturer will be represented and showing their machines in action. “Of course it is not all about chippers. Nearly every large harvester and forwarder manufacturer has booked, Ponsse, Logset, Komatsu and we welcome back John Deere after an 8 year absence. Smaller scale machinery is becoming increasingly important to manage small woodlands and companies such as Norcar and Farmi amongst many others will have new machines on show. The full list of current exhibitors can be seen on the visitor section of the website. For those that have commented that not much actual tree felling seems to take place any more for a forestry show there will be large scale harvesting taking place with over 300 tonnes of timber felled over the three days by a range of both large and small scale harvesters. “ “Plant health continues to be ever more important and the Forestry Commission will be promoting their ‘Keep It Clean’ campaign and holding a series of topical seminars to bring you up to date with current research and news on the latest pest and diseases. “For the first time we will have a Forest Worker Zone. Organised by The National Coppice Federation and specifically aimed at the forest worker, there will be a range of daily practical drop-in discussions and demonstrations on a variety of subjects from ergonomic and efficient felling techniques, managing back pain, the new forest apprenticeship scheme to payment through the head. The draft programme for this can be found on the events page of the website. “There are new features even when you want to relax and enjoy a well-earned pint or lunch. Both the main catering areas will have large covered seating areas in case the weather turns inclement and both of these areas will have free Wi-Fi available to enable you to catch up with work emails. The catering area near the woodland crafts area will have a range of artisan produced food including squirrel pie. The Husqvarna World 25m pole climbing and the A W Jenkinson and Tilhill Forestry European Chainsaw carving competitions are both taking place again with the standard set to be higher than ever before. Three centuries to catalogue Tree species in the Amazon rainforest are so many and varied that it would take three centuries to catalogue them, a major study has estimated. In research published in the journal Scientific Reports, more than 500,000 museum specimens dating back 300 years were audited. They say nearly 12,000 tree species have been discovered so far. Based on this figure, they predicted that about 4,000 rare types remained to be discovered and described. The scientists say the species list will assist those trying to preserve the world’s most bio-diverse rainforest. “The checklist gives scientists a better sense of what’s actually growing in the Amazon basin, and that helps conservation efforts,” said one of the study’s authors, Dr Hans ter Steege, from the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in the Dutch city of Leiden.

Tree surgeons of the future Först, supplier of robust woodchippers, is working in partnership with Merrist Wood College to help develop the tree surgeons of the future. Spread across 400 acres, Merrist Wood College has over 2,000 students studying a range of land-based courses including Arboriculture and Forestry, Sports Studies and Horticulture. After meeting at the 2015 Arb Association’s Arb Show, Först donated a TR6 woodchipper to the college for their Arboriculture and Forestry courses, which range from oneday sessions through to full time 9-week intensive courses and diplomas from levels 2 to 4. Utilised by short course and full time Arboriculture and Forestry students, the machine enables pupils to gain hands-on experience using high quality industry machines. Through using the machine, students can achieve their required Certificate of Competence, allowing them to begin their Arboriculture or Forestry employment earlier than usual and with the correct qualifications. Lecturers from the college visited the Forst headquarters in Andover to receive specialist training on all aspects of the Forst machines, allowing them to offer bespoke learning to their students. A student visit also followed shortly after. All Först machines are installed with waterproof and vibration proof unique AutoIntelligence feed control, to provide outstanding reliability and usability as well as an open top flywheel system to ensure chip is thrown, not blown, minimising blockages on wet material and helping to maintain increased velocity when chipping. www.forst-woodchippers.com

More trees less flood damage CONFOR has welcomed a new report which recognises the significance of tree planting in tackling future flood risks - but called for more ambitious and detailed proposals to drive this new planting forward. The Cumbria Flood Action Plan sets out short-term actions to better protect 4,300 homes in one of the regions worst affected by the devastating 2015-16 floods, as well as long-term actions to help communities

Aerial photographs an essential tool Aerial survey photomaps are helping a specialist UK arboriculture company improve the management of trees. Map accurate imagery covering the Isle of Wight is being used by ArbAdvice as an integral part of consultancy services for home buyers, mortgage and insurance reports; Tree Preservation Order applications, objections and appeals; and inspections and surveys for Tree Risk Management. The real world detail and accuracy of the images – downloaded directly from Bluesky’s online Mapshop – provides context for decision making, while the quality allows for communication of proposed works, risk statements and conservation plans. “The Bluesky aerial photographs are an essential tool, allowing us to identify and assess trees in their real world context,” commented Ben Riches, owner of ArbAdvice. “This reduces the need for multiple site visits, improves the quality of decision making and allows us to effectively communicate plans and proposals with property owners, the Council and third parties, such as insurance companies. “We also make use of other datasets available from the Mapshop, including Ordnance Survey mapping,” continued Riches. “The combination of data, ease of acquisition and speed of delivery makes Bluesky our first choice.” ArbAdvice are qualified arboriculturists with over fifteen years’ experience working as tree surgeons on the
Isle of Wight. Specialists in both consulting and practical arboriculture, ArbAdvice offers a range of services including tree surveys, plans and reports for planning and development applications, tree root damage and subsidence assessment, and management plans for long term tree retention. Pond of the Month With the Chelsea Flower Show a recent memory, we re-visit the M&G garden designed by Jo Thompson. Jo asked Martin Kelly of Fairwater Ltd to install the liner and working alongside Scott of S.H. Landscape they achieved some fantastic results. Pond plan templates created from CAD data were produced and used by both the ground workers constructing the hard landscaping, and Gordon Low fabricators. This allowed the liner to be manufactured and delivered to site whilst the actual pond was still being constructed,

ensuring the project could be completed in time. The whole job, from start to finish took eight hours and 135m2 of material. Once the liner was in place the build could continue, in this case a deck/jetty and pavilion stand on top of the liner above the water line. The decking/jetty is supported by submerged Oak posts standing in the pond on top of the liner. Tel 01480 405433 www.gordonlowproducts.co.uk

Deep penetration We tend to take trees for granted, in our parks, estates and gardens, as a natural part of the landscape. All too often they are subjected to stress as a result of a number of factors such as nutrient shortages in the soil, surface compaction due to foot traffic and waterlogging where water drains off hard surface pathways. Armed with a number of solutions, Terrain Aeration have been treating trees in all types of situation for over twenty-five years, from back gardens to large estates right through to Royal Parks. The Terrain Aeration Terralift machines comprise a probe which reaches one metre depth, deeper than the roots of trees (other than the major tap roots which grow straight down). Breaking up the soil around the roots, and beyond, means that excess water will drain away from the roots to help stop anaerobic conditions and rotting of the root system. The probe is then used to inject dried seaweed which helps keep the fissures open and backfilling the probe holes with aggregate provides a semi permanent aeration/ ventilation shaft. Terrain Aeration aerate around the roots using two-metre spacings - on most occasions one-metre Project1_Layout 1 28/06/2016 13:44 Page 1 inside and one-metre outside the canopy drip line, as this

is where the growing roots lie. Decompacting around the roots and injecting air into the soil increases the percentage of uptake of oxygen into the root system. In one particular situation it was found there was a magnesium deficiency coupled with low overall soil fertility around trees in a park. This was determined using new technology to measure light transmission through the leaves on the trees to gain a reading of chlorophyll levels. The likely cause of the problem was that leaf litter is always removed and had been for a century, taking with it the natural nutrients from decaying leaves. There was also severe compaction of the surface around the tree. A tree feed mix containing slow release general nutrients and magnesium was injected, using the Terralift’s ability to inject granular material via its seaweed carrier, forcing it upwards into the root zone of the trees. This also avoids losing the nutrients to the grass which would occur with surface treatment. Two Terralift machines were used to carry out the process. There are some products in the market place which advertise to be of help for trees with Phytophthora. There is a product which is applied around the tree roots via a watering can. If the tree roots have been aerated by the Terralift machine, the product has a far better chance of reaching affected roots due to the soil being decompacted. There are machines that will go shallower, but this does not have such an effective treatment as you would still need to get excess water away from laying stagnant around the roots. Terrain Aeration also recommend that root samples from good and affected trees, as well as tip samples be sent for full analysis from the Forestry Commission or any other Arboricultural advisor. The samples should be labelled as well as being placed in separate plastic bags. Photos of the location of the trees would also help, just in case there is a huge wall on three sides of the tree or something which could affect its well being. It’s best to give a complete “story” surrounding the tree. For more details on deep penetration aeration treatment for trees, sports pitches, golf courses and gardens talk to Terrain Aeration. www.terrainaeration.co.uk

Drive up stone standards Natural Paving Products (UK) Ltd has developed a new and improved series of stone standards that have been endorsed by independent stone expert David Richardson. Offering a detailed and David Richardson completely transparent view of the quality and properties of its stone, Natural Paving Products’ new stone standards are a valuable resource to customers and specifiers wanting to make informed choices about stone purchases. Providing key information at a glance through a simple visual grading system, the stone standard has been applied to all of the company’s sandstone flagstones and block paving in its 2016 brochure. The standards are based on CE testing results and show performance across three key areas: water absorption, flexural strength and frost resistance. Water absorption is a crucial consideration as stones with higher absorption rates are more susceptible to mould, moss, pesticides and salt. The flexural strength of a stone is also important as it gives an indication of the stones overall durability. Measured in megapascals (MPa), the higher the number, the less chance it has of failing or delaminating once in-situ. Finally, frost resistance should be measured and is particularly important for the UK market. Most natural stone is very resistant to frost but it can sometimes weaken the stone. Its resistance to frost is therefore measured by a percentage reduction in flexural strength after a cycle of freezing and thawing – the lower the number, the better. The new grading system has been developed in collaboration with David Richardson, (pictured ) a Fellow of the Geological Society, past President of The Stone Federation and Stone Consultant at Facades and Materials Design Consultants (FMDC). David told The Laandscaper , “It is important for the end user to select the right material for their project, so buying from a supplier that provides compliant and tested products is very important. Consumers should also be wary that some suppliers fabricate test data to give the appearance that they comply with the Statutory Regulations. Also, buying from a source with good ethical and sustainable credentials helps minimise abuse and other unacceptable practices within
the wider supply chain. Natural Paving Products’ new stone standards are a fantastic example of supplier transparency and show a real responsibility and care for their customers.” Malcolm Gough, Group Sales and Marketing Director, added: “All of our products are fully CE marked and highly durable but, with the addition of the new stone standards, our hope is that we can offer even greater peace of mind and information to equip our customers to make the best choice. We are very proud that David has applauded our efforts and has approved our standards, his endorsement as an independent expert means a lot.” www.naturalpaving.co.uk
City Garden ‘New Horizons’ City Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show won a Siler Gilt Award with product donated by Stonemarket. The garden, which was designed by Guildford-based Beautiful Borders Garden Design and installed by landscaper Mark Nelson, was created for a ‘young’ retired couple who are downsizing their living space. The beautiful garden included an Art Nouveau-inspired pergola of blue cranes and stained glass windows to add year-round colour, which paid homage to the client’s native home of South Africa. The emphasis was on providing summer colour with minimal maintenance, and encouraging drought-resistant plants which would thrive in our increasingly warm climate. Stonemarket donated Avant-garde Imperial natural stone for the project, which was a bespoke order from India, and was used as circle features, steps, a bench and copings on the walls. Avant-garde paving is cut from a high quality, ethically sourced Quartzitic sandstone, which adds a contemporary feel to any garden. www.stonemarket.co.uk

Pothole problem? Worth looking into MP & KM Golding offer a new concept in road and track maintenance. Gone is the need to repair old, worn and potholed tracks by importing new and highly expensive stone. They operate two different types of crusher which are capable of crushing all types of stone, from tarmac to concrete blocks, they crush and lift the existing track hence recycling the old material to provide the new surface. The surface is then levelled and compacted with the use of unique vibrating plates, forming a hard-wearing level surface. With the addition of cement it is possible to considerably increase the longevity of the road surface. Road stabilisation, using cement, is a tried and tested method and a cost effective alternative to concrete or tarmac. Mark Golding said “We are having extremely positive feedback and there is obviously a need for this type of unique, low cost service.” These methods can be applied to a wide variety of applications, for example cow tracks to forest roads to light aircraft runways. Double Winners at The National Plant Show The Hawkesmill Nurseries team announced that the new Geum ‘Scarlet Tempest’ has won gold at the National Plants Show in the New Plants ‘Herbaceous Perennials’ section. Hawkesmill were also the winners of the ‘Planting The Seed Visitor Vote’ for the best retail display. The Warwickshire based family business, who offer retailers a wide selection of plants such as perennials, alpines, grasses and wildflowers, have chosen to offer this amazing plant this year to compliment their extensive herbaceous collections. An easy to grow, stunning plant, ‘Scarlet Tempest’ produces beautifully ornamental large, bright red, semidouble blooms. A continuous flowering time from April to September will ensure gardens will be full of vibrant colour from spring right through to autumn.
Richard Evans, Sales Director told The Landscaper, “ We are over the moon to have been presented with a gold for this amazing Geum and also really pleased at the response from visitors that came on to our stand at the National Plant Show. ‘Scarlet Tempest’ features masses of scarlet flowers that bloom all summer long, contrasting beautifully with attractive green foliage. It is perfect for growing in pots, mixed perennial borders and also in landscaping projects.” Hawkesmill Nurseries is a family run business with over 40 years growing experience - providing quality seasonal plants to Retail Nurseries, Garden Centres and also more recently to Landscapers and Garden Designers too. They are based in the heart of the country having their own satellite nurseries all within a 25 mile radius of the main production and dispatch site. Tel 01676 532334 www.hawkesmillnurseries.co.uk
First show garden A GARDEN designer from Gwent constructed his first show garden at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park and has had a helping hand from one of the UK’s leading nurseries. Dave Hodson from Usk created a garden for the show and Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford has been on hand with planting advice and plant supply. Dave said: “This is my first show garden and Wyevale Nurseries has been a great help as I wanted to make sure I got the planting exactly right. My garden is entitled ‘A Little Escape’. The philosophy is simple, ‘Go for It!’ be big, be bold, let your imagination soar. A garden must be practical but if it’s not beautiful, sexy and exciting it’s a missed opportunity. “My design shows how even a small garden with no attractive borrowed landscape can fire the imagination. It features strong triangular shapes that draw the eye down to the eclectic planting based on the jungle paintings of Henri Rousseau. “Although Rousseau never left France, he created dark, alluring tableaux of invented plants and wildlife, and imaginings of what lurks deep in the forest. The lush green palette of plants incorporates different leaf shapes, sizes and textures and feature combinations that are not usually associated, such as Euphorbia, Fatsia, Hakonechloa and Catalpa. “The garden will also feature specially commissioned

work from contemporary British ceramicist Jo Lee.” Oliver Phipps, Garden Design and Domestic Landscape Sales Executive at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We’re delighted we could help Dave with his debut garden at Tatton Park. We were on hand with our expert knowledge and it was great to show Dave around our nurseries so he could see first-hand the quality of the large range of plants we offer. “In the end we supplied Dave with Agapanthus ‘Lilac Lullaby’, Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’, Hakonechlioa macra ‘Aureola’, Hosta ‘Royal Standard’ and Kniphofia uvaria ‘Flamenco’. We wish him the best of luck in the judging.” www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk

Plant-of-the-Month Announced as one of July’s Plants-of-the-Month at Wyevale Garden Centres (WGC) is Earley Ornamentals’ three-season, award-winning SunPatiens Compact Electric Orange. Independently endorsed having been awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), SunPatiens were also voted as a favourite in the RHS People’s Choice Award by visitors to the RHS Wisley Plant Trials garden (2014). Easy to grow and easy to care for, SunPatiens are a hybrid with New Guinea Impatiens making them disease resistant and weather tolerant too. These robust garden performers excel in full sun or shade, providing versatile landscaping options. Perfect for intense displays or injecting pops of colour in to challenging or low-maintenance spaces, SunPatiens add shape, scale and on-trend vibrancy to planting schemes. Emma Burris, Junior Buyer (Bedding) at Wyevale Garden Centres is responsible for selecting the WGC Plant of the
Month and said: “SunPatiens are an excellent addition to our garden plant range – they are versatile and perform well. We are delighted to be working with Earley Ornamentals, as the UK’s primary distributor of SunPatiens”.

Bespoke native seed John Chambers Wildflower Seed has donated 2.5kg of bespoke native wildflower seed to the Hagge Woods Trust for their woodland wonderland at Three Hagges WoodMeadow. Located in York, North Yorkshire, Three Hagges WoodMeadow has been planted with the help of the local volunteers and is open for the benefit of the community. It holds enormous potential for educational and recreational events and is already being enjoyed by families, adults, schoolchildren and companies alike. John Chambers Wildflower Seed specialises in British native wildflower seed, sourcing seed from growers that are long established and stringent in their collection processes. John Chambers Wildflower Seed prides itself on creating British native seed mixes that can be incorporated into rural and urban projects across the UK. The company has one of the most comprehensive ranges of wildflower seed in the industry with species and mixes ranging from the unusual Vipers Bugloss seed to their very own wetland mix designed to flourish in areas close to lakes, ponds and streams. They have the in-house capabilities to design a wildflower seed mix to the specification of each project, taking into consideration the soil type, environment, budget and even colour. They are renowned for their stockholding capabilities, short response times and flexibility which enables their team to react quickly and tailor the wildflower seed to your specific requirements. The Hagge Woods Trust believe that the successful creation of woodland demands far more than just mass planting of trees. In planting new Hagge Woods, they intend to raise the bar for both beauty and biodiversity and restore joy and wonder to our woodland ecosystems. Set in ten hectares the woodland has been pioneered by Rosalind Forbes Adam, Chair of the Hagge Woods Trust, and Lin Hawthorne, Project Manager and Designer. It all started in 2012 with the conversion of a 25 acre barley field site into a wood-meadow, modelled on one of the most diverse of ecosystems in the northern temperate world. Since then the site has been sown with two (wet and dry) lowland mixes of grasses, 10,000 native trees and 28 species of shrubs have been planted into the meadow. The John Chambers wildflowers meadow has been sown with a higher proportion of wild flowers and a greater variety of fine grasses than is usual. This aims to gain a longer flowering season, slower and lower growth, and thus less maintenance. New plants are raised in the onsite nursery which is sponsored by another Yorkshire based business,

Bettys of Harrogate. Stuart Ball, John Chambers Wildflower Seed said, “What has been achieved at Three Hagges Wood-Meadow in such a short timescale is incredible. I have seen the wildflowers and they are stunning. The native mallows and yarrow, betony and wild basil, trefoils and field scabious, yellow rattle and campion in bloom are a sight to behold. To attract a diversity of wildlife and give such pleasure to the community is a remarkable achievement. John Chambers Wildflower seed is proud and delighted in equal measures to be involved with this project.” Lin Hawthorne, Project manager and designer is quite rightly proud of what has been achieved so far. “From a biodiversity blank canvas, within three years, we now have over 200 species of meadow flowers and grasses, each of which is a host to pollinating and other insects. We have achieved a remarkable count of pollinators – over 400 species have been recorded. If we can achieve this within three years just imagine how much more in ten, twenty or thirty? We have the tools to reverse the losses of diversity in our lifetimes.” www.johnchamberswildflowers.co.uk
