The environment matters The EU referendum took place after overnight thunderstorms and heavy downpours of rain. It disrupted voting and caused severe travel delays. In Romford, East London, about 60 homes on either side of Lodge Lane on Penn Gardens and Frinton Road were flooded to a depth of about a metre after the river Rom burst its banks. Many of London’s roads were affected by flooding, including the North Circular, which was closed at Waltham Forest. Roads in Battersea, in South-West London, Barking in East London and Lewisham were under several inches of water. Paving, tarmac and concrete increase the amount of rainwater that runs off by as much as 50 per cent, leading to flooding. It’s estimated that London has lost the equivalent to 5,200 football pitches by householders paving over their front gardens. Almost a quarter of all front gardens in NE England have been

completely paved over. Heavily paved areas do not support wildlife and prevent water from seeping into the soil naturally to reach the water table. This run-off goes into overloaded drains and is a major contribution to flash flooding. In addition, the heat absorbed by paving during the day is released at night, leading to poor air quality. There are a few things we can do in the short term. For pathways, choose from a range of natural or recycled materials, such as chipped wood or bark, glass chips, crushed brick, shells, recycled aggregates. If possible re-use concrete slabs, stone, bricks, cobbles and aggregates. If using paving slabs or blocks, ask for ones that use recycled materials. Set paving in sand, rather than mortar, so that rainwater can percolate through the gaps. Use permeable paving blocks and permeable grass grids for hard standing, which lessen the environmental impact of

paving over front gardens. The European Landscape conference (2-5 September 2016, Royal Agricultural University Cirencester} will be a platform to debate the role of nature, the landscape and the urban world we inhabit. The agenda for the conference is about lobbying and the need for legislating for nature and the landscape to have a greater priority in this urban world. Two important trade shows next month; Landscape in Battersea London and the APF show in Warwickshire. The Landscaper will be at both of these events reporting all that’s new in our industry. You are about to read the biggest issue of The Landscaper in it’s 20 year history. Enjoy – have a good month

BREXIT AND AUSTERITY THREATENS NATURE The European Landscape Conference event is just a few weeks away – it has attracted global interest from California to the Mediterranean. The not for profit event will debate the role of nature, landscape and the urban world we inhabit – The Agenda for the Conference is about legislating for Nature and the Landscape to have a greater priority in this Urban world, recognising the threat to mankind’s traditional relationship with the natural world. All of our speakers have grasped the importance of the agenda to discuss and inform the landscape architects, garden designers, industry and public. Their enthusiastic support confirms why the Conference is needed. The Conference has a stellar cast of speakers, including Professor James Hitchmough, of Sheffield University, Noel Farrer, the past President of the Landscape Institute, and Dr Phil Askew, the Project Lead for the Olympic Park in London. The sponsors partners and exhibitors have seen the relevance of this event, led by the Society of Garden Designers, the London College of Garden Design the British Association of Landscape Industries, and The Landscaper magazine. The 2016 European Landscape Conference is being held over 3-4 September, combined with an Exhibition, and with Garden

State-of-the art boiler BSW Timber has become the first UK sawmiller to generate electricity from biomass fuel with the commissioning of a £2.5 million Combined Heat and Power (CHP) boiler at its Carlisle mill. The state-of-the art 3.2 MW CHP Boiler is now operational and forms the latest phase of BSW’s £11 million investment programme in biomass energy across its mills in the UK and Latvia. During the last five years, BSW has commissioned seven biomass boilers at sawmills across the UK and Latvia, resulting in total heat capacity of some 38 MW to generate heat for the kiln drying process. The Carlisle plant will provide heat for the kilns, treatment plant, and offices whilst also producing electricity to be used in the sawmill production process. The Carlisle CHP plant was delivered in partnership with biomass experts Dallol Energy. Welcoming the commissioning of the new Carlisle CHP plant, BSW Timber’s CEO Tony Hackney

Brexit, the Law and ClearWater What does Brexit mean for those in landscaping and turf maintenance as far as legal compliance is concerned and with particular regard to the EU Water Framework Directive? David Mears explains Prior to Brexit, the E U Water Framework Directive (WFD) and machinery wash-off was the hot topic for many. With extensive publicity abounding relating to compliance, there cannot have been many of you involved in cleaning machinery that were not aware of this European Directive. Since Brexit we’ve been asked about the legal situation and whether the WFD still applies. Nothing in the short term has or will change in the UK regarding prevention of groundwater pollution and legal compliance until we actually leave the EU. Most now realise that probably the only way to be futureproof and compliant is to install a washpad water recycling system. ClearWater system invented fourteen years ago is now leading the field in the UK and supplied throughout Europe. ClearWater is officially approved as a water saving technology and UK purchasers can write off 100 per cent of the cost of an installation against taxable profits in the year of purchase. ClearWater’s design has very few moving parts and with the system safely below ground, installations are attractive.

Garden makeovers A national children’s charity has been able to enhance the lives of a dozen seriously ill children and their families thanks to the support of the UK’s leading artificial grass manufacturer. WellChild Helping Hands works with teams of volunteers from local companies to complete garden makeovers for children or young people with a serious illness or a severe disability with exceptional health needs. Thanks to a donation of over 400m2 of artificial grass from TigerTurf, the charity has been able to complete 11

The outstanding selling point is that, unlike other recycling systems, it is easily self-installed, an option taken up by over sixty per cent of customers. (We supply detailed installation instructions). Self-install enables costs to be kept down. Naturally, we still offer our full “turnkey package” for those wanting just that. Of interest to those with minibuses, pick-ups and other similar vehicles requiring a car-wash finish and responding to market demand, we recently introduced ClearWater Commercial recycling system which includes a dedicated rinse package. Following extensive trials we are now actively marketing the system with installations underway. ClearWater Commercial is of particular interest to those who have no access to foul sewer and cannot wash vehicles with traditional discharge methods. separate garden projects in the last six months – immediately benefitting 12 children with conditions such as global developmental delay, epilepsy, visual impairment, or cerebral palsy. By using TigerTurf’s best-selling Finesse artificial grass to rejuvenate the gardens, WellChild has been able to allow children with sensory processing difficulties to enjoy the texture and uniform colour of their new garden in all conditions, while also giving parents providing 24 hour care a surface which is easy to clean, requires very little maintenance and is also wheelchair accessible. Paul Langford, managing director at TigerTurf, added: “WellChild’s garden makeovers make an incredible difference to the lives of so many, and we were only too happy to lend a hand.” www.wellchild.org.uk www.tigerturf.com (Well done Tiger Turf -ed)

Scholarship opportunity The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association has announced the launch of a new scholarship in conjunction with BIGGA Partner, ICL. The ICL Continue to Learn Scholarship will offer

five BIGGA members the opportunity to attend the Continue to Learn education programme that will be held at BTME 2017. Sami Strutt, BIGGA’s Head of Member Development, said: “As BIGGA Partners, ICL have long recognised the significant investment that greenkeepers make in developing themselves throughout their careers. Often this dedication is done at their own personal expense, and so I am delighted that ICL will help five BIGGA members with the support they need to make the most of the Continue to Learn education programme at BTME 2017.” The scholarship is worth approximately £500 per person and comprises three nights’ hotel accommodation and a 15-hour education bundle. Commenting on the sponsorship agreement, ICL’s Ed Carter, Turf and Landscape – Sales and Development Manager, said: “ICL are delighted to sponsor BIGGA’s Continue to Learn Scholarship as we are keen to promote education at all levels of turf management.” “We see the Scholarship scheme as an exciting opportunity to provide Continue to Learn education to people who under normal circumstances may not be able to attend BTME, and we feel that it is an extension to the support we have always provided to the industry as a whole.” Applicants for the scholarship must be BIGGA members and a panel, made up of representatives from BIGGA and ICL will review all applications and select the recipients of the five scholarships. Successful applicants will be advised in October 2016. www.bigga.org.uk

A safer working environment There used to be a time when we had no choice but to put up with the emissions our machinery created.

These times are now over with the introduction of the Aspen fuel range, an alkylate petrol which contains virtually no benzene, sulphur or solvents - all of which are plentiful in the normal fuel (which most of you use) designed for cars. Users of Aspen no longer experience headaches, sore throats and eyes or nausea and generally feel much better at work from not having to breathe in these harmful chemicals. Aspen isn’t only better for the user, because of the cleaner burning characteristics of the product it means that the engines remain cleaner and require less servicing. Ordinary petrol deteriorates if stored in containers or petrol tanks, which results in starting and operating problems. Aspen retains its quality meaning you can leave it in your machine for as long as you like without the risk of damaging your machines fuel system. Aspen is available in a ready mixed 2-stroke and a plain 4-stroke version and both are available in 1 litre and 5 litre containers and in 200 litre drums. Aspen 2 is a practical, ready -mixed alkylate petrol for chainsaws, hedge trimmers, strimmers and other land-based 2-stroke engines. It also improves machine performance and ensures a longer service life. The cleaner petrol means, in turn, a cleaner engine with fewer deposits. Aspen 4 is an alkylate petrol for lawnmowers, rotary cultivators, snow blowers, boats and other 4-stroke engines. It helps to keep valves and pistons cleaner, which gives

16

www.landscapermagazine.com

the engine a longer service life and greater operational reliability. Aspen not only benefits man and machine but is also adapted to give the least possible environmental impact. The formation of ground-level ozone (smog) is a major environmental and health problem, which is caused by the reactive hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides that are emitted by combustion engines. Not only is this harmful for humans and animals but it also causes damage to agricultural crops, costing billions of pounds each year. Research has shown that use of Aspen alkylate petrol substantially reduces the formation of ground level ozone. It has also shown that the exhausts from a small two stroke engine run on Aspen alkylate petrol will form 40% less ground level ozone than the same engine run on normal European unleaded 95 petrol. www.aspenfuel.co.uk

A team from Mitie Landscapes were joined by colleagues from across the company to cycle 300 miles from London to Paris last month. New irrigation system Two years ago Trentham Golf Club, near Stokeon-Trent, came on board as a Toro Total Solutions customer and is now enjoying the complete installation of a Lynx system with 170 Infinity series greens, approaches and surrounds sprinklers. Lynx is a control system renowned for precise irrigation whatever the unique and changing priorities of the course and it is this that particularly appealed to Ed Stant, course manager, who was instrumental in the club’s decision to ‘go red’. “The old irrigation was a Toro block system and, despite being 34 years old and in need of updating, we were also looking for a greater degree of accuracy and control,” he says. “Before, we had to water an entire green at once. Now with independent sprinklers featuring revolving heads and a back-to-back set up, irrigating and maintenance can be specific to the smallest areas and refined to be so much more resourceful.” The club, together with consultant Roger Davey of

Irritech, chose Infinity sprinklers for the greens, green banks and approaches, TR50 sprinklers for the tees and T7s on the practice range tee. And with this combination comes a level of choice the club hasn’t seen before; as well as allowing Ed and his greenkeeping team of seven, to implement plans, which previously would have been a lot to do. “Getting the most from the course is more achievable now,” says Ed. “When we put fertiliser around bunkers and walk on and off areas for example, we can now water it in automatically, rather than by hand or waiting for the perfect weather forecast. We can also now look to refine the grass species around the greens collars and walk areas that are spoilt by patches of coarse rye grass. This system will help us change these grasses more successfully than previously.” Ed opted for radio remote control, which he says is “brilliant”, but he almost didn’t. “We weren’t going to get the radio remote control if I’m honest, it was one of the areas where we thought we might try and cost save. But I am so glad we did, it is great for precise watering during the day.” Ed concludes by saying: “Overall, although we haven’t been using the system for very long, I can say we were right to hope for and expect a more economical and efficient way of working, the system will certainly show itself to save us time and effort and I

They needed sof t ware that would grow with them – something that af forded them f lexibilit y and power to develop. This solution would need to handle the specialised nature of the range of plants grown. Whilst not great in number of species, the number of plants within Cheviot ’s species batches is of ten in the thousands. This requires a high level of traceabilit y and control to comply with Forestr y Reproductive Material (FRM) legislation. Commercial landscape contractor takes tech to the field A leading Midlands commercial landscaping specialist is taking tech into the field as part of a pilot project which will help it deliver an enhanced service to customers. Crown Group approached Bespoke Computing to help deliver the project, which sees tablet technology taken on site to relay real-time information back to site and head offices. The hardware and support systems for the project have been supplied by Telford-based Bespoke Computing, which has experience in delivering communication solutions for off-site employees. Managing director Chris Pallett said: “We’ve successfully rolled out a similar scheme for vets, particularly those working in rural areas, so that they could check and complete paperwork in the field without having to return to the practice.

“The Crown Group project takes this a step further, and we’re really happy to see the initial results which clearly demonstrate that mobile technology, in this case Windowsbased tablets, can support a variety of different sectors.” Crown Landscapes, based near Shrewsbury, provides commercial landscape services to businesses across the country including blue chip companies, commercial developers, top 50 construction firms, retailers and the public sector. Managing director Gareth Emberton said: “For us, it was about improving the flow of information both in terms of sending documents and plans from the office to supervisors in the field but also coming back the other way, such as realtime photos of what’s happening on site. “The information can be uploaded into our server at the office using Cloud technology, and we have real-time data available to us which means we’re more responsive, and ultimately able to offer an enhanced service to our customers.” The tablet technology has already been used by Crown Group staff on construction sites including a multimillion pound school development in North Wales; and at Aberystwyth University on a Balfour Beatty led project to create a new £45m halls of residence. Mr Emberton added: “Previously we may have had staff having to divert to pick up drawings or plans, but this technology at our fingertips means there will be many occasions where we’re saving hours spent on the road.” Bespoke Computing, which is based in Stafford Park, Telford, advises and supports organisations across a wide range of industries in Shropshire, the wider West Midlands and beyond. www.bespokecomputing.com

Increased UK coverage Green-Tree Soils increase Southern coverage with addition of two new partner production sites The Green-tree soils and growing media division of Green-tech has increased its UK coverage with the addition of two new partner production sites covering the Heathrow and Basingstoke areas. Green-tree is the soil arm of Greentech Ltd, a leading UK supplier to the landscaping, forestry and horticultural industries, distributing products that help to protect, enhance and improve plants and their environment. These new sites will provide contractors in London and the South East with improved access to the Green-tree brand and high quality British standard topsoil. After requests from landscapers, ground workers and architects in the London area for improved access to British standard topsoil, the team behind the brand went in a search for the perfect partner sites. The new Heathrow site, located a stone’s throw away from the airport is geared up to accommodate the London and London West areas, working in partnership with the UK’s leading independent construction and building materials group Brett Aggregates. The new Basingstoke site - also referred to locally as Little Bushy Warren will provide coverage for the Hampshire and South Coast regions. Greentree will distribute the Pro-Grow brand of British Standard

topsoil from this site operated by Veolia, a long standing partner of the business. The topsoil at both sites conforms to BS3882:2015 standards, independently tested by Tim O’Hare Associates. Green-tree topsoil is favoured amongst contractors due to its excellent fertility levels for soft landscaping projects, its year-round availability and the peace of mind that the topsoil supplied will be the same high quality from the first load to the last. The Pro-Grow topsoil, distributed in partnership with Veolia, is highly regarded within the industry and provides a consistent, organic growing medium for landscape and amenity projects. Green-tree topsoil is manufactured using organic compost and overburdened sand from quarries, all products that would otherwise end up in landfill. Green-tree topsoil is heavily used for landscaping and construction projects that are focused on environmental sustainability and maintaining their green credentials. Mark Wood Green-tree Business Manager comments: ‘The addition of the two new supplier agreements sites reinforces Green-tree’s commitment to the industry. We have invested heavily in both time and resource to achieve a premium British Standard topsoil that can be accessed by contractors in the London and South East areas. The Green-tree and Pro-

The Veolia Pro-Grow British Standard topsoil currently being distributed by Green-tree, is manufactured using Veolia Pro-Grow Pas100 compost and conforms to all the necessary industry standards. We look forward to working closely with the team to distribute to the South East areas a consistent, high quality supply of topsoil.” www.green-tree.co.uk Grow brands are growing from strength to strength with landscape contractors choosing the brands over other topsoil options knowing that their finished project will produce the result and plantings that their client envisaged.’ Brett Aggregates added: “The Greentree brand of topsoil complements our existing product range and is a natural addition to our Heathrow production site. We are impressed by the quality of topsoil currently in production and proud to partner such a well-respected brand such as Green-tree.”

Increased power and torque New mid-range McCormick tractors ideal for turf applications have replaced two of the famous marque’s best-selling ranges with increased power and torque from new engines, and a broader range of features to give added performance, fuel economy and driver comfort. Each of the three models in the McCormick X6 line-up comes in ‘standard’ and higher-spec ‘LS’ versions, main differences being in the hydraulics, wheel equipment, transmission speeds and availability of suspension for the front axle and driver’s cab. “The X6 Series covers applications previously met by the McCormick MC tractors and the top end of the McCormick X60 line,” notes Ray Spinks, sales director and general manager at McCormick distributor AgriArgo UK. “The X6 models are in many respects more advanced, with features not previously available, while higher power and torque outputs deliver increased performance.” A four-cylinder FPT engine with an emissions management system widely regarded as one of the most efficient available powers the newcomers. Outputs for draft implements are 111hp, 121hp and 130hp, while the Power Plus feature releases another 10hp and more torque at transport speeds and when powering a pto-driven implement. “In standard form, these tractors offer a relatively simple but comfortable and easy to use tractor with a smart, wellequipped cab and good manoeuvrability,” says Paul Wade, McCormick product specialist. “The ‘LS’ version, with higher flow load sensing hydraulics, more transmission and pto options, and suspension for the cab and front axle, meets more demanding performance needs.”

The base specification for all three McCormick X6 Series tractors includes items that often appear as options on other makes, such as a telescopic pick-up hitch, swivelling front mudguards, telescopic exterior mirrors and remote pto switches on the rear mudguards. Air conditioning, rear window wash/wipe, a radio, roof beacon and Deluxe air driver’s seat are also standard. The standard transmission is a 36x12 40kph configuration with a smooth power shuttle for fingertip direction changes. There is a choice of regular, eco 40kph or 50kph gearing – the second two providing a top speed at more economical engine revs – and creep gears and ground-drive power take-off can be added for specialist turf equipment applications. Also, the two-speed independent pto (which can be operated from the mudguards to make hitching to implements easier), can be swapped for a four-speed setup that provides 540rpm and 1000rpm at either full power or more economical engine speeds. At 66-litres/min – plus 38-litres/min dedicated to steering – the base gear pump hydraulics system provides enough oil flow for most turf tractor applications but a pressure and flow compensating closed centre hydraulics system with up to 110-litres/min output is also available. Cab suspension for added ride comfort and independent front axle suspension for increased stability when travelling on the road are also amongst the equipment options for these tractors, which come with a new four-post cabin. With its anti-drop door hinges and soft-shut latches, upmarket steering column-mounted instrument display, and easy to handle controls, it is clear that the X6 Power Plus tractors represent a significant advance for the McCormick range. info@agriargouk.com

Green Space Management in Coventry Back in the year 2000 the city of Coventry passed its entire stock of social housing – 17,500 homes in all – to the Whitefriars Housing Association, one of a number of associations operating in the West Midlands, Herefordshire and Worcestershire which are now part of the W M Housing Group. As well as upkeep of the housing stock, an essential part of maintaining an attractive and well-managed environment is care of the grass areas, open spaces and verges –1.2 million square metres of them in Coventry’s case. Until recently this task was in the hands of contractors, but now Whitefriars has started its own subsidiary, GreenWorks, to maintain the green areas. Ken Lindsay, supervisor at GreenWorks, has two assistants and 25 operatives to ensure that the rolling progamme of work is completed to a high standard. “When we took over from the contractors we had nothing,” Ken explains, “so the first job was to acquire the right equipment. We knew from past experience that Ferris and Wright produce tough, reliable machines so we asked a number of local suppliers to tender. After meeting the teams we placed the order with T H WHITE’s Redditch branch and I’m so glad we did... The support and back-up they have given us – particularly our rep Lee Miles – as we got the new operation up and running, has been outstanding.” GreenWorks has taken delivery of a Ferris FW35 flail mower, a large Ferris IS5100 rotary mower and five smaller IS2600 rotary mowers, together with five Wright Standers for confined and more difficult areas. Added to that were five Ifor Williams trailers for transporting the mowers to site. “From a standing start, T H WHITE has helped us maintain an environment we are all proud of,” Ken added. www.thwhite.co.uk www.thwhitegroundcare.co.uk

Colin Prentice and his dog Archie have beaten hundreds of other social media users to become the winner of Kubota UK’s #MyKubota 2016 competition. Colin uploaded a photo demonstrating ‘a day in the life of his Kubota’ on his farm and was selected by a judging panel of experts as one of the top five entries. Colin can now reap his rewards with £500 worth of Virgin Experience Days vouchers from Kubota. Colin and his 6-year-old Jack Russell Terrier Archie, from Aberdeen, have been using a 1986 B7100D compact tractor for two years for every day tasks such as mowing, ploughing and trailer pulling on the farm.

Wide area rotary mower Ransomes Jacobsen has launched the latest machine in their MP Series of wide-area mowers. The Ransomes MP653 XC is the world’s first and only wide area rotary mower with a 4.27m (14 foot) cutting width, increasing productivity by up to 25% (up to 1 hectare per hour more) over traditional 3.4m (11 foot) mowers. Designed and manufactured at Ransomes Jacobsen’s European headquarters in Ipswich, the MP Series is primarily targeted at the municipal sector, and provides multiple options from a single design platform. The initial two machines in the MP Series were the Ransomes MP493 and MP653, widearea rotary mowers powered by 49hp and 65hp Kubota diesel engines and featuring three all-new rotary decks – one out-front and two wing decks. In June 2015 the next two machines were launched using the same operator platform but with five cylinder cutting units instead of rotary decks. The Ransomes MP495 and MP655 are replacements for the Ransomes Commander, the stalwart of municipal wide-area cylinder mowers, first introduced back in 1993. The Ransomes MP653 XC is the largest in the MP Series of wide area rotary mowers and is powered by a 65hp Kubota diesel engine. Using the same proven powertrain, hydraulics, and platform, the decks and cutting systems have been upgraded to achieve this new 4.27 cutting width. It will deliver a zero uncut circle for effortless back-and-forth mowing and manoeuvring around tight obstacles. The use of lightweight, high-strength steel results in a significant reduction in gross weight, which contributes to greater fuel savings, a reduction in trailer weight requirements and reduced ground pressure. The Ransomes MP653 XC again features the popular AdaptiCut system, which automatically adjusts mow speed to ensure consistent cut performance, even when mowing through thick grass. The outer decks fold up for transportation, whilst still providing excellent sideways visibility for the operator when driving on the road, and distributes weight for improved stability and ride quality. The ergonomic design provides an impressive transport width of just 1.67 metres. All units are held in place for transport with an electrically-operated fail-safe locking system.

weed control

Sap-sucking bugs The controlled release of insects which feed on Japanese knotweed is being stepped up at locations across south Wales. Thousands of the bugs were released at six undisclosed sites last month with more over the summer with the aim of establishing a permanent population. Scientists hope the insects, brought from Japan, will stunt the super weed, allowing native species to flourish. Japanese knotweed was first found in the wild in Wales in the 1880s. Scientists at the Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International, a not-for-profit agricultural research organisation, have been licensed to test the insects, a psyllid or plant louse called Aphalara itadori, since 2010. Dr Dick Shaw is leading the project with the sap-sucking bugs. He told Radio Wales’ current affairs programme Eye on Wales: “We’re trialling different techniques of getting establishment. It’s quite challenging to get these things established. “I’m reassured that it took six attempts to get the grey

squirrel established in Britain and that seems to have done fairly well for itself. “We’re now allowed to work near rivers so we’ve chosen riparian sites with high humidity and the chance of success is much higher.” He said the aim is for the insects to suppress Japanese knotweed’s vigour so it “won’t be the aggressive invader it is now”.

Permeable geotextile Wrekin Products has created a new ready-to-display POS unit to help landscapers find its FasTrack 609 woven geotextile geotextile for separating layers and suppressing weeds. Designed for separation of sub-soils and stone fills, FasTrack is a permeable geotextile that is simple to install and provides a robust separating layer for minimum cost. It is ideal for access roads, hard standings, parking areas, driveways, footpaths, patios and decking. For bigger jobs, Wrekin offers a van-friendly size of its standard FasTrack 609 roll. Factory folded to a 2.25m roll length rather than the normal 4.5m, the roll still contains the full 100m x 4.5m but has a compact size to fit in most vans or pick-ups. FasTrack is part of Wrekin’s wider range of geotextiles, designed for cost-effective, high-performance ground engineering. www.wrekinproducts.com

weed control

“Misinformation is as big a risk as knotweed itself” Senior figures from the Japanese knotweed remediation industry have called for greater transparency as the UK enters “epidemic” risk levels and property sellers, agents, advisors and insurers find themselves liable. The invasive plant, whose rapid growth can destroy manmade and natural structures in its path, threatens billions of pounds’ worth of property transactions every year, and many professionals risk lawsuits as well as lost business. Japanese Knotweed Control, one of the UK’s first specialist remediation companies and a founder member of the Invasive Non-Native Specialists Association (INNSA), is leading a campaign to combat misinformation and to introduce a higher-level national standard for the management of the destructive weed. David Layland, founder and managing director, explains: “We’re embarking on a public communications campaign that we’ve nicknamed ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’, because one of the biggest challenges, besides getting rid of the plant itself, is the amount of misinformation and misconceptions that exist in the UK. “The biggest of these is the myth that once knotweed has been treated, the problem has gone away. In reality, without a proper warranty, insurance and long-term remediation strategy, your knotweed treatment can leave you just as much at risk as when you first spot the distinctive leaves.” When a herbicide is applied to the plant, it translocates around its extensive root system and stops plant cells from growing. Over time the plant just rots into the soil but until it has completely decomposed, small nodules of viable material may still be present. If the plant is left alone, herbicide is by far the least expensive and a highly effective treatment method. However, another common problem is that the plant in fact stores nutrients in a maze of roots underground enabling it to hibernate during the winter months. The plant appears dead, but in fact is very much alive and if disturbed, will spread and cross contaminate providing a nasty surprise in the summer. The UK’s mild, wet winter coupled with this year’s humid summer has encouraged the growth of the plant which can grow up to 40mm per day. It can take less than 0.7g of rhizome (subterranean stem) – no bigger than a fingernail – for an infestation to take hold, resisting domestic weed killers and growing through bricks, mortar and tarmac in its path. As many as two thirds of UK mortgage brokers have

reported that they have had transactions negatively affected by Japanese knotweed, with many forced to withdraw mortgage applications because of the presence of the invasive plant. Japanese Knotweed Control is reassuring property owners, estate agents and conveyancers that the presence of knotweed on a property should not affect a sale provided the remediation strategy has the correct warranties and insurance. David Layland continues, “If you have the right information and back-up from your knotweed professional, such as insurance and warranties, then you should have not only peace of mind but also the legal guarantee that solicitors and conveyancers are looking for to demonstrate the knotweed issue is under control.” Japanese Knotweed Control was the first company in the industry to offer an insurance-backed warranty on all its treatment options. All work undertaken is fully insured and underwritten by Lloyds of London specifically for the treatment of non-native plant species and carries professional indemnity cover for £5 million including structural damage cover.

Council stops spraying chemicals

The Shetland Islands is located 110 miles north of mainland Scotland, has a coast line of 1,679 miles long and rains an average of over 250 days a year. With this in mind and taking into consideration that future legislation could prevent the spraying of chemical weed killers they have become another local authority to purchase the Cardley Wave Mid Series. Since launching in the UK early last year, Cardley Wave have helped local authorities achieve a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to weed control and now more and more local authorities are looking to do the same. Cardley Wave offers an alternative to the conventional way of killing weeds using nothing but hot water to do the job. William Spence, Executive Manager – Environmental Services, Shetland Islands Council said: “The environmental advantages are that we are not using chemicals in any form thus reducing the risk of contaminating waterways and effects on pets and wildlife.” With the machine also being used for the removal of algae and moss from paved areas around the main streets, William went on to add: “We also hope this will reduce slips and falls due to algae and moss, making all our paved area and lane areas safer for the public. The islands are exposed to the weather elements more so than other parts of the country, previously limiting the use of traditional chemical controls, but by using the Mid-Series these limitations have been eradicated as it can be utilised

in most weathers including wind and rain. This hand in hand increases productivity with the machine being used every day. “We are also benefiting from the machine being dual purpose so we are able to power wash at the same time as we have been weeding. That is reducing time by not having to revisit the area.” Not only are the council and its employees benefiting from the environmental and multifunctional advantages of the Cardley Wave system, but it has also been a hit with the community; increasing public perception and enhancing relationships. Unlike chemical spraying, there are no mandatory training to operate the unit; this is something that William hopes to take advantage of in the future by promoting community participation which will bring the community closer in their battle against weeds! The future of glyphosate, a widely used component in herbicides, is still hanging in the balance with the license given a temporary stay of execution and EU members unable to come to a majority vote on any long term decision. As things stand, glyphosate can be used for just one or two more seasons, before chemical spraying could potentially become a thing of the past especially in public parks, playgrounds and gardens with MEPs urging the EU to put a ban on the use in these specific areas. If you are interested in reducing your dependence on conventional chemical spraying call us on 01254 707407 www.cardley-wave.co.uk

Brass is Class Brass is perhaps the most durable metal in common use. It has been used for coins since the 16th Century. Martin Bennett reports. everyone’s taste, however aged or antique brass finish is a much more pleasing colour and blends in excellently with a garden environment.

Brass is simply copper strengthened with Zinc and is exceptionally strong and durable. If you want garden lights to last a lifetime then choose Brass. Natural brass is a golden colour which is not to

Until recently most Brass lighting was made for the USA market where 12v prevails, however Lumena have now worked with manufacturers to make 240v versions of some of the items, namely Brass Brick lights and Spike lights. Although 12v is by far the safer and less liable to trip, many electricians prefer to use 240v as it can be more convenient to them not to use a transformer. Wall lights are also available in brass to match the garden lights, together with step, path and decking lights. Brass unlike Stainless Steel needs no maintenance and is also the best material for underwater and fountain applications. Brass need not be expensive, in fact the cost is often cheaper than Copper and Stainless steel. Martin Bennett is the founder of Lumena Lights. www.lumenalights.com

Supporting future arborists Först, supplier of high performance and robust woodchippers, is helping to support the next generation of arborists through its partnership with Capel Manor College. The Middlesex based college, which has over 3,000 students, offers a wide range of land-based courses including Arboriculture & Countryside, Saddelry & Leatherwork and Horticulture & Landscaping. Först donated an ST6 woodchipper to the college for their Arboriculture & Countryside courses after meeting with the college lecturers and students last summer. With over 200 students spread across Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Professional Short Courses and Apprenticeships, the wheeled machine plays a vital role in providing practical training for wood chipping and felling courses. Predominantly used by apprentices and Professional Short Course students, the machine enables students to achieve their required Certification of Competence, allowing them to begin their career in their chosen arborist sector. Speaking of the partnership, Derek McFarland, Deputy Head of the School of Arboriculture & Countryside at Capel Manor College, said: “When training our students, their safety is always of the upmost importance and Först machines are, in my opinion, the industry leader

for safety innovations. The safety features including the Autointelligence feed control and LED lights, are weather proof, low maintenance and robust, with the innovative design of the touch sensors preventing them from breaking down, which is often the case with safety buttons. In addition, they are the quietest machines I’ve encountered, which is another fantastic safety feature for the students, ensuring they can hear their course mates and lecturers at all times.” The ST6 was donated to the college last year after the students and staff were invited to Först’s factory in Hampshire to receive exclusive training on the machines and discover how they are manufactured. www.forst-woodchippers.com

Help reduce deforestation Improving co-operation between nations’ farming and forestry sectors will help reduce deforestation and improve food security, a UN report has suggested. Between 2000 and 2010, tropical nations saw net forest loss of seven million hectares per year and a net gain in farmland of six million hectares. Collaboration between the sectors would reduce environmental damage and improve social and economic outcomes, it said. The report showed that the greatest net loss of forests and net gain in agricultural land between 2000-2010 occurred in low income countries, where rural populations were growing. It added that large-scale commercial agriculture accounted for about 40% of deforestation; subsistence farming was responsible for 33%; infrastructure 10%; urban expansion 10%; and mining 7%. But it said that there were large regional variations within those figures. For example, large-scale agriculture accounted for 70% of deforestation in Latin America but just one third in Africa, where small-scale agriculture was the biggest cause of deforestation.

Loss of tree cover A new report has heightened concerns that Great Britain is losing its productive forest resource - because trees that are harvested are not being replaced. Estimates of Change in Canopy Cover in British Woodlands, published by The Forestry Commission, shows that for every 100 hectares of coniferous woodland harvested in 2006, only just over half has been restocked with productive conifer species Forestry sector bodies Confor, UK Forest Products Association (UKFPA) and Wood Panel Industries Federation welcomed the report, but warned the failure to restock, combined with a historically low level of new planting, threatens the longer term future of the forestry and timber sector, which supports more than 40,000 jobs and contributes £1.7 billion annually to the UK economy. The report shows some of the harvested forest is being replanted with broadleaf species, but large areas are being left unplanted as open ground or left fallow for long periods, reducing the timber available to make

M100 SAWMILL

the everyday products that society needs, from wood for building homes to fencing, decking, furniture and packaging for food The failure to restock areas that have been forested has long-term implications. The UK is the world’s third largest net importer of timber and wood products, and at the beginning of the 20th Century had only 5 per cent forest cover. Forest cover has expanded to 13 per cent (against a European average of 36 per cent) and the UK has developed a world-class forestry sector. The private forestry sector has raised concerns about both the quantity and quality of restocking in the UK’s productive softwood forests for many years. Global trade in timber is dominated by softwood and about 90 per cent of all wood products used in the UK are from softwood forests. The supply crisis has been exacerbated by the failure of the UK and devolved governments to meet planting targets. In 2015, only 122 hectares of new woodland (all broadleaves) were planted in Wales compared to a target of 2,000 hectares, whilst in recent years the Assembly Government has converted nearly 20,000 hectares of productive conifer woodlands to either broadleaves or open ground. In England, the latest official statistics show that only 546 hectares were planted between April 2015 and March 2016 - less than 30 per cent of the annual target needed to meet a manifesto commitment by the Conservative Party to plant 11 million trees by 2020.

A tree fungus could provide green fuel that can be pumped directly into tanks, scientists say. The organism, found in the Patagonian rainforest, naturally produces a mixture of chemicals that is remarkably similar to diesel. “This is the only organism that has ever been shown to produce such an important combination of fuel substances,” said Gary Strobel, a plant scientist from Montana State University who led the work. “We were totally surprised to learn that it was making a plethora of hydrocarbons.” In principle, biofuels are attractive replacements for liquid fossil fuels used in transport that generate greenhouse gases. The European Union has set biofuel targets of 5.75% by 2010 and 10% by 2020. But critics say current biofuels scarcely reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cause food price rises and deforestation. Producing biofuels sustainably is now a target and this latest work has been greeted by experts as an encouraging step.

Plane Tree Wilt The threat posed to Britain’s plane trees by plane tree wilt (Ceratocystis fimbriata f. platini), an ascomycete fungus which originated in the eastern United States, is growing as it works its way northwards through France at a faster range than previously. It reached the ports of southern Europe on infected crating material in World War Two, spreading rapidly through Italy and into Switzerland. It was also reported recently in Greece. Colin Hambidge

Keith Sacre of Barcham Trees recently attended a two-day workshop on plane tree wilt, organised by Treework Environmental Practice, at Castelfranco Veneto, Treviso, Italy, and led by Lucio Montecchio, professor of Forest Pathology and Ornamental Trees Pathology at the University of Padova (Padua), who has been studying plane tree wilt for nearly 20 years. I asked Keith, who was the only nurseryman on the course, about the fungus and the workshop.

CH: What is plane tree wilt and what does it do? KS: It is a fungal infection which causes canker stain on plane species. The fungus causes vascular dysfunction, canopy dieback and then death. There is no cure. It is a wound parasite, and prevention can only be achieved by control of the movement of infected wood or wood products which allow the fungus to spread to non-infected trees through wounds. The implications for plane trees in Britain are huge, particularly in urban areas. What was the purpose of the workshop? It gave us the opportunity to view plane tree wilt in the field, to see the sanitation methods involved when felling infected trees and the chance to look at the symptoms under a microscope so that we are able to identify the fungus should it reach the UK.

Based on the traditional Italian wood fired oven shape, Etna wood fired ovens are some of the most aesthetically pleasing on the market, and are endorsed by our Celebrity Brand Ambassador Aldo Zilli.

How easy is it to identify plane tree wilt? The first thing Lucio did was to take us on a tour of several sites to look at other threats to plane, and their symptoms, which can be confused with the early stages of plane tree wilt. For example, we looked at the effects of anthracnose, herbicide damage, stress symptoms and where accelerated growth Gigant causes longitudinal bark splitting. We then went to sites to view trees with plane wilt.

Why should that be? It’s because the fungus spirals within the vascular system around the main trunk of the tree. Lucio showed us how the wilt can be identified by visually noting the boundary between functional and dysfunctional bark, and then scraping off the surface. It was easy to see the boundary line between necrotic and healthy tissue; the dead was brown, the live a yellow-green. This boundary was distinctly linear and flat, and absolutely Ireland & Scotlandclear Tel: said 028 no 2073 2700 Mob: 07791 751393 to see. How do plane trees become affected by this wilt? Lucio told the group that the infection of live planes is primarily transmitted via open wounds - most commonly on dirty arboricultural tools. A diseased tree is then capable of infecting its neighbours

All the ground for 250sq m or more around the tree was covered in polythene and the debris which fell onto it was carefully disposed of, as were our plastic suits. Did you inspect the felled tree? Yes, and when we looked at cross-sections the staining and infection pattern were apparent. What did you learn from looking at the work of the fungus under the microscope? This session was also very useful and informative. We looked at cultures of plane tree wilt and learned from Lucio how to identify its characteristic features. He reassured us that to arborists the symptoms are readily identifiable under the microscope because they are unique and totally unlike anything else, so there can be no question of a mistake.

through natural root grafting. Death occurs when vascular dysfunction occurs all round the plane. There is some risk of aerial dispersal or by means of flying vectors such insects and other animals, but Lucio emphasised that there is no clear evidence of these having an important role. The fungus can also spread through natural root grafts where trees are usually less than 15 metres from each other with physical obstacles such as pavements or water which encourage roots to develop towards neighbouring trees. So the spread of plane tree wilt is in great part due to human activity? Yes. Saws and chainsaws transfer debris in the form of sawdust from tree to tree if they are not cleaned thoroughly after use on every tree. And the fungal spores can remain live on sawdust for up to two years. What is best practice in sanitation relating to planes? We went on to watch an arboricultural crew felling an infected plane, which gave us an insight into this. Our group had to wear disposable plastic clothing to ensure there was no risk of us bringing sawdust back home. Two hours wearing plastic bags in 30ÂşC was quite arduous!

www.landscapermagazine.com

Was the workshop useful? Definitely! The more we can understand about plane tree wilt, its spread and prevention, the more we can do to help defend plane trees here in Britain. Its march may appear relentless, but good husbandry will certainly play a major part in keeping it at bay.

Pond of the Month This is a central, circular pond with surrounding curved pools designed by Carolyn Grohmann of Secret Gardens. Water Gems, the contractors are an Edinburgh based landscape and water features specialist. They have several prestigious awards to their name and are headed up by Nick Benge who made Water Gems one of our first registered Firestone Installers. After so many years’ practice Water Gems are now experienced enough to line just about anything. These lovely curved structures are lily ponds built into a slope so the first thing to do was terrace the part of the garden that was to take the pools. Then the structure needed to be built with poured reinforced concrete and rendered block work walls.

These lovely curved structures are lily ponds built into a slope Nick says that Firestone PondGard is perfect for sealing the structure because it will accommodate small changes if the structures settle and any expansion or contraction due to temperature changes‌. (The garden is just north of Edinburgh after all). These liners are fully adhered using Firestone Bonding Adhesive, then Splice Tape and Quick Prime Plus join the liners together. The Form Flash is applied to the detailed work and to provide a fully water tight seal throughout. The pools had to be connected so that their water quality was consistent thereby making sure they didnt go different colours or behave differently. Nicks last problem was the large tree limb that overhung one of the pools and happened to be a roost for about twenty wood pigeons with predictable results underneath. The only solution was to cut off the bough and having done that the pools are now clean and perfectly clear. www.gordonlowproducts.co.uk

High water quality

With solutions suitable for small ponds to vast lakes, Otterbine’s wide range of aeration systems comprise aerating fountains, industrial aerators and diffused air systems. Each has unique features that work to increase oxygen levels and circulate oxygen rich water, keeping water quality high, and inhibiting algae, aquatic weeds and odours. www.otterbine.com

Bluetooth irrigation controller Otterbine is advising greenkeepers to aerate water hazards now, before oxygen depletion or stress situations occur. Maintaining high water quality is an essential part of successful golf course management all year round, but, as greenkeepers will know, both the light and heat generated by the spring/summer sun can quickly lead to severe problems in lakes and ponds. The resultant warmer water and excess nutrients, combined with low oxygen levels and minimal circulation, prematurely ages water and throws the natural ecosystem out of balance. This can lead to algae, aquatic weeds and odours, as well as sludge build up and even dead fish. In order to avoid this, a proper water management system should be put in place as soon as possible. Robert Jackson, Irrigation Manager at Lely Turfcare, Otterbine’s UK distributor, explains why it’s vital to act now rather than later. “Waiting until symptoms of poor water quality appear before implementing good water management could be detrimental to both the environment and greenkeepers’ budgets,” he warns. “These unwanted symptoms impact on the golfer’s experience and the golf club’s reputation, and may also require costly fixative programmes. Once a lake has lost its ecological balance, it goes into crisis, at which point the cost of restoring it dramatically rises. As well as often being more expensive to implement, reactive solutions tend to be less friendly to the environment too,” Robert explains. To prevent or eliminate stagnant water in a pond or lake, the most natural water quality management solution is to introduce aeration; which is where Otterbine’s aeration systems can help.

One of the neatest ways of installing an irrigation system is to locate all of the control valves in underground chambers. Not only does this hide away all of the messy control valves, but it prevents unauthorised tampering with the control equipment. The only problem with this solution is when you do want to change the watering times, you have to grovel in the underground chamber. To solve this problem, a fully waterproof Bluetooth irrigation controller is now available in the UK. The controller itself is IP68 rated, so it is designed to be fully immersed in water and will control up to 4 solenoid valves, plus a master vale and a rain sensor. The app itself will store the details of up to 200 controllers, as well as manually start, stop or suspend the controller from up to 10m away. For extra security a passcode can be added. Access Irrigation also produce valve box kits which include a valve box and also two or four irrigation valves. These are designed to be buried in the garden, with an underground supply pipe bringing water to the valve box and then undergroung pipes going from the control valves to the variour areas to be watered. In ‘Home Gardens’ a DB valve kit is available to comply with the Water Regulations; this connects via the master valve of the controller. For very simple systems, Access also produce a Bluetooth tap timer, which can be operated from an app. Tel : 01788 823811 sales@access-irrigation.co.uk

Quick to install and stays safe Gripsure has launched its first decking tiles, giving buyers the option of decking that is both quick to install and stays safe in wet weather. The timber decking tiles feature Gripsure’s anti slip inserts and are proving to be a popular choice for roof gardens and balconies, where the size and weight of traditional decking can be a problem. Quicker to install than decking boards, because there is no need for a sub frame, the tiles are also far easier to remove for access to the ground below. Available in softwood or hardwood, the tiles are approximately half a square metre and include Gripsure’s safety design: aggregate inserts that ensure they don’t get slippery, even in wet or icy weather. With customers including the National Trust, Alton Towers, Eden Project and Holiday Inn, as well as schools, universities and hospitals, Gripsure specialises in decking that is stylish and safe. Offering next day delivery to 95% of the UK, Gripsure offers a wide range of anti slip decking options for commercial projects and homeowners.

Positive impact Last year, the Malmö Municipality in Sweden unveiled the opening of Slussplan, a brand new urban park. The park combines a unique stairway providing access to Malmö’s historic canal, green space for the residents of the surrounding neighbourhood and triangular seating made from sustainable Kebony wood. Following the outright ban imposed upon tropical hardwood in Stockholm, and a growing trend in

European cities of legislating against, and voluntarily avoiding the use of timber imported from the tropics in public projects, the builders wanted to ensure that the materials chosen were sourced from sustainably managed, non-tropical forests. Kebony’s sustainable wood was therefore selected for the ‘urban hang-out ’ benches along the promenade, due to the material’s positive impact in reducing demand for high performance tropical timber. www.kebony.com

Life across UK roundabouts Pictorial Meadows has helped eight roundabouts across the UK burst into bloom with a profusion of meadow flowers, bulbs and hardy perennials as part of a two year project conceived and funded by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and its philanthropic arm, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. The £130,000 programme is the culmination of a longterm project to celebrate Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s 20 years in the UK. The transformation of roundabouts across the country with beautiful and sustainable urban meadows is the result of two years of careful planning, preparation, planting and tending. Enterprise engaged with leading experts in meadow technology to bring the project to life and approached the renowned Professor Nigel Dunnett of the Landscape Department at the University of Sheffield to design each location. Dunnett is one of the world’s leading experts in planting design and technology and his work came to national prominence when he created the much talked about meadows for the Olympic Park in 2012.

In addition to providing long-lasting displays of colour over several months, the designs and seed mixes used on the roundabouts have been developed to flower year on year with the minimum of care. In fact, the flowering technologies developed by Nigel Dunnett and Pictorial Meadows have been shown to reduce maintenance costs for local authorities, as well as lowering the disruption to traffic required when gardening equipment is taken on site at roundabouts and roadside locations. The mix of plants at each site also fosters biodiversity and wildlife. They are especially appealing to local bee and butterfly communities, which thrive when the carefully selected plants are in bloom. www.pictorialmeadows.co.uk

The £130,000 programme is the culmination of a long-term project to celebrate Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s 20 years in the UK. In partnership with local authorities in Glasgow, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Swindon and Woking, councils identified suitable roadside locations for the gardens. The roundabouts were then planted by Pictorial Meadows, pioneers in the commercial development of hardy seed mixes and turfs that create the naturalistic planting styles developed by the University of Sheffield’s research. In all, two acres of meadow were planted in the autumn and winter of 2015, together with a range of bulbs, shrubs and flowering species carefully selected for the climate and growing conditions prevalent in each location. Developed by the University of Sheffield and implemented by Pictorial Meadows, a special innovation is the cultivation of assorted ‘pre-grown’ meadow mats at a site in Lincolnshire to provide sufficient meadow for the Enterprise project. The mats were grown off-site to allow for intensive irrigation essential to ensuring the young plants establish a strong root base.

Prestigious gold medal Pershore College student Lydia Knight has scooped a prestigious gold medal for her stunning coastal show garden at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park. Lydia Knight, a second year BSc Horticulture student, was competing in the RHS Young Planting Designer 2016 competition which aims to find the best emerging talent from the Landscape and Plant Design arena. Lydia was partnered with a finalist from the Young Landscape Contractor 2016, Ewan Sewell, to create a complete garden at the show. Each garden was given a different style and soil type to produce either a countryside, coastal or urban focus and the entire garden took two weeks to build, with the planting completed in just four days at the end of the build. Lydia also combined the planning of the garden with her wedding, which took place at the beginning of July.

THE

LANDSCAPER

By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe So now the women are in charge, May, Merkel and quite likely Clinton. About time too. The boys have made a complete cock up of everything. The same however cannot be said about The Landscaper. It’s still a man’s world. I have dedicated my whole life to studying landscaping ever since I was told that the job of editorial assistant was mine last month. I am a little disappointed with my new position so far. I thought a degree in Media Studies would take me further. The Landscaper offices, although adorned with a few Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula), are best described as bleak. Every morning I fall out of the train at Twickenham station and gaze up at Bridge House. The headquarters of a proper publishing company producing fine magazines like Horticultural Week. I bet the staff in there are not forced to go out to the Poundstore and replace a hole punch out of their own money. Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court have all taken place and only the boys in the office managed to get invites. They returned to the offices with tales of canapes, strawberries and fine champagne. Needless to say they were in an extremely happy and slightly emotional mood. The rest of us were allowed 30 mins at lunchtime to drink diet cokes and cheese rolls which were supplied as a special treat. There are two men that rule the roost around here the young one and the old one. The young one rarely turns up much before noon and the old one knocks off at 3 pm after a long lunch. I’m looking forward to the Landscape show in Battersea next month. I will be on our stand for two days seeking out news, views, scandal or gossip. Please do come and say hello. THIS MONTHS SNIPPETS!! In a recent poll of 1,005 people, for Composite Wood 25 % said they wanted a Garden Room as a space to get away from the husband, wife or children. Man Cave and She Cave were the top categories. College is appealing for volunteers to help restore the historic gardens at the Broomfield Hall campus after it secured a £4,000 grant to further improve the campus grounds and boost its appeal as a visitor attraction. More parks and green spaces than ever will be flying the Green Flag Award this year – more than 1,600 across the UK. The Beacon is a charming family restaurant and bar located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, which has recently completed construction of a roof terrace made of sustainable Kebony decking. A surge in the number of minor bumps and collisions caused by pedestrian’s intent on collecting Pikachu and pals – has led a leading UK street furniture firm to rethink the bollard. According to Townscape Products, there has been a sharp, entirely unquantifiable increase in the number of collisions between pedestrians and objects in the street as engrossed gamers collect Pokémon Go characters. BollardsHQ, the bollard division of Townscape, has unveiled a concept product that could help Pokémon proof town centres – a cushioned bollard sleeve. If anyone walked into me whilst looking at their smart phone they would get a sharp jab in the eye. A recent survey has suggested that an impressive garden is the biggest turn on for home buyers. Not in my case, George Clooney does it for me. The survey of 1200 UK residents revealed that outside of location, 60% of us would be most swayed by an impressive garden when buying a home. A new survey on Britain’s garden habits has revealed that three per cent of us like to indulge in nude sunbathing. The same poll for GardeningExpress.co.uk

says 72% admitting to peeping over the fence or listening in when their neighbours were using the garden. I won’t be getting my kit off again. George does it for me
