Environmental impact Football and Rugby stadiums have a huge environmental impact. Just keeping a pitch in top condition requires regular watering, under-pitch heating to prevent freezing in the winter, and even the use of highpower lighting rigs to promote grass growth. Teams are starting to get wise to environmental issues with clubs around the world starting to make efforts to become more eco-friendly. Dartford’s Princes Park stadium incorporates some excellent features. The stadium roof has a sedum roof blanket, a living roof that

provides a natural air filtration system. Solar panels on the roof serve the community changing areas and public toilets’ hot water storage cylinders. The roof is supported by treated Glulam timber beams. A Water recycling system serves the toilets within the clubhouse. Rain water is collected in the two large ponds at the north end of the stadium grounds. Underfloor heating on both levels of the clubhouse. Low energy lighting. Increased fabric insulation to give the clubhouse better thermal retention and efficiency. Condensing boilers to provide a more energy efficient system. Also excavated earth was reused for landscaping the external courtyard areas around the stadium. Teams are starting to reduce water consumption. German club Nuremberg has a cistern that can hold 1,000 cubic metres of water at it’s home ground. The cistern stores rainwater that can be used to irrigate the pitch. Pavegen is demonstrating the potential of an alternative, renewable option: power-storing tiles. The 56mm “kinetic-harvesting” tiles sit under a pitch’s Astroturf surface and flex fractionally every time a player takes a step. Each footstep generates around five watts per second. The system is supplemented by solar panels, which together help light the pitch and surrounding area for up to ten hours a night. Forest Green Rovers has succeeded in eliminating all nitrogen-based
fertilisers and chemicals from its ground maintenance. In their place, the club is using a range of plant-derived products, from compost tea and coconut wetting agent through to seaweed fertiliser. Charcoal is also added to the pitch to provide a carbon base for bacteria and fungus. People buy from people and in the digital world we now live in, exhibitions provide businesses with a unique marketing advantage - the opportunity to meet, connect and build rapport with prospects and customers. This is the show season - in this issue our editorial team report and preview all the major trade shows. In a summer full of shocks and surprises, Andrew Wilson’s revelation that a client had recently asked for a ‘dirt free’ garden’ and the designer’s subsequent conclusion that some people end up quite frightened of nature may not have made national headlines, but it highlighted the agenda of the European Landscape Conference. Carol Dutton investigates a social trend that could impact the way we work.

Parks Deserve Protection Parks provide a public service as hubs for physical activity for people of all ages, and should be funded by the public purse, the Association of Play industries (API), has told government. In its submission to the Communities and Local Government Committee Parks Inquiry, the API raises its mounting concerns about the link between local authority budget cuts and dwindling opportunities for children to play and be physically active. API Chair Mark Hardy says: “Children’s increasingly sedentary lifestyles call for policy action, and parks have a pivotal role to play. Play delivers wide-ranging developmental benefits, and evidence shows that children are more physically active if they have access to high quality outdoor play facilities. Investment in public play facilities and in the parks that host them should be a government priority, particularly for deprived communities, where need is greatest and obesity rates most prevalent.” As part of the government’s new national obesity strategy, and in addition to the soft drinks tax, the API calls for further levies on food and drink companies producing high sugar, salt and saturated fat products, particularly those targeted at children, to subsidise local facilities that address physical inactivity. Mark Hardy says: “In our urbanised developed world, many natural play areas have been eliminated. Many children have nowhere safe at home to play outdoors, so playgrounds - often located in public parks - form one of the few practical spaces where they can play. Children’s fundamental right to play is preserved in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which was ratified by the UK government in 1991. That right must be protected.” The Heritage Lottery Fund’s State of UK Public Parks 2016 report showed that 54% of households with children under five visit their local park at least once a week. Research by the API last year found that nearly four in ten (38%) parents and families were worried that playgrounds in their local community would close. 81% called for investment in parks and green spaces for public recreation, and 98.5% said it is important that their children are physically active. 95% of park managers surveyed for the HLF parks report said they expect revenue cuts to continue in the next three years. api@api-play.org

Encouraging people to use parks Outdoor exercise delivers an estimated £2.2bn of health benefits to adults in England each year, a study suggests. Scientists calculated that more than eight million people each week took at least 30 minutes of “green exercise”. They hope the results highlight how encouraging more people to use parks will help reverse the trend of rising obesity levels across the UK. The findings have been presented in the journal Preventative Medicine. “What we look at here is something that can be converted relatively simply into monetary values,” explained lead author Mathew White from the European Centre for Environment and Human Health at the University of Exeter. Dr White told BBC News that since the 1970s there had been studies showing the link between physical activity and health benefits. “There are very clear ideas about how much physical activity needs to be done in order to benefit health. What we have done here is to focus on those people who use the natural environment for enough activity a week (5x30 minutes) in order to justify gains in their health,” he added. “First of all we looked at the total number of people that went to the natural environment in England each year. Then we looked at the total number of people who engage in what we call an active visit (cycling, walking, running etc). “We then looked at how often they did that, and if they did it enough times to benefit their health which we converted into something called Quality Adjusted Life Years, which could then be converted into monetary estimates.”

When working in public areas such as parks, schools, hospitals or tourist hotspots, sound levels are always a concern so as not to disturb the peace. Likewise, noise levels are also an issue for the user with prolonged periods of exposure causing hearing problems and often, permanent damage. The Control of Noise at Work Regulations stipulate that hearing protection is mandatory for equipment over 85 decibels. At just 77 decibels, Billy Goat’s QuietVac series whispers while it works and has the lowest dB compared to other vacs on the market. The QVs are part of Billy Goat’s extensive vacuum range and are the world’s quietest vacuums. Available as either hand or self-propelled models the QVs can hold an impressive 36 gallons (136 litres) of debris in its collection bag. In addition to this, the machines feature exclusive dust sock technology that drastically reduces dust particles as small as 0.1 micron. for additional operator protection and improved air quality. Dust reduction is furthered by a state of the art, unique cyclonic filtration system that reduces dust in dry conditions without compromising on suction power. With an industrial width of 33” the QuietVacs are ideal for wide areas of commercial, industrial land and municipal clean up. This means that wide, vast areas and estates can be cleared with minimal effort and noise disruption. The self-propelled models utilities hydro drive transmission with forward and reverse speeds from 0 to 3mph to help negotiate tight spots with ease, making them first pedestrian vacuums to be able to do this. They also have durable front castors for easy operation on uneven surfaces, and the height can be adjusted from half an inch up to three inches.
A Bolton garden has won a prestigious accolade thanks to its luscious lawn, that rivals any premiership pitch! Keith Chuck, with the help of Danny Hibbert, has been announced as the winner of Britain’s Best Lawn 2016, a competition ran by the world’s largest petrol engine manufacturer for garden equipment, Briggs & Stratton. Britain’s Best Lawn is now in its 12th year and Mr Chuck joins an elite collection of passionate lawnowners across the country who have received the award. Keith, a keen gardener, meticulously maintains his garden and wanted to ensure that his lawn, which he believes to be the key focal point at the heart of any garden, matched the high standard of the rest of his garden so he enlisted the help of Danny Hibbert, who classes himself as somewhat of a turf expert due to his 17 years of lawn knowledge and expertise. Both Keith and Danny are big football fans so set upon creating a premiership pitch in the back garden. Seven years later and Danny now maintains the lawn for Keith and treats it as his own, visiting every single day in the height of summer to give it a daily mow – sometimes even twice a day. www.britainsbestlawn.co.uk.

With a humble hut at its heart
Draped in ivy, wildflowers and even a healthy covering of moss on the roof of a Plankbridge shepherd’s hut, a rediscovered garden design by Anne Jennings of Viridian Landscape Studio has won a Design Excellence Award in the BALI National Landscape Awards, for her work on a private residence in Chelsea. Created in the style of a once-forgotten family haven, the garden design includes a child’s playhouse from Dorset-based master hutmaker, Plankbridge, which has been lovingly entwined into the fabric of this magical space. One of the landscape industry’s highest accolades, this award recognises the challenges that were faced in creating an outdoor scene that looks as though it has evolved over many years, coupled with the access limitations that are synonymous with city projects. Careful planning and close working relationships with suppliers, such as Plankbridge were essential and in order to overcome a 600mm side alley access issue, Plankbridge’s master craftsmen delivered the shepherd’s hut in panels, so that the playroom could be constructed on-site. A standard Plankbridge Classic Shepherd’s Hut, complete with painted windows and door (optional upgrade to English oak), a solid French oak floor and a Farrow & Ball painted interior, starts at £22,225.20 including VAT and measures 12’ long. Longer and bespoke designs can be quoted for.

Changes afoot for UK’s largest turf growers
Pitchmark suppliers of line marking paint, machines and equipment, has announced it is to offer a three year warranty on its spray and transfer wheel line markers from November 1st. The 3 year manufacturer’s warranty will apply to Pitchmark’s range of ‘Eco’ spray markers, as well as the ‘Classic’ range of wheel-to-wheel markers. Speaking on the decision, Pitchmark MD Mark Rodman said: “Having used line markers for over 30 years as an exgroundsman, I know the importance of being able to rely on the machine working when you’re out on the pitch, in the cold and wet, on the morning of an important fixture.” “We’ve always had complete confidence in the quality of our materials and craftsmanship, as well as the reliability of our markers,” Mark added. “Extending the warranty to 3 years is a reflection of that, and - combined with our excellent levels of support, fast delivery and superior products – it’s something we feel will add to the Pitchmark customer experience.” The industry-leading Eco Club, Eco Pro and Classic line marking machines are all hand-built to a high standard at Pitchmark’s HQ in Bristol by their experienced manufacturing team, and are supplied in over 20 countries worldwide – including to major tournaments like World Cup 2014 and EURO 2016. “We made a conscious decision from the outset to build our line markers here in the UK,” Mark explained. “It gives us a level of precision, care and control we feel just can’t be matched on machines built elsewhere.” Additionally, Pitchmark’s complete range of line marking paints are offered with a 1-year warranty, as opposed to the standard 6 months offered by other paint manufacturers. It’s been exciting times at Harrowden Turf with the creation of the UK’s largest turf grower. The Harrowden Group’s interest in turf started with the acquisition of Norfolk based Q Lawns in 2007 followed by Lancashire based Turfland in 2010, Edinburgh based Stewartsturf in 2012 and Cambridgeshire based Spearhead Turf in December 2015. The creation of this turf industry powerhouse has been engineered by Stuart and Chantall Ridd-Jones earlier this year through the merger of these businesses and brands to form Harrowden Turf. Stuart and Chantall are both from farming backgrounds and are qualified accountants and so they have a good understanding of both large scale crop production and the running of a successful business. “We have been very lucky to have worked with some of the most experienced people in the turf industry over the last 10 years” says Stuart. “This has given us great insight into the industry, its challenges and what as a business we need to deliver every day to our customers.” The experienced team includes Dave and Angela Mackay from the Turfland business and pioneers in the online turf business Turfonline. They have recently taken the massive decision to return to New Zealand. Dave and Angela took over the running of the family business in 1996. Now, 20 years on and after guiding the business through a great many changes in the UK landscape industry, they have taken the difficult decision to step back from turf production and return to David’s home country of New Zealand. “How many people have the privilege of doing something they love and get paid for it?” says Dave, “well I can honestly say I have, I’ve really enjoyed the past 20 years. I’ve learnt a great deal and met some fantastic people. I’m going to be saying goodbye to a great team of people that I’ve enjoyed working with and grown very fond of. Although I’m now looking forward to new challenges and new opportunities I take away some great memories”. “It hasn’t been an easy decision to make” says Angela. “The business has been a major part of my life since childhood but

Dave and I now have to think of our family and what’s best for all of us going forward. We have thought long and hard about moving to New Zealand, it’s where Dave was brought up, where we started our life together when we got married and where the family spends time every winter. Two of our three children have reached a break-point in their education which means that now is the ideal time for us to make that move.“ She added “We are leaving the business on a strong financial footing, a fantastic team of people and a loyal customer base” says Angela. “We are proud of what we have achieved over the last 20 years and it’s great to have been part of the development of Harrowden Turf and the ambitious plans Stuart and Chantall have for the business going forward”. New hockey pitch One of the oldest schools in the country, The Royal Masonic School for Girls in Hertfordshire, has given its talented hockey players a new place they can call home with the installation of a brand new artificial grass pitch. For the first time, The Royal Masonic School for Girls has a place it can call home for competitive fixtures – a boost prompting 15 new students to join the local hockey club, which also calls the school its home. Better still, the versatility of the multi-sport pitch has led to its use for some football lessons and training, rounders lessons and touch rugby. www.tigerturf.com / www.agripower.co.uk

FEAR OF NATURE The Next Urban Challenge Greening our cities is admirable but how do we combat a fear of nature itself? By Carol Dutton
I
n a summer full of shocks and surprises, Andrew Wilson’s revelation that a client had recently asked for a ‘dirt free’ garden’ and the designer’s subsequent conclusion that some people end up quite frightened of nature may not have made national headlines, but it highlighted the agenda of last month’s (Sept.) European Landscape Conference. Entitled ‘Gardens and Landscapes in Changing Times’ set in the Royal Agricultural University at Cirencester, it was the first of its kind, fielded fourteen speakers from across the globe and aimed to address ‘Urbanization, and the Threat to Human Interaction with Nature.’ “This is not a debate that’s out in the public realm,” explains
Jennifer Gayner, conference director. “What the agenda lacks is a central body to debate the issue. We need to debate what the situation is and the best way forward. Debates within the public realm always start with people in the know and hopefully this conference will begin that process.” For those of us brought up in the country and old enough to have enjoyed a childhood before the arrival of the internet ‘fear of nature’ seems preposterous. “Children now live in a virtual world and a whole generation has grown up not playing outside,” Jennifer continues. “It is an age thing,” Andrew Wilson agrees, remembering blackberrying as a child and amazed that laden black berry bushes along a busy, public pathway near his surrey home have remained un-touched all season. “Picking free fruit doesn’t seem to be something people will buy into when they can get it in a supermarket,” he continues. Andrew, who gave the opening speech at the conference and has been gardening, landscaping and teaching for over thirty years, also thinks that some clients are concerned that nature is out of their control. “They have an O.C.D. reaction,” he explains. “We live in a culture where we can control every aspect of our interior environment and although some people embrace the fact that nature changes from day to day, others are frightened by it.”
Andrew Wilson suggests that “as designers we need to get off some kind of vanity trip and listen to what people want.” After all it’s hard to be afraid of something you love.

“We have clients who want to treat their gardens like their kitchens,” says John Wyer, landscape and design partner in Bowles and Wyer. “Everything has to be clean, clipped and in order with the paving regularly jet washed. We have to manage expectations and point out that nature isn’t like that. Things change and the garden needs to be managed.” John, whose conference speech was entitled ‘Is it really

It’s probably the first plants. offer plant alternatives where appropriate,” he continues. Guy is co-founder of the horticultural charity Streetscape which takes young, unemployed people through a one year apprenticeship at the end of which they will have gained NVQ level 2 in horticulture, passed their driving test and gained a practical license (in spraying for example) to launch them on a horticultural career. “Some of our apprentices are in bad shape to start with and this is all about providing them with an outlet and educating them. They came here on a visit the other day and for most of them it was the first time they had ever seen a plant nursery.” Dr. Catherine Heatherington, a garden designer and owner of Catherine Heatherington Designs spoke about the importance to wildlife of Brownfield sites and derelict spaces but also thinks that these areas can be important links with the past for people living in the surrounding communities. “In England we erase things,” she says. “It’s almost as if we’re ashamed of the past. By re-designing waste lands and industrial sites we can make reference to past changes so that people can see the passage of time. Local people will have worked in these areas, some of them all their lives, and although nature will have re-claimed the site to some extent, by making reference to the industrial past these areas will stimulate memories, help make sense of things and inform what we do now.” Catherine cites Carradah Park, a former B.P. site in Sydney Harbour, designed by Mac Gregor and
Coxall and the R.S.P.B reserve at Rainham Marshes designed by Peter Beard as prime examples. Andrew Wilson, who alongside business partner Gavin McWilliam comprises the Wilson McWilliam Studio has been favourably impressed by the research findings of another conference speaker Prof. James Hitchmough of Sheffield University. “James maintains that what people are looking for and what they respond to is drama and colour,” he says. “I’m wondering why, as designers we’re doing tasteful stuff. We’ve just done a corporate site, Kents Hill in

feature engage people in nature, if you give them lots of colour as in a wildflower calendar then they’ll love it,” he says. It could be argued that by greening our cities we’re missing the point, and city dwellers (apart from those forced to live there by employment opportunities alone) are there for the theatres, shops, galleries, bars and sheer bustle of urban life. But visitors to our beleaguered parks have soared this summer, and anything that will halt the march of paving, tarmac and concrete to reduce flood risk (as highlighted by our editor in the Aug. issue) needs to be encouraged,

Milton Keynes where the 1980s buildings were updated but there was lots of outside space. The developers had never been in this situation before, they had no pre-conceived ideas and they came to us to ask what they should do with it. We used Pinterest (which is like a huge pin board) to help them collect images of what they liked and give us a visual representation of their preferences.” The resulting landscape is full of colourful perennials interspersed with grasses and has been shortlisted for the 2016 SGD awards. “Perhaps it’s time, as designers we started listening to what people want,” Andrew continues, and according to James Hitchmough talking on the Utube video about the creation of the Olympic Park that’s colour. “If you really want to

along with the wildlife and its important role in sustaining biodiversity. I had a friend living in York who told me that she liked the country but wouldn’t want to spend the night there. If fear of nature is fear of the unknown then the more plants, trees and open spaces surrounding our citizens the better. Nature is an un stoppable force that will colonize the cracks in concrete nestle in gutters and roam unbidden over any surface that suits its needs with a tenacity that defies belief. It’s not going away, so let’s dissipate the fear by education, plant proximity, or historical connection. I suspect that Professor James Hitchmough’s solution, engaging the public with bold use of colour could well be a winner, even if it means as Andrew Wilson suggests that “as designers we need to get off some kind of vanity trip and listen to what people want.” After all it’s hard to be afraid of something you love.

SALTEX AQUA-AID Europe will be exhibiting at Saltex for the second time after a successful twelve months of bringing their range of products to the UK and European market. Renowned golfing venues such as Croke Park and Golf Course The Dutch, hosts of the 2016 KLM Dutch Open, are using a combination of OARS HS and PS, the Verde-Cal range and Worm Power on their sites. Following successful trials and meetings with product specialists at St George’s Park, Aqua-Aid products, supplied by ProSport UK, will be used as part of the main consumables program at the Burton-On-Trent training base, and Wembley Stadium. The focus of which is to get more control over the moisture levels on all facilities as well as to prevent black layer. Visitors to the stand will hear more about the sophisticated 3D technology within the OARS penetrating and hydrating surfactant range, which has made it an invaluable tool in managing the moisture level within the root zone. It is the only product on the market that performs a 3D action throughout the soil profile, making it the leader in its field. This season has also seen WormPower rise to prominence
in the market. This product is used for root mass development as well as thatch reduction, and has shown great results. It reduces disease pressure and increases germination rates after reseeding, making it a great tool during the season and especially during renovations. Verde-Cal G has proven extremely effective against black layer due to Calcium Sulfate (gypsum) being combined with thCa™, an organic complexing agent. thCa™ makes the Calcium in gypsum more readily available for soil or plant up-take without effecting or raising pH levels. www.aquaaideu.co.uk

SALTEX ECHO takes the stand at this year’s show with the latest range of High Torque brushcutters and the launch of their new range of Lithium Ion battery products. ECHO’s range of High Torque brushcutter with a 1:2 gear reduction ratio, deliver up to 50% more torque at the cutting head compared to previous models. What this means is a high torque brushcutter can provide the same cutting performance as a considerably larger machine but with a smaller, lighter engine. That translates into less weight and fatigue for the operator and the potential for high productivity. The ECHO range is exceptionally versatile and an ECHO High Torque brushcutter, fitted with a heavy-duty line or blade, can tackle a variety of tasks from cutting thick brush to trimming grass in the garden. There is therefore no need to have multiple brushcutters on site. The show will also see the official launch of the new ECHO range of Lithium Ion 50v battery products, which includes a Power Blower, Hedge Trimmer and Brushcutter. The 50v Lithium Ion battery products in the range generate greater power for heavy-duty performance, tackling the toughest of jobs while being lightweight and ergonomically designed for operator comfort. The advanced motor control maintains a high performance, with reduced energy consumption, to ensure longer intervals between charging periods; which is exactly what the busy operator needs to get the job done. Etesia will be launching a new weeding brush attachment on stand C050 at IOG SALTEX 2016, which is available for Etesia Hydro 124 models, for the safe removal of moss and weeds without the use of chemicals. SALTEX with various options including a gully brush, twisted flail shaft or verti-cutting unit making it incredibly versatile. This, combined with the design of the unit fits the requirements of councils, contractors and Groundsmen alike, working in an economically challenging environment. For even tighter spaces, Trilo offer a range of small vacuum units including the SU60 model for rapid vacuuming of leaves, litter, grass, wood chippings etc. The unit is installed onto a quick transport undercarriage with rotating nose wheel, with the drive provided by a quiet fan belt transmission connected to a Honda V-twin petrol engine. The adjustable exhaust spout can also be rotated 360o allowing material in even the most inaccessible of places to be extracted and placed into the removal container no matter the angle. From their blower range, the Trilo B7 is compact with a large capacity of 340m3/min which ensures a far reaching airflow to direct leaves, litter or standing water. Equipped with a hydraulically operated 180 degree reverse spout, the B7 can work quickly and conveniently to either side of the tractor and can access awkward corners with ease. A sturdy antiscalping roller and two wide castors help to follow contours and protect the plant on uneven surfaces. www.trilo.com Sherriff Amenity will be launching a number of new products, offering a range of special show offers and giving away free prizes. The main attraction on stand E060 will be the launch of the company’s new E² Pro range of liquid & soluble fertilisers as well as the launch of Nemaflo – a unique product to be used with beneficial nematode biological pest control product. The E² Pro liquid fertiliser range is based on advanced formulation technology that provides rapid leaf penetration and quickly relieves nutrient deficiency symptoms. The range includes six products to ensure that every turf requirement is met throughout the year and is tank mixable offering flexible application rates while providing consistent colour. A range of high quality water soluble fertilisers, E² Pro Soluble features five different products with a broad NPK analysis to cover a whole host of nutrient requirements. This highly efficient turf fertiliser can also be tank mixed with approved partner products to fulfil a broader nutrient requirement. Ideal for ‘spoon-
feeding’ at the beginning and end of the season, the E² Pro Soluble range can survive long-term storage and are ready to use in an instant. Those experiencing unwanted pests in their turf such as Leatherjackets and Chafer Grubs, will be interested in finding out more about Nemaflo - a unique carrier to be used in conjunction with beneficial nematode products such as Sherriff Amenity’s Sportnem-H and Sportnem T. This specifically designed carrier aids the movement of insect-parasitic or entomopathogenic nematodes into the soil profile to the target pest. The most important reason to use a carrier is that the nematodes, being very small, can get ‘stranded’ within a water droplet. Nemaflo will reduce their ability to spread out and establish and will aid the movement in order to get the nematodes to the target pest. www.sherriffamenity.com GreenMech will be showcasing two new chippers and many new features to its existing products at this year’s show. The cost-effective and simple-to-use Arborist 200 is the newest introduction to GreenMech’s traditional in-line format road-tow chipper range. As big brother to the established Arborist 150, the latest edition picks up where the 150 leaves off. Its tracked counterpart, the ArbTrak 200 delivers high ground clearance of 274mm providing access to difficult to reach sites or easy travel over rough terrain. Both are fitted with a generous 1200mm x 840mm in-feed chute which aids bushy brash reduction and leads to a generous 200mm x 280mm letterbox-style in-feed throat. The twin horizontal, hydraulic rollers, powered by a 45hp Kubota turbo diesel engine, efficiently and aggressively crushes woody material with minimal lateral movement. As standard, and with all GreenMech chippers, the new Arborist and ArbTrak 200’s come fitted with their patented disc-blade system, which gives up to 150 hours of chipping before requiring resharpening, plus a bottom-bar safety mechanism. All of these new products and features will be shown beside other popular machines from the GreenMech range, like the CS100, QuadChip 160 and the SAFE-Trak 19-28. In addition, a selection of GreenMech wood chippers, including the Arborist 130 and Arborist 150, will be displayed in a stunning new livery. www.greenmech.uk

Driveway bollard lighting Now that winter is approaching its time to think about making your driveway safe and inviting for visitors. By Martin Bennett available with a light output equivalent to 200 watts. They are longer than normal bulbs but will fit the better commercial bollards. Other high output LED candle bulbs
A gravel drive is a great deterrent for burglars as they cannot approach quietly, an illuminated drive is even better. The best way to light a driveway is to use illuminated bollards which both mark the edges and light the way. All types of bollards are available ranging from decorative to standard commercial styles. Avoid the low cost ones as they may corrode, can be are easily damaged and often have poor light output. Prices can vary from £100 for a quality aluminium type to up to £500 or more for a Marine grade 316 stainless steel type. The smaller diameter bollards will normally only accommodate candle size bulbs meaning their light output is restricted. If you install those with built in LED’s make sure they have a long warranty of 5 years or more and remember the warranty will only cover the replacement cost of the Bollard not the electricians cost should a fault develop. If you want low running costs and no failure worries opt for Bollards that use LED bulbs. Today high output “Corn” bulbs are

are also available for more decorative bollards. The latest LED bulbs are extremely efficient having an equivalent light output of up to 10 times their rated watts. Using lights lit by LED means that Photocell or PIR controls can be used meaning that the lights are never on in daylight. For many new builds this is a building control requirement. Some Bollard lights have built in PIR or Photocells; alternatively the controls can be mounted remotely. Remember an illuminated Bollard is not designed to withstand contact with a vehicle, some of the Stainless Steel types using 3mm thick metal will withstand a low speed collision but they are not designed to be a physical barrier. I would recommend that all bollards where possible are in ground (root) mounted. This makes them much stronger and there are no unsightly mounting plates, plus in the event of contact, they are easier to repair. Martin Bennett is the founder of Lumena Lights. www.lumenalights.com

SHOW SUCCESS
T
he British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) confirms record breaking show for the Association at Landscape 2016, receiving over 40 new membership enquiries, two successful seminar performances and its largest exhibit to-date. Fresh from exhibiting at this year's Landscape 2016, a dedicated trade event focused on products, services and design innovation for interior and exterior landscape projects, BALI is delighted to announce that it has had its best show in terms of the number of new membership enquiries, stand interactions and seminar participation, since the popular event began in 2011. BALI's Marketing and Communications Manager, Darren Taylor, and Sales Officer, Carly Button, were delighted with the result following an unusual temperature spike for mid-September in the South of England, with the sun beating down on a busy Battersea Park as crowds descended on the show and businesses lined up to make contact with the
Association during the two-day Autumn event. BALI, the leading Trade Association for the landscape industry in the UK, has since gone on to state that it was in fact a record breaking response from potential new members, eager to sign up to the rapidly expanding Association with a mixture of designers, contractors, suppliers and student graduates all looking to join membership to take advantage of the range of benefits on offer. BALI's Marketing and Communications Manager, Darren Taylor, told The Landscaper "We were extremely pleased to exhibit at Landscape 2016 and support over 30 existing BALI members who were present themselves inside and outside the main hall this year. We not only managed to greet a large amount of familiar faces at the show, but we also made an astonishing amount of new connections as well. By listening to feedback from our current members, we see this as an essential part of growing the Association and developing its products and services that ultimately fit around the members' needs and requirements. We look forward to returning to Battersea in 2017 where I am sure we will have an even better show, working alongside some of the most professional contractors, suppliers and designers in our industry."

Down in the woods today… APF 2016 attracted a record number of exhibitors and more than 20,000 visitors to its well-established show of manufacturers and suppliers of forestry, woodland, and arboricultural equipment While stormy September skies moved off to the south, and wind gusts created havoc with some displays, the atmosphere at APF 2016 was as positive as ever, buoyed by the record number (22,000+) visitors. Exhibitors came to the show (based at Ragley Estate, Alcester, Warwickshire), from as far afield as Japan and the USA.
The exhibition on 15 – 17 September was not just for the big companies; as Exhibition Secretary, Ian Millward remarked: ‘We decided to offer the option of a slightly smaller and cheaper stand this year and this has attracted a lot of new companies who have not exhibited with us before.’ Lincolnshire-based Agrigem is a specialist in agri products, including weed and moss killers, fertilisers, grass seeds and spraying equipment. lies beyond. At the nurseries Autumn Promotional Show in early October there was more emphasis on having full stocks of screening trees than ever before and the range of options available from their fabulous Italian supplier Vannucci Piante is greater than ever. Holly oak and red robin pleached trees remain very popular along with the classic hornbeam. Deciduous alternatives abound with the spring blossoms of ornamental pear and crab apple, and autumnal brilliance of the persian ironwood and field maple, all being fantastically displayed in this raised hedge format. Natural tree forms of evergreen japanese privet in its green or cream variegated format are no less popular not only for their beautiful screening potential,

but as they offer a low maintenance five metre tree that can be easily trimmed at anytime throughout its lifetime, they provide a “friendly” barrier between neighbours. Similarly the summer flowering portuguese laurel, the winter berrying Nellie Stevens holly, and the glorious winter flowering camellia offer functionality in a stunningly beautiful package. Of course three metre evergreen hedging options are all there around the nursery if desired through conifer, laurel and bamboo but variety is the spice of life that runs through the veins of this lovingly displayed specimen nursery. However a castle wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t contain things of beauty and elegance within its green walls so don’t be surprised to see stunning individual specimens worthy of stately homes on display when you visit. Don’t slip up! Timber decking is becoming an increasingly popular design trend for a wide variety of landscaping projects. One particular concern with timber decking is that conventional deck boards can become slippery in wet conditions, risking accidents and personal injury. By Charlotte Hughes From walkways through woods and parkland, to outdoor eating areas, viewing platforms and boardwalks, timber decking is being used to complement nature and create a sustainable aesthetic. No longer just a means of extending living space into the outdoors, landscape designers and architects are increasingly seeing the design potential of timber decking and it is now often used as a way of directing people’s attention, or linking areas of a site, for example in school or university campuses, holiday villages and regeneration projects. When choosing timber decking for landscaping projects, aside from aesthetics, there are some key considerations most importantly strength, durability and safety. One particular concern with timber decking is that conventional deck boards can become slippery in wet conditions, risking accidents and personal injury. It is therefore important to choose a product that meets, or preferably exceeds, the HSL’s anti-slip testing guidelines and this should be considered at the design stage for any

application where there is a timber deck with public access. Our JB Antislip Plus timber decking boards are specifically designed to provide a durable and effective external antislip surface to minimise any risk of slipping – even in adverse weather conditions. They are particularly suited to cycle paths, rural footpaths, wetlands and bridges, where the decking needs to blend in with the landscape. We also offer non-slip JB CitiDeck which is designed for use in urban environments and is ideal for creating accessible routes for prams and wheelchair users, or as a non trip surface for areas where there is a high volume of foot traffic. Both JB Antislip Plus and CitiDeck exceed the HSL guidelines and have been independently tested by the Health and Safety Executive, achieving a low potential for slip. All of Marley Eternit’s timber decking is manufactured from selected joinery grade European Redwood and is the first and only decking board in the UK to be CE marked. Cloud solution
Remote real time management of commercial and sports turf irrigation systems has become a practical reality with Rain Bird’s latest IQ-Cloud solution. For the contractor, it facilitates easier management as the installation can now be managed remotely by a computer connected to the internet, rather than just at the place of installation via a wall mounted controller or PC in the pump station. IQ-Cloud also ensures significant savings in water consumption thanks to its ability to schedule automatically irrigation programs based on internet based weather information as well as information from a weather station. With its multi-user capability, IQ-Cloud is well suited to use by both irrigation contractors with many sites to manage and by site managers, groundsmen or greenkeepers who can also easily adopt and use it. So whether it is to manage parks, hotels, leisure complexes, sports stadia or other amenities, IQ-Cloud represents a significant step forward by optimising irrigation schedules, saving water, identifying problems and allowing maintenance tasks to be carried out more quickly. Used in conjunction with Rain Bird ESP-LX series controllers, the addition of a communication cartridge enables employment of IQ-Cloud’s full suite of remote water management tools over the internet. Irrigation management and tracking at any time and from any location is possible
using a web enabled device including a desktop computer or, when mobile, a tablet or smartphone. Using a simple interface, users can set irrigation schedules and effectively manage them based on real time local weather condition data from a weather station or internet source. Using this information, irrigation will only be delivered when the landscape requires it, thereby making significant potential savings in water consumption. Irrigation times can also be suspended if required to meet any prevailing watering restrictions. Users know in real time which zones and irrigation systems are operating and can access information on flow rates and performance. With Rain Bird’s Flo-Watch, which constantly checks for low flow and excess flow conditions caused by broken lines or heads, IQ-Cloud can automatically shut down any problem area, continue to irrigate nonaffected areas or even close the entire system. Remote diagnosis of problems means they can be addressed more quickly. An on-site contractor can use a tablet or smartphone with IQ-Cloud to turn an irrigation system on and off when making repairs or carrying out maintenance - without having to go to the controller to make manual adjustments. As it can accommodate multiple users, IQ-Cloud can automatically create and share reports, saving time and

irrigation providing customers with information on irrigation times, total water usage and other significant data. Automated e-mail alerts and alarms can be set up to help manage potential problems and new zones, sites or systems can be easily added. Data and settings can be accessed around the clock and regular back up ensures settings and data are secure. Strict access controls ensure only authorised users can change irrigation schedules at any managed site. As part of the Rain Bird IQ Platform, that also includes IQEnterprise for private servers and the IQ-Desktop solution, the new IQ-Cloud offers new levels of versatility and flexibility with no initial charges or recurring annual fees to pay. The complete IQ-Platform represents the most powerful and cost-effective system available to provide complete real time management of any irrigation system. www.rainbird.eu
Irrigation system refit made easy As anyone who has gone through the process will know from start to finish choosing and installing an irrigation system can be a lengthy one. It can be complicated, fraught with issues and disruptive to the course and its members, but it doesn’t have to be. For Ramsdale Park, which has recently invested in a Toro Lynx control system with Flex 35 series sprinklers, it was a job made easy thanks to Toro UK distributor Reesink Turfcare and installer North Staffs Irrigation. John Evans, course manager at Ramsdale Park in Calverton on the outskirts of Nottingham, tells us about his experience. “We have two 18-hole courses here and needed a new irrigation system across both. The old one had PVC pipework, poor pressure, was prone to leaking and was generally taking us a lot of time to maintain and keep in reasonable condition to irrigate the courses correctly.” The process, which comprised of two phases, 130 new sprinklers, a new pump and all new pipework began in 2013 with the decision to use Toro, as John says: “Toro is one of the preferred suppliers for the Burhill Group, which Ramsdale Park is part of; we use Toro machinery and other clubs in the group also have Toro irrigation systems.” But despite the size and scale of the project and while it obviously couldn’t fail to impact on life at the course, peace of mind came from Reesink Turfcare and North Staffs Irrigation. “You can never completely remove the stress that
66
www.landscapermagazine.com
installing a new irrigation system brings to your course,” says John, “but working with the guys at Reesink and North Staffs Irrigation certainly made my job easier. They were very helpful and always on the end of the phone for advice. Choosing a system, installer and distributor are big decisions and I feel confident we made all the right ones. The system is reliable, efficient and easy to use and the process, which took two years, was as smooth as it could have been.” Plus, it’s making the club big savings. “It is 72 metres from the pumps to the highest point on the course and 27 of the 36 holes are at roughly the same height as the pumps so we have pressure regulators in key areas to ensure we have an even amount of pressure throughout the system, this means it’s a far more efficient way of watering than before. Proof of that comes from its first full season in 2015 when we achieved a 40 percent reduction in water usage.” John concludes by telling us about how much easier his job now is. “The operation of the system whether from an app on my phone or the computer saves so much time; I can turn the system on or off from home should I need to, in seconds. Previously I would’ve made a trip into work in the evening or at weekends, I can now control water application wherever I am. One Friday I set the irrigation to apply 1.5mm for the weekend, based on the weather forecast, unfortunately it was wrong! We had a scorching weekend so literally at the press of a few buttons I doubled the percentage of water put down. It is so convenient.”

Increased Productivity A leading south coast landscaping company finds that its tracked mini-dumper not only sets it apart from the competition - but substantially increases productivity. Dorset Design & Build (DBB) invested in a Hinowa HS1100 stand-on mini-dumper in 2015 and has seen significant efficiency benefits ever since. The self-loading machine is regularly used for the major garden and landscaping projects that are DBB’s speciality. Peter Jenkins, founder of DBB, said: “We have had the dumper for about a year now and it makes a huge difference to our productivity. “It is narrow enough to travel from the rear of a property to the front. This means it can take away spoil from a back garden, deposit it at the front, then come back with aggregate, sand or topsoil. So it is doubly useful as it very rarely travels empty. “For example, we were installing a soak-away recently and the Hinowa was extremely helpful, carrying out soil and bringing back in gravel on its return trip. The selfloader is excellent, as this saves on manual loading or having to use a second excavator. It’s also far more efficient to use the self-loader than it is to jump on a digger and load it.” The 850kg capacity HS1100 makes quick work of moving materials such as sand, gravel, earth, or shingle from one work site location to another. Less than 760mm wide, it is designed to pass through door or gateways, down the sides of properties, and to work in confined spaces. As a tracked machine it has very low ground pressure, minimising impact to lawns and paved areas, while also delivering excellent rough terrain capabilities. The hi-tip mast feature provides elevation of the dumper to enable tipping straight into skips or onto the flatbed of a van. DBB recently completed one of its biggest ever

contracts, a £300,000 complete garden overhaul at a property in Lilliput on the Dorset coast. Along with extensive groundworks, the hi-tech project involved erecting a curved frameless glass balustrade and a back lit, laser cut, cor-ten steel sculpture. Peter’s team also installed vertical planting, water harvesting and automated irrigation, a sound system, remote control RGB lighting, a boat house with log burner, and a £10,000 state of the art barbecue. “Access to the rear of the property was just 850mm wide. The only piece of kit we had that would fit was the Hinowa dumper; we had to hire in a crane to lift the rest over a wall. The fact that the Hinowa could travel easily back and forth was vital to the project; we would have really struggled without it.” Hinowa produces a wide array of options, so that customers can tailor the machine to their specific requirements. Manual start or electric start Honda petrol or Yanmar diesel engines, fixed or hydraulically-widening tracks, oscillating undercarriage for extra traction and ride comfort and a high-speed drive option with automatic transmission are all possible. DBB purchased the machine from Access Platform Sales (APS), the exclusive UK dealer for all Hinowa tracked compact plant machinery. It is part of IAPS Group, a leading UK distributor of powered access platforms and compact site equipment. www.iapsgroup.com

Sadolin Superdec user Gary Davies has gone on camera to talk about his passion for colour using the wood protection product. The video showcases a number of projects carried out in Devon, and includes an insight into how the colour choices were made at each site. Gary is a strong advocate of Sadolin Superdec and, since launching Lyme Bay Cabins five years ago, has specified its use to all his clients. He believes the superiority of the self-priming product in term of its application and finish, coupled with outstanding colour choice and longevity, make it the only product of choice. Gary said: “There’s a growing focus on really defining spaces outdoors and putting great personality into projects, and for this the choice of shades is really important. “It enables people to create their own unique buildings with great charm and great character. “Whether making an outdoor building really bold
hardscaper and beautiful, or just using a tone that blends into the surroundings, Sadolin Superdec has got fantastic colours within the range. “The options are absolutely endless and the quality of the product means the colour is going to last for the long-term.” Available in over 300 shades, Sadolin Superdec is renowned for its comprehensive colour palette, as well as its outstanding protective qualities, which together make it one of the most popular ranges within the Sadolin brand for specifers. Sadolin Superdec offers a highly durable opaque finish which erodes naturally by weathering, ensuring the coating remains flexible and resists cracking, peeling and flaking. This flexibility enables Sadolin Superdec to offer up to against the elements. The product is also self-priming and undercoating, thus reducing the need for an extra product on new wood. It also requires little preparation, and can be applied over previously decorated surfaces. www.sadolin.co.uk https://youtu.be/oXxPjdcqwDU

Don’t leave statues uncovered this winter Cliveden Conservation is reminding owners and managers of gardens, parks and properties that Winter Covers for sculptures and decorative stonework need to be ordered now before the cold and rainy weather arrives. Each cover is made to measure and comes with a three-layer system combining moisture permeable outer & inner fabric layers and an internal insulating fibre. Winter Covers are a simple yet cost effective solution which has been developed by Cliveden Conservation with involvement with the National Trust, as a way of protecting precious sculptures and stonework from fluctuations in temperature and rainwater. The covers, which are made in either a cylinder or box shape, have been designed for standing statues and urns but can also be adapted for most bench and rectangular shaped objects. The three-layered system of the cover consists of a waterproof and windproof outer layer, an inner layer made from a high-density weave fabric to prevent moisture absorption yet still allowing the object to ‘breathe’, and an internal insulating fibre to reduce temperature differentials. The shape of the cover also allows for air circulation to prevent the object from ‘sweating’. Drawstring fastenings and the lightness of the material make the cover easy and quick to position and remove. An optional open side seam fastened by Velcro is available for large or difficult to access statues. Winter Covers are durable and can be cleaned in a commercial washing machine before being stored away in their bag ready for the next winter season. Manufacture time for the covers takes between two to six weeks from the order date and submission of measurements. Cliveden Conservation offers an additional service for site visits to assess and measure sculptures and decorative stonework. www.clivedenconservation.com

Composite Wood fencing Principality Plastics now stocks Composite Wood Company decking, fencing and balustrades for trade customers in South Wales & Gloucester. “We’re always on the lookout for high-quality, economically-priced products. When we saw in the press that Composite Wood Company was exhibiting at FIT Show. We went to Telford purely to have a look at Composite Wood products,” explains Paul Davies Sales Director at Principality. “We were mainly interested in the balustrades but we
Newport Gwent Dragons’ training base A £6 million sports complex built on a former hospital site in Caerphilly opened for business with sports and perimeter fencing and handrails from Zaun. The former Ystrad Mynach Hospital site was transformed into a stunning sports hub that both professional and community teams use. Final landscaping work completed at the Ystrad Mynach Sports Complex, developed with support from Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Wales Rugby Union,
quickly realised the potential of the whole range. Composite Wood Company really looked out for us and the combination of their enthusiasm, customer service and the quality of the products made it an easy decision to stock Composite Wood.” Principality has committed to holding stock in its three branches in Cardiff, Swansea and Gloucester, and now has exclusive distribution in those key areas. www.compositewoodcompany.co.uk
Newport Gwent Dragons and Cardiff City FC. The complex is now the home training centre of the Dragons and boasts artificial and grass pitches for football and rugby, floodlights and stands, and a purpose built training base with weights room, indoor lineout training facilities and office space. Zaun supplied sports & security fencing contractors AlphaFence with over one kilometre of fencing and handrails. They installed over 600 metres of 5m high fencing, some with 1.5m sheet steel panels at the bottom and some with an additional 3m of netting on top, plus more than 400m of spectator railings.

horticulture truly underway we are receiving orders from existing and new customers on a daily basis.” Plantscape made history when it originally launched its solarpowered Christmas trees in 2007. They are the only product of their type on the market and last year they brightened up the winter nights as far afield as Oban in Scotland – where the sun rises for just seven hours a day - and East Grinstead in Sussex. Each tree – the tree itself is artificial - is covered in around 80 LED lights, which give a twinkling display powered by a battery. This is re-charged every day by a solar power panel mounted
Solar-powered Christmas trees soars A company which rents out the UK’s only solar-powered civic Christmas trees says it expects to run out of stock by the end of this month because of high demand. Plantscape says that due unprecedented levels of interest in the eco-friendly products, it expects to have none left within a matter of weeks, despite more than doubling its stock of the trees this year. Introduced to offer councils a way of decorating their streets for Christmas without incurring the cost of erecting wires and electricity - which can run into tens of thousands of pounds each year - the solar-powered trees come in two varieties. One design slots into a bracket mounted on the side of lampposts while the other can be hung from a standard hanging basket bracket, meaning that they can be installed almost anywhere. Last year Plantscape, which is better known for supplying floral features including hanging baskets and street planters and is based in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, ran out of both varieties of trees in the run up to Christmas and so invested thousands of pounds in more stock during the summer. However, it has only 400 left of its 2,000-strong stock of bracket-mounted trees - which are supplied in half units, one either side of a lamppost to form a whole “tree” – while just 300 of its hanging trees remain. Mark Stone, managing director of Plantscape, said: “This will be the tenth year that we have supplied our solarpowered trees and the tenth year running that we have had to considerably increase our stock to meet demand. “The interest in the trees has been incredible. We got our first order way back in January but now that autumn is well and

above the tree or, in the case of the hanging tree, positioned beneath the tree’s red planter. Last year Plantscape invested £50,000 to expand its premises to accommodate the ever-growing stock of Christmas trees, including the new hanging trees, which took two years to develop before they were introduced to the market. www.plantscapeuk.com

Increase from garden design sector
ONE OF the UK’s leading nurseries in Hereford has announced that it has seen a 45% increase in sales year-on-year this month (September, 2016) from the garden design sector. Wyevale Nurseries believes it has seen this growth in sales from the garden design market with more people moving away from DIY to ‘Do it for me’ (DIFM). Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, explained: “It’s a fantastic sales increase and we feel the trend for DIFM has seen a greater demand for the services of garden designers and landscapers. “In response to the trend, which we started to see in June last year, we launched a new Garden Design & Domestic Landscape sales department. “We appointed Adrian Hoare as Garden Design & Domestic Landscape Sales Manager. He has worked for us for 30 years in a multitude of sectors and his experience means he offers excellent service and advice to our customers. “He is able to give guidance to customers on plant selection, sourcing product and finding solutions to fill the most challenging landscape designs. “We have also made significant changes to our production with more specimen shrubs, a wider range of must have herbaceous, container hedging and tree ranges. This is backed up with stock from our partner nurseries across Europe to provide a full pallet. Giving designers and architects a ‘one-stop-shop’ to fulfil even the most complex of planting schemes.” www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk
Workplace Pension scheme ‘stage fright’ Garden centres and other garden sector businesses are amongst the 1.8 million businesses that need to establish and enrol their employees on to a Workplace Pension scheme by 2018, to avoid heavy fines, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). Some may need to act even faster. The FSB has identified what it’s calling ‘stage fright’ – a fear of finding out what the deadline (staging date) for your business to set up its Workplace Pension scheme is. Some of its members, UK-wide, have also admitted to being “scared to death” before watching an FSB advice webinar on this piece of legislation and say their nerves have settled down once they’ve realised they can meet their legal obligations by joining the hassle-free and quick-to-set-up FSB Workplace Pensions scheme. FSB Workplace Pensions is one of the exclusive range of vital business services including advice, financial expertise, support and a powerful voice in government that FSB membership offers to UK SMEs. The cost of membership starts at just 0.44 pence per day and a business employing 21-30 employees pays a maximum of just over £1 per day. For that, you can access a host of benefits on top of joining the FSB Workplace Pension Scheme, including FSB charge-free Business Banking and FSB Tax Investigation Protection. There are also vibrant networking events and an informative member magazine to guide you on a wide range of business issues. www.fsbpensionservices.co.uk

THE
LANDSCAPER
By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe It seems that my idea that Trump’s wall should be a green wall has been picked up by elements of social media. You never know, if he gets the job he might give me one. There is something vaguely interesting about the orange billionaire although I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. Whatever, Trump Tower would be a massive improvement on The Landscaper’s current office situation. We have all received an e mail advising us to bring in warm clothing as the boiler has broken down, and as the washrooms are being re-decorated we can take five minute breaks to walk down to Waitrose and use their facilities. Our editor has been full of beans recently. It’s not surprising. He told us all that he had to go on a very impor tant ‘assignment ‘ for eight days. The assignment however seems to have been to some swanky hotels and restaurants on the Cote de Azure. I have seen the bills and we have all noticed his expanded waistline. Another reason for his good humour is that he thoroughly enjoyed a day out with Etesia who were presenting some new products and celebrating 25 years in the UK. The Landscaper’s Sturdy Craft
Etesia divided the press into two teams and set them a number of tasks. These included mastering a Segway and constructing a raft. According to our leader he excelled at both. The Landscaper raft was a sturdy little craft which could have been ‘rowed across the channel’. The other team’s effor t was a complete shambles.
The other team - complete shambles
Chris Bassett – a dashing brave young media mogul was charged with taking the two vessels on their maiden voyages. The other team (which was made up with staff from other magazines) watched in horror as the hapless Bassett tried in vain to keep their raft from breaking apar t in the water- which apparently it did within four minutes. I don’t know about the veracity of this repor t because it did come from a man who told me at my interview and I quote “ Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story and don’t pay for anything”. If you are coming to IOG Saltex make a point visiting our stand and saying hello. tabitha@landscapermagazine.com
