New year The BTME Harrogate show was successful and very busy. Exhibitors were filling up their order books. Forecasting nowadays is an impossible task. One conclusion it seems we can all agree upon is that our currency for the foreseeable future will be unstable and will, at least for next two years, probably devalue. The price of everything that’s imported will rise. So it’s a prudent time to buy. The main danger for our industry will be the effect on household budgets which could become critical if interest rates rise. In this month’s issue, Ffion Llwyd-Jones talks to some of the industry’s leading lights to find out what they think is in store for us all. As for climate change, like so many other things, the world is going one way and Donald Trump is going the other. The president has claimed manmade global warming was a hoax invented by China to increase its trade surplus with the US. However, for most Americans, like most other people on the globe, daily life is increasingly impacted by extreme weather. In 2016, for the third year running, the world exceeded the previous record temperature. A remarkable 16 of the 17 hottest years on record have been this century, which scientists attribute to human activities. To meet the challenges of climatechange and rapid urban development, the Greening Grey Britain Garden, a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) feature at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show showcases how and why plants, nature and gardens have never been needed more in our towns and cities. Gardens and plants are no longer an optional and decorative ‘nice-tohave’, they’re essential. With pollution

levels dangerously high in cities like London, Glasgow and Southampton, and flash-flooding devastating areas of the country last year, we need to all embrace the fact that plants help mitigate against some of the biggest environmental threats facing us today. Set within an urban context of high-rise and apartment blocks, the RHS Greening Grey Britain garden focuses on practical and creative solutions for where space is at a premium, including balconies, and other spaces on and around the buildings themselves. Horticulture contributes £9 billion to the UK economy every year, and employs around 300,000 people across a variety of disciplines. However, 70% of businesses say that they struggle to find the skilled workers they require and 83% put this down to the poor perception of horticulture in schools and colleges. We’re known as a nation of beautiful gardens but with the lack of incoming skills to maintain BTME these, this may not be the case REPORT soon with an increasingly ageing 2017 PREDICTIONS workforce and a skills shortage aggravated by Brexit. Our Front cover this month is a montage of images from this year’s BALI awards winner Willerby Landscapes - as a reader of our digital magazine you can see pictures of all the final winners in a special 17 page supplement - see page 30.

National Success

Chester based landscaping firm, Walker Landscape & Design, are through to the National Awards for the Marshalls Register Awards 2016/17 after winning the regional heat this week. Marshalls Register, recently awarded the ‘Best Use of Ethically Sourced Fairstone’ to the local landscapers, at their 2016/2017 awards held in Mold. The ceremony honoured the achievements of the best accredited installers from their register which provides homeowners with access to trusted landscapers. The National awards will be held in London in June. The prestigious award credited the use of ethically sourced Fairstone during the redesign at a property in Clutton, Cheshire and promotes the use of ethically sourced products within the industry. Ben Walker, owner of Walker Landscape & Design and former pupil at the Chester Catholic High school and Reece Heath Collage, set up the landscape and maintenance business after years of experience working in the industry. Beginning his career at Oakley Garden Centre and building his landscaping portfolio, the business now employs a team of five and has set up an apprenticeship scheme to develop budding gardeners. Ben commented; “We’re so proud to have won this award after being shortlisted from hundreds of entries, many from much larger businesses. With every job that we do, we ethically source our products and I hope to set an example in the industry. “It was always my dream to become a landscaper, and through my apprenticeship scheme, I’ve been able to develop some real local talent, so I’m proud that our efforts now mean we’re an award winning team. What a start to the year.” www.walkerlandscapeanddesign.com

Paving the Way The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) Stone Seminar – Paving the Way, sponsored by London Stone, this week brought together landscapers, designers and suppliers to discuss and debate the methods and issues involved in laying stone. Held at Whittlebury Hall in Northamptonshire the 80 strong audience heard from a number of experts and industry practitioners about all aspects of working with stone from the importance of design and sub-bases to sealing and sourcing. Laying stone used to be a relatively straightforward process when there were just a relatively small number of traditional stone types available, it is very different now. Now with such a plethora of stone on the market from across the world, particularly from India and China, it is a much more complex picture with associated technical issues. Speakers through the day looked at some of the intricacies involved in selecting and laying stone – it is clear that there is no one size fits all approach and all jobs need to be assessed according to site conditions such as sub-soil and soil type and along with the aspect of the garden. Leading consultant Barry Hunt, Director of IBIS Limited, the UK’s first consultancy specialising only in building materials problems, provided a fascinating talk about what to do when things go wrong. Barry emphasised the point that stone is the innocent party and failure is normally the result of poor preparation or understanding leading to the works not being fit for purpose. Barry was inundated with questions imparting his valuable knowledge to the audience. There was also much debate about porcelain - ‘the new kid on the block’ which despite its excellent qualities is still to stand the test of time. APL Chairman, Ken White from Frosts Landscape Construction, who opened and closed the seminar, comments, “Whilst it is evident that there is no one size fits all approach to working with stone there are areas of commonality. The day provided a great forum for

discussion, debate, and sharing of information, the industry is better integrated and informed.”

Aeration on the golf course

Terrain Aeration has been receiving a marked increase in the number of golf courses requesting their specialist soil compaction and aeration service. Normal aeration on fairways such as Verti-draining is a fast, short term solution but for many courses recent weather patterns have resulted in the need for much deeper aeration than the usual six to eight inches vertical draining. Such has been the experience at over fifty golf clubs both private and municipal, including Newport Golf Club, Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club, Portsmouth City Council and Sherwood Forest to name but a few. Sittingbourne and Milton Regis Golf Club was the first club to receive the Terrain Aeration treatment and it wasn’t until fifteen years later they again had four greens treated for a little waterlogging. Good testament to the fact the system of deep penetration aeration works in relieving compaction, panning and waterlogging without any disruption. Terrain Aeration offers a deep drill service. Used principally on golf greens and tees, the Terralift machinery drills 16mm diameter, 250mm deep holes on a grid pattern, removing the spoil and facilitating a degree of soil replacement The deep drill treatment improves gaseous exchange and drainage in the top 250mm of the soil beneath the turf, improving turf rooting firmness, rooting depth and durability. The Terralift machinery used by Terrain Aeration is purposebuilt to ensure excellent results without surface disruption or any loss of availability for play. This specialist treatment improves drainage, cures anaerobic conditions and results in improved firmness and rapid drying, ensuring the surface is always available for use. These improvements typically last between ten and 12 years, making the treatment costeffective, longlasting and completely mess-free. 01449 673783 www.terrainaeration.com

Glyphosate – Still weed control key Amenity contractors can continue to offer their clients the best possible weed control service with glyphosate in 2017, confident that they are acting responsibly and within the law, says Monsanto. Since the extension of registration of glyphosate was agreed in the summer, the active ingredient has received significant media attention. But little has actually changed, explains Monsanto’s Technology Development and Stewardship Manager Manda Sansom. The EU Commission Implementing Regulation on glyphosate issued on 1st August 2016 stated: Member States must pay particular attention to the risks from the use in specified areas referred to in Article 12 (a) of Directive 2009/128/EC (The Sustainable Use Directive or SUD). Specified areas in UK legislation include those used by the general public, which has led some sources to suggest that glyphosate should not be used in amenity applications such as spraying in parks or around sports facilities. news However, Ms Sansom says that this is not the case: “Here in the UK, the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012 have already been rigorously implemented and require pesticide use to be kept ‘as low as reasonably practicable’.”

Also of relevance to the amenity sector, the Regulation also required Member States to ensure glyphosate products do not contain tallowamine surfactants, which will result in the phasing out of all glyphosate products containing tallowamine. However Monsanto amenity Roundup products have been tallowamine-free since 2014.

The glyphosate registration renewal process should be concluded by the end of the 2017, adds Monsanto Technical Development Manager Barrie Hunt. “The process is presently focused on the assessment of glyphosate by the European Chemical Agency. Once this is completed, probably sometime next summer, the formal regulatory process can restart with the glyphosate renewal being decided by the end of the year. In the meantime Roundup availability and use continues.” Amenity contractors say that it is business as usual Complete Weed Control’s Alan Abel comments: “We have had many discussions with our clients about glyphosate, but they and we understand that we cannot do without it.” Mr Abel points out that contractors and amenity sprayer operators using glyphosate should only do so in accordance with SUD and the chemical manufacturer’s label recommendations. He adds that local authority clients are also revising their spray schedules to minimise chemical use: “Local authority cutbacks meant that some councils were reducing the number of sprays, but this actually necessitated the use of higher chemical doses to control the additional weed

By making three applications a year rather than two it is possible to reduce the overall chemical volumes needed.” Amenity Forum chairman John Moverley suggests that contractors should demonstrate to the public and clients their commitment to best practice by being a member of the Amenity Assured Scheme. “I would also urge professionals to demonstrate that they are operating to Amenity Assured standards, and in compliance with the law, with practices including sprayer testing, recognised certification for all pesticide operators and legal responsibility on any person purchasing pesticides to ensure they are used by certificated operators.” “The current review processes are extremely rigorous and testing and those pesticides currently available are constantly monitored and properly reviewed.”

incredible; their unique shaft drive makes them so much more destructive. The brushcutter videos on YouTube demonstrate their staggering capabilities.” The shaft drive means that 100% of the power from the industrial Subaru engines is transferred to the cutting blades. This enables them to cut longer and taller vegetation and branches up to 36mm. In contrast, belt driven designs can experience a reduction of 30% of their power before reaching the blades and they tend to have problems with belts slipping and snapping. The Canycom “Samurai” range of ride-on brushcutters are hand built using steel forged in their own factories, following centuries-old processes. Notably, the quick release cutting blades are manufactured using the same processes as those of a Samurai sword (which the family made for generations before brushcutters) These very low centre of gravity four-wheel drive machines have a stability angle of 30 degrees which makes them extremely versatile, powerful machines. An additional feature is the Hydro + Mechanical Drive system, which has all the benefits of an automatic transmission with the power of a mechanical drive. The existing waterproofing membrane had failed and there were also issues with the pipework feeding the cascade system. As a result, specialist contractor, Water Gems (Alba) Ltd was contracted to strip out the existing membrane, repair the pipework and replace the failed lining with Firestone’s PondGard EPDM membrane, before re-filling the pools and carrying out landscaping works.

Successful show Independent audit confirmed that the combined attendance at SALTEX over the two day exhibition totalled 8,754. With 292 exhibitors (28 more than 2015), increased show features, an enhanced education programme and extended floor space which saw three exhibition halls packed with an overwhelming number of UK and international visitors - it was clear to see that SALTEX is growing. SALTEX 2016 also encouraged serious business leads and significant sales, with exhibitors reporting that visitors were high-quality buyers with serious intent. Gabriella Fox - sports sales and marketing coordinator for Harrod UK reported a successful show: “During SALTEX we obtained a number of strong business leads and maintained many relationships with customers, we were delighted with the amount of repeat and new visitors! We will definitely be returning to SALTEX in 2017 as we saw a 20% increase in leads this year.” Having previously opted to exhibit bi-annually at SALTEX, Reesink Turfcare has broken this trend by already

committing to SALTEX 2017, with Holly Jones, marketing manager, commenting: “We were impressed with SALTEX 2016! Many of our customers visited our stand along with plenty of new ones.” Richard Fry, marketing director for Rigby Taylor, remarked on a successful event: “The 2016 SALTEX was the best ever, both in terms of the number of visitors to the Rigby Taylor stand and the quality. For us as a company, the move to the NEC has encouraged visitors to the exhibition from a wider geographical area and has brought in new, additional customers who view the location as a place to do business. Bring on 2017!” SALTEX’s educational programme – Learning LIVE – was bigger and better than ever before as visitors took the opportunity to listen to and discuss topical issues, learn from the industry’s leading experts and engage with high profile radio and TV personalities from Sky Sports, talkSPORT and the BBC such as Mark Saggers, Darren Gough, Barrie McDermott and Mark Clemmit. Lee Metcalfe, head groundsman at the Manchester City Football Academy, was particularly upbeat with the Learning LIVE seminars: “We all found that the seminars were very good and took something out of each one we attended. Education is the way forward and when free education is put on to help people better themselves, then I believe you would be silly not to attend and learn. We all really enjoyed

the event and are looking forward to next year already.” New SALTEX continues to go from strength to strength and after the second year at the NEC the SALTEX team are delighted with both visitor and exhibitor reaction - firmly establishing this new look exhibition and the associated IOG industry awards as the key profile raising events in the calendar. IOG CEO Geoff Webb was delighted with the success of SALTEX 2016 and signalled the institute’s ambitions to continue to grow the show: “We are really pleased with the reaction to SALTEX 2016 - both days of the show were busy, and with the IOG Awards as well, we feel we have consolidated the exhibition at its new home at the NEC. With Learning Live, the SALTEX College Cup, Soil & Pathology Live all adding to the mix, we are already working on new features for 2017. “Overwhelmingly our feedback from both visitor and exhibitor was one of satisfaction and confidence in SALTEX. Set against a backdrop of economic and political uncertainty we are determined that SALTEX listens, learn from each year and evolves. We always look at what worked well and where there is room for improvement and that work has already started in preparation for SALTEX 2017.” SALTEX 2017 will be held at the NEC, Birmingham on 1 and 2 November 2017. www.iogsaltex.com

STRI Group has launched its new Chinese company with partners Shanghai KeHua Sports Promotional Co. and Beijing iRENA Group. The inauguration of Shanghai Tizan Turf Science Co. Ltd, took place at the prestigious Century Park football facility in Shanghai. The event, hosted by Joanna Roper, the Director General of Department for International Trade, and Mr Xiaohua Lin, Vice President of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), was attended by The English Premier League, The FA along with several Chinese football clubs and government officials. The new company has multiple high-end projects already underway. It is servicing the industry with a design, build, supply and operate model to provide elite football pitches and associated equipment for stadia and training facilities. As a result, it will bring cutting edge products, services and expertise to the Chinese football industry. Current developments include the construction of a world class, multi-pitch training centre in Kunming in addition to a significant stadium and coaching facility in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Heavyweight projects in Shanghai, Beijing and Nanning are also about to commence. In addition, the business is working closely with the CFA to improve playing surfaces for the Chinese national football team, as they bid to make a big impact on international tournaments. One of the many key strategic relationships the company has already formed. Welcoming the new business Mr Lin said: “The CFA support this new business and will welcome the wealth of international expertise which STRI Group brings to the Chinese football industry. We will actively encourage our venues to improve their facilities utilising the products and services they provide.

Mark Godfrey, STRI Group CEO, said: “Alongside our highly successful businesses in Qatar and Australia, this company is part of our long-term commitment to the Asia-Pacific region. It will greatly assist the Chinese national ambitions for further development in football.” www.strigroup.com

Cricket Seminar Date Dennis and SISIS have announced that they will be holding their popular cricket seminar on February 16 at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Groundsmen from all levels of cricket will be able to refresh their education on a variety of topics including spinning pitches, frustrations of a cricket groundsman, spring maintenance on a budget and pre-season in a marquee. The day will conclude with a Q&A session including 5 county head groundsmen. The impressive line-up of speakers includes Chris Wood of the ECB, Sean Williams – head groundsman at Gloucester and former head groundsman at East Molesey Cricket Club Barry Glynn. A further announcement of the full list of speakers will be announced closer to the event, so keep an eye on the Dennis and SISIS social media channels as they are announced. Dennis and SISIS have been joined by key partners within the groundscare industry including Boughton Loam, CricketWorld.com, Limagrain, Poweroll, Stuart Canvas and local dealer Lister Wilder, ensuring that this event is not to be missed for anyone responsible for cricket pitch maintenance. Commenting on the forthcoming seminar, Durham County Cricket Club head groundsman Vic Demain said: “Having been involved with the Dennis and SISIS cricket groundsman seminars since their launch in 2011, it has been fascinating to see the growth of the events, together with the interest shown by the industry. “The beauty of many of these events is being able to share time with likeminded folk, making new contacts and discovering that no matter what level one works at, we all have the same passion. There is no magic formula for making cricket pitches, one has to follow long held guidelines, but also be prepared to trial different methods to find what suits each individual ground. The interaction between presenters and delegates at these events will give the audience a desire to get back onto their grounds.”

Edging beds and borders Following a feature in The Landscaper concerning the declining standard of public parks and open spaces maintenance, GroundsCare Products have come up with an innovative idea. “The look of parks can be drastically improved by edging the beds and borders. Groundscare’s Paul Errington explains “ As a result of budget cuts it has been all-but abandoned. No doubt, it is seen as a time-consuming, labour-intensive job but can actually be very quick provided you have the right machine. “Over the last few years, I have heard more than one facilities management company say that it’s actually still in their brief, but the budget doesn’t allow time for it, so everyone turns a blind eye. Consequently, the edges look scruffy and in many cases the soil has completely filled the gullies so that there really isn’t an edge at all. In such situations a small, lightweight edging machine isn’t the best tool for the job. They are good at maintaining established edges/gullies, but you need a much heavier machine in order to cut a new edge.” In order to start getting edging back on the agenda, GroundsCare Products are prepared to offer the loan of

24

www.landscapermagazine.com

a TurfTeq Edger that can quickly re-establish edges and gullies. It will be made available, for a limited time, to Local Authorities with responsibility for maintaining at least one public park. The offer is made subject to certain conditions, the main ones of which are: • Maximum period of loan is two full working days. Addition time must be paid for at our standard rental rates. • We will deliver the machine free of charge to an address within 50 miles of RG26 3PY. Additional mileage at £1/mile for the round trip. • Each hirer will be expected to make a nominal £25 contribution to blade wear. • User needs to insure the machine against loss and damage for the duration of the loan (and subsequent hire if appropriate). • Machine will be delivered with a full tank of fuel and needs to be returned with a full tank. • The offer is available during the period January thru April 2017. Interested parties should contact GroundsCare Products on Tel: 0118 981 1313 or email turfteq@groundscare-products. co.uk, www.groundscare-products.co.uk/pe.htm

Electric horsepower at The Helix Falkirk Community Trust manages some of the most attractive parks in central Scotland, one of which is The Helix with its landmark horse sculptures, the Kelpies. Borne from an idea in 2003 to build an ecopark as part of the Falkirk Greenscape Initiative, transforming 350 hectares of land between Falkirk and Grangemouth, The Helix today connects sixteen local communities through extensive path networks. Fitting ideally with the ethos of an outdoor recreational ecopark, one of the service vehicles chosen by the Falkirk Council Fleet Services is a Polaris EV, the first true 4 x 4 electric UTV, which was supplied by local authorised Polaris dealer Agricar. “Early on in the development of The Helix the design incorporated eco-friendly specifications such as LED lighting,” says Parks Supervisor Lucy Gillie, “and the whole aim is to ensure as a modern park we maximise our recycling. We do our own composting, any tree felling is sold on for firewood and the recycle bins are clearly labelled for visitors.” The Polaris EV is used by the park’s cleaners, park attendants and as a general runaround during the summer, becoming an adaptable 4x4 off-roader in the winter months, when it’s working in the woodlands and off the normal paths. “A million people passed through The Helix in the first year and it remains extremely popular today,” adds Lucy “and for us the Polaris EV is the vehicle of choice. Being electric it makes no noise and fits in well with the look and feel of what is a very

aesthetic park.” Symbolic of the sustainably enduring qualities the Helix stands for are the statuesque Kelpies, the Andy Scott sculptures of mythical water horses that reflect the heavy horses of industry and economy of the area, pulling wagons, ploughs, barges and coal ships that shaped its structural layout. As an analogy, today’s workhorse in the park, the Polaris EV is the epitome of clean, quiet and efficient power with unmatched range, quick acceleration and smooth offroad performance. And of course it’s driven by a strong 48V AC-induction electric motor that offers 30 horse power. Polaris Britain: 0800 915 6720 / www.polaris-britain.com

lighting

Water: The Enemy Within Why do so many older garden lighting systems no longer work. Martin Bennett explains.

The simple answer is usually “water ingress”. Until recently most garden lights used halogen bulbs rated at 30 watts or more. These generate a lot of heat and if the fixture is not 100% airtight then a lot of condensation can occur which can easily trip mains voltage systems. These days LED bulbs are far more efficient with a 3 watt bulb typically generating as much light as a 25 watt Halogen with much less heat. Even so with mains systems only a small amount of moisture in a fitting will cause the power to trip out. The answer is to use 12v systems. Trips occur when electricity is leaked to earth. The power or pressure of 240 volt mains is 20 times that of 12v so it is obvious that the chances of a trip-out on 12v systems is negligible. Lumena Lights have tested 12v MR16 bulb holders in very wet conditions and still they did not trip out. In fact 99% of all problems are on mains systems. Electricians appear to favour them perhaps because they consider 12v to be more of a DIY method or maybe they remember the large and expensive transformers that are required when using Halogen bulbs. For example a 200 watt transformer would be required to power six Spike lights using 30 watt halogen whereas if LED bulbs

are used then a 20 watt transformer would be adequate. Other problems occur mainly in “in ground” or decking lights where there is a lot of surface water or jet washers are used. Most of these lights are rated at IP65 which is not enough to prevent some water ingress in these conditions. Change to a 12v light and you will not be calling out the electrician. Martin Bennett is the founder of Lumena Lights. www.lumenalights.com

Simply the best BALI Registered Contractor Willerby Landscapes took the 40th BALI National Landscape Awards Grand Award for an unprecedented sixth time. This incredible achievement recognised the work carried out by the leading landscape contractor on the regeneration of King’s Cross, London. Willerby Landscapes, who are based in Kent, were awarded the Grand Award - BALI’s highest accolade - at this year’s ceremony for their landscaping of the King’s Cross, an area to the north of King’s Cross station in London that has seen enormous investment to create a vibrant new city quarter. This mixed use development, which has sensitively incorporated some of the area’s historical industrial architecture, has attracted some of the world’s leading companies who have chosen to locate their headquarters there and the stunning landscaping has been instrumental in helping to market the area. Willerby Landscaping have once again displayed their mastery of the range of landscaping disciplines across this scheme, which is an exemplar for the landscape industry. Commenting on the company’s record achievement, chair of the adjudication panel Greg Allen said: “This is a wonderful scheme, expertly executed by Willerby Landscapes. The company is, without doubt, the country’s leading landscape contractor with an enviable reputation for excellence and attention to detail, which has been demonstrated yet again at King’s Cross. The landscaping works were complex and challenging and it is apparent that the huge success of the scheme is down to Willerby’s emotional as well as operational investment to ensure it is the best that it could possibly be. As an example of public realm landscaping it is outstanding and a worthy winner of what is Willerby’s sixth BALI Grand Award. On behalf of the BALI Awards judges I offer the company, and in particular John Melmoe who has led it for 33 years, my very sincere congratulations and admiration on their achievement.”

2017 predictions

Growth and Challenge in 2017 Ffion Llwyd-Jones asks key industry figures for their thoughts on new challenges, fresh opportunities, and innovative solutions for the coming year KEY DRIVERS FOR 2017 ‘It’s interesting out there at the moment,’ says Ken White, Managing Director of Frosts Landscape Construction, emphasising that he is commenting on the industry as a whole. ‘There’ll need to be a good level of operating efficiency, flexibility and adaptability, so we can change with the market without stalling operations.’ He adds that while there was some growth in projects and opportunities at the end of 2016, the challenge now concerns opportunity versus risk: ‘For example, the commercial sector is asked to price project up to 24 months into the future… given inflationary pressures and price rises, that makes things very difficult as assumptions made now might not match in two years time. Pricing worked so far in advance can be a headache. We’re seeing devaluation in the pound – and price increases up to 20% – and you can’t afford not to pass some of those on.’ Les Malin, Operations Director at Etesia UK, concurs that uncertainty may make some areas of business more cautious. He adds: ‘The eventual outcome of Brexit is still to be determined. While that is happening, the market place is trying to second-guess future changes to business. Putting less focus on what may or may not be in the future, and more focus on what we can achieve today as a nation, would be more constructive.’ It is that concept of ‘expectation versus reality’ that also concerns Jim Croxton, Chief Executive Officer at Bigga. Speaking from a golf perspective, he comments that golfers have such high expectations that there’s a gap between what they expect and what is realistic. ‘For example, they expect to play golf on immaculate greens in winter,’ he says. ‘That expectation of what the golfer expects for the fee is a gap, and the clubs have to understand how to deploy resources and what’s achievable. For a £15 - £20 green fee nowadays you get a golf course in the kind of immaculate condition that you’d have played at a top-50 golf club 20 years ago.’

48

www.landscapermagazine.com

Martin Wasley, Sales and Technical Manager, Cub Cadet, also mentions the importance of budgeting and keeping costs, such as labour and fuel, to a minimum. ‘Everyone is looking to increase productivity with better machinery, but also have an expectation of getting the job done quicker,’ he says. ‘There’s a need for products that will save time, be easy to operate, and work in various areas.’

It’s interesting out there at the moment ‘As costs go up, passing those on to the public could be quite difficult,’ comments Ken White. ‘Labour cost increases also pushes all wages up, and for people tied in to three-and five-year grounds maintenance contracts with no indices to allow change for inflation, that will squeeze margins further.’ He adds that as local authorities suffer greater austerity pressures, there will be more demand for annual cuts, which will impact services and the end-user. Martin Wasley notes that some local authorities are taking back work and doing it themselves. ‘Schools are taking budgets back in house,’ he adds. ‘If they can find the right machine at right price, it saves on costs. And the grounds can be done as required, which may at different times done than by an outside contractor’s regular schedule.’ ‘Commitment to service and running a tight ship will be key drivers,’ says Pro-Motion’s Lynn Hunter. ‘We’re witnessing shrinking competition on both a local and national level; it’ll be survival of the fittest. And the importance of relationship building will heighten in 2017.’ ‘We’re seeing major changes within the dealer networks of many large companies, leading to changes in the distribution and service network for many smaller companies,‘ comments Les Malin. ‘At the same time it could lead to more opportunities.’

2017 predictions

BALI sees some opportunities for garden designers and landscapers through ‘consumers’ increasing use of unsecured debt to fund discretionary spending.’ Adding: ‘Continued austerity measures at government level will result in reduced local authority spending on green space, making competition keener, potentially favouring onestop-shop service providers over smaller contractors. And HS2 and public infrastructure projects, including housing schemes such as Thamesmead and Garden Cities, are likely to favour bigger contractors.’ Investment in the market is also seen as ‘an overwhelming driver’ by Green-Tech’s chairman, Richard Kay. ‘That investment will include new build, industrial estates and houses,’ he adds. ‘And funding will be critical, with infrastructure investment (such as HS2 and the related projects) a key driver.’ In the golfing industry, governance is a key driver, says Jim Croxton. He explains that while facilities run by members have been slow to modernise governance, the business-owned establishments are generally surviving. ‘They’re making the big decisions, such as asking how it can be run as a profit, and if so, then let’s do it, or do we have to turn some of the land back to agriculture or sell for

50

www.landscapermagazine.com

housing? A lot of golf clubs have sold off parcels of land or diversified to make a facility profitable.’ Overall, Ken White feels optimistic for the next 12 to 18 months, although aware of ‘potentially challenging times.’ He adds: ‘There is Government money in infrastructure projects and the residential market is still growing, although perhaps not so much in office construction in London. Flexibility is required, with the ability to move to where the projects are. There are opportunities to be had in all markets, we’re just being forced to become leaner.’ KEY CHALLENGES FOR 2017 ‘Currency exchange rate and fluctuations, especially the Euro and the US dollar, will be key challenges,’ comments Richard Kay. ‘We need to see stability after months of trying to decide what is fiction or fact about Brexit. The cost of imports is already up. Inflation will have a negative impact on staffing, cost of living; there will be pressure on the industry to pay more. And there will be more activity in Mergers & Acquisitions.’ The lower value of sterling, and its affect on the cost of imported plant materials and other products is also a concern for BALI: ‘Profitability will be an area of challenge,

2017 predictions

with the impact on business viability from severely reduced margins in some markets.’ Martin Wasley confirms the company has implemented a six to seven percent price increase since August 2106. ‘Most of our product comes from the USA or Europe,’ he adds. ‘It’s all based on (very fluid) exchange rates – so if they change, there may be a second round of increases. It’s about looking at the price next time you have to buy, and hoping for some stability.’ And as Jim Croxton comments: “Customers who see golf on a balance sheet as a cost, and want to reduce it as cheaply as possible – such as parks and public places run buy public authorities – means we can’t always provide the service at price being offered.’ Increasing labour costs also concern Lynn Hunter. As she says: ‘Across the sector, all elements of the supply chain are in the same boat – from turf growers to nurseries and contractors. While the uncertainty of the marketplace will challenge us overall, we place great emphasis on the sustainability of a trained workforce and the recruitment of hard-working apprentices with potential for supervisory and management development. Recruiting apprentices is an ongoing challenge for us as the outdoor, hard-working landscape industry struggles to compete with other industries for young people’s career paths.’ BALI also sees skills shortages as an area of challenge, urging ‘promotion of landscaping as a profession. A further challenge is the impact, particularly on local authority grounds maintenance contractors, of the National Living Wage, Workplace Pensions and Apprenticeship Levy contributions.’ The skills gap is a challenge, agrees Richard Kay. ‘We need to get the message out about opportunities in the industry.’ ‘Labour and skills shortages are becoming even more of an issue,’ adds Ken White. ‘It’s difficult to find good people. However, there are some great initiatives to attract youngsters, and the new apprenticeship levy will help drive the scheme forward. We need to hire people for aptitude, and then train them. And horticulture is coming in through early-years schools, with children growing plants and learning about the environment. Our industry is largely an industry of entrepreneurs, and it’s very rewarding – so we need to get that message out. It is challenging, but there are great opportunities.’ ‘Regulatory pressure is also a challenge,’ comments Jim Croxton. ‘Members have to adapt, and go back to traditional methods to manage pests, worms, leather

jackets, and turf diseases. And there’s the further impact of water regulations – for example, if what’s applied to turf affects water courses it can’t be used.’ He adds that another challenge is that many facilities have a short-term approach to their club, rather than making a long-term investment and practicing sustainable greenskeeping, such as using finer grasses, less chemicals, less water. ‘There’s a journey from where we are today to a sustainable golf course that takes from two to five years, and very few facilities seem prepared to go on that journey rather than risk losing a player to the club down the road tomorrow. That’s not going to change in the short term. It’s a major leap to think 10 years in advance when the industry has been declining – but the best facilities are doing that and will be successful because of it.’

If the landscape industry can’t drive awareness forward, who can? ‘The threat for longer term EU-funding of large construction projects looms over us,’ adds Lynn Hunter. ‘Thankfully, with short- to medium-term commitments underway in business parks and other commercial projects, the mid-term still looks positive. Continuous improvement remains both a challenge and an opportunity for us.’ As Ken White says: ‘Many of us get into this business because we love plants and hard landscaping, or building things – the challenge is in the need to hone and improve business skills. On the APL side [Ken is the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) chairman], we’re looking to improve business skills and create a stronger business. That includes rolling out a series of educational programmes to small business owners, helping them understand the critical importance of numbers, cash flow and a robust plan. After all, without a plan, there are only hopes and dreams.’ BENEFICIAL TECHNOLOGY AND PROJECTS ‘If the landscape industry, where the creation of environmentally-sustainable landscapes is paramount, can’t drive awareness forward, who can?’ asks Lynn Hunter. ‘We constantly push and promote the importance of the soft landscaping element in our projects. And we work closely with suppliers and clients, focusing on the positive developments we all make to the environment and the

future of sustainable landscaping across the UK.’ Sustainability is an increasingly key part of golf, comments Jim Croxton. ‘Our members are ecologically minded people, especially in the green-keeping teams,’ he adds. ‘Many clubs have multiple environmental initiatives, such as beehives, bird boxes, composting, and bug hotels. They are attractive to the public and efficient. And the Golf Environment Organization (GEO) will eventually become part of the agenda at most golf clubs.’ GEO is an international non-profit, ‘dedicated entirely to providing a credible and accessible system of sustainability standards, support programmes, recognition, and capacity building for the golf industry.’ ‘Having a quality product will drive awareness,’ comments Richard Kay. ‘Other forward-looking initiatives will include integrating marketing and sales, online and offline presence, trade shows, mobile-friendly websites, and an active social media platform.’ BALI sees myriad ways to drive increased awareness of new technology and projects, including trade

exhibitions and conferences, demonstration events, industry product/supplier presentations, case studies, industry awards, and inclusion in study programmes/ apprenticeship training. However, technology doesn’t come without cost, as Jim Croxton comments. ‘A piece of equipment not invented 10 years ago is now essential, and it may cost £20,000 and has a shelf-life of only five years. That’s an added annual cost that simply didn’t exist previously. While better weather knowledge, and better understanding of moisture content might lead to reduced water usage and fertiliser, the technology still costs, and uses man hours. In addition, robotics are being used to mow driving ranges, or used on practice areas near the clubhouse, because they’re cost effective, and/or quiet. Automation will have an impact over time.’ ‘Management will need to take greater responsibility for business risk and continuity,’ remarks Ken White. ‘ The ISO [Occupational Health and Safety Management Standard, set to replace OHSAS 18001 in December 2017] will force

2017 predictions

management to look at how business is set up and the risk. It can only be a good thing.’ Martin Wasley also sees potential in new fuels, such as in electric- and battery-powered tools. ‘Everyone has to be aware of operators and the environment they work in, with vibration, noise, pollution,‘ he says. “There is potential for a cleaner burn with petrol rather than diesel and, out of the USA it can be at a cheaper purchase price than diesel.’ He comments that professional lithium-powered mowers are expensive, but offer opportunities. The growth in battery-powered tools, including lithium is being powered by environmental impact reasons as well as Health & Safety concerns for employees, comments Les Malin. ‘Employers know battery tools can be lower in vibration levels and emissions, and the more powerful batteries and improved technology means such tools are a viable alternative to petrol equivalents – not the case ten years ago, ‘ he adds. ‘Since introducing Pellenc [batterypowered tools] in 2010, we have seen dramatic changes in how dealers and end-users have accept this type of product; there is demand to extend this market to bigger and larger capacity machines.’

noise for noise’s sake.’ ‘Social media is important enough to us that we’re investing in it this year,’ comments Jim Croxton. ‘We’ve grown Facebook organically so far, although that may change in the next year or so, where we may use it in a more formal manner for education, with live sessions, and streaming. Our closed Facebook group is incredibly busy, with thousands of people sharing information. Twitter is more beneficial for the business than for members: it’s more about sharing information to the industry, so our social media marketing is done through Twitter, with continual reinforcement of messages.’ He’s also impressed with the work of the Amenity Forum in representing what is a sometimes less well-understood sector: ‘It ties it all together, so we can lobby government and convey messages to the public.’

SOCIAL MEDIA IN BUSINESS ‘Social media is incredibly important,’ comments Ian Seager, Marketing Executive with Cub Cadet. ‘We’ve taken on a specific social-media coordinator to engage with consumers on various social media channels. If you don’t have a social media channel these days, it’s more noticeable by omission than actually having one.’ BALI communicates daily through social media and rich multimedia tools, particularly video and reviews, which ‘increases the percentage of new customers and encourages retention of existing client bases.’ It uses LinkedIn to reach new commercial and local authority clients, particularly to promote public realm projects and upcoming tenders. And BALI adds that ‘social media helps connect businesses within the industry and provides a sharing platform that stimulates and builds an online communal knowledge base and technical resource that can be used industry-wide.’ ‘We approach each social media platform differently and maintain a specific tone, content and style for each – they each have their own audience and appeal,’ comments Lyn Hunter. ‘It’s about content management, adding value to website news and sharing on the appropriate platforms, tuned to the appropriate audience. It’s vital to engage with your audience, respond and follow-up – don’t just create

Ken White agrees that social media has a role: ‘It can help grow business, and also share knowledge and resources. LinkedIn has become a good recruitment tool, and Facebook and Pinterest offers visual insights for the public.’ ‘Facebook is more of a business-to-consumer tool for us, rather than business-to business,’ says Richard Kay. ‘It’s useful for brand building, sharing content, and raising awareness. Twitter is quick, and visual, and LinkedIn is increasingly important for building business, and a database.’ He adds: ‘Social media makes engagement with customers more personal.’ Lynn Hunter agrees: ‘We maintain a professional, corporate face on LinkedIn and use this to inform and update our client networks. I see social media as a fundamental element of our marketing and promotional activity, and continue to build wider audiences across each platform. It’s not just about how many likes you have – it’s about quality content.’ Ian Seager confirms the increased impact of social media on business: ‘Everyone engages on social media (news feeds, etc), so the more you’re out there, the greater the business reach. It increases loyalty and brand engagement, and consumers can learn a lot. The industry seems to be moving that way – obviously, there’s more that can be done, but it’s definitely moving in that direction.’

BTME report

Winners of the BIGGA Awards 2017 The British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association honoured some of its most talented members with the presentation of the third annual BIGGA Awards. The awards were presented during BTME 2017, the largest turf management exhibition in Europe, at the Welcome Celebration event, hosted by Naga Munchetty. Each year the awards recognise outstanding greenkeeping performances from association members, with entries being received from courses all over the country. The winner of the Championship Greenkeeping Performance of the Year sponsored by GBR Technology was Lee Bishop and the team at Burnham Beeches Golf Club, for preparing and maintaining the course during the English Senior Women’s Open Amateur Strokeplay from 14-16 June 2016. BIGGA Chief executive officer Jim Croxton said: “This is an unheralded venue, with a small team who overcame substantial weather problems. Despite this, the golf course was in fantastic condition and England Golf, who hosted the event, said that if they could take that greenkeeping team around the country with them, they would do.” Runner-up in the category was Phil Chiverton and the team at The Grove for preparing and maintaining the course during the British Masters supported by Sky Sports from 13-16 October 2016. The winner of the BIGGA Young Greenkeeper of the Year sponsored by Jacobsen was David Stewart, Deputy Head Greenkeeper at Walmley Golf Club in Warwickshire. “2016 was an incredible year for David as he took on no less than four different roles at his club,” said Jim. “He took it all in his stride and alongside that he managed to get out, volunteering at tournaments and providing excellent support for the Young Greenkeepers’ Committee. “David also worked extremely hard to provide participation opportunities for our younger members within the Central England region.” The runner-up was Dan Waring, greenkeeper at Ashbourne Golf Club in Derbyshire. The winner of the BIGGA Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year sponsored by Rigby Taylor was David Langheim MG and the team at Wimbledon Park Golf Club. Each year Wimbledon Park must contend with thousands of cars parking on its fairways as the world’s most famous tennis tournament takes place next door. Led by Master Greenkeeper David Langheim, the team achieved outstanding results, which were acknowledged by the Sports Turf Research Institute. Jim said: “The STRI research data collected at Wimbledon Park is second to none, which is an outstanding achievement given the annual impact of the course being turned into a car park each year for the Wimbledon tennis tournament.” The runner-up in the award was Ben Kebby and the team at Temple Golf Club. BIGGA Chairman Les Howkins, Course Manager at The Richmond in London, said: “Congratulations to all the worthy winners of this year’s BIGGA Awards. These talented greenkeepers have demonstrated outstanding commitment and ability, not just

this year but throughout their careers, and so it is great that we have been able to honour them with these awards. “All the finalists were fantastic and show how, at every level and across the country, there are passionate greenkeepers who are a credit to the association, the greenkeeping industry and to themselves.” The Landscaper team zipped up to Harrogate to discover the new products and servces on offer at this years show...

BTME report Charterhouse Turf Machinery launched of a new turf roller from Graden. The new Graden Z2R (Zero to Roll) is a stand-alone unit that requires no trailer and no unhooking. It is designed for efficient rolling and, being fitted with 3 wheels which can be raised and lowered as required, quick and easy transportation between the greens. The Z2R uses zero turn technology to propel the unit forward providing a travel speed of up to 11mph from green to green, and 8.5mph whilst rolling. The Graden FLEX system provides a constant positive pressure across all rollers whilst keeping a relatively low PSI on the greens. With the rollers conforming to the contours of the green, a great finish is achieved, even on surfaces where big elevation changes occur. One of the biggest benefits is the reduction in manual handling. Being self-contained results in no lifting, hitching or positioning eliminating a lot of the issues relating to health & safety as well as making the whole process much quicker. It also frees up the utility vehicle that would usually be required to conduct the rolling, making it available for other essential tasks around the course. It has a large fuel capacity of 28 litres which should comfortably manage

Highest recorded sales month in 22 years

Green-tech is celebrating its most successful month of sales in its 22 year trading history. This comes as the company also celebrates its first year anniversary in their new purpose-built business park which has enabled them to increase their sales and administration support and vastly increase their warehousing and distribution facilities. Earlier this year Green-tech predicted this tree planting season to be their busiest but November’s sales figures have far exceeded their expectations. Head of Sales Richard Gill said, “November was a storming month and the good news is that it looks set to continue. We hold the largest stocks of tree shelters and stakes in the UK; our current stockholding is 2 million tree shelters. We can generally offer next day delivery and this coupled with our competitive pricing and sales expertise is a winner with our customers.” This news rounds off a successful year for Greentech despite the continued tough trading conditions. Green-tech is well known for its commitment to the landscaping industry and is an avid supporter and contributor. During 2016 the Head of Sales Richard Gill was voted in as the Chairman of the BALI North East and

64

Yorkshire region and Chairman Richard Kay was invited to join the main BALI board where he has taken up the position of Director responsible for Affiliates. Richard Kay and Managing Director Rachel Kay have also joined forces with the RHS and are mentors for The Green Plan It Challenge; a 10 week project that will see secondary school students re-thinking the role of green space for community benefit. Green-tech was also the headline sponsor for the second year of the BALI National Landscape Awards which took place last week and they themselves were winners in 2 award categories – Employer of Year and Affiliate Exceptional Service. Earlier this year the company restructured its sales team and promoted internally. Headcount now exceeds 60 employees but this is set to rise during 2017 as Green-tech continues in its drive to double its turnover by 2020. Chairman Richard Kay concludes, “I am thrilled at our present position. Trading conditions and the market continue to be tough but overall it has been a great year for Green-tech. A record month is always something to celebrate. I am delighted that our hard work has paid off. We are already looking forward to smashing this month’s figure so watch this space!”

ICL relieves the stress The use of ICL’s new Vitalnova Stressbuster has significantly improved the overall health of the turf on the fairways and greens at Castle Stuart Golf Club, reports Course Manager Chris Haspell. The Castle Stuart Golf Club in Inverness, Scotland is a championship links course which overlooks the Moray Firth and other well-known Highland landmarks such as Kessock Bridge and Chanonry Lighthouse. A relatively new course, having been constructed in 2009, Castle Stuart has become one of the most popular golf courses in Europe and hosted the Scottish Open on four occasions, including most recently in 2016. Chris, who spent over a decade working in Denmark as a course manager consultant’, was brought in at the very start of this exciting project in 2006. He oversaw the development of the course before it was officially opened in 2009 and he has been maintaining it to an excellent standard ever since. treatment to help condition turf against stress and also to aid recovery. The product was first suggested to him by Jamie Lees, ICL Technical Area Sales Manager for Scotland, after Chris outlined exactly what he was hoping to achieve. “The course suffers a lot from Basidiomycetes and we were looking for a product that would help fight this off at certain times of the year – this was when Jamie suggested the product. We do use an intensive wetting agent programme but we find that Vitalnova Stressbuster improves turf health and vigour, with the amino acid and carbohydrates helping to fight off unwanted stress and stimulating the good bacteria in the soil.” Chris applies Vitalnova Stressbuster at 25 L/ha on the fairways and 20 L/ha on the greens. Although Chris does not have firmly fixed dates in the calendar for applying the product, he uses it frequently throughout the year. “We use it as and when we feel it is necessary and there are multiple applications throughout the year.” “The results we have seen have been very good and the main benefit has been boosting the health of the turf. We don’t get much top growth from it but it keeps the plant healthy during periods of stress – which is exactly what we want.” Commenting on Castle Stuart’s use of Vitalnova Stressbuster, Jamie Lees said: “We sat down with Chris and discussed various products and ideas, and ultimately what he was looking to achieve on the golf course. news GKB Machines displayed their Sandfiller and SP100 Sandspreader, two machines from the range of equipment specifically designed for the maintenance and renovation of golf courses and sports pitches. The SP100 has been developed on the back of the success of GKB’s trailed versions and to meet customer needs with easy mounting onto turf trucks, such as the John Deere Gator and Toro Workman. Mounting is straightforward with a simple bolt-on system and stand legs allow the SP100 to be quickly set up or removed. With its 1m3 hopper capacity the machine suits a variety of purposes, evenly distributing materials, such as sand and mulch on sports pitches, with variable spread widths and depths. It’s easily fitted with electro-hydraulic controls and runs directly off the hydraulics of the chosen turf truck. The GKB Sandfiller is built to tackle the problems of surface drainage and aeration, especially on golf course greens. The Sandfiller simultaneously aerates and fills the topsoil with sand, creating the right conditions for excellent root growth. To allow the machine to properly follow the contours of the ground, three adjustable depth rollers are used while a slitting rotor, situated between conveyor rollers, operates the aerating and slitting actions. Two conveyor rollers are pivoted to distribute weight efficiently and material removed from the top layer by verticutting

is immediately collected in a sideways tipping container. The sand flow is controlled hydraulically by means of an adjustable valve situated on the side of the machine. In areas on the golf course where surface water and moss formation are a problem, the Sandfiller offers a fast solution for drainage and intensive aeration. Aeration of the top layer is economically and environmentally friendly, being costeffective through the all-in-one combination of aeration and sand filling. Intensive aeration of the grass leads to quicker recovery, greater green longevity and faster drainage of surface water, without the need for complete renovation. www.gkbmachines.com

news The Grass Group doubled its stand size at the BTME show. In part it’s to make room for new signing GKB machinery, plus an expanded showing from Trilo. Established brands like ATT, RotaDairon and CTI Tines were also accommodated. One of the highlights from the Trilo portfolio was the BL960 Blower, designed to be one of the most powerful on the market. The BL960 is fitted with a 960mm fan complete with 9 fan blades providing a large capacity and far reaching air making it ideal for use in large parks or on the golf course. It is driven by a Walterscheid PTO shaft and can optionally be equipped with a 180 degree reversible spouts which can be operated from the driver’s seat. The GKB range of equipment featured the Sandfiller. This machine is ideal for golf courses and sports fields where surface water and moss forming are a problem. It provides economic and environmentally-friendly aeration of the top layer by using three adjustable depth rollers and a slitting rotor. It can then fill the trenches with sand - the flow of which is controlled hydraulically by a valve on the side of the machine. Making its first appearance at BTME, and extending the comprehensive range of seeding machinery available from

RotaDairon, is the pedestrian propelled SEED-CAR - perfect for small spaces, or those with difficult accesses, it has a working width of just 700mm and weighs in at 51kg, but offers a 55 litre capacity. The SEED-CAR has an integral 18kg rear roller and height adjustable handlebar, complete will all controls, for easy seed distribution. CTI Tines, exclusively from The Grass Group. Sales Director Martin Lucas outlined GreenMech’s heritage, the role of wood chippers in today’s market and delivered a brief overview of the company’s range of machines along with their vast spectrum of clients. There were a number of changes in both GreenMech’s approach and product offering which includes new additions, and upgrades to, the Arborist and QuadChip ranges; the launch of GreenMech Finance and the introduction of a new blade sharpening unit – which provides customers with the control to sharpen their own disc blades. A key area of interest was the number of new dealer partnerships established both in the UK and overseas. for over 50 years. On the factory tour, more changes were evident with the introduction of lean processing in the fabrication and production areas. The recent switch has seen lead times cut from 13 weeks down to just 6-8 weeks, from a sheet of metal entering the factory one end to a chipper emerging the other. Then it was outside to see a range of the GreenMech units in action, including the newest product in the range, the Arborist 200. Also shown were popular favourites including the QuadChip 160 and the company’s unique Safe-Trak unit. Commenting on the event, GreenMech Director Jonathan Turner said, “It was a pleasure to open the doors once again and display all of the new developments we’ve been working hard on over the last couple of years. The atmosphere of the day was very positive and we welcomed the opportunity to show off our facilities that make us proud to be a British manufacturer.” sales@greenmech.co.uk Tel: +44 (0)1789 400044 www.greenmech.co.uk https://youtu.be/PBE0lUrBmM4

The new sapling will eventually grow up to the impressive size of the original Cedar of Lebanon planted by Brown, which was featured in the film version of ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007. “Capability Brown had a profound and lasting impact on the Estate and virtually all of his visionary designs for Blenheim Palace can still be appreciated here today,” said His Grace, Duke of Marlborough. “I am delighted to be marking his 300th anniversary by planting this cedar which will, hopefully, help to ensure his design genius continues to be enjoyed and appreciated by generations to come,” he added.

Huge increase in tree planting targets THE Scottish Government has revealed plans to increase its annual tree planting target from 10,000 hectares to 15,000 hectares by 2025 - an increase from around 22 million to 33 million trees every year. Leading trade body Confor: promoting forestry and wood has welcomed the “enormous ambition” for the forestry and timber sector which employs more than 25,000 people in Scotland and delivers £1 billion in annual economic value. The new targets for woodland creation were revealed to the Scottish Parliament by Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Roseanna Cunningham as part of the Scottish Government’s Draft Climate Change plan. Currently, the target is to plant 10,000 hectares of new woodland every year - around 22 million trees. The new

targets are: 12,000 hectares of new woodland from 2020-21 (around 26.5 million trees); 14,000 hectares of new woodland from 2022-23 (just over 32 million trees); 15,000 hectares of new woodland from 2024-25 (about 33 million trees) The Cabinet Secretary also revealed plans to increase the use of Scottish wood products in construction from the current level of 2.2 million cubic metres to 2.6 million cubic metres by 2021-22 and 3 million cubic metres by 2031-2. Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor, said: “This latest announcements by Roseanna Cunningham shows how forestry and timber can deliver rural jobs and play a major part in reducing carbon in the atmosphere.

Win new business Natural Paving Products has announced its new homeowner rating system is now live and fully integrated into its 2016 Landscaping Professional Awards, which are now open for entries. Updating the company’s membership scheme for professional landscapers, the Homeowner Rating System is an easy way to create an online portfolio of work and gain valuable customer reviews. Landscape professionals simply upload images and details of completed projects and Natural Paving Products will contact the owner to provide a review and star rating out of five. Providing a valuable reference base, the Homeowner Rating System helps Landscape Professionals stand out from the competition and actually win new business. As a profile begins to receive reviews it will also build its own average star rating, as well as a library of reviews, ratings and images – akin to TripAdvisor. Further supporting its Landscaping Scheme members, Natural Paving Products will highlight some of the best company profiles and projects across its social media channels. Additionally, the new platform gives potential customers a better insight into a Professional Landscaper prior to starting a project, which will help develop a better working relationship between the two parties. What’s more, every project uploaded to the Homeowner Rating System will be automatically submitted into the company’s Landscaping Professional Awards. This dramatically simplifies the entry process and incentivizes firms to upload as many projects as possible. Not only will uploading more projects improve Landscapers’ profiles, it will also increase their chance of winning the cash prizes up for grabs. Along with the Homeowner Rating System update, Natural Paving Products is simultaneously announcing that entries are now open for its 2016 Landscaping Professional Awards. The company’s awards are split across three categories: Best Patio, Best Driveway and Best Overall Design, with the winner and Runners Up each receiving a cash prize – closing date for entries is 31st January 2017. Malcolm Gough, Group Sales and Marketing Director at Natural Paving Products, commented: “We’re delighted to launch our new Homeowner Rating System and to announce entries for our 2016 awards are now open. Each year we’re blown away by the quality of entries to our awards so we are very interested to see what gets

submitted this time around. Likewise, it will be exciting to see the impact our Homeowner Rating System has for our scheme members. The system brings about real benefits for both landscape professionals and customers alike and so we are confident it will be well received. We believe it has the potential to become the go-to place for honest, trustworthy professional landscaper reviews.” www.naturalpaving.co.uk

Caroline said: “120 years is such a wonderful milestone and it’s fantastic to see how Notcutts has grown and developed since my great-grandfather established it in 1897. More than anything a passion for gardening has always been at the heart of the company and I’m so proud that our values of passion, inspiration and expertise still shine through today. We have big and exciting plans going forward so here’s to another fantastic 120 years!” Notcutts is currently investing into its future by implementing a five-year investment plan to update and reposition its garden centres within their respective markets. www.notcutts.co.uk

With supporting UK Horticulture at the heart of everything the HTA does, listening to our members and the industry is key, and the HTA is continuously staying in touch with its members to identify and deal with key garden issues and opportunities. Seven years ago the HTA launched the National Plant Show at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry to support our Growers and give them the right show at the right time of the year for them to do business. The event is now a staple date in the horticultural calendar and to enhance this offering and give a platform to even more of the industry the HTA will be introducing the co-located HTA Nursery Supply Show. Running as a separate exhibition in hall 3 at Stoneleigh alongside the HTA National Plant Show on the 20th and 21st June 2017 the HTA Nursery Supply Show will give even more to our visitors by both enabling them to buy plants but to also look at the critical elements that support plant sales, nursery retail and garden centres. Along with the National Plant Show this enhancement aims to be the number one show in UK for plants and nursery suppliers. The premier buying event for Garden Retailers, Retail Nurseries and Growers. The exhibition will follow the back to basics formula of the National Plant Show to allow the product to do the talking with the same low cost stand options for exhibitors to ensure the event is affordable for all. Visitors can expect to see a range of suppliers from labelling and product information companies, substrate and growing media through to display benching, potting machinery and everything in between. More details on the free to attend event will come with the official launch in January 2017 when booking for exhibitors will open. Commenting on the new show, HTA President Adam Wigglesworth from Aylett Nurseries said, “I am delighted that with the new event, alongside the National Plant Show, there will be an opportunity for visitors to see suppliers with products that help us sell more plants. I hope that the efficiency of having this event next door will make our visitors’ days even more

productive and worthwhile and be an exciting addition to a landmark event.” Geoff Caesar from The Bransford Webbs Plant Company said, “As an exhibitor at the National Plant Show since the very beginning we believe this exciting new development will provide even more reasons for both growers and retailers to visit the show. The new Nursery Supply Show will provide numerous opportunities to support the production and sale of plants in the UK and help build the strength of the British nursery and garden centre industry.” Neil Gray from Melcourt said, “The Nursery Supply Show running alongside the National Plant show offers a real opportunity to showcase UK horticulture through the supply chain of plants. We are looking forward to the opportunity to speaking to our existing customers and potential new customer about Melcourt products that serve both the retail and professional markets.” For more details please contact the events team at events@hta.org.uk

Multi-million pound park Johnsons of Whixley has supplied a contract grow worth £138,000 to supply a historic park in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Brooke Park, located near the city centre, has recently been reopened after a £5.6 million regeneration project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Derry City and Strabane District Council and the Stormont executive. GB Landscapes, a 70-strong landscape contractor team based in Castlederg, County Tyrone - specialists in hard and soft landscaping, construction works and commercial and public authority landscaping - appointed Johnsons of Whixley to supply a variety of plants to the scheme. The contract included 13,000 shrubs, 14,500 herbaceous and grasses, 4,300 rhododendron and azalea, 1,300 roses, hedging and 130 trees. Gary Baird managing director at GB Landscapes said: “This was a key account for us this year and needed to be site specific, to the highest of standards and on time to the tight scheduled plan. “Johnsons of Whixley helped us ‘contract grow’ specific plants for this project and the quality of plants were to specification and size. Credit is owed to account manager Tony Coles who was on hand at all times. “Johnsons of Whixley do an excellent job at consistently

delivering value for money and quality stock on time. We regularly benchmark and are always happy to see that the team provide the most competitive rates. From a soft service point of view, their customer service is exceptional. “We are more than happy to recommend their services. They are instrumental in us delivering quality to our clients and for that we are truly grateful and appreciative.” Brooke Park, also known as the People’s Park, was formerly the site of the city’s first orphanage and holds strong memories for local residents. Despite reopening to the public, restoration of the park will continue until the summer of 2017. Tony Coles, amenity sales manager at Johnsons of Whixley said: “We are delighted to have helped bring Brooke Park back into public use. We hope the park’s new fabric will improve the economic wellbeing of the city.”

THE

LANDSCAPER

By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe II Duce claimed that he was hard at work over Christmas investigating the growth of succulants. He returned with an expanded waistline, a deep sun tan and no sign of any copy. I spent most of the holiday waiting for the phone to ring with my summons to Trump Tower to start my new job as the Green Wall Executive. Vertical planting and the thought of greening up Don’s three thousand mile beautiful wall fills me with a real sense of excitement. I wrote a really beautiful CV, really the most beautiful CV that has ever been written in the history of really beautiful CV’s. It was fantastic, superb. He has not replied yet. As the founder of The British Association of Lady Landscapers (BALL) I expected to be at the front of the line. Perhaps the Mexicans will pay me for greening their side. I have to apologise for not replying to the 1000’s of e-mails I have received - some of your comments make interesting reading. “It is the best column in horticulture.” Or my favorite “You are too good for The Landscaper any magazine would be lucky if they could get you to work from them” There is a whiff of jealousy in the air A load of old bollards Townscape Products has released exclusive album artwork for the world’s first ever street-furniture-inspired album – Power Bollards. The Nottingham street furniture specialist teamed up with its bollards division on the initiative which sees much-loved, internationally renowned power ballads renamed with a street furniture twist. Power Bollards boasts a raft of classics including Gimme Cycle Shelter. The concept was the brain child of street furniture veteran Jimmy Bollard, curator of creative content at Nottingham-based street furniture

In addition to being a robust, efficient and versatile utility vehicle, the Kubota RTV X900 can also meet the requirements of any wedding. Graham Sage used the vehicle to drive his daughter Caroline to her village wedding. Caroline said: “The RTV is important to daily life on our farm. Not only is it great at navigating the Mendips here in Somerset, but it was also a fun and different way for me to get to my wedding venue!” What a lucky girl – I’m sure when my great day arrives I will have to use the company car as we are all on the minimum wage.

manufacturer Townscape and its sister site Bollards HQ. He told me in a tense telephone interview, “There was much discussion in the studio about the sort of album we wanted to make, and tempers sometimes frayed – but I guess that’s what happens when true artists collide’. “Someone once told me that street furniture could never be rock and roll. I wouldn’t like to be that person today.” Well that’s all folks keep the e-mails rolling in. I’m in the market for news, views, scandal or gossip: tabitha@landscapermagazine.com
