Landscaping takes off for Tilhill Forestry
Tilhill Forestry has re-launched its landscaping arm to complement the core business with a range of landscaping disciplines including environmental mitigation. As previous winners of many British Association of Landscape Industry (BALI) awards, Tilhill has a strong track record in the landscaping business and with the return of two highly experienced contracts managers, James Langdon and Chris Williams, the company is already winning impressive contracts. An extensive soft landscaping scheme for a housing development at Thannington Park, in Canterbury, has been completed. The work included screening, planting, mitigation planting and ecological planting. At the other end of the country a project has been completed on the Isle of Skye. Operations included clearance of existing vegetation, followed by ground preparation and tree planting. The final phase included protecting the trees and erecting a perimeter deer fence. Tilhill Forestry’s landscaping operation is BALI registered, fully ISO accredited, SafeContractor approved and is in the process of obtaining Constructionline accreditation. Tilhill can also work for Highways England after being approved for The National Highways Sector Scheme 18. Services include: tree planting; hedging; fencing works; habitat restoration, creation and mitigation; site clearance; maintenance; park restoration

and grassland creation. Tilhill Forestry’s Managing Director George McRobbie explains: “We have a great deal of experience in landscaping going back many years and we had retained several experienced managers who are now very keen to see a successful re-launch of this part of the business. “With planners wanting more open space and sustainable villages alongside the need to incorporate landscaping schemes into urban developments, we could see that there was a demand for the type of expertise we can offer. I am delighted that we have already completed and won several prestigious contracts.” Tilhill Forestry Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the BSW Timber Group, was established nearly 70 years ago. It is a national company operating from a network of offices throughout the UK. The company provides a full range of consultancy and contracting services to the forest owner and forestry investor. There is also a complementary soft landscaping operation. Further information is available at www.tilhill.com BSW is the most technologically advanced sawmill in the UK employing over 1,200 people. The Company’s roots date back to 1848, and with seven sawmills in the UK and one in Latvia, has a production capacity of more than 1.2 million m3 of sawn timber which is distributed throughout construction, fencing and landscape markets. www.bsw.co.uk

Energy for the Owls Andy Thompson, head groundsman at Sheffield Wednesday FC, has reported excellent results since using Sherriff Amenity’s GoGreen Energy biostimulant. Andy landed the head groundsman’s role at Sheffield Wednesday FC in 2014. A year later the club had a Desso Grassmaster pitch

installed and Andy along with his team work around the clock in order to keep it in excellent condition. This is mainly due to heavy usage and the construction of Hillsborough Stadium. GoGreen Energy is a concentrated bio-stimulant, formulated to assist plant health and relieve stress symptoms in a wide variety of amenity turf situations. Containing seaweed, plant sugars, simple carbohydrates and a specially selected full package of trace elements, GoGreen Energy provides optimum results when grass is stressed. The low NPK analysis, complemented by suitable wetting and spreading agents, makes this an ideal component of any turf maintenance programme. Andy applies 60 litres of GoGreen Energy on a fortnightly basis or when using it the day before a match he applies 40 litres. “GoGreen Energy has performed incredibly well and has given us a shine on the surface that is aesthetically pleasing - especially for a night time kick-off,” says Andy. “It has taken away some of the stresses the plant gets from a football match, the pitch has played better with a lot less scars forming and the rooting seems to have significantly improved.” www.sherriffamenity.com

Improved rodent control The new highly-attractive Talon Track monitoring paste from Syngenta will help early detection of rodent pest populations, and ensure a smooth transition to the highly-effective Talon Soft for rapid pest control. The fully integrated approach to rodent control now involves initial tracking with Talon Track, to identify pest activity; treating with Talon Soft to quickly control populations; and then monitoring for future reinfestation with Talon Track. Talon Track has the same high palatability, texture and ‘look and feel’ to the complementary Talon Soft rodenticide. The only difference is that it is non-toxic and an off-white colour, to aid differentiation for operators when swapping from Track to the blue Talon Soft. Talon Track is supplied in 300g cartridges, for quick and clean application using a caulking gun. It is liner or tray to initially place the Talon Track, which can extremely stable and should remain highly palatable for be simply and cleanly lifted and replaced with the active weeks after application. Operators can use a bait box Talon Soft when required. Harrowden_Landscaper_Jun16_Layout 1 14/06/2016 11:33 Page 1

Not for sale Last month, Tusk announced the “NOT FOR SALE” garden entry at the 2017 RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The conceptual garden, created by Ferguson & Whyte Garden Design and generously sponsored by Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens, is inspired by the devastating effects of the global ivory trade.
The garden is designed by experienced landscape gardeners Mark Whyte and Charmayne Ferguson who last year delivered a Silver Gilt award conceptual garden. Learning from their experience, they are confident of securing a Gold Gilt with this year’s concept, which has already received strong commendations from the RHS selection panel. They have already chosen to use experienced garden landscapers, Hythe Garden Landscapes to build the garden as they did such a good job in 2016. As the company continues to expand, taking on such a large project is manageable and with a team of experienced and trained landscape gardeners, they are confident that they can deliver a garden worthy of an award. Visitors will be encouraged to walk around a ring of 100 pairs of tusk arches, each representing the estimated number of African elephants killed by poachers every day. Sounds of the African savannah will play around the tusks while arid grasses, plants and trees will help create a real sense of Africa. At the end of the arched walk, the garden opens into an African savannah, where the bones of an elephant lie in the dust as a powerful symbol of the destruction of Africa’s elephants.
Tangible Garden The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) is delighted to announce that BALI Designer member Lynn Hill’s Tangible Garden, built by Registered Contractor Endrick Landscapes, has won Best New Show Garden and a Silver Gilt medal at Gardening Scotland in Edinburgh. This was the first ever show garden for Lynn Hill of Lynn Hill Garden Design and brothers Kenny and Lewis Macfadyen from Endrick, with crowds of visitors complimenting the garden’s colourful, traditional planting design, celebration of outdoor living and high quality build. BALI’s Chief Executive Wayne Grills and Marketing and Communications Manager Darren Taylor were onhand meeting members of the public who were interested in the Tangible Garden, to promote landscaping and garden design services offered by members regionally. Tangible Garden was also featured extensively on BBC2 Scotland’s Beechgrove Garden programme. Wayne Grills, BALI’s Chief Executive, commented; ‘Tangible Garden represented a truly collaborative effort across our regional Scotland membership, with support from a wide number of Contractors and Affiliate members who helped with the construction and supply of plants and paving. We are incredibly proud of Lynn, Kenny and Lewis for their award-winning garden and their hard work and efforts in representing the association in such a positive way. The design brief of creating a multi-level, realistic, domestic rear garden that celebrated outdoor living, truly hit the mark, as show visitors loved the concept, inspiring them to recreate the same, or similar style, for their own home.’

Your Industry – Your Show Organisers of SALTEX (Sports Amenities Landscaping Trade Exhibition) have launched their new 2017 campaign, which features the distinguished heartshaped logo formed of grass complete with the words – Your Industry - Your Show. In 1934 a groundsman at Eton College named William Bowles believed the industry needed a voice, and an organisation which sought to improve both the status and standards of grounds professionals, so together with 10 other founding members the National Association of Groundsmen, which later became the Institute of Groundsmanship, was formed. In 1938, SALTEX was launched to unite the industry and offer educational and networking opportunities for those that managed green spaces. 79 years’ later the show has continued to grow and has now established itself as Europe’s largest annual turf management event. With its home at the NEC, in Birmingham, SALTEX remains true to those within the industry offering a world of limitless opportunities in which they can discover the latest trends and innovations, connect with colleagues and learn from top industry professionals. This year, the show floor will be bursting with everything a visitor needs to increase their efficiency and improve operations. More than 220 leading manufacturers and suppliers have already confirmed their attendance to showcase an extensive range of products and resources and visitors can expect to see the industry’s newest advances and compare the full array of equipment, products and services. Learning LIVE, SALTEX’s world-class educational programme, guarantees to offer a wealth of new knowledge to delegates as well as boosting their CPD points. Throughout the programme over 100 industry experts and leaders will share important information that can ultimately help a visitor further their career. SALTEX also offers its visitors free advice and guidance on specific turf challenges through the IOG regional pitch advisors on hand. SALTEX 2016 saw a number of unique show features all designed to assist and help develop those within the industry - the Young Groundsmen’s Conference provided an ideal opportunity for young people looking to advance their career; Pathology and Soil Science LIVE allowed visitors to look in detail at the symptoms of turfgrass fungal disease problems; and the SALTEX

College Cup - an academic test of turf management knowledge for students enrolled at UK colleges, helped to raise the level of academic prowess in the industry. These features have again been confirmed for SALTEX 2017 and are set to be even bigger in size and offering. From show features, to educational topics, the show is continually evolving with the people of the industry in mind. Each year a large team of dedicated show organisers undertake strategic planning to ensure that the show remains fresh, vibrant and essentially everything a visitor and exhibitor expect it to be. Perhaps it is the underlying vision of William Bowles and his co-founders, combined with the IOG’s unrivalled ambition for the show, which has ensured that SALTEX continues to go from strength to strength. The 2016 exhibition saw an increase in both exhibitors (292) and visitors (8,754) and over 20 exhibitors have increased their stand size for this year’s event. Growth is a key word as show organisers strive to get people all over the world talking about SALTEX and the industry. Visitors from over 45 countries attended SALTEX 2016 and its social media campaign for 2016 boasted a reach of over 1.1 million users across Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIN. Each year more and more grounds care professionals and manufacturers from around the world come in record numbers to immerse themselves in two days of unparalleled interaction. SALTEX 2017 will be held at the NEC, Birmingham on 1 and 2 November 2017. For more information visit www.iogsaltex.com

Tree Failure Risk Tool
In partnership with the University of Lancaster, aerial mapping company Bluesky has launched a new tool which can be used to predict the likelihood of trees falling on essential infrastructure such as roads, railways and power lines. Using complex wind analysis techniques combined with geographic data from Bluesky, the model assigns a level of risk to individual trees. Accessible via a web based application, users of the TREEFALL (Tree Risk Evaluation Environment for Failure and Limb Loss) tool are expected to include transport infrastructure managers, utility companies and Local Authorities. “Extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common,” commented Alan Blackburn, Professor of
Geospatial Science at the Lancaster Environment Centre, part of the University of Lancaster. “The latest storm season kicked off with storm Angus, followed in close succession by Barbara, Conor, Doris and Ewan, each of which saw disruption to travel, damage to property, power outages and, unfortunately, in some instances, loss of life. James Eddy, Technical Director of Bluesky, added, “This tool, underpinned by the most up to date and accurate data, is really all about the effective targeting of limited resources. Using TREEFALL, a desktop survey along a railway line or power network can be undertaken, then an assessment of risk can be made and action, if required, taken, minimising the potential for future disruption caused by falling trees.” Isuzu Truck UK has appointed a new and experienced service dealer in Northampton. Wrights Commercials, based on the outskirts of the town, has teamed up with Peterboroughbased Imperial Commercials, who took over the area’s main Isuzu Truck franchise in early 2016. The new arrangement means that Isuzu truck owners can now use Wrights Commercials as its authorised Isuzu service dealer rather than make the round-trip to Peterborough, the base for the Imperial Commercials’ Isuzu Truck dealership. www.wrightsofnorthampton.co.uk

Summer pests The ideal solution to a vast majority of garden pests is a biological and effective nematode control, which can be simply watered on, leaving no unsightly residue, and causing absolutely no side effects or harm to children, pets or non-target species such as birds or hedgehogs. Nematodes are naturally occurring microscopic animal organisms that act as natural pest controls. Nematodes attack the pest by entering natural body openings, releasing a bacteria which quickly and safely kills it. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey. Each nematode species controls a different type of pest, from slugs, to vine weevils, to leatherjackets, which means that you are certain to find the solution to most garden annoyances. BASF create a range of nematode products including
Nemaslug and Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer, Leatherjacket Killer, Vine Weevil Killer and No Ants. There is, even, a nematode product, containing a variety of different nematode species, created specifically for fruit and vegetable pests, making it perfect for gardeners who are passionate about ‘grow your own’. “British gardeners are increasingly using beneficial nematodes as one the most effective ways control slugs and other pests. Nemaslug and Nemasys products are natural, highly effective and environmentally friendly with no adverse effects to children, pets and wildlife,” says BASF’s Gavin Wood. “Treatment can continue throughout the growing season and when the pests have all been wiped out the level of nematodes in the soil will immediately drop back to the normal concentrations. When temperatures drop at the end of the season, the nematodes will naturally reduce in quantities until the soil warms up again.”
Spectacular Display Garden A special ribbon cutting event was held at Notcutts Garden Centre Wheatcroft in Nottingham to mark the opening of the new Notcutts Garden. The garden was officially opened on 2 June by Garden Centre Manager Nic Perrett alongside customers, local gardening groups and the Notcutts Wheatcroft team. The Notcutts Garden, which is split into two zones, aims to inspire visitors with creative ideas for their own outdoor spaces, featuring over 350 plants from 45 different varieties which have been carefully selected to suit different areas of the garden. Zone A includes an impressive water feature table in which culinary kitchen plants and herbs are the star of the show, whilst Zone B is inspired by a vintage country garden. The main feature of Zone B is a corner arbour seat, which is framed by large multi-stem birch trees and overlooks a sea of soft white, pink and purple blooms. The two zones are linked by a pathway which is covered by a wooden venetian pavilion. The garden was designed by Notcutts’ Head of Visual Merchandising, Marco de Jongh; Plant Buyer, Stuart Andrews; and Chairman Nicky Dulieu. Alongside the local Notcutts team of horticultural experts, the garden took just over two weeks to complete. Nic Perrett, Garden Centre Manager at Wheatcroft said, “We’re delighted with the beautiful Notcutts Garden and
we’d like to thank everyone who joined us at our official opening event. The garden celebrates the best of what we do at Notcutts – to provide expert advice and inspiration to customers with all levels of gardening experience, and with outdoor projects of all sizes. Over the years, Notcutts has won 50 Gold medals at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, so we’re pleased to bring our expert experience to Wheatcroft with a stunning garden design to inspire our customers.” www.notcutts.co.uk

Kai Wärn, CEO and President for Husqvarna Group said: “Celebrating 1,000,000 environmentally friendly robotic mowers is a milestone for the Group. More than twenty years ago, we created the robotic mower market and have developed the market ever since. We naturally have a strong market leadership within this category while many of our competitors still are fairly new in the market. We see that in many countries the market for robotic mowers remains small, while others have grown substantially - meaning sizeable growth opportunities in this exciting segment remains. Ground Control introduce zero-emissions Ground Control, the UK’s leading maintenance and external works company has introduced battery powered grounds maintenance equipment to their EMCOR, United Utilities contract at Lingley Mere Business Park, UU head office. Continuing focus on innovation, sustainability, and reduction of our carbon footprint, Queen’s Award winning Ground Control has invested over £2000 in brand new battery powered equipment, adding a blower, long arm hedgecutter, short arm hedgecutter and strimmer to the contract at Lingley Mere. The new equipment was issued to the team at the end of April, and has enabled the company to better fulfil the contract with United Utilities at their head office. A lot of the maintenance work surrounds clean water testing labs, where petrol powered equipment is not suitable due to potential contamination of the water quality testing. The new equipment removes the need for slower manual equipment
near the building, giving the team on site more time to further improve the site standards. As well as reducing the burning of fossil fuels, the new eco-friendly equipment greatly reduces noise pollution on the estate for site users and all wildlife present. Ground Control uses zero emission handheld tools on numerous sites around the country, including the National Maritime Museum. Ground Control’s Regional Contracts Manager, Luke Plass, who manages the contract, commented; “It’s becoming more and more important for us to work in ways that are sustainable, reducing our carbon footprint. The tools have proved much easier and safer to use, as they eradicate the severe vibration that comes with using petrol powered tools. Our continued partnership with United Utilities is testament to our team’s hard work on this contract, and we are pleased to be able to continue an outstanding service delivery in-line with their requirements.”

Business Heroes UK Businesses, big and small, are being urged to take action to support their local community growing groups, many of which struggle to make ends meet. Katie Rushworth, who co-presents ITV’s Love Your Garden with Alan Titchmarsh, is launching the ‘Business Heroes’ campaign with a new video and toolkit, explaining how businesses can benefit and offering practical advice about how to get involved. Community growing is a simple idea: a group of local people, usually volunteers, get together to transform a patch of land into an oasis of nature, where people can gather, learn, grow and relax. Katie Rushworth, who runs her own garden design company and is passionate about local food and growing initiatives, says: “Community growing groups make neighbourhoods better, healthier and friendlier places but, with less funding around, many of them struggle. That’s why finding ‘Business Heroes’ to support them is so vital. “Take my home village in Yorkshire for example. Our local community garden is a place for local residents to get together to transform flowerbeds, containers and baskets but this only happens because of local business sponsorship and volunteers who want to give something back to the place they live and work in.” Regardless of their size, all businesses have something to offer. Some prefer to sponsor a project or offer funding over a longer period whilst others get employees involved in fundraising activities or volunteering. Offering discounts on products or free use of equipment is another way of helping, as well as donating skills and training - anything from website design to book keeping. There is plenty of evidence to show businesses themselves gain tangible benefits from offering support. It’s good for employee health and wellbeing, a practical way of supporting local communities, can improve the local economy and also boosts a company’s local reputation. Statistics from Employee Volunteering, an organisation involved in bringing together business and local communities, reinforce these benefits. 97 per cent of volunteers say activities help develop a strong team and 95 per cent say volunteering has had a positive influence on them. It is estimated there are more than 2,500 community

growing groups in the UK. These include city farms, community gardens, community orchards, therapeutic and children’s gardens. Most rely on voluntary support and need more help to thrive. According to a recent survey, nearly half of the community growing groups questioned regularly operated at a loss and the majority felt the success of their project relied on grant funding. North East England: Dynamic landscapes and people The North East England is a large region encompassing rural areas with classic stone-walled dales and moors, and echoes of past industry, the rugged coastline, and modern cities such as Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Sunderland, and Durham Ffion Llwyd-Jones reports
T
he North East landscaping industry is thriving and growing, a result of continuous adapting and changing to client’s needs, alongside honest hard work. Projects range from immense landscape regeneration and public-realm projects, to manor house and castle grounds’ redesign, and natural swimming pools. As varied as the projects, local challenges include sourcing trained staff, educating clients, the sometimeslong distances between projects – and the rain. STRONG ‘Business is strong in the North East at the moment,’ is the comment from Richard Kay, Chairman of Knaresboroughbased Green-tech. ‘2017 has been our busiest year and we’re on course to add 25% to last year’s turnover. We continue to expand our workforce, which has more than doubled over the last 4 years. An £8million regeneration programme, which includes urban landscaping, has started in two South East Leeds neighbourhoods, and we’ve just finished two

large motorway projects – the A1 upgrade and Bedale bypass ¬– supplying about 650,000 tree/shrub shelters.’ Business growth in the past 4 years has seen the number of designers increase from one to five for Lizzie Tulip Garden Design, based in North Yorkshire. ‘More money is being spent on gardens, and bigger projects. The business has expanded a lot, and we’ve got an exciting year ahead with public projects, and a spa, golf resort, and five very large manor house schemes,’ says Lizzie Tulip, a Chelsea Flower Show medal winner. She adds: ‘We’re working on a project at Stamford Bridge, which includes converting a stable block as part of a larger manor house, an orchard and former lawn gardens, and a courtyard garden and a walled garden, with some artist collaboration, and lovely water features. And a project near Harrogate involves a cloister garden, a bog garden, formal lawns, an orchard and a beautiful kitchen garden.’ Expansion to new offices is a sign of the growth at North Yorkshire-based Eves and Lewis. ‘We’ll also be looking to take on a new staff member later on this year, ‘ adds Karen Lewis, Partner. ‘We joined BALI earlier this year as part of our continuing mission to raise the profile of garden design and good quality landscaping in the North East.’ While Sarah Murch, Director at Ensata, in Doncaster comments that they have to go all over the country ‘because we just couldn’t exist if we built pools only in the North’, she adds that there is a definite increase in enquiries and projects in the North East. ‘East Yorkshire is particularly active at the moment,’ she says. ‘We see more interest in the North, around Leeds, Harrogate, York, and Cheshire – there’s more interest and an increase in enquiries – it’s looking good.’

‘I’m very busy, and I think it’s social media that’s made the difference,’ says Sally Tierney, Yorkshire Garden Designer, based in York. ‘A lot of people start looking for a garden designer online, so the website is the shop window and it needs to be kept up to date with new photographs and projects.’ Having worked in the Leeds area for more than 20 years, Helen Voisey is also consistently busy. ‘I like to be involved at all the different stages,’ she says. ‘The North East is a lovely area to work in, and I have great clients, with a mix of small and medium projects.’
The North East is a brilliant place to work And as John McNally GreenFingers comments: ‘We’ve been in business for 28 years, and we never seem to stop! In general, people seem to have higher budgets than ten years ago - in some cases up to 40% higher.’ AWARENESS It’s an awareness of the products that Sarah Murch sees as one of the reasons for business growth. ‘We’re getting
a lot of enquires for conversions, where people put in a swimming pool 20 years ago in larger properties, and they’re now causing real problems – so we see that as a growth area.’ she says. ‘We build natural swimming pools and design and landscape larger designs around the pools as well. We do bespoke natural pools, and we do them to fit in with the clients who want an alfresco living area, and we wrap the pool around the patio, and possibly a sauna or a summer house, so it becomes a real living area. And for the money they invest, they really want to get out an enjoy using the pool, so we’ll do more landscaping around it as well, rather than just drop a pool in.’ ‘Being primarily a garden design company means Eves and Lewis in an unique position in the Northeast as there are very few companies that just specialise in garden design,’ comments Karen Lewis. She adds that Chris Eves, Partner, is the only fully registered member of the SGD in the Tyne & Wear area. ‘Lifestyle choices also means people want to have artificial lawns - that seems to be increasingly popular,’ says John McNally. He adds that clients want a contemporary, modern look rather than the basic lawn and patio of a few years ago, with more requests for structure in the design and the plantings, and more use of as topiary.

Clients are becoming more informed and educated, which is great as they know what they want as they’re more informed in the first place, comments Sally Tierney. ‘People are more environmentally aware, so they don’t want to use chemicals, and they do want more planting that look good but also attract birds, and water for hedgehogs. They’re moving away from formal design to more informal, wildlife friendly, environmentally sensitive design, and the impact of the materials on the environment. As soon I get an enquiry, I send people a book I’ve written, because there
East Yorkshire is particularly active at the moment are three common problems that the book can help to find answers: some people don’t know what they want in their garden so they don’t know where to start; they discuss maintenance after the garden is already been designed and built, instead of beforehand; and as it’s easier to work with nature rather than against it, it’s important to work out what in their garden.’ ‘We’re doing more kitchen gardens, and we’re putting in more edible plants in mixed schemes, and people are

spending money on greenhouses, and potting sheds,’ comments Lizzie Tulip. CHALLENGES Difficulty in finding fully trained staff is an ongoing challenge, comments Karen Lewis. ‘There’s a lack of garden design/horticultural training in our area, and the nearest garden design diploma/degree course is many miles away.’ She adds: ‘Garden design as a concept in itself is a relatively new concept for the Northeast, people sometimes struggle to understand the difference between garden design and landscaping. Sourcing good quality materials has also

been a challenge. Most of the best plant suppliers are still further south; although there are some up-and-coming local suppliers, we often have to go further afield, which increases haulage costs. ‘Obviously the weather plays a huge part in our business and as the rainfall is greater in this area than other parts of the country we have to react very quickly to take advantage of any window of opportunity to complete the work, ‘ comments Duncan Ross, Managing Director of Duncan Ross. ‘It can be challenging but we work with the weather and have developed an extremely efficient workforce and business.’ ‘As a business, we’ve made a very conscious effort to look for locally sourced produce, so we use local suppliers, and we question when things are brought in from Holland and Italy. So, our designs may have to evolve and change, and that’s an interesting challenge,’ concludes Lizzie Tulip. ‘There is a big difference from the amount of work available in the North East to that in the North West,’
comments Green-tech. ‘The North East is spread out geographically and encompasses a huge amount of rural land. There are some good-sized projects in the major cities of Leeds and Newcastle, but still well behind the North West where significantly more money is being invested. This could be the ‘Premiership effect’ – large foreign companies, such as BCEG (Beijing Construction. International property

developer and construction company) are pumping money into the NW. They are currently undertaking a £700m project at Middlewood Locks in Salford.’ For Helen Voisey, a move to Nidderdale creates a challenge: ‘About 12 months ago, I moved to Nidderdale, which is beyond Harrogate and Leeds. And the business has changed, as this area is more rural, and I’m finding that I’m still getting work in my old area, so I’ll be commuting a bit more.’
RESOURCES ‘We have the materials to work with, such as locally sourced material such as the beautiful sandstone from local quarries,’ says Lizzie Tulip. She adds there are also key nurseries and suppliers: ‘Such as Green-tech and Johnsons of Whixley, and some really nice smaller nurseries. Summerfield Nurseries just asks what we want supplied and say they’ll grow it.’ Helen Voisey comments that she’s always wanted to see her design holistically: ‘Johnsons of Whixley, the plant suppliers, are taking drone footage of four of my projects, including Rossett Park. It’s great from a design point of view, because it’ll be nice to see it from above.’ ‘Garden tourism is booming in the North East,’ comments Green-tech. ‘Numerous flower shows such as Harrogate Spring flower show, Harrogate Autumn flower show and the Great Yorkshire show have expanded. We have an abundance of gardens in the North East, such as RHS Harlow Carr, which also serve to educate the younger generations into a career in the landscaping industry.’ FUTURE ‘As to the future. we are looking to consolidate our existing skills for sports turf construction, drainage and maintenance to include renovation,’ comments Duncan Ross. ‘So have Green-tech: Bushey Cemetery, London

recently expanded the services we offer to include a Koro Field Top Maker and Vredo Seeder as the demand for turf renovation is increasing.’ ‘These are lifestyle products, it’s so much more than a swimming pool,’ says Sarah Murch. ‘It’s a place relax, and connect with nature and a low-maintenance place to be in the garden. At our pool in the summer, we have bats flying over, dragon flies hovering, there’s the kingfisher that sits on deckchair to fish the pool, swallows dipping as you swim.’ The Natural Pool and 5-acre Ellicar Gardens is open on Fridays throughout summer. Sarah adds: ‘We’ve got 23 species of birds on the red and amber conservation concern list. The eco-system is phenomenal, with newts and amphibians – the wildlife is extraordinary.’ ‘We’re investing heavily in training and the younger workforce by taking on apprentices throughout the business,’ comments Green-tech. ‘We’ve taken on our first three apprentices and looking for three more, which will equate to 8% of our head count. There are significant concerns in the market over labour and skills shortage so it’s a good time to promote industry initiatives such as BALI Go Landscape and the APL Worldskills competition. The industry is struggling to recruit good people to cope with increased workloads.’
Clients always ask for low maintenance, says Helen Voisey. She adds: ‘I’m not sure it really exists – but it’s something I’m always mindful of. I have done two projects with artificial grass. It suited those sites because of tricky access, a small garden, and all-year functionality. It’s been great for those clients and they’re thrilled they made that choice. Bees and butterflies have also become a bit of a trend over the past year or so.’ As Sally Tierney concludes: ‘The North East is a brilliant place to work, the people are great, and we have some fantastic landscapes that people take a lot of inspiration from. People are passionate about the landscape, and my job is to make sure the garden fits in to its surroundings. There’s the drystone walls, the moors, coast, the dales, and the coastline, and people do respond to the beauty around them.’ A wide-ranging area, the North East offers equally wideranging opportunities for diverse landscape projects, and cutting-edge designs –which are more than adequately met by the region’s industry professionals, who share a marked enthusiasm for working in this thriving corner of England.

Record numbers to Bloom A record number of almost 120,000 people attended Bord Bia’s Bloom festival in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, over the June bank holiday weekend
T
ara McCarthy, Chief Executive, Bord Bia told The Landscaper, “We are proud that our Bloom event has developed into such an inspirational festival of creativity, a place where creators of food and drink, of gardens, craft and art get a platform to tell their story. Each year, Bloom provides Bord Bia, and our key stakeholders, with an invaluable opportunity to engage with consumers, helping us to build insight, learn and share new ideas while celebrating and showcasing the best of Ireland’s horticulture, food and drink industry. In addition to being a great place to visit, Bloom has a strong track record of delivering sales and new business for our stakeholders, both here onsite and more importantly developing trade relationships for future business. This is a key component of the show, and one that Bord Bia is keen to deliver and build upon.” This year’s event also received a ringing endorsement from Bob Sweet, former Head of Judging for the Royal Horticulture Society in the UK. Mr. Sweet, who has visited the show on many occasions, “There is no doubt in my mind that this year’s Bloom event is better than Chelsea. It is a world-class showcase and Bord Bia should be very proud of what it has achieved in a relatively short period of time. I recall the first show back in 2007 and it is just incredible to see how the event has evolved.” Bloom 2017 attracted many newly established food companies, and craft makers. Almost a third of exhibitors (33) within the Food Village were new to Bloom and a third of the Craft Village retailers were new companies and / or new to Bloom. More than 10,000 visitors left plants in the Plant Crèche to be cared for while they enjoyed the festival. The volunteers working on at the Bloom farmyard were busy over the five day festival, with over 50kg of wool sheared, enough for 50 wool jumpers, and some 20,000 litres of milk produced onsite. Within the Food Village, Jelly Bean Factory gave away 50,000 beans, East Coast Bakehouse sampled over 25,000

biscuits and Wild Irish Seaweed sold 100 kilos of dry seaweed over the weekend. Over 15,000 children used the new ‘Bloom passports’ introduced by Bord Bia for this year’s show, while 30 schools, with over 1,000 children visited the show. This year’s show featured 22 show gardens, 13 postcard gardens and 33 nursery displays. The judging panel for Bloom 2017 comprised of 14 Irish and international horticultural experts, who awarded more than 100 awards to show garden designers, amateur postcard garden designers; nurseries and floral artists including 28 Gold, 18 Silver Gilt, 21 Silver and 21 Bronze medals. It will take 14 days to clear the Bloom site (it took 31 days to build Bloom 2017). A total of 4,000 people worked onsite over the 5 days including 200 Bord Bia volunteers. A show garden inspired by the rugged Connemara Coast, designed by Oliver and Liat Schurmann of Mount Venus Nursery in Dublin, has been announced as Overall Large Garden. The ‘FBD Insurance Transition’ garden features a waterlandscape with a dramatic tidal effect, capturing the essence of the Irish coast. First time Bloom designers, Laura Cassin, Louise Jones and Linda Murphy were announced as Overall Medium Garden winners for their Teagasc Garden of Hope in association with Pieta House. The garden, which aims to evoke serenity and a connection with nature to raise the spirit, will move to a permanent home at one of the Pieta House centres after Bloom. Previous Bloom-medal and Super Garden winner, Leonie Cornelius received the Overall Small Garden award for the ‘Everyone Has a Dream’ garden in association with Woodies which aims to show how, through careful design and creative thinking, we can build the garden of our dreams on a small scale. total of 79 medals were awarded to the gardens and floral exhibitors across two Floral Marquees, which included 26 Silver-Gilt Medals, 15 Silver Medals and four Bronze Medal. The IQ Quarry Garden, by multi award-winning designer Paul Hervey-Brookes, was awarded a Gold Medal and the coveted title of ‘Best Show Garden’. Inspired by the life cycle of a quarry, this contemporary garden is divided into sections to contrast the bountiful floral and naturalistic planting with other more severe and uncompromising features. On his award, Paul Hervey-Brookes said: “I am absolutely thrilled. This was the last project I worked on with my partner before he passed away and I wanted to make sure it was something he was proud of.” Shows Judging Manager, Joanna Shirley, said: “it is an exceptional garden, fantastically innovative and hugely
atmospheric, with many special moments to linger and enjoy. The beautiful sculptural wall is unique and very effective in framing the garden against this beautiful landscape here at the show.” Butter Wakefield’s Belmond Enchanted Garden also received a Gold Medal, along with The Wedgewood Garden – a Classic Re-imagined, which was designed by RHS Young Designer 2014 winner Sam Ovens. In addition, two SilverGilts, one Sliver and two Bronze Medals were awarded across the eight Show Gardens. The award for Best Exhibit in the Floral Marquees was given to Pheasant Acre Plants, while Roualeyn Fuchsias scooped the new Design Award, and the title of RHS Master Grower went to Hoyland Plant Centre. Within the two Floral Marquees 71 medals were awarded in total, including 31 Gold, 24 Silver-Gilt, 14 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals.

mowers
Bag, mulch or discharge
When choosing a new mower, one of the questions to ask yourself is, do you want the option to bag, mulch or discharge the clippings? There are benefits to each, which makes 3-in-1 machines, which have the capability to do all of these, a great choice. With a 3-in-1 mower, by removing the collection bag, the cuttings can be released through the back of the mower. The rear discharge option is perfect to use if the grass is damp, as it prevents it from clogging up the machine. Not only that, but, if mown regularly, a rear discharge model will provide a wide and even dispersal of grass clippings behind the mower in a very thin, fine layer. This is preferable to side discharge, where you would have to go over the lawn with a rake after mowing to collect the rows of cuttings created. The finish on the lawn is attractive, and the nutrients from the cuttings are fed back into it, making it healthier with every cut. The LR2 NR76 mini-rider from Cub Cadet is a perfect machine for the job. It is part of the new ‘entry level’ Force Series, consisting of products for gardeners who are looking for power, performance, durability and who appreciate powerful machinery at an affordable price

point. It has a 76cm / 30” cutting width and a cutting height range of 38-95mm though five adjustable deck positions, making it suitable for a variety of lawn cutting requirements. With a convenient turning radius of 46cm / 18”, and large, grass-gentle tyres, this machine will navigate even the trickiest of terrain, without causing any lawn damage. Thanks to the compact design, this Mini-Rider is able to get through typical garden gates with ease and with the easy entry step-through frame design, it is as easy to use as it is manoeuvrable. By removing the grass bag, the rear discharge option also aids this ease of movement around objects. As with all LR2 models, the LR2 NR76 benefits from superior, luxurious hydrostatic transmission, Intelligent Parking Assistance (IPA), and RevTek functionality, enabling mowing in reverse. In addition, the LR2 models all have LED headlights and provide maximum rider comfort with a high backrest seat with cut-away, which allows for better air circulation, and an adjustable steering column for the perfect fit. www.cubcadet.co.uk

Safety Cut
STM Co Ltd in Warwickshire have been dealers for the Humus range of grasscare machinery for many years, with the spiral “Safety Cut” mulching head being an outstanding and award-winning product. Humus have specialised in machinery for cutting grass in the fruit growing areas, and the required maintenance under tree branches has lead to the development of the AFLR unit for maintaining grass under solar farm PV units. The attachment acts like a rear-mounted mowing deck with three available cut sizes of 1.40m, 1.83m and 1.93m, with the addition of side shift to position the head well under a PV unit, utilising a swing-out head. This swingout head features a sensor to move it back out of the way when it reaches any part of the frame structure. To explain how the cut width works out, an AFLR1800, for example, cuts 1.4m with the swing out head in, 1.76 with it out, plus the facility to move the whole unit laterally 1.6m. There are two larger units – the AFLR2300 [1.83 to 2.39 with 2.33m sideshift] and the AFLR2500 [1.93 to 2.56 with 2.49 sideshift]. Tel 01789 488450 www.st-mach.com

Significantly improved productivity
Uttlesford District Council’s decision to opt for Toro’s LT-F3000 flail when the need arose for a new grounds mower to tackle the area’s parks and open spaces is one that has made a significant difference to productivity and efficiency. The LT-F3000 is expected to maintain 760,000 square metres of parkland and open spaces per month. Steve King, Uttlesford’s street services supervisor says “We’ve been using the flail for two weeks now and it’s already having a notable impact on efficiency. We’re finding the LT-F3000 is capable of achieving the same
amount of work that we would otherwise have to bring three dedicated mowers in for. This level of versatility in one mower has significantly improved the team’s productivity rate. “Our previous machine’s cutting width was 1.7m, but the new mower has a 2.12m cutting width, which has enabled us to cut down on operating times. We’ve also found that the flail’s three cutting units follow the contours of the ground better than our former single unit machine, resulting in a superb after-cut appearance.” www.reesinkturfcare.co.uk

irrigation
The power of deep aeration
Lack of rainfall to date across many parts of the country has resulted in grass areas on the golf course, sports pitches, parks, amenity areas and domestic gardens being in real danger of drying out. Watering will help in the short term but water shortages could add to the problem. Conversely, recent heavy downpours on compacted grass areas can leave standing water, rendering them unusable and stopping play. Often, the very action of normal aeration, use of machines and foot traffic leaves areas compacted and panning occurs, creating areas where drainage is poor, and oxygen and nutrients do not reach the grass roots. Terrain Aeration has been providing a long-term solution to this for over twenty five years and the process actually dates back to the nineteen-seventies. One-metre deep penetration using the Terralift machine not only relieves compaction, it is also the vehicle for injecting water and nutrient storing polymers and dried seaweed. The whole process has a beneficial effect that lasts many years – some golf courses treated over fifteen years ago for example, have only recently asked for return visits to renew the treatment. It works like this. The Terralift hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil using a JCB road breaker gun (this is because the ground is usually so compact at depth that it needs this hammer to break through). Once the probe has reached one metre depth, compressed air is released up to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi), the Terralift being the only
64
www.landscapermagazine.com
machine using such high air pressure, which is needed to fracture and fissure the soil. On the tail end of the air blast, dried seaweed is injected which sticks to the walls of the fractures and fissures and, over time, expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil - similar to “breathing” underground. Incorporated with the dried seaweed is the water storing polymer, such as Broadleaf P4 which is a high performance, long lasting hydrophilic (water and nutrient storing). This polymer will swell with water enabling the roots to take it up (rather than the polymer taking it from the roots). As it is a polymer it will continue to work within the soil structure for many years - so helping with better use of irrigation water and addressing drought conditions. The 1½” probe holes created by the Terralift machine are backfilled with aggregate to provide a semi permanent aeration/ventilation shaft, helping to keep the whole aeration process working. The top 1” should be topped with the usual top dressing to encourage grass growth over the probe holes. The probe is withdrawn and the process repeated using two-metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern - this means that each shot interconnects with the previous ones. The Terrain Aeration process is ecologically sound, there is no mess and once the green, tee or pitch has been given a light mow it’s ready for play to resume. Synthetic Success at Bloxham School Tom Hall, deputy head groundsman at Bloxham School in Oxfordshire has reported excellent results from using SISIS equipment to maintain the school’s two synthetic sports surfaces. With a rich history that can be traced as far back as 1853, Bloxham School is a prime example of great British public schooling. The independent co-educational and boarding school, covers approximately 60 acres of land in the picturesque village of Bloxham and over 400 pupils attend the illustrious school. Standards are extremely high, as you would expect at a school of Bloxham’s stature, and equally impressive are the first-class sports facilities. Sport plays a significant role in Bloxham life and the school has enjoyed great success in sports such as rugby, hockey and cricket – to name but a few. As well as a plethora of grass sports pitches, Bloxham also features two synthetic surfaces, and to maintain these; the grounds team relies on a range of SISIS equipment. “Here at Bloxham, one of the synthetic surfaces is sand filled and the other is sand dressed. the surfaces for hockey, but during the summer, we also have tennis, and in some circumstances we use it for cricket.” “We use two pieces of SISIS equipment to maintain our synthetic surfaces - the SSS1000 Sweeper and the SISIS Twinplay Implement Frame, complete with a straight and zig-zag Brush.” The SISIS SSS1000 is a tractor mounted sweeper which can be pulled by any machine. There are no tools required for the adjustment of the brush or the angle of the draw bar and to make storage easy the draw bar lifts to an upright position. With an aluminium hopper with stainless steel mesh, any infill that is collected when using the machine is returned back down to the surface leaving it free from contamination of debris. “I am really impressed with the SSS1000,” says Tom. “Before we had it, we used to manually clean the synthetic surfaces using blowers, hand-held brushes and bags. At Bloxham we have a problem with ash seed falling onto the synthetic surfaces, and this is one of the main reasons we bought the SSS1000. Now we have it, it makes the job a lot quicker and it allows us to spend time on other tasks. We tend to use the sweeper before games and generally once a week just to pick up any organic foliage.” The SISIS Twinplay tractor mounted implement frame can be fitted with several attachments for the maintenance of synthetic surfaces and Tom chooses to attach the SISIS straight brush and the SISIS zig-zag brush – which he claims “do exactly what they are supposed to.” “We use the brushes at least three times a week and we use them to relieve compaction within the pile and to evenly disperse the sand over the surface of the pitch,” he added. Synonymous with exceptionally dependable, durable equipment and an excellent after sales service, SISIS is the brand most groundsmen are turning to for all their synthetic turf maintenance – and Tom claims he wouldn’t hesitate to
late news recommend the products. “If SISIS is mentioned to me I think of high quality products that do the exact job they have been designed to do. We’ve never had any issues with them and they perform the tasks excellently that we require here at Bloxham.”
“I would recommend SISIS equipment to anyone maintaining synthetic surfaces, purely because they’re reliable and top performing products.” 01332 824 777 www.sisis.com

Keeping Britain moving This is the title of this year’s Amenity Forum conference and the programme announced promises to be as topical and relevant as ever. This major conference has very much become the must attend event for all involved or having an interest in weed, pest and disease control matters in amenity. It also can appeal to a wider audience for those just wanting to understand more about this important and diverse sector. The conference will be held on Thursday, October 12th, at the Pirelli Stadium, Burton on Trent. The title ‘Keeping Britain Moving’ has been chosen to align with the Forum’s ongoing and very successful campaign to communicate to the wider public the important and essential nature of weed, pest and disease management and why it impacts upon every UK citizen. The opening session of the conference will commence

with a policy update from Grant Stark from the Chemicals Regulation Department of HSE. This will be followed by two topical presentations focussing upon the challenges of keeping our cities and trains moving. These will be presented by John Parker, Transport for London, and Tony Saunders from JSD Research & Development. There will then be a session chaired by Dr. Ruth Mann from STRI entitled ‘Taking a more holistic approach to weed, pest & disease control’. This will include presentations from Andrew Kerr, a former spray operator of the year winner, and well versed in the demands of managing golf courses and their surrounds . There will also be contributions from David Cary, Executive Director of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association, as well as Dr Colin Mumford from Bayer who will focus on scientific innovations and developments in weed, pest and disease control. Later there will be emphasis on what the future for weed, pest and disease management really looks at with thoughts from Mark De Ath from Headland Amenity, and Peter Corbett from Rigby Taylor. This will also include contributions from Barry Hunt on glyphosate – past, present and future, and a presentation by Professor Alan Gange from Royal Holloway University of London, who will report on recent research relating to biological control methods for Himalayan Balsam. Delegates will also hear from John Ledwidge, Head groundsman at Leicester City, a pitch regarded as one of the best in the Premier League. To round matters off, we will hear about the interim results of the recent amenity survey and it is hoped that a member of the Colins’s family will be present at the event giving his opinion on all matters amenity. Strength to strength Brett Landscaping has introduced Stamford Ultra, the latest edition to the patio paving range Stamford, after seeing a sustained increase in demand from its customers for something different which would set it apart from a conventional riven finish. The classic Stamford economy wet-cast concrete flag paving range, with its simple riven styling, offers exceptional value when it comes to creating paths, patios and utility areas around the home. Each flag has a sharp edge detail that looks great when laid with narrow joints and maximizes the speed and ease of installation – all of which has made it a popular choice with merchants, contractors and DIY enthusiasts alike. Now for 2017 this range will now be augmented by Stamford Ultra which adds more variety than ever before. The gently rippled texture of Stamford Ultra provides a completely different aesthetic to the range giving customers a fantastic alternative to the riven surface of regular Stamford paving. Stamford Ultra is available in single size packs of 450x450mm flags covering 13.54 m2 in a choice of three colours: Natural, Buff and Charcoal, providing a range of options for your next landscaping project. www.brettpaving.co.uk

Cycling safety Colourful directional figures made of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME now point out a safe route to school for children in Billund, Denmark. The figures are part of a wider health initiative in the municipality that hopes to make children more active. As part of the initiative, the Billund area is looking to make it safer to cycle to school. The beginning of this process involved the planning department harnessing the creativity of 200 children from three schools in Billund who submitted 75 ideas to improve the current cycling routes. “It has been an amazing journey to get to this point”, says Susanne Borgvardt Jensen, team leader at Park & Road, Billund Municipality, “We believe that the children have a key role to play in how we design our new cities and bring with them a unique insight into how we can improve, especially when it comes to something as important as protecting their safety.” www.meditetricoya.com

Quarry Garden
Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has supported the Institute of Quarrying by donating quality commercial flag paving and kerbs to the largest show garden that featured at the inaugural RHS Chatsworth Flower Show. To mark its centenary, the Institute of Quarrying entered the ‘Quarry Garden’ which celebrates the essential role of quarrying and mineral extraction in modern life. 600mm x 600mm EcoPave Textured flag paving in Grey Fleck has been used throughout the garden. This sustainable product, containing 50% recycled or reclaimed materials, incorporates uniquely formulated Cornish aggregates to optimise performance, durability and the aesthetic appeal of granite. In addition, Eco Countryside Kerb served as the garden edging and likewise replicates the look of natural granite. Being manufactured here in the UK from 82% recycled or reclaimed material content, it boasts excellent environmental benefits and is highly durable. This means that the garden, which will be reconstructed at the National Memorial Arboretum following the show, will retain its premium finish for the long term once in situ at its new home in Staffordshire. Mike Davies, Sector Marketing Manager for Charcon, comments: “We feel very privileged to have been involved in this project at it makes a very positive statement about the quarrying of today and how the land is protected and preserved throughout the extraction process. “It was a tremendous result to learn that the judges had responded so well to the concept and finished result, awarding it three awards. The team at Charcon can’t wait to see the garden installed as a permanent fixture within the National Memorial Arboretum, where the quality and durability of our products will truly stand the test of time.” www.charcon.com

Greenhouse Gardening Nostalgia Hartley Botanic, the RHS’ recommended aluminium greenhouse and glasshouse supplier, was awarded a 5 star tradestand award for its exhibit at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show. The Lancashire manufacturer and its design partner, landscape and garden maintenance company Base Squared, battled the elements to create a stand which delivers a comforting dose of greenhouse gardening nostalgia. The stand featured five of Hartley Botanic’s handmade greenhouses and glasshouses (including a vintage structure from the 1950s) planted with key, historic greenhouse gardening themes including timeless ‘grow your own’ and Victorian plant collecting, all unified with a classic English cottage garden feel. The award follows Hartley Botanic’s 5 star tradestand award at RHS Chelsea Flower Show last week. Timeless ‘Grow Your Own’ A white Hartley Botanic Victorian Villa glasshouse with external cold frames is rammed full of different types of edible plants including tomatoes, salad leaves, peas, broad beans, cucumbers, peppers, chillies as well as citrus fruits. Victorian plant collecting A Hartley Planthouse and Grange greenhouse both evoke the golden age of plant hunting, filled with the dramatic and exotic species which would have been top of the list for Victorian plant collectors. The white Planthouse is styled as a tropical, Victorian hot house with a focus on fresh green and variegated plants which include palms, acer, fatsia and japonica.
Traditional, English cottage garden external plantings Each of the greenhouses on show sit within plantings reminiscent of a traditional, English cottage garden in sympathy to the look and style of Chatsworth House. Relaxed, country-style plants combine with locally sourced stones in colour tones sympathetic with the house itself. Hartley Botanic’s Grow & Store As well as its 3 themed greenhouses and historic structure, the Hartley Botanic tradestand also featured its practical Grow & Store greenhouse model - a compact horticultural structure perfect for smaller gardens with a versatile storage shed. Tom Barry, Managing Director of Hartley Botanic told The Landscaper, “We are thrilled about our second 5 star tradestand award this year. As well as making their gardening dreams a practical reality, owning a Hartley Botanic greenhouse or glasshouse adds a real, nostalgic warmth to our customers’ lives. Customers often remember enjoying a greenhouse or glasshouse with their parents or grandparents, and as the longevity of our 1950s model shows, they will likely be able to pass this down to their own children or grandchildren. Our greenhouses, particularly those in the more classic styles, also remind some customers of a romantic, bygone era when gardening was an even greater part of everyday living and perhaps more treasured as a pastime. There is a palpable charm about owning a greenhouse or glasshouse and we wanted to capitalise on this through our nostalgic stand.” www.hartley-botanic.co.uk or call 01457 819 155 for more information.

Medal success for Capel Manor College Capel Manor College was awarded a silver medal for its exhibit COMPOST ENERGY LIGHT at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show (see page 83). Garden, domestic and agricultural waste are valuable commodities and College’s exhibit uses three zones to demonstrate how technology and science are used to transform waste into compost and the light plants need - creating the perfect recycling process. Capel Manor College also enables its student to transform their lives through the acquisition of skills and knowledge. This exhibit has been designed by two ex-students to help them establish their garden design businesses. The three “zones” explore: • Composting of waste material

THE
LANDSCAPER
By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe
I am a beautiful young woman. I have a great figure, a degree in Media Studies and fantastic dress sense. There is something wrong. I should be collecting shoes. I used to dream about walking into the offices wearing a pair of Jimmy Choo Sage 100 Pumps (£550). Even though on my salary this was always a distant fantasy. The offices of Horticulture Week are just down the road. I sat in a coffee bar opposite their plush offices and confirm they all look very well healed. The offices of The Landscaper have been operating efficiently without a hint of chaos whilst our great leader has been testing Pimms at flower shows all over Europe. He calls in every now and then complaining about the pressure and to top up his expense account. I was starting to feel a smidgen of sympathy for him until a picture was posted on social media of him driving a Rolls Royce accompanied by two ladies half his age and weight. Almost half (49%) of Britons did not know what secateurs were, according to research of 2,007 UK adults by Grono. co.uk, a leading UK supplier of artificial lawns published in the Great Outdoors 98
www.landscapermagazine.com
OUR GREAT LEADER WEARING HIS JEREMY CORBYN JACKET
IQ Test. More than a third (37%) of UK adults could not identify a trowel when quizzed on common items of gardening equipment, while 42% were unable to identify a garden hoe. 44% were unsure what a propagator would be used for indicating that Britons are not growing and nurturing their own plants from seed. The research also unearthed 46% now employ a landscaper/gardener to look after their green spaces. Oh well the 46% will keep us busy. I’m off to Italy for a few days … Arrivederci. tabitha@landscapermagazine.com
