Capability Brown’s ambitious masterpiece

The Blenheim Estate has more than 2,000 acres of woodland, park, Formal Gardens, meadows and lakes which are home to a huge diversity of wildlife. A recent survey of just one section of its ancient oak woodland revealed more than 120 listed or notable species. These included otters, badgers, water voles, three different types of bat, osprey, red kites, lizards, great crested newts, grass snakes, adders and stag beetles. Among more than 30 different types of birds identified were snipe, kingfishers, terns, spotted flycatchers, bramblings, sandpipers, swifts and swallows. The parkland, much of which has remained virtually undisturbed for centuries, is also home to one of the largest concentrations of ancient oak trees anywhere in Europe – the oldest specimen is believed to date back to before the

Norman Conquest in 1066. The Great Lake and Queen Pool, which were created by Capability Brown in the 18th century are a vital staging post for many migratory birds as well as being a permanent base for herons, grebes, ducks, geese and swans. The grounds also provide the perfect habitat for dozens of increasingly rare wild flowers along with thousands of native and more exotic trees and shrubs; many of them planted as part of Capability Brown’s hugely ambitious re-designs. Closer to the Palace for the plant and flower lovers there’s the majestic Water Terraces, the Duke’s Private Italian Garden, the tranquil Secret Garden, with all of its hidden treasures, the new Churchill Memorial Garden and the beautifully delicate Rose Garden. www.treasurehouses.co.uk

Biodiversity to Bermondsey The construction of the Bermondsey Dive Under, a new railway junction to the east of London Bridge station, has increased biodiversity in the urban area of Bermondsey by 113%, winning the team a coveted CEEQUAL ‘Excellent’ award of 96.6%. The Thameslink Programme, part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan, is committed to increasing net positive biodiversity on its projects. Prior to the beginning of construction in 2012, the Bermondsey site had limited botanical diversity and low conservation value; it was scattered with the previous tenant’s debris and the soil was heavily contaminated with asbestos, Japanese Knotweed and hydrocarbons.

6

www.landscapermagazine.com

The project removed over 21,900 tonnes of contaminated material and eradicated the Japanese Knotweed. To increase biodiversity, wildflower planting and green walls were installed to offset vegetation lost in the process of removing the contaminated soils. The project installed 765m2 of green walls under arches and access ramps and planted wildflowers on the railway embankments to create green corridors and stepping stones to the wider area, leaving a fantastic legacy both environmentally and aesthetically for the local community. The team also carried out extensive community engagement, including upgrading the garden in the Lewisham Community Centre.

Connecting buildings with nature BRE have launched The Biophilic Office – a groundbreaking office refurbishment project that will provide quantified evidence on the benefits of biophilic design on health, well-being and productivity of office occupants. The project centres on a 650m2 1980s office building on the BRE campus in Watford, which will be refurbished according to biophilic design principles. BRE are partnering with architect and interior designer Oliver Heath, who will lead on the design element of the refurbished building. “The project will show how quantified improvements in productivity and wellness can bring rewards for landlords, occupiers, developers and all those concerned with the office and wider built environment” says Ed Suttie, Research Director at BRE. “Researchers will carry out a baseline year of prerefurbishment and a year of post-refurbishment monitoring, evaluating the office environment for daylight, lighting, indoor air quality, acoustic, thermal and humidity comfort.

Office occupants will undergo confidential health evaluations, and sign up to a series of online questionnaires and surveys. They will use wearable technology to monitor key health metrics.” This comprehensive and long-term study is unique in terms of scale and data capture. It will provide a firm foundation for guidance and adoption of measures in the facilities management and refurbishment sectors to promote health and wellbeing in offices. www.bregroup.com

The 18-hole parkland course on Harpenden Common in Hertfordshire features a mixture of mature woodland and gorse. The club has used a Trilo SG400 vacuum sweeper to deal with the substantial leaf fall for many years now, but the introduction of a scarifying unit has changed the dynamics, says Head Greenkeeper Sean Brocklehurst. “The hundreds of trees we have which line the fairways and other areas means that every autumn we have a huge problem with leaves” explains Sean. Prior to the Trilo’s delivery leaves would be blown into large heaps and vacuumed into a trailer – a two or three man job. “We knew we needed a multifunctional unit to speed up the process so looked at a number of machines, but the SG400 ticked all of our boxes. www.trilo.com

moving vehicle • 18% of the fatalities were due to people falling from a height • 15% of the fatalities were due to people being struck by a moving object Other causes of workplace fatalities in the UK during 2016/17 include contact with moving machinery, contact with electricity, being trapped by something collapsing or overturning, amongst a number of other reasons. Despite overall health and safety at work constantly improving over time, there are still a number of precautions for employers to take in order to protect their workforce and prevent injuries, accidents and fatalities. Gary Ellis from CE Safety believes there are a variety of steps to follow in order to avoid harm to employees on a day-to-day basis: “Employers and employees need to prioritise health and safety regulations on a daily basis, as a general part of their job responsibilities. Certain industries are more prone to accidents, injuries and fatalities, and high-risk sectors must understand that health and safety at work is more than just being legally compliant.

One workplace fatality every 2.5 days According to recent statistics released by HSE, there were 137 workers killed at work in the UK in 2016/17. Despite workplace fatalities being on a constant decline in numbers over the past 30 years, due to overall health and safety regulations being improved across all sectors, the most recent statistics highlight the fact that there are still improvements to be made. With 137 workers being killed in the UK in one year, this means there is approximately one workplace fatality every 2.5 days. The statistics released by the HSE found that: • 72% of the workplace fatalities in 2016/17 were people aged between 16 and 59 • 23% of the fatalities were due to people being struck by a

Andy Jackson, grounds manager at Stoke City FC, has reported ‘phenomenal’ results since incorporating a machine from SISIS. The SISIS Osca is a tractor mounted powered oscillating brush with a 1.9 meter working width and is equally effective when used on synthetic turf with sand or rubber infill. The two oscillating brushes stand the carpet fibres up and redistributes the infill evenly, minimising compaction on the surface and improving its performance – giving consistent playing characteristics while preventing pile damage caused by reduced infill levels. A contributory factor to the reduction of compaction is that the Osca’s working width will use fewer passes than other more conventional drag brushes to complete a pitch. Its aggressive brushing action agitates the upper infill level of the surface from side to side as well as brushing forward, helping reduce surface compaction and encourage the fibres to stand up straight which reduces the risk of Harrowden_Landscaper_Jun16_Layout 1 14/06/2016 11:33 Page 1

Mediterranean Garden The granddaughter of award-winning plantswoman Beth Chatto has opened Writtle University College’s new Mediterranean Garden. Julia Boulton, who is Director of the Beth Chatto Gardens, cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony to the garden, a stunning new feature in front of the University College’s Main Building in Writtle, near Chelmsford. The event, on 29 June, was part of the University College’s first ever Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) awards ceremony, which was attended by more than 50 students and their families. Julia gave out the awards to the students, who have completed the work on the new Mediterranean garden which has taken three years to finish. It was designed by RHS tutor Christine Lavelle whose design was inspired by the planting in Beth Chatto’s gravel garden in Elmstead Market, near Colchester; RHS Garden Hyde Hall, near Chelmsford; as well as the Cambridge Botanical Gardens. Christine said: “I was very pleased that Julia could open this new garden for us, which, like the Beth Chatto Gardens, demonstrates how plants that enjoy dry conditions can be grown together to create a dramatic landscape. “The garden has gravel pathways which meander through the scheme, with rocks or trees providing

Driving the distance for dementia

HMP Kirkham prison officer Andy Maxfield from Inskip in Lancashire is finalising plans to set a brand new Guinness World Record by driving from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a John Deere lawn tractor, while raising money for Alzheimer’s Society. The ‘Driving the Distance for Dementia’ Challenge is now due to set off from John O’Groats at 8am on Tuesday 25th July 2017; the signposted distance to Land’s End is 874 miles. The planned route goes past the Maxfield family home, where Andy spends much of his spare time cutting the grass in public open spaces around the village. Andy Maxfield will now be using a 24hp X750 lawn tractor and accompanied by support vehicles provided by John Deere. The X750 has power steering, cruise control and a top road speed of around 10mph, and it will

be specially equipped with John Deere’s JDLink remote monitoring system to help provide evidence of the completed journey to Guinness World Records. Andy will also be supported on the journey by his wife Karen and their daughters Kathryn and Kaitlyn. Andy’s 77 year old father James and James’ mother Theresa were both diagnosed with dementia, which prompted Andy to start seriously fundraising for the charity in January this year. “Initially I had the idea of a fundraising ball to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society, which will be held in Preston in December,” he says. Alzheimer’s Society is available for anyone affected by dementia and there are lots of ways the charity can help – for details call the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122 or visit www.alzheimers.org.uk

Education Partnership Sparsholt College has joined forces with Marshalls, to further strengthen its horticulture and landscaping courses. The Marshalls’ Education Partnership, will provide additional expertise and resource to further enhance students’ learning experience and help develop industry links to boost career opportunities. Marshalls has a long-term strategy to support students undertaking landscaping and horticulture courses. The Education Partnership further promotes the benefits of a landscaping career to help address the increasing demand for trained professionals in the industry and will link Sparsholt students with Marshalls Register members in order to gain work experience in the industry. Commenting on the partnership Sparsholt College Principal, Tim Jackson said: “We already have an incredible team here delivering first class horticulture and landscaping courses and our students are all snapped-up into good professional roles and it is disappointing to tell some employers that we have no more completing students to fill their vacancies. We would like to encourage more young people to consider a career in the many aspects of horticulture. This agreement with Marshalls will further enhance the student experience and we hope will also encourage other young and not so young people to consider a rewarding and varied career in landscape and design where there are some well-paid roles available and a shortage of new entrants. Marshalls will not only be there to support our teaching team, but will also provide expert masterclasses and a suite of their renowned landscape materials for our college. The links to the Marshalls Register will also be invaluable to our students looking to develop their professional careers”. David Jessop, Operations Manager of the Marshalls Register said: “Working in partnership with colleges to promote landscaping as an attractive career choice felt like a natural progression for Marshalls. There is a shortage of skilled new entrants to the landscaping sector, but demand for their services is higher than ever before. We want to encourage students to pursue a career in this wonderful industry, and instil best practice from the outset.” www.sparsholt.ac.uk

Parks and Green Spaces – at a tipping point This month hundreds of communities across the UK came together to celebrate the UK’s parks and green spaces as part of Fields in Trust’s Have a Field Day campaign. Thousands of people joined a movement of park users championing the spaces that are so special to them. The events were as varied as the parks that hosted them, from small picnics amongst neighbours to large community festivals with thousands in attendance. After the busy weekend, the long awaited Ordnance Survey green space map was launched. This now makes it far easier for people to locate parks and green spaces by using the new database and interactive digital map, identifying accessible recreational and leisure greenspace in Great Britain. Universities and Science Minister, Jo Johnson, said: “Green spaces are a vital part of our landscape and this new database and an online map will make it easier for people across the country to access green spaces and lead healthier lives”.

Last week also saw the confirmation of Marcus Jones as Parks Minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government. He will find in his in-tray an outstanding job of responding to last year’s Parliamentary Inquiry into the Future of Public Parks. In the Inquiry Report, parks were identified as at a tipping point. Fields in Trust submission to last year’s Parks Inquiry called for a change in the way public green space is conceived, not simply as a drain on spending that requires a considerable amount of money to maintain - but rather as an asset which can be deployed to achieve longer-term savings and happier, healthier more connected communities. Fields in Trust Ambassador, author Bill Bryson said: “Britain has the comeliest, most enchanting, abundant and often venerable parks and green spaces of any country I know. Wherever you are, you are never more than a few minutes from woods, greensward and fresh air. How splendid is that? I am delighted to see them celebrated by Fields in Trust.”

Classen cuts it with Royal St. George’s

Royal St. Georges occupies a unique place in the history of golf being the first venue, in 1894, where the Open Championship was played outside Scotland. Ranked as one of the leading courses in the world, the club has also hosted the British P.G.A. Championship, the Walker Cup and many more, with an illustrious list of names who have won championships there including Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros. Today’s course is presided over by Paul Larsen, Course Manager and Head Greenkeeper whose team has been working with a Classen Pro Hydro-drive Sod Cutter over the past twelve months. The machine, supplied by Lister Wilder in Ashford, was in constant use throughout the winter, stripping turf around bunkers, stripping tees and getting turf off the club’s own turf nursery to replace and renovate. So far they have covered the work around twenty-one bunkers and two tees, stripping a thousand square metres in the process. Chosen by Paul’s mechanic, who had used a Classen machine before, the Sod Cutter is regarded as an essential tool in the winter renovation projects. “We like it because it’s easy to use,” says Paul, “it’s very manoeuvrable, especially around the bunkers without losing control. The cut is very clean and smooth, there’s not much

vibration, which means it’s safe to use for longer periods and it has been totally reliable.” The combination of the vibration dampening elastomeric isolators and integrated finger-throttle clutch control are what make the Classen Hydro Sod Cutter easier to handle. The vibration dampening system reduces machine vibration at the operator by up to 40%, while the hydrostatic drive delivers a smooth, consistent power flow with infinitely varied transport speeds up to 4.7mph. The power-reverse feature makes it easier to load and unload, and easier to manoeuvre. The blade placed at the centre of the machine ensures a more consistent cutting depth and the cutting blade makes twenty cutting strokes per second/twelve hundred per minute to yield those cleaner, smoother results. “Without it we can’t do any of the bunkers,” Paul says, “you could say it’s an essential part of our armoury, it’s precisely what we need and really does the job.” The unique design of the Classen Sod Cutter lets you switch back and forth from a 12”, 18”, 20” or 24” cut in a matter of minutes with optional blade assemblies, and the machine comes with a two-year professional warranty. 2,500 new job opportunities

International property and construction consultancy, Gleeds, has been appointed as project and cost manager on Formal Investments’ Rectory Farm development in Hounslow. The ambitious scheme, which has been recommended for approval by the local council this week, will see vast quantities of minerals extracted from beneath the surface of a 110 acre area of disused land close to Heathrow Airport. The deep subterranean space created as a result will subsequently be converted to house around 175,000sq metres of warehouse and storage space. Above ground, plans include provision for the creation of the largest new park in West London for more than 100 years. In addition to open spaces and woodlands, the park will give local residents access to a host of other amenities, including: a multi-use games area, cricket nets, football and hockey pitches, community gardens, a running track, tennis

courts and an outdoor amphitheatre and concert pavilion. The complex works will be phased over a seven to ten year period, with the first part of the park opening to the public as little as 12 months after the ‘sealed top-down’ construction programme begins. It is anticipated that the scheme could generate as many as 2,500 new job opportunities during the build and beyond. Richard Steer, Chairman of Gleeds Worldwide, said: “The huge reserve of gravel concealed below ground at Rectory Farm is much needed for the construction of London’s schools, hospitals, roads and homes so I am delighted that recommendation for approval has now been granted. This is a truly pioneering project which is going to completely transform the area for both businesses and residents, who will benefit from a fantastic public park and a considerable boost to the economy of Hounslow.” www.gleeds.com

South West England: Innovative, creative, and adaptable The South West England region embraces Cornwall, Cotswolds, Devon, Dorset, Exeter, Gloucester, Somerset, and Wiltshire. Major urban conurbations include Bath, Bristol and Bournemouth. Ffion Llwyd-Jones reports

S

outh West region opportunities, challenges and projects are as diverse as the landscape. While projects range from gardens featuring work by local artists and craftspeople, to water features, barn conversions, and miles-long cliff restoration, the region’s challenges include finding and training skilled employees, and adjusting business plans to a wider audience – reflected in the new amenity and landscape section at the South West Growers Show.

BOOMING BUSINESS ‘Business is good,’ comments Andy Dean of Bath-based BlueSky Landscapes. ‘I think the landscaping business is booming in the Bath/Bristol areas where I work. We’ve recently got our name out there more in the Bristol area, and the phone is ringing all the time!’ The company aims to achieve an innovative, practical and healthy garden space. ‘In some ways, we’re a victim of our success,’ adds Andy. ‘I started my career as a gardener, and was then self-taught in

both build and design. We had so many enquiries, that for the past few years, I’ve ‘came off the tools’ and built other people’s designs.’

The teams thoroughly enjoy ‘owning’ a project from start to finish Sylvan Studio’s garden designer Christine Whatley is also able to pick and choose the projects she wants to work on: ‘I’ve got far more work than a few years back. It tends to be more in the Somerset area now, too, as opposed to Hampshire and those areas.’ She adds that as she works throughout the South East and Home Counties, her clients range from people developing/redeveloping the garden, to a complete revamp. ‘People seem more confident in taking things on,’ she adds. ‘They’re becoming enthused by the televised gardening programmes.’

untold delay.’ For Janet Raynor-Jones of Create Landscaping in Devon, rainfall creates drainage challenges, along with careful selection of plants. ‘We select plants to suit the soil type and local conditions,’ she explains. ‘We’ve also had a few drainage problems to deal with. This area can get a lot of rainfall at times. The extent of drainage problems vary from simply adding more sand to the soil to having to create a French drain for the excess water to drain away.’ And regional erosion can also create challenges for demanding environmental improvement projects. As Jon Woolven, with Devon-based Tony Benger Landscaping explains: ‘We were under subcontract for Lyme Regis Environmental Improvements Phase IV, (total value approximately £815,00), and work included controlled Sylvan Studio: Somerset garden, with work by local artists and craftspeople

COST EFFECTIVE One of the region’s challenges is the cost of travel. As Richard Stone, Director of Wiltshire-based Bawden Managed Landscapes comments: ‘The South West is such a rural area that it’s quite a way to travel between areas, and that creates challenges in efficiencies and being cost effective. Traffic can be also be a challenge, especially in the summer, when the roads get chocked up with holiday traffic, which creates

INVESTMENT AND FLEXIBILITY Johnstone Landscapes’ Tessa Johnstone comments on how the company recognises the need to invest in the workforce: ‘Most of our staff have been with the company since leaving school – and two of them are about to turn 30. We focus on providing a solid skill set, and empowering people to improve plants’ and species’ knowledge. As they acquire more skills and certificates, in turn it helps the business.’ She adds: ‘As part of the Government funded Local Enterprise Programme and via the Wiltshire Business Support Service, we were awarded a small sum to fund three sessions with a business mentor. These funds are available across the country – but you have to look hard to find them!’ Janet notes the need for a flexible marketing focus when Create Landscaping works alongside the house builders on new developments: ‘We aim to make the gardens an extension of the property, and make them more marketable by showing their potential through the show arena gardens. The whole area of a new development is landscaped to give a welcoming feel to the site and create more kerb appeal.’ Tessa comments that the Johnstone Landscapes team enjoys alternative ways of working, recognizing the need

for business flexibility. One such project occurred when designer Roderick Griffin approached the company to implement his abstract and stylised design of a Japanese water garden at a manor house in Wiltshire. Tessa comments: ‘The teams thoroughly enjoy ‘owning’ a project from start to finish. We asked them to dig deep with the sheer physical demands of building the Japanese garden, involving the redirecting of a water course and moving a substantial amount of rock by hand. To grow in size, and in knowledge and skill sets, working in more collaborative ways really strengthens each team member’s profile as well as the company.’

Gardens evolve when they’ve been planned and planted properly And success means a new location for Tony Benger Landscaping. As Jon explains: ‘With 10% growth year on year for the past few years, we’ve outgrown the premises (office, yard and nursery) so we’re moving to a nearby site,

to continue to expand the business. Including offices, new yards, areas for direct sales to trade and customers, and a larger nursery for cultivation and growing of own stock.’

EVOLVING FOCUS Business demands are continually evolving and changing. Reflecting the extended business scope across the commercial horticulture sector, the Devon-based South West Growers Show (in October) includes a dedicated amenity and landscape section. It is the only trade event in the region aimed at growers and plant buyers from local authorities, garden centres, retail outlets and the landscaping industry. The landscape and amenity section

We aim to make the gardens an extension of the property broadens the appeal to a wider audience. Richard comments that Bawden is broadening its focus to working with ecologists and environmentalists: ‘We’re getting in earlier on new developments; we do

And Tessa comments on projects in the region’s large private residences: ‘The houses are often owned by young families wanting to make their mark on historic houses by updating the garden. The projects are led by the children’s age and the client’s knowledge. We work with them to find the right solution for their imagination.’ Creativity – returning to his creative roots – is also the changing focus for Andy. ‘I wasn’t where I wanted to be. I wanted to build gardens to my own designs – get back to my roots, and be more creative. So that’s where we are now.’ He adds: ‘We’ve worked on the BBC’s Garden Rescue programme, with Charlie Dimmock and award-winning garden designers the Rich brothers. And we’ve been asked to come back again. So business is good!’ The South West region’s challenges and diverse opportunities are matched by creative industry professionals who understand business priorities. As Tessa Johnstone comments: ‘We do not take for granted that the next project will just come along – we now actively seek different projects to challenge us and the team, and meet the changing times.’

advice: dealing with complaints

Stay grounded Every business is likely to receive a complaint about the goods or services it provides at some point, no matter the efforts put into pleasing its customers. It may be a simple misunderstanding that can easily be rectified but if it’s something more serious, you may see it as an unjustified attack on your reputation or perhaps a tactic employed to avoid or delay payment. People commonly take complaints personally but issues occur when they choose to defend their business by confronting the complainant, without considering the consequences. GEMMA CARSON sets out the best course of action.

prove effective. Involving more collaborative methods of dispute resolution, including mediation, conciliation and negotiation, it can deliver better outcomes than the traditional adjudicated court proceedings or arbitration. Other significant benefits of early intervention often include: • Swifter resolution of disputes. • A significant reduction in costs compared to traditional court proceedings. • More flexible and commercially-focused resolutions to disputes. • Parties may be able to preserve working/commercial relationships. • A confidential resolution process which can be beneficial and made obligatory. • Can often be used in conjunction with other methods of dispute resolution when needed.

People often react badly to a complaint, but sending an irate email or arguing the case over the phone can prove costly for the business. Where emotions are involved, it often sparks heated debates over the rights and wrongs, or actions and inactions of one party or another, which can see matters escalate quickly. Real problems arise when allegations or threats to take certain steps are made, without due consideration given to the terms originally agreed when the two parties entered a commercial relationship. Plenty can be done to reduce the risk of the situation getting out of hand, which should start with giving careful consideration to the content of the complaint. You may feel pressured to respond but resist the urge to make any commitments or threats. Wait until you have calmed down before sending a response as e-mails written impulsively tend to backfire, especially once a complaint has become a dispute. Clarify whether a service agreement and/or a contract exists between the parties. If there is an agreement in place, it’s important to check it thoroughly to determine what it contains; there may be relevant contractual terms you can refer to which may help to manage the situation.

TIME TO SEE A PROFESSIONAL? A serious legal dispute doesn’t need to materialise before seeking legal advice. Lawyers do not have to take an active role in the issue but they can offer dispute resolution advice, which is very effective when given soon after the complaint is received. The most important legal factor to consider is that making a rash statement, or hastily deciding to stop providing your services or products, may cause a serious breach of contract. At the very least you risk a serious argument, or a threat of injunctive proceedings. More worryingly, a breach of contract can entitle the party affected by it to terminate the contract and bring legal proceedings against you for damages. So, think twice before sending that inflammatory e-mail; it could be a huge mistake that ends up costing time and money, both of which could be better spent managing or growing the business. Should legal proceedings seem the only option, choose to work with experienced lawyers who not only understand commercial disputes, but also demonstrate a commitment to reaching an early, commercial and cost-effective resolution.

THE MATTER WON’T SETTLE ITSELF It is important to be proactive when dealing with a complaint as the issue is unlikely to resolve itself. Dealing with a complaint as soon as it emerges can often prevent it from evolving into a bigger problem. Face-to-face meetings can often help resolve issues before they escalate or if it appears to be more serious, do not make contact before you have sought legal advice. Collate all relevant information relating to the complaint, such as documents, correspondence and any products or specimen products from the same batch. Also, retain proof whenever an inspection of equipment or machinery is carried out. EARLY INTERVENTION CAN HELP When a dispute cannot be resolved easily, early intervention can

lighting

LIGHTING FAQ Exhibiting at several shows such as ‘Glee’ NEC, ‘The Landscape Show’ Battersea, and ‘Futurescape’ at Sandown Park Racecourse, we are often asked common questions regarding Garden lighting, as Martin Bennett reports

I have listed 3 of the more frequent questions and our best responses. 1. What type of lights are the most reliable and durable ? Answer: Without doubt the most reliable lights are 12v. These can easily be a DIY installation with or without “Plug and Play” connections. All that is required is an external mains socket, plug in the 12v transformer and the rest is simple, just remember never to connect the blue and brown wires together! 12v installations are much more damp tolerant than mains and will rarely trip electrics whilst only a slight amount of moisture can cause 240v lights to trip. Sometimes, the idea of experimenting with lights to see their effect in the dark, worries some people as they think this will always involve unsafe exposed cable and perhaps a professional that they will have to pay for, however with 12v lights, trial and error is a DIY task and so simple! Once the light is connected as previously mentioned, an extension lead can help with viewing the effects in the desired areas of the garden. The most durable are without doubt Brass and 316 stainless steel types. Outdoor lighting crafted from solid brass is naturally robust and can have an antique ‘rustic bronze’ finish which will blend in beautifully with the colours and textures of natural surroundings.

36

www.landscapermagazine.com

2. How can I prevent condensation occurring on my spike light glass lenses? Answer: All air contains some water vapour. Warm air can hold more water than cold air. The worst situation is warm air in a damp climate as occurs especially in the north west of England. Hence Cotton mills were sited in Lancashire as the moist air prevents the cotton breaking whilst weaving. Condensation occurs when warm air meets a cold surface. An external garden spike spotlight or in- ground light will often have condensation on the inside of the glass lens in the morning where the warmer air inside the light has come in contact with the lens that has been cooled during the night. This condensation will dry out during the day as the outside air heats, however it can drip down onto the wiring below and cause the electrics to trip especially if 240v. The way to deal with this is to make sure the fitting is airtight (replace the rubber seal

lighting

if necessary) and wipe off the condensation first thing in the morning and then the air inside the light will be the morning colder air with less moisture. Silica gel packs will also absorb excess moisture inside the light. 3. What is the best way to up-light trees. Answer: It all depends on the size of the tree and whether it is Evergreen or Deciduous. For large deciduous trees such as Oak and Beech it is best to site large floodlights both directly under the canopy, and at distance, directed at 45 degrees to light the total tree. This will mean both the trunk (especially in winter) and the upper leaves and branches are illuminated. For evergreen smaller trees such

as Olives, Holly, and Small Pines , Spike spotlights are recommended. Place two, one at either side as viewed from the front and angle upwards to light the underside of the branches and leaves. The light will be reflected from the leaves and look amazing. For smaller deciduous trees such as Figs, Apple and other fruit trees, in-ground lights placed midway under the canopy can be very effective. As with most questions surrounding garden lighting, there is usually a simple, professional solution easily obtained from any good quality supplier. First UK robotic pilot Edinburgh and Regents Park in London. Each lawnmower will be equipped with wirelesslyconnected sensors, operate come rain or shine and collect data about the environment, the quality of air, water and levels of light and sound and illustrate how robotic lawnmowers improve overall park maintenance.

Husqvarna has launched an international robotic pilot to improve productivity and sustainability in parks across the country – a first for the UK. The trial, which is working in conjunction with Quantified Planet, will take place in Edinburgh and London over the next five months, and will provide both cities with a more efficient, high-tech and sustainable solution to maintaining its green spaces. As part of the project, Husqvarna Automower robotic lawnmowers have been installed in various locations across each city, including Princes Street in

38

www.landscapermagazine.com

The data will be collected by Quantified Planet, using a cellular connection and a digital cloud. This will help each city better understand its microclimates, the impact of air pollution and how the use of battery-operated lawnmowers could reduce carbon emissions. Amongst the benefits of the new lawnmowers are increased efficiency – allowing each city to concentrate on horticultural activities elsewhere, improved safety on steep grass verges and a positive impact on the environment thanks to battery operation. Husqvarna UK Professional Manager, Kevin Ashmore said: “One of the biggest roadblocks to reach the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is the lack of data. Cities, like Edinburgh and London need better environmental data to improve health and create cities people want to live in. The aim of this project is to help cities around the world support this mission. “The technology used allows us to monitor the impact and after the first stage of the trial we will be able to measure, through the sensors, the total impact on the environment.” The project measures the environmental gains and potential time savings of mowing public lawns with robotic lawnmowers. The test will measure the reduction of noise pollution as well as direct emissions when replacing petrol powered products with battery driven robotics. FUTURE URBAN PARKS In a report about future urban parks , 71% of landscaping students from 15 countries said that they believe that parks will take up more urban space than today, with the biggest increase coming from new smaller parks and pop-up parks. 47% of the students said that robots and drones will be an important part of park maintenance by the year 2030.

Spiderman Pip Turley is the proprietor of PT Landscapes, based at Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire. For the past 20 years he has been responsible for the groundscare of Howard Tenens premises in the southwest of England. He explains the reasons behind the purchase of this particular mower.

agrigarden machines

“Many of the properties in the Howard Tenens portfolio are sunken below the original ground level to mitigate their impact on the surrounding area,” he said. “This results in many grassed banks and slopes that have to be maintained. I’ve always used brushcutters to keep the grass banks presentable, but this was becoming ever-more time consuming as Tenen’s opened more facilities in the southwest, so I needed a solution that would reduce the time and enable me to focus on other areas. “I put a proposal to Howard Tenens and they contacted TH WHITE Machinery Imports, who came down with a selection of machines for me to demo. I’d already discounted tracked vehicles as they have a tendency to tear the turf, so when I saw the Spider, I was literally, blown away; it’s an amazing piece of kit! One bank at Tenen’s depot in Sharpness used to take between 3-4 days to cut with brushcutters; now it takes less than a day. “That’s a massive improvement in productivity and the finish is much cleaner. Not to mention the health and safety aspects – significantly reduced noise pollution during operation, no hand/arm vibration issues and no awkward standing on slopes with excess strain on hip, knee and ankle joints. Also no possibility of roll-over accidents, if using ride-on machines. This machine has the ‘WOW’ factor and, as I said earlier, it’s a truly amazing bit of kit and one that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to other contractors.” www.spider-cz.com

The Walker advantage

A recent two year study in the US in the landscaper and contractor market, on commercial mowing reported typical productivity savings on average of 20%-25%. The study conducted by manufacturer Walker Mowers compared four of their different mower styles against popular competitive machines. Four properties were selected to represent the diversity of daily commercial mowing and a total of 18 competitive machines were used during the two years. The performance of each machine was compared with a number of key elements that improve overall productivity whilst maintaining the quality of cut and appearance of the lawns. The areas reviewed and monitored included, steering, balance, manoeuvrability and trimming capabilities - out of the seven different criteria that an operator can measure both for effectiveness and productivity. The results concluded that contrary to popular thinking the highest ground speed does not mean higher productivity. Landscapers and Contractors interested in seeing for themselves the typical savings they can expect to make, can visit the website, www.thewalkeradvantage.com/calculator and take part in the two step productivity calculator. Secondly the site invites the contractor to select the mower most comparable to the one used, or would like compared to a Walker Mower, many top competitive brands are included. Instantly the result is calculated, showing the percentage of productivity increase, the weekly time saved, typical annual increased revenue throughout the year and the increase in revenue the contractor can expect during the anticipated number of years the machine is kept. Although the results are calculated in US$’s, the productivity savings are nonetheless still impressive for operators looking for an improvement in their overall profitability. This study coincides with a recent announcement of the opening of, Walker Mowers UK Ltd, a new business to further develop the machines advantage, enhance the after sales support and experience and demonstrate to contractors the savings that can be made when using a Walker Mower. A spokesman for the company has announced that they will be exhibiting at the SALTEX Exhibition (November 1-2 at the NEC, Birmingham) and look forward to meeting both existing and new customers on their stand E010. www.walkermowersuk.co.uk

Treating Chafer Grubs

New low drift nozzles ICL has announced that all bottles of ProShield – a barrier acting, pre and post-emergent non-selective herbicide, are now being supplied with low drift sprayer nozzles. As part of the new product authorisation, which has been officially registered by the Chemicals Regulation Division

Chafer grubs are soil-dwelling larvae of chafer beetles. Depending on the species of chafer they either feed on decaying plant material or plant roots. Evidence of their activities can be seen in a number of ways. Between autumn and spring the damage is most noticeable, as grubs are at this point reaching maturing. You may notice yellow patches on your lawn, and you may see secondary signs of damage from birds, badgers and foxes, who tear up the turf in feed on the grubs beneath. Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer is a safe and effective way to deal with a chafer grub infestation, which can only be treated using biological methods. Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer is a natural product containing microscopic worms (nematodes) which seek out and kill chafer grubs, but is still safe to use around children, pets and wildlife. Nematodes attack the pest by entering natural body openings, releasing a bacteria which quickly and safely kills it. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey. Follow these tips to make sure that you get the most out your nematodes: • Apply nematodes August to October, before the soil gets too cold and when the young grub larvae are active. • Mix the Nemasys with water (following the pack instruction) and apply immediately using a watering can or hose, to already moist lawns, when the soil temperature is above 12 degrees centigrade. • Straight after application, water the grass well so that the nematodes are washed into the soil where the chafer grubs will be. • Keep the lawn well-watered for at least two weeks after application.

(CRD), ProShield will now come with two low drift sprayer nozzles as well as a stewardship checklist attached. The newly authorised bottles are registered through to 2020 and any individuals who possess old label stock will have until 31st March 2018 to use them up. Many turf and landscape professionals have been benefitting from ProShield for a number of years now. Rainfast in one hour and providing rapid knockdown, one application is all that is needed. It is renowned for killing a range of problematic weeds and its barrier action prevents germination for up to six months while protecting against re-growth on gravel and soft surfaces. Although a huge success to date, Mark Pyrah - Landscape and Industrial Business Development Manager for ICL Turf & Landscape in UK and Ireland, believes that the new nozzles will have an even greater impact. “With these new low drift sprayer nozzles, the operator will notice an immediate improvement,” he says. “The product will only affect the targeted area with minimized chemical drift. Not only will it make the task more effective but you are essentially getting more out of the product because there will be significantly less wastage. “In such uncertain times in which a number of products are being removed from the market, it is vital that updates such as these are made to the packaging. At ICL we champion best practice and are always looking to make improvements that are in line with current legislation, to enhance an individual’s operations.” Professor John Moverley OBE, chairman of the Amenity Forum, also voiced his support. “As an independent organisation, the Amenity Forum fully supports product stewardship and the importance of choosing the correct nozzle so that the product is applied exactly where needed for effective and economic impact,” he said. ProShield has an ultra-low dose rate of 4.5 litres/ha and its water-based, non-solvent formulation is classed as nonhazard and non-irritant to the operator. It can be applied with a knapsack sprayer and the new universal nozzles can be attached to existing equipment. www.icl-sf.co.uk

golf

On course With the sun high in the air and more golfers out on the course than at any other time of the year, summer is a spectacular time to be a golf greenkeeper. Karl Hansell reports

KARL HANSELL GOLF EDITOR BIGGA is the national association for golf greenkeepers, with almost 6,000 members from all over the country. Each year we host the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition in Harrogate during January, and we work to educate the nation’s golf greenkeepers, while also ensuring their needs are represented in the corridors of power across the golfing world. This column will provide more insight into the latest developments within the greenkeeping profession. During summer it’s hard work keeping on top of all the regular maintenance, but largely your attention can turn to polishing your course, thanks to the hard work you’ve put in over winter and during the early part of the year. Summer is also the time for BIGGA members who wish to gain more experience on major events to get themselves away from their course and enjoy the perks of being part of an international members’ association. This month, as the world’s top golfers stroll the fairways of Royal Birkdale during The Open, a small, dedicated team of greenkeepers will follow each and every match. Their role is simply to stay out of the way and rake bunkers should the golfers hit their ball into a trap. It’s a small but vital role and each year The R&A turns to BIGGA members for help. The same occurs at the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and the British Masters, this year to be held at Close House, and the fact BIGGA members are entrusted with these duties are a fantastic example of the high regard our members are held in across the industry. The same can not always be said of club golfers, however, as some have a tendency to overlook the efforts of their greenkeeping team. That’s OK though – if you pick up your clubs once a week for a knock around your local track you’re not expected to know the intricacies of the game and what

48

www.landscapermagazine.com

goes into preparing a course each day. That’s where greenkeepers need to help themselves, and communication is a vital part of the process. I recently visited a BIGGA member in Northern Ireland who was only a couple of months into his new role as Course Manager of a prestigious club. One of the first things he did was organise a meeting for his club committee to come down to the sheds and have a look around, and it’s proved incredibly benficial in developing a positive relationship. Greenkeepers face increasing problems due to the loss of products such as carbendazim and chlorpyrifos and it has been widely discussed around the industry as to whether golfers will soon have to face lower standards out on the course. Sustainability is certainly on the increase, but a shifting approach to course maintenance means greenkeepers need to be prepared to be more open to communicating with members than they have been in the past. karl@bigga.co.uk www.bigga.org.uk

The Barbarian Shifting over 8,000 units in 2016, the Mitsubishi L200 was last year's second most popular pickup with its range-topping Barbarian spec leading the sales. Combining competitive pricing with low running costs, the L200 is very affordable when compared with similarly specced rivals, but can it match them in terms of performance? Liam Campbell reports LIAM CAMPBELL AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR CAB AND INTERIOR The interior of the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian is one of the most comfortable and luxurious in the pickup sector. The cab is the longest in the class which provides plenty of legroom for front and rear occupants, and the low, sloping bonnet and low sitting windows provides great all-round vision. Comfort was clearly a priority for the designers of the L200 and the six-way adjustable driver seat is fitted with soft cushions and is one of the most relaxing that we’ve tested. Standard features on the Barbarian include keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, cruise-control with speed limiter, reversing camera with sensors, blue ‘Barbarian’ LED lights in the foot well and a seven-inch touchscreen display with steering-mounted controls and Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary connectivity.

MITSUBISHI L200 ENGINE AND DRIVING CHARACTERISTICS Mitsubishi replaced the ageing 2.5-litre engine of the previous generation with a new 2.4-litre engine, which is more powerful and efficient. Barbarian models come with the more powerful 178hp output (there is also a 151hp output), which produces up to 420Nm at 2,500rpm. The engine is coupled to either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. The L200 is quite quick off the mark and can reach 62mph from standstill in just 10.4 seconds. The engine is quiet, although at speed, road noise starts to build up. Cornering isn’t as pleasant as that of its competitors as the steering is vague and there’s a lot of oversteer. MITSUBISHI L200 OFF ROAD Off the road is a different story, however. The

motoring

Mitsubishi L200 is one of the best pickups in terms of off-roading capabilities due to and comprehensive four-wheel drive system with four settings (2Hi, 4Hi, 4Low and 4Low with locking rear differential), its broad axle articulation and its lightweight structure, which makes it surprisingly nimble. The chassis sits quite low, so the ground clearance (205mm), approach (30 degrees), departure (22 degrees) and ramp over angles (24 degrees) are quite disappointing. There are, however, a lot of cutting edge off-road features like hill start assist and the Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (MAST-C) system with brake assist. LOAD AREA AND TOWING In terms of practicality, the L200 is pretty poor. The load area is one of the smallest of any double cabs measuring 1,470mm wide by 1,470mm long by 475mm high, while the payload is rated at 1,050kg. At 3.1 tonnes, the towing capacity also falls short of its rivals but the L200 is still capable of carrying up to 990kg in the load area while towing the full amount, whereas it can be as little as 200kg on the rivals.

The running costs of the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian are one of the lowest in the sector THE VERDICT The Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian has a lot to offer; has a spacious cab, great visibility, tight turning circle, its quick off the mark and is great off-road, although it isn’t the most practical and the ride isn’t great. Priced at £24,299 plus VAT (£25,699 plus VAT for the automatic), the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian is far more affordable than most of its top spec rivals and represents great value for money considering its long list of features.

COST OF OWNERSHIP The running costs of the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian are one of the lowest in the sector, with impressive fuel consumption of 42.8mpg combined (official NEDC figures) and a long and a five-year warranty (although it is capped at 62,500 miles). The service intervals are also fairly limited at 12,500 miles or every year.

Threats to London’s trees “Imagine London without its magnificent trees and the stark brutality of the remaining landscape if they were to disappear due to lack of professional care and the threat posed by pests and diseases” is the clarion call from Stewart Wardrop, chief executive of the Arboricultural Association, ahead of its presentation to the All-Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group (APPGHG The Association recently completed a survey of UK tree of ficers. The aim was to assess the impact local authority funding constraints are having on the standard of tree care and the ability of tree of ficers to fulfil their rôles. There are 418 principal councils in the United Kingdom. Of the 163 responses, 83 per cent of tree of ficers considered ongoing cutbacks had adversely af fected their ability to do their job well. As regards the causes of this negative impact, 72 per cent felt a combination of reduced staf f capacity and reduced support functions, such as administration and enforcement, had the greatest af fect. Tree of ficers were also concerned that reduced training budgets and continued professional development (CPD) were having a detrimental af fect on their ability to carry out

their work ef fectively. This erosion results in an increasing number of local authorities having a lack of professional and impartial expertise at their disposal. The keynote presentation was given by John Parker, chair of the London Tree Of ficers Association, on the vital rôle of local authority tree of ficers, as highlighted in ‘Trees in Towns II’, a study commissioned and published by the Department for Communities and Local Government, which recommended that every council should have a tree of ficer. Parliamentarians attending the event close to the Palace of Westminster learnt from the Association’s chairman and director of Barcham Trees Keith Sacre how the many benefits urban trees bring are now under threat, and how members of both houses can help the trees’ plight. Sacre was joined by Dr Katherine Deeks, biosecurity of ficer at Forestry Commission England, to outline the natural threats posed to trees and the strategy which can be employed to defeat such pests and diseases. The morning also included a practical tree climbing demonstration by Josephine Hedger, an arboricultural contractor, trainer and three-times world tree climbing champion.

Globe-Trotting In a year which has already seen him inspec ting trees in South Africa and making presentations at the Arboriculture Australia Conference held in Canberra, Barcham Trees’ Keith Sacre will once again be representing the Cambridgeshire nurser y on an international stage. Sales direc tor Sacre will at tend the International Societ y of Arboriculture’s Annual International Conference and Trade Show to be held in Washington DC from 28 July to 2 August 2017. Whilst in the United States, he will also hold a meeting with members of the USDA Forest Ser vice, which administers more than 150 national forests.

The annual event of fers a forum for the exchange of information with others in the arboricultural profession, and a series of educational sessions with industr y leaders worldwide. The latest trends in equipment, prac tice, technology and research in arboriculture and urban forestr y will all be on the Washington agenda. “ To my mind, this is the most impor tant and useful assembly of arborists, urban foresters, researchers and educators, and is therefore an event Barcham cannot miss”, says Sacre. keith@barchamtrees.co.uk

Quicker and environmentally friendly

Set in the heart of East Sussex is the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club. Woodland management plays a key part in their maintenance regime, as does the new GreenMech Eco 150 TMP they have recently purchased. Maintained by Chris Mitchell and his team of 10 greens staff, this 1888 established, two 18-hole heathland course, has embarked on the Countryside Higher Level Stewardship programme with Natural England. Chris, who’s been at Royal Ashdown for 44 years, explains, “As participants in the Natural England scheme, we’re embarking on a tree clearance project to try and return areas back to natural heathland with an eventual aim of a 60% open heather and 40% tree split. However, our old gravity feed chipper just wasn’t up to the job with the variety and quantity of material we were having to process it. We asked Alan Pierce at our local GreenMech dealership for advice and he suggested we consider the Eco 150 TMP. Having trusted Alan’s judgement for a number of years we went for it and certainly haven’t been disappointed – it’s streets above

our previous model.” The tractor mounted Eco 150 is designed to fit the 3-point linkage of compact tractors up to 45hp and can take material of up to 150mm in diameter easily in its stride. At Royal Ashdown the chipper has been faced with large pine, birch, ash and oak trees, as well as crab apple trees which most chippers can’t handle. “The Eco 150 TMP deals with crab apple an absolute treat – it really is impressive. I’m also impressed with the GreenMech Disc Blade system, though sceptical at first. I was familiar with straight blades but these are a great idea; when you get a bit of a dull edge you can just turn them round. 18 months on from the purchase of the chipper, we’re still using the original set of disc blades. We’re all delighted with the machine, it’s easy to use and powerful enough to cope with whatever we feed through it. Not only is chipping a quicker and more environmentally friendly method of disposing of the waste, the resultant chip produced is recycled and re-used on bridle paths around the course.” www.greenmech.co.uk

Medallion turf volcanos erupting with lava of roses were created by designer Tony Smith, as a show feature for the entrance to the rose pavilion at this year’s Hampton Court Flower Show. Through sponsorship of this feature Rolawn continues its support and presence at the show. With supply to 15 other designers, contractors and exhibitors who collectively won eight RHS medals and a plethora of trade stand awards, it has been another excellent result for the Yorkshire based company. The pinnacle was Martyn Wilson winning gold for his garden ‘Brownfield Metamorphosis’ which explored how nature can flourish in post-industrial areas. Rolawn’s Sales and Marketing Director, Jonathan Hill told The Landscaper, ‘It is fantastic to see how our clients, both new to us this year and those we have worked with repeatedly have used our products to such great effect. The Medallion turf stands out at the show, having rooted quickly and demonstrated its superb growing characteristics. The gardens planted in our Blended Loam growing media similarly illustrate how much plants love its structure and effectiveness. My congratulations to all our clients. www.rolawn.co.uk

Smart solutions

The Berg-Nielsen family have just completed their designed private terrace on Malmya island, close to Oslo, Norway using Kebony, a wood recommended by leading architects. The terrace is divided into three sections providing a comfortable lounge area, a place to enjoy meals and an outdoor kitchen; in addition the terrace includes secret trapdoors to provide storage. This terrace will act as an aesthetic and functional extension of the house - crucial for the family’s sociable lifestyle - surrounding the house and with the Oslo fjord as a backdrop. For creative effect, the owners decided to play with the lines of the terrace boards to develop an elegant and eye-catching pattern where the boards connect. Adding to the overall design with smart solutions, the Berg-Nielsen family have skilfully incorporated an element of storage through the use of trapdoors, which are hidden within the terrace for storing outdoor cushions and a range of garden products. The terrace also included a Kebony pergola with built-in electricity which is mounted on casters and can therefore be moved around the terrace.

Kebony is highly resistant to wear and weathering and subsequently a fitting choice for the terrace and pergola. Although a natural material, the wood requires no maintenance beyond normal cleaning and can stand up to testing conditions far better than untreated softwood. Over time, the wooden terrace has developed a silver-grey patina, which complements the surrounding natural landscape and provides a graceful contrast to the simple white façade of the property. Developed in Norway, the patented Kebony technology uses an environmentally friendly process, which permanently enhances the properties of sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid derived from agricultural crop waste. By polymerising the wood’s cell walls, the wood gains greatly improved durability and dimensional stability, giving it characteristics similar to those of tropical hardwood. Kebony only uses raw materials from FSC®-certified, sustainably managed forests, and carries the Nordic ecolabel called “Swan” as it is completely safe. www.kebony.com

A coating for all seasons

Summer additions

Sikkens Wood Coatings provide a special one-pot coating product which is highly protective against the damaging effects of UV light and moisture. Its transparent film deluges and fills the pores in the wood with the Saturator-Effekt and therefore increases its durability. Flaking of the coating does not occur. The Self Stratifying binder used in CETOL WF 771 is modularly based: The first component ensures good adhesion to the substrate; the second component offers very good protection against UV light and moisture. This low build, low sheen translucent system is especially suitable for medium to highly exposed wood surfaces such as outdoor decks, garden furniture, roof soffits and cladding. The ‘Never Ending Impressions’ colour collection, designed especially for CETOL WF 771 offers a wide spectrum of intensive colours and harmoniously balanced colour tones. www.sikkens.com

Natural Paving Products has announced a new addition to its high quality artificial grass range, Luxigraze, as well as three new additions to its Vitripiazza porcelain paving collection. Adding to its range of high-end Italian vitrified porcelain products, the company has added Anno Grigio, Anno Grafite and Anno Biscotto, which together form the new Anno ‘Trade’ range. Like the rest of the Vitripiazza range, the three new products offer natural beauty, with wonderful shade variations and are available in 600mm x 600mm single sizes. This product range is aimed at the design-focused customer who desires a quality product at an affordable price; Vitripiazza is one of the highest quality porcelain product on the market. The stone is highly durable and resistant to attack from moss, mould, salt and pesticides. What’s more, the flagstones are frost-proof, virtually nonabsorbent as well as being easy to clean. Natural Paving Products has also added a new 30mm luxury artificial grass product to its Luxigraze range. Luxigraze 30 Luxury is a dense, soft product designed to provide a beautiful realistic looking lawn created with soft, yet hardwearing yarn the product delivers a natural texture with a luxurious feel. This makes it particularly suitable for children to play on as well as being pet friendly. Manufactured in Europe with high quality latex backing, Luxigraze 30 Luxury has met ISO 9001 certification. The product has been crafted from field green and apple green polyethylene monofilament mixed with tan and chocolate brown polyethylene texturised root zone. The new addition means Natural Paving Products now offers five variations of Luxigraze. Each of the products offers different depths and thicknesses, designed for beautiful, low maintenance gardens. To get the most out of the product Natural Paving Products also supplies a range of accessories. These have been designed to aid installation and on going maintenance including a super strong adhesive, a specially constructed jointing tape, U-pins as well as two artificial grass-cleaning products; a cleanser and a spot cleaner. www.naturalpaving.co.uk

Protecting wooden structures Protecting wooden structures with traditional wood protection liquids can be a time consuming and labour intensive task to undertake. Before you can even begin to apply wood stains or wood protection liquids plenty of preparatory work has to be carried out. Often, if timber has previously been treated, stained or painted, these varnishes need to first of all be stripped back to reveal the bare wooden surface. In any case, before an application of wood protection liquids can begin, wooden surfaces have to thoroughly be cleaned and dried, which can involve the use of fungicidal washes and biocides. In some cases it may even be necessary to additionally pre-treat timber with appropriate wood preservers to prevent rot and decay. Finally, after all the preparatory work has been completed, the wood protection liquid or wood stain can be applied. Instead of repeating this strenuous task year after year wooden structures can now be protected for 10+ years with just a single coat. The new Roxil Wood Protection Cream from Safeguard Europe weatherproofs wooden surfaces, whilst retaining their natural appearance and allowing them to age naturally. With just a single coat the water uptake of timber is reduced, which results in an improved resistance to warping, reduced mould and algae growth and neater looking timber constructions. Best of all Roxil has to only be applied once. The cream formula enables a dripless, precise application with brush or roller – no pre-treatments necessary. Simply clean the surface, apply Roxil and wait for it to absorb into the substrate. www.safeguardeurope.com

“This fencing brings peace and quiet plus privacy back to gardens subjected to unwanted noise,” says Nicola Simpson, head of marketing for Forest Garden. “Winning the GIMA Garden Landscaping category at our first attempt in years is a reflection of the uniqueness and innovative design of this product. It offers an affordable and ready to use solution to reducing noise pollution.” This is the first affordable acoustic panel, readily available at national retailers and can be fitted as a replacement between existing fence posts or as a new fence. Tests show that the panels can achieve a reduction noise levels by as much as 30dB. Each successive reduction of 10 decibels is equal to halving the noise level. Each panel is 180cm high and 183cm wide with the boards mounted vertically (making it a standard 6ft panel size). However, the panel looks equally as attractive with the boards running horizontally with which arrangement it is 180cm wide so can replace standard sized European panels. The panels have been tested in independent laboratory tests carried out in 2017 by Exova BM Trada in accordance with BS EN ISO 10140-2 and ISO 717-1. Achieving BS EN 17932:2012 Category B3 rating for noise reduction. www.forestgarden.co.uk

Award-Winning Fencing Panel Forest Garden’s Decibel Noise Reduction Fence Panels have scooped Best Garden Landscaping Product prize at the GIMA Awards 2017. Invaluable to students Sparsholt College has joined forces with Marshalls, the UK’s leading hard landscaping manufacture to further strengthen its horticulture and landscaping courses. The Marshalls’ Education Partnership, launched today, will provide additional expertise and resource to further enhance students’ learning experience and help develop industry links to boost career opportunities. We would like to encourage more young people to consider a career in the many aspects of

72

horticulture. As part of the Education Partnership, Marshalls has also committed to provide teaching materials such as specifications, drawings and videos; the opportunities for students to visit Marshalls’ factory and production facilities to gain a better understanding of how hard landscaping materials are produced; support for internal college landscaping competitions and work experience opportunities with Marshalls’ installers. We want to encourage students to pursue a career in this wonderful industry, and instil best practice from the outset.” www.sparsholt.ac.uk/opendays/

660 Free Trees There are 12 different species available, which include hawthorn, bird cherry, wild cherry, whitebeam, crab apple, rowan, lime, tulip tree, Italian cypress, black mulberry, strawberry tree and yew. David Shreeve, Director of The Conservation Foundation, said: “A fifth of the capital is already covered by trees but some parts of London are short of greenery. Churches can play an important role in helping to make their area look and feel better by working with their communities to plant trees. All the trees available will benefit London’s landscape and atmosphere as well as support the capital’s pollinators.” People are able to select the species they want to plant and request any number of trees – availability permitting. To take part in the project and receive free bee-friendly trees, please complete a short registration form via www.conservationfoundation.co.uk/trees/

Wyevale Nurseries has been chosen to supply 660 beefriendly trees to the Trees for Sacred Spaces initiative. The firm has been picked by The Conservation Foundation to provide the trees to be planted in London church yards later on in the year. Andy Congera, Amenity & Landscape Sales Manager at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We are so pleased to be supporting this initiative. We will be providing 12 different species to the project, which is also supported by the Church of England and the Mayor of London. “The initiative is for churches in a London borough, and in the diocese of Southwark, London, Chelmsford or Rochester. Churches can help to green the capital. The trees will improve air quality and the health of London’s population and the environment, as well as supporting bees by providing pollen, nectar or resin. “There are 660 free trees up for grabs so enough for every church in London to plant. The trees can be planted in a churchyard or they can be donated to a school, community group or other faith organisation.” The free trees will be available between late October and late November 2017 as part of The Conservation Foundation’s Trees for Sacred Spaces project.

Bolder and brighter This year, visitors to Glee will find a bigger, fresher and bolder Glee – full of innovative feature content, tangible business advice and the strongest collection of brands ready and willing to forge relationships with retailers. Matthew Mein, Glee’s Event Director, said: “Glee 2017 is the start of an exciting new chapter for the show. We’ll still be offering the core elements that are the main reason why retailers attend, but we’re also building additional content that will add real value, and provide our visitors with inspiration and valuable advice that will help them to future proof their businesses. All of this will be underpinned by our new look, that we believe is demonstrative of the changes that our industry is undertaking, through adopting more innovative and contemporary approaches to retailing. “We are confident that the changes we have made means that Glee is now, more than ever, an event for all aspects of garden retailing – from sourcing new products, to gathering information on how to tap into a younger consumer demographic, inspirational merchandising advice, futurefacing business concepts and the freshest trend information. Glee is an event for everyone from the category buyers to the chief executives. We guarantee that a day at Glee is a day

horticulture well spent.” Matthew added: “Glee is in great shape – in fact, the 2017 event will be the strongest showcase we’ve been able to offer for some years. We have reached maximum capacity, and are on track to deliver over 550 exciting brands, including 150 international suppliers, as well a wealth of new and lapsed brands. Look out for thousands of new product launches, including tomorrow’s bestsellers, today. It’s fair to say that this year’s Glee exhibition is set to be one of the most exciting showcases of garden retail and outdoor living brands, products and added value content anywhere in the UK.”

National Garden Gift Card The National Garden Gift Card, from the HTA, won the best Garden Clothing and Gifts category at the GIMA Awards. The National Garden Gift Card allows HTA member garden retailers to both sell and redeem instore. The card drives increased footfall to garden centres and increases basket value, as recipients and purchasers often spend more instore

than the face value of the gift card. Its many benefits include: Improved cash flow – retailers only pay when they sell or accept payment with a card Making it easier for members to get enough stock in advance of the main gifting occasions like Mothers’ Day and Christmas when cash flow tends to be low Less administration and postage costs for garden centres compared with paper vouchers as no requirement to send back accepted vouchers for payment Easier to merchandise instore with very attractive designs and display stands and as cards have no value until activated at the till they can be displayed anywhere instore. Commenting on the Award Martin Simmons, HTA Director of Operations said, “We are delighted that the National Garden Gift Card has been recognised in this way with this award in this hotly contested category. It’s one of many improvements we’re making to our gifting schemes ensure they work as hard as possible for the industry. With retailer support the gift card will thrive, driving customers to garden centre stores and adding value to the garden industry for retailers, growers and manufacturers alike.” www.hta.org.uk

THE

LANDSCAPER

By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe

Dearest Fans There was a strong possibility last week that this column, which is read by millions across the world every month, was going to be scrapped. This act of cultural vandalism was on the cards because of an increase of adverts in our semi -display section. After some complicated negotiations which ended suddenly when the leaders remembered they were going out for lunch I have landed up on better quality paper. The BBC have been forced to own up to a massive gender pay gap - but let me tell you, compared to this bunch the BBC management are saints. Our salaries are permanently capped. Whilst our Great Leader’s are galavanting around all the flower shows drinking champagne us girls are confined to barracks. As I’m sure you all know I’m not one to complain – live and let live that’s my motto – but... Last week I was invited to a reception and desperately needed to visit my hairdresser Leonardo de Salmanila – my request for a sub was turned down out of hand. Buster (aged 8) is a member of the firms ruling

Buster – before and after

elite and despite looking kindly and fun loving he is more than capable of nipping members of the staff as they walk past his office basket. If you call his name in certain manner he will respond with a toothy growl. His bite is worst than his bark. So you can imagine my horror when a large van arrives outside the office bearing the name Dogmasters Portable Grooming Service. The malevolent canine was treated to an hour of pampering which included shampoo cut and blow dry pedicure and manicure . The rate for this preferential treatment – around a pound a minute. Would you Adam and Eve it – and I could not get a £20 advance. There are now no plants in our offices. They just won’t live here. Some of them don’t even wait to die, they commit suicide. An escape to Hampton Court therefore to sniff the flowers proved to be an empowering experience which will ensure my creative juices keep flowing. Thank you for all the correspondence, although I have to confirm that the suggestion from Grant in Saffron Waldon is not physically possible. tabitha@landscapermagazine.com

Europlanters Ltd

There are many beautiful parks in London but the one newly created in Merchant Square is the first and only one that floats. This exciting new 730 sqm park has planning permission for 5 years. Transforming an urban area into a green space, a place for people to relax, unwind and enjoy. Comprising of three islands, two of which are connected by a walkway and the other a separate pontoon for wildlife only built to infuse nature into the area by encouraging wild fowl and other ground nesting birds. With the capacity for 120 visitors, residents can enjoy free wifi and purchase coffee and snacks from barges offering a café style facility. The pontoon was built by using modules inter-locking together to make the base of the floating park. Europlanters fitted almost 200 Meters of fibre glass fender to the pontoon. This was not without challenges, as the pontoon was continually moving and uneven at the start. Over 100 planters in RAL 7026 were also installed creating 214 sqm of planting space. It was very difficult fitting the planters to an uneven surface, but the beauty of fibre glass is that it will flex when needed. 58 Meters of Sapele hardwood seats were also fitted to create communal seating areas and 18 sail supports to create shaded areas for people to sit. Two deliveries of soil with a total of 97 Tonne arrived via bags on a canal barge with a high ab crane. Each bag was strategically placed on the pontoon to ensure it remained as level as possible. Divers added further modules in the areas that were holding more weight under guidance of a Marine Engineer and anchored the pontoon down to ensure it stayed in place. ‘Health and safety was very different to our usual site work’ said John Wilkes Director of Europlanters ‘we wore life jackets over our hi-viz and bump hats. All tools needed to be attached with lanyards to ensure that they didn’t fall into the canal.’ The park was opened in May 2017 as part of the Chelsea fringe. Come and see examples from the Europlanters range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

AIPH

Since 1948, AIPH has united horticultural producers in an international community that thrives to this day. Much has changed in that time. Technologies advanced, cities rose from the ground, and we have become more connected than ever. As a result, our essential bond with nature has been weakened. AIPH strives to reignite and uphold an appreciation of plants that we believe is a basic human instinct. We support the work of grower associations globally and together we champion a prosperous industry, growing plants that enhance lives, advance societies and sustain our planet, for this generation and the next. AIPH is committed to being the ‘world’s champion for the power of plants’. The LANDSCAPE Show provides access to the latest ideas and products for greening our world for the future. Ebben Nurseries

As there is less and less space for trees and other plants in urban environments, roofs and façades are often the best way to bring back a natural balance. Firstly, roof gardens create space for greenery in urban areas. Roof gardens and green façades also make a significant contribution to capturing particulates, ecology and reducing the Urban Heat Island effect. Planting on roofs and in containers is becoming increasingly popular. In the urban environment, this is a valuable addition to greenery, with roof and container planting improving the environment. Of course it’s important to make a carefully considered choice for species that lend themselves to use on roofs when making a selection. And matters such as watering systems and substrates also need to be taken directly into account in the planting plan. Almost every type of tree can be planted on roofs and in containers but some types are more suitable than others. Multi-stem trees are the most suitable trees for roofs and containers. The centre of gravity on multistem trees is much lower, due to the weight of the multiple stems. The Ebben Inspyrium shows actual examples of innovative gardens, wall cover and 1,400 m² of roof gardens, on two levels. Examples in which innovative building concepts, substrates used and growing location facilities such as sprinkler systems and aeration facilities for plant locations are used in a functional working environment. Ebben are exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

APL

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) comprises accredited landscape companies who design, build and maintain gardens throughout the UK. The rigorous inspection process to join is the toughest within the industry. Along with the initial inspection, each member is inspected annually to ensure each member has up to date insurances, complies with health and safety law and their quality of work is to the highest possible. The APL is the only landscaping scheme operator of Trustmark, a Government endorsed initiative that promotes professional trades to consumers. Over 330 APL members and representatives from across the landscaping industry came together for the APL Awards held at The Brewery in London in March where the work of members was celebrated in style. Many congratulations to all those award winners. It is not too late to enter this the 2018 Awards as the deadline has been extended to the end of May 2017. Don’t miss out on this opportunity and find out more at www.aplawards.co.uk APL are once again looking forward to being part of the LANDSCAPE Show in September and seeing you there to discuss how you can become part of the APL Community. Lumena Lights Ltd ‘Airlite’ and ‘Litetower’ are cutting-edge additions to Lumena’s extensive path light range. These contemporary designs provide a realistic alternative to heavy duty Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel bollard lights which commercial landscape installers can feel pressured to specify on every project. This can cost more than £500 per bollard, as consumers are often unsure that other materials will be as durable. There is a different way and Lumena have the perfect solution. The new designs are crafted from strong 3mm thick ‘Anodised Aluminium’ - a fantastically weatherproof and non-corrosive material, well-suited to environments susceptible to bad weather or coastal air. The anodisation forms an outer protective layer over a highly polished Aluminium surface which lasts indefinitely and results in a robust, durable bollard. It looks exactly like stainless steel, but costs a fraction of the price. The Airlite’s eye-catching ‘air bubble’ solid crystal glass head gives a unique effect that looks pleasing in daylight and beautiful at night. Once illuminated, it acts as both a standard path light and as an uplighter - if placed beneath trees the effect is amazing! LED GU10 bulbs are accommodated, and using dichroic coloured lenses will create amazing coloured effects. The commercial Litetower has a specially designed head to accommodate LED bulbs from candle size, up to large LED ‘Corn bulbs’ for areas where a very bright light is required. The frosted glass head diffuser softens the light, as well as an internal mirrored reflector. These IP65 lights have various height and mounting options with a 9mm thick fixed base as standard, or root-mount in-ground options. Photocell ‘Dusk to Dawn’ versions are also available for automated security. Come and see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Loknan Architectural

We’re looking forward to seeing Loknan Architectural exhibit at the LANDSCAPE show again this year! In this month’s edition, we thought we would share with you one of their recently completed projects for a slatted screening project at a private house in Sussex. Collaboration with all parties is one of Loknan’s fundamental principles, and working closely with the designer and contractor on this project showed, once again, why this is vital for a project to run smoothly. Initially, the Loknan team liaised with Gail Peel of Nightingale Garden Design to come up with some options of timber species to be used as screening. This was narrowed down to two options, Western Red Cedar and Thermowood (Redwood). To help bring the project in under budget, it was necessary to work with the most cost effective option and consequently, the Thermowood was the species of choice. As the project progressed, the Loknan project team kept in contact with the contractor on site as well as the designer to ensure there were no problems. This proved its importance when arranging delivery and ensuring it worked with the site schedule. At installation stage, the Loknan technical team were on hand to provide necessary advice to ensure the screening was installed correctly, creating a fantastic visual appearance and providing maximum longevity. This was a great project and the Loknan team found collaborating with Gail and the contractor was very enjoyable. When asked about the project, Gail said “It has been a great experience working with Loknan. They have been very helpful, thorough and reliable throughout the process. They were happy to accommodate my requests for different quotes and helped me to fit the budget. In the end I have used Thermowood which looks brilliant in the finished garden. I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone looking for quality products and a reliable service.” Come and talk to Loknan about your next project on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

CIH

Niwaki New to the Niwaki range this summer are the Niwaki Garden Shears, after over 10 years of practical experience Jake Hobson of Niwaki explains the evolution of their latest product - designed to give professional gardeners a long lasting and comfortable shear. “We were looking for the ultimate pair of all-rounders - the perfect shear for general use that was also fine enough for topiary and detailed shaping. The key things to look for in a pair of shears are steel quality and balance. The actual size and length of blades are less important than good balance, as long as they feel good in ones hands. We selected SK carbon steel for the blades, a hard wearing steel that holds its edge well but is tough enough to absorb mistreatment and damage. The handles are formed from Japanese White Oak (Quercus mysrinifolia) known for its strength and durability, with just the right amount of flex to absorb impact. With 195mm blades and a total length of 550mm, these shears come in at the perfect size and weight for hedge cutting, box clipping and topiary, and even cruder tasks like the occasional hack-back job and lawn edging! They come with a heavy duty leather sheath and are easily sharpened for a long life.”

The Chartered Institute of Horticulture is open to any professional within the horticultural industry, from those at the beginning of their education or career, to those already well established within the field. We are the professional voice for horticulture, uniting a growing profession. CIH provides the opportunity to associate with colleagues through technical and social gatherings, through its publications and on its website. Membership of the Institute provides a unifying force that draws together horticulturists who may be pursuing very different career paths and ‘uniting a growing profession’. We also support Grow Careers, an initiative set up to help bring young horticulturists into the industry by helping them explore the options available to them. Our mission is to both increase the number of new entrants into the sector, and inform progression and diversification of careers within the industry. We will be returning to the LANDSCAPE Show this year to take advantage of the networking opportunities with other organisations. The various lectures and seminars have proven to be insightful and informative and with such a varied audience of visitors the event is like no other.

Come and see all of their Niwaki range of gardening tools and accessories for the perfect day’s clipping on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Graham Bodle

The Walker’s Wharf garden is one of Graham Bodle’s most recent success stories; securing him a Gold Medal award and Best Artisan at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Inspired by a project at the side of the river Trent, Graham aimed to create a usable outdoor area from a derelict industrial space. He achieved this through intricate sculptural work, using recycled materials, combined with strategic, understated planting. A colour palette of all shades green was thoughtfully selected to fully engage the viewer and create a sense of tranquility. The key feature in the garden is the disused industrial wharf, detailed with a lichen covered skull and softened by contrasting pines and conifers. A still pool lies below, with a drawbridge inviting you to a relaxing decked area complete with comfortable seating. Heritage is a strong theme in Graham’s work. Established by his grandparents in 1951, Walker’s Nurseries continues to specialise in pines and conifers. Over the years his grandfather won countless awards for his work, including a Gold at Chelsea. Graham is an accomplished landscaper, evidenced by his array of awards and continues to follow in his grandfather’s horticultural footsteps. Graham Bodle is delighted to be a speaker at the LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Register for your free tickets to come and listen by visiting www.landscapeshow.co.uk.

Lux Lawns As one of the UK’s industry renowned artificial grass installers, Lux Lawns are delighted to have developed their own unique range of luxury artificial grass. Premium quality, highly durable, incredibly realistic synthetic turf, quite simply - a grass above the rest® They were recently asked to transform the appearance of a front and rear garden in Derbyshire, adding vibrant colour whilst, importantly, keeping maintenance to a minimum. The customer contacted them as she was unhappy with the look of the existing gravel and found it prone to sliding to unwanted parts of the garden. She had considered artificial grass some years ago but felt it did not provide the look she wanted at the time. Their recent work in the area, however, showed her the realistic result created by their high quality products and uncompromising installation methods. Artificial grass has improved over the years, no longer carrying the stigma associated with astroturf pitches. Lux Lawns luxury grass can be used to transform existing low maintenance areas into beautiful outdoor spaces, proving popular for corporate areas, schools and public houses, providing a more attractive offering than some hard surfaces. Their luxury lawns aren’t only suitable for natural turf replacement, they can also rejuvenate tired decking, brighten up bland patios, add extra appeal to pool sides and roof terraces. They are hard-wearing enough for high demand areas such as dog runs and play areas too. Come and talk to Lux Lawns about their range on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Simon O’Rourke Sculpture We recently caught up with Simon who told us about a recent challenge he had been given. “It’s not every day I get asked to recreate a Pre-Raphaelite painting in wood, but this is the sort of challenge I love! I was approached by Nigel Daly, an Architect who had bought a house in Staffordshire once owned by a Pre-Raphaelite painter named Robert Bateman. The brief was to recreate an angel from one of Bateman’s paintings, “Pool of Bethesda”, to be situated in a specially designed garden that would mimic the painting. The painting was of course two dimensional, with the angel shown in profile from the left. My challenge was to take that view and a large oak tree trunk, and recreate the angel in three dimensions!” Much of the work was done using chainsaws, and any refining with hand tools and power tools and the finished result in conjunction with the beautiful landscaping has created a breath taking scene. The angel really does appear to be stepping down into the water. Simon is an Illustration graduate, turned tree surgeon, turned sculptor. He resides in North Wales and has a workshop near Chester, where he produces wood sculpture of all sizes, and furniture too. He likes to create emotion with his sculptures, and leaving the viewer with a feeling they have just experienced part of a story. He also loves using a machine as violent and brash as the chainsaw to create beauty. The marks it leaves on the wood have an energy of their own, and the exciting textures leave their own stories of the process. Come and talk to him on his stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Cornish Concrete Products Specialising in the design and manufacture of precast concrete products, CCP offer customers a high level of technical advice and design expertise. Understanding that no two projects are the same, they pride themselves in providing innovative, creative, cost effective solutions to exceed their client requirements. Precast concrete elements are becoming ever popular within the hard landscaping sector due to their capabilities to withstand harsh weather conditions. The design and manufacturing possibilities of precast concrete are virtually endless and can be cast in a variety of different shapes and sizes. In a scheme to regenerate a public space area in Southampton Station Quarter, they provided a series of curved precast steps, seating units and planters. Due to the complexity of the project, their design team led early on discussions with the client to ensure ease of manufacture along with an aesthetically pleasing design. During the manufacturing process they utilised steel, timber, GRP and polystyrene forms to create the multitude of different shapes required. All units were manufactured in a white cement based concrete, using blackhill aggregate. The units were finished with a heavy acid etch.

The Garden and Landscape Designers Association (GLDA) is synonymous with professional garden design and is currently celebrating 20 years since its foundation. The association represents some of Ireland’s leading garden and landscape designers in Ireland, and its growing membership provides a wide range of services nationwide. Through its on-going training opportunities in various aspects of design, its practical workshops and field trips, its intelligence gathering network, and most publicly, its highly acclaimed annual international design seminar, the GLDA disseminates new information on methods, techniques and current best practice in landscape design and horticulture, and has created a new demand for improved quality and increased availability of a much wider and more interesting selection of plants. The GLDA has set standards for its members which allow them to stand out from the crowd. In addition, in a profession that can be quite insular, it allows the pooling of ideas and knowledge and a valuable social network. As part of this ever expanding network we are delighted to be involved with the LANDSCAPE Show where we can connect with a wider audience and showcase our design skills. IFLA

Pots of Distinction Pots of Distinction is a renowned supplier of super-sized, traditional and tough, authentic clay pots across the UK, offering a wide range of quality items that complete any garden. Each of their handmade pots has a story behind it, and the Magna Pot is no different. As one of the bigger and simpler pots that they offer, they thought they would share its story. The Magna Pot’s major features are its strength and simplicity. The straight sides of its structure add stability, allowing it to withstand strong winds, while the mix of 3 strong Vietnamese clays makes the pot extremely robust. Each pot has been fired in a traditional wood burning kiln which can reach 1000-1200 degrees centigrade, making the Magna Pot naturally frost-proof and tough enough to survive our cold winter temperatures. Each pot is handmade by skilled craftsmen in Southeast Asia, where they are made from a dense, heavy clay. It is this mix of natural clays that gives the Magna Pot an authentic feel and rustic appearance. Detail has been added around the rim for character. Handcrafted pots are sadly becoming an increasingly rare art form, so Pots of Distinction hope to stock and enjoy these unique pots for as long as possible. They highly recommend them. The size and shape of the Magna Pot in particular allows it to appeal to a wider audience. From a modern contemporary look to a traditional arrangement, this pot wouldn’t look out of place anywhere at all.

Decori

Decori deliver high quality, British manufactured metal artwork for outdoor and indoor use. Their metal screens are becoming increasingly popular due to the versatility they offer. The screens can be free standing which allows them to be used as partitions to create flexible spaces, or fixed with spiked feet to permanently fix. The panels can be used to create a variety of themes within gardens, such as Moroccan, modern minimalist, traditional or Oriental. An example of this is their standard bamboo pattern with an oriental garden. A client recently commissioned Decori to make fixed screening in their garden for privacy. The pattern used was Decori’s Emblem design. These screens were fixed by flat feet with holes and bolted into the client’s decking. These screens offer privacy whilst allowing plenty of light through for a dramatic effect. Decori are able to produce screens in Corten (weathering steel), Stainless Steel and Aluminium and can be painted to any RAL colour. Their products have many applications, including wall art, balustrade panels, balcony screens and even tables, seats and planters. They have a range of standard panels but can also design and manufacture for bespoke projects, and send render images to clients for approval. Come and see them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

ILP

The Institution of Lighting Professionals is an open and collaborative organisation that works proactively with architects, interior designers and specifiers to integrate quality lighting into the built environment. We promote best practice by uniting the skills of engineering, design and technology to deliver great spaces for people. Visit www.theilp.org.uk for more information. We are supporting the LANDSCAPE show because we promote excellence in all forms of lighting one area including lighting landscapes. Our publication ‘Lighting Landscapes’ gives guidance on implementing successful lighting within the public realm. It starts from one basic premise – that public space, is a crucial component of successful, well functioning towns and cities in which people can work, relax and socialise in a harmonious manner. But at the same time, even the best-designed public squares, parks, pedestrian areas and gardens, which may be havens of sociability or serenity by day, can become unprepossessing, and even threatening, places after dark. One major aim of our guide is to inspire those responsible for commissioning and funding to recognise the numerous benefits of good landscape lighting and put such lighting at the centre of the design of new or refurbished urban spaces, parks and gardens. Visit www.theilp.org.uk/resources/ ilp-general-reports/lighting-landscapes/ for more details.

Proludic Ltd

How often do we travel with our children to find somewhere new to play? To discover a playground that has something new, a concept not seen before or equipment unique to its setting, but never find it. Just as fashions and trends change the way we look at technology and design so should they influence play. Architectural form has influenced play by the introduction of asymmetrical play structures. Stainless steel has enhanced the aesthetics bringing a modern fresh feel to play areas, although we need to push the boundaries again and Proludic, innovators in their field have done this by the introduction of Grafic Games. Grafic Games is a bold new concept in the outdoor play equipment industry, combining quality manufacturing with graphic design. It is an opportunity to raise the profile of playgrounds and turn them into a real talking point within the community. The possibility of transforming your play space is endless. Standard themes can be chosen from six differing inspirations. However, the fun begins when you create your own bespoke design whereby any design can be used and printed onto the panels which form the construction of the play sculpture. Art meets play in an inspiring way to add an additional story to any play space. Come and talk to the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) is the leading organisation that represents professional and volunteer groundsmen and women. Founded in 1934 by W H Bowles BEM, Head Groundsman at Eton College, the first 11 founder members formed the National Association of Groundsmen which became the Institute of Groundsmanship in 1969. The original purpose was defined as being to improve the status of groundsmen and the standard of groundsmanship. Our vision is to promote quality surfaces and quality services and establish the IOG as ‘the’ leading professional organisation for grounds management, recognised by the National Governing Bodies of Sport and the public, private and voluntary sectors for its industry knowledge and technical expertise. In 2011, the IOG set up the Young Board of Directors (YBD). The YBD are leading the Institute’s ‘Get into Grounds’ strategy encouraging 14-16 year olds, school leavers and young people to consider a career in groundsmanship. Most members of the group entered the industry by volunteering at a local sports club and learnt the skills and gained the experience they needed as they went along. You can follow the YBD on Twitter; @iogyoungboard or on Facebook; ‘The IOG Young Board’. Alternatively you can e-mail us at youngboard@ iog.org and head to www.iog.org for more information on the IOG and the Young Board of Directors. 2016 was the first LANDSCAPE Show that the IOG Young Board of Directors attended. We found the variety of exhibitors along with the quality of attendees invaluable, and therefore made no hesitation in deciding to come back for 2017. Due to the quality of exhibitors and visitors, the IOG Young Board made many useful connections that we have greatly benefitted from since the show last year. The Young Board are present at the LANDSCAPE Show on the 19th and 20th September, so please do come and visit us on our stand.

NLA

Harrowden Turf Harrowden Turf are proud to have been chosen by Warwick Taylor Landscapes to supply the turf and Meadowmat to a poignant project in Litchfield. Violet Mornington passed away after a short illness in 2013, aged just 5. Her parents, unable to find a fitting memorial for her, raised funds to build a garden at their local crematorium. The remarkable thing about this project was the timeline involved. Warwick Taylor were commissioned in March to design and construct the garden. Work was to be completed by 3rd June. Violet’s 9th birthday. The construction phase of the build was completed in just 3 weeks. The garden is a place for quiet contemplation and joyful remembrance. It’s a child-friendly place with lawns, play areas and a wildflower meadow to encourage butterflies to visit the garden. Chris Taylor, Director of Warwick Taylor Landscapes said “I relished the challenge of this project. I have daughters and can only imagine how her parents are feeling. I wanted to create something to help them, and others in similar situations.” He went on to say “Why did I select Harrowden’s products for the lawns and the wildflower gardens? Well, it was about quality, service and reliability. I have a good working relationship with Harrowden Turf Ltd and know that I can always rely on them to deliver exactly what I need, when and where I need it. When time lines are so short, it’s important to trust your suppliers.”

NLA are proud to have supported the LANDSCAPE Show for the last 4 years, finding the show to be the perfect place to both help educate and forge new relationships. This year we will be having focused sessions on the built environment, hoping to demonstrate the importance of the landscape and architectural sectors working together.

Oxford Planters is a well-established company manufacturing since 2004. They supply private individuals as well as garden designers from around the world. Oxford Planters have already had successful stands at both the prestigious ‘RHS Chelsea Flower Show’ and ‘RHS Chatsworth’ this year. The interest shown by clients and designers for art deco style gardens around the country inspired the design. The result is the new ‘Templeton Planter’ which was launched this year at the RHS Chelsea flower show. The ‘Templeton’ is an elegant planter, capped with lead. The planter has been made with layers of Medite Tricoya Extreme to create the beautiful shadow lines seen from every angle of this planter, which add complexity and interest while retaining a sleek 1920’s design. Hand crafted and made in Medite Tricoya Extreme, the Templeton can be painted in any colour of your choice. Perennial

Perennial is the only charity that looks after everyone working in horticulture, including landscaping and its associated professions, providing a lifeline when times get tough.

Boot & Dart Boomkwekerijen bv Boot & Dart Boomkwekerijen along with several other leading rose breeders in France, Denmark and Germany have concentrated their R&D Resources developing a range of new Landscape Roses, that have the following qualities: a compact habit which is ideal for mass planting and has a high level of resistance to leaf spots and mildew. They are non-suckering, growing on their own roots with abundant flowers repeating over a long period. They have petals which drop after flowering and are easily pruned by flail cutting. Breeding new Roses is a very long and expensive process which uses selected parent plants that are hand pollinated in controlled conditions. Seedlings are planted out and go through a series of field selection and trials and on average 8,000 crosses are made to produce a new introduction.

Life’s challenges such as illness, injury or loss of income can strike at any time and their effects can be devastating, especially for those working in jobs that rely on physical health and fitness. Perennial helps by offering free and confidential advice as well as practical and emotional support, which also extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Its team of Caseworkers and Debt Advisers across the UK tailor the support they give to the specific needs of each individual. Many of us support charities as a way of giving something back, and what better than choosing a cause close to home that helps the people within our own industry? Perennial relies on income from its supporters to deliver its services to those that need them. There is still a way to go before Perennial and the help it offers is known by everyone in the industry. As the leading landscaping trade event, LANDSCAPE is a very valuable platform for Perennial to raise awareness and increase support.

From hybridisation to introduction takes 8-10 years and by specifying a Boot & Dart ‘Fleur Robuste’ Landscape Roses you know you will get a quality result. All are produced bare root or gown in a 1.5 litre pot. For the full range of Fleur Roses and to reserve a copy of their upcoming new edition of the Handbook of Landscape Plants, call onto their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Thrive

Students attending garden therapy charity Thrive in Birmingham have been celebrating winning a coveted Silver Merit Medal for their display at BBC Gardeners’ World Live. The young people attend the charity’s Grow and Learn programme at Kings Heath Park and together with Thrive horticultural therapists and volunteers, they designed and created a garden entitled ‘The Life and Times of Miss Beatrix Potter’ inspired by the hit film which starred Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. The garden featured a railway track which represented Miss Potter’s journey through life, and the alpines alongside signified her determination and changing emotions of sadness, light and happiness. Her passion for creating and writing were represented by paintbrushes, pens and books. Amanda Fields regional manager of Thrive Birmingham, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won a Silver Merit Medal, which is one better than last year!” “The students have been motivated by this project from day one and have learnt so much about how to design a garden. We’ve explored how emotions can be represented through planting and what makes you feel good as well as look good.” “Seeing a project through like this from start to finish is a huge thing for these students, all of whom have additional needs.” “It shows determination and commitment, team work, as well as boosting their confidence and self-esteem knowing their end design will come to life at such a prestigious show.” The garden has been moved back into the former TV gardens in Kings Heath Park where Thrive Birmingham is based. Thrive are exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Lewis Quarries Lewis Quarries has been extracting Purbeck Stone continuously on the Isle of Purbeck for over 80 Years. Their quarry is located alongside the historic Priests Way, just between Worth Matravers and Langton Matravers. Purbeck Limestone is a unique resource as an exceptionally hard marble-like stone which is suitable for both external and internal applications. It is one of the most versatile British natural stones by virtue of its subtle tonal variations and exceptional durability. Tones vary from deep grey/blue to pale beige and different finishes can be applied to suit any style of home for maximum durability in both internal and external areas. Traditionally used in churches but equally at home in residential and commercial applications its flexibility also makes it a great option for the seamless continuation of interior flooring to exterior paving. Aside from Purbeck stone they also draw on a wide range of British sandstones and limestones to supply finished products for flooring, paving and walling including cladding, traditional cobbles, setts, pitchers and flagstones. They can also supply structural landscape products such as rockery stone, landscape boulders and gravel along with small block which can be used for bank retention. Streetscape

Streetscape Social Enterprise is a London based charity, dedicated to growing the lives of 18-25 year olds who are long-term unemployed, disadvantaged and socially excluded. We do this by providing 15-month salaried apprenticeships in landscape gardening, where apprentices work towards a qualification in Horticulture. Our core aim is to help each apprentice build the skills and experience they need to move into, and retain, work and, in so doing, rise above social exclusion, and reach their full potential. Integral to this is our Social Enterprise model, wherein we offer garden design, landscaping, and maintenance services to residential, community, and commercial clients across Greater London. The quality of our apprentice work has been recognised by gardens built at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in 2015 and 2016. We are committed to Growing lives, Transforming landscapes. We are delighted to support the LANDSCAPE Show once again and to take the opportunity to create greater awareness of our apprenticeships within the industry. Azpects Ltd When timber decking gets wet it gets slippery - people often suffer injuries as a result. Until recently there hasn’t been much you could do about it without drastically changing the appearance of the decking however Azpects have found the solution, they call it Deck Magic. Not only does it give an enhanced slip resistance to wet decking it also resists algae, fungal growth and staining whilst maintaining its natural appearance! It can be applied to new and old, bare or tanalised decking, but not suitable for coated timber. Being a water-based sealer it also allows wood to breathe naturally, preserving the life of the timber. How does it work, Magic? Well not quiet, it contains a clever formula that reacts with water to rise out of the timber, like thousands of microscopic fingers, giving significant slip resistance on wet decking. Azpects have an independently commissioned report stating, ‘Decking treated with EASYSeal Deck Magic provided a higher level of traction than untreated samples and also resisted the build-up of algae. The level of slip risk presented to pedestrians on the decking reduced from high-risk where untreated to low-risk on the treated samples as per HSE guidelines for slip resistance’. So if you have timber decking and want slip resistant decking, without changing its appearance, order Deck Magic now from Azpects on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

TDCA Isabel Coulton Sculpture Unlucky for some CP13 is the number of Isabel Coulton’s stand this year at the 2017 LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. On it she will be showcasing her beautiful boxing hare, originally carved from lime wood, now cast into bronze. In this July issue of LANDSCAPE Preview Isabel shares the exciting new prospects she has for her sculpture. Working in collaboration with Stuart Wright of Superscan3D, she is now able to speak with her clients, public or private, about size. Of course a sculptor can work in any size, but this technique will enable her to offer a ten or twenty foot sculpture at fabulously lower prices than if it were made full scale. Her carefully detailed style is generally ideal for sculpture enlargement, as there is so much information for the 3D scanner to work with. Stuart has many years’ experience working in the film & TV industry, providing 3D digital scanning services for many well-known productions. Since leaving ‘Pinewood Studios’, he now runs ‘Superscan 3D’, working with Artists such as Anish Kapoor and Bushra Fakhoury. He therefore has a great knowledge of this relatively new technology, and is a recognised leading authority in his particular field. Isabel Coulton warmly invites you to her stand to experience navigating her sculpture on screen and also touching and feeling the original. She will be delighted to talk over possible projects and show you past and present works in her portfolio, as well as other stunning and highly individual art works of hers. “There are no limits”, says Isabel. Come and meet Isabel on her stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

With a vast array of decking products now on offer, how can you be sure you are choosing one that will perform to your expectations? Independent help and advice is at hand from the Timber Decking and Cladding Association whose mission is to help ensure that all decking installations perform to good standards. Properly designed and constructed timber decking will provide years and years of trouble free service with a little annual maintenance. Whether you’re going to do the work yourself or using the services of a professional installer, it is definitely worth doing your research before you start. Using good quality and preferably endorsed products is a must. For decking, the TDCA operates a quality scheme called DeckMark® whereby materials or services are audited annually for compliance with the standards set by the TDCA. This gives you peace of mind that you are dealing with a reputable company. You will find details of accredited installers and material suppliers on the TDCA decking website or the decking calculator APP, available for I-phone and Android. Timber is a truly amazing, natural material. Every piece is unique. With inherent warmth and beauty, timber has the ability to soften and accentuate buildings and landscapes like no other material and offers a winning combination of versatility, economy and environmental credentials to any building project. We are supporting the LANDSCAPE Show this year. It’s a nice show, easily accessible with guest speakers galore and a variety of exhibitors. It provides a great opportunity to see and learn about products and services on offer and network with people from the landscaping industry. To visit the TDCA decking website go to www.tdca.org.uk.

Hedges Direct Trading online for over 10 years, Hedges Direct are specialist suppliers of hedging, turf, pleached trees, living screens and topiary. With decades of experience in the horticultural industry and a culture firmly focused on quality and service, they are able to supply specimen plants for any size project, all with an industry leading delivery turnaround. As one of the biggest suppliers of pleached trees in the UK, Hedges Direct offer a large range, varied by age and species to provide the ultimate choice of this unusual, rare form of tree. The term ‘pleached’ refers to trees which have a very straight clear stem with a narrow framework of branches trained onto bamboo canes, creating a unique shaping and structure. This formal method of training produces strikingly beautiful trees, much favoured by the top garden designers and can be used to stunning effect when planted in rows at set distances which creates an elevated ‘green wall’, ideal as an alternative to high fencing. Additionally they can be used for high level screening to cover unsightly buildings, or to grow above a fence line providing an extended privacy screen to a height of 3m or more. Hedges Direct also supply a form of pleached tree known as Pleached Espalier, where the foliage is trained to grow in tiers providing a distinctive look and structure often favoured for flowering and fruiting trees, as well as supplying the rarer ‘roof’ or ‘box head’ form of pleached tree. For further information about their range of pleached trees, visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

TREE AID

Platipus Anchors Limited Platipus Anchors were delighted to have been involved in the re-development of Orchard Lisle Courtyard in London. Student accommodation for Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital surrounds this beautiful courtyard, which is open to the public and required re-developing with soft and hard landscaping. The scheme to re-develop this site was an ambitious, asymmetric design which required twelve mature, rootballed Pyrus Chanticleer trees to breathe new life into the courtyard, but due to buried services on-site a traditional anchor system could not be used. As a result, the Platipus Deadman Fixing System – Plati-Mat®, which utilises kerbstones or sleepers, was selected to secure the trees safely and create the aesthetically pleasing finish to this landscape which went on to win a BALI principle award. For more information on Platipus anchoring systems, please visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Health and wellbeing, air quality, placemaking, bio diversity are the most important issues cities of today have to address. Gold for Gould

Kate Gould Gardens is absolutely delighted to announce that its 2017 Fresh Garden ‘City Living’ won not only a gold medal but also best in category at the RHS Chelsea Flower show. Speaking from the showground on medals day Kate said “City Living is the most ambitious garden I have ever designed for Chelsea. Without the skill, determination and sheer hard work of the most amazing team we would never have made it. There were moments when I thought we wouldn’t but I shouldn’t have doubted the guys. They are epic and have realised my creation on paper into the most wondrous of creations of which I am so, so proud. Every time I look at the garden I have to pinch myself that it is actually there and looks if anything far better than it did in my head. Hats off and huge thanks to everyone involved.” The “City Living” garden is a contemporary garden on several levels imagined in a typical urban apartment block. While these dwellings are often cold and slightly forbidding in appearance they could easily be transformed with the addition of attractive green outdoor spaces for residents use with comfortable and sheltered seating areas surrounded by appealing planting and tranquil water features. This garden could be added to existing buildings or easily inserted into new builds to effectively ‘green up’ city spaces and provide valuable habitat for wildlife and birds. The garden is set on three levels with a mezzanine floor and is positioned directly adjacent to the dwellings making use of the space beneath and alongside the building, providing an interesting and ‘green’ route to and from the resident’s homes. A stairwell clad with back lit terrazzo (see editors notes for interesting story on this) featuring cantilevered steps and a perforated metal screen provide stability to the structure whilst allowing light to filter down to the lower levels. This ensures each level can be effectively gardened and utilised for recreation. Green walls and a water feature are incorporated into the scheme to add a sense of tranquillity and movement. Kate Gould is one of the featured speakers at this years’ LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. The choice of products reflects the quality of the new premium residential development, as well as its stunning new urban landscape design. Taking pride of place within the landscaping are the Woodscape Bespoke Curved and L-Shaped Woodberry Wall Seats which allow residents of the new neighbourhood development to sit and relax in the large courtyard garden areas. The contemporary urban furniture reflects the modern landscaping, presenting a premium finish. The products clip neatly onto the walls with an easy-install retro-fit feature. A number of Woodscape’s hardwood signature Type 8 Benches and Type 5 Seats, Modular Planters and Hardwood Decking were also provided, to offer alternative seating arrangements and standing areas throughout the site and create added interest within the urban landscaping setting. The 30% increase in public open space with the three new public parks created for the scheme, means a stronger network of open spaces for residents to enjoy and is now proving immensely popular. Woodscape will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Avant Techno Owning a honey farm may sound like a relaxing job, but moving the hives around in the middle of the night was no easy task for the Wallace family of Quince Honey Farm in Devon. Each year the hives must be moved to different locations to allow the bees to access particular crops. In Spring the hives are placed in oilseed rape fields, in Summer they are near the wildflowers in the hedgerows, and in the Autumn the hives return to South Molton for the local heather. Each different crop enables the bees to produce honey with different flavours. While making honey might sound easy, Ian explained that moving the hives by hand three times a year was “brutal, heavy work. Ian doubted there was a machine that would fit the bill until he found the Avant 200, which is compact enough to tow behind a 4x4 or tractor. Ian explained that one year while moving the hives to the rape fields at 3am their cars got stuck, and after much revving of engines, a concerned local resident called the police, which led to the police car getting stuck too! However once the Avant was unloaded they were able to tow all the vehicles out of the field. Avant manufactures a wide range of compact, 4-wheel drive machines, which can be fitted with a very comprehensive range of accessories to meet the many varied requirements of the hire market to make general maintenance jobs, easy and less labour intensive.

Dalefoot Composts After the driest winter in over 20 years, and our summer now hotting up, clever ideas to keep watering to a minimum in the garden are a must. Dalefoot Composts’ peat free Wool Compost range contains sheep’s wool from the Cumbrian fells and so the composts keep moist for longer - naturally. The ‘hygroscopic’ properties of wool trap water, helping gardeners save precious H2O. The compost also contains bracken, and combined with wool, the all-natural ingredients release a steady stream of nitrogen and other musthave nutrients to feed the plants over the growing season, so no further feed is required. The range boasts Wool Compost for potting and containers, Wool Compost for Vegetables and Salads, Wool Compost Ericaceous, Wool Compost Double Strength and Wool Compost for Seeds. Dalefoot’s Lakeland Gold, which also busts troublesome clay soil, makes an ideal mulch and can be used at any time of the year to lock in moisture and goodness. For your clients’ or your own garden, Dalefoot Composts has a professional growing medium to suit every need and can help you save water, even during the warmest months. Dalefoot Composts will be exhibiting at LANDSCAPE this September at Battersea Park.

TREE AID TREE AID works in the drylands of Africa, planting trees and helping to build thriving and sustainable communities. In Africa trees mean life and they provide communities with food and income through selling tree products. Over the last 10 years they have grown 15.8 million trees and helped over one million villagers in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali and Niger. One of the people TREE AID has supported is Kazengo, a 70 year old grandmother from Burkina Faso. Kazengo joined our Forest Governance project and was shown how to protect the trees from further deforestation. Trees improve soil quality for better harvests, reduce soil loss through flooding and increase biodiversity as well as being a source of food and income. “The forest has changed a lot since I was a girl and I am very sad that the forest resources are disappearing. There used to be a thick and dense forest in our village which produced lots of fruit for us to eat and was home to antelope and big cats.” “Over time the forest has become barren and the animals have moved on. Logging by companies and villagers using the trees for firewood has meant the forest has been overused and hasn’t recovered. There is a big difference now, through TREE AID’s projects you can see where the forest is protected and we can harvest fruits from the trees. I am teaching my family how to protect the forest, our children will be the future and it is important they learn the techniques from us so that the forest keeps regenerating, protecting the environment and producing food for people.” Come and talk to TREE AID about their work on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

EcoProTec EcoProTec, the new water based brand of internal and external stone and paving sealers from UK manufacturer LTP has gone from strength to strength since its launch 2 years ago. With over 30 years of experience in the tile and stone market LTP are already one of the biggest retail brands in the UK and during a three year research and development project the company sourced and tested the most advanced water based ingredients to produce the EcoProTec range of sealers and cleaners, which are all on display at the LANDSCAPE Show. Projects have included both interior and exterior stone surfaces at the Bovey Castle Hotel, large sections of the interior of the National Gallery of Ireland including the Portland stone staircases. Interior flagstones and external block paved areas at Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford. Most recently EcoProTec has been used externally by Liverpool FC at the Anfield grounds to help protect and seal hundreds of engraved granite tributes used to pave the walkways of the gardens. There is now a noticeable trend for using a variety of stones and designs for exterior use and this provides unique sealing and cleaning challenges especially when the stone chosen is also used internally as well. With interest in the EcoProTec products ranging from Budleigh Salterton and Bucharest to Beijing, LTP are preparing for a significant increase in production in 2017/18 including two new products which will be launched at the LANDSCAPE show this September in Battersea Park. Come along and see them on their stand.

DSDHA Central London awaits an unparalleled population surge, with super-commuters arriving via the new infrastructure of Crossrail and HS2 set to join existing Londoners on the West End’s already crowded pavements. As a legacy of post war planning that prioritised the car, the West End currently suffers from traffic congestion and poor air quality, while the lack of crossings and cycle routes causes many accidents and casualties. There is also a significant lack of public spaces for residents, workers and tourists alike to enjoy in the area. As principal designers, DSDHA have led a team of landscape architects, transport engineers and lighting experts working on the much-needed rejuvenation of the area between Tottenham Court Road and Gower Street. Their strategy removes the one-way system on the two arteries to slow the pace of vehicles and make space for high quality public amenity for cyclists and pedestrians. This redesign incorporates five new public spaces, including Whitfield Gardens, Princes Circus and a new park in Alfred Place – the first green space in the West End for over 100 years. Their work began by conducting fieldwork to observe the way people behave. These techniques of ‘grounded research’ guided their approach to the reconfiguration of London’s West End as more intuitive network of spatial connections that favour social cohesion and chance encounter. Instead of treating the streets as mere transit routes between destinations, with activities and life taking place in parks or interiors of buildings, they interpreted them as integral components of an interconnected and open public realm, with technology playing a fundamental role in maximising human enjoyment and productivity. Moreover their research, both historical and on the ground, revealed an incredibly rich, yet poorly connected, network of cultural institutions in the West End. On the basis of this observation they have rebranded the area as a cultural quarter for London, where its many world-class museums, theatres and academic institutions (i.e., The British Museum, RADA, University College London, Wellcome Foundation, Architectural Association, Fashion Retail Academy, etc.), together with open spaces and commercial activities, can create a cradle for creative entrepreneurship and collaborative learning The DSDHA will feature as part of the PechaKucha Evening at this year’s LANDSCAPE Show in Battersea Park this September. Perennial Bernard Tickner has been awarded an MBE in Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Honours. The award has been given in recognition for services to wildlife conservation and horticulture, relating to his voluntary conservation work in Suffolk and for his work at Fullers Mill Garden in West Stow. Peter Newman, Chief Executive of Perennial, says: “This honour is richly deserved by Bernard and we are all thrilled by its announcement. His contribution to the local brewing industry in Suffolk has seen long-standing economic growth and worldwide renown for Greene King and his place in the world of horticulture, through the creation of Fullers Mill Garden and his subsequent gifting of it to Perennial, shall be his legacy for many generations to come.” Speaking about his award, Bernard Tickner, who has recently celebrated his 93rd birthday at Fullers Mill Garden, said: “I am truly honoured to have been made an MBE. I was first told in early May and not being able to tell anyone has been so difficult, especially as I enjoyed my own birthday celebrations a couple of weeks ago! I have loved living in this part of Suffolk and feel very fortunate to have been able to work and live here for as long as I have. I am humbled that Her Majesty considers me as deserving of the title and I look forward to meeting her to thank her in person.” Perennial is hosting a special event at the Fullers Mill Garden on 31 July as part of its annual programme of garden tours and visits. Known for its superb collection of lilies (as seen on the BBC’s Great British Garden Revival in 2015), rare and unusual shrubs, perennials and marginal plants this event will provide a perfect opportunity to enjoy the garden in high summer. The garden tour with head gardener Annie Dellbridge will be followed by a picnic lunch and homemade cakes, for which the garden has a local reputation. For more information about the garden and opening times visit www.fullersmillgarden.org.uk. Venus Stone The Venus team are delighted to be able to showcase one of their newest and unique imports, Raj Green Sawn and Honed paving. The honed treatment of the Raj Green Indian Sandstone brings a luxurious finish to an otherwise traditional looking paving stone, leaving a smooth, crisp surface that twinkles in sunlight, revealing a compelling variety of tones. The rustic heritage of the classic Raj paving combined with this contemporary finish provides a truly unique paving option, with a Mediterranean style glow. Due to the extensive amount of contacts built up over the past 20 years in the importing business, Venus Stone are proud to be one of the only stone merchants offering this paving at such a reasonable price. Utilised here to create an innovative water feature, demonstrating just how versatile this luxurious stone can be, Raj Green Sawn and Honed will look equally stunning when laid as regular paving. At a time when landscaping is increasingly leaning more towards the contemporary side as premium stone becomes more affordable, honed paving stone is becoming an essential addition to any modern patio or garden. With an engaging and cultured colouring to boot, Raj Green offers more than just modernity, it offers character. Come and see samples of the range on the Venus Stone stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Hook Up Solutions LTD Hooka safely installs all your landscaping materials just where you need them, based in Hertfordshire, Hooka Solutions are the manufacturers of the Hooka lift and carry crawler, which is only 1 metre wide yet can transport 1.5 tonnes, which enables the lift and shifting of landscaping materials into restricted sites. The Hooka is a great asset for landscape gardeners / builders as its design allows it to safely move a huge range of materials from roadside to jobside. Hooka Solutions have recently been involved in two jobs in central London for roof top gardens. The machine was craned up six levels on to the roof then used to move all the materials saving immense time and labour, not to mention the double handling of materials. With pizza ovens being very on trend, they have had many requests for the Hooka machine to move the ovens, often weighing in access of 500kg, into rear gardens. So, if you have any of these to move, tonne bags containing soil, aggregate, sharp sand etc.; pallets of bricks, blocks, York stone etc.; pizza ovens; hot tubs; garden statues; root ball trees or street furniture, then consider using a Hooka. Come and see them for yourself on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Moore Concrete Products Urban sprawl calls for innovative green solutions that reduce the ecological footprint of concrete based infrastructure. Typical green roofs or green walls systems usually demand elaborate soil and watering system, however this is not the case in ECOncrete® Bio Active concrete wall tile design, that has a bio-enhanced substrate that supports the growth of mosses, lichens and climbing vegetation and doubles as a highly aesthetic decorate façade. The innovative ECOncrete®Bio Active wall tiles differ from standard concrete units on three levels; concrete chemistry, surface rugosity and 3D macro complexity. These three elements work in synergy to mimic the features of natural surfaces thus enhancing the walls ability to support rich flora of plants that require little or no soil. ECOncrete®’s unique Bio Active wall mix is tailored to keep the pH of water encountering the surface low, as opposed to the highly alkaline pH of water accumulated on standard concrete. The high surface rugosity, and the unique 3D design includes micro pores, rugged textures, and varying elevations, increase the walls ability to capture water and moisture, thus further contributing to flora growth as well as increasing their ability to effectively latch onto the wall surface. ECOncrete®Bio Active wall tiles were used in the construction of a biological pond and fountain at the BIG commercial centre (Ashdod Israel). This installation demonstrated the ability of the tiles to receive rich and diverse foliage, mimicking natural waterfall/spring plant life in an urban setting. For additional information please visit the Moore Concrete Products stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Long Rake Spar Decorative aggregate supplier Long Rake Spar is celebrating a major milestone in its history as it reaches its 150th anniversary. Set in the heart of the Peak District, the company has evolved from a local mine to one of the country’s leading suppliers of decorative aggregates and landscaping stone. Originally founded in 1867 near the village of Youlgreave, the Long Rake Spar Co. was chiefly concerned with extracting and distributing the area’s famed ‘Derbyshire Spar’. The mineral, well known for its bright white, sparkling appearance was popularly used in Victorian gardens and landscapes. By the 1920s there were 15 miners working tirelessly at the site to extract over 12,000 tonnes of Spar each year and supplied to landscapers and home owners across the British Isles. However the prosperity of the Long Rake Spar Mining Co. was not to last and by the 1970s the company had reached the end of the Spar vein, meaning the business had to diversify. The surface works were already processing aggregates from other Derbyshire quarries but expansion was on the horizon as T&T Broadhurst acquired the Long Rake Spar Co. Ltd in 1985. Through a combination of determination and entrepreneurial thinking, the company thrived, increasing its product offering to include a range of imported materials alongside its UK sourced products. The introduction of the Platinum Range offered landscapers and contractors access to stone that had not previously been available to the UK landscaping market. The unique colouring of products like Flamingo, Onyx and Black Ice meant that builders and landscapers could expand their design options, offering homeowners a wider selection of choices, supplied exclusively by Long Rake Spar. As it celebrates its 150th anniversary Long Rake Spar continues to look to the future with further expansion and an increase in stockholding to provide efficient delivery and competitive pricing to customers. Come and talk to them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

PorcelPave PorcelPave are excited to be bringing the innovative new PorcelQuick system to the LANDSCAPE Show for 2017. Fixing external porcelain tiles can be both time consuming and costly, but with PorcelQuick you can expect to see a reduction in materials of up to 80%. This is a huge advantage when fixing patios for terraced houses where access can be an issue. The benefits of the PorcelQuick Adped System means that there is up to 80% reduction in materials & cost and areduced risk of back ache or injury. It provides shortened installation times, high load bearing strength and it resists structural movement. It will reduce carbon footprint by up to 80% and is guaranteed for 25 years. Porcelain tiles require a solid base to avoid lipping which means a substantial amount of materials are needed, as well as time to let the base dry. With the PorcelQuick system a series of pedestals are created using a mix of sharp sand and cement, which can be tiled as soon as they are hardened. The finished patio can also be grouted, using Grout Backer Rod to support the grout during application and curing. Stainless steel external trims are also available to finish the patio without the need for profiling. Visit the PorcelPave stand at LANDSCAPE 2017 this September in Battersea Park for more information on the PorcelQuick system.

The Garden Trellis Company

The Garden Trellis Company are very proud to announce that this year they are celebrating 25 years since the start of their remarkable journey. Founded in 1992 by Julian Furness, they began producing high quality bespoke joinery for garden designs, and this remains at the heart of the company today; creating exquisite garden joinery for private customers as well as many of the UK’s very best garden landscapers and designers. Julian started the business from an old cow shed in Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, in 1992 but as demand for his custom-made trellis, gates and panels grew, the business quickly moved to a small factory unit in Frinton-on Sea. In 1994, Julian recruited his first employee, and today the team has grown to 40 employees, including joiners, panel makers, fitters, and designers, some of whom have been with the company for many years. The team has built an enviable reputation for creative design, professional service and the highest quality craftsmanship, and have showcased their work on many occasions at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Today the company operates from a 35,000 sq ft workshop and design centre complete with purpose built paint workshop, drying rooms and state of the art dust extraction system and wood waste heater, to provide a carbon neutral heating system for their workshops. In recent years, it has introduced a wide range of affordable ready-made and ready to assemble products available to buy online, to reach a wider range of customers looking for quality joinery. Tailor-made, custom designed garden joinery remains at the heart of The Garden Trellis Company’s business, and the team are extremely grateful for all their customers who have helped make every one of their 25 years a success! Please come and visit them on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

The Gardeners Guild ‘Good gardeners are busy gardeners.’ Many gardeners do not feel the need to be vetted because most of their work comes from recommendations or is repeat business. So how can a good gardener communicate their competence? One way is to become a member of The Gardeners Guild – only qualified gardeners can join. Another way is to advertise your commitment to professional practice. For example, a gardener may state that they are insured or are licensed waste carriers. A Caution (!) sign on a gardeners van demonstrates that they take safe transporting of chemicals seriously. To help members advertise their dedication to doing things properly, The Gardeners Guild has designed 3 new van stickers to help members communicate that they are either insured, licensed waste carriers and/or have chemicals on board (pesticides, fertilisers and stored fuel). These 3 new stickers will complement their existing membership logo so that they form a neat series of stickers. Come and talk to us at LANDSCAPE 2017 to see samples and talk to us about the many other practical services available to qualified gardeners.

Trans-European Stone With over 400 years of archaeology and history from the Spanish Armada to the Falkland’s crisis, the Historic Chatham Dockyard on the River Medway in Kent is still looking immaculate three years on from its multi-million-pound upgrade, completed in 2014. The 84-acre site, once a pinnacle for English Shipbuilding provided over 500 ships to the Royal Navy is the most complete example of a Georgian dockyard in the world. It played a vital role in British history; where Nelson, Samuel Pepys, Marc Brunel and other legends of our past once trod, albeit on less notable paving. The extensive project saw Trans-European Stone supply over 2,300 m2 of Belgian blue limestone paving from the quarry Les Carriés de la Pierre Bleue Belge for the external landscaping. The 200mm widths of random lengths between 300-600mm were given a tumbled finish to give an antique and weathered look, seamlessly blending the old and the new. With an annual footfall of over 600,000, the paving looks faultless three years after installation. Nigel Howard, Historic Buildings and Environment Manager, said “The Historic Dockyard Chatham has used Belgian Blue Limestone paving within a highly sensitive historic environment as a significant part of the external public realm works as part of our Command of the Oceans project. The stonework has raised the bar on the presentation of our external environment, providing a modern and hard-wearing surface working in perfect juxtaposition with the historic environment that surrounds it.” For more information please visit TransEuropean Stone on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Step Change

We recently spoke to Step Change about their work. “We discovered in our research project that there is a diverse range of care cultures operating across the UK care sector and that they lie on a spectrum. This was important for us to grasp as this also appeared to influence how much the care setting was using the garden they already had. For designers and other outside specialists who are called in to work with a care setting, this is a really important piece of information that should guide the level and type of design or horticultural support to give. But how do you work out the care culture of your client? We produced a graphic diagnostic tool called the ‘Care Culture Map’ to aid both the care setting and outside specialist in identifying where they are located along the care culture spectrum. The Map contains several columns and one of them addresses the type of support that designers and outside specialists can provide at different points along this spectrum. The Map aims to ensure that work provided by outside specialists matches the current culture position of the care setting in order to avoid the risk of overdesigning the space. We call this new approach, ‘RelationshipCentred Design’ and it is based on working with where the care setting currently is (in their attitudes and practices relating to the outside space) and not where we think they should be, or wish to be. In essence, we believe that both parties, designers and care staff, need to be prepared to address and modify the way they may have traditionally worked together.” Come along and listen to Step Change on Tuesday 19th September at the LANDSCAPE show in Battersea Park to find out how their poster-sized Care Culture Map tool can help you engage successfully with care settings. Chartered Institute of Horticulture The Young Horticulturist of the Year competition prize is a £2500 travel bursary, so let’s give young horticulturists the chance to go on a trip of a lifetime! It’s becoming more important than ever to encourage young people into the horticultural industry, and since 1990 we have been running the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition annually to do just that. Attracting over 2,500 applicants this year the competition came to an exciting end in May 6th at University Centre Shrewsbury where the final 8 competitors fought for the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world with a £2,500 bursary. Previous winners have visited Africa, the Galapagos, Madeira and New Zealand to name a few. The bursary is provided in honour of Percy Thrower, Britain’s first celebrity gardener, known for his work with the BBC on Gardener’s world and Blue Peter. After successfully completing a plant identification round and answering over 10 rounds of questions Lachlan Rae came out on top. He now has the opportunity to plan how he will spend his £2,500 during his extended visit to Australia and possibly Tasmania. We asked Lachlan what advice he would give someone looking to enter the competition “I think the best piece of advice I could give someone considering entering the YHOY competition is to persist and accept any failures in a positive light. I won the competition on my fourth year of entry, making the final three times. Having experience of how the competition works helped me to develop my knowledge and overcome the nerves associated with competing. For anyone considering entering, just do it; there is nothing to lose and everything to gain!” Visit www.horticulture.org.uk/younghorticulturist-of-the-year/ to find out more or talk to members of the Institute on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.

Urban Street Designs Urban Street Designs were appointed to manufacture a Stainless Steel Retaining Tree Protector measuring, 1,080mm dia. x 600mm high that would allow raised planting beds to be incorporated into the landscape whilst importantly protecting the roots of an established tree on site. When soil or any type of fill is placed over an existing root system, it causes a reduction in the oxygen supply to the tree roots and slows down the rate of gas exchange between the roots and the air in the soil pore space. By installing the Retaining Protector around the circumference of the trunk, it allowed levels to be raised without compromising the life longevity of a healthy tree. Additional design features included an external joining plate to give additional strength and multiple connection points, 16mm x 150mm stainless steel studs around the perimeter of the base to aid the concrete footing to key to the Retaining Tree Protector. Perforated Plastic Pipe was installed by the landscape contractor under the root bed for additional drainage and oxygen source. Urban Street Designs is a specialist UK manufacturer of steel street furniture. They have over 35 years of engineering skills and expertise and have been providing a first class service within the industry since 1985. Their customers include architects, construction companies and local government to name but a few. Providing a concept to reality service, all their products are manufactured on site in the UK. Come and talk to the team on their stand at LANDSCAPE this September in Battersea Park.
