New Lithium Ion Hedge Trimmer
ECHO have introduced a new hedge trimmer, the DHC200 to their 50V Lithium Ion battery series which also includes trimmers and power blowers. Like all ECHO products this hedge trimmer has built-in features which take into consideration the environment in which it will be working and operator productivity. As a Lithium Ion product, the hedge trimmer offers clean battery power whilst providing performance equal to its petrol counterparts. It’s also built to the same professional standard as ECHO’s petrol hedge trimmers with their reputation for being powerful, tough and durable. “The ecological features of the new DHC-200, as with all the ECHO Lithium Ion series products,” say ECHO “offer contractors and professional landscapers exceptional benefits. The low noise makes them ideally suited to use in noise-sensitive areas such as schools and nursing homes. Low emissions are beneficial in their use in parks, nature reserves and organic gardens.” There are other considerations such as reduced maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts, easy-to-use controls with no recoil start, no more fuel filling or cold starting. The DHC-200 just needs charging up and it’s ready

to go. It’s lightweight and very comfortable to use, thanks to the ergonomic design of the front handle which helps manoeuvrability, and it can be used for long periods with little fatigue. Gardeners trimming ornamental hedges can count on the variable speed control for precision cutting and optimized run-time. The 62cm double-sided precision cut blades provide a clean cut with a long-lasting sharpness for a beautiful finish. The DHC-200 uses energy efficient motor controls to manage motor speed, power delivery and battery temperature for improved cutting performance and battery life. The DHC-200 comes with a 2Ah battery and rapid charger as standard, with an optional 4Ah battery for a longer run time. The rapid battery charger ensures the 2Ah battery is boosted to 80% capacity in 24 minutes and the 4Ah in 48 minutes. It’s also a hedge trimmer that is clean to use and store and there’s no need to store and mix two-stroke fuel. The two-year professional use and 5-year domestic warranty shows that ECHO are extremely confident in their machines. This confidence continues in its 50V battery range with a two-year warranty on all 50V lithium ion batteries.

Tree shelters for woodland creation Based in Perth, Scotland Highfield Forestry currently manage around 10,000 hectare of woodland throughout the UK. The work commenced in summer 2016 and phase one has seen trees planted on the Kilpatrick Braes and deer fences installed. The main tree planting work is scheduled to take place over three phases across three years with
Landscape supplier Green-tech has supplied 9,000 Tubex tree shelters and 80,000 tree spirals for the first phase of the creation of a new 279ha woodland in the Kilpatrick Hills. The woodland, located just 9 miles from the centre of Glasgow, has been commissioned by Forest Enterprise Scotland, the government agency responsible for managing Scotland’s National Forest Estate. Contractor Highfield Forestry won the contract and is working on behalf of Forest Enterprise Scotland to oversee and manage this vast productive broadleaf plantation.
foundation works being completed in spring 2019. Over the project life 763,159 new trees will be planted in the Kilpatrick Hills, The planting will follow detailed Forest Design Plans that have been through a consultation process with the public and many other interested parties. The design includes productive broadleaves and conifer species along with many areas of native woodlands and open ground to fulfil all objectives of multifunctional forestry. The new forests will benefit the biodiversity and landscape of the surrounding areas and will, in time, provide great opportunities for recreation. Frederic Drion of Highfield Forestry commented, “We’ve used Green-tech for a number of years as they supply quality materials at very competitive prices. From enquiries and advice through to orders and delivery we always receive a great service.”
“Saw it all and had to help” Seconds before the inferno that destroyed a Ferrari Scuderia in South Yorkshire last week, delivery driver Vince Cook helps the shaken and bloodied Ferrari driver out of the car. After witnessing the crash which has since made headlines throughout the world, Vince from Ipswich in Suffolk, jeopardised his own safety to drag the driver from the car. Despite suffering a heart attack earlier this year, Vince clambered down the steep bank to do whatever he could to help.

‘The poor guy was covered in cuts and there was blood everywhere. He was conscious but obviously really shaken and so I put his arm around my neck and helped him get away from the car and sat him propped up against a fence. I then noticed flames under the rear wheels of the car, and knew we had to get right away from it. I dragged him to the top of the hill near where the car had flown off the carriageway just in time to see the thing explode.’ Vince waited with the driver until emergency services arrived, gave his statements and left to continue his work, delivering garden machinery for his employer SCH (Supplies) Ltd. ‘I still had quite a few drops to get done so off I went,’ says Vince. ‘I don’t think I did anything special. I’m sure anyone would have done the same it’s just that I saw it all and had to help. I didn’t really think anything of it at the time. I just saw someone that needed help, so I went and helped him.

Cutting it at Cambridge Imagine being there when, in 1823, William Webb Ellis, a pupil at Rugby School, picked up the ball and with “a fine disregard for the rules” ran forward with it. Rugby Union was born and quickly spread from public schools to universities. Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club (CURUFC) was founded in 1872 and the first Varsity match was played in that year at Twickenham. The club is a wholly amateur student rugby club, yet one which aims to offer a rugby environment that is as ‘professional’ as possible. Three regular teams play: the Blues, the LX club and the U21 XV. The club has a great tradition of touring and also attracts internationals to their facilities. Grounds Manager David Hurst, a groundsman for thirty years, captains the team responsible for maintaining the high standard of pitch requirements, with the main pitch hosting eighty to ninety games a year. Traditionally the club had used triple gang cylinder mowers and would probably have continued to do so when
10

David spotted a Wessex roller mower at Saltex. He gave it little more thought until dealers Pecks of Ely suggested a demo of a Wessex RMX 180. Having never considered a rotary as a finishing mower David was initially sceptical and then surprised at the result. First there was the cost, at half the price of what they had traditionally bought. Then he was impressed with the speed and the exact cut height of 1” to 1½” as required. Using mulching blades proved to have added benefits in cutting costs on fertiliser, as much as £500 a year, an important consideration in an area as dry as East Anglia. “Equally,” says David, “going from a gang to the RMX 180 has cut down the time cutting the main and training pitches, saving as much as a day’s work when we’re cutting two or three times a week.” He was surprised as well by the fact you can take the grass down to 1” even if it’s damp, and the mower doesn’t lump. “Other groundsmen come up to me and ask what kind of cylinder mower are you using? When I tell them it’s a
news rotary, disbelief turns into a whole conversation about the Wessex.” David is impressed too by the ease of operation, minimum maintenance and servicing and, as he puts it, the way it’s built like a tank with bullet-proof construction. Whilst he uses a grinder to sharpen the blades and greases
the rollers once a week there is little else that’s needed. He adds they have also seen an exceptional saving on fuel costs, using the RMX behind a 27hp Kubota. And the future? Maybe a move to a bigger tractor and larger Wessex tri-deck, but for now they are happy with their purchase. www.broadwoodintl.co.uk

Rugged reliability isolation mounts that absorb vibration; a convenient hour counter to keep track of servicing requirements; easy access service doors at the front and rear; and well vented housing to extend transmission life. Billy Goat products are exclusively available in the UK through Henton & Chattell dealers nationwide. www.billygoat.co.uk.
Demanding conditions Billy Goat has now extended its range with the introduction of a newly developed sod cutter to remove all the strain from lifting turf. The SC181H is a step on from its predecessor, the SC180H, and offers significant developments. The next generation sod cutter incorporates the popular and easy to use hydrostatic drive with variable speed fingertip control for both forward and reverse. New operator controls with a reinforced handle have been introduced, alongside a new superstructure frame that is fifty per cent thicker to further reinforce the machine’s rigidity. With fifty lbs of addition steel behind it, the SC181H gives the ultimate in a smooth, stable and durable cut. Another new feature for the Billy Goat sod cutter is within the cut system; the rugged cast iron gear box has been strengthened with spiral gears and thicker seals added to deliver outstanding strength and dependability when cutting. Manoeuvrability has also been enhanced with a rear swivel castor to help perfect curved work and making turns at the end of a pass, which locks to allow for straight cutting. It also features unique drive wheels that are designed to shed mud in wet conditions and intuitively grip when dry. Billy Goat’s unique Set and Forget blade depth adjustment remains allowing the user to easily adjust the position to save time whilst providing precise cutting depths. The sod cutter inserts a blade up to 2.5” deep into the grass and cuts from underneath the root to expose bare ground, it then makes a horizontal cut to allow the turf to be removed in strips. Further developments include multiple oversized
Beaufort Polo Club in Tetbury is the foremost centre for the development of Polo in the Cotswolds. With 90 acres of fields and grassed areas and just a small team around him, Head Groundsman Wlodek Sterkowicz needs a maintenance regime that’s simple but that can cope with the demanding conditions that Polo brings. It all starts with the right grass seed, and for this Wlodek turns to DLF cultivars. Averaging 32 games on each of the 5 fields per season, the schedule requires an equally intense maintenance regime. “We have to cut the grass every other day to keep it at the ideal height of 25mm. As well as maintaining cutting heights, the grass must be incredibly wear tolerant and establish quickly – often we have less than 7 days to fill divots and reestablish areas that have sustained damage.” In 2016 Wlodek sought advice from Ian Barnett from Johnsons Sport Seeds on employing Tetraploid Perennial Ryegrass. www.dlf.co.uk

Faced with a rising tide of litigation from sufferers of Hand-Arm-Vibrations (HAV), white finger and other vibration causing conditions, an increasing number of major ground-care professionals are switching to battery power and shunning traditional petrol engines. “Contractors have been talking to us in increasing numbers as they identify the fact that our equipment vibrates at considerably lower levels than many of the petrol alternatives currently being used. In fact, for most of our tools the vibration levels are under the 2.5m/s2 exposure action value limit (EAV) limit, and well below the exposure limit value (ELV), allowing for all day safe use by a single operator,” says Steve Roskell, European marketing director for EGO Power+. To support its professional users EGO has strengthened its offering. Alongside its core products for domestic users, EGO has introduced an innovative backpack battery that keeps working relentlessly all-day long. It can provide a full day’s usage off a single charge, and recharges from flat in just four hours. Also benefiting from a backpack for comfortable extended usage, is the EGO LB6000E blower for big jobs that require big power. The backpack blower has the incredible ability to blow over 1020m3 of air per hour so leaves won’t stand a chance! It can run for up to two hours and has a padded adjustable harness for maximum operator comfort. Following that edict, Surrey University’s Formula Student team set about building their new electric 80kW single seat racer, with a specification that would take it from 0-60mph in under three seconds. Little did they know the project would bring them into contact with garden tractor manufacturer Countax, themselves the company behind British-built Runningblade, the racing lawnmower that broke the world record on Pendine Sands. The wheel nuts they needed were coincidentally the same as fitted to the post 2013 Countax garden tractors and the race was on to the Countax Factory near Oxford, where Lauren in the Parts Department had a set of wheel nuts ready and waiting in reception. The short hop back to Silverstone saw the wheels and nuts in place ready to pass the Formula Student Static Event. www.countax.co.uk

160 million rolls of turf
This week Rolawn harvested and delivered their 160 millionth roll of turf. As a result, the roll of turf in question was photographed on its’ journey from the production field, through the unique Profresh system that extends turf shelf life and then on to the customer. In true British tradition, this all happened on the wettest summer day experienced this year. The lucky recipient of the turf in question is newly launched Rolawn stockist, Hassett Plant Centre of Pitsford, Northampton. Jonathan Hill, Rolawn Sales & Marketing Director commented, “We are very proud of this amazing achievement, and I would like to thank all of our customers who have made it possible. But, it would be remiss of me on this occasion not to highlight the work of the turf production team, the farm staff who work through all that the UK weather can throw at them, assisted by a first-class administration team, combining to manage a sophisticated and challenging process. They all help to make my life easier through their dedication and attention to detail which is why we are the growers of Britain’s finest turf.” In recognition of this achievement Hassett Plant Centre have been provided with their turf order free of charge and a cheque for £500 is being donated to Rolawn’s nominated charity Greenfingers, who build sensory gardens for hospices in the UK providing care for children with life limiting conditions. www.rolawn.co.uk

have taken place at various venues across the country, have brought together over 1100 cricket groundsmen from grass roots, local and county clubs, international test venues, local authorities and schools and colleges. Building on the success of these seminars, Dennis and SISIS working in conjunction with Chris Wood (ECB Pitch Consultant) and Ian Smith (St Albans School Turf Consultant) decided to introduce a Cricket Pitch Renovation Day, which combines a mixture of thoughtprovoking indoor presentations with outside practical demonstrations. This exciting new chapter in the “For the Groundsmen by the Groundsmen” series began at St Albans School Woollam Trust, where over 160 delegates made their way to see the new concept. The event, which was supported by Boughton Loam, CricketWorld.com, Durrant Cricket, Limagrain UK, RT Machinery, Ecosol Turfcare, Poweroll and Headland Amenity was started by a warm welcome from Robert Jack (Dennis and SISIS) and Mark Illott (St Albans School Cricket Professional and former Essex and England Cricketer). Prepare for the Microdochium season With the autumn fast approaching, and the risk of disease increasing, greenkeepers are being encouraged to consider a new approach to disease control, and start trialling an integrated, preventative disease management strategy. Dr Colin Mumford, Bayer technical manager, explains that recent losses of active ingredients from the market, and the possibility of further withdrawals, particularly contact acting curative fungicides, due to regulation changes, means it is important to start developing and testing out new programmes that don’t depend on this type of chemistry. “I suggest greenkeepers start to test out their new preventative strategies now, while there’s still the safety net of contact chemistry available, to tackle any outbreaks while they perfect their control programmes.” When taking a preventative approach to disease control, greenkeepers should not overlook the importance of enhancing grass plant health, and integrate their chemical controls with cultural and biological practices.
“Having your turf in prime health condition will give you a head start against Microdochium patch as well as other diseases, such as Anthracnose, limiting the severity of outbreaks later on in the disease season.” And to maintain or improve turf health, Colin suggests that greenkeepers should make sure that their turf is supplied with adequate nutrition, and if required, nutritional supplements for turf development can be added. “Stress makes turfgrass more vulnerable to disease, and drought stress in particular often leads to weakening of the plant. So, providing that you don’t over-water your greens, as moist conditions are favourable to disease pathogens, supplemental irrigation can help to overcome this problem,” says Colin. Fungicide application timings should be carefully thought out, with a number of different factors considered when forecasting for the first application. Course location, prevailing weather conditions and historical disease pressure, will all influence a specific course’s likelihood of

news succumbing to disease. Most clubs will need to make their first preventative fungicide application in the early autumn, before disease has a chance to take hold, and as the grass will still be actively growing, greenkeepers should use a product with a systemic action. “Products such as Exteris® Stressgard™ (fluopyram and trifloxystrobin) and Dedicate® (tebuconazole and trifloxystrobin) have a systemic mode of action, which works
to transport the fungicide around the plant, meaning that any areas that don’t come into direct contact with a spray droplet, are protected. “Both products have a dual action, so, on top of the systemic action from fluopryam or tebuconazole, the trifloxystrobin acts as a local penetrant that acts as a barrier to pathogens entering via the leaf surface,” adds Colin. turfsolutions@bayer.com

The practice aims to completely transform the hard, urban character of the 10-acre, zone 2 location, in order to create a green residential oasis. White City Living will introduce, in total, eight acres of open space to an area of previously inaccessible industrial land at the heart of White City on Wood Lane. The project’s masterplan, by Patel Taylor, will create 1,477 new homes, ranging from studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom homes to penthouses, as well as boutique retail and commercial space designed to balance the existing area offering from neighbouring

Westfield London. This open space will incorporate a new five-acre public park which will be accessed off Wood Lane via a new bridge and pedestrian deck over the central line, opening up the entrance to the site, previously cut off from White City. A series of refurbished railway arches will also be opened and revitalised, creating important new pedestrian routes and improving connectivity from Westfield through the development. Murdoch Wickham’s vision uses distinctive, interlinked garden areas with subtle themes, and shared access routes, water features and extensive planting. The landscape proposals include: • Publicly accessible seasonal gardens with outdoor seating and extensive lawns. The gardens each create a different sense of scale and are increasingly more intimate in character • A dedicated Magnolia garden to be enjoyed by residents, which neighbours the indoor swimming pool of the residents’ facilities, creating a serene and beautiful place for private use • Public artworks to mark entrance points and support wayfinding and orientation throughout the development • A ‘calm zone’ park rich with water features, illuminated by night, with decked areas extending over the water connecting to sheltered, outdoor communal terraces for residents’ use • A meandering green park along the southern boundary of the site, adjacent to a number of existing railway arches that are designated for rejuvenation • The green route is further enlivened and animated by
news shallow pools and water jets, designed to encourage play and echo the fluvial design of the area The carefully considered range of planting types will serve to enhance the ecology and biodiversity of the area, and will include semi-mature trees including pine, oak, birch, cherry and maple. Sean Ellis, Chairman, St James told The Landscaper
“Murdoch Wickham’s ambitious vision for our new landscape for White City Living will be a complete transformation. The former warehouse site will be unrecognisable – instead offering a range of beautiful public and private spaces, designed to foster a sense of place, thanks to a wellbalanced mix of uses. It’s an inspiring design and we can’t wait to see it realised.”
Ready for Winter Ground Control, has acquired winter and exterior maintenance specialist Litter Boss in a move that will not only add hundreds of customers to its portfolio, but also bring the combined skills and experience of over 500 staff into the business. The joining of these two organisations cements Ground Control as the largest specialist gritting and winter maintenance provider in the UK. The deal was supported by a £16 million funding package from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking. Litter Boss, which has its HQ in Newcastle-UponTyne, was established over 30 years ago, and has a long history of growth thanks to its renowned excellent service delivery. Primarily focused on winter and exterior maintenance alongside a standalone internal cleaning business, the company has great synergies with Ground Control’s existing client base, not only adding approximately 3,500 sites but also significantly enhancing density across the UK. “Bringing Litter Boss into the Ground Control family is a strategic move to increase our winter maintenance capabilities across the UK,” explains Simon Morrish, CEO for Ground Control. “The combined infrastructure, people and innovative systems of our two companies expands our ability to offer customers a worry-free solution for their business continuity needs. Combine this with a comprehensive suite of products and services, and what we have is a market leading winter and exterior maintenance capability that is available to all 24/7.” Richard Johnson, Winter Maintenance Director of Litter Boss, who will now be Director of Winter Maintenance for the combined business, adds: “I am looking forward to working for Ground Control at a time when services like winter and grounds maintenance are increasingly on the radar of a wider variety of businesses. The combination of our respective portfolios bolsters our position as the leading winter maintenance service provider in the UK, providing unrivalled geographical
reach and increased concentration of teams. The challenge of leading this new business excites me enormously.” As Ground Control heads into the second half of 2017, the company is expecting further growth to all core areas of the business, including maintenance, landscaping, design, arboriculture, pest control as well as winter maintenance. www.ground-control.co.uk

Attracting sponsorship A 30 page booklet has been produced by Amberol, who manufacture self-watering planters and street furniture such as litter bins, benches and picnic tables, all made from recyclable or recycled materials. The guide is free from Amberol on application. Sections include advice on attracting sponsorship from businesses and other groups, with suggestions for ways of approaching organisations, raising awareness and putting a sponsorship structure in place. The booklet also explains some of the forms of grants and funding available, as well as including a range of case study examples from Britain in Bloom groups and organisations who have successfully used sponsorship to fund a range of improvement projects. Patience Atkinson-Gregory, Amberol’s managing director, explains the reasons behind creating the sponsorship guide. She says: “There’s a lot of hard work that goes on around the UK to keep communities looking attractive. Although much of that work is voluntary, it does cost money to buy plants, containers, tools and important items such as litter bins.
In our experience, businesses are often happy to help, but they aren’t sure how to go about it. After all, a well-kept and good-looking environment benefits everyone and can help improve the economic prosperity of a region. “ Councils and community groups are continuing to struggle with funding issues and budget cuts, so many organisations are looking for positive ways to involve businesses and other sections of the community in improving their environment. “Many of our customers use commercial sponsorship to help fund improvements for their community that local authority budgets can’t always stretch to,” adds Patience. “However, it’s important that any scheme is mutually beneficial. This guide aims to help community groups and horticulturalists create a successful strategy for working with organisations that are able to offer sponsorship and support – which doesn’t always have to be financial.” A family run company set up in 1969, Amberol work with councils, In Bloom groups, schools, businesses >>

New irrigation systems Briggs Irrigation, the Northamptonshire based manufacturer of a range of successful irrigation and dirty water dispersal systems, have reported on increasing growth in their Briggs Racecourse Irrigator, powered by the Hatz 1D81C silent pack engine. This product has been developed specifically for the demands of the modern racing world and has been introduced on many courses in the UK and around the world. Accurate and uniform application across the width and length of the track are essential to provide even going and keep the turf in top condition. With the Briggs Racecourse Irrigation package this is possible in all but the worst weather conditions. A drive system has been developed to apply very high flow rates at high speed so that the track can be watered as quickly as possible. The independent drive system also means that the machine can be used on most racecourses without any modification to pumps or underground mains Briggs Irrigation’s Adrian Colwill said “We have many of these units working on racecourses and farms here in the UK and a few overseas. Most of the country’s top racecourses are using our machines and we have been fitting the Hatz engine for the last 6 years”. Adrian continued “Our machines are operated up to 10 hours a day and there has been a shift towards the engine with the acoustic cover over the last few years to offer better conditions for the machine operator and to reduce the possibility of complaints about noise from the public.” Briggs Irrigation manufacture and distribute direct to end customers from Scotland to Cornwall so reliability and good back up are crucial to their choice of engine and supplier. There are a number of options they take with the Hatz engine including a paint finish in their choice of colour.
With their headquarters in Corby, Briggs Irrigation was formed in 1985 and has developed an expanding range of successful irrigation and dirty water dispersal systems. Since the early ‘90s the company has concentrated on boom irrigation for farmers, growers and groundsmen. Working closely with each sector, Briggs Irrigation now makes and markets a range of advanced irrigation booms, used by successful UK farmers and increasingly on farms around the world. Hatz diesel engines have been around since 1910. The company has subsidiaries in the USA, South Africa, Australia, and China together with a presence in most European Countries, enabling all users of Hatz engines to find a Hatz expert in their locality. Hatz diesel engines are used to power a wide range of construction, agricultural, pumping and access machinery. Tel: 01455 622100

Saltscape Landscape Partnership
Salt Habitat Saviours The internationally rare, salt-moulded Cheshire landscape deserves protection, according to Saul Burton, Saltscape Landscape Partnership: ‘Nature’s response to the changing profile of this landscape has not, until now, been fully recognised or valued.’ Ffion Llwyd-Jones reports
O
ver the past three years, the Saltscape Landscape Partnership (funded by The National Lottery’s Heritage Lottery Fund), has delivered 30+ projects (an investment of more than £1.4million), to protect, enhance, restore and celebrate this rare salt landscape. Saul comments: ‘The presence of salt in Cheshire created three rare and valuable wildlife habitats: namely, salt flashes – lakes caused by subsidence as a result of brine pumping; lime beds – produced by spoil from the chemical industry; and, inland salt marsh created both by natural brine springs and spillage from the industry.’ Led by a delivery team from Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside, Saltscape is a partnership between Cheshire West and Chester Council, local town councils, voluntary organisations and the private sector.
Projects include: practical work on the conservation of ancient woodland; grassland and waterways to increase biodiversity across the area; training, education and community; and, heritage preservation. DRAMATIC IMPACT Saltscape includes the area through central Cheshire’s Weaver Valley from Frodsham to the salt towns of Winsford, Northwich and Middlewich. It is characterised by a unique mix of wildlife habitats, post-industrial landscapes, rivers and canals resulting from Cheshire’s industrial salt heritage. Salt underground in Cheshire has dramatically impacted the landscape, bringing economic and environmental change. The rich and often unique features within the salt landscape developed as a result of the underlying geology, which made the area ripe for commercial exploitation.

Saltscape Landscape Partnership
Saltscape – credit Nick Jones
Small-scale exploitation of naturally occurring brine springs escalated following the industrial revolution, when an intensive process of extracting salt (via brine pumping and mining) led to the creation and eventual collapse of large underground cavities, forming ‘flashes’ – waterfilled craters; and lime beds, the waste products from the production of soda ash. The salt works and associated chemical industries made up a crucial part of the area’s economic infrastructure over the last two centuries. REGENERATION Factories and infrastructure have now been cleared away, and areas of derelict land regenerated under England’s national programme of Community Forests. Approximately 350 hectares of former industrial land on the northern edge of Northwich was transformed (via The Mersey Forest Partnership) into the nine interconnected landscapes of the Northwich Woodlands. The Woodlands (encompassing Anderton Nature Park and
28

Marbury Country Park) lies at the heart of the Saltscape. Ashton and Neumann’s Flashes are surrounded by a patchwork of grasslands, marsh, scrub and woodland. Lime beds, containing waste from the production of soda ash, now support flourishing grassland habitats and crucially important plant communities. Lime-loving plants such as creeping willow and the marsh helleborine – more commonly associated with coastal dune systems – like the salty conditions. Birdsfoot trefoil proliferates, attracting the larvae of the rare Dingy Skipper butterfly, a Local Biodiversity Action Plan species. LANDOWNERS AND BIODIVERSIY Partnership working between large and smaller organisations has been a key to bring about the improvements. Cheshire Wildlife Trust continues to work closely with landowners, offering advice, funding, and practical work on the conservation of ancient woodland, grassland and waterways to increase the area’s biodiversity. In the absence of active management, Cliff Brook Meadows

near Acton Bridge had become overgrown with scrub. In partnership with the landowners, and chemical company Inovyn, Cheshire Wildlife Trust has cleared the scrub and replaced boundary fences. A local farmer’s cattle are now grazing the site. TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY The Saltscape Partnership teamed up with RECORD (the biological records office at Chester Zoo) to offer a series of volunteer training days, focusing on species identification and wildlife recording specific to the Saltscape area. Trained volunteers did wildlife surveys to help build a better picture of biodiversity, and assist groups such as Cheshire Wildlife Trust to identify potential habitats in need of restoration. Saltscape also offers free training to local people. Saul comments: ‘A key strand to the Saltscape plan is developing the skills and knowledge of local people.’ Events and courses have ranged from hedge laying, charcoal making, coppicing and woodland management to
woodcraft, basketry and bushcraft. Saul runs many of the courses, including canoe building. Education initiatives include guided tours for children from local primary schools – at the Lion Salt Works, to learn about the industry that employed or affected many of their ancestors, and then the woodlands to learn about the salt industry’s impact on the natural environment. The Saltscape Community Woodland Trail links two Weaver Valley’s heritage features and tourist attractions – the Anderton Boat Lift, and the Lion Salt Works – via an extended and upgraded footpath and footbridge. Maps and leaflets (produced by Friends of Anderton and Marbury and the Mersey Forest), provide an overview of the complex relationship between nature and industry in that area. As part of Saltscape’s digital media project, Mid Cheshire College students produced (with the support of Mako Education), several short promotional films about Saltscape. The project used social media to engage younger participants; Saltscape Partner Manchester

Metropolitan University also co-ordinated ‘Animate!’ a programme of performance events celebrating the salt landscape. HERITAGE Saltscape partner, Canal and Rivers Trust, delivered major projects (involving substantial investment) including the renovation of significant parts of the local area canal and river network, such as upgrading the towpath at the Blue Bridge near Hartford, creating a continuous 9km route between Northwich and Winsford, following the traditional River Weaver towpath. The Trust’s restoration project of the historic River Control Buildings at Anderton Boat Lift was jointly funded by public donations to the Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Work continues on water quality and habitat improvements as part of the initiative. Many other Saltscape projects preserve important salt heritage sites. For example, along the Trent and Mersey Canal, where volunteers recorded and refurbished the original Grade ll-listed mileposts, and at the Three Locks Wall on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Middlewich, a designated Conservation Area. The wall forms part of the fabric of the three locks system including sluices and weirs alongside the River Croco in Middlewich. Also in

Middlewich, a sandstone monument on Salinae Fields celebrates the importance of the town and its waterways as a key salt route that runs through to the Anderton Boat Lift, Lion Salt Works and the ports. People were invited to try stone carving, and see the stone worked on throughout the life of Saltscape. Friends of Weaver Parkway were also assisted to install interpretation boards along the river in Winsford, allowing walkers to visualise the huge impact of the salt industry on that part of the town. LEGACY The Saltscape project ends in 2017. Saul comments: ‘I hope the collective impact of so many important causes under the banner of Saltscape will mean the project’s legacy will continue long into the future.’ Since 2003, HLF has committed grant-aid totalling £220million to 124 Landscape Partnership schemes across the UK. The HLF’s LP programme is a grant scheme available for landscape-scale projects: ‘Alongside essential conservation work to the built heritage and a wide range of training opportunities which enable people to learn new skills, the projects also help protect valuable habitats and enhance local biodiversity.’

Glee 2017
Bolder, brighter and fresher Glee is as much a part of the gardening calendar as pruning, the first cut of the lawn and cold crisp mornings that accompany the first trips to the greenhouse. But unlike these annual milestones, Glee is changing; it’s growing and developing for the greater good of garden retailing. Jana Silver reports
A
s garden retailing continues to look at ways to adapt to changing consumer spending habits, as well as attracting a new pool of customers, so must Glee look at what it offers to the industry it represents. This year, visitors to the show will find a bigger, fresher and bolder Glee – full of innovative feature content, tangible business advice and the strongest collection of brands ready and willing to forge relationships with retailers. Matthew Mein, Glee’s Event Director, told The Landscaper: “Glee 2017 is the start of an exciting new chapter for the show. We’ll still be offering the core elements that are the main reason why retailers attend, but we’re also building additional content that will add real value, and provide our visitors with inspiration and valuable advice that will help them to future proof their businesses. All of this will be underpinned by our new look, that we believe is demonstrative of the changes that our industry is undertaking, through adopting more innovative and contemporary approaches to retailing. “We are confident that the changes we have made means that Glee is now, more than ever, an event for all aspects of garden retailing – from sourcing new products, to gathering information on how to tap into a younger consumer demographic, inspirational merchandising advice, future-facing business concepts and the freshest trend information. Glee is an event for everyone from the category buyers to the chief executives. We guarantee that a day at Glee is a day well spent.”

mowers
The TimeMaster Toro has announced the launch of two new TimeMaster models. Launching this summer, the two new models feature Briggs & Stratton engines and will be available with either recoil or electric start options. These mowers are perfectly suited for large lawns as the 76cm cutting width covers more ground than smaller mowers and may reduce mowing time by as much as 40%*. Both models feature the Automatic Drive System with traction assist. This automatically adjusts the mower’s pace to the walking speed of the user and assists with maintaining a constant speed even when used on more challenging terrain. The Quick Stow handle-bar stores vertically for easy compact storage and adjusts to ensure a comfortable mowing experience for any operator. Continuing with the ease of use, the TimeMaster adopts a blade brake clutch (BBC), allowing users to stop the cutter blade while the engine is running as they travel over nongrassed areas or are emptying the bag. Users are also able to easily adjust the cutting height using two easy-to-use levers, adjusting the front and rear axles independently. The new models provide a cleaner cut as they have a re-designed blade for improved collection. A Dual-Force cutting system also helps maintain a healthier lawn, by repeatedly chopping the grass clippings into tiny pieces and returning them back into the lawn to provide nutrients and
moisture to the soil. Christopher Cooper, Product Marketing Manager from Toro told The Landscaper : “The launch of the new TimeMaster models demonstrates the continued innovation we offer at Toro. We are consistently reviewing all our products to ensure our customers get the best and most current technology. The latest models offer new and improved functionality, but remain easy to use and maintain high quality turf conditions.” TimeMaster mowers are available from Toro’s Dealer network now. www.toro.com/en-gb
Ten percent off cylinders With Reesink Turfcare offering ten percent off all genuine Toro cylinders, bought this September, now’s the time to stock up and ensure a good supply and the best possible cylinder cut at the best possible price. According to agronomists, cylinder mowing is the best option for grass, delivering the cleanest of cuts and healthiest of swards. This is because the blades spin
38
www.landscapermagazine.com
vertically creating a scissoring action against the bottom blade to cut the grass leaves. With the workings of a cylinder mower so intricate, it would be unwise to upset the equilibrium by putting anything other than genuine parts in your Toro. Fitting an inferior ‘will-fit’ part against a genuine Toro cylinder removes the guarantee of a consistently accurate cut right down to 2.5mm with no risk of turf damage. And as Michael Hampton, Reesink’s Turfcare parts manager, says: “It’s just not worth the risk. “Cylinders are intrinsic to achieving a superior aftercut appearance and all Toro cylinder mowers, from the heavy duty LT3340 to the accessible CT2240 compact triple, can be given a new lease of life with cost effective replacement cylinders. It’s critical to replace your
mowers cylinders at the right time with the right parts for the best quality of cut all the time.” Toro cylinders balance perfectly with genuine Toro bottom blades, reducing the need for constant cylinder grinding and allowing for more efficient mowing operation. They also produce the cleanest cut, which promotes a healthier turf and results in the best after-cut
appearance possible. Available in 4, 6, 8 or 10-blade cylinder configurations to fit all cylinder mowers, including the Greensmaster and Reelmaster ranges, customers can take advantage of the cylinder promotion through their local genuine Toro parts dealer or service centre www reesinkturfcare.co.uk

Lawnmower man drives the distance Prison officer Andy Maxfield from Inskip in Lancashire has completed his epic journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a John Deere lawn tractor, while raising several thousand pounds for Alzheimer’s Society. The ‘Driving the Distance for Dementia’ Challenge set off from John O’Groats at 8am on Tuesday 25th July 2017, and the Guinness world record attempt was completed when Andy and his support team arrived at Land’s End on Sunday 30th July at 4.45pm – a total measured distance of 874.3 miles travelled in five days, eight hours and 45 minutes.
Andy is hoping that Guinness will verify his achievement as he drove the whole distance on his own on an unmodified lawn tractor, which has not been attempted before. “It was a fantastic team effort all round – we certainly raised awareness for Alzheimer’s Society and we all had some fun along the way,” he said. “The advance planning went really well and apart from a couple of detours on the journey, nothing really went wrong apart from the weather - but even John Deere can’t control that!” said Andy. “The real star of the challenge for

Mowing sloping grass verges can be difficult, and even dangerous. If you have large areas of steep verges to mow, and a walk behind mower is not option, what is needed is a powerful lawn tractor, with excellent traction. The XT3 lawn tractors from Cub Cadet are designed for the toughest, most demanding conditions, driven by powerful Kawasaki engines and equipped with ultra-strong components – the Cub Cadet XT3s are brimming with strength and power for even the most precarious of cuts. The four models within the line up are the most powerful in the XT Enduro Series™ and feature the ‘All-GroundTraction System’, which provides optimum traction on tough terrain, thanks to the mechanical differential lock. This provides unsurpassed traction on all terrains. The 38cm tight turning circle adds to this manoeuvrability, making it perfect for difficult surfaces and challenging layouts. The powerful and reliable V-Twin 726cm³ Kawasaki engines on all models provides power and higher torque, whilst the hydrostatic

solid and corrosion resistant e-coated frame provides long lasting protection and class leading stability. Within the range are two rear collection models, the XT3 QR95 (95cm / 38” cutting width) and the XT3 QR106 (106cm / 42” cutting width), both of which benefit from Cub Cadet’s Direct Collect® system which transports clippings into the large 360 litre collection bag in the shortest, most efficient route. drive system, (operated by foot pedal control) provides a smooth and comfortable ride. This line up of ride-on mowers has been designed for ambitious operators who require heavy-duty construction and professional-grade engines to cut through even the tallest, densest of grass, in the most difficult of conditions. The machines have been developed to tackle the most challenging terrain and conditions that demand more power, with greater agility, precision and control. The market leading cut, along with the extremely strong drive system with drive harmonisation, provides smooth, efficient power delivery and cutting performance, whilst the
There are also two side discharge models to complete the collection, the XT3 QS127 (127cm / 50” cutting width) and the XT3 QS137 (137 cm / 54” cutting width) featuring a fabricated cutting deck. Nick Hills, General Manager for Cub Cadet UK, said: “The All-Ground-Traction-System provides the ultimate stability, providing security to the user, whilst giving the perfect cut. The heavy-duty construction, professional-grade engines, and ultra-tough components like Cub Cadet’s legendary direct shaft drive, all combine to make the XT3 the ultimate garden tractor.” www.cubcadet.co.uk

mowers
Spiderman Spider remote controlled mowers have been sold in the UK since 2004 and are the ideal machines for maintaining steep slopes and banks that are difficult to manage with brushcutters or ride-on machines. Today, they are distributed by T H WHITE Machinery Imports Ltd, the specialist division of T H WHITE Group set up last year following the acquisition of the Ferris and Wright mower brands from IPU together with the Spider range, previously handled by Ransomes Jacobsen. One recent purchaser is Pip Turley, the proprietor of PT Landscapes, based at Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire. For the past 20 years he has been responsible for the groundscare at Howard Tenens premises in the southwest of England. Howard Tenens Ltd is one of the largest privately managed logistics companies, providing tailored storage solutions with over 3,500,000 square feet of high quality warehousing across the UK. Explaining the reasons behind the purchase of his Spider 1 mower he said, “Many of the properties in the Howard Tenens portfolio are sunken below the original ground level to mitigate their impact on the surrounding area,” he said. “This results in many grassed banks and slopes that have to be maintained. I’ve always used brushcutters to keep the grass banks presentable, but this was becoming ever-more time consuming as Tenen’s opened more facilities
agrigarden machines
in the southwest, so I needed a solution that would reduce the time and enable me to focus on other areas. “I put a proposal to Howard Tenens and they contacted T H WHITE, who came down with a selection of machines for me to demo. I’d already discounted tracked vehicles as they have a tendency to tear the turf, so when I saw the Spider, I was literally, blown away. One bank at Tenen’s depot in Sharpness used to take between 3-4 days to cut with brushcutters; now it takes less than a day. It’s an amazing piece of kit and one that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to other contractors.” www.spider-cz.com

Improved coverage and dramatic time savings Readyhedge of Eckington near Pershore are leading suppliers of instant hedging and screening to landscape designers and gardeners. Set up by husband and wife team Simon and Sue Williamson in 2003, the nursery produces container-grown hedging from rootstock, fully acclimatised to British conditions and ready to plant straight from the container. There’s no need for machinery, hedging can be bent to conform to any desired design, and once on-site it can be planted easily by one or two people. Their ‘Hedgeplants’ hedging cuts planting time by at least half when compared to placing individual plants and is available in an unrivalled range of varieties. Hedging is trimmed by hand before despatch for dependable uniformity, and is proven to deliver great results. The nursery currently extends to around 20 acres with a huge range of varieties and sizes growing in close rows. This has always posed a challenge to spraying operations, especially as they back onto residential areas. Traditionally Readyhedge have had to use 15 litre knapsack sprayers for the application of pesticides, fungicides and foliar feed. Conscious of the noise output of 2 stroke knapsack sprayers, working hours have been limited by the proximity of housing. Besides being labour- intensive, this operation has been very time consuming, not ideal when you frequently have to fit limited windows within West Country weather systems! But now all this has changed. In 2016, Nursery Manager Liam Ireland contacted Team Sprayers in Ely and together they developed designs for a special single boom, tractor mounted sprayer that can effectively spray their hedge stock rows
which are configured in 10, 12 and 15 metre runs. The key to the design is an extendable counter balance weighing 300 Kgs. This enables sprayer operator Gareth Beck to extending the 3 section boom to its 12m length with ‘hurling’ jets projecting the spray the final 3m on the 15m rows. The boom is fully height adjustable so all varieties can be sprayed from box hedges to 1.80 hawthorn. “The new Team sprayer has allowed us to establish a much more efficient spraying regime” says Gareth. “Variable weather conditions are no longer such a problem as we can respond quicker, the hedges look even healthier than before and application times have been greatly reduced. And of course the new sprayer is much quieter that the knapsack sprayers so we can operate throughout daylight hours without upsetting the neighbours! We can now complete spray operations in a day which were taking up to a week.” The Team sprayer Sigma Solo is based upon their successful Sigma model with a 1000 litre tank so refilling is minimized. A low mounted video camera on the boom assembly warns the driver when otherwise unseen obstacles are a risk. Team have designed and built a robust boom in steel tubular sections with a three dimensional structure that guarantees years of strength and durability plus a good ride on all surfaces. The on sprayer controls are simple to use and clearly presented. There is a 25 litre induction hopper for the chemicals which incorporates a canister wash facility. There is also a hand wash for the operator and protective clothes locker. www.team-sprayers.com www.readyhedgeltd.com

Question Time at SALTEX The Amenity Forum will once again be hosting its ever popular Question Time at SALTEX 2017. The event is modelled upon the BBC programme where a panel of people drawn from the sector respond to audience questions on a range of topical issues concerning amenity management. Professor John Moverley OBE, Independent Chairman of the Forum, will act as ‘David Dimbleby’ and this year’s panel includes: Jim Croxton, Chief Executive Officer, BIGGA Will Kay, Managing Director, Languard Mark Pyrah, Landscaper & Industrial Business Manager UK and Ireland, IICL Tony Saunders, Area Manager & Professional Head of Environment, JSD Rail If previous years are repeated, there will be a full house and a lively debate. There is certainly no shortage of issues to be discussed. It will take place at 2pm on the first day (November 1st) of SALTEX being held at the NEC in Birmingham. John Moverley says ‘We are delighted to have been invited to once again host this popular event at SALTEX. The IOG are supportive members of the Amenity Forum and this Question Time allows opportunity at this important national event to discuss and debate key issues surrounding amenity management’ A key element in putting together
Chemical Free WOLF-Garten has developed a weeding range, to help create the perfect, weed free lawn, without the use of chemicals. The range consists of a garden Weeder, and two additions to the multi-change range. The Garden Weeder enables effortless weeding, without the need to even bend down thanks to its D-Grip, soft-zone handle, with a generous length of 1100mm. The tool works by planting its deep reaching claws, with two stainless steel blades, into the ground, surrounding the weed and its roots from all directions – there is no escaping this weed grabber. By placing your foot on the foot step, which is foldable for ease of storage, a gentle pull back is all that is needed to remove even the most embedded weeds. Once removed, the ejection system means that the weed is released from the tool, without you ever needing to touch it. a professional approach to amenity maintenance is by adopting an integrated approach ensuring all options are considered and the optimum management programme chosen for specific situations. A key date in the amenity calendar is Amenity Forum conference and the programme announced this year promises to be as topical and relevant as ever. This major conference has very much become the must attend event for all involved or having an interest in weed, pest and disease control matters in amenity. It also can appeal to a wider audience for those just wanting to understand more about this important and diverse sector. The conference will be held on Thursday, October 12th, at the Pirelli Stadium, Burton on Trent. The title ‘Keeping Britain Moving’ has been chosen to align with the Forum’s ongoing and very successful campaign to communicate to the wider public the important and essential nature of weed, pest and disease management and why it impacts upon every UK citizen. have, or you can choose one to suit your needs. The Weeding Knife is manufactured from high quality steel and has a head width of 4cm. The integrated foot rest provides extra leverage making even the toughest of weeds no match for it. Finally, the Weed Extractor, also part of the multi-change family and manufactured from high quality steel, is ideal for removing deep rooted weeds, with its design making it easy to push into the ground. Once inserted all that it needed is a gentle twist and pull, and the weed is out. www.barrus.co.uk
Professional qualifications for the amenity industry STRI Group, the sports turf consultancy, has announced the training dates of its amenity sector qualification courses.
weeds The professional training courses take place during autumn and winter 2017 at STRI’s HQ in West Yorkshire, and include both introductory and professionally recognised qualifications. Courses consist of BASIS (Amenity Horticulture), Foundation Award in Amenity Horticulture, Fertiliser Advisers Certificate and Training Scheme (FACTS) and Nutrient Management Planning (NMP). Each qualification is recognised by BASIS, the independent standards setting and auditing organisation for the pesticide, fertiliser and allied industries. In-depth training, and dedicated student support, will be provided by STRI research field experts, Dr Ruth Mann and Dr Christian Spring. STRI’s training courses allow individuals to build their skills and confidence by keeping their knowledge up-to-date, and enable career progression within the amenity industry. Courses include dedicated turf sessions, which have been specifically developed by STRI, to meet qualification requirements. Courses will be held at STRI’s world-class research facilities in Bingley, and food and refreshments will be available. Andrew Kerr, Head Greenkeeper at Surbiton Golf Club, said: “As a qualified greenkeeper and having been in the industry for 20 years, I thought that I knew a lot about being an agronomist – that is until I was introduced to BASIS. I completed the Foundation BASIS at Harrogate and this encouraged me to do the Professional BASIS. “Two separate weeks of lectures and intensive study grounded and enthused me in everything to do with grass, weeds and chemicals. The written, practical and verbal examinations were challenging but now I know that I am a more knowledgeable and effective greenkeeper.” info@strigroup.com The BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection - Amenity Horticulture Week One: 9 – 13 October, Week two: 6 – 10 November, Exams: 4, 5, 6 December The BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection – Amenity Horticulture is the national qualification for all field, sales and technical staff (FSTS) who advise on the use, selling or supplying of plant protection products in the amenity industry, head greenkeepers, head groundsmen, and course managers. Foundation Award in Amenity Horticulture 31 October - 02 November The Foundation Award offers an introduction to understanding turfgrass management, including the use of professional pesticides in the Amenity Horticulture sector. The course is ideal for deputy greenkeepers, groundsmen and landscapers who wish to then pursue full accreditation
through attainment of the BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection – Amenity Horticulture. Fertiliser Advisers Certificate and Training Scheme (FACTS) 13-15 November, 7-8 December (exam on 8th Dec) The FACTS Turf Certification and Training Scheme is an independent scheme for advisers in plant nutrient management. This course provides a fundamental understanding of fertilisers, turf nutrition, and the environmental impacts of fertilisers. Resourceful, innovative and passionate As the days shorten and summer gives way to autumn, BIGGA members turn their attentions to the process of winter maintenance, developing plans that they hope will see the course emerge better than ever when spring arrives. Karl Hansell reports KARL HANSELL GOLF EDITOR The summer of 2017 has been especially difficult for the UK’s greenkeepers, given extraordinary levels of rain coupled with the seasonal warmth. Such conditions are a breeding ground for turf diseases, and it couldn’t have come at a more difficult time. New restrictions on fungicides and the loss of assets such as carbendazim, used to control worm casts. But the greenkeeping profession has never been more educated and BIGGA members are well equipped to deal with anything thrown at them. In modern turf management education starts early and that’s why September sees the return of the Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year award. The award supplements the established Toro Student Greenkeeper prize, which is now in its 27th year. Both are a celebration of the hard work done by the industry’s most talented greenkeepers and for the winners, to be announced in the next edition of this magazine, the future is extremely bright. Ours is a highly-skilled profession, undertaken by passionate individuals and as BIGGA celebrates three successful decades with the 30th annual BIGGA National

Championship at Verulam Golf Club during October, we can reflect on how far the industry has come. I paid a visit to Tyneside Golf Club this month, to visit Course Manager David Simpson and his team. On the outskirts of Newcastle, the club has been there since 1879, making it one of the oldest in the country. This is the kind of place where, back in the day, greenkeepers weren’t allowed in through the front door. And yet now, following the hard work of Dave, his predecessor Steve Pope, and generations of greenkeepers, the club acknowledges their greenstaff as an integral part of the club management structure. When it came to developing a new par 3 course and practice facilities, the greens team were entrusted with the responsibility, and they’ve done an incredible job. Greenkeepers are resourceful, innovative and passionate about their role, and as BIGGA enters its fourth decade of representing our members within the wider golf and turf management industries, we say long may this continue. karl@bigga.co.uk www.bigga.org.uk

Star Trek The Nissan Navara was the UK’s most popular pickup truck during the first half of 2017, thanks to its smooth ride, low running costs and practicality. Nissan recently broadened the appeal of the Navara with the rugged and stylish Trek-1, and Liam Campbell put it to the test in the Lake District LIAM CAMPBELL AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR UPGRADED FOR OFF-ROAD Fitted with a number of extra stylish and practical features, the Trek-1 looks and feels at home off the road. The Navara Trek-1 also comes with black side styling bars, black 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels that are exclusive to Trek-1 and a new load bed cover. Made from high-grade durable plastic and finished in black or white, the load bed cover is hinged at the end closest to the cab and lifts easily using a single gas strut at either side. Sadly though, the Trek-1 still sports the standard Continental road tyres, which tend to lose traction on rocks and mud. CAB AND INTERIOR Firmly positioned towards the lifestyle end of the market, the Navara benefits from greater levels of comfort and a larger specification than most of its competitors. However, the Navara seating leaves a lot to be desired; the low positioning combined with the high dashboard means the driver’s view is largely obstructed close to the bumper. The dashboard has borrowed a lot of styling cues from the car range, and is composed of hard-wearing, black plastics with chrome highlights. There are plenty of storage spaces, including a large central cubby, although the glovebox could be bigger.

Forestry cutter Bobcat has extended the company’s new range of forestry cutter attachments with a third model – the new FRC150ST – for use on the smaller Bobcat S630/H and S650/H skid-steer loaders and T590/H and T650/H compact tracked loaders. The new FRC150ST complements Bobcat’s recently launched FRC150HT and FRC200HT high torque forestry cutter attachments, which are compatible with the larger Bobcat T770H and T870H compact tracked loaders, S770H and S850H skid-steer loaders and the A770H all-wheel steer loader and provide cutting widths of 1.5 and 2.0 m, respectively, Based on feedback from the field, the 1.5 m wide FRC150ST incorporates many improvements over the previous FRC150 model. Among the improvements, the FRC150ST is manufactured almost entirely from Hardox, with a specially designed new fixed motor offering greater output and efficiency. The enhanced design also offers a new, lighter drum, with carbide teeth, new hose routing and greater performance and manoeuvrability. The FRC150ST forestry cutter mulches trees and
underbrush in minutes − leaving a carpet of mulch behind when clearing trees and bushes for any kind of application. The variable front gate can be adjusted to provide the coarseness or fineness of mulch that the finishing requires. Providing a cutting width of 1.5 m, the FRC150ST forestry cutter is designed for continuous work on bushes and trees 100 to 120 mm in diameter, intermittent use for trees with a diameter from 150 to 200 mm and occasional use on trees 220 to 260 mm in diameter. Applications are very varied and range from those in agriculture including vineyards, orchards, nurseries and tree care; forestry including cutting fire breaks in woods and forests, clearing work and removing unwanted undergrowth and trees; wildlife, national park and country estate management; perimeter maintenance of facilities such as schools and military bases; to site development in construction; land clearing for landscaping and recreation projects; maintenance work on vegetation next to pathways and other right-of-ways, utilities, railway lines and roads as well as clean-up work after storms and floods. www.bobcat.com

Welsh woodlands The need to bring existing woodlands in Wales back into management must not be overlooked by an emphasis on new woodland creation, says the Royal Forestry Society (RFS). While broadly welcoming many points within the National Assembly for Wales’s Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee report Branching out: a new ambition for woodland policies, the RFS also expressed disappointment that there was no commitment to funding research into building greater resilience into woodlands. The RFS was among organisations to submit written evidence to the committee and its Chief Executive Simon Lloyd says: “The loss of forest cover in Wales is a real concern for everyone, including the RFS, but there’s arguably too much emphasis in the report’s recommendations on woodland creation and not enough on woodland management. “ Existing woodlands are an important resource and bringing them back into management must be central to the Welsh government’s woodland strategy.” The report acknowledges that: “40% of Welsh woodlands are thought to be unmanaged (mainly privately owned broadleaf woodlands), resulting in a lack of biodiversity and the potential environmental benefits not being realised. We urge the Welsh
Government to bring back the Glastir Woodland Management grant scheme, and to set a target to halve the proportion of unmanaged woodlands in Wales.” However, of its 13 recommendations none makes specific mention of the need to bring back woodlands into management. On resilience, Recommendation 11 of the report says: “The Welsh Government must work with stakeholders to ensure its tree health strategy demonstrates the lessons learnt from the outbreaks of Ash Dieback and Larch Disease”, but this, the RFS argues does not go far enough. Mr Lloyd said: “ We called for well funded and coordinated research at a UK level for the development of management approaches for increasing forest resilience. While this might fall outside the immediate remit of the Woodland Strategy, funding for research is an important part of the wider conversation over initiatives and incentives, particularly post Brexit, to ensure we have thriving forests into the future. But he added: “ We were pleased to see that the RFS views had been taken into consideration in many areas, particularly the need for better education and training , and we are fully behind the recognition of the part woodlands and commercial forestry have to play in the economy and the future of Wales.”
Full range at Confor Woodland Först, is set to showcase its complete range of wheeled, tracked and PTO machines, including the new ST6 P petrol model, at this year’s Confor Woodland show at Longleat Estate. The ST6 P, Först’s first sub 750kg woodchipper, was launched to the UK market earlier this year and is an extension of Först’s popular range of six-inch capacity machines. Powered by a 37hp V twin petrol engine, the compact and lightweight woodchipper matches the strength and performance that users have come to expect from Först’s diesel powered machines. Visitors to brand’s stand will be able to get hands on with the product and talk to the Först experts to discuss the
benefits of switching over to a petrol machine. Also on stand will be Först’s XR8 Traxion, an 8” x 10” tracked machine that can traverse banks due to its parallel linkage system, its original ST6 wheeled woodchipper and its high performance PT8 machine, alongside the ST8, TR6 and TR8 models. Doug Ghinn, Director at Först, said: “We are very passionate about the Först brand and how far we’ve come within the industry in such a short period of time. The diverse line-up of machines we’re exhibiting at Confor Woodland demonstrates this, as we now offer the complete range of woodchipper solutions to arborists, farmers, contractors and landscapers. >>

Easy Garden Screens… Our range of decorative modular screens are designed to create visually stunning rooms and backdrops within your garden. Whether you’re hiding unwanted items, creating a wall to plant against in your borders, bringing new life to tired fence panels or simply seeking some privacy – an Easy Garden Screen is the perfect solution. Manufactured from high quality material using state of the art machinery… Our 1200x600x20mm two-part laser cut screens are available in two surface finishes. The first, a high grade 1.6mm galvanised steel finished with a 110micron polyester powder coating to create a weather and scratch resistant surface. The second, an ASTM weathering steel as made popular by the U.S. Steel Co. this material resists the corrosive effects of all types of weather by forming a layer of dark brown oxidation over the metal which looks like authentic rust. In simple terms, the surface of the steel is allowed to oxidise and this ‘rusty layer’ forms a protective coating that will resist the effects of further corrosion.
RGB Colour Changing LED Lighting… We currently have three designs available; Geometric, Zebra and Bamboo and all of our screens come with the option of LED lighting. Our unique ‘plug & play’ system has been designed with ease of install in mind. Our colour changing RGB LED light tape comes with a quality self-adhesive backing which can be easily installed within the decorative screen unit. The colour change is controlled by a joy wheel remote control with a 25m range and you have an astounding 640,000 colours to choose from. Our LED tape is IP67 rated meaning its perfect for outside use in all weather conditions.

The Design Possibilities are Endless… We have a range of posts, support bars and feet that make the design possibilities endless when it comes to incorporating the Easy Garden Screen into your garden project. The screens can be bolted together with posts and feet to form free standing privacy screens, hung from the wall to create illuminated wall art or elevated with our static posts to create permanent divisions or back drops within your garden. SNEAK PEAK! We will be launching our innovative Light Towers in Autumn 2017 to complement the Easy Garden Screen Range of decorative Screens. Our Light Towers have been designed to mirror the patterns on our screens and are manufactured using the same high quality materials and methods. The 6ft tall Light towers have a remote controlled colour changing LED flood lamp, attached to a base section that can be bolted to the ground to secure the light tower making them safe for domestic and commercial applications. Unique in its simplicity Forest Pennant, the commercial brand of Forest of Dean Stone Firms has completed a public art commission in Bristol, supplying bespoke cut slabs of Pennant sandstone for a reinstated public highway and social space. Forest of Dean Pennant sandstone was specified due to local provenance, sourced from the company’s Barnhill Quarry. Muf architecture/art also considered the Stone Firms’ independent PAS 2050 verification as a criterion. The Gloucestershire-based stone company also supplied a flight of steps with eased edges and non-slip resin infill treads and a back plate for a basketball hoop. Located on Trenchard Street in Bristol city centre, the public realm is narrow, just 18 metres wide and steeply sloping, described as a canyon between new build, 11-storey University of Bristol halls of residence, Orchard Heights and a multi-storey car park. Muf architecture/art was commissioned by Unite Students to treat the space as an opportunity for public art, satisfying Bristol City Council’s

106 agreement for public art. The challenge was to deliver a bespoke scheme on a site constrained by its topography and on a limited budget. It is a scheme of pared back drama using a very limited palette of stone in the form of raw slabs of Forest of Dean Pennant sandstone, aggregates and plain cast concrete, with simple detailing where one material meets another, and in the design of the hand rails and balustrades,” comments Katherine Clarke, artist partner, muf architecture/art. The practice worked with Bristol City Council’s Public Arts Officer and Planning team to progress the project through planning. Katherine continues, “Natural stone was used to create a landscape of informal seating and to take up the level differences where steps and ramps meet, and to ground the

main flight of steps from the upper level. “We wanted to use local products and local skills as far as possible; local in miles to reduce embodied energy in transport costs, to make something relevant to the place and to keep capital costs circulating, as far as possible, in the local economy. Rather than buying stone from China or India.” While unique in its simplicity the implementation of the design was a challenge. Communication was crucial. Forest Pennant welcomed Katherine and practice associate, Mathilde Lebreton to Bixslade stoneworks and Barnhill quarry. “When you’re pushing the limit of a material you inevitably need time for everyone to understand the design intentions and find the best way to realise the project, by knowing all the parameters and constraints and how to overcome them,” commented Mathilde Lebreton, architect, muf architecture/art. “The design detail was advanced through visits to the quarry to identify the most cost effective and technically viable way to maximise the dramatic use of very large slabs of stone with a natural oxidised surface, contrasting with the blue/grey cut face,” continued Mathilde. “Achieving the accuracy of 15mm joint between each block of stone was remarkable. The slabs gave us the opportunity to answer design intention and provide protection as a balustrade at the same time.” Paul Blake, production manager, Forest of Dean Stone Firms said: “This design was unlike anything we’d seen before. It was the first time a client had created a model using sliced bread! Our stone is a natural material so needs to be cut and worked to achieve precision. The design
required 15mm joints and for the slabs to be positioned in a descending/ascending order while maintaining the natural surface finish. It was a challenge but we’re incredibly proud of the result.” www.forestpennant.com

Exceptional play whatever the weather East Yorkshire’s newest family attraction, William’s Den, is enjoying a very busy first season, and it’s not hard to see why with such exceptional play facilities. Timberplay were delighted to be part of this unique attraction, designing and delivering the outdoor play area. William’s Den sought to create an attraction that provided the very best naturally inspired play opportunities, from the UK’s largest timber indoor play areas with a difference, to sand and water sites, playful landscaping, challenging outdoor equipment, and den building. It seems the leisure market was waiting for a site such as Williams Den as it has been fully booked for most of the summer holidays. Timberplay worked with William’s Den to create outdoor play which embraced landscaping to create a space which appeals to children across a wide age range. The inclusion of sand and water pumps and channels boosts the play value within the site significantly. Older children have the challenge of the Climbing Structure and the thrill of the cableway. Toddlers can embrace the role play within the Platform House or fly as high as they dare in the Cradle Swing. Christian Carver, Co-Owner at William’s Den comments:“What makes William’s Den really stand out is the way they
have embraced the landscape, with mounds, embankments, a natural amphitheatre, climbing boulder stack, log bridges and tunnels all combining to deliver an imaginative play environment. This is exploited further with the addition of den building materials – to inspire children to create their own woodland hideaway.”
Pristine Patios Ecofective Path & Patio Weed & Moss Killer and ecofective Path, Patio & Decking Cleaner offer gardeners two easy ways to bring their patio or decking back to its former glory. For complete control of moss, annual and perennial weeds on hard surfaces, ecofective Path & Patio Weed & Moss Killer is effective at low temperatures and can be used throughout the year. The main ingredient is acetic acid, a natural element that effectively burns weeds and moss, with visible results after just one hour. Once applied and left to dry, the treated area is safe for children and pets. Ecofective Path, Patio & Decking Cleaner can be used as a multi-purpose garden cleaner, which removes dirt and moss from patio flags, decking, conservatories, furniture, outside walls and fencing, driveways and sheds. No scrubbing or rinsing is necessary – simply apply, leave, and the results can be seen within 24 hours (depending on weather conditions at time of application). It is suitable to use on a wide range of outside structures and materials, including glass; plastic; wood; concrete; tarmac and canopies and fabrics.

New Creeping Ryegrass Mixture Hurrells Seeds have introduced a new CSI Creeping Ryegrass mix. The benefits of this include: High Shoot density, quick repairing ability, close mowing, great colour and superb ground cover. Other existing Creeping Ryegrass mixtures on the market only have between two and three creeping plants in every ten plants. However for CSI Corsica eight or nine in every ten plants creeps, with regenerative tiller plants. This creeping rye has density up to 100% better in excess of any turf perennial. The grass seed mixture contains: • 30% CSI CREEPING RYEGRASS • 25% COLOSSEUM WINTER ACTIVE PERENNIALRYEGRASS • 25% EUROCORDUS HIGH RATED STRI DWARF PERENNIAL RYEGRASS • 20% BECKHAM HIGH RATED STRI DWARF PERENNIAL RYEGRASS The selection of different grasses makes the mix great in many ways. From the winter active side to the creeping ryegrass element. Garry Poole from Turf Amenity Supplies commented; “I am very impressed when I use Hurrells CSI, It has superb turf quality combined with the best ground cover I have ever seen . I wholeheartedly recommend it.”
The Colosseum in the mixture is a winter active fine leafed hard wearing dwarf perennial ryegrass that grows in soil temperatures down to five degrees Celsius (other grasses require at least 10-12 degrees Celsius). Meaning it’s not too early to sow grass seed! The inclusion of Eurocordus and Beckham two Dwarf Perennial Ryegrasses gives this grass seed mix a premium fine leaved finish that’s still hardwearing 01377 271400 www.hmseeds.com
Pretty in pink The team at Wyevale Nurseries spends time following colour trends to try to ensure its new range matches that of current fashions (August, 2017). Within the Hereford-based nurseries’ 2018 promotional catalogue, the most popular flower colour is pink with more than 40 of its promotions flowering with a rose hue. Adam Dunnett, Sales & Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “Within home interior design neutrals might be the ‘in’ thing this year but in the garden, we are seeing a trend towards more vibrant colours. “Pink has always been a popular choice alongside white. Within our new 2018 catalogue 35% of the promotions flower pink, 20% white, 15% orange, 9% purple, 9% blue, 6% yellow and 6% red. “Interestingly, orange is the colour which has increased the most in the past two years. In our 2016
74
www.landscapermagazine.com
catalogue, seven promotions were orange and in 2018 this has increased to 17. “We feel people are opting for flower beds which will burst with bright orange perhaps for a tropical vibe. This would mix well with yellow, red and purple to give a warm and vibrant sensation. The general public seem to be getting more adventurous with colour and the brighter the better. These lively colours are what Ben Gregory, our Product Development Manager, saw as a trend during his visit to the California Spring Trials. “We are interested to speak to retailers on what they feel will be popular in the future. More than 60% of our promotions are pastel colours with 27% more tropical orange, yellow and red. Colour trends are important to us and we will continue to offer our customers the most fashionable shades in the coming years.” www.wyevalenurseries.co.uk

lighting
PAINT IT BLACK Black is often the colour of choice for outdoor lighting fixtures, perhaps because it is perceived as a safe neutral choice, however, to me it can sometimes be a gloomy or depressive colour as typified by the Rolling Stones 1966 classic “Paint it Black“ Martin Bennett reports There are no Black trees, plants or grass, so why not experiment with colour more naturally associated with the garden, such as green? Black paint is often used in low cost fixtures, and tends to fade to grey quickly unless more expensive UV protective paint has been used. A green powder coated finish can also fade, but normally just to a lighter, pleasing tone. To avoid fading or photo-degradation to use the technical term, choose lights made from aluminium treated with an anodised finish. This is not paint but an electro-chemical process using dyes to create different colours. Black, Silver, and Titanium colour finishes are available and often look contemporary and smart. Other more expensive alternatives are: 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel: This will keep its shiny look indefinitely provided it is cleaned on a regular basis with clean water otherwise it’s possible for some brown stains known as “tea staining” to appear. Brass: Probably the best material of all for garden lighting. Pure Brass will quickly turn to a brown colour, aged or antique finish brass will keep its attractive rustic appearance for many years. Copper: The original shiny finish of natural, real copper will quickly change to a darker finish and eventually to a green Verdigris effect. If the shiny finish is preferred, this can be achieved by coating with acrylic clear lacquer before installation. Wood: Natural wood is of course a natural choice for gardens and outdoor landscapes, but can be difficult to Black Anodised Finish maintain and keep

looking good. Teak needs to be sealed on a regular basis. If the fixture is made from treated and heat sealed Radiata Pine it is likely that cracks will appear especially in prolonged periods of dry weather. However, these Smartspike 260 Brass cracks are rarely Rustic Bronze Finish anything to worry about and will not affect the strength of the wooden post or sleeper. Take a look in your local children’s playground - you will see numerous cracks in the wooden climbing frames but they are still absolutely safe. Some say that You ‘Can’t Always Get What You Want’ with garden lighting but in my view you certainly can. You may be pleasantly surprised at how smart the different materials and finishes look throughout daylight hours where the light fittings take on an ornamental value of their own, giving complete ‘Satisfaction’ to you and the customer. THE
LANDSCAPER
By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe
Dear Fans Last month I reported that our offices are devoid of greenery despite the nature of the magazine we publish. I have received a written upbraid from our Dear Leader. He has been nurturing a couple of Venus Fly Traps (Dionaea muscipula) that he fell in love with at The Chelsea Flower Show. As a punishment for mis-reporting, I have been awarded with the responsibility of babysitting these insect devouring plants whilst he is visiting all the trade shows that take place between now and January. These are not easy plants. You can only use rainwater or distilled water and the growing season is March to November during which time you should let them stand in about an inch of water to create bog-like conditions. This was not in my job description which was handwritten on a yellow sticky note. The average British tradesperson, earning £355 per week, would have to work for 132 years or 6,864 weeks to earn the equivalent of £2,438,275, the average English Premier League annual wage revealed in new research by FootballSalaryGuide. com, an interactive website which collates earnings information from hundreds of top flight players, created by FreeBets.org.uk.
Healthcare professionals such as doctors and nurses would have to work an average of 48 years, while education providers such as teachers and lecturers would need to work an average of 87 years. There are two things that really hacks me off - female football players would have to work 70 years to earn the same as their male counterparts and I would have stay working for The Landscaper until I’m around 160 years old to get the equivalent of one years salary of a guy my age who can kick around a ball. I’m not sure I will be able to slip into my little Karen Millen number in 2149. Thank you for all the e mails. I want you all to know that if you have any problems of a personal nature you can drop me line and I will try and advise – I have now been appointed as the magazine’s agony aunt. Just before I sign off I would advise Alex from Hampton Hill that your regular activity is unlikely to affect your eyesight. tabitha@landscapermagazine.com
