Award winners announced Sixty BALI members have now been informed they have won a BALI National Landscape Award, with some members successful in more than one category. This year’s Awards, in association with Horticulture Week and supported by headline sponsor Green-tech, sees 80 National Awards bestowed upon BALI members by the adjudication panel, which is chaired by landscape consultant and former senior lecturer in landscape studies at Writtle College, Greg Allen. Epicentre for turf professionals The BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition is recognised as Europe’s leading gathering of turf maintenance professionals, major equipment manufacturers and the top names in the industry. From humble beginnings as an educational conference for the members of the golf greenkeeping association, BTME has grown in popularity each year, firmly earning a reputation as the premier turf management event in Europe. For a few days in January the historic spa town of Harrogate becomes a centre for turf maintenance professionals. Taking place in the spectacular surroundings of the Harrogate Convention Centre, there will be exclusive product launches, innovative machinery unveilings and an unmissable opportunity to network with major names in the turf industry. BTME continues to grow and 2017 saw 4,460 individual visitors in attendance, with many returning for more than one day, such is the scale of the exhibition and conference. This number represented a 10% increase on the previous year, more than justifying the investment made by the 145 individual exhibiting companies who supported BTME, and without whom the event would not be possible. And BIGGA hasn’t forgotten its roots either. There are more than 240 hours of educational workshops and seminars comprising the Continue to Learn programme. In 2017 this amounted to 6,096 combined hours of education, or more than two hours for every golf course in the United Kingdom.

Creating better green spaces An exciting new partnership between idverde and the RSPB will help improve the understanding and role Friends of Parks groups and residents can play in both discovering and looking after the wildlife and plants in their neighbourhood. The innovative approach will see a dedicated member of the RSPB team based in Bromley, working with idverde, the Council’s greenspace management contractor, to help deliver the Council’s Biodiversity strategy. The work underlines the commitment to maintain, enhance and restore Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINCS) and other green spaces for biodiversity. The initial 18-month partnership will play a key role in helping their community become a greener place that benefits both people and wildlife which will create a green legacy for future generations. As London’s largest and greenest London Borough, it contains the landscape which helped inspire Charles Darwin, with the Borough continuing to have a strong connection to its natural environment, with 93 Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINCs), six Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and five Local Nature Reserves (LNRs). The two organisations will be working closely to ensure the much-loved borough remains vibrant and welcoming to people as well as serving as an important and valuable natural habitat supporting a wide range of plants and animals. A key element of this work will be creating opportunities for everyone in the area to discover the wildlife and fantastic variety of species living in their neighbourhood.

International ideas competition
Registration is still open in the RIBA Competition for inspiring and innovative ideas for the future uses of gasholder bases – the sub-surface voids left behind once an old gasholder has been dismantled. National Grid Property, which manages the company’s surplus land, has a portfolio of former gasholders which will be dismantled over the coming years. These voids represent an opportunity for repurposing and the competition is seeking alternative uses rather than the default practice of backfilling the holder. The initial phase of the competition will require digital submissions only, with five concept designs shortlisted for further development at the second phase. The deadline for first stage submissions is Tuesday 10 October 2017. Each shortlisted designer will receive an honorarium of £3,000 +VAT. UK homeowners are using their properties as a backup savings account as the average amount of equity released in July hit a record £78,334, according to figures compiled by leading equity release provider Responsible Equity Release. The equity release market shows little sign of slowing down, as homeowners turn to their properties to prop up savings accounts, pay off mortgages and cover pension deficits. With the average UK salary just under £28,000, homeowners released equity from their homes totaling almost three times the average annual wage last month. Responsible Equity Release figures also show that homeowners are taking advantage of innovation in the equity release sector to set up an additional borrowing facility which they can draw from if and when they need the money. On average, homeowners arranged an additional £37,000 in funds as a drawdown facility, on top of the equity already released. Over the past three months, 41% more UK homeowners released equity from their homes than the previous three months. Last month saw a 158% increase in the total amount of equity released, compared to July 2016. And the amount released in July 2017 was 10% up on June 2017. With no signs that the Bank of England are going to hike interest rates any time soon, this low interest rate environment has killed the savings hopes of many”. Healthier root system healthier sward less disease Glasgow Fort Retail Park is one of Scotland’s largest and most popular ‘out of town’ shopping destinations with 100 outlets and parking for 2,500 vehicles. It has a catchment area covering in the region of 2 million people and circa 100 retail and leisure outlets covering over 800,000sq ft. Award-winning commercial landscaper Grace Landscapes won the landscaping upgrade contract which included landscaping vast borders across the site and planting of 12m tall semi-mature Birch trees and native Pines, to echo the surrounding Scottish woodlands. Green-tech supplied everything required for the successful planting and development of the trees, shrubs and overall planting scheme which included sixty tree anchoring systems and irrigation systems. More than 1000 tonnes of Green-tree top soil, Green-tree Intensive Roof Garden Substrate and Green-tree Amenity tree soil was also supplied for the planting of the trees and throughout the entire landscaping scheme. Shrubs in the borders surrounding the shopping complex were top dressed with the 210m3 of bark mulch that Green-tech also supplied. Terrain Aeration have added a new Super Scamper Terralift machine to their fleet for deep penetration aeration. Originally a German invention used to aerate around tree roots with a blast of compressed air, the Terralift concept has been in service with Terrain Aeration for over twentyfive years. During this time, Terrain Aeration have treated all kinds of turf surface for waterlogging, compaction and panning, from sports fields, golf courses and bowling greens to treating trees in London parks, green spaces and the gardens of new house builds. The new Terralift machine, built by Terrain Aeration, takes the concept to a new level of treatment for waterlogging. The machine hammers a hollow probe one metre into the soil (with the help of a JCB road breaker gun). Once reaching this depth, a blast of compressed air is released to fracture and fissure the soil. On the tail end of the air blast, dried milled seaweed is incorporated and this, over a period of time, expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil, similar to ‘breathing’ underground, which helps to keep the fractures open longer. The probe is removed and the process repeated using two-metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern. This grid ensures that each probe shot links with the previous ones. The probe hole is then backfilled with an aggregate to provide a long term aeration/ventilation shaft, allowing air and water to percolate into the fissures. The top 1” - 2” should have a cap of normal top dressing to encourage the grass to grow over the holes. The result is an improved healthier root system, a

Learning LIVE signals opportunity The SALTEX 2017 free education programme is set to inspire visitors at the NEC on 1 and 2 November. With the full Learning LIVE programme set to be revealed in the coming weeks, the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) has released a few teaser seminars. Within the theatres a number of influential speakers will be on hand to provide updates and key advice. Mark Pover, facilities investment strategy manager at The Football Association (FA), will be participating in a panel debate entitled ‘Funding the future of natural turf.’ With so much money being invested into artificial turf, SALTEX visitors will have an opportunity to ask the funders if there is a danger of natural turf being left behind. Commenting on the panel debate, Mark said: “We haven’t forgotten the fact that the majority of football matches in this country are played on natural grass. We have just shy of 800 artificial pitches on our 3G register suitable for affiliated matches and we are continuing to invest in these but there are approximately 23,000 natural grass pitches. Clearly these are very important, as is the quality, so we will continue to improve and use natural turf pitches to keep people playing and also attract new players. “We are currently spending two million pounds a year on natural turf pitch improvements and I believe that SALTEX is the ideal place to update the industry so that visitors understand exactly what we are doing and the targets we have set. It is also a good opportunity to address some of the negative rumours that are circulated annually and reinforce our commitment to natural turf.” For those visitors that are looking to progress their career, the ‘Career development’ seminar presented by Steve Chappell, head greenkeeper at the PGA Centenary Golf Course at The Gleneagles Hotel, should not be missed. Steve will be primarily focusing on how volunteering can significantly help improve job prospects. “The thought process behind the session is to provide a little bit more of an understanding of how volunteering can help improve and embellish your CV,” says Steve. “It can help you stand out from the crowd and be more employable to a prospective employer. “The seminar would be beneficial for younger people in the industry, and also maybe for those who feel they have become stuck in a rut. The message behind it all, is to use the opportunities that are out there to develop yourself because it can help you take that next step which will give you that career fulfilment you are looking for.” Additionally, the seminar ‘Making your move’ will be beneficial in helping a visitor along their career path. Effective in reducing compaction Following extensive trials conducted by the STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute), it has been concluded that the SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid tractor mounted aerator would be an essential tool within any integrated turf management programme. Over a four month period, extensive STRI trials led by Dr Christian Spring were carried out at the world’s leading sports turf consultancy’s headquarters in Bingley, West Yorkshire. The research saw three trial plots set-up in which one area examined the effects of the SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid with air injection, one with the Aer-Aid without air injection, while the other plot was left un-treated. In particular, Christian and his team of researchers were looking at how and if the Javelin Aer-Aid had an effect on the hardness of the turf, root depth, water infiltration and disease. “The SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid was really effective in reducing compaction,” reported Christian. “In measuring the penetration depth, we ran the Aer-Aid over the surface and found that the probe was able to penetrate further into the soil profile, indicating that compaction throughout the entire trial site was significantly less than areas that were left un-treated.” “It became obvious that the Aer-Aid improved maximum root and depth within the soil profile and also had the benefit of increasing the depth of the average rooting mass. The reason or the rationale for this improvement was likely to be a result of the increased air space in the soil profile created by the air injection and the fracturing that resulted from that.” With 10mm diameter ‘tipped’ tines working at 75mm (3ins) spacing, air is introduced from the Aer-Aid at a rate of 88 litres (3cu.ft.) per minute at 120 PSI. These air injection tines are specially designed to use the maximum air available from the compressor and produces clean, fresh air, while also ensuring that surface disturbance is kept to a minimum. The cam trigger mechanism ensures that the air is always expelled at the bottom of the tine penetration, enabling treatment to be targeted precisely and consistently at desired depth It is common knowledge that well-aerated turf with good drainage and air circulation will experience fewer moisture problems, and during the trials, Christian reported that the plot which had been treated with the Javelin Aer-Aid had been extremely successful in keeping an all too common disease at bay. “The use of the SISIS Javelin Air-Aid proved beneficial in helping to reduce the conditions in which Microdochium Patch occurred on the trial plots. Plots that were treated
with the Aer-Aid, with the air injection switched on, appear to have significantly less disease than the un-treated plots during a period of disease pressure throughout autumn.” www.sisis.com

More transparency needed Public spaces owned by private companies are quietly spreading thorough London. Under current laws, landowners decide who has public access, an unusual planning rule which should be revised. Assembly Members agreed a motion today urging Mayor Sadiq Khan to show more transparency in the next London Plan, when allocating public spaces to the private sector. Sian Berry AM, who proposed the motion said: “The secretive way private owners of public places, like our parks and squares, set rules for the public must be made transparent. Even City Hall – the seat of the democratically-elected Mayor and London Assembly – is surrounded by 13-acres of the privately-owned More London development, which
means that this outdoor ‘public space’ is controlled by corporate rules and not the law of the land. Being able to know what rules you are being governed by, and how to challenge them, is a fundamental part of democracy.” Nicky Gavron AM, who proposed the amended motion said: “There is far too little transparency around London’s pseudo-public space. It is ludicrous that so many Londoners will be using these spaces with no knowledge of the laws governing them and it’s something we should all be worrying about. It is vital this is dealt with in the London Plan and that city-wide transparent, accountable and uniform guidance for setting the rules for how these spaces are governed should be issued.”

Open day hailed a success
Green-tech opened the doors to its offices, production facilities, warehousing and distribution operation this month. More than 150 customers and suppliers attended the open day at Green-tech‘s purpose built business park in North Yorkshire. Guests were invited on a tour of the Green-tech operation where they could see the UK’s leading landscape supplier in action. A number of seminars that covered John Chambers Wildflower Seeds, the ArborRaft system and Greentree topsoil’s took place hourly. Visitors were invited to demonstrate their skill at Beat the Green-tech Goalie and encouraged to enjoy the Yorkshire hospitality that Greentech is famed for. 70 people joined the Green-tech team for dinner at a Harrogate Hotel, where the generous revellers raised £476 for Physcap; Green-tech’s chosen charity which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children suffering from severe physical and mental disabilities within the Yorkshire area. Head of Sales Richard Gill said “The open day was a great opportunity for us to bring our customers and suppliers together and to meet the entire Green-tech team. Guests could tour the premises and preview our latest product developments. Many of our suppliers and customers have been trading with us for a long time and the day provided the perfect platform for us to thank them for their loyalty, commitment and support.” The day was well received and great fun was had by all.

More games at Pride Park Nathan Scarff, Head Groundsman at Derby County FC, has revealed that a range of ICL products have helped him achieve his main target of hosting more games at Pride Park Stadium without compromising on the quality of the pitch. Nathan is entering his third season with The Rams after a hugely successful start to his current role. He was crowned the Sky Bet Championship Groundsman of the Season for the 2015/16 campaign and was one of two Head Groundsmen who were highly commended last season. However, with the pitch at the Pride Park Stadium in arguably the best condition it has ever been, Nathan and his team won’t be resting on their laurels. “We are targeting getting more games in the stadium,” he says. “In my first year here we got an extra four games on and the following season we got an extra four games on top of that. This year we are hoping to get around six extra games without compromising on the quality of the playing surface. “The new pitch construction, which was installed last season, combined with quality products, has enabled us to do just this, and I’m feeling confident for the upcoming season.” www.icl-sf.co.uk
Students and apprentices impress Having battled through the WorldSkills UK National Qualifiers, eight skilled young apprentices and students have made it through to the final showdown in front of 70,000 spectators at The Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham (Nov 16-18). This years’ APL WorldSkills UK semi-final saw a bit of a change from the past two years with the event moving away from RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, and having more of a focus on the training and development of the competitors. Over the three days (21-24 August) the nine semifinalists had tasks to complete including paving, decking, walling and plant ident, procurement and working to a client’s brief.

Raising the standard First time Toro customer, Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire, has purchased a Groundsmaster 4300D rotary mower to tend the formal gardens. An improvement in the condition and appearance of the turf within the gardens of the 3000-acre estate is already evident. From Easter to September, the 65 acre gardens are open to the public and with footfall increasing so too are the horticultural standards. Jim Handley, head gardener, explains: “One of my main challenges after accepting the position at Grimsthorpe was to raise the horticultural standards of the gardens. Our expansive lawns are a major attraction for our visitors, especially those with young families, and it’s my responsibility to provide them with the best turf possible to enjoy their visit. “Soon after arriving at Grimsthorpe I realised that with our heavy clay soil, time constraints and natural mix of
turf species, our cylinder mower was struggling to keep the turf in good condition. With little to no seasonal lawn maintenance being carried out previously, I have been formulating plans to begin rejuvenating our turf over a number of years. The first step was to replace our cylinder with a rotary mower to help alleviate some of the problems we were having.” With it established that a rotary mower was needed to help with the regeneration and improvement of the turf, why a Toro? Jim says: “This is our first Toro mower, chosen simply because out of all the machines we looked at, the Groundsmaster 4300-D was the most suited. Its performance and comfort was unsurpassed and the ease of height adjustment and back up service presented was very good and sealed the deal.” A rotary mower is favoured for its ability to tackle longer, thicker grass and terrain with contours and undulations with ease. Dealing with tough weeds During the course of the year tough weeds take advantage. Going un-noticed in the border they thrive, growing stronger and spreading through your precious plants in an attempt to overthrow them. We all have our main enemies among their ranks: nettles, brambles, ivy, ground elder, bindweed, to name but a few of the worst offenders. Late summer and autumn may seem rather later in the season to take action, but actually the time is just right. Tough weeds like these are actively growing, some, especially bindweed is flowering and there is plenty of foliage to absorb a weedkiller: the secret is using the correct one that will do the job. THE RIGHT APPROACH Systemic weedkillers, like Vitax SBK Tough Weedkiller (contains Triclopyr) works by moving from the leaves, down through the plant to kill the roots. Quite simply the more foliage there is to absorb the chemical, the more there is

to get into the plant and so more of the roots will be killer. A common mistake is to pull up, or strim the weeds before applying the weedkiller. This means it is less effective, if it works at all. SBK tough weedkiller is specially formulated not to harm grass, so you can use it close to the lawn. However it will kill any of your precious garden plants that it comes into direct contact with, therefore care is needed when applying it. It is very effective when used on tree seedlings and saplings, such as ash and sycamore which are a problem in many gardens. It can also be used as a tree stump killer at any time of the year, even during the winter months. The active ingredient in SBK, Triclopyr, offers an excellent alternative to glyphosate which has been so widely used in recent years. SBK does not have a long-term adverse effect on soil, you can replant safely after only six weeks. APPLICATION The secret of success with any garden chemical is to follow the manufacturer’s application instructions. Vitax SBK is diluted in water and applied using a watering can or a sprayer. In either case a dedicated piece of equipment, used only for weedkillers is recommended. Choose a still day when the foliage is reasonably dry. Apply carefully only to the foliage of weeds or plants you wish to kill. Use a coarse spray if applying with a sprayer: it Ground Elder

does not drift and shield or tie back any plants that need protection. Apply only to lightly wet the leaf surfaces to the point of run-off; applying larger quantities and drenching the weeds will not be more successful. If you do not like the idea of mixing, SBK is available in a ready-to-use spray. Tip: Horsetail (equisetum) is difficult to wet because the surface of stems and leaves is so waxy. Either walk through it or lightly bruise with a plastic rake before applying to help the chemical stick. BE PATIENT Systemic weedkillers do not work overnight, depending on light levels and temperature they may not show much signs of action for a week or two. If weed growth is particularly heavy there may be re-growth next season. If this happens, do not be despondent, just wait until the weeds are in growth and re-apply. If you have a border infested with perennial weed, such as bindweed or ground elder, be prepared to be ruthless. You may need to sacrifice both weeds and plants to eradicate weeds completely and you may need to leave the border empty for a season while you treat any stubborn remaining weeds. The same thing applies when planting a new bed if perennial weeds are present: get rid of them before you plant, even if it means waiting and leaving the bed empty while you spray and eradicate the problem. WHAT ABOUT MOSS AND ANNUAL WEEDS? The key to success in controlling annual weeds like chickweed, meadow grass, groundsel and bittercress is to kill the seedlings before they grow, flower and set more seeds. You need to be fast because some of these complete their life cycle in a remarkably short time. Vitax Garden Weedkiller (contains acetic acid) in a ready-to-use spray is the ideal stand-by. Just spray onto the weed and it kills on contact. It will not go down through the plant and kill the roots, so is not effective in the permanent control of perennial weeds. However it will kill annual weeds in an hour.
TIPS ON AVOIDING THE INTRODUCTION OF WEEDS It is surprisingly easy to make matters worse by spreading weeds in your garden and introducing them from outside. Beware of manure from a farmyard, or your own garden compost. Never put perennial weeds or annual weeds that are seeding on your compost heap. Also the outside of a manure or compost heap is often covered in weed seeds just waiting to sprout. If planting newly acquired plants in your garden, check to see if the compost surface is weed free. If there are emerging seedlings, or traces of perennial weed eradicate these before you plant it. www.vitax.co.uk Nettles

Karl Hansell reports KARL HANSELL GOLF EDITOR For a number of years, I lived in Newcastle, the home of the 2017 British Masters, supported by Sky Sports, and so I can confirm that there are times when the cold wind blows off the North Sea and the rainclouds gather, it’s certainly not a place where you want to find yourself outside, playing golf. And so the success of the British Masters, which during October sees the European Tour return to North East England for the first time in 15 years, will depend largely upon whether the elements choose to play along. That part of the world is quite breathtaking and on behalf of BIGGA member Brian Clark and his team at Close House, I hope the conditions are such that their incredible hard work can be shown to its fullest. But in this modern world of Gore-Tex and year-round golf, rain doesn’t necessarily stop play. Greenkeepers find themselves competing against golfers, who expect the best possible conditions no matter the season. Good for green fee income, but bringing a range of difficulties for the greenkeeper, with many golfers having relatively little understanding of how the success of a course depends upon work completed many

months in advance, in the depths of winter. In the past the fairways would have been deserted throughout the winter months, allowing large scale renovation projects to take place. But this is no longer the case and the wear and tear of general play continues on turfgrass that is subjected to increasing stresses as the weather worsens. Combined with a warmer climate, these wet months lead to more aggressive disease activity and faster ingression. A wet, humid summer has only exacerbated this problem. Through the hard work of BIGGA, its industry partners, and its members, technology is evolving at a rapid rate and greenkeepers continue to be innovative with regards to overcoming problems. Fiat Professional launched its first ever one-tonne pickup, the Fiat Fullback, in the summer of 2016. The Fiat Fullback is largely based on the Mitsubishi L200 and features the same engine, chassis and driveline but a slightly reworked front-end. Liam Campbell reports
The Fiat Fullback is available in two trim levels (SX and LX), two power ratings (158hp and 178hp) and one body style (double cab). It is very comfortable and spacious with the longest cab in its class, but the practicality is slightly compromised with a small payload and towing capacity. SPECIFICATION The low lying cab of the Fiat Fullback means entering and exiting the cab is very easy, while having the longest cab in its class ensures there is ample legroom for occupants in the front and rear. Despite the low seating position, there is great visibility although there are very few storage compartments around the cab. There are just two trim levels on the Fiat Fullback, the SX and LX. The basic SX trim is quite well-spaced and includes remote-control central locking, electric windows and mirrors, air-conditioning and a DAB radio with Bluetooth

connectivity and steering-wheel mounted controls. Moving up to the LX grade, customers also receive keyless entry and ignition, leather seats (the front ones electrically adjustable and heated), dual-zone climate control, privacy glass and a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation and a reversing camera. ENGINE & DRIVELINE Powering along the Fiat Fullback is Mitsubishi’s all-new 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine. There is an entry-level 148hp output and a more powerful 178hp output, along with the option of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. On the combined cycle, the Fiat Fullback achieves a respectable 42.8mpg. The broad torque curves of both engines, and light chassis, means that the Fiat Fullback is surprisingly quick although we found the five-speed automatic transmission to

be slightly hesitant and slow. The engine is quiet, although quite a load of road noise is generated at high speeds and there is a lot of bodyroll going into the bends. TOWING AND LOAD AREA Productivity is a drawback of the Fiat Fullback, with a poor towing capacity, small load area and only an average payload of 1,050kg. The maximum towing capacity of 3.1 tonnes seems puny, when the likes of the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and now the Toyota Hilux and Nissan NP300 Navara now all offering 3.5 tonnes. Even the size of the load bed is compact. Measuring 1,470mm square, it’s around 60mm to 100mm shorter both length and width ways than most of vehicles in the sector. Even the maximum side wall height of 475mm is low compared with the deep load beds of the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Nissan NP300 Navara.
OFF-ROAD Off road, the Fiat Fullback is one of the best performers. The respectable 4WD-system from Mitsubishi has four settings; 2WD High, 4WD High, 4WD Low and 4WD Low with centre diff-lock and the ability to select 4Hi from 2Hi at speeds of up to 62mph. The maximum approach and departure angles at 30 and 22-degrees respectively, with a ground clearance of 205mm. A slight criticism is that there is no hill descent control, and the first gear is quite fast so a lot of braking is required while travelling downhill. PRICE AND AVAILABILITY The Fiat Fullback is priced from £20,995 plus VAT which, for a moderately spec double-cab pickup, represents fairly good value. List prices increase to £22,995 for the LX models and £24,395 plus VAT for the LX automatic.

Confor fights for 'missing millions' Confor has promised to maintain the pressure on the UK government to increase planting rates in England after latest figures showed the 2015-2020 target could be missed by FIVE MILLION trees. Latest quarterly statistics showed that less than 2.3 million trees had been planted between the May 2015 election and the end of June 2017 - only just over half the 4.4 million needed during that period to hit the 11 million target. If the current planting rate continues, fewer than six million trees will have been planted by May 2020, a deficit of more than five million trees. Stuart Goodall, Confor’s Chief Executive, said: “The latest planting figures demonstrate that we need a step-change in activity, a completely new attitude towards tree planting by officials. “Since the June election, we have had a number of positive meetings with forestry minister Thérèse Coffey and she has demonstrated a real desire to turn things around. That government level support needs to be actioned on the ground if we are to find those missing five million trees…. and more. “We have consistently raised this issue with ministers and offered solutions, including the Woodland Creation Planning Grant that has unlocked interest in large productive planting schemes for the first time in decades. At our request, Forestry Commission recently organised a meeting of agents and officials across the Defra family to identify remaining barriers and find ways forward.” Confor will continue maintaining the profile of this vital issue at a series of major events in the autumn, engaging directly with the Defra ministerial team: Mr Goodall said the five-point plan outlined in Confor’s election manifesto Planting The Future, published ahead of June’s election, was a clear and positive blueprint for change. Its recommendations included ending the chaotic three-agency system for considering planting applications, reducing the bureaucracy around the application process and treating forestry equally in land use decisions. “Achieving targets also requires officials to see tree planting as a positive activity, and find reasons to support
it, not look for the negatives, which is often the case at the moment”, added Mr Goodall. “We are really ramping up our campaigning at this crucial time for the future of our countryside. That means linking our continuing campaign for new planting with our call for an integrated approach to countryside policy after Brexit - we will have a new discussion paper out very soon and our work in the devolved administrations. “In Scotland, we have a policy conference in September which links the Scottish Government’s ambition to increase tree planting rates and creating new low-carbon homes. “Confor remains committed to leading the debate on the future of forestry and how we can secure a sustainable future for an increasingly valuable rural industry. Pressing for increased planting, alongside protecting our productive resource, is absolutely central to that approach.”

Bio-secure trees Although 60,000 of its young potted trees were large enough for sale two months ago, Barcham Trees has deliberately not released them until 1st September 2017, when their quarantined growing season ends and the Cambridgeshire nursery is sure they are pathogen- and pest-free, and safe to be planted into the UK landscape. “Customers have asked for them earlier”, explains managing director Mike Glover, “and although they were well rooted by July ours is the only British tree nursery which insists on this long period of quarantine, during which time the health and vitality of our newly potted stock is regularly checked by Bartlett Tree Experts, DEFRA and our own staff. “This policy demonstrates the practical realities of implementing a true bio-security policy, and its success means it cannot always be ‘business as usual’, and that methods and practices have to be rethought, often with cost implications to our business”, Glover concludes. His Barcham co-director and chairman of the Arboricultural Association Keith Sacre believes that with ‘Protect and Survive’ as its theme, the 51st Arboricultural Association National Amenity Conference will be the first international conference on arboricultural bio-security. “We shall be examining the implications and effectiveness of bio-security policy, as well as considering plant health overall”, says Sacre.

Townscape Products has completed its proudest, boldest and most detailed graphic concrete installation to date with the unveiling of the British Army Flying Memorial at the Museum of Army Flying in Stockbridge, Hampshire. In a service of dedication led by Field Marshall Michael Walker, Baron Walker of Aldringham, GCB, CMG, CBE, DL – the cenotaph comprises 39 printed graphic concrete panels displaying the names of 5,127 British service men and women that have died serving the country since World War One. The pioneering project is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK and it is believed that printed concrete has never previously being used to display so much text. Jonathan Goss, managing director, Townscape Products, said: “Conscious that there was no dedicated memorial for
these 5,127 British heroes – the organisation committee wanted to create a peaceful and impactful memorial within the grounds of the museum where people could contemplate and pay their respects. “With names being etched into the concrete via the printing process, graphic concrete represented a way of honouring every single one of these heroes, without the lengthy lead time associated with professional engraving. “Technically, given the intricacy of so many words and letters, we knew this represented the biggest ever test to our casting process. Going in at the Deep End
Aggregate Industries has helped reopen one of Europe’s few remaining saltwater lidos, in a £3 million restoration scheme for the Jubilee Pool in Penzance. The project was part of an effort by the community and local government to restore the cherished bathing spot, which originally opened in 1935 the year of King George Vs Silver Jubilee. The repair and restoration was in response to the serious structural damage suffered in the storms of 2014, which battered the Cornish coastline. The location of the project demanded specialised design requirements, as being a saltwater tidal pool meant there was a high risk of corrosion to the concrete reinforcement. The restoration required a blue coloured swimming pool base to be constructed with a blue pigmented concrete, which had to also comply with an XS2 exposure class – this defines the concrete design requirements to ensure durability for the intended design life. However, due to the soaring cost of the required blue pigment, Aggregate Industries worked closely with the main contractor, CORMAC Contracting, to propose a more

cost-effective solution using a coloured surface hardener in conjunction with a lightened base concrete. Andrew Wilson, Territory Sales Manager at Aggregate Industries, explained: “We collaborated with the colour surface hardener supplier to provide a bespoke concrete that not only met the XS2 exposure class but the unique requirements of the project. “The product of choice was a bespoke mix of Artevia Light concrete which not only complied with the exposure class and achieved the high durability requirements but also provided a lightened concrete for the installation of the colour surface hardener. This high performance formula, coupled with a light concrete design to ensure consistency of colour, means the pool not only looks visually appealing but will stand the test of time. In all, we supplied a total of 492m³, which was produced by the Redruth plant. “Jubilee Pool is an important fixture in the local community and has long been a focal point where people can gather and socialise, and families can enjoy a fun day out. We were delighted to play our part in refurbishing the pool to give it a new lease on life. Combined with its aesthetic appeal, Artevia Light was the ideal solution in terms of design, durability and cost.” The Jubilee Pool repair and restoration project totalled £2.94m. The Coastal Communities Fund granted Cornwall Council £1.95m and match funding was provided by Cornwall Council, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership’s Regional Growth Fund, Tempus Leisure, Penzance Town Council and The Friends of Jubilee Pool. www.aggregate.com

Stone that looks like wood Black-grey in colour and shot through with golden-brown hues, Slatewood is grained and craggy; making it an excellent alternative to using old or weathered timber in your garden scheme. Sports flooring specialists CONICA has risen to new heights, supplying an impressive running track on top of London’s award-winning Whitecollar Factory. The futuristic design extends across every inch of the building, culminating in a running track encircling the top of the building and a roof-top leisure area offering panoramic views of the city. With its height and exposure, making sure the unique sport and recreation areas don’t degrade with wind and sun damage was a core concern. To combat this, SEL Environmental Ltd’s SELSports division, the contractor managing the roof and track area, worked closely with CONICA to lay 290m2 of its red CONIPUR EPDM over a resin bound gravel base. To ensure effective drainage, the CONICA
hardscaper surfacing was overlaid on SELSport’s sub-base replacement units which are an innovative rooftop solution allowing water to be trapped and stored without the need for pumps or irrigation – ideal in a dense urban area with limited greenspace. “Exposure to the elements in a project like this is unavoidable,” said Michael Davis, CONICA’s representative on the ambitious project. “So, making sure the surfacing was able to withstand strong winds and the heat and UV exposure from the sun was crucial. With its strong adhesion and flexibility, CONICA’s single-layer EPDM was an ideal solution to this. “We also included an aliphatic binder to protect against UV rays to withstand colour degradation over time – meaning the track will still be vibrant and in optimum condition for years to come, with minimal maintenance.” www.conica.com
Firm foundations ‘Rock-solid’ foundations are vital for any structure – and the sustainable ground screw based system from Stop Digging is increasingly proving the solution of choice. New breed of drinking fountain Summer 2017 has seen a tipping point in the battle to reduce the growing environmental problems caused by single use plastic bottles. In August, Borough Market became the latest big name destination to introduce a new breed of public drinking fountain, announcing plans to stop the sale of single use plastic bottles. The move sees them join others including London Zoo, Wimbledon Tennis Club and Heathrow Airport, who have all installed a new game-changing type of water fountain. 38.5 million1 plastic bottles are bought in the UK every day, but only just over half are recycled, while 16m are put into landfill, burnt or leak into the environment and oceans each day. Plastic bottles can take up to 450 years2 to break down once they reach the sea. Many of the popular bottled water brands consumed in the UK are transported hundreds of miles from their source, contributing to the 350,000 tonnes3 of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere every year by the bottled water industry in the UK.

Vertically Challenged After the success of the last seminar on paving, the APL are holding a one-day technical seminar, sponsored by London Stone, looking at the challenges of vertical landscaping. Industry experts and practitioners will be on hand to provide information and technical knowledge about all aspects and types of vertical construction and finishes. The event takes place on 26 September at Horticulture House, Chilton, Oxfordshire. This day will be packed and fast paced and will include topics and speakers such as:Kate Gould, Kate Gould Gardens, will be joining us to look at the design process. This will include the considerations that should be explored when including free standing or retaining walls in your projects. This will cover purpose, site assessment, materials, aesthetics and costs. All of these areas should be explored before the design. Then a look at what information contractors should expect from construction drawings supplied. Oliver Magnusson will discuss the role of a structural engineer. Many contractors have issues of when or if a structural engineer should be approached. In this session we look to give good practical advice on if required when should they be approached and by whom? This will also cover what the costs may be, and who should pay for it. There are many types of walls with many uses and in this session we look to explore these. Paul Hensey, Green Zone Design Ltd, will discuss backing walls, and we will also look at facing walls, concrete block, brick and stone. We will take a really good look at the choices available and the technical aspects of each. Craig Potter, London Stone, will be talking on Design Clad, a very popular porcelain cladding system used as an alternative to rendering. He will discuss the pros and cons of the system, but also installation methods. Previous APL Chairman and Managing Director of Landform Consultants, Mark Gregory, will be talking about waterproofing and weep holes on retaining walls. He will also share case studies around the design elements and applications, and also a case study around the previous talk from Paul Hensey. The day will also take a look at Gabion Systems, specialist mortars, wall drainage, compact earth walls, dry walling, rendering systems and finish with an industry debate on all that was picked up in the day. Bees are best Bees are the best pollinators in the animal kingdom, new research has confirmed. With flowers being visited by many different types of animal, it can be a challenge to work out which of these visitors are good pollinators for particular plant species. Researchers from Edinburgh Napier University, the University of St Andrews and the University of Bristol, with funding from the Natural Environment Research Council, looked at the ability of flower-visiting insects to move pollen onto flowers in a diverse community of plants on Mount Carmel in Israel. By measuring the amount of pollen different species of insects deposited onto flowers and combining this with how often they visited flowers, they produced a score for the performance of each type of insect as a pollinator for a wide variety of plant species. Dr Gavin Ballantyne, of Edinburgh Napier University, said: “Honeybees, sweat bees and different types of solitary bees were the most effective visitors.
“Bee species come in a huge range of different shapes and sizes and you’ll often see a morphological match between their size and tongue length and the shape of the flowers that they visit and successfully deposit pollen onto. We also found that the hovering bee flies, known as bombyliids, were the most effective non-bee flower visitors.” The findings help ecologists to understand which plants benefit from which insects and identify which species might be especially vulnerable to change in complex environments like Mount Carmel, where there are dozens of plant species flowering at any one time, being visited by hundreds of species of bees and other insects.

The annual survey is part of an ongoing programme of research to explore the relationship between garden plants and the wildlife that lives on and around them. The survey was undertaken by a talented team of wildlife experts supported by interested volunteers to help with identification. With finds ranging from the Great Spotted Woodpecker to the Lesser Water Boatman, the team surveyed ponds, trees, log piles and Knoll’s many native and exotic plants to achieve the grand total of 146 species, up slightly from the 2016 survey results despite very poor weather on the day. The survey’s positive results are a real endorsement of Knoll’s naturalistic gardening style, which is designed to be beneficial to wildlife as well as creating beautiful

It is arranged on three levels and features beautiful Betula pendula Szechuanica multi-stem, cocooned in a ceiling to floor undulating clear window. The tree lets in so much light to the building that it lifts your spirits as you enter. “The majority is made from recycled materials and water from the roof is drained via a single rainwater pipe hovering above a water bowl, and the next level has an edible garden featuring fruit trees and culinary herbs. Underneath the building is a swath of shade tolerate plants and a disabled access walkway so patients can enjoy their environment.” dRMM garden designer, Rupert Muldoon, said: “Maggie’s Centre in Oldham presented the opportunity to design an ornamental forest floor, which is lushly planted and flows below the sculptural birch and pine trees on a sloping, shaded site. “My design was based upon mixes of plants species that would knit together and thrive alongside one other, resulting in a very intricate planting schedule of perennials and shrubs. And working alongside Johnsons, I was assured of the best quality plants, which are all British-grown on site.” The establishment of Maggie’s Centre was inspired by the story of Maggie Keswick Jencks, who was told she had cancer in a hospital corridor, and vowed that no one else with cancer should be treated in that way. This led to the first Maggie’s Centre being opened in Edinburgh in 1996, and since then 21 Centres have opened in the UK and abroad. www.maggiescentres.org

The easy way is plug & play Learning about the different aspects of garden lighting can seem daunting for some at first, especially if you have been asked by a client to provide lights as part of a service. Martin Bennett reports only can it be installed by anybody, especially with the

Installing outdoor lights in this way really couldn’t be easier and with a much wider range of higher quality lights on the market currently, there are plenty of options ready for any purpose and location. In the past, Plug & Play systems were limited and mainly consisted of smaller size, lower quality decking lights with a built in LED light source. Now there is an extensive variety of Plug & Play fittings such as inground and step lights, spikelights, path lights, rock lights and more. These designs are now available in durable and stylish materials such as Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel, Natural Copper, Solid Brass and Anodised Aluminium. For extra choice on lighting effects, light colour and brightness, it is wise to use fittings where a replaceable LED bulb can be housed. 12v or ‘Low Voltage’ garden lighting is extremely adaptable. It is powered by a transformer that converts 240v mains voltage down to a much safer 12v. Not

simplified plug & play systems, but also is very resistant to outdoor weather conditions. Often, cold weather and heat produced by bulbs in light fittings, can cause condensation to occur in outdoor lights. With 240v mains fittings, this commonly results in the circuit tripping or shorting, however 12v fittings can withstand the effects of condensation and will continue to work perfectly. The concept behind the versatile outdoor ‘Plug & Play’ systems is a two-pin plug located at the end of cable lengths attached to the lights. This two-pin plug simply pushes into a Connector or Splitter, or indeed directly into the power source - a Transformer. Once plugged in, the cable connector is secured by a threaded cap. That is it! This means no need for fiddly wiring at all, and if an installer wishes to ‘hardwire’ in the traditional way via a junction box, the two-pin plug can be cut off and the wires stripped. Various sizes of transformer, cable lengths, and multi-splitters are available, enabling the circuit to be as long as required, and allowing numerous lights to be fitted in many areas of the garden. Dear Fans Friday the 15 September was National 4pm Finish Day. The brains behind the scheme was Red Bull, who devised it to promote productivity and working smart rather than working long hours. Our Dear Leader invented Poets Day (push off early tomorrow’s Saturday ) many many years ago. The rest of us of course have to stay to 5 30 pm - still as you know, I’m not one to complain. I was however treated to day out at Glee Show and promised a fine breakfast as long as I got to the NEC by 8 30 am. I climbed into my sporty BMW at 6am and sped towards a fine morning repast. Sausage bacon and eggs are an ideal start to the day as long as you have, like me, a superb figure. The only thing that I found depressing was that it was served in a metal trough - and the baked beans were in a metal cup. What marketing guru came up with that brilliant idea? The Dear Leader was not amused either and told the hovering manager that it was plates and cutlery that separated us from the animals. On the following day we could hear a great deal of laughter as the two leaders hid themselves in the meeting room for a couple of hours. It’s not that I’m nosy but it is my job to tidy and to my horror the cause of all the mirth was written on a reporters note pad under the heading Ten Round the Garden Double Entendres...
