Lamb’s birdie blitz The 30th anniversary celebrations of the BIGGA National Championship (sponsored by Charterhouse and Kubota) saw Chris Lamb claimed victory at Verulam Golf Club, with a 4-under par total across the 36-hole competition to claim the BIGGA Challenge Trophy. The +4 handicapper’s round included seven birdies; with four holes left to play, Chris sat one shot behind runner-up Tom Workman (Minchinhamption). The pair started the day tied for first place, and swapped the lead throughout the round in a tightly-contested duel. Two birdies in the final three holes propelled Chris to victory. The 23-year-old said: “It was probably one of the best duels I have been involved with. The fact that we both played pretty good helped. When I went one behind I said to myself ‘Come on, let’s do this’, and I was lucky enough to be able to pull it back. Going into the tournament I never thought I would win, and it was only once we hit our tee shots on the 18th, and he went into a bunker, that I realised that a par would probably be enough to see me over the line. It’s very special to have won the event, especially on its 30th anniversary, and I’m looking forward to defending my title next year.” BIGGA Chief Executive Jim Croxton thanked the team at Verulam for inviting the association back to the venue, and for being excellent hosts: “Having played a few holes with Chris Carpenter MG, the course manager, I can confirm that

he provided his fellow BIGGA members with a tough test of their golfing ability. The course is in spectacular condition and I can’t think of a better setting for the 30th anniversary of our national tournament. I would like to thank Chris and his team for their efforts and for allowing BIGGA to write our own chapter in the history of this prestigious venue. “Congratulations also to Christopher Lamb for showing us all how it’s done with some incredible golf. He fought off some tough competition to become BIGGA National Champion 2017.” Charterhouse’s Nick Darking said: “We are delighted to be part of the 30th anniversary celebrations at Verulam. Congratulations to Chris and the team for presenting the course so well, and here’s to the next 30 years of the tournament.” The BIGGA National Championship 2018 will be held at Gullane Golf Club, East Lothian on 8-9 October 2017. www.bigga.org.uk

NeoGrass expanding network NeoGrass, an artificial grass manufacturer, has seen an unprecedented rise in requests for its artificial grass from schools, homeowners, businesses and commercial developers, and is expanding its network of approved installers. Will Crozier, NeoGrass Director, said: “The increase in orders we’ve had for artificial grass is incredible; we’ve been inundated with requests over the last few years and have decided to recruit new installers to cope with the demand. “We’re creating a member network of installers that is completely free to join. After a local landscaping contractor is approved with us, their installer profile will be hosted on our website and they’ll have access to a range of member benefits including free sales referrals from local customers, trade pricing and exclusive discounts.” Members of the NeoGrass installer network will also have access to full product support and training, rewards schemes and direct delivery to sites across the UK. benefits is free after becoming an approved installer. Will said: “Artificial grass is very quick and easy to install, and many of the landscapers we work with are finding being an installer a very profitable business, something that’s only likely to continue as the demand for our product grows.” NeoGrass technological factors include Instant Recovery Technology® nylon fibres (ensuring NeoGrass grass is up to 40% more resilient than other materials used to create artificial grass), FeelGood Technology® (keeps its grass up to 12 degrees cooler on hot days), and Natural Look Technology® (ensuring the lawn looks natural and realistic from every angle). Many of NeoGrass’s customers choose artificial grass as an all-in-one solution to a lack of sunlight, dried out grass, pests and drainage problems. NeoGrass is only accepting a limited number of applications for each area. The company is advising those interested in the new positions to apply as soon as possible. www.neograss.co.uk

All about productivity

“I’d commented on it when I’d visited the RAC, and having it to try just confirmed that it was exactly what we needed. We can topdress all the greens in under four hours, getting out and round without being caught by play. I worked out how this equated to time and labour savings, and that really sealed the deal.” The Rink DS3800 has a spreading width of up to 15m, spreading thickness of up to 15mm and a hopper capacity of 3.8m3. It’s also available with an optional cross conveyor. “This unit is big and beautiful – here it’s all about productivity and getting the job done quickly and efficiently,” adds James. “The Rink has also freed up my guys who I can now put to other uses elsewhere. All of this made the purchase a no-brainer and it really has been a great addition to our fleet.”

Clean Up with IBEA Earlier this year, Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in Kent took delivery of a Rink DS3800 bulk topdresser from Charterhouse Turf Machinery. In 2018, the club will host the Halford Hewitt. “Though a team of nine sounds like quite a big team, the golfers’ expectations are really high, so with our maintenance regime, time is of the essence,” says Course Manager James Bledge. “When it comes to topdressing, we have a small topdresser which we use on the greens, but this involved two guys filling it by hand – a hugely tiring task. If we wanted to do all the greens and approaches, that’s 33 tonnes of sand shovelled by hand!” Lee Strutt, at the Royal Automobile Club, purchased a Rink DS3800 last year, and organised with Charterhouse to transport it to Royal Cinque Ports for James to demo.

The IBEA Petrol Vacuum Collectors (Stand KO20) works on hard surfaces and grassy areas. The self-propelled IBEA heavyduty outdoor vacuum can clean up leaves, litter, cans, plastic bottles and detritus. The Ibea Turbo will reduce material collected by 20% of its original volume by pulverizing it with a heavy-duty steel impeller; it is then stores in the 200L bag. The bag is made from heavy-duty, dust-proof material to keep operators dust free, especially in the summer. In wet weather, wet (stuck down) leaves can be collected with extra suction power, generated through opening the slats on the bag (providing more ventilation) to increased air flow. An extra option is the wander hose kit, for collecting in awkward areas. Vanmac fulfills five-year vision

Netherlands-based Vanmac has successfully realised the vision and direction envisaged in 2012, following a period of ‘product re-think and redesign’. The company manufactures the Trilo range of blowers and vacs. It opened in 1932, and since 2008 has been jointly owned by Leo van Loen (the founder’s grandson), and Peter van Mispelaar (almost ‘family’ in that he was an engineer at the company). Together, the co-owners have established Trilo as a global company, with sales in more than 40 countries; the UK was one of the first many years ago. In November 2015, Peter decided to bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe by employing its own direct sales team; he initially worked through an importer. With some 24 years of combined experience of the Trilo range, Jon Proffitt and Jeremy Vincent were the ideal choice for the sales team. They divided the UK’s north and south areas between them, and, with the aid of a comprehensive list of dealers, have overseen a revival of the brand with an impressive increase in sales. In 2012, Trilo began introducing modern manufacturing strategies to enable more competitively priced products (blowers, verticutters, vacuum units/vacuum sweepers and flail collectors). At the time, Peter was concerned about the need to reduce prices to remain competitive, and didn’t think that was possible with the existing product range and manufacturing processes. However, thanks to clever and attractive redesigns that have retained the product build quality ethos of rigidity and reliability, Trilo has managed to live up to its ideas. Product redesigns have centred around commonality of major components of the products to enable those needed cost reductions. In turn, this has led to more options that the end user can specify on a given machine – so much so that

10

www.landscapermagazine.com

an ingenious piece of software was designed by Leo (‘The Configurator’) to aid sales staff and dealers and, ultimately, the customer. Being able to custom design an order means ‘standard’ machines are becoming a thing of the past, with ‘bespoke’ becoming the order of the day. To manufacture mainly ‘bespoke’ items, the business model has been turned over to ‘just in time’ principles for the procurement of raw materials – helping reduce costs by almost eliminating a costly inventory of stock materials. ‘The Configurator’ has aided control considerably, as all potential or real orders are logged and graded (‘just quote’; ‘likely to order’; ‘firm order’), so surprises don’t occur. Every ‘Configurator’ listing is revisited and re-graded as necessary, and can be slotted into the available production schedule and tracked – available for the sales staff and dealer, and for the customer to be advised. Having achieved goals set in 2012, the company is gearing up for its next period of growth, which includes a €1M building and refurbishment of the production facility. No section of the factory has been overlooked, and a comprehensive re-layout of the production flow will result in automatic picking of minor parts coming in, as well as new painting booths and offices – all to be completed by first quarter 2018.

Green-tech supply roof garden materials to King’s Cross Green-tree’s intensive roof garden substrate and gtRoofdrain has recently been installed in the prestigious London development of Four Pancras Square. Four Pancras Square is a Grade A office building located to the North of the existing King’s Cross railway station, on the new Pancras Square. The 170,000 sq ft ten floor building is the final part of a two million sq ft cluster of nine office buildings south of Regent’s Canal. The landscaping work was undertaken by Kent-based landscape contractor Willerby Landscapes and Greentech supplied them its own brand Green-tree Roof Garden intensive substrate for the roof top containerised planting scheme. The substrate was ideal for the project due to its lightweight texture and good water-holding capacity which ensures healthy plant establishment in harsh

rooftop environments. gt Roofdrain was also incorporated into the project; this forms a lightweight high performance drainage layer, allowing collection and storage of water to irrigate plants during drier periods. Green-tech’s Head of Sales, Richard Gill commented: “We are always delighted to work with Willerby Landscapes and this was a great project to be involved with. Greentree Green Roof Substrates are the go-to products for roof garden projects due to the lightweight and workable properties of the product along with Green-tech’s ability to deliver to more challenging city locations. Green-tree Roof Garden Substrates have been used on a number of high profile projects across the country and have received great praise from architects and contractors.“

Green spaces a key impact on children’s health Glendale is highlighting the positive impact that spending time outdoors has on children’s health, following a report that revealed hundreds of playgrounds have closed across England in the past two years.

The national green services provider, which specialises in the management and maintenance of public and private green spaces, believes the closures will lead to a negative impact on children’s long-term health. One in every five children aged 10 to 11 is obese according to the NHS, with a lack of exercise one of the leading causes. According to the report by the Association of Play Industries (API), over 200 playgrounds across England were closed by local authorities between 2014 and 2016, with plans for a similar number to be shut in the future. The UK government has a duty under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), to protect and promote informal recreation and play opportunities for all children and young people. With the reduction in the number of play areas readily available and with awareness of the associated maintenance budgets, Glendale has developed a fresh approach to grounds maintenance services within schools, creating educational landscapes to encourage social integration and play. It offers extensive management programmes for the creation and maintenance of new play environments, including natural furniture and play materials, play and learning e-plans, tree supply and planting, and the creation of wildlife areas. Glendale’s South West based landscaping team helped transform a plot of unused land within the grounds of a

primary school in Bideford into a garden, designed using pupils’ drawings as inspiration. As well as outdoor education areas, the garden features a sensory area, bird boxes and a greenhouse. Work has also recently been completed at a primary school in Surrey, where Glendale’s specialists created a learning sandpit, which includes items made from recycled materials such as logs as natural furniture, and old tires as flower planters. John Nuttall, director of landscapes at Glendale’s sister organisation epd (Environment, Planning and Design) said: “The health benefits of spending time outdoors are well known; it promotes active, healthy lifestyles and encourages people to participate in physical and social interaction, whether that’s running, cycling, walking or even gardening. “The figures relating to childhood obesity are concerning and unless it’s tackled now the issue will only get worse. As constant developments in technology can make it very

NEWS tempting for children to stay indoors, it’s imperative there are plenty of outdoor spaces available for children to access. “It’s also important for children to have time and space away from away from televisions or computer games to let their minds wander free, which is proven to boost creativity and productivity. “Playgrounds are a key part of this, providing a place where children and communities can come together to spend time and enjoy being active and keeping fit. The health habits children develop at a young age can stay with them for life, and playgrounds also provide the perfect place to explore and learn about the environment, connecting them with nature, promoting life skills that will serve them well as they progress into adulthood. “Increasing budget cuts inevitably cause problems for local authorities, but it’s important that the work to create sustainable, beautiful green spaces for the benefit of both children and communities in general continues, resulting in a positive impact on health and wellbeing.” www.glendale-services.co.uk

FSC Certification for Green-tech After a rigorous compliance process Green-tech is now FSC certified. Green-tech sells in excess of 1.5 million stakes and 15,000m3 of wooden bark chippings each year; customers can be assured they are all FSC compliant and made from responsible sources. FSC works to take care of the world’s forests for future generations, and sets the standards for a responsibly managed forest, both environmentally and socially. Green-tech’s Purchasing Manager Tom Parker said: “Becoming FSC certified has been important to us. It demonstrates that Green-tech complies to the highest social and environmental standards available in the market. Concern about the state of the world’s forests and timber resources is increasing, and FSC provides our customers with a solution to the environmental and social issues faced. Using FSC certified wood will ensure forests thrive for generations to come.” The FSC certification adds to Green-tech’s long-standing history of committing to customer service, quality in delivery, and environmental responsibilities. Green-tech works within the ISO framework of ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 standards, and has successfully demonstrated commitment

to continuous improvement for both standards over the last seven years. With concern over depleting forests and sustainability, Governments and businesses are increasingly specifying FSC-certified products in procurement programs. The FSC certification enables companies to access more environmentally sensitive markets, and demonstrates responsible business practices. www.green-tech.co.uk

Students designs for proposed Peace Garden Landscape architecture students have created ideas to help shape the design of Manchester’s proposed replacement Peace Garden. For the Integrated Project 2017 – part of the Master of

Landscape Architecture course at the Manchester School of Architecture at Manchester Metropolitan University – they focused on the live issue of creating a new Peace Garden in Manchester city centre. Since the removal of the previous Peace Garden five years ago as part of the redevelopment of St Peter’s Square, The Friends of Manchester Peace Garden have been campaigning to get the garden re-instated. Lincoln Square has been identified by Manchester City Council as the likely location for the new garden, and PlanitIE was recently appointed by a consortium of developers to deliver the public realm of the area. Working in close collaboration with the Friends group, as well as Planit-IE, some 36 students worked in groups over an intensive week from September 22 - 29 to explore how the many and complex ideas behind the apparently simple word ‘peace’ might be translated into the form of a contemporary public space in a rapidly changing city. The groups presented their proposals to a panel of judges, including Qaisra Shahraz of Faith Network for Manchester, sculptor Karen Lyons (creator of the Erinma Bell bust in Manchester Town Hall), and Steve Roman and Rae Street of

NEWS The Friends of Manchester Peace Garden. The winning proposal by Group A was based on the idea of ‘peace’ as an inner state of mind characterised by equilibrium, contemplation and protection. This group designed an oval reflecting pool, semienclosed by a wall punctuated with ‘windows’, and enlivened by a continually flowing waterfall: a simple, powerful, and very professionally presented vision of a new icon for the city centre and a space for contemplation. The runners-up, (Group E), proposed the idea of peace as diversity and interaction, manifesting this through a more complex, diverse space composed of multiple overlapping circles, defined through differences in material, texture, vegetation, height and function. The judges praised this entry for its dynamic and diverse vision of ‘peace’, and for the varied sensory experience, allowing for gatherings, meetings, quiet reflection, celebration, and play. On behalf of all the judges, Steve Roman said: “We were very impressed by the quality of the student designs and by

An established fixture for the horticulture trade, the event provides a great opportunity to come together for networking, fun and fundraising. The party will kick off Perennial’s HortAid 2018 fundraising campaign and includes a raffle. Tickets cost £25, including a glass of bubbly on arrival; the venue will be the Flamingo Room in London’s West End. The revised format will be more informal than before, with opportunity for catching up with friends, as well as food and live music. Anita Bates, Perennial’s Director of Marketing and Development comments: “Those who have attended before know what a great night the Party for Perennial is. Not only is it a chance to get together during a slower time in the horticultural season, but it is also an important event for Perennial in terms of fundraising. Tickets are now available so put the date in your diary and join us.” The 2017 Party raised over £32,000, kick-starting the year’s fundraising. Money raised through ticket sales and the raffle help support UK horticulturists and their families who come to Perennial for help. horticulture industry, Perennial is a lifeline for people that have nowhere else to turn. FUNDRAISING MAKING A DIFFERENCE Perennial helps people like George, who had been forced to retire early from his gardening career due to ill health. He and his wife, who had a progressive degenerative disease, were living on welfare benefits and their debts were mounting. They approached Perennial for help with purchasing a mobility vehicle, as she was unable to leave the house. The Perennial Caseworker helped them apply for benefits they were entitled to, as well as awarding them an on-going weekly benefit payment directly from the charity. George’s wife passed away in January 2015, but Perennial was there to help him help sort out his finances. When he received a notice from the authorities demanding he repay some benefit that had been overpaid, he was terribly distressed as he was intending to spend his small amount of savings on a headstone for his wife’s grave. The Caseworker appealed against the decision and eventually won. George is now able to manage on his income and put a small amount of money aside each week. He is teaching horticulture on a voluntary basis at his local community centre, and has finally purchased the headstone for his wife’s grave. Learn to love ‘car park’ plants, says RHS The RHS is calling on gardeners to learn to love the nation’s ‘car park’ plants – robust, everyday shrubs often found dotted across urban landscapes as part of its national Greening Grey Britain campaign. Including snowberry, Brachyglottis and Oregon grape, these shrubs are a common sight in car parks, on roundabouts and brownfield sites across the UK, and although once popular in gardens have fallen firmly out of favour. Uncared for on our streets, they can become woody and misshapen, but provide important ground cover, shelter for wildlife, prevent soil erosion and help limit flooding. Nurtured in gardens, via a little pruning, feeding and mulching, they offer colour and structure in difficult corners. More commonly referred to as amenity shrubs, these landscape favourites are cheap, reliable and capable of surviving deep shade or dry, hot spots. Leigh Hunt, Principal Horticultural Advisor at the Royal Horticultural Society said: “Robust everyday shrubs are the humdrum wallpaper in the urban environment and it seems that in the case of some of the more well-known varieties, familiarity breeds contempt. Yet many of these plants have the RHS Award of Garden Merit and make an excellent choice for gardeners. The finest give year round colour and structure and can look beautiful in some of the toughest growing spots. We’d certainly call on gardeners to consider the splendour of these ‘car park’ varieties when looking to green far flung corners of our towns and cities.” As part of its Greening Grey Britain campaign the RHS is highlighting the crucial role that plants play in urban areas. Examples of plants that can be taken from ‘car park’ to garden include: Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ AGM: Grown for its fiery red show of stems in winter. When a hedge trimmer is put over them annually, they can turn brown but cut all the stems off at 6in in early April and the reward is a gleaming display from November to March. Brachyglottis ‘Sunshine’ AGM: A modest evergreen shrub with grey leaves and yellow daisy flowers. It is notably drought resistant and ideal for sunny dry spots. Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium): A low spreading evergreen shrub widely planted in the shade. Its edible fruits

are consumed by birds and self-sown seedlings are common, doing a good job in many an inhospitable border. Lonicera nitida ‘Baggesen’s Gold’ AGM: Often given a lumpy haircut with a hedge trimmer but can be easily and quickly shaped into small hedges and shapes such as balls and cones, creating eye-catching structure in the garden. One exception to the rule is the buddleja, which despite being great for butterflies, can self-seed and become a weed. The RHS suggests avoiding planting where its seedlings can blow into waste ground, railway lines and the countryside to become a nuisance.

Belgium blooms Derbyshire-based manufacturer Amberol’s eco-friendly product has helped towns and cities across Belgium bloom throughout the summer, while conserving water.

Brussels’ regions Anderlecht and Uccle. The planters have a built-in water reservoir with a series of capillaries to ‘suck up’ the water, which is dispersed via an expander pad. Because the water is stored under the soil, it doesn’t evaporate whatever the weather conditions. “The most popular products this year include the cupand-saucer hanging baskets, and the tiered planters, which our customers like because they are easy to plant and have a large water reservoir, making them really easy to maintain even when the weather is hot and dry as it has been this year,” adds Xavier. Bota-Concept (Sanac’s largest customer in Belgium) offers turnkey projects to cities aiming to increase the amount of green space in urban areas. The self-watering tiered fountains and floor-standing planters are popular among city council clients. Bertrand Pettiaux from Bota-Concept explains: “We plant up the tiered fountains and floor-standing planters in our nursery, and send them out fully grown. We have had up to 45 degrees in the nursery early this summer, and even in these extreme conditions we only watered them once a week.” www.amberol.co.uk

Established for 35 years, Flannery’s have an outstanding reputation for the highest quality field-grown trees.

The self-watering planters help create floral displays in public spaces, parks and shopping centres. The planters need watering only once a week – even during the hottest months – saving time and money on upkeep. The recyclable polyethylene containers also help save water. Xavier Duhem, sales manager at Sanac, Amberol’s Belgium distributor says: “Many cities across Belgium are beginning to catch on to the idea of self-watering planters. They realise they create the very best conditions for growing flowers and edible plants, and also reduce the need for maintenance and conserve water, all at the same time. Our customers have used them to create some truly stunning displays.” In Belgium, the British-made self-watering containers can be found in La Roche, La Louvière, and Koksijde, and in the

Green spaces and ‘heroes’ ‘Why Amenity Matters Week’ in September encouraged families and friends to celebrate the enjoyment of local parks and sports grounds, and recognise the contribution of those who maintain green spaces and infrastructure. Launched by the Amenity Forum, ‘Why Amenity Matters Week’ also showed how the UK’s urban spaces, roadside verges, trees, hedges and railway lines are maintained, and how the amenity sector, responsible for caring for this managed landscape, impacts daily lives – helping travel to work and enjoyment of leisure activities, while contributing to the economy and protecting the natural environment. The campaign highlighted how invasive weeds have a negative impact on the economy, and saluted the sector’s ‘unsung green heroes’ who care for green spaces and infrastructure, and ensure they are managed safely. • More than 37 million people regularly use the 27,000 parks and green spaces in the UK.

The Amenity Forum represents the diverse sector behind the maintenance of the managed environment; from manufacturers to suppliers, trade associations, local authorities, major users, landscape, sport and leisure. In the landscaping sector alone, 61,500 people are employed within the UK and the annual turnover for the landscaping services industry is £4 billion. Independent Chairman of the Amenity Forum Professor John Moverley OBE said: “Studies have shown a positive and clear link between mental health and access to parks and green spaces. The unique Xirrafe offers the compact dimensions of the X Lift on a four-wheel drive, cross-country buggy that can to be taken to site on a trailer behind a transit type van, and then driven across rough terrain to difficult access areas. The X trailer offers a trailer unit with compact dimensions – when folded for transport, the trailer is less than 3.5 metres long and only 1.8 metres wide, minimising storage space and maximising accessibility in compact working areas. Extended, the swing of the X trailer boom is within the stabilising legs, ideal when operating next to traffic or in confined spaces such

as shopping centres, and is combined with various power sources including petrol, mains electricity or battery. Although COMET UK is concentrating on the X lifts (with demo Roadshows planned in October and November), larger vehicle-mounted lifts will be available for demonstration in 2018. These include lifts up to 45 metres, including truck and van mounts, a new range of spider lifts, and specialist insulated platforms for main line electrical work to ANSI standards with fiberglass booms and baskets. www.cometuk.com

GKB Drainmaster impresses

The Drainmaster excavates two or three trenches four centimetres wide, which are positioned perpendicular to the existing underlying drainage. Soil is removed by conveyor belts, and can be re-used as dressing soil. The trenches are filled with drainage sand up to the operating depth of 23cm in the same operation, while the Drainmaster wheels press the sand into the trenches.

Phil Day Sports of Worcestershire has added a GKB Machines Drainmaster to its fleet of sports ground construction and maintenance equipment. The company sees the GKB Drainmaster as having a significant role in work with a wide range of customers, including Premier League football clubs, county cricket, top class rugby and golf clubs and independent schools. Global vegetable garden taking root Vegetable varieties from across the world are establishing well in RHS Garden Hyde Hall’s Global Growth Vegetable Garden, thanks in no small part to British Sugar TOPSOIL’s planting topsoil, HortLoam, the major component of the planting medium. The new garden, designed by Xa Tollemache to celebrate the huge range of crops from across the globe that can be grown in the UK, was officially opened in July. The unusual circular design is divided into quarters, each representing a different continent. The garden is finished in Italian porphyry stone, and many of the crops are planted in curved raised beds created from oak sleepers and filled with a blend of two parts HortLoam with one part native clay and green waste compost, providing an open, friable and humus-rich medium ideal for growing vegetables and fruits from around the world. While the garden includes traditional crops (such as

carrots, potatoes, sweetcorn and peas), and ornamental yet part-edible plants (such as hostas, dahlias and amaranthus), some unusual and hard-to grow (in the UK) crops are included, such as heat-loving chickpeas and Asian salad leaves such as mizuna and pac choi. More unusual crops such as tiger nuts, with their coconut-flavoured root nodules, and wonderberries, which can be eaten when fully ripe and used in jams and purees, are also doing well. Bowood Golf Club success Bowood’s championship golf course near Chippenham is set in 2,000 acres of glorious parkland and is renowned as one of the finest courses in Wiltshire. Three years ago, to introduce some biodiversity into their greens, Course Manager Jaey Goodchild began an all bents programme on the course’s 18 greens. To give them the best chance at success, Jaey put his trust in the highest rated cultivars, employing the J All Bent mixture from Johnsons Sports Seed. “The decision to go for an all bent overseeding regime wasn’t one taken lightly,” explains Jaey. “A huge amount of work went into solving any agronomic issues and preparing the ground before we could consider introducing the seed.” A dedicated aeration and topdressing programme was conducted to tackle issues with thatch, creating an environment that would give the seed the best chance to establish. Jaey added: “Once we were happy the ground was ready, we looked into mixtures and cultivars. With it being such a commitment, we wanted a mixture with the highest rated cultivars.” In addition to using the STRI turf grass booklet as a guide, Jaey used his first-hand experience to make the decision: “Prior to joining Bowood, I worked at Richmond Golf Club, where we built a USGA trial plot to trial various varieties. One variety that sticks in my mind is Manor – it performed very well, especially in the colour it produced. That, coupled with its high performance in other trials, means it’s a must-have for me.” Johnsons J All Bent mixture contains 60% Arrowtown, the top-rated browntop bent, and 40% Manor. “This year was our fourth year of overseeding with J All Bent, and we’re very pleased with the results,” says Jaey. “The main benefits are the performance characteristics,

particularly early in the season when the poa is struggling, plus these varieties provide fantastic fineness of leaf and colour. The overseeding approach, together with our cultural management programme, is helping the bent species out-compete the Poa annua, helping to achieve our goal of switching to bent dominated greens.”

Solution for every surface Featuring prominently at Dennis & SISIS (Stand E070) will be the SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid 1500 – a tractormounted vertical action aerator with air injection. Over a three-month period, extensive STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute) trials led by Dr Christian Spring, examined the Javelin Aer-Aid’s effect on the hardness of the turf, the root depth, water infiltration and disease.

“Following successful trials on an established sand-based golf green, this aerator, when used as part of an integrated turf management programme, would be a very useful tool for managing soil and plant health,” said Christian. “It became obvious that the Aer-Aid improved maximum root and depth within the soil profile and also had the benefit of increasing the depth of the average rooting mass.” Visitors will also see the newly launched Spring Tine Rake cassette, specifically designed for the Dennis G860 cylinder mower. It has 42 springs with 12mm spacings that can be used for the removal of dead turf matter, cleaning the surface, and helping scratch through the black crust that commonly appears on the surface thus improving drainage. The SISIS pedestrian scarifiers on the stand will include the Rotorake 600HD (a heavy-duty pedestrian scarifier and linear aerator), and the Auto Rotorake MK5, which can be used for several different tasks including scarifying, verticutting and brushing. Also on the stand will be the SISIS Osca, a tractor-mounted powered oscillating brush, and the SISIS Quadraplay, a single pass maintenance system that incorporates a mounted frame for up to four implements and the SISIS Towed Implement Frame. Also featuring from the SISIS portfolio is the Autoslit and Multislit. Etesia launches Greener City Equipment Etesia will launch its range of Greener City Equipment (stand C050) at SALTEX, including a range of environmentally-friendly battery-powered pedestrian and ride-on rotary mowers. Environmental protection and a commitment to sustainable development in general have always been among Etesia’s key concerns, even before they became the latest buzzwords. That is why Etesia developed its own philosophy called Bio Concept. Environmental protection is addressed in all areas of the company, and at every stage in the life of its equipment.

Centre stage at SALTEX will be the Buffalo 124 HVHPX four-wheel drive ride-on mower, and the Bahia M2E electric ride-on mower. The Buffalo 124 HVHPX is fitted with a 124-cm overlapping cutting deck, and a 23-hp two-cylinder Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine, and has a high hourly mowing output of up to 15,000sq.m. per hour. The Bahia M2E is the world’s first fully electric ride-on cut and collect mower. Featuring all of the benefits of its petrol ‘brother’, it has no odour, with zero emissions, low noise, low vibrations, reduced maintenance costs and reduced health and safety issues for operators. This model was developed around the chassis of the petrol-powered Bahia models, and

SALTEX has a cutting width of 80cm and grass box capacity of 240 litres. Power comes from four acid/lead batteries producing 48v, 115ah, conveniently located under the operator’s seat; they can be re-charged within six hours via a 16amp 200v power socket. Also on show will be the battery-powered pedestrian mowers from the N-Ergy range. The exclusive Duocut cutting deck on the N-Ergy range is a combination of 100% collection and 100% mulching decks, with very high collection performance thanks to the smooth inside of the deck. A full opening of the exit of the ejection channel is favourable to grass cuttings’ removal without clogging, even in extreme weather conditions. Completing the Greener City Equipment range on show is the revolutionary Donky 100% electric wheel-barrow. Visitors to stand C050 will also get the opportunity to see the new Bahia Hydro 80 MKHP4 E-Connect ride-on mower before its official launch in 2018. www.etesia.co.uk

MJ Abbott Returns to SALTEX The past year has seen MJ Abbott complete a number of hybrid pitch re-constructions in the UK and Europe across football and rugby. 2015 saw the introduction of SIS Grass to the turf market, and the popularity of the new hybrid surface has continued into this year, with MJ Abbott the principle company to prepare surfaces ready for stitching by the machines in the UK.

Newcastle United has installed SIS Grass at St James’ Park, with Championship Sides Reading and Birmingham City also installing the system at their respective stadia. Projects were also completed at the training home of Paris Saint Germain, seeing the installation of the HERO hybrid carpet turf system within two training pitches and the match pitch.

SALTEX Rugby was also on the agenda with Doncaster Knights RFC re-constructing its Castle Park pitch to facilitate the installation of an Eclipse hybrid carpet turf system, provided by County Turf. Away from team sports, there have also been several golf projects, including appointment as the main contractors for Royal Norwich’s £4.5million new course project. The company also worked on the multi-million-pound facelift of the West Course at Wentworth for the BMW PGA, which received rave reviews from players and pundits alike. MJ Abbott will be on Stand B102. www.mjabbott.co.uk.

Hybrid is Pitchmark’s new line Following trials with Premier League clubs, Pitchmark will introduce the new Hybrid sports pitch line marker on stand E125 at SALTEX. The product has a wide range of benefits compared to traditional methods, and a lifetime warranty. Mark Rodman, Pitchmark Managing Director, has worked closely with groundsmen at top clubs to create a new approach with a product that offers the benefits of both a transfer wheel marker and a spray marker. “Top stadia groundsmen use transfer markers for many good reasons,” says Mark. “It’s easier to lift the back wheels up to mark over intersecting lines, there’s balanced weight, and groundsmen like to walk slowly, with more control. With a transfer wheel marker, you are using the same amount of paint on a pitch no matter how slowly you walk.” The problems with transfer markers, Mark points out, is they tend to coat only the leaf-tips; to cover more of the leaf, to get the required result, leads to it being double marked. This can also result in a ‘trenching’ effect, due to the continuous heavy weight of the front roller, coupled with loss of grass coverage due to overdosing of paint. The end result is the paint becomes so thick on the leaf it takes much longer to dry. With many modern ‘hybrid’ pitches requiring regular watering, ‘ghosting’ of paint over the pitch is likely. The Pitchmark Hybrid overcomes these problems with a three-wheeled spray design for ease of use, especially on intersecting lines where a conventional four-wheeled machine requires awkward manoeuvring over wet lines. “The Hybrid cone nozzles give perfect deep leaf coverage,” Mark says. “You only need one pass and, because of the depth of the leaf coverage, the line isn’t cut out fully week to week. It’s based on the proven Pitchmark Eco Club and Eco Pro markers spray system. The thin coating of paint dries extremely quickly so there are no issues with irrigation, rain, or ghosting.”

34

www.landscapermagazine.com

The Limited Edition UK-manufactured Hybrid uses a 12V 14ah SLA battery, which gives up to four hours from one charge. The engineered front discs act as the front wheel, leaving crisper lines, while wide, low ground pressure solid puncture-proof rear wheels never go flat, and leave less of a mark on the pitch. Designed for use with Pitchmark’s Direct and Ecoline+ advanced low-volume, ready-to-use paints, the Hybrid also features adjustable line width to suit different competitions and goal post widths. Paint is contained in a 25L moulded tank and the system can be bled into the paint tank for cleaner operation with no wastage. The patent pending Hybrid comes with a lifetime warranty, providing Pitchmark paints are used. www.pitchmark.com

Price Turfcare inaugural Price Turfcare, the newly established business founded by Ransomes Jacobsen’s former sales director, Rupert Price, will be exhibiting at SALTEX for the first time on stand B124.

Following the launch of the business with the Ventrac franchise in January, it has been an exciting nine months building the team, establishing a network of dealers and embarking on a series of demonstration tours across the UK. In July, it was announced that Price Turfcare had added the Ryan franchise to its portfolio to provide customers with a broad range of commercial turf maintenance equipment. Sales have been excellent, with some prestigious clients seeing the benefits of the versatile Ventrac 4500 compact tractor – including Darren Baldwin, Head of Playing Surfaces and Estates at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Peter Pattenden, Golf Courses and Estates Manager at Carden Park, together with Amey, the international infrastructure

SALTEX support services company, and Sheffield Council hiring machines from Russell Groundscare. To understand why these respected businesses have been impressed by the Ventrac product, and to see the latest equipment, visit stand B124.

Ransomes new triplex cylinder mower Ransomes, the Ipswich-based manufacturer of commercial mowing equipment, will showcase the new TR320 triplex cylinder mower on stand H090 at SALTEX. The TR320 is one of the lightest machines on the market, ensuring surfaces are kept pristine. A combination of narrow transport width (1.64m), a 1.83m width of cut, superior slope capabilities and manoeuvrability, allows operators to safely negotiate the tightest of spaces and most challenging terrain. Designed and manufactured at Ransomes Jacobsen’s European headquarters in Ipswich, the TR320 is primarily targeted at the sportsturf and landscaping market, providing a quality maintenance solution for sports pitches, estates, and light municipal applications.

It is an academic test of turf management knowledge for student competitors in teams of four who are enrolled at colleges throughout the UK on relevant courses of study. Ransomes will also be showcasing other municipal mowers, plus Cushman utility vehicles, Iseki tractors and turf maintenance equipment from the Turfco and Ryan brands.

Rigby Taylor new products

The Rigby Taylor stand (G060) at this year’s SALTEX will offer a host of new product launches. Visitors will be welcomed to a newly-designed, interactive stand to enjoy a freshly-made coffee, while discussing the technical features and benefits of an exciting range of turf management and plant health products. Rigby Taylor personnel will offer information and advice, and provide on-stand presentations through the use of touch-screen TV monitors, involving some the industry’s newest technologies. www.rigbytaylor.com

SCAG’s V-Ride 2

Also debuting at SALTEX 2017 is the HM600. Built on the foundations of the Ransomes MP wide area mower platform, the HM600 provides users with the ability to run three heavy-duty flail mowers with mulching technology from Müthing. With all mowers engaged, the 3.2m width of cut delivers exceptional productivity. The fingertip control of individual units makes trimming around obstacles easy and brings new levels of versatility to flail mowing. Units fold up securely to transport easily between work areas and to access confined sites. Ransomes is proud to be sponsoring the SALTEX College Cup for the second time; introduced by the IOG as a brandnew national student-led sports-turf challenge, it will take

The new V-Ride 2, announced on 24th September, has new features that reflect SCAG’s policy of continuous improvement and response to operator feedback. The V-Ride is a stand-on machine; the compact machine size, ease of manouevering and clear view for the operator means the V-Ride is increasingly popular for intricate mowing areas. The ride-on SCAG machines, because they are purposebuilt for grass cutting, place the operator directly above the cutting deck; a feature on the new V-Ride 2 is the revised configuration of the stand-on deck, placing the operator nearer the centre of the machine. Features on the machine are: • Wider stand-on platform • Increased operator comfort with a wider and deeper cushion

Question of sport SCH (Supplies) main focus at SALTEX will be on its range of artificial surface maintenance machinery, with various sweepers, rakes, drag mats, brushes and sprayers taking centre stage. Managing director Andrew Rodwell says this is one of the fastest growing categories of machinery in the company. “We continue to develop our 3G products to keep in line with a very fast moving, evolving sector,” he says. “We work with artificial surface maintenance contractors to ensure our machines are perfect for the job as well as being affordable.” Sports surface maintenance company, ETC Sports of Maldon, Essex, is happy with its great working relationship with SCH. “ETC has worked with SCH (Supplies) for several years, and we continue to be impressed with their ability to interpret our requirements and produce machinery which does an excellent job at an affordable price,” says ETC Maintenance Manager, Rory Wells. “As well as supplying equipment that doesn’t let us down, the after-sales service and support has been absolutely top notch.”

On its SALTEX display, SCH will also have a range of heavy-duty natural turf care equipment, along with other items from its catalogue, including the budget ranges (lawn care, trailers etc.), which have proven very popular with groundsmen. Feedback suggests this range of products is more robust than similarly priced items on the market, but is economical in that it allows the buyers to have more money left in their budgets to invest in other essential items. “We always have a stand at SALTEX because it is the perfect place to let customers see the products, and to ask my team any questions,” says Andrew. “But in the midst of all this serious business, we do like to inject a bit of laughter. So we have a fun competition, and an entertaining giveaway on the stand.” www.schsupplies.co.uk

Sherriff Amenity GoGreen Sherriff Amenity will showcase two new products in the GoGreen complexed iron range. Visitors to the stand (E060) will also be offered the opportunity to sign-up free of charge to the online Sherriff Academy, and find out more about Agrovista’s latest Scottish acquisition – Terra Firma.

The GoGreen range includes the long-lasting iron granules (GoGreen Granules) and in liquid form (GoGreen Plus), plus GoGreen Energy and GoGreen Select. GoGreen Energy is a concentrated bio-stimulant, formulated to assist plant health and relieve stress symptoms in a wide variety of amenity turf situations. GoGreen Select is a unique complex iron sulphate that may be used as a stand-alone product for rapid greening of turf or more flexibly, as a tank-mix partner with fertiliser and herbicide. Visitors to the Sherriff stand will have the chance to trial the online Sherriff Amenity Academy, which they can sign-up for free. The online Academy has been set up to help improve the UK turf amenity sector stewardship of pesticide and products – keeping the industry up to date with legislation and product information and promoting best practise for all products. Recognised as the Knowledge Courses, these modules focus on developing skills and understanding of how to manage a sports turf surface. Users will gain greater insight into the methods and operations of subjects such as Turf Disease, Product Application, Seed and Turf Pests. Sherriff Amenity has joined forces with Terra Firma (Scotland) Ltd – one of Scotland’s largest specialist suppliers to the amenity and local authority markets. The purchase allows the two businesses to combine existing technical expertise and broad product ranges to provide

land managers, local authorities, contractors, groundsmen and greenkeepers in Scotland with a full agronomy service, research driven advice, new product innovation and access to an extensive local distribution network. www.sherriffamenity.com

SIS targets European partners Stem Injection Systems (SIS) arrives at this year’s SALTEX seeking to further develop international distribution channels on the back of recent deals with two new European agents. SIS has confirmed agency agreements with INVAR Biosecurity IE in Ireland, and Vos Capelle in the Netherlands. Both countries have significant issues with invasive, non-native weeds, and are among a growing number of European markets to take an interest in the solution provided by stem-injection equipment. Dublin-based INVAR Biosecurity specialises in the control of invasive weeds on land and water, with its range of weed-control services for species such as Japanese

stem injection as the most appropriate and ecologically sound treatment method is making the treatment ever more popular. At a time when Brexit has thrown European trade agreements more sharply into focus, SIS continues to enjoy unprecedented international interest, with recent equipment sales in Ireland and Holland matched by demand from France, Germany, Switzerland, and the Belgian market. SIS joint managing director, David Layland commented: “SALTEX has long provided a major platform to promote stem injection equipment to potential customers and distributor channels at home and abroad. “These two recent agency agreements reflect a sales strategy of continued market expansion across Europe, and we hope to meet many more potential distribution partners at this year’s show.” www.japaneseknotweedcontrol.com www.steminjectionsystems.com

Bobcat’s Zero Turn Mowers INVAR Director Tom Donovan explained: “Knotweed is a growing problem for many local councils and river authorities over here, particularly in special areas of conservation, and stem injection is recognised as a very environmental treatment solution. We will be representing Stem Injection Systems and actively trying to develop sales of its equipment in Ireland.” The agency agreement with Vos Capelle will see the horticultural supplies specialist hold stocks of steminjection equipment in the Netherlands for sale or hire to its commercial and domestic customers. Sales manager, Bart van Kollenburg commented: “We have a large and growing problem with Japanese Knotweed in Holland and high profile media coverage is increasing general awareness. Alongside this, several recent trials carried out by the prestigious Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) have confirmed stem injection using glyphosate as one of the most effective treatment methods. “We have a wide variety of clients already interested in using this equipment and believe there is a major sales opportunity for Stem Injection Systems in Holland.” Both partnerships come at a time when European legislative restrictions necessitate a focus on reducing the amount of herbicide. Greater awareness of the benefits of

On the Bobcat stand (LO42) will be a range of ‘high productivity’ commercial mowers, ranging from the unique 28” narrow-access unit to the 72” wide area rider mower, and the 36” QuickCat ‘stand-on’ mower, which is probably the most productive Bobcat mower in the range. Great visibility, short chassis and narrow width. Zero turn mowers are among the most productive mowers due to incredible maneuverability, and ability to turn in their own footprint, which can dramatically cut down on grass cutting time, and reduce strimming as the machines can get very close to obstacles. Bobcat mowers offer rotary, flail and mulching options, with side or rear discharge models. www.zeroturnmowers.co.uk

EGO goes pro at SALTEX After just three years, during which time it has helped pioneer the battery revolution in garden equipment, EGO Power+ is taking its industry-leading 56volt cordless system further in to the professional market with its new x-series range.

At SALTEX, EGO Power+ will unveil the new x-series, which features a hedge trimmer, line trimmer and blower and highcapacity backpack battery. The new products have been specifically designed to meet the robust and hard-wearing demands of the professional sector, and can easily match the performance, output, and run time required by professional users on a long-term basis. The company’s full range of battery-powered garden equipment will also be on display. Steve Roskell, EGO’s European marketing director, commented: “SALTEX is the perfect venue for the launch of our x-series, and gives us the opportunity to demonstrate why our products are so much more advanced than alternatives. The professional market is perfect for our battery technology, and was born out at recent trials with a local authority in the East Midlands where the petrol matching performance and incredibly low ‘in-use’ vibration across the entire EGO range gave us a major competitive advantage.” EGO’s success is largely attributed to the brand’s innovative and ground-breaking battery technology, as well as stylish and striking product design, and unrivalled performance that has all the power of petrol. While many other brands have introduced battery options to their line ups, EGO Power+ remains one of the few brands to consist solely of battery products. Integrated vegetation management As the final herbicide treatments of the 2017 season are applied, it is time to start considering next year’s integrated vegetation management programmes, and SALTEX is an excellent opportunity to speak to the experts at Bayer for advice and guidance. The BASIS-qualified Bayer Turf and Amenity Solutions Team will be on stand D037 to give an insight into the future of plant protection products, and show how Bayer products fit into programmes that consider weed control in a wider sense than just chemical intervention. Lewis Blois, Bayer national account manager says: “More and more companies and authorities are asking contractors to consider using alternative methods of control in conjunction with herbicide applications. So, visiting the Bayer stand will give individuals the chance to ask questions about these, as well as find out how chemical controls, such as leading herbicides - Finale® 150 and Pistol®, can fit into any integrated management programme. This year will also mark the first appearance of our latest turf fungicide, Exteris® Stressgard, at SALTEX.”

Dr Colin Mumford, Bayer technical manager, will present a session on the topic of integrated disease management, including product development, application, waste management and stewardship. Also on the stand, will be information on the easyFlow – the first contamination-avoiding, self-cleaning transfer system for liquid plant protection products. “The easyFlow can be secured onto a product bottle to assist with tank mixing and filling, and is proven to improve operator safety by 96%, as well as being an important tool for environmental stewardship,” says Lewis. www.environmentalscience.bayer.co.uk

NatraTex versatility

Limagrain’s grass seed Limagrain UK will showcase its range of grass seed mixtures, including the MM60 and MM50, and the new MM7 on stand H037.

With a proven track record of producing the best possible swards, the MM60 is a 100% Ryegrass formula and the UK’s leading winter-sports renovation mixture, which is also perfect for divot repair. It has extremely fast germination and high wear tolerance, with aesthetic qualities and high disease resistance. MM50 is ideal for cricket squares, tennis courts, tees, fairways, outfields and even golf greens. This hard-wearing mix has rapid germination, very fine-leaved appearance, high shoot density and is tolerant to very close mowing, along with high disease resistance. MM7 is a new mix of fine-leaved Ryegrass, Fescue and Bent, which is suitable for use in bowls, golf greens, and golf surrounds where extreme wear tolerance is needed. All mixtures in the MM range, are treated with Limagrain’s HEADSTART® GOLD to ensure rapid, even germination. Research and development play a key factor in Limagrain’s success, and the company’s extremely high standards for their products are achieved through rigorous testing procedures in their own licensed seed testing facility. In addition, all varieties used in the MM range have been thoroughly tested at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), to meet requirements for play, appearance and maintenance. www.limagrain.co.uk

NatraTex’s innovative hard-landscaping solutions include NatraTex, NatraTex Colour, NatraTex Cotswold and NatraTex ColdLay, and have been widely adopted in many landscaping and development projects across the UK. The NatraTex specialist team will be SALTEX to discuss landscaping solutions, and the products’ versatility. Tailored products are available for heavyduty applications and remedial work. Recent NatraTex projects include Cheltenham Racecourse, Pimperne School, and care homes, housing developments and local highways. NatraTex and NatraTex Colour offer a finishes with the same durable qualities and performance as traditional asphalt. Both materials can be specified in various colours, including buff, red, green, blue, grey and salmon. Manufactured by the BituChem Group, NatraTex pioneered the market for durable and coloured asphalt. Two new innovative products include NatraTex Cold-Lay (a quick-repair product for use in small areas such as bollard replacements or small utility reinstatements) and NatraTex Heavy Duty 10mm (designed for highways applications that see heavy vehicular use). NatraTex Cotswold has proved to be a particular favourite due to its reflection of Cotswold Stone. The material has been used to create footpaths and small roadways that are surrounded by modern buildings using light stone. The materials are supplied to the site hot, and can be applied in one application at any time of the year. The application is completed using conventional equipment, and sets quickly to reduce road or facility closures. NatraTex Colour has been widely used in commercial applications that require a splash of colour. Often used to match the corporate colours of a building or to create multi-

New Reesink launch New to Reesink Turfcare’s product line (Stand H010) is a machine that revolutionises clipping clear up and elevates productivity to new levels, with its 41L fuel tank and 810L capacity hopper, plus the ability to change the height of cut without stopping. Jeff Anguige, national sales manager at Reesink, says:

The Finest Finish you will ever see! Lloyds Range of high quality mowers offer robust designs. They are engineered to give an outstanding performance, with years of trouble free service

PALADIN fine turf mowers along with Paladin Dual and TG give the finest turf, nothing outperforms the mowing excellence achieved by these machines

“This new launch will appeal to councils and landscape contractors looking for minimum downtime. The fuel tank is large enough to power a full day’s work, while the increase in the hopper’s capacity is accompanied by a sensor that alerts the operator when the hopper is full. That prevents unnecessary stopping to check and empty. Changing the height of cut is intuitive and quick with adjustments made possible from the operator’s seat.” Reesink Turfcare’s full line-up will include popular products from Toro turfcare machinery, Toro irrigation controllers and sprinklers, Otterbine lake and pond aeration systems and TYM compact tractors. Products from the Toro groundscare range will include the highly versatile heavy-duty Toro LT-F3000 triple, the Groundsmaster 360 Quad Steer zero-turn mower, the Groundsmaster 7210 zero-turn rotary mower, and the Groundsmaster 4000-D with SmartPower. Concluding the line-up from Toro is myTurf, a fleet management programme that offers automatic log recording of all machines in operation and instant ordering of replacement parts when due. Preventative maintenance, repairs and parts are all tracked online as part of myTurf, allowing for a more accurate calculation for cost of ownership. Representing Toro’s irrigation range is the Lynx Central Control system, and Infinity 55 sprinklers with Smart Access. Also on the stand will be the TS90 and T7 sprinklers with TurfCup, and the Flex 55 sprinklers. Otterbine’s Fractional five-in-one aerator will bejoined on the stand by the Concept 3. Reesink will have two stands at SALTEX, with H080 dedicated to TYM Tractors, with the new T393 and the TS25. The BH120 rotary tiller and TE145 flail mower from the recently launched range of attachments from Sicma completes the line up from Reesink. www.reesinkturfcare.co.uk.

WEEDS

Hot foam weedkiller Estate management specialist Burleys has become one of the first companies in the UK to use a ground breaking environmentally friendly weedkiller which eliminates unwanted flora with super heated foam. The award winning system, Foamstream, developed by environmentally friendly weed control experts Weedingtech, uses a combination of hot water, steam and natural foam to ‘cook’ weeds and kill them. The near boiling point natural foam, approved by the Soil Association, acts as a thermal blanket, keeping heat on the weed long enough to kill it. It also contains a wetting agent which enables the thermal energy to penetrate the weeds’ waxy exterior walls, rupturing the cells, killing them quickly. Some die within minutes, with others taking a day or two. A second application can eliminate taproots. An unexpected bonus is that the foam can also eliminate graffiti and remove chewing gum from pavements. The biodegradable organic system is safe to use near watercourses and in children’s playgrounds, is carbon negative and can be used in inclement weather.

The foam is naturally derived from glucose and fat (otherwise known as alkyl polyglycoside), coconut, palm kernel and rapeseed oils from renewable sources, potato, wheat and maize. Burleys contracts manager Mark Tavener explained: “Foamstream is great for weeds, small woody growth like ragwort and for killing moss in places like tennis courts and play areas - and is excellent value.” www.weedingtech.com

GOLF

Communicating with golfers Technology is evolving at a rapid rate. Karl Hansell reports KARL HANSELL GOLF EDITOR In the previous issue of this magazine I referenced the importance of greenkeepers communicating with golfers, to highlight the good work they are doing on the course, and to raise awareness of problems they may be facing. This need to shout about their efforts is perhaps the biggest cultural shift facing the current generation of greenkeepers, and one that has been exacerbated recently due to the loss of carbendazim, a product that was extremely successful in suppressing casting earthworms. Without carbendazim, there are at present no proven methods of deterring casting earthworms. However, BIGGA as an industry body is continuing to lobby alongside the Amenity Forum and others to find a solution to a problem that if we are not careful could lead to unrest between greenkeepers and their golfers. In an attempt to alleviate this potential conflict, we’ve produced information documents that are available online and are intended to raise awareness of this ongoing situation among golfers. This is just one of the many efforts BIGGA undertakes behind the scenes to support our members, and our hope is that others within the turf maintenance industry will get behind us in these efforts. Elsewhere, and there has been cause for celebration

56

among the association. During October we crowned our 30th champion at the BIGGA National Championship, held at Verulam Golf Club, and congratulations to Christopher Lamb (pictured) in that success. We also hosted the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year awards, which for a second year featured a supplementary Toro Young Student Greenkeeper of the Year category. Finalists ranged from teenagers to those in their mid-thirties, but all were in their first few years within the industry, and it was heartening to see the passion with which these young men and women have embraced their chosen careers. There are undoubtedly challenges ahead, and the solutions may not yet be clear, but while that passion remains, you can be certain that the nation’s golf courses will be produced to the highest standards humanly possible. And BIGGA will be there to support our members every step of the way. karl@bigga.co.uk www.bigga.org.uk

Protecting 25,000 jobs

SCOTLAND’S new forestry bill must do more to secure the future of a £1 billion industry and 25,000 jobs by committing to planting new trees, a leading industry figure has warned. Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor, was speaking after the publication today of the Stage 1 report on the Forestry and Land Management (Scotland) Bill by Holyrood’s Rural Economy and Connectivity (REC) Committee. “This report is a good start but more needs to be done to ensure the new legislation secures the future of the forestry and timber sector, which is worth £1 billion to Scotland’s economy and employs more than 25,000 people,” said Mr Goodall. “I welcome the report’s recognition of the importance of securing future wood production - but I am disappointed that this vital issue is to be left for consideration by future forestry strategies without any recognition of its importance in the Bill.” Mr Goodall said Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary Fergus Ewing and the REC committee recognise the vital importance of wood supply, but there were no guarantees that future strategies, or politicians, would do so. “Wood supply underpins jobs and investment in our rural areas, and confidence in future supply is crucial to maintain

jobs and investment and to deliver broader benefits for our health and environment. “The Bill should say that all future strategies should formally assess future wood supply and how that can be secured.” Mr Goodall added: “I’m pleased that the committee has responded to our concerns about maintaining forestry expertise in any new structure, and suggested a Chief Forester to reinforce this. It is also important that the Scottish Government commits to protecting forestry expertise at the local level. “I also welcome recognition that funds from forest land sales by national agency Forest Enterprise should be reinvested back into forestry, but again, I am disappointed that there is no explicit recognition of the need to protect the large wood resource currently in the stewardship of Scottish Ministers.” There will be a parliamentary debate on the Stage 1 report (link here) by 10th November and if approved, the Bill will move onto Stage 2, with final legislation expected in spring 2018. Confor: promoting forestry and wood, represents more than 600 forestry and wood-using businesses in Scotland. www.confor.org.uk

Gripple, offers a range of cutting edge kits for quick, easy tree anchoring and guying of newly-planted, semimature trees, replacing the laborious installation of wooden stakes, all supplied in ready-to-use kits with a strap tensioning system With three or four anchor points to speed up installation, Gripple Root Ball Kits are for trees from 4.5m to 12m in height and 25cm to 75cm in girth. Long-lasting, allowing trees to establish naturally, the kits remain underground thereby reducing trip hazard and deterring vandals. Offering the benefits of the Root Ball Kit, the Premium Root Ball Kit includes the Gripple Dynamic range to provide increased strength, flexibility and adjustment during installation. Similarly beneficial, Gripple’s Deadman Kit and Concrete Fixing Kit are specifically engineered for the simple, strong and secure anchoring of newly-planted trees where concrete is involved. Call for a £100 million investment We must act now to save our parks, playgrounds and green spaces, says Association of Play Industries New research from Fields in Trust showing the crucial role that parks and green spaces play in all our lives has prompted the Association of Play Industries (API) to highlight once again the alarming decline in playgrounds uncovered in their Nowhere to Play campaign. API Chair, Mark Hardy, says: “The Fields in Trust research shows, for the first time at national level, a direct and statistically significant link between public parks and green spaces and health and wellbeing. “We are at a pivotal point in the ongoing campaign to protect the future of our playgrounds, parks and green spaces. There is a clear picture emerging demonstrating the positive impact that parks have on health, wellbeing and community integration. “We need to act now to reverse the decline in parks and green spaces due to budget cuts and use this and other research data to inform public policy.” The Fields in Trust findings which will be published in full soon, establish a link between an individual’s use of parks and green spaces and an improvement in their life satisfaction, sense of worth, happiness and anxiety levels. The research comes amid news of the newly-established Parks Action Group, a government-created advisory body which will explore options to ensure that communities can benefit from parks and green spaces for generations to come.

“We welcome the formation of the Parks Action Group,” says Mark. “Given the increasingly overwhelming evidence of the health benefits of parks and the negative impact their decline will have, it’s now imperative that Government looks into the future of our green spaces.” The API’s Nowhere to Play report uncovered an alarming decline in playground provision. Between 2014/15 and 2015/16 local authorities across England closed 214 children’s playgrounds with plans to close a further 234. And the recent Heritage Lottery Fund report highlighted cuts to budgets for the running of parks, with 92% of park managers reporting cuts to their budgets over the past three years. “The downward trend in park and playground provision is happening fast and let’s not forget that once a park has gone it’s probably gone forever,” adds Mark. “To take away opportunities for children to play outside and be active - at the same time as we are trying to tackle childhood obesity is counterproductive and it is children in deprived areas who are hit hardest. “The Parks Action Group represents a welcome joinedup approach to safeguarding these spaces and is urgently needed. We now need a clear show of support for playgrounds and the benefits they bring to young people. We are repeating our call for a £100 million investment to replace lost playgrounds and help re-instate children’s access to free play and activity.” www.api-play.org

Back to ‘as new’ When the surface of the artificial multi-use games area (MUGA) at Chipping & District Memorial Hall was beginning to show signs of wear and tear, they called in synthetic specialists Replay Maintenance to bring the surface back to an ‘as new’ condition.

Considered the hub of the community, the Hall offers a range of indoor and outdoor services to local residents and groups using the MUGA in addition to 2 full size football pitches, a skatepark and a children’s play area. The Hall has been a staple part of the village of Chipping since the 1920’s, with a new hall building erected in time for the millennium. In 2006, a sand-based artificial pitch was installed thanks to local fundraising and a lottery-funded grant. “Though the village only has around 600 residents” explains Memorial Hall Treasurer, Simon Hore, “our sports facilities are in use most days. The artificial pitch is used 5 out of 7 evenings a week and additionally at weekends by the locals, as well as a large local football club of around 200 children. Though it may not get the battering that some pitches may get, over the course of a week there are hundreds of pairs of muddy boots running about on it!” P

HARDSCAPER Although the carpet is swept from time to time, in its 11 years of play no real maintenance had taken place meaning a deep clean and some external help was required. “We had a few patches of moss and with any rainfall some areas of the pitch started to hold water. We were told about Replay Maintenance by the local council, so we got in touch and they came to assess our requirements. We decided to go for the full Rejuvenation process which I was very impressed with.” Replay’s unique Rejuvenation process uses constant air-flow plenum technology and compressed air to remove the

contaminated top layer of sand; restore the pile to vertical and fill again with new clean infill. “The work took Replay around a week in July, they also then came back to mark the pitch up for football, 5-a-side and netball when the weather permitted. The process was smooth and the results are clear to see. On the back of this, we have decided to take out a service agreement with Replay which will see them coming in quarterly to keep the surface at its best. This work all-in-all has added at least another 5 years to the lifespan of our facility.” www.replaymaintenance.co.uk

Outdoor learning space Sutcliffe Play has worked with Glenwood School on the development of a £250,000 inclusive outdoor learning and play area.

The school has recently been rebuilt by Essex County Council on land adjacent to its previous site. The school reopened in September 2017 and as part of the new build

HARDSCAPER project the school wanted to include an outdoor space that could be used for both learning and play. Glenwood is a Community Special School for learners aged 3-19 with severe, profound or multiple learning difficulties. This includes learners with autistic spectrum condition and those with complex physical and sensory impairments. The school is committed to creating a happy and positive environment for pupils and staff, with the new playground forming an integral part of their strategy. It was important that the playground wasn’t just about the equipment; it needed to be an outdoor learning space that would engage pupils across four key areas: • Sensory Garden • Balance & Coordination Area • Outdoor Classroom • Inclusive Physical Development Area Inclusivity is at the heart of all of Sutcliffe Play’s proposals and the design team has created an outdoor space for Glenwood School that creates endless opportunities for both learnings and play. The four areas have created clear zones for pupils to engage in different activities:

Sensory Garden This area uses equipment and materials to create a natural playground. Pathways and tunnels are created with wooden equipment, bamboo and planters. They have also introduced pieces that create opportunities that will help to develop and engage sound and vision. A hammock and table and chairs provide settings to develop social skills. Balance & Coordination Area This area features equipment from Sutcliffe Play’s Orchard range. The wooden, environmentally friendly range complements the Sensory Garden with sleeper benches and activity trails to help develop balance. This area also includes an inclusive nest swing that is designed like a bird’s next to allow children of differing abilities to swing together. Outdoor Classroom A gazebo has been installed to create an outdoor learning environment with a chalkboard, benches and tables accessible for wheelchairs.

Natural Woodgrain Decking A new natural woodgrain finish for Composite Wood decking is now available from Composite Wood Company. The new finish has been added to its range to give customers more choice to suit their gardens or holiday homes. Composite Wood is the fastest growing home improvement material and it’s perfect for garden, patio, pool and holiday home decking areas. Its recycled wood polymer material is sourced from timber mills, so it’s been treated and it hasn’t been stained. It’s more durable than timber, and it’s low maintenance, meaning it doesn’t need painting or staining. “We are always looking to add further finishes to our decking to give our customers more choices,” says Tony Pratt, Sales Director of The Composite Wood Company. “Natural woodgrain gives our Composite Wood decking a stylish and great look, it’s hard-wearing, water resistant and easy to install.” Like with all of Composite Wood Company’s decking, the woodgrain finish passes the stiletto test. Its material is made up of 60% timber to help prevent damage and make it strong enough to protect it even from the sharp edge of a stiletto heel. It’s also slip resistant and splinter free to make it safe for young children and pets. The woodgrain finish comes in all four colours that are already available to customers on decking, fencing and railings: ancient black, wild brown, salt lake silver and antique ash. These colours can be mixed and matched to offer unique designs to suit any project, creating contrasting styles with a great woodgrain effect, to add real style to any garden or holiday home. www.compositewoodcompany.co.uk

Soft cleaning Hard cleaning is detrimental to patios in terms of wear – especially for aggregate-based paviors – and damage to joints, particularly where pointing may already be loose. Roxil Wood & Patio Cleaner allows for soft cleaning of patios, as its non-destructive and highly effective formula will remove dirt, moss and algae without resorting to power-spraying and acidic cleaning methods. A clean surface having been achieved, it then needs to be protected and Safeguard – the UK’s leading specialist in damp-proofing and waterproofing technology – has developed an innovative new protection cream. Roxil Patio Cream is a specially-formulated deeply penetrating silicone cream emulsion that that protects patios and paved surfaces without changing their colour or texture. The product weatherproofs the surface of patios and paved surfaces for 10 years with a single coat application and a ‘locked-in’ biocide dramatically reduces biological growth, such as moss, lichen and algae growth. As a result, a Roxil treated patio or paved surface will be easier to clean and will

Earlier this year, the business donated a 1.2m by 1m portrait of music icon David Bowie, which was created using 4000 of its ForgeFast elite performance woodscrews, for sale at a silent charity auction held at the NMBS Gala Dinner. The picture subsequently sold for ÂŁ1000 with all proceeds being donated to CRASH - the construction industry charity which supports homeless and hospice charities with free advice, practical assistance and financial aid. Now, the company aims to go one better with a new portrait of Carrie Fisher. This time, the tribute to the recently deceased actress has been created using over 5000 ForgeFast screws. It features Carrie in perhaps the most famous role of her career - as the iconic Princess Leia from Star Wars. Xavier Duhem, sales manager at Sanac, Amberol’s distributor in Belgium has been selling Amberol products for around 20 years. Xavier explains why the self-watering containers are proving so popular. “Many cities across Belgium are beginning to catch on to the idea of self-watering planters,” he says. “They realise that not only do they create the very best conditions for growing flowers and edible plants, but they also reduce the need for maintenance and conserve water all at the same time. Our customers have used them to create some truly stunning displays.” The self-watering planters have a built-in water reservoir with a series of capillaries to ‘suck up’ the water which is dispersed via an expander pad. Because the water is stored under the soil, it doesn’t evaporate whatever the weather conditions. “The most popular products this year include the cup and saucer hanging baskets and the tiered planters which our customers like because they are easy to plant and have a large water reservoir, making them really easy to maintain even when the weather is hot and dry as it has been this year,” adds Xavier. www.amberol.co.uk

LIGHTING

A Brass Farthing If you want your garden lights to last a lifetime, then choose Brass. Martin Bennett reports The lowest value coins are usually made from Brass. Hence the old saying “I haven’t even got a brass farthing” (A Farthing was a quarter of one Penny when there were 240 pennies to the pound making it a mere 1/960 of a pound! ) Brass is perhaps the most durable metal in common use. It has been used for coins since the 16th Century. Brass is simply Copper strengthened with Zinc, and is exceptionally strong and durable. If you want your garden lights to last a lifetime then choose Brass. Natural Brass is a golden colour which can look fantastic in certain gardens but can also look overtly bold, so is not to everyone’s taste. Aged or antique brass finish is a much more pleasing colour and blends in excellently with a rustic garden environment. An Antique finish will keep its appearance for many years and needs no maintenance apart from the occasional cleaning with water. Until recently most Brass lighting was made for the USA market where 12v prevails, however Lumena have now a large range of both 12v and 240v Brass lights. 240v versions include

84

www.landscapermagazine.com

Path/Bollard Brick lights, Spike lights and Step lights. Although 12v is by far the safer option and less liable to trip, many electricians prefer to use 240v as it can be more convenient to them than using a transformer. In fact, we have found that Lumena Brass lights are virtually trouble free with no water condensation problems common to other types of 240v lights. Wall lights, Path lights, Brick lights, Spreadlights, Spike lights, In-ground lights, Step lights, small Floodlights are all available in Brass from the UK’s largest stockist of Brass lights; Lumenalights.com. Brass needs no maintenance and is also the best material for underwater and fountain applications. Brass need not be expensive, in fact the cost is less than Copper or 316 Stainless steel so remember, for a classic reliable garden lighting scheme use Brass! MARTIN’S TIP OF THE MONTH : To avoid 240v GU10 lights from tripping due to condensation water simply cover the base of the GU10 bulb with lithium grease and also the ceramic bulb holder itself. This will prevent water accumulating on the base and causing short circuits between the 2 GU10 pins or the pins and the bulb holder screws. THE

LANDSCAPER

By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe

Dear Fans Well here we are, only one more issue before our Dear Leader packs his bags and heads off to an unknown destination escaping the cold weather and all the work. We are all trying to work out how he spent last week ‘working’ in Holland and Germany and managed to come back with a suntan. It was intended to be a “floating paradise” for London but instead Joanna Lumley’s vision of a Thames garden bridge has collapsed amid acrimony, with the city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, and his predecessor Boris Johnson arguing over how £37m of public money had been spent on a project without a brick being laid. Khan responded by saying Londoners should be “very angry” about the amount of public money already spent. How can someone get away with wasting £37m? Lock him up I say!

90

www.landscapermagazine.com

I got into trouble last week for going to Waitrose to buy the office coffee instead of The Pound Store. Still as you all know I’m not one to complain. One of my tasks is to organise a competition for our grand November/December double issues. I have been ordered find some suitable prizes. I suspect that my idea for getting Michael Kors to hand over a few of his handbags in exchange for some publicity in The Landscaper will be met with derision. Just looking around the office I’m the only one who tends to look into a mirror before leaving home. The boys in the office seem to have spent hours watching poor Mrs May’s speech. Laughing at a confused elderly lady trying to remember what she has said in the past is in my opinion sexism – I have lodged a complaint. Well that’s all folks see you next month! tabitha@landscapermagazine.com

Lumena Lights Ltd R

Professional Bollard & Path Lights 2017 / 2018

E: sales@lumenalights.com T: 01327 871161

www.lumenalights.com

Lumena Lights Ltd. Professional Bollard & Path Lights Introducing one of the largest and most comprehensive range of stocked illuminated Bollards and Path lights available in the U.K. Back in 2011, I saw a gap in the market for a range of quality Bollard lights. Since then we have built relationships and gained respect within the lighting industry for our extensive range, excellent service and support. We stock spares for all designs, so if lights are vandalised we can always get you out of trouble at your minimal cost and effort. In the past, Bollard lights were usually made to order in the U.K. or EU with a long delivery time and high cost. Metal Halide or Son lamps were the usual light source which, although efficient, took time to warm up and could not be used with a photocell or remote PIR (due to slow warm up time). Today all of our Amenity Bollard and Path lights are designed for use with LED high output lamps or have a quality built in LED light source, allowing you ultimate choice when it comes to brightness and colour temperature, with warm or daylight white options. Lumena Pro-Bollards are available in a black or green powder coated finish, with other designs available in Natural Wood, Brass, Stainless Steel and Anodised Aluminium. Radiata Pine lights blend in beautifully with Countryside surroundings and are ideal for children’s playgrounds, Golf courses and Hotel amenity areas. In Ground Root Mount options are available for when extra stabilitly is needed. Our policy is to stock at least 100 of every design in all heights and colours available for same day despatch, with the exception of Radiata pine where stocks are more limited. We offer a photocell dusk to dawn option on almost all bollard and path lights, which are engineered in house and therefore require 2-3 days production time. This popular option is ideal if you desire trouble free, automated lighting. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than going to a hotel during daylight hours to find all the exterior lights still on, as it is a complete waste of energy. Fit a photocell and take it easy, no need to sack the manager! Finally, please visit our Daventry showroom if you want to check out the lights and our friendly, helpful team!
