Vintage Cuts 1921 was a vintage year for lawn lovers – it was the year in which Atco started manufacturing fine quality mowers for the gardens, pitches and ball courts of Great Britain. For the past 96 years, the company’s lawn mowers have earned an enviable reputation for outstanding performance, and can be found in royal palaces and village greens, from cricket pitches to tennis courts, and from stately homes to beautiful lawns. To produce only the finest cuts, the Atco team ensures no compromise on engine choice for the machines by using engine manufacturers such as Briggs & Stratton, Honda and Kawasaki. Specialist Atco dealers throughout the UK assist in selecting the most suitable lawn mowers for the consumer’s needs. The machine will vigorously inspected, and test and safety checked, by the Atco dealer before handover. Atco dealers provide full aftersales service and warranty support. www.atco.co.uk

The fuel tank is large enough to power a full day’s work, while the generous capacity of the collector is accompanied by a sensor that alerts the operator when it’s full. This avoids unnecessary stopping to check and empty it.” Jeff continues: “With the ProLine, you simply switch the mower on and go, most of the chores are done for you. Once the collector is full, the deck automatically disengages to prevent overfilling or grass going uncollected. Clippings can be emptied into a truck bed effortlessly with the high lift system, which can be raised to almost two metres in height and remotely controlled from the operator’s station.” To further reduce interruptions, the height of cut can be changed between 20 - 110mm from the operator’s seat, enabling quick and intuitive adjustment. Wipe-Out and Green-Out
Optimum Identification
Rigby Taylor has announced two new specialist paints for marking lines on multi-use pitches and training grids where rapid changeover of sports is needed and existing lines and stencils have to be covered up. Both will conceal pitch line markings and stencilled logos.
Leading commercial vehicle manufacturer Isuzu Truck UK has announced the launch of its new website www.isuzutruck.co.uk, with the newly designed and fully responsive website specifically designed for the company’s key audiences, highlighting the various body types and vehicle weights available within the latest Isuzu truck range.
Wipe-Out paints deliver a bright white or vibrant colour line that lasts as long as conditions remain dry, but is easily removed with water – making them ideal for rapid changeover between sports with different line markings. Two formulations are available: Wipe-Out G for use on natural grass, and Wipe-Out S for synthetic surfaces. WipeOut G is applied through a spray or transfer wheel marker, or can be applied with a brush or roller for stencilled logos. The paint is simply removed with a pressure washer or hose with a soft brush attachment. Wipe-Out S is applied as a spray. It is not water soluble, but is removed using Duraline dissolving solution. Also new from Rigby Taylor is Green-Out, a paint that covers up existing lines or stencils through an advanced technology green paint available in both an Impact Readyto-Use formulation or as a Duraline Dilutable Concentrate. Unlike traditional green paint used for this purpose, GreenOut blends in better with the natural grass surfaces. All products available in 10-litre packs. www.rigbytaylor.com

Explaining the rationale behind the new website, Pete Murphy, managing director, Isuzu Truck UK said: “The website redesign makes it as easy as possible for customers to find the product or service information that they are looking for. We have focused on creating as much valuable new content as possible, which takes the form of downloadable industry guides, blog posts and other interesting documents that cover the key topics affecting both our retail and fleet customers.” The new ITUK website has been designed to help customers identify the optimum vehicle selection by identifying all the different Isuzu trucks available, by weight, by body and by industry, with each GVW type having its own product page. Visitors can either scroll through the key facts about the individual vehicle specification or they can download individual spec sheets for more detailed information. The company’s award-winning CARE programme also features prominently throughout the website and is a key part of the Isuzu offering for customers, new and old. At the same time, the site provides a new dealer locator tool, which makes it far easier to identify local Isuzu Truck sales, service and parts dealer support. Featured in the website there are sections covering
NEWS key points within the Isuzu global and UK history as well as showcasing the outstanding technical innovation and expertise that drives the Isuzu R&D and vehicle development programmes. “It was important that within the redesign we provided substantial real genuine value to our customers who visit the site, as well as helping them make the right vehicle choice for their particular application,” commented Pete Murphy. “It’s all about helping our customers by providing them with valuable information to support their ongoing vehicle purchase programmes,” www.isuzutruck.co.uk

The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) has launched two new sales campaigns, one targeting the British public, and the second focused on trade. The public campaign, in association with Headline Sponsor and BALI Registered Affiliate member Gabriel Ash, focuses on promoting a ‘transforming spaces and creating new places’ theme, aimed squarely at the domestic market, designed to specifically raise awareness of the BALI brand to an ABC profile audience that might be looking for local landscapers, garden designers and suppliers in their area. Intelligent Winner Intelligent One (iO), the world’s first autonomous robot dedicated to the hands-free, initial marking and overmarking of sports pitches, running tracks and much more, has won the prestigious Innovation Award at the SALTEX 2017 exhibition. Available from Rigby Taylor – the company at the forefront of supplying innovative products for the successful management and maintenance of turf surfaces – iO combines the latest technology with the award winning, global-leading Impact ready-to-use paint and is ideally suited for multi-pitches and multi-facilities marking. It was for these reasons that a panel of expert judges selected iO the winner over a host of other contenders for the award at SALTEX. Featuring a sophisticated built-in GPS-RTK receiver that links with a portable base station for accurate and reliable global satellite referencing, the iO operating tablet can plot and store multi-use line marking templates. Once manoeuvred into place by the operator from directions sent by the tablet, the iO will, for example, mark out a football pitch – all the perimeter and playing area straight lines, the ‘D’ areas, centre circle, corner angles and even the penalty spot without the operator having any physical contact with the machine. Even pitches with fixed post sockets can be marked. The iO can be programmed to mark multiple pitches at, for instance, a training ground, and will move to an adjacent pitch to carry on marking. It can mark all day because it comes with rechargeable lithium ion batteries and changer. Impact paint provides the brightest, whitest line that lasts, and as it is a ready-to-use formulation, there is no mixing, no measuring no pouring, and no added water. The operator has virtually no contact with the paint since a flow tube is simply inserted into the paint container then the iO

can start marking. The iO is capable of marking the following sports surfaces: football - any length/width and including fixed sockets; rugby (union and league); multi-lane athletic running tracks; tennis courts; and lacrosse, hockey and American football pitches. The iO marking of additional sports surfaces is currently under development. www.rigbytaylor.com
Ecological Imagery Bluesky has supplied high-resolution aerial photography for a major conservation project to protect and transform moorlands in northern England. Purchased by The Moors for the Future Partnership, as part of the Euro16 million MoorLIFE 2020 project, the Bluesky photography provides a bird’s eye view of the area, reducing the need for site visits. The imagery helps identify areas in need of attention, and is used to accurately estimate quantities of materials needed for works. MoorLIFE 2020 aims to improve the ecological condition of 95 sq km of blanket bog in the South Pennines Special Area of Conservation, and reduce its susceptibility to wildfire through re-vegetating bare peat, improving hydrology and diversifying existing vegetation. Co-financed by Severn
NEWS Trent Water, Yorkshire Water and United Utilities, MoorLIFE 2020 also received Euro12 million of funding from the EU Life programme, the largest ever to a UK nature conservation project at the time. “To achieve the project aim, the funding will be spent on ambitious conservation works, extensive scientific monitoring and research, together with a programme of public and stakeholder engagement,” commented Rebecca Cassidy from the Moors for the Future Partnership. “As most of the work is done across wide expanses of rugged moorland, aerial surveys are an effective way to evaluate these areas at scale, and quality imagery is vital.” Using the Bluesky aerial photography within the Partnership’s desktop Geographical Information Systems (GIS), staff has been able to identify and map areas of eroding bare peat and different types and densities of vegetation. This information can be used to inform future works, saving time on the ground and potentially saving money by reducing the risk of over- or under-ordering materials needed in the field. working since 2003 to protect the most degraded landscape in Europe. Using innovative conservation techniques, it has transformed more than 32 sq km of black degraded peat in the National Park and South Pennines. A monitoring programme provides evidence of the effectiveness of techniques used and is backed up by innovative communications. The work of the partnership is delivered by the Moors for the Future staff team, with the PDNPA as the lead and accountable body. It is supported by partners, including the Environment Agency, Natural England, National Trust, RSPB, Pennine Prospects, and representatives of the moorland owner and farming community. www.bluesky-world.com

Increased Fleet The new EC27C is the fourth machine in a line to join C D McNeill’s contracting fleet, who took delivery of the first of its kind to be sold in Great Britain some seven years ago and, prior to that, had a history of operating the Volvo 2.5 tonne EC25s over time. “We recognise the qualities of the Volvo product in terms of reliability, but more importantly, the after sales support that comes as standard from CSM Sales Ltd, which is why we’ve decided to replace like with like,” says Grant McNeill. Joining a mixed fleet of equipment that includes compact excavators up to seven tonnes as well as site dumpers and rollers, the EC27C is powered by a Volvo 1.6 litre low-emission, Stage III engine, coupled to a load-sensing hydraulic system for optimum performance and fuel saving. The EC27C features Volvo’s industry-leading comfortable cab for less fatigue and more production. Harrowden_Landscaper_Jun16_Layout 1 14/06/2016 11:33 Page 1

Student’s design shortlisted Writtle University College postgraduate student Eunjung Jun’s garden design for the Salvation Army’s Hadleigh Training Centre near Southend has been shortlisted for a Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Student Award. There are nine other shortlisted entries, with results announced in February 2018. Eunhung’s Life Cycle Garden features naturalistic and wildlife-friendly planting, which changes with the seasons, offering a colour-changing view throughout the year along with new seasonal opportunities for teaching horticultural practices to trainees. As well as showcasing trainees’ work, the garden would provide public spaces for socialising, meeting, and connecting with nature. Eunjung suggests it could also be a space for community seasonal events, such as a summer film festival or decorating Christmas trees. NEWS Eunjung completed a conversion course in Garden Design at Writtle University College last year, and is now studying for an MA in Garden Design. She said: “I am absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for this award. My garden design could give tutors at the centre the opportunity to plan their teaching around the seasons, from taking cuttings to harvesting vegetables, from flower arranging to cooking with the fruits from the native hedgerows.” Eunjung completed the project under the guidance of garden design lecturer Steve Terry. He said: “I am thrilled for Eunjung, who has taken quite a difficult brief and created a design that works on many levels incorporating education, ecology, horticultural opportunities and revealing the work of the Salvation Army to the wider public. “The design is sophisticated and successful in bringing all these elements together. I wish Eunjung the best of luck with her nomination; it is well deserved.” More information about the awards at www.sgdawards.com/2017-finalists/4594068517 www.writtle.ac.uk

At Fields in Trust, our latest research shows a direct link between using parks and green spaces and positive health and wellbeing but, despite their clear health benefits, parks and green spaces are facing an uncertain future all across the UK. Cuts to local authority budgets are making it increasingly difficult to maintain these non-statutory services and this, coupled with continued development pressure, leaves our parks and green spaces in a vulnerable position. Recognising the UK’s favourite parks is a way of highlighting their contribution to our communities. I congratulate the four shortlisted parks, and wish them all the very best of luck at the Fields in Trust Awards later this month.” Awards host, sports presenter and journalist Jacqui Oatley said: “I am delighted to be hosting this year’s Fields in Trust Awards and can’t wait to hear stories of the fantastic work being done on green spaces across the UK.” Fields in Trust is a national charity that operates throughout the UK to safeguard recreational spaces and campaign for better statutory protection for all kinds of outdoor sites. www.fieldsintrust.org
Property Listings Fall The latest Property Supply Index compiled by online estate agents HouseSimple.com reveals new supply levels have fallen again in October. HouseSimple.com figures show the total number of new properties marketed by estate agents across the UK last month was down 4.3% on September, and 1.2% lower in London. This follows a 20% spike in new listings in September, after a quiet summer. Every month, HouseSimple.com analyses the numbers of new properties listed by estate agents in more than 100 major UK towns and cities to compile its Property Supply Index. The latest Index reveals that three quarters (75.2%) of UK towns and cities saw new property listings fall in October vs. September, with supply dropping 37.4% in Torquay and 37.0% in Oxford. Wolverhampton also has the unenviable accolade of being the only city in the UK where new property listings have fallen for the fifth consecutive month. Alex Gosling, CEO of online estate agents HouseSimple. com, comments: “A shortage of new properties coming
onto the market has been an issue for as long as anyone can remember, and despite a substantial boost in supply in September, levels have lapsed again in October, albeit they only retreated 4.3% which is cause for some optimism. “The housing market is in desperate need of a prolonged period of supply growth rather than isolated months where seller numbers rise, only to fall back the following month. We probably won’t see numbers jump again this year, but steady levels in November and December would at least give the market a strong base going into the New Year, particularly with some heavy Brexit headwinds heading our way. The Government can also play its part by delivering a positive Autumn Budget for the UK property market in a couple of weeks’ time. A shake-up of the stamp duty tax system would be a good start.” www.HouseSimple.com
Tackling Microdochium Patch How to manage Microdochium Patch, the disease that occurs on more than 90% of UK golf courses, is addressed in a new guide from Bayer. Dr Colin Mumford, Bayer technical manager, explains the guides covers all aspects of managing the plant disease – from understanding the issue and identification, to preventing and curing the disease. “Pesticides continue to come under increasing regulatory pressure,” says Colin. “For this reason, greenkeepers should be looking to implement an integrated approach to disease management, with the view of reducing reliance on chemicals. The guide clearly explains that cultural and biological practices should be considered ahead of any pesticide usage. It’s all about reducing the risk of disease outbreaks so that chemical applications are limited.” If chemical control is required, Colin notes the

NEWS importance of selecting the appropriate fungicide for the individual disease outbreak: “Whether you need a systemic or contact acting product, or want to know how to rotate fungicide groups, the guide will assist in your decision. It really is a one-stop-shop to helping greenkeepers tackle Microdochium Patch.” The recent news about the withdrawal of all products containing iprodione, including Chipco® Green and Interface® from Bayer, reinforces the importance of an integrated approach to disease management. “The loss of iprodione alone reduces the available number of fungicide groups for turf managers from six to five,” comments Colin. “With other chemicals also due for assessment, a further reduction in the total number of products on the market for turf disease control is to be expected. It’s therefore important for turf managers to appreciate that the continued pressure on contact acting chemistry will mean that they need to adopt a preventative disease control strategy.” The guide is available from the Bayer website. www.environmentalscience.bayer.co.uk

Dan Shemesh, Director of Stadium and Training Grounds for the New York Red Bulls, has praised the SISIS Osca 3, which maintains the synthetic turf on one of the club’s training fields. When Dan Shemesh was looking for a machine that would help take his synthetic turf to the next level, he found the solution in the form of the SISIS Osca 3 tractor mounted oscillating brush. “We previously had a problem of matted down fibers on the synthetic turf, so I needed a machine which would help revive the laid over fibers,” says Dan. “CS Trading LLC recommended the SISIS Osca and they arranged a demonstration for us. We saw an immediate result both visually as well as through field testing.” The SISIS Osca 3 is a tractor-mounted powered oscillating brush with a 1.9 meter working width, and is equally effective when used on synthetic turf with sand or rubber infill. The two oscillating brushes stand the carpet fibers up

NEWS and redistributes the infill evening, minimizing compaction on the surface and improving its performance – giving consistent playing characteristics while preventing pile damage caused by reduced infill levels. A contributory factor to the reduction of compaction is that the Osca’s working width will use fewer passes than other more conventional drag brushes to complete a pitch. Its aggressive brushing action agitates the upper infill level of the surface from side to side, as well as brushing forward, helping reduce surface compaction and encourage the fibers to stand up straight, which reduces the risk of contamination, drainage problems and leaves a consistent playing surface across the whole pitch. Dan, who uses the Osca on a bi-weekly basis, has
reported excellent results since using the product: “The SISIS Osca is a great machine to keep fibers standing up in synthetic turf and the dual oscillating brushes work in a different way to any other product on the market – in fact that was a key feature in me purchasing the machine.” “This product will save us money in the long run as it will eliminate the need for bringing in contractors and it will extend the life of our synthetic turf. The Osca is also incredibly simple and easy to operate – we just attach it to our tractor using the correct PTO – and adjust the speed depending on the level of brushing needed.” “I would absolutely recommend the SISIS Osca to anyone who is looking to improve their synthetic turf – it has now become a staple in our synthetic turf maintenance.” www.sisis.com
Alleviating Drainage Problems
The original course at Hartley Wintney Golf Club dates back to 1891, when it was laid out as a traditional 9-hole parkland course. An extra nine holes were added in 2000, to offer a well-laid out variation of both traditional and new designs. While the new holes and six of the original ones have sand-based greens, three of the old soil greens (now the 11th, 12th and 17th)

were retained. The 17th is a lovely Par 3, protected by a channel of trees and a small green. As one of the original holes, it is regarded as a gem and most peoples’ favourite hole on the course. However, the original greens had a drainage problem, particularly holding too much moisture in winter. To alleviate this, for both aesthetic and cost-effective

NEWS considerations, Hartley Wintney GC called on the services of Terrain Aeration. The greens are cut using a John Deere 2500E, which reduces triplex ring with exclusive offset cutting units, and a Baroness LM55 Pedestrian. Prior to the Terrain Aeration treatment, a Verti-Drain was used with 12mm diameter tines to a depth of 250mm to open up the surface and allow the compressed air to escape during treatment. A Toro ProCore was also used to remove thatch from the surface. Following preparation, Terrain Aeration moved in with the specialist Superscamper Terralift deep penetration aeration system, working two metres apart, to blast air at 18 bar pressure to break up the compaction and panning. Where the ground is exceptionally hard, the specially incorporated JCB hammer drives the probe down to the one metre depth, where it releases the air blast, followed by the injection of dried seaweed. This serves to maintain
the aeration to get oxygen to the grass roots, and continue to relieve compaction – the seaweed swells with moisture, keeping the fissures open. The compressed air exits through the previously created Verti-Drain slits. “The greens were back into play immediately,” says Matthew Rolls, the club’s Course Manager. “One green needed a little levelling to deal with some high spots, but that was to be expected. We then backfilled the holes with Lytag and topped up with rootzone. The two guys from Terrain Aeration were very good, exceptionally helpful, and a pleasure to have on the site.” Terrain Aeration has been treating golf courses, sports pitches, amenity areas, trees and gardens for over twentyfive years using the Terralift deep penetration aeration system, and has a long history of testimonies to the effectiveness of the treatment. www.terrainaeration.com

consultants and specialist recruitment companies. There will also be employees from genomic research centre the Sanger Institute and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science. Three workshops will include: concentrating on social media and how to use it to find work; the practicalities of running your own business; and, how to survive assessment centres. Mark Yates, Careers Coordinator at Writtle University College, said: “The nature of our specialist courses means that there are some very interesting career options for our students, such as a nutritionist, an equine behaviour consultant or a government research scientist. Nearly 97% of the last Higher Education cohort surveyed were either working or undertaking further study. “The Careers Fair has grown every year, and aims to bring together a breadth of organisations to inspire students with the career possibilities that could be open to them. “Employers really value the chance to talk to students about their future options, and students gain a lot from talking to employers about how their studies are relevant to different opportunities. It’s a great chance for students to think through how their studies will improve their future career and studies.” www.writtle.ac.uk

Enhanced EC18D The 1.8 tonne Volvo compact excavator was supplied to proprietor Willie Paterson by SMT GB’s utility dealer, Rockbreakers UK, and replaces an older EC15B which was originally purchased back in 2005. W.T Paterson is a familyrun business, based in Stirling and covering Central Scotland and the surrounding areas. “We’ve been really pleased with the original machine and that prompted us to replace it with the enhanced EC18D with the extending tracks and two-speed travel,” says Willie. “The machine does everything we want of it on site from getting into quite restricted areas to clean out conveyor belts, breaking concrete to expose broken water mains, maintaining ditches and water courses on the property boundaries and general ground maintenance,” he says. “We have the usual assortment of buckets. A hydraulic hammer and, more recently, we’ve added a hedge and ground cover cutter which runs off of the third line.” The Volvo EC18D features a D0.9A Volvo diesel engine that meets the latest EPA Stage-IV emission regulations. Emissions are further kept to a minimum thanks to the optional automatic idling system, which reduces
engine speed to idle if the controls are inactive for more than five seconds. If the machine is left idling for longer, the engine can be automatically shut down. This then stops the hour meter, leading to longer service intervals, lower operating costs and ensuring a better resale value for the machine. www.rockbreakers.co.uk

Iconic London landmark development wins Grand Award
On December 1 st the 41st BALI National Landscape Awards, BALI Registered Contractor Maylim received the coveted Grand Award for One Tower Bridge, a stunning mixed-use development directly adjacent to one of London’s most iconic landmarks. A BALI member since 2013, Maylim has achieved the BALI Grand Award with the company’s first BALI Awards entry, an incredible achievement. The BALI National Landscape Awards, in association with Horticulture Week and headline sponsor Greentech, are held annually at London’s Grosvenor House on Park Lane and are the largest landscape Awards scheme in Europe. They recognise the excellence in landscape design, construction and maintenance, and in Affiliate customer service, achieved by Registered members of the British Association of Landscape Industries. 115 entries were received this year and 80 awards made. The Awards ceremony was hosted by popular BBC journalist and Breakfast business presenter Steph McGovern, who addressed the record-breaking audience of over 1000 BALI members and guests during the luncheon and joined Awards sponsors on stage to present the 29 Principal and Special Awards. The presentation of the Grand Award to Maylim’s Managing Director Thomas O’Mahony, was made by headline sponsor Green-tech’s
Sales Director, Richard Gill. Maylim, who are based in North London, were awarded the Grand Award - BALI’s highest accolade - at this year’s ceremony for their landscaping of the One Tower Bridge. The BALI Awards adjudication panel highlighted the company’s attention to detail throughout the project and their ability to overcome huge logistical challenges as key to their Awards success. Although Maylim have undertaken numerous high profile projects, including Phase one of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment and work to extend Tate Modern, this is the first time they have entered a project into the BALI National Landscape Awards. Commenting on the company’s achievement, chair of the adjudication panel Greg Allen said: “One Tower Bridge is a magnificent advertisement for British landscaping and Maylim is a worthy recipient of the 2017 BALI Grand Award. To receive the highest possible landscaping accolade at their first attempt is remarkable. This year I and my fellow judges were, once again, faced with having to select one scheme that shone out from amongst the other Principal winners that we had identified as truly exceptional. Our choice of One Tower Bridge as the Grand Award winner was unanimous and we applaud and congratulate everyone at Maylim for delivering a beautiful piece of landscaping artistry.”

SALTEX SALTEX 2017 | 1 - 2 November | NEC Birmingham
THE BEST YET
A year’s worth of meticulous and strategic planning from show organisers culminated in what is being hailed by many as the best ever SALTEX.
The two-day exhibition has quickly grown to become the premier annual grounds care event in Europe and on 1 and 2 November, the halls of the NEC, Birmingham were a hub of innovation, inspiration and opportunity. Ahead of the 9am opening, a huge queue of visitors stretched beyond the three mighty halls of 6,7 and 8 and it wasn’t long before the show floor was packed with grounds care enthusiasts from all over the globe. More than 300 exhibitors showcased their products and services; Learning LIVE, SALTEX’s all-encompassing education programme, featured over 100 high-profile speakers who tackled a number of key issues, and other show features – including Pathology and Soil Science Live, Ask The Expert and the Job Clinic offered invaluable free advice and career progression opportunities. The Outdoor Demonstrations area enabled visitors to see some of the latest equipment in action and attendees also had the chance to see every entry in SALTEX’s new Innovation of the Year Award. Exhibitors reported constant engagement with a high
calibre of attendees across the two day event as visitors immersed themselves in the vibrant atmosphere and unparalleled interaction. The SALTEX buzz was captured by all and social media channels became a frenzy of show photos, selfies, videos and positive comments – so much so that at 11am on 1 November, #SALTEX17 registered as the third most trending topic in the UK. Furthermore, not a moment was missed through the all new SALTEX TV. Learning LIVE discussions, panel debates and presentations, as well key interviews with visitors, experts and exhibitors were all broadcasted live on four large screens throughout the show floor. Despite a turbulent year of economic uncertainty, SALTEX successfully united every corner of the grounds care industry. As the only independently-audited show of its kind in the UK, the IOG has never shied away from being transparent with visitor numbers and the official figure will be released as soon as the audit has been completed. www.iogsaltex.com

SALTEX The BigMow robot can cover up to 2 hectares (20,000 m2), making it ideal for sports fields, golf courses, public areas and public or private parks, etc. The robot uses an underground wired perimeter for navigating; this sends an electromagnetic signal recognised by the robot, via a sensor, that determines its distance from the edge of the grass area. BigMow has a total of 15 cutting blades all sharp as a scalpel, that pulverise the grass into very fine particles. This mulching technique is how they produce the perfect cut that creates healthier, greener grass areas along with other benefits such as: The mower can operate day and night, provides the perfect cut with minimal human intervention. Designed to cater for large areas and professional applications. It improves the quality of the grass and lets you make significant savings. TEL : 01462 676222 www.automatedmanagedservices.com

GOLF
Essential work needs completing KARL HANSELL GOLF EDITOR
There was a time when the dark winter months were the quietest out on the golf course. Things have changed Karl Hansell reports
Having played a round at Seaton Carew’s characterful links a few weeks ago, I can confirm this is no longer the case. Reduced green fees meant passing punters were visiting the course, members sought to get their fill, and greenkeepers, delayed by an early morning frost, found themselves contending with golfers to squeeze in mowing, hole changing, and the completion of bunker renovation projects. It made for one of the least peaceful rounds I’ve ever played, and frustrations in our party grew at the sheer amount of traffic. But what else could be done? The essential work needs completing if golfers are to continue to enjoy the standard of course they have become used to. Within these pages, and within the pages of BIGGA’s own publication, Greenkeeper International, we have lamented the loss of valuable products that have been in the greenkeepers arsenal in the past, such as Carbendazim, which combated casting earthworms. As an industry insider, it came as no surprise to me to see small piles of mud around the course. I knew what was going on, but the golfers I was playing with had no idea. It’s a long-term goal of the Association to remedy this, to ensure every golfer knows what’s happening out on the course. With winter underway, it isn’t just golfers for whom
56

education is at the forefront of our thoughts. For BIGGA members, term time has started, so to speak; regional conferences are held across the country, where world class speakers deliver the latest education, ensuring BIGGA members are the most highly trained within the industry. There are also major education events hosted by greenkeepers themselves, such as the bunker camps – first hosted at Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland and now spreading to other venues – where greenkeepers from across the country come together to share their ideas on how to improve their courses. And this education period culminates during one week in January, when Harrogate in North Yorkshire becomes the epicentre of the turf management industry. BTME 2018 promises to be an incredible event, featuring the biggest names in the industry. The Continue to Learn programme and Golf Business & Industry Convention will be two other highlights of the whole BTME spectacle. I would encourage anyone involved with the turf management industry, whether you work on a golf course or not, to get along to the event, where you’re sure to find inspiration, knowledge, and a whole host of networking opportunities. karl@bigga.co.uk www.bigga.org.uk

Boots Hold Up Under Pressure
Looking after a football pitch is a high-pressure business when the turf you’ve treated, mowed, nurtured and manicured is seen by thousands of spectators at the ground - even more so if the match is televised. Providing a top-quality playing surface is an everyday reality for Grounds Manager John Ledwidge and his team at Leicester City Football Club’s King Power Stadium and the nearby training ground. John Ledwidge explains how he maintains the high standards at the club and comments on a recent footwear trial they undertook.
The Groundsmen We are a unified team focusing on pitch care and landscaping at both sites. In 2015 and most recently this year, we won the prestigious Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) Professional Football Grounds Team of the Year award, evidence of our dedication and skill. Britain leads the way in pitch care, management and design with science, technology and the latest machinery widely used to plan and improve the quality of the playing surface in football. But with this comes a real health and safety requirement for its groundsmen. Callum Allsop, Head Groundsman at the training ground said “We prepare a safe and playable surface for the players but we also have to stay safe and protected.” Typical working pattern The football season begins in mid-August and completes mid-May, but summer isn’t all rest and holiday. During summer, pitches are renovated, reseeded and once the seed come through, it’s back to daily mowing and turf care. My team endure hot sun and cold frosts in equal measure throughout the year, with nearly all their time spent outside. Safety clothing and footwear protection play an important part so they can keep safe, dry and comfortable during work. On any given day, regardless of weather, we may be brushing

off morning dew, power washing machinery clean, mowing in wet conditions or long grass and carrying out irrigation work, sometimes walking up to 14 miles a day. Gore and HAIX Collaboration In 2015 HAIX safety shoe manufacturer, in close partnership with W.L. Gore and Associates (UK) Limited created new leather and textile boot designs under the name, Black Eagle 50 Mid utilising GORE-TEX® Extended Comfort product technology. These lightweight boots feature a unique lacing system, which ensures that laces do not dangle into mud or water when putting on or taking off the footwear. It is rated to standard EN ISO 20345:2011 safety footwear for professional use with the classification 1 of S3. S3 classified boots offer basic requirements for a safety boot, as well as closed and energy absorbing seat region, antistatic, protection from water penetration and absorption, penetration resistant and cleated sole.
Gore and Haix offered us a wearer trial of the HAIX GORETEX® Black Eagle 50 Mid boot, with all the team testing the boots from January to March 2017. (In fact, the boots are still in active service and worn daily by us.) Questionnaire Results and Comments After three months, questionnaires were completed by the team to provide honest and detailed feedback on the performance of the boots. Feedback showed that 100% found the boots waterproof, with 80% saying sweat levels were far less than in previous boots they’d worn. 100% found the weight of the boot good or very good, thus avoiding tired and heavy feet. 90% said temperature was pleasant when indoors and also when outdoors in varying temperatures. 100% found the comfort of the footwear good or very good and all found them better than their previous
boots. Asked to comment on re-drying qualities, replies included “always dry by morning”. The whole team said they would recommend the boots to colleagues. Paul Billington, a groundsman at the club for the last 18 years said: “they’re a lot better than any I’ve had before. The rest either hurt your heels or made your feet ache. My feet were cold in winter in previous boots, but fine in these.” Groundsman Nick George stated: “In icy conditions they’re much better underfoot, they’re very grippy and hardwearing and they also keep the water out. So you might come in and my feet will still be roasting even though it’s freezing outside.” Conclusion My groundsmen put these boots through their paces and the results speak for themselves with positive feedback from the team, who appreciated the science behind the durable and breathable waterproof GORE-TEX Extended Comfort Technology. It seems that having the right boots makes a massive difference and I believe happier people produce better work. www.gore-tex.co.uk/professional www.haix.co.uk/workwear

ARBORIST
In the wake of Hurricane Irma
Specialist disaster relief charity DART International UK, the response team of volunteer British arborists, has again deployed teams to the stricken Caribbean in the wake of Hurricane Irma which hit the region. This, one of the most powerful and catastrophic Atlantic Ocean hurricanes recorded, has claimed many lives, destroyed homes, schools and hospitals, and has accounted for mass evacuation in the face of life threatening wind impact. Just days later, Hurricane Maria followed the same path of destruction. Flying initially to Barbados, then directly on to mountainous Dominica, 90% destroyed, the DART team began a two-week mission to aid the relief campaign so urgently needed, with a second team following a fortnight later. “Getting to the scene promptly is essential to assist with the clearing of fallen trees on roads and the repair of other vital infrastructure. This is an immediate priority which allows rescue organisations and aid agencies to operate
more safely and effectively,” says Jenny Long, a volunteer and wife of a DART member. “Local community leaders and volunteers really value the service our teams deliver, but more importantly they’ve demonstrated an appetite for learning the skills themselves. From previous deployments we learned that by delivering training and donating essential items such as chainsaws, timber milling equipment and personal protective equipment we could help rebuild livelihoods and make some of the most vulnerable communities in the world more resilient to future disasters. The situation in the Caribbean is exactly what we are trained to deal with.” DART responders are all professionally qualified and experienced arborists who also bring a wealth of additional skills. Volunteers include paramedics, trainers, engineers and former military personnel offering skills that are very relevant to the complex challenges of helping communities to recover from a natural disaster. >>

Should we have apprentices for managerial positions? Following the successful launch of the arborist, forest operative and horticulture and landscape operative apprenticeships in England, earlier this year, the employerled partnership behind the initiative is now asking the question, does industry require apprenticeships for managerial or advanced technical roles? The trailblazer partnership, which includes 50 industry employers, is now investigating if there is demand for managerial or advanced technical apprenticeships, by consulting with employers in the sector, to determine if new apprenticeships are necessary, and what skills they should contain. A coalition of arboriculture, forestry, horticulture and landscape industries have already been successfully developing apprenticeship standards since 2015, under the

new process, often known as ‘trailblazer’. Trailblazers continue to be at the forefront of Government apprenticeship reforms in England and apprentices are now being recruited to the three new standards, which were announced in the summer. A fourth apprenticeship standard for horticulture and landscape supervisor, is currently in the approval process. Simon Rotheram, managing director of Beechwood Trees, commented “It is vital that the industry provides feedback on the requirement of a new apprenticeship for managers. A lack of informed response now, may result in the wrong decision being made for future generations, resulting in a major skills gap for supervisor level arborists, and other supervisory industry roles, looking to develop their careers into more managerial positions.” If you think your organisation might benefit from an apprenticeship for managers or advanced technicians, it is imperative that you complete the questionnaire, before the 2nd January. Safe Sex in the Garden Barcham Trees secured another great ‘catch’ for its series of arboricultural seminars when it lured Tom Ogren from California to present a seminar at its Cambridgeshire nursery. He is one of the leading experts in the field of allergenic plants and their impact on people and communities. He devised the OPALS (Ogren Plant Allergy Scale) which is now used by, among others, the American Lung Association and the USDA Urban Foresters. Colin Hambidge reports The scale measures the allergy potential of all garden and landscape plants within a range of one to ten; the higher a plant’s rating the higher its risk of being an allergen. For example, Acer rubrum Autumn Glory is rated at one, while Callistemon citrinus (bottlebrush) is rated at nine. More than 130 different criteria are used to develop allergy rankings for plants. Each factor is either positive or negative. All factors are not weighted the same because some are more important than others. Most plants will have a combination of positive and negative factors that are computed to determine their OPALS ranking. Some of the factors used to rank a plant include the amount of pollen produced, the potency of individual pollen grains, length of flowering, the size, density, shape and weight of the pollen grains, sex if dioecious, average rankings in actual skin scratch, patch and sniff tests, and cross-reactivity to food allergies. Additional information regarding the factors used to build OPALS may be found in Tom’s book Safe Sex in the Garden. Tom Ogren’s main objective now is to help drive a robust, healthy trend toward allergy- and asthma-friendly gardens and landscapes in urban areas. For 30 years he has been researching the connections between the planted urban landscape and human health, in particular pollen-allergies and asthma. He has published three books on this subject, the latest being The Allergy-Fighting Garden. His interest in the subject began around 30 years ago when his wife, to whom he has been married for 50 years, developed asthma and allergies. At the time, Tom read a book which claimed allergies were actually psychosomatic; this was a theory he was happy to accept at the time, but as his wife’s problems increased he grew to realise the theory was not true. “Allergies affect how we perform in our lives and can have major negative impacts on us”, says Tom. Dioecious plants - those which are either wholly male or
wholly female - are of particular interest to him. Dioecious trees include willow, red maple, holly, yew, juniper, mulberry and bay. While urban trees, and especially those in public areas, are predominantly male and therefore shed no fruit onto pavements, female trees produce no pollen and so may be termed ‘allergy-free’ or ‘allergen-friendly’. Tom Ogren is a great advocate (one might almost say ‘evangelist’) of female trees and of female plants in general. He is an avid plant collector and claims to have the largest collection in the world of female cultivars of trees, shrubs, vines and grasses that are useful in landscapes because they are totally pollen-free. He is also a consultant to states, cities, counties, schools, hospitals, and has worked for pharmaceutical companies. He lectures frequently to healthcare professionals, city planners, arborists, landscapers and nurserymen, and now has several partners in a commercial venture to get many more pollen-free plants available to the public. So how big is the problem of allergies? Tom told us that in 1950, it was thought that two to five per cent of the population of the USA had pollen allergies. This figure had grown to 12 per cent in 1988 and had rocketed to 38 per

cent by 1999. Asthma is the most common chronic illness of childhood in the USA, and developing pollen allergies more than doubles the chance of a child developing asthma. In 2017 the charity Asthma UK (www.asthma.org.uk) reported there are currently 1.1 million children (1 in 11) and 4.3 million adults (1 in 12) receiving treatment for asthma. The condition also increases the risk of developing heart disease and leukaemia, while women who have airborne allergies are at an increased risk of ovarian and breast cancers (Cell Biology, 2010 Study). Tom also mentioned more women than men suffer from asthma. Another charity, Allergy UK (www.allergyuk.org), reports that 44 per cent of adults in Britain suffer from at least one allergy, and the number of sufferers is on the rise, growing by around two million between 2008 and 2009 alone. Almost half (48 per cent) of sufferers have more than one allergy (Mintel, 2010). While pollen is capable of travelling considerable distances, Tom told delegates most lands very close to where it originated. For twelve years, he taught

landscape gardening in a California Youth Authority maximum-security prison, and he has also worked with the University of California Cooperative Extension, to establish community gardens in the Los Angeles inner city. While he is an advocate of using female plants in landscapes and gardens, he does not feel they should be used to the exclusion of male and monoecious plants (those which have both sexual reproductive systems on the same plant). “All plants are useful - in the right place”, he says. “”I would now never plant pollen-producing plants near doors, windows or too close to any part of a dwelling, but they can still be grown elsewhere”. It disappoints Tom that so many landscape and garden designers limit themselves to around only 12 different plants, which they use in most of their projects. “It’s boring, and I much prefer plenty of diversity in planting schemes. Diversity of planting acts as a safety net or insurance policy”. www.allergyfree-gardening.com www.safegardening.org

Eliminating safety, health and environmental concerns
Clubs across the country are starting to play on the first artificial pitches that feature all the benefits of the highest performance infill while eliminating safety, health and environmental concern. PRO-gran has literally ‘changed the game’ in highperformance infill for artificial sports pitches. A polymeric infill that is engineered to offer the very best in performance and is safe for players and the environment, PRO-gran combines the exceptional dynamic properties of rubber which is then coated in polyurethane to make it 100% safe. It has been thoroughly tested and exceeds the EU’s toughest toxicology standards since it releases no heavy metals, PAHs or micro plastics. Shelford RFC were the first rugby club to have turf laid with the unique PRO-gran infill as part of the new pitch installed by leading UK artificial grass manufacturer TigerTurf. Club Secretary Dr Leslie Gelling shares the delighted reaction of their players: “Some players were anxious at first, but after a few minutes they were able to focus on playing rugby,” he said.
“We have five men’s teams, one ladies team and 12 mini and youth sides, and they have all relaxed once they knew how safe and enjoyable it is, and the best thing is the absolute consistency of play across the pitch. Players have reported how the true nature of the PRO-gran infill leads to greater confidence in the surface, especially when kicking at goal, creating a reliable base for the standing foot, reducing the risk of injury and hopefully improving accuracy. There have been no problems with abrasion” PRO-gran was developed by Murfitts Industries to address growing concerns that that there may be health risks from playing on some synthetic pitches. Managing Director Mark Murfitt said: “We wanted people to enjoy participating in sport without worrying about the playing surface. After a year of research, development and a rigorous testing programme, PRO-gran exceeds the EU’s toughest toxicology and safety standards so it’s 100% safe for people and the environment. Not only that, but it provides the ultimate in playing experience too.” www.murfittsindustries.com

All models are designed and built in the UK, using galvanised steel frameworks and heavy-duty, PVC-coated fabric. With sizes and prices to suit all budgets, from the 3m wide freestanding ‘Thunder Dome’ to the 9m wide Container Canopy. John Houston of Britcover explains “Our structures are used across a wide range of industries including machinery hire companies, rail track maintenance companies, recycling centres, landscapers, car valeting, and much more”. Houston adds “It’s not just the great value which attracts customers but the speed at which they can be constructed”. A typical Thunder Dome structure taking only around a day to construct, and can be self-built or built by one of Britcover’s construction teams. Their Storm Trooper model is fully compliant with current building regulations, and is calculated to withstand the worst UK snow and wind loads. Both the Thunder Dome and the Storm Trooper structures can be bolted on to a concrete base or can be supplied with
pre-cast concrete floor beams to which they can be bolted – ideal where a suitable concrete base is not available. Britcover’s Container Canopies span two shipping containers, bolting to the top of the container thus eliminating the need for planning permission or a sound base to bolt on to. Keeping patios in their prime Roxil’s landscaping protection range not only keeps patios in their prime but also needs treatment to be undertaken less frequently.
a ‘locked-in’ biocide dramatically reduces biological growth, such as moss, lichen and algae growth. As a result, a Roxil treated patio or paved surface will be easier to clean and will not require cleaning as often as an untreated surface. The high-performance Roxil landscaping protection range from Safeguard Europe will keep patios looking good and algae-free, and protect outdoor wood while maintaining its natural aesthetic, for up to 10 years. www.roxil.com www.safguardeurope.com
Oxford United installs leading brand of artificial grass ArtificialGrass.com has installed a winning indoor surface in the home changing room at League 1 football club Oxford United. The UK supplier provided a mini pitch of inlaid grass flooring, creating a ‘virtual’ setting designed to boost team tactics on match days. The new mini pitch is thought to be the first of its kind in the English Football League. Covering an area of around five by 15 metres, the mini pitch installation was part of investment in the general refurbishment of Oxford United changing rooms during the pre-season period. Available exclusively through builders’ merchants, ArtificialGrass.com offers a range of products suitable for residential and commercial installation, including schools and play areas, providing a natural-looking, lush, green surface with all the benefits of real turf, without any upkeep. www.artificialgrass.com Hard cleaning is detrimental to patios in terms of wear – especially for aggregate-based paviors – and damage to joints, particularly where pointing may already be loose. Roxil Wood & Patio Cleaner allows for soft cleaning of patios, as its non-destructive and highly effective formula will remove dirt, moss and algae without resorting to powerspraying and acidic cleaning methods. A clean surface having been achieved, it then needs to be protected and has developed an innovative new protection cream. Roxil Patio Cream is a speciallyformulated deeply penetrating silicone cream emulsion that that protects patios and paved surfaces without changing their colour or texture. The product weatherproofs the surface of patios and paved surfaces for 10 years with a single coat application and

Remove graffiti and chewing gum All Oeliatec weed control machines kill weeds with 100% hot water by delivering an efficient low pressure treatment at temperatures of up to 120°C. This destroys the cellular structure of the weed to kill off the plant. The intense heat penetrates deep into the root system killing the plant from the leaf down to the root. It is effective with all broad leaf plants and grass along with moss and algae which can also be removed at the same time. With five models available, customers will not only be able to control weeds, moss and algae but also remove graffiti and chewing gum from streets, paths and walk ways. Leading groundscare machinery distributor Etesia UK has taken on the distribution for the Oeliatec in the UK and Ireland. www.oeliatec.co.uk

Taking measure ZIPLEVEL PRO-2000 enables one person, working alone, to quickly survey sites or set installation levels. Benefit from speed of set-up and ease of use when setting out and installing paving, decking, fencing, water features, steps, pathways and drainage. Check the depth of excavations; achieve perfectly level patios and terraces; work around two or three sides of a building without having to re-position the instrument. It is a high precision instrument that measures height differences and checks or transfer levels. In one set-up, it can transfer a level up to 30m in any direction from its Base, and can measure height differences to a precision of 2mm over a height of 12m, or an unprecedented 0.2mm over 1.2m. It does the calculations for you and displays the results digitally. It will work around corners and obstructions; in deep excavations; from room to room, floor to floor and from inside a building to outside. It is compact and light weight, easy to use and requires virtually no set-up. It can store up to 137 measurements that can be recalled later, and will work over unlimited heights and distances and around any obstacle - unlike laser and dumpy levels It is compact, lightweight, robust, easy to use and requires virtually no set-up. Use it also to measure structural deflection or to check and monitor buildings for subsidence. www.groundscare-products.co.uk
Perennial - a lifeline for the landscape industry During the festive season, please spare a thought for those people in our industry who need help.
Perennial is here for everyone working in or retired from all areas of the horticulture and landscaping professions when times get tough. We offer free and confidential advice and support to people facing a range of difficulties including injury, bereavement, illness, debt, disability and unemployment. Our support also extends to the families and continues for as long as it is needed.
George’s story Perennial helps people like George*, who had been forced to retire early from his gardening career due to ill health. He and his wife were living on benefits and their debts were mounting. They were put in touch with Perennial and the Caseworker identified and applied for several benefits they were entitled to. They were also awarded an on-going weekly payment, as well as receiving grants from other charities towards the cost of a mobility vehicle for George’s wife who was unable to leave the house. When George’s wife sadly passed away, Perennial was there to help him help sort out his finances. He received demands from the authorities for repayment of some of his benefit shortly after his wife’s death and was terribly distressed as he planned to spend his little savings on a
headstone for his wife’s grave. The Caseworker made an appeal and eventually won. George is now able to manage on his income and put a small amount of money aside. He is aware of Perennial’s lasting support and has finally managed to purchase the headstone for his wife’s grave that meant so much to him.

We rely on the support of the industry to continue to provide our lifeline services. There are many ways to get involved including becoming a Perennial Partner or simply making a donation. Oman Botanic Garden set to be world’s biggest The Oman Botanic Garden will be largest botanic garden in the world. Covering over 420 hectares of land, the large-scale installation will allow visitors to experience the entire flora and varied habitats of Oman – from the Northern Mountains to the Sabkha salt flats – in just a few hours. The garden will house a significant number of endemic and endangered species, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world, while two of the more sensitive habitats will be enclosed within ‘biomes’ to mimic the natural temperature, lighting and humidity of unique external environments. The site for Oman Botanic Gardens is one of the only few locations in the world where the ancient seabed remains visible following tectonic activity; these existing natural ridges and ravines have been used to design buildings and walkways for visitors.

Christmas days out Visitors to RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex this season will have the first glimpse of the new Winter Garden, with the key plantings now in place alongside specially-commissioned sculptures by David Watkinson before it is officially opened next winter. A new Winter Trail will highlight some of the choice winter specimens from around the garden, including Prunus maackii ‘Amber Beauty’ (Manchurian cherry) with its polished golden peeling bark and the deeply scented Viburnum bodnantense ‘Charles Lamont’, both in the Winter Garden. RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon will be the first of the four RHS Gardens to kick off the festive season with its Glow illuminations lighting the way from 17 November through to 6 January. The Holly Trail is a highlight of the festive season, showcasing the wonderful diversity of the genus Ilex with more than 150 varieties to find around the garden. Meanwhile, the Winter Sculpture Exhibition is a seasonal treat for art lovers until 18 February, and younger visitors will enjoy seeking out the artworks around the garden. In late winter, the newly-planted Rosewarne Daffodil Collection, formerly on display at RHS Garden Wisley, will begin to emerge as the cheery heralds of spring. In North Yorkshire, RHS Garden Harlow Carr is hosting its own spectacular light show for the first time this festive season. The Glow illuminations will run from 23 November to 30 December, bringing a touch of magic to the most northerly RHS Garden, while a series of events will get visitors into the festive spirit in the run-up to Christmas. From late autumn through to early spring, the self-guided Winter Walk takes in the highlights of the garden in all its ethereal winter glory, and from mid-February 5000 irises planted to mark the Winter Walk’s tenth anniversary last year will burst into flower. Concurrent exhibitions running until 25 February examine the history of inspirational Women in Horticulture, including Gertrude Jekyll and Constance Spry, and the nation’s fascination with Japanese gardens, highlighting the restoration of the 1920s Japanese-style garden at nearby Valley Gardens. RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey demonstrates that winter can be just as full of interest as any other season, with the paved Winter Walk around Seven Acres exploring the fiery stems, delicate winter blooms and vibrant foliage that bring the colder months to life. On selected dates in December, families can combine a visit to Santa and Mrs Claus with a chance to see the Christmas Glow installations by Jigantics,
showing the garden in a whole new light every day from 1 December until 3 January. In the New Year, no visit to Wisley is complete without stopping by the Alpine Display House, a riot of colour in the early months as many of its specimens come to their best. Then from 13 January to 4 March, thousands of exotic butterflies will take wing to delight visitors seeking refuge from the cold amongst the tropical plants inside the Glasshouse. www.rhs.org.uk/gardenswhatson

LIGHTING
Choosing the right garden light By Martin Bennett The best way to select the most suitable garden lighting is in some ways the same as choosing a new car. First, determine the main vehicle requirement such as a family car, a 4x4 for rural environments or perhaps a fast sports car, then choose the most attractive model from a reputable maker within the budget available.
For lighting, first decide what is required; if highlighting smaller to mid-size features such as trees, statues or areas of planting, then adjustable, spike mounted spot lights are understandably the best option. The most durable spike lights are made from Solid Brass or Marine Grade Stainless Steel. Designers and Landscapers favour these hard-wearing materials due to their reliability, low maintenance and indeed their pleasing aesthetic. It’s a good idea to use designs that accommodate replaceable LED bulbs rather than built-in LEDs. This
84
www.landscapermagazine.com
way, factors such as light output and colour temperature such as warm or bright daylight white can be chosen to a client’s satisfaction. Remember when considering brightness, it’s the lumens that count. The best bulbs have 80 plus lumens per watt. It’s always important to light pathways for safety reasons. Lights that perform this straightforward and expected function can also be an impressive garden feature in their own right. The most attractive lights are those that blend in with the garden environment. ‘Spreadlights’ crafted from Brass in a rustic bronze finish meet both criteria. Functional and elegant, all light is directed downwards, ‘spreading’ a pool of light with no light pollution. A recent innovation from Lumena, involves lights mounted in Radiata pine sleepers or posts, for a fantastically durable wooden bollard light with a beautifully rustic character. The ‘Radiata’ Pine is sourced from South Africa where the dry weather increases its density resulting in low splitting properties. The wood is treated and kiln dried to give a guaranteed life of up to 15 years. Similar Pine is used in children’s playgrounds and nature reserves. Solid Brass lights are incorporated into machined orifices in the timber posts to create a naturally unique path light. Radiata are available in two heights, designed for 300mm - 400mm secure in-ground mounting. A professional garden designer can advise on installation spacing and the best LED bulbs to be used. They can be used on either 12v or 240v lighting systems. Martin Bennett is the founder of Lumena Lights. www.lumenalights.com

THE
LANDSCAPER
By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe
Dear Fans I just want to put something on the record. I love my little sister. Not one jot of sibling rivalry has ever surfaced between us. It was entirely her own business not to take my advice and cut down on her consumption of DeLafée of Switzerland’s Gold Chocolate which has now resulted in her having what’s most gently described as a fuller figure. She also claimed to be a fully paid up member of the Jeremy Corbin fan club - I have seen You Tube evidence of her sitting on a hunky chap’s shoulder (he would have to be fairly strong) chanting “ooh Jeremy” at Glastonbury. So imagine my surprise when she declared she had landed a job at right wing Brexit supporting newspaper The Daily Mail. I managed to get her some work experience here after she got her piss poor degree in politics and media studies. She did not last long. Four days to be precise. I’m really delighted that she will be getting a special discount on the complete Michael Kors range of handbags. Our Dear Leader went missing last week, nobody knew his whereabouts, even junior was at a loss. There has been a bit of friction between the two of them as the youthful one refuses to have a haircut. In my opinion he has every right to develop the ‘My Little Pony’ hairstyle as he was once a pop idle. On Friday the leader returned revealing he had been in Prague for a few days ‘on business’ and

called a meeting. The subject of the Perennial Calendar featured on this page was raised. It was during this discussion that I heard something that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life - it was suggested that all the staff of The Landscaper should get their kit off for a 2019 calendar. It’s not going to happen - you can all relax. The rest of the meeting was about our office party - It’s also not going to happen due to an economy drive, or to be more accurate, villas in the winter sun have to be paid for. Well I hope you have enjoyed what is now the most read column of the magazine and indeed I’m grateful for all your emails. Have a good Christmas and don’t get into trouble. tabitha@landscapermagazine.com
