The four with the most votes took to the challenge like professionals, and the event video can be viewed at: https://youtu.be/RDu_JaKfEcE The Christmas video has been eagerly anticipated within the landscaping industry. One member of the final four is particularly entertaining, and dug deep for the stamina to complete his ‘courses’. It’s a much-watch video for some light Christmas relief. Managing Director Rachel Kay comments: “Green-tech is renowned as the leading supplier in the landscape industry, and our people are among the best. We are concerned that ITV might try to poach presenter Roger McGivern, but he’s assured us that the bright lights of television can’t compare with the delight he gets from selling tree stakes, soil and wildflower seeds. Our video has been incredibly well received and reiterates that there is no one else like us in the industry, and we’ll always go the extra mile to see our customers smile!” www.green-tech.co.uk

Picking Up Award
The new generation Isuzu D-Max (launched in 2017) has been awarded What Van? Pick-Up of The Year for 2018, with the title praising both its substance and style. Judges were impressed by the economy and refinement of the new 164 PS turbo diesel engine, a step up from the previous model that improves performance and builds upon the Isuzu D-Max’s workhorse character. Retaining the 3.5 tonne towing capacity and over 1 tonne payload, the new generation Isuzu D-Max was praised for providing a quieter, more economical driving experience. The new 1.9L turbo engine also meets Euro 6 standards without the need for the addition of AdBlue, unlike most of the Isuzu D-Max’s competitors. The breadth of the Isuzu D-Max range also impressed judges, with single, extended and double-cab formats available, as well as a wide choice of trim levels. Coupled with the five-year/125,000-mile warranty package and five
years’ roadside assistance (in the UK & Europe), the D-MAX proved it was built for the professionals who use it. What Van? Editor and Judge James Dallas said of the win: “Looking for a no-nonsense workhorse that is at home on a farm or building site, yet is not short of creature comforts? Then look no further. Isuzu’s rugged and recently revised D-Max 1.0-tonne payload pick-up matches that description nicely and is a worthy winner of our Pick-up of the Year award for 2018. It is without doubt an exemplary package that is well worth investigating.” Isuzu UK Managing Director William Brown commented: “The award for the new generation Isuzu D-Max is a testimony to the great product which our customers already love and trust. Isuzu is proud to make reliable and quality vehicles for the professionals that need them and this award highlights the Isuzu truly is a step above the rest.” www.isuzu.co.uk
Irrigation best practice at Trentham Golf Club includes the recent installation of a new irrigation system. Ed Stant, course manager at the golf club based near Stoke-on-Trent, says that recent changes to his irrigation management are paying dividends: “Two years ago we had a completely new irrigation system installed. We opted for the intuitive Toro Lynx control system with 170 Infinity series greens, approaches and surrounds sprinklers. Having the right technology greatly aids professional irrigation management.” Reesink Turfcare is the exclusive distributor in the UK and Ireland for Toro professional turfcare machinery and irrigation products for the golf, sport and amenity sectors. reesinkturfcare.co.uk

Kick Start
Mowing Along
Eddie Mills, Course Manager at Edgbaston Golf Club in Birmingham, believes his fully integrated iTurf programme has helped maintain the particularly stubborn clay-based greens to an exceptional standard. Established in 1896, Edgbaston Golf Club’s 18-hole course was designed by H.S. Colt. It includes an ornamental lake, and plays through mature and extensive woodland with small greens and tight fairways. Faced with major irrigation and drainage work in his first year as Course Manager, Eddie embarked on the ICL iTurf programme. Although faced with problematic soil temperatures, Eddie believes the greens are in as good a condition as they have ever been, due in part to an early granular application of Greenmaster Pro-Lite Cold Start 11-5-5+8Fe: “Six weeks after one application of Cold Start, we apply a Sierraform GT Spring Starter 16-0-16+Fe+Mn. In further maintaining the greens, we use SeaMax. We apply on the greens every month, which is supported by a fortnightly application of Primo Maxx. This has been essential, especially with the amount of growth.” He adds: “We also apply Primo Maxx on the tees, approaches and surrounds, and it has really ‘thickened’ those areas up – they don’t seem to burn off as much now when the weather gets hot. We have also seen strong rooting from using Primo Maxx.” On Edgbaston’s tees, Eddie highlighted Sierrablen 27-5-5+Fe (8-9 mths) as his stand-out performer: “We use Sierrablen on the tees in March or April. The sward is always really strong because it sits there as a base feed.” For the past fourteen years, Eddie has worked closely with ICL’s Emma Kilby: “It is great to have someone that you can trust, and is not just here to sell you products for the sake of it. Together we develop the programme, and Emma will go out and regularly look at the course, look at the products we have used, assess how things are, and there is a constant stream of information between us. I use ICL products because we are guaranteed quality, and the customer service just adds to the overall package.” www.icl-sf.co.uk
Countrywide Grounds Maintenance has invested in the versatility of a Toro LT-F3000 triple flail mower. This is a first-time Toro purchase for Countrywide Grounds Maintenance franchise owner Andrew Gilliar. He says: “I’ve owned and operated mowers similar to this one for over 30 years, so there’s not many models in the market I don’t know, but it’s the first time I’ve demo’d the Toro LT-F3000. During the demonstration, I was amazed by the versatility of the machine. With a diverse client list ranging from schools and councils to commercial estates, the LT-F3000 is designed to meet our current business needs. We needed a machine versatile enough to deliver a consistently good cut to sites of all shapes and sizes, regardless of grass type, grass length or weather conditions. This is what you get from the LT-F3000. “It can deliver a 22-25mm cut on school playing fields and sports facilities, and leave a nice finish with stripes. At the same time, the height of cut can be adjusted to suit longer rough-cut grass sites, such as council verges, industrial estates, or nature pathways. The latter can be cut on a cycle of 16 weeks, but the LT-F3000 will still cut through this grass easily and leave a good finish.” With the grounds of over 104 schools across Suffolk and Essex to maintain, the machines in Andrew’s fleet must be able to keep up. The LT-F3000 is in operation eight hours a day, five or six days a week.
Andrew continues: “We have a team of three using the triple flail, and they absolutely love it. It’s comfortable and easy to maintain, thanks to accessible service points.” When it comes to customer experience, Andrew says: “We haven’t come into contact with the aftersales service team yet as we’ve had no problems. Considering how quick and easy it was to order spare parts, plus the support we’ve had from Danny Lake [Reesink sales representative], I’m sure that Reesink would be there to help us should we ever need it.” The company has another LT-F3000 on order. www.reesinkturfcare.co.uk

Garden Aspiration The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) will team up at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2018 (2-8 July) to jointly fund a feature show garden to promote and celebrate the skills of landscape contractors. The joint initiative replaces (and will build on what has been achieved) the Young Landscape Contractor Competition, held for the last two years at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park, which involved trainee Landscapers and Planting Designers working together on a show feature. RHS Director General Sue Biggs, said: “The RHS cares very much about promoting and recognising the skills of Landscapers, which is why we introduced the Young Landscaper Competition at Tatton two years ago, as part of our Horticulture Matters campaign. However, the competition struggled to attract applicants, because it seems young landscapers have been unable to be released from work or their own in-house training programmes. “For some time, we have been discussing with BALI other ways that we can support and promote Young Landscapers at our
RHS Shows, so I am very excited to announce our new plan for a feature garden at RHS Hampton next year, and look forward to sharing more details in 2018.” BALI’s Chief Executive, Wayne Grills, commented on the joint announcement: “I am delighted to confirm that BALI has reached an agreement to jointly fund a feature show garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show next July with the RHS, to continue the efforts of what has been achieved over the last two years at Tatton. “BALI has an obligation to its members, and the industry, to continue to promote, support and inspire our younger generation of landscape contractors as well as garden designers, and this is a great way of achieving this through BALI’s GoLandscape initiative and alongside the RHS. I am pleased to see that we will continue to fly the flag for promoting the benefits of working in our industry. This announcement will now grant access for young talent to design and build a show garden that is supported by the GoLandscape brand, our Ambassadors, the RHS and the wider industry. BALI and the RHS will provide further announcements detailing how designer and landscaping students/apprentices can get involved with the project in the New Year.” www.rhs.org.uk/hamptoncourt

Record Attendance
The 72nd SALTEX exhibition recorded attendance of 8909, its highest total since moving to the NEC, Birmingham. “An excellent show in 2017,” said Jeremy Hoyle, director at Earlsmere. “Enquiries on the stand were up 15% on last year, and we gained a number of significant leads with sports turf professionals, schools and colleges featuring heavily within our stand attendee list.” Nathan George, contracts manager for MJ Abbott, said: “Having the opportunity to speak to potential new customers, as well as current customers, is invaluable when continuing growth into a new market, and that is why such an emphasis is placed on attending shows, with the large number of attendees and decision makers a particular highlight for the company at this year’s SALTEX.” “We were really impressed with the amount of customers visiting our stand this year, and SALTEX TV was perfect for promoting a new product,” said Holly Jones, marketing manager for Reesink Turfcare. After a 16-year absence from SALTEX, LWS Irrigation returned this year, and director Simon Edginton said: “We were delighted with the huge amount of leads we received from a wide sector of the industry including football, golf, cricket and bowls facilities. The large number of visitors created a great atmosphere, and we caught up with many existing customers and industry colleagues to share news and developments. We certainly won’t be waiting so long to exhibit again.” Price Turfcare is a newly established business founded
by Ransomes Jacobsen’s former sales director, Rupert Price. He commented: “Our first visit to SALTEX has been a very positive experience. One of our aims was to look for new dealer partners and this worked well.” With more than 300 exhibitors showcasing their products and services, SALTEX visitors were treated to an impressive line-up of world-class innovation. “There are so many fantastic products and it’s nice to be able to see them and have a good close-up look before you make any purchases,” commented Stuart Kerrison, Essex CCC head groundsman. Hannah Richards, gardener for the National Trust, said: “We are always looking for new ways to do things, new products and new machines, and SALTEX gives us this opportunity.” Chris Wood, pitches consultant at England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), suggested that SALTEX is a place where some of the greatest industry ideas are born: “The value of a show like this is being able to talk to colleagues and share ideas. It’s a place to challenge exhibitors about new technology, and that’s how new innovation comes about. I’ve been in this business for 50 years, and the opportunities for young groundsmen now, compared to when I first started, are profound.” Learning LIVE, SALTEX’s education programme, featured more than 100 high-profile speakers and 26 hours of free seminars. SALTEX 2018 will be at the NEC, Birmingham on 31 October and 1 November. www.iogsaltex.com

New Identity Spearhead Machinery will unveil its new-look brand identity at LAMMA 2018. Changes to the logo and machinery colour scheme coincide with the launch of new models, including a revamped TWIGA hedge-cutter series, available from January.
Rebecca King, Marketing Manager at Spearhead, comments: “The TWIGA range will feature a simpler naming convention, with a letter and number configuration throughout each series; the letter denoting either a Standard, Forward Reach or Telescopic arm, and a number giving the specified machine reach.” Machines on display at the Peterborough event include: new TWIGA Classic S55 Standard Arm, 5.5 metre reach; new TWIGA Mid T65 Telescopic Arm, 6.5 metre reach; and new TWIGA Flex S67 Standard Arm, 6.7 metre reach. Spearhead will also exhibit rotary mower models, including the classic Multicut 460 and the compact, robust, Multicut 300, and revolutionary Stubble Master 500 rotary mulcher. These versatile rotary mowers build on a heritage of more than 25 years of design, development and innovation, with high-lift blade featured across all models, and cutting systems and arrangements for grass, stubble and scrub land maintenance. Also at LAMMA will be the Stubble Master 500, with new livery and industry-leading features designed to make the cropping cycle more efficient and cost effective. The Stubble Master’s blade system is capable of mulching leftover stubble into small debris particles, aiding faster decomposition into the soil through the encouragement of worm activity. The mulched debris can also give protection to the soil surface. These combined actions ultimately result in an overall improvement to the soil structure. Chelsea 2018 Hillier has announced details of its 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden. “STIHL Inspiration” by Hillier will take on a more rustic theme than previously featured in Hillier’s exhibits with corten steel throughout, and orange and blue flowering plants will add warmth alongside the traditional feature of Hillier’s mature trees. Hillier holds the record for the most consecutive Chelsea gold medals and hopes the 2018 show will see it receiving its 73rd. Keen to boost interaction with the exhibit, Sarah Eberle, who is the lead designer for Hillier for the third year running, has deliberately created a walkway through the garden that will provide opportunities for greater interaction with all elements of the exhibit. Demonstrating the broader range of what is on offer
within the Hillier Garden Centres including pots, tools and accessories, the garden will be broken down into a number of smaller themed sections where visitors can take direct inspiration for their own gardens. This year, STIHL will be a sponsor of the Hillier garden. The theme of the 2018 garden is inspiration and the design will see the two companies uniting to encapsulate the “inspiring future generations” ethos of Hillier which has run through the company since its formation over 150 years ago. “We are delighted to have STIHL on board as a sponsor this year. Like Hillier, it is a heritage family owned company, and we share the same core values about inspiring gardeners through innovation”, commented George Hillier, who is one of the fifth generation of Hillier family members to be involved in the business. www.hillier.co.uk

Maintenance Solutions
When tool hire company Artisan Hire Centre was looking to upgrade one of its incumbent 7.5 tonne rigids, the Wiltshire-based business replaced it with two brand new 7.5 tonne Isuzu rigids to accommodate growth in customer deliveries requiring greater payloads.
Dennis and SISIS will show a range of market-leading turf maintenance equipment at the 2018 Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Conference and Exhibition, January 16-19 in Fort Worth, Texas. Dennis will showcase its G860 dedicated cylinder mower, with a range of interchangeable cassettes, (including scarifiers, verticutters, brushes, spikers, slitters and six- or eight-bladed cutting cylinders) and the newly launched Spring Tine Rake, which has 42 springs with 12mm spacings that can be used for the removal of dead turf matter, cleaning the surface and helping to stand grasses up. All cassettes can be changed easily without tools. Visitors to the Dennis and SISIS stand will see the SISIS Javelin Aer-Aid 1500 tractor-mounted vertical action aerator, which injects air directly into the root zone speeding up the aeration process, moving air uniformly throughout the root zone for complete aeration and not just where the tines have penetrated the surface. Those operating the Javelin Aer-Aid have the flexibility to alternate tines for other operations such as hollow coring prior to top dressing. Other benefits include a fast forward speed for excellent productivity, minimal maintenance and a smooth and quiet operation.
Having previously run four Isuzu NKR 3.5 tonne rigids in its 30-strong commercial vehicle fleet, Artisan Hire Centre was aware of the payload and reliability benefits of the Isuzu chassis. For this latest vehicle acquisition, Artisan specified two new Isuzu Forward N75.190 rigids, both fitted with beavertail plant bodies, built by AG Bracey Ltd, Bristol, and with rear-cab-mounted winches. Isuzu Truck dealer Greenmeadow Commercial Services supplied the vehicles, and the new trucks are expected to have a working life of four years, covering 30,000 miles per annum. “Our previous successful experience of running Isuzus meant we were more than happy to specify the Isuzu marque again for this new vehicle acquisition programme,” said Chris Comers, managing director, Artisan Hire Centre. Formed in September 2000, Artisan Hire Centre has its head office in Melksham, Wiltshire and operates eight depots covering the area from Oxford in the North to Basingstoke in the South and Bristol in the West. “Artisan Hire Centre has established a well-deserved reputation over the past 17 years, and we are extremely pleased to be part of its recent growth, with the supply of two new Isuzu 7.5tonners into its delivery fleet,” said Pete Murphy, managing director, Isuzu Truck UK. “Isuzu Truck, with its 7.5 tonne and 3.5tonne rigids, has established a unique niche in the building and construction industry here in the UK, and we are sure that Artisan will benefit from many good years of service from these recent new Isuzus.” www.isuzutruck.co.uk

Glyphosate statement “Rigby Taylor is delighted the EU has renewed the licence for glyphosate,” says Peter Corbett, the company’s Chemicals Product Manager. “The loss of this important active would have cost local authorities many hundreds of millions of pounds to replace with alternative means of vegetation control. The industry now needs to take on board the importance of using this active ingredient correctly and in a sustainable manner. Rigby Taylor is working on a product stewardship package for glyphosate, which will include all the elements of best practice. The package will include advice and recommendations for managers, operators and other end users on how to use it correctly. There is also a need to educate the general public on its safety profile. We expect the UK authorities to re-affirm product labels in the next few months and Rigby Taylor will include these in the stewardship package. A key element to ensuring we can continue to have glyphosate
as a cost-effective management tool for vegetation management will be to use it in a programme with other products to achieve the desired outcome. Rigby Taylor will also address this issue in its forthcoming stewardship programme.” Rigby Taylor’s Chemicals Product Manager Peter Corbett says the company will be announcing a product stewardship package for glyphosate, which will include all the elements of best practice. www.rigbytaylor.com

Record and Trace Synthetic Turf Maintenance specialists, Replay, has launched PitchPassport® 365, which is set to revolutionise the recording and traceability of synthetic turf maintenance and become the benchmark for the industry and beyond. PitchPassport® 365 is designed to provide full integration between the manufacturer, installer, maintainer and
the facility, collating historical, current and predictive maintenance information for all types of synthetic surfaces. Featuring online and offline functionality, all pertinent information and reports relating to the facility can be reported as the maintenance visit is taking place utilising live-stream monitoring technology. The data can then be accessed securely, anywhere at anytime from your inbox or dedicated client portal app. Key features include the usage calculator and heat
mapping technology, which uses an embedded algorithm to produce a dedicated map of the pitch, showing the high-wear areas of the facility in question. The information gathered by the tool can then be used in-house or by the external maintainer to ensure effective maintenance efforts. It can also be used to diagnose and schedule maintenance to resolve potential issues before they become major concerns. Through the app, the facility can view scheduled maintenance visits using the calendar function, including a thorough description of the work (to be) carried out, and any job notes specific to the surface. The maintainer can then edit the job live from the site, submitting photos, documents or notes from their visit creating a comprehensive maintenance report. Another feature, ReplayRescue, gives the operator the ability to report any urgent matters instantly using a red or amber alert to highlight the need for further action. Replay Managing Director and brainchild of PitchPassport® 365 Garry Martin said: “At Replay, we pride ourselves on being forward-thinking and always striving for that next tool and technique to take the synthetic turf maintenance industry to the next level. With PitchPassport® 365, we now have a tool that not only streamlines our operations, but offers tracking and traceability of works that has never previously been available. This enhances health, safety and asset protection and removes grey areas and burden of proof. Using the metrics obtained from the many features of PitchPassport® 365, Replay and the industry as a whole can use the information to enhance future offerings.” www.replaymaintenance.co.uk

The jury rated the Amarok as the epitome of ‘work hard, play hard’, a core element of the pick-up segment, and described the Amarok as a ‘top pedigree workhorse’. The clear design, the fantastic feel and the finish, in short the workmanship, were specifically cited by the jury as being key factors in their decision. The size of the double cab with room for five people, the benchmark in the segment, also impressed with its modern design. Leading designers from the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) predict the hot new trends in garden design for 2018, including plantings, materials and design styles Garden by Cassandra Crouch
OUTDOOR LIVING According to award-winning garden designer John Wyer, outdoor structures are set to be big in 2018. ‘Plug and Play’ pergolas, with integrated drainage, lighting and heating will be the must-have garden feature, while outdoor kitchens will continue to grow in popularity, with dedicated spaces for cooking, eating and entertaining becoming a central focus. ASYMMETRY It’s all about asymmetry in 2018. Prepare to see a contemporary update on the classic crazy paving with large-scale natural indigenous stone, according to Cassandra Crouch. Gardens will feel less structured, as geometric lines

and hard surfaces are softened by planting, and edges are broken down to create the feeling of a garden that has been there for years. ECOLOGICAL GARDENS Designer James Scott believes that gardens designed to benefit the environment and encourage wildlife will also be big in 2018, with native plants and locally sourced materials becoming increasingly popular. Similarly, as interest in producing our own food continues to grow, we will see a trend towards edible planting with greenhouses making a comeback. MATERIALS COPPER Copper, both as a material and colour, will make a big impact in 2018, according to Paul Hensey. Weathering to a beautiful

bluish-green patina, hard landscaping in copper can provide a wonderful sense of warmth to planting and a contrast to surrounding gravel, stone or wood. Where a perpetual copper colour is preferred, copper-effect stainless steels will be a popular alternative. Cassandra Crouch believes there will be a move away from shiny stainless steel finishes, with a natural weathered patina becoming popular. WOOD-EFFECT TILES Increasingly popular in interior design, wood-effect porcelain tiles look set to become a trend in garden design, according to designer John Wyer; he first used them two

TEXTURED PAVING Hand-made bricks and textured paving blocks will be big in 2018, believes designer Jane Finlay. The blocks’ irregularities and imperfections bring a natural element to small urban gardens; end-grain oak blocks, replicating original wooden cobbles (such as seen in historic settings like Blenheim Palace), are also predicted to be popular.
years ago on his award-winning garden at the RHS Chelsea flower show. Hard-wearing, scratch, stain and heat-resistant, they can be used for both flooring and cladding. LIMESTONE After taking centre stage in James Basson’s award-winning garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year, limestone is set to make a return to the domestic garden, with the introduction of harder-wearing mid-toned stones rather than the bright white varieties of a few years ago, reflecting the natural, warm colour palettes popular in interior design. Adolfo Harrison also predicts a trend towards mixing
PLANTING SHRUBS It’s all about shrubs this year, say designers from the Society of Garden Designers. We’ll be moving away from naturalistic perennials and grasses to provide accent and structure to the garden according to Cassandra Crouch, while interest in exotic and unusual specimens will be particularly prevalent, opines John Wyer. Euonymus oxyphyllus, an elegant, slowgrowing shrub from Korea is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its rich, emerald green leaves that turn to shades of yellow, bronze and red in the autumn, and produce a spectacular show of colour in the summer from its cherrylike fruits.

LOW-LEVEL WOODLAND PLANTS Low level woodland-style planting that mixes ferns, mosses, anemones and tufted grasses is something we can expect to see more of in 2018, according to designer Adolfo Harrison. It’s a trend seen at the NEO Bankside development opposite London’s Tate Modern, and works well in tricky, shaded city gardens. ARCHITECTURAL PLANTS Sharp architectural planting contrasting with softer organic hard finishes will also be popular, believes Jane Finlay, adding that such plantings can sometimes be mixed with country-style planting to blend sharper elements together. Adolfo Harrison believes that plants such as the Sabal minor (dwarf palmetto) or Chamaerops humilis (dwarf fan palm) will be popular alongside Tetrapanax papyrifera ‘Rex’, with
the latter’s height and 2ft palmate leaves meaning it can transform even the most humble planting around it in to something far more exotic. The Society of Garden Designers is the only professional association for garden designers in the UK, and has a Find A Designer search facility on its website: www.sgd.org.uk. It is active nationally and internationally, promoting its aims through its journal, workshops, seminars, conferences and annual SGD Awards scheme.

Finding the right person at the right time Grafter is a new free digital solution for business to rapidly engage flexible workers. In the case of businesses seeking temporary workers – the service is completely free for businesses to find and engage workers
The concept was conceived by Tom Cape in 2016 and co-founded with Richard Knight in June 2017. Grafter has already attracted over 7,000 registered users prior to its official launch date and achieved 156% overfunding on crowd-funding platform, Crowdcube in Autumn 2017. With a range of skills and experience in technology, digital startups, business development and finance, the Founders, Tom and Richard share a passion for building and property development which in turn helped shape their insights for the Grafter business. Tom Cape formed the Grafter idea when he searched to find people to shift concrete on a small building project. To his great frustration, he couldn’t find workers or services to fulfill the short term job - despite knowing there were local people out there. As an experience shared by both cofounders, they resolved to tackle the problem together. Through further research, it became apparent that a vast many business sectors including farming and building required a faster route to find non-specialist workers. Coupled with the fact that flexible working has become a positive choice for millions of people - from millenials to the retired - the Grafter business was born. Grafter is designed for business seeking flexible or part time local workers in building/construction, farming, landscaping, delivery, warehousing, leisure, events and factory/light industry and self employed workers seeking flexible or part time work that doesn’t demand qualified skills or past experience. As Tom Cape explains, Grafter is fit for the demanding needs of business and workers both now and the future. “We recognise the way people want to work and the type of work available is changing rapidly. Grafter is the first free digital service that engages all types of flexible workers with local business in just a few steps – making the process of finding work and workers, swift, cost-effective and trustworthy too”.

Productive Planting Scheme The largest tree-planting scheme in England (for more than 25 years) will have 600,000+ trees planted on a site at Doddington North Moor in Northumberland. The decision was announced the day after Andy Howard, project manager for Doddington, described his long battle to gain approval at a major land use conference at Westminster, organised by Confor. Mr Howard said: “I’m delighted to have secured the go ahead for the project at Doddington North. Well-designed new forests are fantastic assets for local people and wider society. Hopefully, us starting to plant trees at Doddington North, and the lessons learned from the application process, will encourage others to take that important step. I’d like to acknowledge the valuable support of the local population, Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP, and the unstinting positive backing from Confor. I’m also grateful to the Natural England and Forestry Commission staff at local level who ultimately found a way for us to some together to find a solution.” Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor, welcomed the ‘fantastic news’, which comes just two weeks after approval of the Lowther Estate planting scheme, south of Penrith in Cumbria. Lowther will see more than 210,000 trees planted on a 170-hecatre site, with 120 hectares of productive conifer species and most of the remainder productive broadleaf species. The Doddington site, near Wooler, is 354 hectares, with 268 hectares to be planted: 42 per cent conifers (the vast majority Sitka spruce), 20 per cent native broadleaf, and 13 per cent mixed Scots pine and native broadleaf. Of the remaining 25 per cent, 10 per cent is open ground, and 15 per cent managed priority habitat. Mr Goodall said: “This is fantastic news for the industry and testament to Andy Howard’s dogged determination to take on and change a poor system that puts rigid process ahead of pragmatism and public benefit. As he said at the conference, Doddington has broken the mould and should lead to a more workable approach to modern, welldesigned productive planting schemes – the door has been opened for others with high quality planting schemes to walk through. I’m really pleased that Andy highlighted the importance of the Woodland Creation Planning Grant at the start of the Doddington journey. Confor proposed the WCPG as a means to de-risk the early application process and Rory Stewart announced funding for the grant at our event in London two years ago.” One of the major battles to get approval was the designation of the planting site as priority habitat. Andy

Howard argued that the site had become overgrown with rhododendron, bracken and gorse and said the main danger was doing nothing. “Mother Nature does not work to civil service procedures,” he told the conference. Under the Doddington planting proposal, the amount of priority habitat on the site will increase by almost 70 per cent due to enhanced management. Mr Howard told the Westminster conference – Towards A Common Countryside Policy – that early engagement with the public, and taking time to explain the scheme to people, had been crucial. The local population had been hugely supportive, he said, and had helped to keep him going at times when he thought about giving up. “Doddington has hopefully broken the mould and can help us start to move away from the ridiculous position where you have to prove that planting trees is not a bad thing,” he said. “You have to be prepared to challenge the ‘Defra family’ and their understanding, you have to plan very carefully, talk to local people at a very early stage and adhere closely to the UK Forest Standard. In the end, Doddington has proved that positive action gets results.” Richard Greenhous, Director of Forest Services for Forestry Commission England (FCE), admitted at the conference that lessons had been learned by FCE during the Doddington process, especially around handling largescale productive planting applications, because expertise had been lost as the focus shifted to smaller-scale planting over the past 25 years. Dr Thérèse Coffey, the Defra minister responsible for forestry, urged the private sector to bring forward more large-scale productive planting schemes. She also repeated her concerns that first-time applications had to be of a higher standard, and challenged the industry to take up more of the money available from Government, especially through the Woodland Carbon Fund. Dr Coffey said a number of changes to the grants system had been made to make the process quicker and simpler. www.confor.org.uk

Brick and Paver Wienerberger, UK manufacturer of wall, roof and landscaping innovations, has launched a complete brick slip and paver slip solution, and a new website to showcase the offer.
Brick slips have been a trend in the UK for some time, for both internal and external use, and make it possible to achieve a range of styles from traditional to ultra-modern. Natural clay paver slips are an increasingly popular flooring solution to add character to internal environments as designers look to ‘bring the outside in’. Wienerberger’s new brick and paver slips solutions include different options of colours, sizes and textures. To support the launch, Wienerberger has developed an online platform to showcase the offering, and provide some inspiration to designers. The tool provides access to interactive functions, including viewing the slips in residential and commercial settings, and testing aesthetic combinations of how the brick and paver slips may work with their surrounding environments as well as in contrast with each other. This allows architects and designers to experiment during the design stages of a project. Richard Brown, Category Manager – Wall at Wienerberger commented: “We are very excited to launch our new brick and paver slips offering. We see the use of slips as a growing market that offers a great deal of creative potential for architects and designers. Our market-leading range means we are able to provide something to suit every design taste. We are also very pleased with our new online tool, designed to demonstrate how beautiful brick and paver slips can look both in domestic and non-domestic settings. I would encourage anyone considering designing a project using slips to visit the site and have some fun selecting different slip options in a range of environments to see how the different combinations work together.” www.wienerberger.co.uk

Timber Fence Alternative
Hardware Options
Wood plastic specialists, Composite Prime, has developed and launched HD Fence, a contemporary, durable solution for residential gardens and commercial boundaries.
TIMco has launched a new hardware range under the brand TAURUS, which is the company’s first venture into fence and gate hardware, and includes hinges, gate catches, bolts, hasps, staples, chains and fence accessories. TAURUS packaging options include bulk and bags, with new labelling and clear product information, including the corrosion rating and fitting instructions for the end user. TIMco has strategised and developed the merchandising around the new range with bespoke TAURUS stands for merchants, which are branded to assist the end user with product selection. The range and merchandising stands were put together by Paul White, Ironmongery Products Manager at TIMco, who comments: “We’ve taken a lot of time and consideration over the launch of our new TAURUS range to ensure the merchandising reflects the quality of the products within this range and is clearly identifiable to the end user in stores. We are ecstatic with the quality of the final products and branded merchandising stands.”
Using a unique composite material that combines FSC® 100% certified hardwood timber and recycled plastic, the product offers a much-needed alternative to timber fencing, renowned for breaking and becoming loose in the wind. The composite material is more durable and lowmaintenance than its timber counterpart, ensuring the fencing boards are anti-rot, sturdy and do not require painting or preservation treatments. Each board slots seamlessly into a multi-directional post and the easy-to-install solution also has a versatile retrofit option for concrete posts. The concrete post adapter allows HD Fence boards to slot between existing posts, saving time and money digging out and removing old concrete posts. Should a board need to be replaced it can be done so easily without replacing the entire panel, which cannot be achieved when working with timber fencing. Charles Taylor, sales director at Composite Prime, said: “We’re pleased to bring HD Fence to the market. Unlike timber fencing, if a board is broken the entire panel does not need to be replaced, as each six-foot panel is made up of nine boards. For such a sturdy product, the boards are lightweight, easy to handle and simple to install. It’s our aim to be at the forefront of composite technology within the garden product sector and our fencing goes a long way in ticking these boxes.” HD Fence is available in a selection of colour options offering a natural yet contemporary look for outdoor living, with no need to paint or treat the fence. The specialist’s full range includes decking, fencing and garden products, which can be purchased from a number of distributors across the UK. www.composite-prime.com

GREEN ROOFS
Green roof makes a splash in Cannon Hill
Maggie explains: “When using larger herbs like Rosemary and Lavender, it is particularly important they have a full 150mm depth substrate that will anchor their fuller structure and support their roots. With the correct support and careful installation, green roofs can also facilitate the growth of drought-tolerant Mediterranean herbs that need very sharp drainage.”
Green roofs for English winery
A residential property in London which recently added an extension to house a swimming pool and changing rooms has made its roof space more appealing by creating a lavender and mixed herb green roof. The project at Cannon Hill was designed and installed by Wild About Roofs, who specialise in supplying and installing an innovative range of herb and wildflower roofs. They commissioned Boningale GreenSky to provide a variety of lavender, rosemary and thyme plants for the new pool house’s flat roof. Unlike many commercial wildflower roofs, these larger plants were supplied as small pots to provide instant impact for a highly visible site. The end result is stunning and provides the home owners with a visually appealing outlook, as the pool house is overlooked by the main house. It also makes a positive impact on local biodiversity because for years to come, as the green roof flourishes it will provide a valuable food source for pollinators. Maggie Fennell, Head of Boningale GreenSky, said; “Green or living roofs are becoming more and more popular in domestic residential settings, especially in large towns and cities because of the inherent benefits they provide. And just like the example here at Cannon Hill, they also make the landscape a lot prettier, while being good for the environment. The mix of herbs and lavender specified on this project has provided a truly stunning and striking domestic green roof design.” Boningale GreenSky also helped with the supply of the substrate, making sure it had the correct nutrition level and water holding capacity for the plants to thrive in the long term.

When Tinwood Estate winery in Chichester looked to expand its service to customers by building three luxurious vineyard lodges in the grounds, they asked ANS Global to provide green roofs for each. Passionate environmental custodians, the owners of Tinwood look to encourage biodiversity wherever possible, and incorporating living roofs into the woodland accommodation seemed an ideal contribution.
The lodges are contemporary and high-end providing both luxury and comfort. Built from western-clad cedar they are designed to blend seamlessly into the woodland surroundings providing a fun additional element to the vineyard experience, but also reinforcing the Estate’s commitments to environmental causes. As much as the lodges are intended to provide temporary shelter for guests at the Estate, they also offer longer-term sanctuary for wildlife with green roofs presenting ideal conditions for many species to thrive. Green roof creators plan a bio-diverse structure specifically to attract wildlife whilst also allowing for the addition of other features such as beehives, birdbaths, insect hotels and log and stone outcrops. There is plenty of scope for all such additions in the grounds of the Estate, and with Tinwood being part of the Entry Level Stewardship Scheme – a recognised
GREEN ROOFS sedum green roof can be a cost effective way to reduce your storm water tank size. The other specification was a specially grown wildflower blanket that contained an array of Wildflowers native to the area. The native plants have become vital in green roof design to try and best replicate the previous wildlife on the site. By using native plants they have created an effective nectar source at roof level to support the bees, butterflies and other rare invertebrates creating a stepping stone for wildlife across a grey city scape.

Elephant and Castle
Eco Green Roofs have just completed the first phase of the Elephant and Castle Regeneration. The huge scheme is being built over the course of over ten years and the first phase Trafalgar place is just being finished. Eco green roofs installed a series of roofs over a number of different buildings on the development. There were two green roof specifications used the first was standard sedum blanket roofs, these were used in the more shaded areas and eco green roofs successfully installed over 400m2 of sedum blanket. the sedum blanket specification was different to a usual sedum specification because the blanket was laid on 120mm of substrate as opposed to the optimum 60mm in most of our standard sedum blanket green roof systems. The reason for the 120mm of substrate was to account for extra storm water runoff, by using the sedum roof you can calculate for more water retention in the storm water calculations which allows a reduction in the size of a storm water tank. So the
Richmond Park The brand new Richmond Park golf course clubhouse, built in the famous Royal Richmond Park, was specified to have a beautiful green roof to ensure it blended into its magnificent surroundings and limit the impact on the protected local wildlife. Eco Green Roofs Ltd. undertook this prestigious green roof project, producing a spectacular acid grassland roof using turf grown from within the park itself. Eco Green Roofs was asked to trial a range of new green roof substrates (soils) that would be suitable for the acid grassland covering. Generally, substrates are alkaline not acidic in nature, therefore expertise in this field was provided by Eco Green Roofs’ in-house ecologist, Dr. Chloe Molineux. She holds a Ph.D in green roof substrate design and conducted a range of tests using the Richmond Park turf and specially formulated substrate blends in order to provide the project with the most successful specification possible. The result is a superb semi-intensive green roof that makes the clubhouse disappear into the park and provides the building with many economical and ecological benefits, including: storm water attenuation, heat and sound insulation and habitat for many plants, invertebrates and birds.

Revisiting Yesteryear Developer Anderson Group’s ambition was to create a typical Essex village plan, using different house styles to create an attractive community. It was essential the products used on the properties were versatile, and would look good across the different types of dwellings. Mark Thurston, Procurement Manager at Anderson Group commented: “One of the biggest challenges when working on a project of this scope is the need for products that are high quality but also cost-effective. These were the criteria that led us to choosing Natural Paving products, as the stone available was a perfect fit, with remarkable texture, colour and price. We’ve been very impressed with the company’s paving solutions and look set to use them again on another upcoming job.” Anderson Group asked local builders merchants, Sliverton Aggregrates, to put forward a range of sandstone choices for the development’s outdoor environment. After viewing a range of choices, they settled for Natural Paving goods on grounds of the product’s colour and shade. Mark Buckle, Customer Sales at Silverton Aggregrates commented: “We were approached by Anderson to put forward a sandstone option for this development. Natural Paving was the third company we presented to them and they were very impressed. I experienced no problems working with Natural Paving, part of the Talasey Group. When necessary, the company was helpful and responsive. Late on in the development, Anderson Group changed the specification from single size stones to larger packs. It was a challenging moment and we didn’t have much time to react. Thankfully, Shaun Utting of the Talasey Group was on hand to resolve the issue. “ Shaun Utting, who was in charge of helping Anderson

This year has been a great year for urban greening all over the globe, according to ANS Global, which has its head office in Aldingbourne, Chichester. “The green agenda is on the increase in the UK, with the Mayor of London planning to make more than 50% of the capital’s area green by 2050, making it the world’s first ‘national park city’ by 2019,” said a company spokesperson. “We’ve had a busy year installing living walls in the UK and

His series of timber sculptures and objects follow three design themes: people, animals and plants. Instead of traditional sculpture materials, such as bronze or stone, the artist uses materials from the building, furniture and automotive industry. LIGHTING
Colour Preferences Embrace coloured light in the garden for an elegant paradise By Martin Bennett Garden designers often view coloured lights as garish, with clients sometimes insisting only on warm or cool white light. However, Coloured lighting can be exciting, and if used in the correct way, can make a huge difference in the overall appearance of a garden at night, especially in winter.
Uplit Comparison
A fantastically effective way to use Colour is to ‘wall wash’, or to up-light a feature. These are well-known techniques, that are worth experimenting with. There are in fact many other ways colours can be used differently, to bring your garden to life at night. Orange Dichroic uplighting Lion
An effective method is to enhance the natural surroundings with similar colours. A great example of this is up-lighting trees or plants. Use a green dichroic lens or coloured bulb to enhance their natural, lush appearance. It will create vibrant green foliage rather than what can be a washed out green, which can be the case when using white light. Lighting a specific feature in this high impact way can also help draw the focus away from other areas of the garden. Lively purples and reds are great to emphasize the heads of flowers, berries and lavender bushes, and warmth is easily achieved by using a warming amber tone. Bring ornaments to life with colour – one of my favourite pictures is of the lion statue (inset), uplit with an orange lens which really makes him stand out in what appears to be his natural colour. Coloured lights are widely available by using Dichroic coloured lenses available from Lumena at less than £6.00 each and coloured PAR38 Floodlights bulbs are ideal for uplighting medium to large trees. LED Wall washers are a new product from Lumena and are available in Red, Blue and Green as well as Warm and Cool white. Coloured waterproof IP68 Striplights are another product new to Lumena. These can safely be used outdoors and are idea for steplighting and around outdoor buildings. Warm, white, cool white, Red Green and Blue are available. Airport Project As part of the construction of a new £15m link road at Manchester Airport, Johnsons of Whixley has supplied trees, plants and grasses to the new Enterprise Way at Airport City North, in partnership with landscapers Blue Wigwam. The range included large single- and multistem trees, ground cover flowering plants and lowmaintenance grasses. The construction of the new link road, part of Airport City North at Manchester Airport, marks a major milestone to help underpin future development, including the creation of offices, advanced manufacturing units and new hotel beds, creating a total of 11,400 new jobs. Enterprise Way will connect new development plots to the rest of the landmark site and the wider transport network. Johnsons of Whixley senior amenity sales manager, Tony Coles, said: “The development at Airport City North is truly exciting, and it’s been a privilege to provide products to Enterprise Way section of the wider project. Working with our partners at Blue Wigwam, we have delivered to an
exacting specification and deadline.” Blue Wigwam director, Richard Hughes, said: “I have worked with Johnsons for the past 17 years, and in the past year they have given me support and a quality of service and product that I can’t get from other tree nurseries. I believe that my loyalties lie with Johnsons of Whixley, and for a good reason – they look after me and my company.” www.nurserymen.co.uk
Nursery Investment Glendale Horticulture took ownership of a 15.5 acre site nursery in Harvington, Evesham on 2nd January 2018. The new site has 16,868sqm of existing glass and is ideally situated within close vicinity of Glendale’s existing nursery sites. This site will provide additional production capacity for the business, with investment in new technology to develop more automated processes, which will enable Glendale to benefit from further production efficiencies. It is anticipated production will be introduced as early as February 2018, using the existing glass. The investment in this nursery supports the strategic growth plan for Glendale Horticulture in this market. www.glendale-horticulture.co.uk
Manager Appointment Glendale Horticulture is pleased to announce the appointment of Neil Dudley as Manager for its Lathom Nursery in Lancashire, with effect from 02 January 2018. His responsibilities will include management of both sites at Ring O’Bells Lane, Lathom, including logistics, despatch, planning, office administration, nursery production and some arboricultural activities. Green Game Myplant & Garden 2018 trade fair for horticulture and landscape will be across three halls, with eight macrosectors across the 45,000 sqm exhibiting space.
Hall 20 will have nurseries, garden care stands, and motor garden, plus a 300sqm outdoor area for demonstrations (between halls 16 and 20). Expanded green building and outdoor space (swimming pools included) will include ‘landscape area’ for meetings and international design studios. There will also be the seminars area and the Urban Green Management department. Hall 16 is represented by horticulture, services, pots and professional containers, and garden care. An exhibition with the theme of landscape is planned. Hall 12, connected to hall 16, will have an independent entrance, and is the new entry in this fourth edition of the fair. Hall 12 will be rich in innovations, initiatives and exhibiting sectors. The Garden Center New Trend event will open its doors with its third edition, divided into six areas following the ‘small concept, smart business’ notion. Half of hall 12 will transform into a colourful, bright and animated Décor District with flower fashion runways, exhibits and exceptional settings, and flower-design contests with international masters of decoration. There will also be art&craft labs, photo shooting sessions, music themes and a lounge area. Following the business theme, a new edition of GAME (Garden Meeting) will take place. GAME is the event dedicated to retailers in the garden industry, with a big arena open to meetings, surrounded by exclusive exhibiting areas. The most original and current themes in the green industry will attract professionals in the field, from landscape design to retail, and from production to research. www.myplantgarden.com

Award-winning Retail Project Johnsons of Whixley has supplied more than 20 varieties of shrubs and herbaceous plants to a landscape upgrade scheme at the Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre. Following a competitive tender process, the North Yorkshire nursery secured the five-figure contract to supply more than 7,500 plants in partnership with commercial landscapers Grace Landscapes, based in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. The company’s work on the 5.6ha site helped earn Grace Landscapes an award in the Soft Landscaping (£300k to £1.5m) category at the recent BALI Awards. As part of an ambitious upgrade scheme, the two businesses worked alongside other partners, including property developer British Land and Landscape Architect McGregor Smith and main contractor McLoughlin Harvey, to create a new identity for the facility. The landscape strategy was combined with a public art initiative to create a setting that reflects the character of the local area, including the surrounding Scottish woodlands, while encouraging visitors to spend time in the external, green spaces. Johnsons of Whixley senior amenity sales manager, Tony Coles, said: “It’s great to see the work commended by BALI, and we look forward to maintaining and further strengthening our relationship with Grace Landscapes, and our other partners in the commercial sector, during the next 12 months.” www.nurserymen.co.uk

The collapse of construction firm Carillion poses a threat to horticulture businesses that had contracts with the company. Many of the large construction projects Carillion was delivering have significant landscaping and nursery supply elements, leaving companies unsure whether they will get paid and jobs at risk. For individuals who find themselves facing redundancy and/or financial hardship as one of the knock on effects of this action, Perennial is here to help. The UK-wide charity is dedicated to helping everyone in the horticulture industry when they are in difficulty. Britain’s second largest construction firm, which employs 20,000 people in the UK, went into liquidation on Monday 15th January with debts of around £1.5bn. It is the smaller businesses that were sub-contracted by Carillion that are likely to bear the brunt of the company’s collapse. With the Government limiting its support primarily to the company’s public sector contracts, redundancies in commercial companies are expected to run into thousands. Trade body Build UK estimates that between 25,000 and 30,000 businesses are owed money by Carillion. Sheila Thomson, Director of Services at Perennial says: “The collapse of Carillion will affect a large number of small sub-contracted businesses, many of which were pro-actively encouraged by the Government to get involved in these public sector contracts. While Perennial cannot offer advice to businesses, we are here for any individuals from the
horticulture and landscaping trades that have been affected by the situation and are faced with redundancy, a cut in hours or a reduction in personal income in any way.” While many companies will have to wait to find out whether their debts will be paid, individuals who find they are facing redundancy, loss of income or financial hardship, can contact Perennial in strictest confidence for advice and support. Perennial’s services extend to everyone working in or retired from all parts of the horticulture industry. Perennial’s services are free, confidential and independent and help extends to spouses, partners and dependent children. Every person that Perennial helps faces different challenges and therefore all help is completely tailored to individuals and continues for as long as they need it. Perennial’s casework team can advise on benefit entitlement and help with any claims, represent at hearings and tribunals and award grants in certain circumstances. Perennial also has a dedicated debt advice service for those facing financial difficulties and its support includes negotiating with creditors and making applications for bankruptcy. If you are worried about your job find out how Perennial can help with the website: http://perennial.org.uk/home/ways-we-can-help/ or contact Perennial by email on services@perennial.org.uk or phone in confidence on 0800 093 8543.

The future of disease control A new disease forecasting tool on the Syngenta Greencast turf management website now gives a clear picture of disease pressure across the UK – and a forecast of where there risk of infection is set to occur and will enable more informed actions. Live Maps combine accurate weather forecast information along with proven disease prediction models, to foresee and track risks for up to five days before they occur. Encompassing Google maps, users simply zoom in to their own area for a close up of detailed local information. The maps cover all key turf diseases, along with forecast changes in soil temperatures and a new feature for Grass Growing Potential. Daniel Lightfoot, Syngenta UK Turf Business Manager, enthuses that one of the great advances of Live Maps for greenkeepers is the ability to visibly track conditions and risks progressing across the country – and giving time to assess action plans. “Targeting preventative disease programmes during periods of infection risk, but before symptoms break out
60
www.landscapermagazine.com
consistently maintains better playing surface conditions,” he advocated. Daniel pointed out that STRI research had shown fungicide programmes based on proactive forecasting maintained better conditions using fewer applications over the course of the season, compared to routine application or treatment at the first signs of disease. “Timing is the absolute key,” he advised. “Live Maps is a new way to better pinpoint the optimum application timing.” He believed that turf managers are going to have to get ever better at prevention in the future, to mitigate the impending loss of iprodione and to meet the increasingly stringent demands of today’s players “Whilst products such as Instrata Elite have excellent curative activity on early disease stages with in the leaf, the results are consistently better and longer lasting if it can be applied before symptoms have broken out on the surface,” he added. Danial believes the new Grass Growing Potential maps will be especially useful for aiding Primo Maxx application interval timing – enabling turf managers to focus on periods of peak growth and potentially ease off when conditions are less favourable. “If you use Grass Growing Potential in conjunction with soil temperature, it could be highly beneficial for timing renovation or over seeding activities to get seedlings off to the best possible start,” he said. “It also has a role for predicting turf recovery and implications for the disease management programme.” The Live Maps are available now free for all registered GreenCast subscribers, under the ‘Weather’ tab in the navigation bar. www.syngenta.com

THE
LANDSCAPER
By Tabitha Grammaticus-Smythe
Dear Fans Happy New Year – It’s been a while. I would like to thank the thousands of my loyal readers who took the trouble to send me a seasonal greeting card. Our dear leader has been sunning himself in some exotic location for nearly 30 days whilst the rest of us have been slaving away over a hot computer. You would think with that massive dose of Vitamin D his mood would at least be sanguine. Oh no. Ever since he found out that our young, handsome automotive editor Liam Campbell was being jetted to the Chilean Andes to test drive the new Mercedes X-Class he’s been like a bear with a sore head. ‘Effective this week, the company is adopting Fridays as Casual Day. Employees are free to dress in the casual attire of their choice’ reads a short note from our management. I guess that’s instead of our missing Christmas bonus. Well all I can say is that I’m confident that us girls will witness a wardrobe malfunction of epic proportions from the men in our office. Research carried out by garden furniture specialists BillyOh.com has revealed that greenfingered Brits with a fondness for the outdoors will spend the equivalent of over three years of their working lives preening and maintaining their gardens. Taking into account that Brits usually spend around 37 hours per week at work for 48
66

If I find that David Cameron hiding in one of these sheds I will do to him what he did to the country
weeks of the year. Even though Brits are less likely to venture into their gardens during the winter, their love for getting their sears, paint pots and lawnmowers out of the shed still sees them spending an average of just over two hours gardening each week. Putting on my Agony Aunt hat I must respond to Andy from Southend on Sea. Andy, you have to be very careful - it’s so easy to send a txt to the wrong person. I suggest you buy her a magnificent bouquet, a box of quality chocolates and offer to look after her garden for a year - free of charge. There is a good chance she will forgive you although I wouldn’t - still, I knew a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself. tabitha@landscapermagazine.com

THE PICKUP WITH X-APPEAL! Without doubt, one of the biggest vehicle launches of 2017 was the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. The X-Class, which is billed as the first pickup from a luxury manufacturer, is aimed at the premium, one-man bands, and it has been sculpted and finished accordingly. The German manufacturer is also promising to bring unparalleled levels of comfort and refinement to the pickup segment, without compromising its productivity or ruggedness. Our automotive editor, Liam Campbell, was one of the first few to put the X-Class through its paces on the breath-taking, and often hostile, landscape of the Chilean Andes.
