Editor’s letter On page 20, wood chipper manufactures Timberwolf help to unravel the latest government legislation on engine emissions for non-mobile machinery, which was released in January this year. In this article Timberwolf brings clarity to the changes and dispels the myth that diesel powered machines could no longer be used. Finally with the RHS garden shows still in full swing, we take a look at the winners at this year's Hampton Court Garden Festival which drew around 130,000 visitors.

Football fan or not, anyone would be hard pushed not to be impressed by the facilities at Tottenham Hotspur FC. The premier league opened its groundbreaking £850 million stadium, which boasts a retractable pitch and sunken artificial pitch so that it can host American football games, earlier this year to the applause of fans worldwide. But the White Hart Lane venue is not all the club (and the players) can be proud of - the training facilities at Enfield are not to be sniffed at. The 77 acre site has 15 perfectly manicured pitches, maintained by the groundscare team. It was on one of these pitches that I joined fellow members of the press and groundscare staff from local schools and sports grounds to witness the unveiling of the latest INFINICUT® SM34 Rotary Mower by Cub Cadet by Head of MTD Speciality Products UK, John Coleman. BALI NEWS

BALI’s LISS/CSCS SmartCard scheme announces plans to withdraw all Industry Accreditation cards by 2024

Do you work in the commercial land-based industry? Looking to upskill your own workforce? Trouble accessing certain live commercial sites? The Land-based Industry Skills Scheme (LISS) and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is a jointly managed scheme (LISS/CSCS) administered by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and enables you to work on live commercial land-based/construction sites. The scheme recognises qualifications and training experience, in turn improving employment prospects and enabling the ability to tender for commercial work that requires a LISS/CSCS SmartCard. LISS/CSCS is administered by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI). It is a standalone scheme but is also a requirement of the National Highways Sector Scheme 18 (Land-based). For all full operational SmartCard levels, the minimum requirement is the ROLO Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness Course and the CITB Touch Screen Test appropriate to your SmartCard level. Please note for the Modular Paving industry only the CITB Touch Screen Test appropriate to your SmartCard level is required. For several years the strategic direction of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) has focused on ensuring that all applicants can demonstrate the achievement of a nationally recognised construction related qualification. With the withdrawal of the Construction Related

Occupation card and the planned removal of the Site Visitor card the next step is the withdrawal of cards issued under Industry Accreditation. Industry Accreditation, also known as Grandfather Rights, allowed workers to obtain LISS/CSCS cards on the strength of an employers’ recommendation rather than the achievement of a recognised qualification. LISS/CSCS closed Industry Accreditation to new applicants in 2013 but those already holding a card are currently able to renew on the same basis. LISS/CSCS is led by CSCS who have consulted with the industry and agreed a plan that will pave the way for the eventual withdrawal of cards issued under Industry Accreditation. From 1st January 2020, all LISS/CSCS cards renewed under Industry Accreditation will expire on 31 December 2024 and CSCS will stop issuing the card from 30 June 2024. The withdrawal of Industry Accreditation will be the final step towards achieving the Construction Leadership Council’s objective of ensuring SmartCards are only issued to those who have achieved, or are in the process of achieving, a nationally recognised land-based related qualification. Up to now Industry Accreditation has permitted SmartCard holders to operate on live land-based commercial sites solely through an employer’s recommendation. To find out more information or to apply for a SmartCard visit bali.org.uk/lisscscs

Stage V Legislation: Unravelling the myths Timberwolf, specialists in the manufacture of professional wood chippers, uncover the myths of recent Stage V legislation for non-road mobile machinery In January this year (2019), the introduction of new government legislation to reduce engine emissions saw much speculation and misinformation in the arboriculture industry. A number of ‘myths’ were soon in circulation, with many believing that diesel powered wood chippers could no longer be used or purchased due to the new rules, known as ‘Stage V’, affecting non-road mobile machinery, including wood chippers. This is wrong. As the UK’s leading manufacturer of professional wood chippers, Timberwolf sought to bring clarity to these changes through the launch of its All the Facts, #NoOmissions campaign. Timberwolf’s campaign reassured those working in the arboriculture industry that pre-Stage V diesel wood chippers above 25HP, including its best-selling sub750kg wood chipper TW 230DHB, could still be used and traded after the implementation of the new rules. Through the publication of an easy-to-read White Paper and informative graphics across industry media

Antony Alexander, Product Marketing Manager at Timberwolf

20

www.landscapermagazine.com

and Timberwolf’s social platforms, the campaign ensured the facts surrounding the legislation were made clear and accessible to everyone. Timberwolf Product Marketing Manager, Antony Alexander says: “It’s over six months since we launched our ‘All the Facts, #NoOmissions’ campaign and the feedback has been really interesting. We’ve received lots of positive comments from the industry and it was great to answer questions and hear lots of conversations about the legislation at this year’s ARB Show. “Whilst it’s helped a lot, we’re still finding that some are unsure what Stage V means, so we’re working really hard to support people in understanding the impact. Stage V is by no means the end of diesel. Pre-Stage V engines, that were manufactured before January this year, can be sold for many months to come. Also, if anyone owns a diesel powered wood chipper already, they can continue to use it as they always have. “It’s certainly changed our industry and has presented a big challenge to manufacturers, but it is also an opportunity for innovation within our industry. We’re using our vast engineering expertise to develop a new range of Stage V compliant machines that will deliver unrivalled performance and change the face of the industry.” Timberwolf’s years of industry experience has enabled them to prepare in depth for the implementation of Stage V, with customers at the core of their plans. From 1st January 2019, the new legislation required engine manufacturers to cease production of pre-Stage V engines. However, it allowed 18 months for these engines to be installed in to products and placed on the market. As a result, Timberwolf invested in a significant number of pre-Stage V, 35HP Kubota diesel engines, an industry favourite due to its reliability, power and efficiency. This means the current range of diesel Timberwolf wood chippers will be available while stocks last; offering end users a level of choice unrivalled by any wood chipper manufacturer in the UK market. Antony Alexander said: “We have planned differently to other manufacturers. Through listening to customers, we know they want to keep buying machines using the

FEATURE 35HP Kubota diesel engines, operating at full power, ahead of the legislation change. “As a result, we have invested in a considerable number of pre-Stage V engines to meet this demand. “At the same time, our engineers are working to develop a new range of Stage V-compliant products which, when released, will be unrivalled in power and strength with no compromise on performance.” Timberwolf is renowned for offering the widest choice of diesel and petrol wood chippers on the market, designed and manufactured in its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, to meet the diverse needs of modern arborists. “We work hard to ensure Timberwolf products and customer service are at the forefront of our industry,

offering power, strength and support that no other manufacturer can,” says Antony Alexander. “Put simply, Timberwolf is more than a machine. When purchasing a Timberwolf product, customers are investing in over 30 years of industry experience and engineering excellence, and they have the peace of mind that our network of dealers and trained technicians are available to provide support wherever they are in the UK.” To date, Timberwolf has manufactured more than 13,500 machines from their purpose-built facility, in Stowmarket, Suffolk, using the best available production and quality control techniques. Customers are also supported by Timberwolf’s three year warranty and a UK-wide dealer network, with more than 250 trained Timberwolf technicians operating from 38 depots across the country.

ARBORICULTURE

Timberwolf recognised among ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ The UK’s leading manufacturer of professional wood chippers, Timberwolf, has been recognised as one of the ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ in the London Stock Exchange Group’s 2019 Report. The annual report celebrates the UK’s fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) over the past three years, with companies representing over 40 sectors and spanning every region of the country included in the prestigious list. Stowmarket based Timberwolf was selected among a group of five businesses nationwide to represent the engineering and manufacturing sector, while also being highlighted as a leader within the manufacturing sector. Timberwolf produces Europe’s best-selling sub 750kg wood chipper series – the TW 230PAHB and TW 230DHB – from its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Suffolk. These two machines have contributed significantly to Timberwolf’s large growth in the UK and Europe, with sales increasing by 256% since 2013. Chris Perry, Managing Director at Timberwolf, said: “Everyone at Timberwolf works incredibly hard to deliver unbeatable power and performance from every machine so it is a real boost for the whole team. We have grown considerably in both size and sales over the past few years, so are very proud to cement that growth with recognition on the national stage.”

In the ever-evolving arboriculture industry Timberwolf has stood out through its drive to constantly improve machinery, using new technology combined with over 30 years of industry engineering experience, and is the UK’s leading manufacturer of professional wood chippers. As well as producing market leading products, Timberwolf provides unrivalled customer service and industry expertise. Doosan High Track Excavators at Forestry Contractor S Richardson Contracting Limited, based in Langholm in Dumfriesshire in Scotland, has purchased eight new Doosan DX160LC-5 HT 16 tonne High Track Crawler Excavators for work on the company’s forestry contracts throughout Scotland and North England. The new Doosan High Track Excavators were supplied by James Gordon Ltd (Gordons), the Authorised Dealer for the Doosan Heavy range in the South West and Borders regions, as well as the central-belt of Scotland as far as Argyle and Bute and the county of Cumbria in Northern England. Company owner, Simon Richardson, comments: “The Doosan High Track design allows us to easily negotiate tree stumps and other obstacles in forests, traversing sites much

more easily and not having to move/remove the amount of material we had to in the past.” The DX160LC-5 HT excavator combines the upper structure from Doosan’s DX140LC-5 14 tonne model with a heavier-duty 18 tonne class high track undercarriage, increasing the ground clearance from 410 mm in the DX140LC-5 to an impressive 615 mm. In its standard configuration, the digging depth of the DX160LC-5 HT is 5355 mm, the digging height is 8940 mm and the digging reach is 8080 mm. Simon Richardson added: “Unlike our previous excavators which were specially modified, the Doosan DX160LC-5 HTs are purpose built machines for the forestry and rough terrain

ARBORICULTURE work we undertake. We initially tried out a DX160LC-5 HT from Gordons and it performed really well and our operators liked the machine. So it was an easy decision to purchase more of them, particularly when they are part of the excellent package offered by Gordons combining reliable service and maintenance with their fast response.” Doosan also offers the larger DX180LC-5 HT High Track model, which is an enhanced version of the company’s DX180LC-5 excavator, incorporating a reinforced structure and a carefully re-engineered, high performance braking system, offering the same ground clearance of 615 mm as the DX160LC-5 HT, compared to 460 mm in the standard DX180LC-5. The DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT are powered by the Perkins 1204F engine, which combines reduced fuel consumption with the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement. The Perkins 1204F engine provides an output of 81.6 kW (109 HP) and 94.9 kW (127

HP) at 2000 rpm, respectively, in the DX160LC-5 HT and DX180LC-5 HT. For more information about Doosan construction equipment visit: www.doosanequipment.eu

Isuzus are perfectly made for Maydencroft’s growing business… In recent times, specialist arboriculture and land management company Maydencroft Ltd has developed a preference for Isuzu trucks, following the successful performance of its first two Isuzu 7.5 tonne rigids and two Isuzu Grafter 3.5 tonne rigids. “Overall, our first Isuzu trucks have given us a really solid performance to date, but we have been particularly impressed by the towing capability of the 3.5 tonne Grafters, together with their manoeuvrability, light weight and amazing payload. This combination makes them perfect for our job,” said Tom Williams, managing director, Maydencroft Ltd.

MOWERS

The driving force in zero-turn mowers For the professional operator, a machine that does the work in half the time of a conventional lawn tractor has to be a major consideration. This potential to increase productivity is one of the driving forces behind the growth in popularity of zero-turn mowers in the UK. The Zenith 60 is the latest zero-turn in the Ariens range. Powered by the reliable Kawasaki FX730V 726cc engine, the Zenith has a forward speed of 8.5mph (13.7kph) for fast mowing. Cutting the grass at speed combined with total manoeuvrability gets the job done faster, without compromising a quality finish. Easy steering levers allow the operator to drive, brake, steer and spin on the spot. Negotiating around objects has never been easier. At the end of the mowing row an operator

can effortlessly turn 180º, saving time and without going over already cut grass. The Zenith’s large 152cm (60”) cutting deck makes another contribution to greater productivity. Built with 10-gauge steel its 14cm (5.5”) depth provides optimal airflow in all mowing conditions. The foot-operated deck lift system provides effortless adjustments between 15 cutting positions in 6.35mm (¼”) increments with a vertical pin selection. The Constant Belt Tension System ensures the correct tension, minimising wear and heat while providing enhanced belt life with minimal adjustments. The Zenith features an industryleading frame design with large tubular frame rails as a backbone to support the machine loads. The frame is fitted with a Rollover Protection System (ROPS) as standard. To keep the operator comfortable through the day the high backed, ergonomically designed, padded seat not only reduces user fatigue, it also helps to absorb the impact on uneven surfaces. The Zenith 60 comes with a two-year commercial warranty or three-year residential warranty.

Dennis PRO 34R tops the wish-list at Warwick Duncan Toon, Grounds Manager for Warwick Independent Schools Foundation, says that when he heard rumours about the new Dennis PRO 34R rotary mower, he added it to his wish-list straight away. Warwick School, Warwick Junior School, King’s High School and Warwick Preparatory School are justly proud of their sporting success, including national awards, and the ability to provide all its pupils the opportunity to play their chosen sport. Essential to their achievements are high quality and well-maintained sports pitches. Therefore, the Foundation has recently made additional investments in its grounds in a bid to ensure the very finest sporting facilities. “I had heard rumours about this new machine which was set to be a game changer and Dennis was always on my wish-list because I know they manufacture reliable machinery,” says Duncan. “I arranged a demonstration as soon as I could and based on what I saw I knew I just had to have one. I was amazed with how well built it was – it was robust and the finish was fantastic.” The PRO 34R was first introduced to the industry at SALTEX 2017 with the sole purpose of gathering feedback from potential end users. Over the course of the next 12 months, the mower was refined and developed based on the input from the groundsmen who would eventually be using

26

it. The latest PRO 34R was unveiled at SALTEX 2018. The Dennis PRO 34R is a 34” (860mm) rotary mower which has been designed to help groundsmen achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface. It is ideal for sports pitches and lawns producing the enviable ‘Dennis Stripes’ while a powerful vacuum flow collects debris quickly and efficiently. The angle of the cutting deck and twin blades can be easily adjusted using a single ‘click adjuster’ ensuring the mower is suitable for changing conditions and meeting groundsmen’s requirements. “The best feature about the PRO 34R is the presentation and the incredibly fast clean-ups. We use it to clean the pitch up after rugby matches and also after training sessions and the brush on the front is a big bonus as it enables you to really get into the sward. “You’re achieving two key maintenance tasks with it – you are cleaning up all the debris and you are also getting that amazing finish. I’m really impressed with it.

HARDSCAPER FEATURE

Concrete by design: Making a statement in the garden Updating or re-designing a garden can be an exciting prospect for customers, yet it seems that a simple patio with weatherproof chairs and portable grill just won’t do the trick anymore. People want a comfortable spot to connect with family and friends that replicates, and in many cases exceeds, the comfort of their indoor gathering spots. But where does the customer start? Sandra Higginson, Technical Advisor at Tarmac Cement, discusses how landscapers can help their clients achieve their ideal outdoor space Talking trends Modern and visually appealing, with qualities of strength, durability and affordability, concrete is seeing a new wave of usage and innovation in outdoor spaces. Innovation in moulding and setting techniques have boosted its versatility, with many landscapers using the material in unexpected and unusual ways. The hard-wearing material blends well with surrounding nature while many different types of concrete can be applied in a variety of finishes to suit an array of shapes, styles and designs. Importantly, concrete is relatively inexpensive, and it can endure extreme weather without cracking and scratching, as well as provide strong resistance against moisture, mould or pests. Bringing the inside out People talk about bringing the outside in, but when deciding on garden furniture and layout, it’s time to bring the inside out. A trend now, is to make an outdoor space as inviting as the interior by turning the garden into a stylish entertaining hub for friends and family. More than just adding a garden sofa, landscapers are beginning to explore the different ways they can add value to their customers’ alfresco aspirations with concrete worktops, furniture and accessories. Fuelled by a rising trend in outdoor kitchens, installing a concrete worktop is a sure-fire way to infuse a stylish aesthetic into your client’s garden. The worktop doesn’t need to appear cold or industrial, concrete can complement almost any style of garden, the key is to suggest adding other warmer, natural textures like fabric or wood to keep it from feeling too austere. Adding inserts or inlays is a great way to personalise a concrete workstation. Whether its small stones, pieces of glass or other materials that are mixed throughout the

28

www.landscapermagazine.com

concrete, these can all contribute to a stylish and livable outdoor landscape. However, as concrete worktops are generally long, slender, thin beams, it’s critical to use a product with sufficient workability, aggregate grading and strength such as Tarmac Blue Circle High Strength concrete (40N).

The brick barbeque The classic brick barbeque is a firm favourite in the summertime, yet it doesn’t need to come with a hefty price tag. Simple to build and use, a brick barbeque can be an attractive addition to any patio area, without the added worry of rusting or breakage to metals. Simply build a solid foundation, mark out the brickwork area and prepare a mortar to lay the bricks. Using a prebagged, ready to use mortar mix such as Tarmac Blue Circle Quality Assured Mortar, simplifies the task even further, requiring only the addition of clean water. The perfect patio As mentioned above, concrete offers permanence, durability and is also relatively inexpensive, but more than that, it’s

HARDSCAPER FEATURE a material that can set apart an exterior space from the mundane to an attractive and contemporary space. As landscapers know, of all the materials available to build patios, concrete is the most traditional yet versatile choice. It can be smooth, clean, can be cast and formed into curved or complex geometric shapes, and, with the addition of colour, tints and finishes can become anything other than the classic light grey. Of course, many landscapers can just pour a simple concrete slab, but if they want to create a patio which boasts a variety of shapes, sizes, colours and textures, without creating a set of moulds or concrete stamps it’s a good idea to use paving slabs.

specially selected sand and cement for use under patio paving slabs. It also comes in 20kg weatherproof, tear resistant packaging to reduce wastage on site. No patio is complete without pointing in between the paving slabs. Often, these joints can be the first casualty of ground movement and external pressure, so if you do not wish to gauge and mix your own mortar products, it’s crucial to suggest a weather resistant and durable mortar. A good example is Tarmac Blue Circle Quality Assured Mortar which comes in 20kg weatherproof bags and, importantly for smaller projects, is also available in conveniently sized 5kg and 10kg re-sealable tubs. Additional jobs Not all landscaping projects are determined by the bigger jobs. Something as simple as checking for unstable fence posts or empty joints between paving slabs can keep a garden in shape during summer.

Laying the patio

Big or small, an area of paving – stone, concrete, brick, geometric or even modern irregular layouts – can look great and provide an excellent centerpiece for an outdoor area. For this reason, it’s important for landscapers to utilise the most appropriate products and materials that can aid in the construction of a strong, sound and level patio. Hardscapes can often be high-traffic areas, therefore its important the patio has the required attributes to handle extra foot traffic and provide resistance to weathers year-round. A pre-packed ready to use product such as Tarmac Blue Circle Slablayer is a suitable choice for bedding slabs and overcomes many problems relating to site mixing. These include correctly gauging the mix; the use of excess water and the addition of other inappropriate materials, that can result in reduced strength, increased permeability and reduced durability of the hardened mortar bed. With improved quality and consistency, high quality products such as Tarmac Blue Circle Slablayer contain

Quick set for fence posts

For unbalanced fence posts, use a quick setting, no mix concrete product, such as Tarmac Blue Circle Postcrete. Bury the post below the ground, then simply fill the hole one third with clean water and pour in the Postcrete evenly around the post until dry powder is visible on the surface. The Postcrete will set in as little as 10 minutes. Clearly, the creative possibilities of concrete are expanding, and builders have the opportunity to use concrete in original and inventive ways. Yet, whether it’s a glamourous alfresco job or routine garden maintenance, using the right cement and concrete products can be crucial to maintaining a functional outdoor space.

Hever Castle to sell ready-made Euroflor packs thanks to positive reponse from visitors to the attraction As a result of the “fantastic success” of its displays of Rigby Taylor’s Euroflor urban meadow flower seed mixes, Kent-based stately home Hever Castle has not only expanded the total area planted this year to more than 5,000 m2, but it has also launched a retail scheme where ‘ready-to-sow’ flower seed kits are available for purchase by visitors. The meadow flower project on the 400-acre estate, which includes an adjoining golf course, was initiated last year by Hever Castle Golf Club’s head greenkeeper Rob Peers to “encourage visitors to both the golf course and the estate to fully enjoy and be immersed by and engaged with the complete site”. He says the project “has been an overwhelming success” with the nine meadow areas – throughout the castle grounds and on areas of the golf course – which feature a wide range of flower species, attracting laudatory comments: • A social media frenzy of visitor photos, plus local and national press coverage; • An endless stream of appreciative comments from

32

www.landscapermagazine.com

visitors, as well as from Hever Castle staff and proprietors; and • Numerous requests (from visitors) asking how they can achieve similar displays of the eye-catching colours and wonderful scents. The Euroflor seed mixes (from Top Green, the largest seed producer in Europe) were selected in terms of being ‘best fit’ options in terms of colour and height, as well as in texture and form, and Rob says particular success has been enjoyed this year with four mixes - Meadow Breeze, Rainbow Annuals, Bleuet de France and Classic that give displays that will last through the summer and into October/November. Looking back to last year, Rob says: “After clearing the unused, mainly overgrown plots – which largely entailed the removal of grass, brambles and weeds – the areas were prepared for seeding and there is no doubt that the key to flowering success was in the preparation of the beds, especially the applications of weedkiller. “We sowed on May 21-23 and within just five days saw the first seeds germinate. Despite having no rain for the following

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE we did in May and June last year so, not surprisingly, the results have been very different. But visitor reaction has again been very positive”. As a result of the increasing popularity of the displays, and in response to many enquirers’ asking ‘how can we have similar displays?’, Hever Castle now offers visitors ‘ready to sow’ seed packs including the ‘lay down and plant’ FloraFleece biodegradable matting package – both with instructions - for easy-to-achieve colourful displays. Rigby Taylor’s FloraFleece eliminates the need for extensive soil preparation. Rob adds: “It would be egotistical to say that the displays have added to the footfall here – Hever Castle puts on many added-value attractions throughout the summer to attract visitors – but there has clearly been more people making their ways to the areas of the estate where we planted and there’s been lots of favourable comments. “In addition, I’ve never seen so many pollinators on the estate – a wonderful sight”. 62 days, we enjoyed a fantastic display beginning at the end of July – and it continued to last well into late autumn.” Lack of natural rainfall last summer put obvious pressure on germination and plant growth: “But I was determined the project wouldn’t fail, and it was a case of all hands to the pump – including family members – to keep the seeds/ flowers watered using bowsers and watering cans three times a week. Since the end of July, when it did rain again, the plots largely took care of themselves.” This year, he says, the weather has been completely different – “we’ve had so much rain and a lot less sun than

Rigby Taylor’s Pollin-8 – addressing the needs of pollinating insects Project Pollin-8 is a major initiative aimed at reversing the national decline in pollinating insects using the Euroflor Banquet urban flower seed mixture containing the best species for pollinators while also delivering high visual impact. A key factor in the continual reduction of pollinators is likely to be loss of habitat, and the use of urban flower mixtures for landscaping projects will prove vitally important in arresting the decline. The introduction of the Banquet mixture is the result of information obtained from independent research by the Urban Pollinators Group (UPG), a national research programme run by Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds and Reading Universities (2010-2013). The research revealed that no one mix would meet the complex ecological demands of the diverse pollinator groups throughout the different stages in their life cycles - from early to late flowering, native and horticultural species, plants for egg laying, nectar for energy and pollen for protein. With this in mind, nine other Euroflor mixtures (as well as Banquet) have been identified as meeting the demand for a longer seasonal supply of nectar and pollen, as well as a more diverse range of habitats, while also providing incredible flower displays. The nine other Euroflor mixtures are Flora Britannica, Fragrant Lawn, Green Roof, Honey, Native Pollinator, Rainbow Annuals, Rainbow Perennials, Spring Flower and Super Blue Bee.

Green screen comes to Woking high street Residents and visitors to Woking High Street, Surrey are enjoying a new natural walkway thanks to the installation of a 75m living wall from Mobilane, a company that develops, grows, supplies and installs innovative and sustainable green wall and fencing systems for the built environment.

The green screens sit along the length of the Woking Train Station’s exterior wall as part of the Council’s green commitments. Complementing other green initiatives in the

transformation of the town’s Albion Square, the ivy screens now form a naturally green frame for the town’s iconic mural that depicts life along High Street in Edwardian times. With a mix of species for interest and colour, the wall will attract insects and wildlife to an otherwise grey part of town. In addition it will help improve air quality, as their foliage aids the trapping and capturing of harmful pollutants from passing and stationary traffic. The screens, which are watered by an innovative drip line irrigation system, offer variety of foliage and floral interest, planted with Hedera Helix Woerner, variegated and nonvariegated, and the new Euonymus Darts Blanket. Accommodating the natural slope of the road and walkway, the screens maintain a straight top edge using a mix of screen heights from 1-2.2 metre. Installed in fibreglass containers to allow for ease of placement by forklift and potential repositioning at a later date, the screens were cut to fit prior to the installation of irrigation by the Mobilane technical team. The screens ongoing maintenance will be managed by Woking Council.

Wildflower matting supplied for Balancing Pond on new homes site Green-tech has recently supplied 1000 square metres of John Chambers wildflower matting for a newly created Balancing pond on a new housing development. Landscape contractors PGE Landscaping Ltd were working on behalf of major UK residential property developer, Bellway homes on a development in the market town of Ashby-de- la-Zouch, and used Green-tech to supply the wildflower matting. A balancing pond (also known as a balancing lakes, attenuation or retention ponds) acts as a temporary storage facility for watercourses such as streams. Rather than water being discharged directly into the watercourse, potentially overwhelming it and causing flooding, the water is stored in the balancing pond. John Chambers Wildflower Matting contains a balanced mixture of wildflowers and grasses growing in a moisture retentive biodegradable felt, that provide an instant wildflower meadow. Made up of native wildflower species, the Wildflower Turf will provide beautiful blooms that will grow back year after year. As well as being lovely to look at, it

34

will encourage biodiversity and over time will help build up and support an ecosystem. Jon Austin, Head of Sales & Estimating from PGE Landscaping Ltd says: “We have worked with Green-tech on numerous occasions and were really pleased with the quality of their John Chambers Wildflower Matting. It was delivered as specified and was easy to lay with instant results. The client was pleased and we’ve overheard local residents commenting on how impressive it is and how it has created a lovely view for those living in sight of it. They’re just waiting for the ducks now! I have no hesitation recommending both Green-tech and the John Chambers Wildflower Matting.”

London School fights back against pollution with a Living Wall How one London school fought back against air pollution and won support from the Mayor of London and local celebrities Claiming more than four million lives worldwide every year1, outdoor air pollution is the silent, invisible killer slowly infecting cities and urban spaces. With more than 2,000 locations across the UK having levels of air pollution that exceed safe limits2, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the issue a “public health emergency” with immediate action needed to save lives both now and in the future. Caused by a toxic combination of increasing road traffic, idling cars and urbanisation, dirty air is putting the next generation in the UK’s capital at the most risk. Research from WHO revealed that every school in London breaches safe air pollution limits, with children being exposed to some of its most dangerous forms. Clogging up cities and lungs, these invisible particles are linked to respiratory diseases and shortening lifespans and are often the unwelcome by-product of many schools being located near busy main roads. However, the war against dirty air is gaining momentum and some schools and parents are fighting back by taking the issue into their own hands and gaining national recognition for it. This was the issue facing St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Chiswick, with parents turning to plants to create a greener, cleaner future for their children. Clogging up Located in Chiswick near the A4, a major six lane road, the issue of air pollution hit home for St Mary’s when a survey in 2017 revealed the school was among the top 50 most polluted schools in London. Andrea Carnevali, a parent at St Mary’s and the man behind the ‘Chiswick Oasis’ project said: “It’s scary to think that our children are breathing in toxic air simply by going to school – a place that is supposed to be safe - and the survey results really shocked us into taking immediate action. “As parents, we got together and asked the question – what do we do? It was obvious that we needed to make some significant changes if we want to improve the air quality for our children and that we needed to do it quickly.” Launching the Chiswick Oasis project in 2018, with the aim of creating cleaner, greener air at the school, the parents rallied into action and batted around possible solutions,

from air purifiers to non- toxic paint. However, they saw the biggest opportunity externally in the school’s neglected playground area, with its 126m perimeter wall running right alongside the polluted A4 road. Andrea said: “A living wall was mentioned as a possible solution, and the more we looked into it, the more we realised the power that plants could have in not only cleaning the air, but in also bringing the rarely used space back to life and opening it up to the public as a green space. However, while not being the easiest option, we knew we needed help from the public and local community to raise the funds to help bring this idea to life.” Plant power Setting up a crowdfunding initiative, the Chiswick Oasis Project received an overwhelming amount of public and local community backing, raising in excess of £90,000, along with winning celebrity support from the likes of Jeremy Paxman and Claudia Winkleman. The initiative also received £32,000 in funding from the London Mayor’s ‘Crowdfund for London’ programme. Andrea said: “We knew that we needed expert guidance to help us make the living wall a reality. This included making sure we were choosing the best plants to improve air quality, as well as ensuring it was simple to maintain and keep alive! We also wanted a wall filled with variety, colours and smells, as many other similar projects usually only contained ivy type plants.”

FEATURE The Chiswick Oasis group approached ANS Global, the world’s leading supplier of external and internal living walls, with Urban Environment Consultant, Steve McIntyre offering his expert guidance. “We immediately saw the opportunity for a living wall to make a positive impact on air quality at the school, with the right plants able to remove toxins in exchange for clean, fresh oxygen,” Steve commented. Often featuring lush foliage, flowers and grasses, living walls utilise the power of plants to create vertical gardens which work to clean the air by filtering out harmful pollutants. Steve says: “We worked with the school to select a specific plant palette, many of which were indigenous to the local area, which would not only purify the air, but also support biodiversity and local wildlife – giving it the added benefit of being an interactive learning tools for pupils. “Our bespoke modular system means that the wall has been designed to thrive for the long term, and with an automatic irrigation system, it also requires little maintenance. As well as being relatively simple to install, our system also ensures that there is also no waiting around for plant growth, with the living wall’s lush foliage visible from day one.” Urban oasis Installed in June 2019 by ANS Global, the living wall spans the perimeter wall of the playground and features over 12,000 plants. It was officially opened at a launch event by London Mayor, Sadiq Khan. The Mayor used the event as an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of improving urban air quality, as well as highlighting the value of community projects like Chiswick Oasis. Transforming the playground area into a lush urban oasis, the new green area will also be open to members of the public, as well as playing host to future community events. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan – whose Crowdfund London initiative pledged £32,000 to the project – says: “I am delighted to officially open the ‘Chiswick Oasis’ for the community who have done so much to bring this project to life. “Our toxic air is a public health crisis that increases the risk of dementia and asthma and damages the lung development of our children. I’m doing all I can to tackle it but Concerned parent Andrea Carnevali I can’t succeed without

the support of my fellow Londoners. ‘Chiswick Oasis’ is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when communities work together to find innovative solutions to local problems and exactly the sort of project OUR Crowdfund London initiative was set up to support.” London Mayor Sadiq Khan ANS Global has planting on the Living Wall committed to maintaining the wall for free for the next five years and has already provided training to teachers and parents at the school, explaining in more detail how the living wall works. Steve said: “It is fantastic to be involved in the St Mary’s Chiswick Oasis project, which address the issue of improving air quality in urban environments. “Research has shown that just green infrastructure can filter out up to 95% of the pollution created by vehicles3, which demonstrates the true power of plants. We hope that Chiswick Oasis is the catalyst for more schools to learn about living walls, which have the potential to make a positive impact on people’s lives and health.” Andrea has no plans to stop the work into improving air quality at the school in the future saying; “We are also tackling indoor air quality by adding more plants, painting the school’s ground floor in air purifying paint and installing air purifiers. We are still raising funds to extend the living wall vertically, so it covers the whole playground wall, and we have also launched weekly ‘No Car Friday’ initiatives to encourage parents and children to walk to school. “As well as tackling the issue of sound and air pollution, living walls will also hopefully help to improve the general psychological wellbeing of children and staff, with research showing that having access to greenery can make people feel happier. “We are very grateful of the support we have received so far. We are not just transforming one of the most polluted schools in London into one of the greenest, but I’d like to think that we’re also creating a model to inspire other schools.” • www.chiswickoasis.com • www.ansglobalgroup.com References: 1 https://www.who.int/airpollution/en/ 2 Friends of the Earth, Pollution Map, 2019 3 Green Facades Explained: From Benefits to Installation

BLEC Cultipack seeder aids suitable alternative natural green space developments Surrey-based Graduate Landscapes are the latest company to enjoy the accuracy and versatility of the Cultipack Seeder from BLEC. Now involved with an increasing number of ‘Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space’ (SANGS) developments, for Managing Director Tony Richards the purchase gives them the flexibility they need on both small and large-scale projects. With SANGS areas of up to 30 hectares to transform on some projects, Graduate purchased a BLEC Cultipack Seeder at the end of last year. “Through the years we’ve taken on all kinds of jobs, but increasingly of late we have worked in conjunction with the General House Builders Association, to create beautifully landscaped open spaces for public use” explains Tony. “We’ve always had the need for a seeder but had previously found it more cost-effective to hire one, until the frequency we were doing this made purchasing our own a better choice. “We used the Cultipack multiple times in the past and were always impressed with its capabilities, especially how the front-mounted rollers level off divots and lumps to leave a perfectly flat surface in its wake. It can handle a variety of seed types too, including wildflower, and buries the mixture into the prepared ground to improve germination and leave a better-quality finish.” While taking large-area projects in its stride, the Cultipack is equally at home on smaller domestic jobs. On garden projects for example, Tony and the team will

rotovate the land, then hand-rake and follow up with the BLEC seeder. “It does a fantastic job in taking grotty areas of land and making them level, providing an ideal bed for new seed to grow. Its multi-purpose nature eliminates the need to utilise multiple pieces of equipment to create the finished result, saving both time and money.”

New Charterhouse double delivers versatility for Beedles Lakes Golf Club A Rink DS800 from Charterhouse Turf Machinery is helping to make light work of topdressing the 27 greens of Leicestershire’s Beedles Lakes Golf Club. This, together with a Verti-Drain® 7316 are the latest tools in the armoury of Head Greenkeeper Sam Shuttlewood. Time is of the essence for Sam and his team of six, with an 18-hole parkland course and 9-hole par 3 to maintain, along with a 16-bay driving range and 32-acre fishing lake. “Topdressing was one of those tasks we wanted to carry out more frequently, but the drop dresser we had would only cover a small area per pass meaning that we would

42

www.landscapermagazine.com

have to go over each green 10 or 15 times to get adequate coverage,” explains Sam. “Not only that, but it would fit on the back of one of our Gator’s which meant we would have to unmount our sprayer from the back each time we wanted to go out – all of this made it a time-consuming task,” The Rink DS800, in trailed form, immediately impressed Sam on his demonstration with local dealer Platts Harris. “The beauty of the Rink was that you simply hitched it on the tractor, plugged in the hydraulics and you were on your way. It was quick and easy to set-up and, unlike a lot of

GROUNDSCARE & TURF “Another reason we went for the Rink was the fact it is a disc-spreader which will enable us to conduct more frequent light dressings and, thanks to it’s impressive spreading width, we can cover a whole green in two or three passes.” Toward the smaller end of the Rink Disc Spreader range, the DS800 has a 0.8m3 hopper and is highly adjustable, offering a spreading width of up to 12m and a thickness of up to 15mm. It is available in both a trailed or mounted option. With the Rink bringing new flexibility to topdressing, Sam’s other purchase made in May 2019 was a Verti-Drain®

7316. “This will be a true multi-purpose aerator that we can use on greens, tees, approaches and fairways thanks to the range of tine options available.” He concluded, “On the day of the demonstrations the decision was easy – we saw two machines, we loved two machines, so we bought two machines!”

Rotary Mower for unsurpassed cut Maggie Walsh joins groundscare teams, greenkeepers and fellow members of the press at the Tottenham Hotspur FC’s training facility to the unveiling of the INFINICUT® SM34 Rotary Mower Standing on a hot July day on one of the many impressive training fields at the 77 acre Bulls site training facility for Tottenham Hotspur FC, Enfield, press and groundscare staff from local schools and sporting facilities gathered for the first in a series of launch events, to see and try out the new Cub Cadet INFINICUT® SM34 Rotary Mower. Using the very latest design technology, MTD Products (owners of Cub Cadet) design engineers have produced a machine that has unsurpassed rotary cut quality to ensure the best possible results regardless of turf conditions. The SM34 follows the same design philosophy as the rest of the INFINICUT® range, offering best in class performance with an emphasis on a modern, clean power source. It takes its mode of traction from the INFINICUT® reel mower, renowned for its durability, paired with a deck designed on the back of MTD’s considerable years of rotary experience. By utilizing expensive stamp tooling, users can be confident that airflow is optimal when compared to other fabricated decks. The culmination is a machine that ensures ‘fit-forpurpose’ application, but also necessary safety compliance that comes with rotary decks. Designed for professional users, the INFINICUT® SM34 can be used to mow grass in the traditional sense or used as a

John Coleman (centre), Head of MTD Specialty Products UK, with his Cub Cadet team at Tottenham Hotspur FC training grounds

stand-alone vacuum. In cut mode, the new rotary offers a striping effect usually only achieved with a professional reel mower. The 34” cutting width combines better productivity and lightweight design, which negates the issues of tire rutting and wear of a larger ride on mower. The blades are made from premium-grade, high carbon steel for better performance and extended life, and come pre-balanced to exhibit less vibration. As with the rest of the INFINICUT® fleet, the machine offers the operator a number of parameters, which can be tailored to their particular requirements. With the extreme accuracy of HOC that users often work to in mind, the SM34 has paralleling and deck pitch adjustment features as standard. It can be specified with either an engine generator or lithium battery as a power source. In battery mode the SM34 is quieter in operation, environmentally friendly and can provide significant fuel cost saving when compared to other rotary mowers. Commenting on its launch John Coleman, Head of MTD Specialty Products UK, says “The INFINICUT® Rotary was a natural product progression from our well recognised INFINICUT® cylinder mower range. The design of this machine is a combination of our own concepts and ideas but at the same time we’ve listened carefully to our customers feedback. The culmination is a machine that takes a known concept and places it firmly in the modern era by introducing wireless parameter adjustment via our proprietary InfiniApp®.”
