Health survey flags concern

A summary of the Health and Wellbeing report commissioned by Perennial. The results of the report indicate that most people working in horticulture generally feel good about their health (81%). But in reality, a large proportion of participants have experienced or are experiencing mental or physical conditions that do not equate with good health, as illustrated here.

The findings of research, commissioned by charity Perennial in 2021 to develop an understanding of health and wellbeing across the horticultural community, have shown that 81% of people generally feel good about their health. However, many are facing significant physical and mental wellbeing challenges that do not equate with good health. The findings are based on the combined results of Perennial’s Health & Wellbeing Survey (2021), the Horticultural Labour Market Research (2021) and the Wellbeing Kiosk Results (2019). The number of people in the industry with poor mental wellbeing is above the UK’s national average. 85% of people’s mental wellbeing was found to be poor or below average. Over three quarters of people are experiencing aches and pains, with back and joint pain being prevalent - 78% of respondents had experienced back and joint pain in the last six weeks. 33% only seek help when they believe that they’re really ill. Yet, a delay in seeking care could lead to a delay in diagnosis and treatment, living in pain for longer and/or a deterioration in their condition. Julia Hayne, Director of Services at Perennial, says: “Through the inaugural Horticulture Wellbeing Survey (2021), Labour Market Research (2020) and

Wellbeing Kiosk results (2019) we are building a picture of the health and wellbeing of the industry. There is a significant gap between individuals’ perceived and actual state of health and wellbeing. More awareness around good health and wellbeing is needed to prevent serious problems in the future.” The research provides the industry with an insight into the causes and impact of poor wellbeing. It highlights how individuals across the sector feel about their health and the issues that are important to them which include their physical and mental wellbeing, finances, careers and training. To truly build better futures for the whole horticultural community, Perennial encourages a shared understanding by the industry of the real and perceived challenges people are facing. As well as collaboration to develop sustainable solutions which support the key recommendations: • Help the horticulture community to understand good health and wellbeing • Encourage the horticulture community to build healthier lives and adopt positive routines • Build a culture of wellbeing • Develop our knowledge base The findings from Perennial’s Health & Wellbeing research are available at perennial.org.uk/survey

APL Award Winners announced The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) annual awards ceremony, sponsored by Bradstone, took place in March in London. Hosted by renowned garden designer, James Alexander Sinclair, the event recognised and celebrated the outstanding landscaping carried out by members of the APL. Simply Green Landscapes Ltd & Andrea Newill Garden Design took home the top award for their Project: Hermitage. The original outdoor space comprised of dated gardens as the house had originally been separate dwellings. Now one home, the new garden reflects this with obsolete walls, parking areas and enclosed spaces replaced with a unified garden. An extensive sunken dining and entertaining terrace is located close to the house, with a barbeque area and space for a hot tub. A path leads beneath an oak pergola to the games room, wildflowers and a woodland garden, with water feature and bespoke bench. The design and naturalistic planting enhance views to the rural landscape. The Judges commented: “This garden showcases fantastic spacial design and planting, combined with superb implementation of the project. The two work seamlessly together and they are worthy winners.” This year’s judges were Richard Barnard from Hillier

Peebleshire and East Lothian supplying a wide range of agricultural, construction and industrial machinery. Their stated aim is to provide a quality driven service through their After Sales support and Parts Department. Says Phil Everett, MD of BOSS off-road vehicles, the sole UK Corvus distributor: “We’re delighted W.M. Rose can give the Corvus range such a presence in Scotland, selling to customers the Terrain UTVs are very much built for. It is great to partner with a company that invests so heavily in product training and support.” Moving south of the border finds another family-owned agricultural machinery dealership, Paxtons, with their head office in the unusually named Durham village of Pity Me. They too have pride in their heritage, dating back to 1853, while today they are main dealers for a wide range of leading brands. With depots in Northallerton, Alnwick, Bentham and Lancaster, they are serving the requirements of farmers, contractors, local authorities and equestrian customers across Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and Lancashire. “Paxtons have everything we’re looking for in a Corvus dealer,” says Phil Everett. “They are all you would expect of such a progressive business providing high-quality service backed by highly skilled technicians. We know the Terrain range of UTVs is in excellent hands and welcome Paxtons to the Corvus family.”

RHS welcomes new Director General

Clare Matterson, CBE

The Royal Horticulutre Society (RHS) recently announced the appointment of Clare Matterson CBE, as the next Director General of the gardening charity. She will take over the role from Sue Biggs who retires this June. Sue leaves a stronger charity, with record membership numbers. She was pivotal in creating and delivering the Strategic Investment Programme across the RHS gardens, most notably overseeing the opening of RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford and the UK's first horticulutre scientific centre at RHS Wisley. Currently Executive Director of Engagement at the National History Museum (NHM) Clare will join the RHS at the beginning of May, allowing for a period of transition with Sue Biggs. In her role at the NHM, Clare led the development of the new strategy to create 'advocates for the planet' and drove forward initiatives including the Urban Nature Project. A member for the RHS for nearly 30 years, Clare herself is a keen gardener and believes gardening has the power to foster an important connection with the natural world, allowing everyone the chance to learn from nature whether from their own plot, a community garden or a simple window box. Says Clare, who was awarded her CBE for services to public engagement in science: “I can't wait to start and meet everyone who works at, volunteers for and is involved with this extraordinary charity and wider horticultural world. “It is both an honour and a joy to be the next Director General for the RHS. “The RHS is an organisation that matters and can make a real difference to the world. Gardens have such a huge role to play to shape a more positive future. It is in our gardens that we find ansers for people and planet, for community, for inclusion and for wellbeing.”

Book release: Son of the Secret Gardener Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel, The Secret Garden (1911) remains one of the most popular children’s books of all time. Although the book detailed a derelict garden on a rambling Yorkshire estate, Burnett based the story on her own beautiful and extensive garden at Maytham Hall (in Rolvenden, Kent). Burnett’s Head Gardener at the time she was writing was George Owen Millum, who was the inspiration for the gardener Ben Weatherstaff in her novel. George Owen's son, and namesake George Charles Millum, wrote a diary and detailed life on Maytham Hall where his father was Head Gardener - a through the key hole of life working on a country estate during the 1930s, the war years and into post-war Britain. George Charles followed in his father's footsteps and began working at DixonSmith's Nurseries in Chobham, Surrey then working at a number of large houses across Surrey. Much later George Charles' son Trevor Millum, discovered the diaries of his father, and decided to make them available to all, telling the story of his green-fingered father and grandfather. The Son of the Secret Gardener is a treasure trove of trugs and trowels, pruning and potting and weeding in all weathers. It is a fascinating read for those who love historic houses and their gardens and is destined to become as a much-loved bedtime read as Burnett's orginal. “Son of the Secret Gardener” by Trevor Millum is published by Quadrant Books (paperback, RRP £11.50) and available from all bookshops and online.

HTA roadmap to sustainability As part of its sustainability roadmap, the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has launched a new scheme to enable its members to share best practice and experience with each other and build a supportive community. Sustainability Reference Sites are HTA member businesses who are already doing considerable work in terms of implementing positive change and embedding sustainability into their business plans. The first HTA Sustainability Reference Sites have been named as Hillier Nurseries, The Barton Grange Group, The Gardens Group and New Wood Trees. Liz Williams, HTA Sustainability Executive says: “I am thrilled to be able to announce our new Sustainability Reference Site scheme. We have some members who are doing fantastic things to improve their businesses in a sustainable way and can share their experiences with other HTA members. This is an exciting step to continue helping our members along their own sustainability journeys.” The reference sites are ready to share their knowledge among HTA members and to champion the industry to

those outside of it. George Hillier from Hillier said “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share some ideas around reducing carbon footprint. We have implemented various green alternatives when designing Hillier Garden Centre Three Legged Cross, and we hope to spread this knowledge and create action amongst our friends and colleagues throughout the industry.” Mike Burks of the Gardens Group added “I quite often hear people say that the scale of the environmental and sustainability challenge is so great that they don’t know where to start. But my belief is that no matter where we each start from, it’s important to take a first step so that collectively we can make a huge difference.” There will be opportunities for HTA members to engage and interact with our Sustainability Reference Sites throughout the year, so members should look out for more on this soon. Find out more about what the reference sites have done to make their businesses more sustainable at hta.org.uk/SustainabilityRefSites

TOPSOIL’s Andy Spetch rides for Ukraine British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Andy Spetch will be cycling 100 miles on Sunday, 29th May, in support of Ukraine by raising funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee. He and his wife Jane are taking part in the RideLondon-Essex 100, which is taking place after a two-year hiatus as a result of COVID. The ride starts on London’s Victoria Embankment and continues into Essex via Epping Forest, Ongar, Fyfield, Great Dunmow and Chelmsford, returning through Ongar to Central London and the finish at Tower Bridge. Whilst Andy and Jane enjoy ‘leisure’ cycling, this event is going to be quite a mission for them both: “Like every thinking person, we’ve watched with disbelief the conflict unfolding in Ukraine and wanted to do what we could to help the now millions of people fleeing the country,” said Andy. “Any short-lived discomfort Jane and I experience during the 100 miles of the cycle ride will be nothing compared to the despair the Ukrainian people are experiencing. Tree giveaway greens a city During March 2022, Provender Nurseries in conjunction with Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, provided 1500 trees and 900 plants free to every resident of Ebbsfleet as part of their ‘Greening the City’ initiative. Provender Nurseries applied for the tender in late 2021 and were selected by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation to source and supply trees, 2L plants and associated sundries due to their biosecurity credential and Plant Healthy certification in January 2022. Working closely with Kevin McGeough, Head of Strategy and Placemaking at Ebbsfleet Garden City and Miriam Fagbemi, Ebbsfleet Community Building Manager, Provender Nurseries selected trees and plants that would increase biodiversity to the city with a mix of native trees, trees with high wildlife value, edible fruit trees and smaller plants grown in Kent in peatfree compost and kerb recyclable pots by Provender Nurseries themselves. A large number of trees sourced were of UK origin and selected. Promoted to residents via leaflet drops and social media campaigns, the trees and plants provided by Provender Nurseries were distributed to residents over five days and five separate drop off points. Supported by volunteers of local businesses and Ebbsfleet team members, residents were allocated either a tree, tree stake, tree tie and organic compost if they had a garden or three 2L plants and a bag of peat free compost if they lived in a balconied residence. Encouraged as part of the Queens jubilee celebrations, ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ uptake of the offer has been beyond expectations with many residents making the most of the opportunity to plant a free tree in their garden and valuing expert advice from members of the Provender Nurseries team on site at each tree giveaway to advise on tree choices. Volunteers were available to help load vehicles, load trees and in some cases to plant the trees for residents themselves. Surplus trees left over from the tree giveaways will be donated to schools and community projects around Ebbsfleet Garden City by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation. Says Richard Burt, Sales Director of Provender Nurseries: “When the opportunity arose to supply trees and small shrubs as part of the ‘Greening the City’ with Ebbsfleet Development Corporation we jumped at the chance to be involved in such a great initiative. When we provide plants to our clients, we rarely get to see the final finished article. However, in three to five years’ time we will be able to see the trees planted around Ebbsfleet creating a living legacy for the residents of Ebbsfleet for many years to come.” Kevin McGeough, Head of Strategy and Placemaking at Ebbsfleet Garden City adds, “Ebbsfleet is the UK’s first new Garden City for 100 years, and our series of ‘Free Tree Giveaway' events helped our new residents

to understand what is going to be special about living in their new homes. Firstly, the trees and plants will help to create a green and healthy place to live, enhancing biodiversity and improving future air quality. Equally important is the amazing sense of community that was apparent in each of our five giveaway events, with residents, and volunteers working with Provender Nurseries to choose, transport, and plant the trees and plants which they will watch grown with their families over future generations as Ebbsfleet Garden City itself grows. EDC would also like to applaud the Provender Team for their support and professionalism in helping us to deliver this exciting initiative.’

LANDSCAPER’S CIRCLE

Is it time for turf? Should we persuade our clients to favour natural over artifical lawns asks Paula Warman With spring upon us and summer just around the corner, clients are inevitably thinking about their gardens and how they can turn their outdoor space into a haven that accomodates family needs and lifestyles. Conversations with clients often turn to the question of whether they wish for a low maintenance garden or will they be happy to take on a garden that might need tending more often. Another question on client's minds is should they choose real turf versus artificial. Therefore, I ask should we be steering our clients towards using real turf over artificial? Do we have a duty of care towards the climate and our own carbon footprint to really think about the impact of laying lots of paving and artificial grass has on our future? You may have already seen the Landscaper's Circle's #TimeForTurf campaign, which is centred around raising awareness of the impact of choosing plastic over real turf. It is an interesting discussion and one that can cause heated arguments for and against. We have worked with a fellow industry member, garden designer and lawn lover Charlotte Howard to offer a free report that debunks the myths around artificial grass and aims to educate homeowners to make an informed choice when it comes to what products they use in their gardens. Do your clients claim to be climate conscious yet choose plastic lawn over natural turf? This is just one question to ask, do they recycle, drive an electric car but then choose a plastic lawn alternative? It really is insane, but it is the pressure to have perfection. A perfect looking outdoor space trumps a garden full of wildlife, lusciously imperfect lawns and natural habitats. This is where the problem really lies. I have spoken to artificial grass manufacturers about our time for turf campaign and they said artificial will not go away. I know this, however, surely it is about encouraging clients, installers and designers to think about their choice, educating them before they make a decision?

How do we encourage clients to choose sustainable products? I am fully aware that 'sustainable' doesn’t just mean avoiding artificial grass. Excessive hardscaping such as paving and concrete can also be detrimental to the environment. I believe that education is key. We need to show clients alternative options for their gardens that encourage a wilder feel rather than perfection. If they are eco-conscious does their outdoor space fit with their ethos and morals? I would ask this of the contractors and designers too. Throughout my research on real lawns I have discovered there are many options available to clients apart from the perfect lawn; wildflower meadows and tapestry lawns are two alternatives. When I spoke to David Hedges-Gower, Chairman of The Lawn Association, he pointed out that there are a variety of lawn types and soil conditions will determine how well it will grow. We need to remember that lawns are essentially the largest plant in our garden and are therefore the lungs. They need to be considered as such and not just as an afterthought which is often the case. In summary, I do not want to fan the flames and slate artificial grass companies or those that install. It is a product that continues to be extremely popular, so it is about education around the beauty of a natural lawn. Tips can be offered to show how it is just as easy to maintain a real lawn as the artificial alternative. It should be a natural consideration when we are thinking about climate change and environmental impacts, but also mindful we are offering our clients a choice that they are completely happy with. If the route chosen is atificial, then opt for the most sustainable source on offer? Is this even a real consideration? I'm personally undecided. So, I will leave it up to you - do you think for your business it is #TimeforTurf? As a client is it time to give turf a chance? MOWERS

Baggies bag a Dennis G34D

Rob Lane, Head Groundsman at West Bromwhich Albion's The Hawthorns stadium, recently chose a Dennis G34D cylinder mower that would help him achieve that all important pitch-perfect-presentation. “I wasn’t good enough to play the game, but I knew I wanted to be involved in football,” says Rob who watched his team, nicknamed the Baggies, from the stands in the 1970s. “That was when I first thought about becoming a groundsman. So, I contacted all the football clubs in the area closest to me, and the only vacancy available was at my childhood club. I jumped at the chance. My whole family are West Brom fans, so it was a proud moment.” Rob embarked on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) which included a day release where he studied sports turf at college. That was in 1988 and he has been at the club ever since. The one-club man is committed to preparing the best pitch possible for the players, the staff, the fans and of course his family, so Rob never cuts any corners. So, when it came to finding a new mower to give the pitch that all important matchday cut, it was a decision he was not going to rush into. “Our previous mower we had for presenting the pitch needed replacing and I looked long and hard at what was available,” he explains. “I just couldn’t look past the Dennis G34D and that was based on our experience with

the Dennis G860 cylinder mower – which is a machine we use a lot here. It is the same height; the same weight and we liked the thought of having two Dennis mowers for the pitch. It would be nice and uniformed.” As Rob says, the Dennis G34D has been designed and built following the same concept as the popular Dennis G860 cylinder mower. Available in three different cutting sizes – 26”, 30” and 34” – the mowers incorporate a large-diameter eight bladed cutting cylinder to cater for a wide range of uses to leave a precision cut. The handlebar design makes manoeuvring easy and the wide adjustment makes it comfortable for all cutting heights. Rob uses the two mowers in conjunction with one another to prepare the pitch. While using cassettes such as the verticutter and the brush on the G860, he will save the G34D for matchdays. “On a Friday before a game we will use the G34D to cut widthways and then on a Saturday morning we will cut lengthways,” he explains. “It provides a fantastic finish every time. We also like the fact that if it is a bit dewy or a bit wet then it doesn’t drop the grass clippings like our old machine used to. It also has a much bigger grass box to get more in and you don’t have to keep stopping to empty it. “I’m very pleased – it is a superbly engineered mower.”

Verge-cutting head gives biodiversity a winning edge Specialist Halifax-based contractor GVA has become the first UK customer for a new, environmentally-friendly mowing head designed to protect the flora and fauna of roadside verges. The ECO 1200 plus head was developed by German manufacturer Mulag and delivered by UK agent, South Cave Tractors. It has now been fitted to the PTO-operated Mulag SB600 suction mower that GVA has been using since 2019. This was also supplied by South Cave Tractors, of Brough, East Yorkshire, as was the Mercedes-Benz Unimog on which it is mounted. The 4x4 vehicle pulls a Harsh drawbar trailer with grass collection box. Green areas from which cut grass has been removed become increasingly nutrient-poor, which in the longer term leads to an uplift in biodiversity among plants and insects. South Cave Tractors Managing Director Tony Levitt explains: “The ‘cut and collect’ set-up being used by GVA was already supporting sustainability by sucking up the cut grass, then scarifying the ground ready for planting with wildflower seeds. “Mulag’s ECO head technology takes environmental compatibility to another level, by extracting considerably fewer bugs than other, more conventional equipment.” GVA will be deploying its Mulag mowing and collection system on motorway and major A-roads throughout northern England this spring, when it becomes a direct supplier of ecology and landscaping works services to National Highways. Biodiversity is a top priority for the Government-owned company, which changed its name from Highways England last year, and would-be contractors are encouraged to demonstrate their ability to deliver environmental gains. The ECO 1200 plus head features a disc mower, ahead of which a mechanical scourer is fitted. The scourer ‘chases up’ insects sitting in the grass before the cut material is sucked up from above. The mower has a 1.2m cutting width and also employs ‘sensor rollers’ that offer reduced ground contact and thereby provide more protection than a conventional pressing roller. The cutting surface of the new disc blades is approximately 50 times smaller than that of a flail mower,

which is more commonly used to undertake such work. As ecology experts have found that cutting heights above 10cm greatly increase the chances of survival for creatures living in and on the grass, the ECO 1200 plus head is designed to cut no lower than this. Tests conducted by the German University of Tübingen’s Institute of Evolution and Ecology confirmed that in comparison with a standard mower, operation of the Mulag ECO 1200 plus results in a reduction of between 20% and 80% in losses of spiders and most insect groups. Importantly, these tests focused solely on the mower and not also the scourer, so the potential benefits of the complete unit could be significantly higher. Tony Levitt continues: “Cut grass that’s left on the ground simply encourages the growth of yet more grass. But if you collect the cuttings at the same time you’ll gradually remove the nitrogen content, so the grass backs off and makes way for wildflowers to come through, especially if the area has been seeded. “Dead grass that’s simply left to rot can also build up the bank of soil over the years. As a result the water cannot run off the road surface during periods of heavy rain, which is an obvious safety hazard for motorists. “There’s another potential environmental benefit too, in that grass that’s been cut and collected in late summer and then left to die away over the winter releases methane. This can then be turned into energy, which is already happening in facilities where they know the grass has been properly cut and doesn’t contain any pollutants. So the more we clean up the sides of our biggest and busiest roads, the more usable the grass will become.” Tony concludes: “With its unique, side-arm concept, the Mulag SB600 cut and collect system is ideally suited to roadside work. Fitted with the new ECO head it can play a key role in promoting biodiversity by helping to establish and maintain ‘corridors’ of wildflowers and encouraging bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects to flourish.” GVA Commercial Director Luke Kendall adds: “Roadside corridors represent a great opportunity for the conservation and protection of insects. This is an area in which GVA already has extensive experience, not least through our work on a Cumbria Wildlife Trust project that entailed the management of habitats for declining wild bee populations. “We highlighted our operation of the Mulag cut and collect mowing system in our successful tender to National Highways – the ECO head is a valuable new tool that will further assist us in meeting its biodiversity targets. We look forward to deploying this impressive technology in support not only of National Highways, but also of other customers.”

demand and energy consumption. While the standard mode provides a performance of 3,500 rpm, the boost mode with 3,700 rpm masters even dense, tall lawns with ease. Eco mode (3,200 rpm) saves users up to 40% energy, covering an area of around 2,800 sqm. Comfortable and safe handling Equally convincing is the comfortable handling - lowvibration, ergonomic features and a reduced noise level guarantee pleasant and quiet operation. While the steering wheel can be turned easily with just one finger, the one-button start, cruise control and STIGA One Pedal Drive ensure intuitive start-up and driving. The tractor stops automatically when the drive pedal is released. The parking brake also activates automatically as soon as the machine comes to a stop, with no need for manual intervention. Using the extended connectivity with the STIGA.GO app and the virtual dashboard, users can always keep track of the current battery status and also adjust the various settings to suit their personal needs. With a low center of gravity of 351 mm, the Swift brings manageability and safety to every cut. The new dual-blade mowing deck is designed for more efficient airflow inside the tunnel and at the blades, which also improves the collection of clippings. The shredded grass is fed reliably, quickly and without clogging into the 170l catcher bag. With the special washing attachment, cleaning only takes a few seconds after the work is done.

POWER TOOLS

Power to the Landscapers

Andrea Stihl's vision to “make life in the outdoors easier” has become a reality and now the STIHL name is synonymous across the professional landscaping industry. Courtesy of STHIL-UK, Maggie Walsh gathers with fellow members of the press at the Environmental Training Centre, Stafford to find out what the German manucturers have in store for 2022 Ever since Andreas Stihl invented the first portable chainsaw in 1926, the STIHL name has stood for revolutionary technology, driven by significant investments in research and development and a singleminded passion for making people’s lives easier when working in nature. It’s because of this that STIHL has been the world’s best-selling petrol chainsaw brand since 1971. Fast forward to 2022 and STIHL proves it has more to offer than just a petrol chainsaw.

Chainsaws

New in and part of STIHL's AP system that offers emission free performance, is the MSA 300 – the manufacturer's most powerful cordless chainsaw. Suitable for felling, cross-cutting, snedding and processing, it offers forestry professionals, arborists and landscapers the power needed for taking on larger cutting tasks.

22

www.landscapermagazine.com

POWER TOOLS Using the AP 500 S battery, it is recommended with a 16” Light 04 guide bar and .325” RS Pro chain for fast cutting. The recommended cutting attachments are identical to the popular MS 261 C-M, with a maximum recommended guide bar length of 18”. Three operating modes limit the maximum chain speed, helping to match the performance to the task at hand and extend the battery run-time. Eco mode limits the chain speed to 24 m/s and is ideal for cutting smaller logs, while the highest performing mode features a 30 m/s chain speed ideal for felling cuts and fast working. Also look out for the top handled MSA 220 T has the equivalent cutting performance of the MS 201a TC-M petrol version, but with the benefits of battery power. It uses a PS3 full-chisel saw chaing to achieve a fast, quality cut. The recommended AP 300 battery delivers 2.1kW of electrical power providing up to 29 minutes of working time and plenty of power for cutting larger sized branches.

Team communication

Perhaps one of most fun gadgets is STIHL's new Avananced ProCOM headset, which offers forestry and landscaping professionals clear and high-quality communication in noisy environments, while offering ear protection. Using intercom mesh technology, up to 16 headsets can link automatically, allowing users to listen and communicate effectively as a team. It has a range of up to 600 m depending on the terrain, however, each headset acts as an amplifier to extend the range even further if more than two headsets are in use. Multiple channels are available for teams working in close proximity, and users may choose the open mic setting for frequent communication, or alternatively, the push-to-talk button can be used instead to minimise background noise. The intelligent ambient mode feature allows the user to clearly hear their surroundings and react quickly to potential dangers such as traffic or passers-by. Ambient mode de-activates automatically when a loud noise is detected, maintaining a high level of protection when it’s most needed.

STIHL expands Kombiengine range The KMA 135 R adds to STIHL’s range of high-performance KombiEngines for professional users tackling tough jobs. The robust and powerful KombiEngine accompanies the KMA 130 R in the range. Featuring a sturdy new battery housing, users can now easily slot in STIHL’s high-performance 36V AP batteries, adding greater versatility to carry out the quick jobs where KombiTool’s are so effective. As well as delivering excellent performance across a wide range of KombiTool’s, the motor requires little-to-no servicing, whilst the easy to clean air filter ensures a long service life and optimum engine cooling. The KMA 135 R has an ergonomic control handle with three level speed pre-selection displayed on an LED panel and infinitely variable speed control on the trigger to perfectly match the KombiTool and the work being carried out. A quick-release coupling allows the splitting of the KombiSystem into two parts for easy transport and storage – and then re-assembled without any tools required. The KMA 135 R is compatible with STIHL’s wide range of KombiTool attachments, including the HT-KM, HL-KM 145º, HL-KM 0º, FH-KM, MB-KM, RG-KM, BG-KM, FCB-KM, BFKM and KB-KM, which are all interchangeable thanks to the straightforward and sturdy connection point. Further ranges of accessories are also available to use with the KMA 135 R, including Shaft Extensions, RTS Harness, Angled Gearhead and Carry Bag. It has an adjustable oil pump, an ergonomic trigger system and a 180° LED display, ensuring the operator always has a clear overview of key information. It is also available as the MSA 220 T-CO – a version with an added extra of an oil sensor display to let you know if the chain oil needs to be topped up. Yet if the task in hand still needs some petrol power, The STIHL MS 881 could be the tool to tackle the most demanding of foresty jobs. With 121.6cc of displacement and 8.6hp/6.4kW output, the MS 881 is not only 19% more powerful than the heavy duty MS 661, but also the only saw in the STIHL line-up to drive a 0.404 pitch chain. With standard bar lengths up to 41” and able to accept guide bars up to 59”, the new saw is the ideal machine to tackle even the most demanding forestry jobs. At the heart of the MS 881 is the STIHL 2-MIX engine that ensures the machine is the only chainsaw in its performance class that meets the strict requirements of the European Euro-5 (EU5) exhaust emission standard. In addition to EU5 compliance, the MS 881 has been engineered with maintaining a great power-to-weight ratio. New construction of cylinders, slimmer sprocket covers, and the development of lightweight components have resulted in an impressive weight-to-power ratio of 1.55Kg/Kw, whilst maintaining robustness and durability.

Long reach

For those hard to reach areas – whether hedges or high branches – Stihl has further options. The HLA 135 long-reach hedge trimmer is ideal for pruning back large hedgerows, and again as has become the norm for Stihl equipment offers a tool that will work well in noise senstive areas. 249 cm in length the 600 mm double sixes and double edged blades will cut through branches up to 18mm thick. Furthermore the cutter bar can be roatated through 145º via the lightweight magnesium gearbox to enable over-head, side and ground-level cutting. If a pruning task is required, the lightweight HTA 135 may come in handy. It comes fitted with a 3/8” PMM3 semi-chisel, anti-kickback saw chain providing precision, high cutting performance and low-pinch tendencies. A branch hook offers stability for a more accurate cut and helps to remove caught up branches easily. It also features a square telescopic shaft that can be quickly adjusted between 285cm and 405cm using the new twist and click adjuster. A square shaft for increased rigidity prevents twisting and deflection, delivering a precise cut even at full extension.

Brushcutters

Whether cutting borders around trees, clearing light scrub in car parks or working through dense grass the STIHL Brushcutter range offers a tool fit for purpose. The low weight FSA 86 R offers an ergo lever handle cutting attachment and a high revving direct drive motor produces 20% more power than predecessors. Furthermore, the power-to-weight ratio makes the tool incredibly easy to use, particularly for line-trimming around boarders and trees, without the need of metal cutting tools or a full bike-handle brushcutter. For harder jobs, the FSA 135 bike handle brushcutter comes with the GrassCut 260-2 blade as standard and has an expected working time of 100 minutes when used with the recommended AP 300 S battery. The FSA 135 R loop handle version comes with an AutoCut 26-2 line head and has an expected working time of 45 minutes when used with an AP 300 S battery. The cordless tools feature a traditional brushcutter layout from the petrol models, with engine, drive-shaft and gearbox, meaning that the FSA 135 can fit metal cutting attachments designed for brush and wood. STIHL's most powerful clearing saw, the FS 561 C-EM boasts an enhanced gearbox with improved sealing and bearing design, and a cutting diameter of 560 mm, ensuring professional users can cover larger cutting areas quickly and easily. In addition, a circular chisel-

tooth saw blade Woodcut 225-24 is fitted as standard. Ignition timing and fuel metering are precisely controlled using the STIHL M-Tronic 3.0 electronic engine management system. External factors such as temperature, altitude and fuel quality are also taken into account by M-Tronic 3.0, resulting in consistent engine performance, efficient fuel usage and excellent acceleration. The FS 561 C-EM can be used with a wide range of STIHL cutting attachments such as shredder blades, line heads, grass-cutting blades or brush knives. Other features include increased crankshaft durability and tougher clutch housing material for improved wear and tear.

Intelligent tool management solutions STIHL has introduced a the new Smart Connector 2 A, enabling professional users to obtain new levels of machinery performance data to a user’s smartphone via Bluetooth. The information relayed includes operating time, working speeds, the status on individual electronic components, ambient temperature and also messages about the status of the machine to name but a few, giving users universal transparency of the machine and its performance. The connector also features a real time clock, meaning the data is collected accurately regardless of how often the connector syncs with a smartphone, so operators can see when and for how long a machine was used. In addition, pressing the button on the Smart Connector 2 A gives a quick indication of the status of the machine via an LED light, and will display green if the machine’s maintenance is up-to-date, yellow if there’s an outstanding job, or red if a machine fault has been detected. All of the machinery performance data is available to view either on the STIHL Connected app or on the desktop STIHL Connected Portal, a one-stop shop for accessing all the maintenance information and upcoming tasks for an unlimited number of machines in the fleet.

ADVERTORIAL FENCING & DECKING

Eco-friendly timber and composite decking solutions Timberworld offers decking solutions to transform garden spaces Whether for yourself or a client, it is becoming an increasingly important part of the purchasing decision to check that products are sustainably sourced, promoting the welfare of our environment. As a business that places great importance on sustainable sourcing, Timberworld ensures that the products supplied to customers has a positive impact on the environment, at market-competitive prices, without compromsiing on quality. Decking is a simple, attractive and great value alternative to building or repairing a patio, and Timberworld's extensive range allows for a choice of decking to fit any vision and budget. Its decking sits alongside a wider range of landscaping products, which includes timber sleepers, fencing, cladding, garden sheds and furniture ranges. With outdoor space limited in the UK's bigger cities, a well-designed deck can add to a property value by up to 10% according to onlinemortgageadvisor.co.uk, as it extends a buyer's perception of the amount of living space. And adding a wooden deck can lead to an 82.8% return on investment. Composite Decking The popularity of composite decking has increased hugely in recent years, but timber has a natural appeal which is also a perfect choice to renovate outdoor spaces. The Composite Prime composite decking range includes a high percentage of wood to give you that natural grain look and feel, without polyethylene base ensuring it's tough against the elements. No need to worry about warping or colour fading. The range is made using certified wood, recycled plastic, UV light absorbers, and anti-oxidants. The most popular range, HD Deck 150, offers a contemporary grooved, dualpattern deck with a lifetime warranty of 10 years, making it a great all-round solution. For a more creative look with 25 years of deck life, the Deck Dual range has a reversible two-sided colour option. While the HD Deck Pro offers extra-wide boards for a premium feel, it's the only 200mm wide composite decking in the UK. Both the HD Deck Dual and HD Deck Pro boards come with a protective ‘capped’ layer over the wood composite core, which prevents mould and mildew from developing and provides an attractive, slipresistant decking solution. An alternative is Timberworld's softwood decking, to help feel one with nature. It is manufactured using

Redwood timber, which is sustainably sourced, machined, and pressure-treated to give the deck added protection against the elements. A natural wood colour, the timber comes in a range of sizes and thicknesses to suit. For extra protection, choose tanalised timber, pressure-treated with clever technology to give the wood effective long-term protection against fungal and insect attacks. The processes uphold Timberworld's environmental credentials, using recycled and biodegradable resources. Anti-slip range For true grip – opt for our Gripsure softwood Anti-slip decking range. Each low-maintenance redwood board is divided with two hardened aggregate non-slip infills to give you that added safety guarantee. These deck boards are perfect for tricky areas such as steps, paths, bridges, pools, and play areas. Safety first, but the decking retains a stylish feel with added reassurance for accessibility.

Gripsure Anti-slip decking.

If longevity, low maintenance, and the most durable option ticks the right boxes - then composite decking wins as it has long-term value and lasts between 10 - 25 years (depending on which product is selected). However, if budget is a key factor in the buying decision, the look and feel of wood appeals more, stay traditional and go for timber decking or simply up-spec to Gripsure for that added safety factor. Bullet point: With over 50 branches across the UK Timberworld are well placed to provide efficient and direct deliveries and offer same day collection services. Futhermore, experts can provide guidance when it comes to deciding on the right products for each project. www.timberworld.co.uk

FENCING & DECKING

Are you galvanised to try steel? In the past, landscapers have only been able to choose between timber or concrete fence post solutions. However, the development of galvanised steel fence posts means that there is now a further alternative. John Abernethie, Managing Director at Birkdale takes a look at the performance, installation and aesthetic benefits of these solutions

Landscapers are always looking for ways to make gardens and outdoor spaces look more attractive. When it comes to specifying a material for fence posts, timber is a popular option. This material is able to complement almost any garden design, due to the authentically natural aesthetic it provides. However, the material’s lack of durability can cause a number of issues. If left untreated, the base of the post can rot within five years, causing the whole structure to weaken and eventually break, meaning replacements are frequently needed. Moreover, with the impact of climate change, extreme weather events are becoming more common.

28

www.landscapermagazine.com

Timber fence posts do not always have the strength to withstand the sheer force of many of the storms the UK increasingly faces – leading to damage and destruction.

Concrete v timber

Aware of these weaknesses, many landscapers opt instead for concrete solutions. A far stronger alternative, concrete is able to resist strong winds and has a far longer functional life expectancy of around twenty years. On the other hand, concrete does not possess the same aesthetic benefits as timber. Rather, due to the bulkiness and colour of concrete posts, this solution

FENCING & DECKING

stands out, and impedes the look of an outdoor space. Furthermore, whilst concrete is very strong, it is also extremely heavy, causing a number of issues when it comes to installation. The weight of the product can put physical pressure on landscapers, increasing the risk of injury and meaning a number of people are required for installation. Transportation to site can also be difficult, as the size and weight of concrete posts limits the number that can be carried or loaded into a van. As such, installation can be a slow, labour intensive and costly process. In addition, although concrete is more robust than timber, it is still prone to chipping and hairline cracks, which can lead to water ingress, causing the structure to weaken and eventually snap.

Galvanised steel

Recently, galvanised steel has been gaining popularity within the fencing market as an alternative that can overcome all these challenges. A highly durable material, this solution will not rot, warp or crack over time, regardless of weather conditions. It also does not require any maintenance, so is a cost-effective option in the long run. Up to 80% lighter than concrete, galvanised steel systems are far easier to install, requiring only one tradesperson. Furthermore, due to their light weight, more posts can be loaded into a van and transported to site in one trip. This also makes the solution ideal for the environmentally conscious, helping landscapers to cut their emissions by minimising journeys to and from site. What’s more, galvanised steel is 100% recyclable at the end of its working life, unlike concrete, which according to The Guardian, contributes to 4-8% of the world’s CO21.

Although a lighter alternative, galvanised steel is still able to match concrete for strength. This was recently demonstrated when the Building Research Establishment Ltd (BRE) strength tested Birkdale’s DuraPost ® system and it was proven to withstand wind speeds of up to 110 mph, the equivalent of 625kg of force. The strength of galvanised steel fence posts is largely due to its impressive strength-to-weight ratio. In the case of DuraPost ®, its manufacturing process ensures that the galvanised steel is cut and cold rolled through a specially made die to create a unique, patented H-section profile. This also means the posts are available in slim line profiles that are less intrusive on existing garden aesthetics. What’s more, galvanised steel post solutions are available in a range of colours, including the popular Anthracite Grey, Olive Grey and Sepia Brown. In this way, these products offer landscapers outstanding design flexibility, helping to enhance the aesthetic of any garden space. Untreated galvanised steel posts are also available, providing a strong, long-lasting product that is ideal for use alongside pre-existing concrete and commercial environments, and at a highly competitive price point to traditional concrete systems. Overall, galvanised steel fencing systems provide landscapers with a modern fence post solution that can harness the benefits of both concrete and timber. In order to maximise these advantages and ensure product quality, it is crucial that galvanised steel systems are sourced from a recognised manufacturer. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/feb/25/ concrete-the-most-destructive-material-on-earth

FENCING & DECKING

Durable weather resistant MDF creates stunning roof terrace and BBQ area A once neglected roof terrace on the top of a luxury private residence in South Kensington, London, has been transformed by Paul Newman Landscapes, using MEDITE® TRICOYA® EXTREME (MTX) in two exciting applications.

The ground-breaking, weather resistant, outdoor MDF panel was used both as an underlay for artificial grass in the garden area and to construct a BBQ unit – both of which have been, and will continue, to be exposed to the elements in all seasons. Working as a landscape designer for over 20 years, Paul Newman, however, is totally confident in his decision: “The reputation of MTX precedes it,” he explains. “I had only heard good things about MTX before using it for the first time on this project. After achieving such great results here, I have used it on many projects with confidence ever since.” Paul Newman Landscapes, based in Hertfordshire, was commissioned to design, build and install all elements of the £85,000 project for the private penthouse residence. It encompassed a leisure garden with privacy screening, a children’s play area and a lounge and dining space, including the BBQ installation.

30

www.landscapermagazine.com

The BBQ unit is unrecognisable as MDF, appearing strong, tidy and finished to a high standard in an RAL navy blue tone. “The BBQ itself is safely self-contained. The entire unit features a granite worktop, while the front and sides are all MTX. There are also stainless-steel inserts running through the structure for support,” says Paul. “It was quite a task,” he continues, “as it was a central London site, on the rooftop of a prestigious building. There are permits to navigate and certain criteria to meet. “In specifying MTX, though, there was no fuss from the council and all plans were agreed to quickly. The panels, supplied by James Latham, were hoisted into place with the use of a mobile crane, and all materials were on site in one day, so we could get to work quickly.” A BBQ is one thing, but laying an artificial lawn over MDF is quite another. Paul explains how this idea came into effect. “MTX is extremely dense and smooth, friendlier to the environment than plastic on account of it producing less waste and the fact that it is manufactured with FSC certified timber. Furthermore, its 50-year guarantee above ground, and even below artificial grass, makes it extremely reliable. These were all the specifications we needed.

“You can shape it, cut it, paint it, drill it – and it will still perform the same. So, we simply drilled drainage holes into 18mm thick panels which were then screwed directly onto joists and the artificial grass bonded to this. “It’s also extremely helpful that MTX is readily available in a range of thicknesses and sizes, which we make good use of. It can be finished in any colour, giving us choice and versatility.” “All in all, this is a panel you can trust in terms of longevity and performance,” Paul surmises. The end result of this project is an opulent roof terrace that encourages relaxation in an ambiance of private calm. A soft colour palette of blues and greys, offset with ambient lighting produce a luxurious, serene space, while the amenity of cooking facilities mean endless summers can be spent up here, away from the bustle below. Bishops Waltham blooms Bishops Waltham in Bloom is a registered charity run by a small group of Trustees, supported by a team of volunteers, who all share a passion and responsibility for planting and maintaining the flower beds, tubs and hanging baskets in Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire. Since 2016 this work has been extended to incorporate two main wildflower areas. A 65m2 roundabout and a 180m2 patch of open ground beside a road junction that leads from the main road through the village. Both areas have now been sown with 500 gms of John Chambers Wildflower Seed Follers Manor Annual seed mix. This is a special mix of wild and cultivated annual species, originally mixed for the award-winning gardens at the stunning Follers Manor in Sussex. John Chambers Wildflower Seed has a 35-year history of supplying native British produced wildflower seed and mixes to rural and urban projects across the UK. Seed is sourced from growers that are long established and stringent in their collection processes; it is cleaned by hand, a labour-intensive process that will only achieve the highest quality standards. The team of specially trained seed cleaners only dispatch the best seed that ensures optimum growth and success no matter the climate or soil quality. Having developed many bedding and shrub beds around the village, the Trustees felt that wildflower areas would add more colour and enjoyment for local

residents while supporting biodiversity and a wider range of pollinators. Therefore, the wildflower project at Bishop’s Waltham was initiated with the larger open area and followed up with the roundabout. The group received sponsorship from the Waltham Society and BW Gardening Club, in addition to a grant from Winchester City Council to fund this initiative. Susan Bircher, one of the Trustees comments: “We initially experimented with different seed mixes and some plug plants, and found the annual based mixes gave much more impact and colour. We did use some perennial mixes to try and reduce the yearly workload as we are only a small group, but that created a problem for us with species like wild carrot taking over and dominating the annuals in both areas. Because of our initial experience we wanted to move back to a mix which gave us real impact for the enjoyment of local residents over a reasonable length of time. When researching options, I saw the John Chambers Follers Manor Wildflower mix and we decided the mix of indigenous wildflowers for wildlife plus the 'extras' of Nigella, California poppies and Coreopsis would give us the 'best of both worlds', and the photos on your website and the Follers Manor website looked very much what we hoped to achieve. And it did. Very successfully. Lots of colour and variety, and we had a lot of very positive feedback from the residents, which was lovely.”

Peruvian fertliser firm seeking UK trading partners GUANORGANICS, exclusive suppliers of guano rich fertiliser, is seeking new retail trading partners in the United Kingdom. Here, we take a look at the history of the company and what it has to offer the British consumer market Established in 2004 GUANORGANIC parent company, the Anglo-Peruvian Trading Company, is a UK based business which specialises in sourcing exceptional products from reputable and experienced producers and exporters in Peru, for their introduction to suitable buyers in the United Kingdom and Europe. Fresh for spring 2022, the company brings its unique blend of 100% organic and sustainable GUANORGANIC fertiliser to the UK market. Made from guano – the excrement of seabirds – GUANORGANIC is rich in essential Potassium, Nitrogen, Phosphorous (NPK 1212-2), sulphur and iodine, with a high calcium content, meaning this environmentally responsible fertiliser provides all the nutrients a plant needs for the production of abundant food-crops and flowers. Easy to apply and safe to handle GUANORGANIC pellets are the perfect choice for both amateur gardeners and professionals committed to sustainable growing. Renowned for its exceptional performance and soil-enhancing qualities, Guano is a well-established ingredient in many well-known brands of fertiliser and is already supplied to large manufacturers of own-brand product in Holland, Germany and France. For the environmentally conscious GUANORGANIC is a great choice over synthetic fertilisers. Consisting of the accumulated excrement and carcasses of birds, bats, and sometimes seals, the organic materials from which guano is composed are heat treated at source to eliminate harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E.coli, before being pelletised for ease of storage and application. Unlike horse or bovine manure it doesn’t need a settling period and can be applied as soon a the pellets are ready. A circular economy spanning centuries It might be relatively new to Britain, but when the Ancient Incas created their amazing circular terraces at Moray, the Sacred Valley of Cuzco-Peru, they utilised Guano for the development of agriculture in what became one of the world’s great high civilisations. Fast-forward to the 21st century and we have a truly sustainable, circular-lifespan product created from the waste materials of local fish and birds. Highly nutritious anchovies from the Peruvian Pacific Ocean provide a consistent, stable diet for millions of seabirds whose

droppings are deposited over many small island and peninsulas off the coast of Peru. Over time these abundant droppings are weathered into an exceptionally potent, natural fertiliser, thanks to the unique weather conditions of coastal Peru, where it seldom rains. Guano is harvested by hand between April and September, well outside the birds’ breeding season of October to March. Each location is harvested every five to seven years, with careful consideration to the extraction schedule to ensure there is minimal to no disruption to the birds, and certainly no harm. This care and consideration is not, of course, limited to the bird kingdom and Anglo-Peruvian Trading Company is committed to providing good working conditions to more than 900 workers who hail from a special region in

SEEDS AND FERTILISERS the highlands of Peru. These invaluable workers apply unique skills to their work with Guano which have been passed down to them over many generations. As a subsidised commercial product, the annual harvesting of Guano is a vital source of income for independent farmers in the highlands and jungles of Peru. As well as offering important socio-economic benefits, the export of Guano serves a dual purpose in the form of good conservation, surveillance and maintenance of the island regions where harvesting takes place. Land of the Condor Peru is an incredibly beautiful and diverse country with a long, rich history that’s steeped in myths and legends. South America’s third largest country (with five times the landmass of the UK), has three distinct geographical

regions: Over 2000km of lowlands and coast, the high Sierra of the Andes and dense forest and rainforest. Abundant in rich soil and with a long heritage of agricultural expertise, Peru has the world’s greatest climate diversity, experiencing 28 of the world’s 32 different climates and the largest biodiversity of plant species in the world. This great diversity has gifted Peru with extensive and varied agricultural land that is perfect for the development of new corps and products. The technical expertise of Peruvian growers and producers has also brought the most efficient irrigation system in the region to their country, along with a very wide variety of exotic products that are more desirable than ever in the United Kingdom and Europe. Peru is an exciting country with unique products and enormous business potential - the market opportunity for further growth is immense.

Colour boost from DLF wildflower seeds In order to meet with the increasing demand for conservation mixtures, DLF Seeds have announced expansions to the Pro Flora wild flower and Colour Boost amenity flower collections, in two brand new mixture guides for 2022. Having recently increased their inhouse production for wild flowering species, a number of new mixtures have been introduced - designed to bring biodiversity and visual impact to even more amenity and agricultural spaces. Wild flowers have long played a vital role in renovation and landscaping projects, improving visual diversity and providing support and conservation for wildlife and pollinating species. With that in mind, DLF have introduced Pro Flora 15 – Pollinator. Pro Flora 15 contain a mixture of native origin wild flowers and fine-leaved grasses, which will thrive in a range of soil types, and produce a prolonged flowering period – perfect for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Also new for 2022 is Pro Flora 16 – Coastal. With many of our coastal areas under threat from human activity and the sea, Pro Flora 16 provides land managers with a mixture for restoring some of these spaces and/or regenerating areas with poor quality land. Containing 20% wild flowers such as Kidney Vetch and Viper’s Bugloss, this new mixture can provide valuable habitat for coastaldwelling insects and invertebrate species. A number of mixtures have also been launched in the Colour Boost collection, designed for maximum floral impact. Skyscraper contains classics such as Cosmos and Zinnia and is created for areas where a taller growing mixture is required to deliver the desired level

of visual impact. As with many of the Pro Flora mixtures, pollinators are at the forefront of species selection for a number of Colour Boost mixtures, with the new Honey Bee & Butterfly mix selecting flowers that will provide both a spectacular display and a valuable nectar source for bees and other pollinating insects. Completing the expanded range is Classical, a mix of blue and white species, ideal for more formal settings. Full details of the Pro Flora and Colour Boost ranges can be found in the new brochures, available on request, or by visiting www.dlf.co.uk/wildflowers

Inspirational groundsman gives seal of approval Ian Darler, Head Groundsman at Cambridge United FC, reveals why he has been using Mansfield Sand for over a decade

The grounds at Cambridge United

Ian Darler has been working at Cambridge United FC since 1979 and is now into his 43rd season at the club. As well as keeping the pitch at the Abbey Stadium in immaculate condition, he is also the stadium manager and up until recently was the match day safety officer. Outside of work, Ian is dedicated to raising funds for various charities and was awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2020 for his achievements. He is held in the highest esteem by his peers in turf management and rightly so, but the ever-modest Ian, claims that his mentor deserves all the credit. “I started as an apprentice greenkeeper in 1976 and I worked under the best boss anyone could ever have,” he explains. “At the time I never appreciated why he was always so strict and methodical, but it has kept me in good stead for 43 years. There is not a day that goes by where I don’t appreciate the time he dedicated to showing me how to do the job properly.” After winning just about every award the grounds industry has to offer, it is safe to say that Ian’s mentor would be beaming with pride. Recognising and praising those who go out of their way for him, comes easy to Ian and in his opinion the world needs a little more of it. “Everybody needs to help others more these days,” he says. “Too many people are quick to moan but not enough to compliment when things are good. The one thing I have done all my life is thank someone, whether it be a person or a company, when they have done something well for me.” Once such company is Mansfield Sand: “I’ve been using their products for over ten years and they are exceptional,” he says.

“The sand we used previously was starting to cause some problems – it was bit too uniformed and was creating a marble effect. At the time I was introduced to Mansfield Sand, and they came out and took some samples. We discussed which products would be best for the pitch and I have used them ever since.” Mansfield Sand has been a long-standing pioneer in the development and production of premium sand-based products and boasts the most up-to-date and advanced equipment currently used across the industry from winter sports pitches, golf courses, bowling greens to all amenity turf areas. Ian relies on a variety of products from Mansfield Sand, as he explains. “We use three sand products. MM40 is used more so at the end of the season as a dressing if we are not taking the pitch up. We use the Fibresand Concentrate for renovations and then we use the 80/20 mix for divots and repairs. “Since using the products on the pitch the drainage has been good, but more importantly the stability has been brilliant. I think the other beauty of working with Mansfield Sand is that they are always available to come and take samples to see what our Fibresand levels are like. “For more extensive work when we are adding gravel bands or something like that in the close season, we use their 2mm-6mm gravel for primary and secondary drainage, because it is some of the cleanest and best gravel I’ve ever seen. “I get a ten out of ten service from Mansfield Sand,” continues Ian. “Everything is always delivered on time, and I couldn’t ask for anymore from the company.”

Royal park aeration

When the Covid pandemic struck in 2020 it naturally had an affect on London's oldest enclosed Royal Park at Greenwich. Covering 74 hectares upon which sightseers can enjoy sweeping views across the River Thames towards St Paul's Catherdral, it drew an increase in the number of visitors in the first year of lockdown. “It was like bank holiday every day,” says Adam Stoter, Greenwich Park’s Technical Officer. “Greenwich Park offered an open-air space when there were few places people could go. The trouble was, the added footfall compounded the growing problem of compaction in and around the tree areas.” There has been a settlement on the site since Roman times, and Greenwich has always had a strong association with royalty. Historic tree areas date from 1660 and 11 original trees from the period can be found in the park. The Royal Parks’ ongoing project ‘Greenwich Park Revealed’ has begun to restore the 590-year-old park to protect and share its historic past. They aim to go above and beyond in tree care and management and it was a natural progression to bring in the specialist services of Terrain Aeration’s Tree Division. The company has been

36

www.landscapermagazine.com

treating tree areas in Royal Parks for many years and, in the case of Greenwich this year, applied their technology across 15,000 square metres. Where there is heavy compaction it is essential to break up the soil at a depth greater than the tree roots, other than the main tap roots which go straight down, to allow excess water to drain away and help stop anaerobic conditions and rotting of the root system. The Terrain Aeration Terralift machine sends a probe to a depth of one metre where compressed air is released to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi). This blast of air fractures the soil and creates fissures, which interlink as the Terralift repeats the process on a grid system of two-metre spacings. As the probe withdraws at the end of the air blast, dried seaweed is injected which sticks to the fissure walls, expanding and contracting with moisture content in the soil to keep the area ’breathing’. In most cases, the area treated will be one-metre inside and one-metre outside the canopy drip line to reach beyond the growing roots, increasing the percentage of oxygen intake and allow maximum drainage. In all, Terrain Aeration treated around 15,000 square metres to help ensure the future of the historic tree areas.
