Landscaper Magazine columnist scoops awards

Garden inspiration from Aura Landscapes

Landscaper Magazine columist Paula Warman and her business partner and husband Mike are celebrating success this season with their business Aura Landscapes. At the BBC Gardener’s World spring event that was held in Beaulieu, Hampshire during the May Bank Holiday weekend, they took home a silver merit award for their ‘Over the Garden Gate’ creation. This was their first ever show garden, which was designed to inspire people to look over the gate and envisage what their gardens can behold. The garden was designed with the mind of trying to blend natural earthy and manmade industrial materials together to create a tranquil relaxing space. Whilst still having an emphasis on wildlife and biodiversity. Using reclaimed materials where possible to lower the carbon footprint. “We wanted to reflect a feel of wild woodland around the borders of the garden, with a central oasis water feature that represents the source of colour and vigour spreading and slowly taking control,” explains Paula. “Its inspiration was from the ancient Chinese wood

preserving technique Sho Sugi Ban. The charring of the wood brings out the texture and its natural beauty. Using old reclaimed timbers and metal it was a space to inspire using old items, reduce carbon footprint and create habitats for wildlife.” The duo also stood on the winning podium for a second time in May at The Marshalls National Awards, which recognises the best in hard landscaping in the UK. Paula and her team took home the award for Best Use of Ethically Sourced Fairstone for a private project they'd worked on in the New Forest, Hampshire. “We are extremely proud to have won our first Marshalls National award for what is a stunning project. It is fantastic to be recognised as a quality contractor in the UK and the whole Aura Landscapes team are proud of this achievement.” says Mike Warman. The Marshalls Register of Accredited Landscape Contractors and Driveway Installers is a national network of independent professional installers. These installers are strictly vetted and monitored by Marshalls to assess that they are meeting high expectations and standards.

Iconic Chelsea garden moves to home of Florence Nightingale The award-winning Florence Nightingale Garden that featured at RHS Chelsea's autumn show in September 2021, has been rebuilt at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. The garden's final destination is fitting since Florence Nightingale established the first professional nursing school in the world at St Thomas' in 1860. Opened on the 202nd anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the garden will provide a place of respite and recovery for patients and staff. The theme of the garden is ‘nurture through nature’ and reflects the life and character of Florence and some of her ideas about the importance of green spaces, light and air in hospital settings. The garden was designed by Robert Myers and sponsored by the Burdett Trust for Nursing to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Florence, and to celebrate the

importance of the nursing profession in the 21st century. It was awarded a silver medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in September 2021. “I can’t think of a better use of our garden design skills than in a healthcare setting, knowing that gardens and green spaces have a demonstrable, positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing. We designed the Chelsea show garden as a restorative space, honouring Florence Nightingale’s principles; we always hoped that it would be rebuilt in the real world,” says Robert. While almost all of the Chelsea Garden’s key features remain, including the signature 60-foot pergola, some design details have been reconfigured to ensure the new layout is suitable for the hospital site. The garden has been rebuilt by landscape contractors Bowles & Wyer.

Green tick for DLF Seeds

DLF Seeds have been recognised as one of the top 20 most ‘Climate Friendly Companies’ of 2021 in a recent list compiled by European Seed Magazine. Particular mention was given to DLF’s RadiMax facility in Denmark - the world’s largest open-field root screening facility - that is leading the way in the research and development of sustainable varieties to tackle one of the most pertinent climate threats, drought. Years before the climate agenda hit the breeding companies, DLF took the bold move of assembling breeders and scientists from across the public and private sectors in the pursuit of advancing seed breeding to suit future climates. Through this consortium DLF built their RadiMax facility, which can test up to 600 plant lines simultaneously in four V-shaped pits, each equipped with a unique irrigation system designed to simulate specific conditions and, in turn, identify the deepest rooting varieties. With more than five years of research now under their belts, DLF have been able to supply turf and amenity customers with varieties with verified deep rooting and drought stress tolerance. A deeper rooting plant is not only better placed to withstand extended periods without water, it delivers a stronger

18

www.landscapermagazine.com

and more stable sward with lower reliance on inputs. This is because the significant root growth enables the grass to better utilise the water and nutrients naturally found in the soil profile, improving overall nutrient and Nitrogen efficiency. Of specific interest to the amenity market is the notable developments with key Fescue and Perennial Ryegrass species which have led to the introduction of more sustainable and drought tolerant mixtures such as Johnsons Sports Seed J Fescue mix for golf. The unique combination of cultivars in this 100% fine fescue blend have been chosen specifically to provide high drought and salt tolerance, resistance to disease and a sward that requires lower inputs of water and fertilisers. The trials at RadiMax also demonstrated how DLF’s 4turf ® tetraploid perennial ryegrass roots faster and deeper when compared to traditional diploid ryegrass. Its rapid root growth and larger root mass makes for a more resilient plant, suited to a wide range of sports turf applications. 4turf ® varieties are incorporated into a number of Johnsons mixtures, including the new Johnson’s J Premier 4Turf, combining 4turf ® tetraploids with traditional perennial ryegrass to create the ultimate winter sport renovation mixture.

Inner-city blues Strategic blue/green thinking will help transform urban landscapes into welcoming realms for all, discovers Greg Rhodes

Sustainability, biodiversity, net zero carbon, greening the grey: words that impact landscapers' business lives increasingly. Those that contractors seek to do business with want reassurances that landscaping projects tick the environmental boxes in the teeth of quickening climate change and concerns over wildlife diversity. Transforming the urban environment into one that engages people more fully remains a complex task, made a might more urgent by lockdowns and their impact on our health and wellbeing. Fresh from presenting at May's UKREIIF (The UK's Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum) conference, Jane Findlay, The Landscape Institute's president, takes a sober stance on the challenges ahead. “Huge issues face the public realm, much of which is owned by big investors. Will they want to spend the money needed to make urban spaces liveable?” she says. Today's largely grey infrastructure, with its inherent heat island effects, must give way to a movement embracing biodiversity net gain and habitat restoration, Jane argues.

20

www.landscapermagazine.com

Leading a charity that 'works to protect, conserve and enhance the natural and built environment for the public benefit', Jane is clear on the road map. “The key is retro-fitting,” she states, “creating green spaces and streets. Many cities have developed around transport, with collars of roads isolating communities. "We need to break down the stranglehold of highways and green up arterial roads with tree planting. University of Manchester research revealed that trees can reduce ground temperatures by about 12°C ." Utilities and roads cannot always take priority says Jane. “Utilities need to be planned strategically. It's time for blue/green, rather then grey, thinking,” she states. Mixed use is so important Jane stresses, especially in today's 24-hour culture and the accelerating trend towards higher density city living. People need to get out and step into nature, to enjoy it and be in the thick of it. “We are in danger of descending into 'green deserts',” she says, “poor quality spaces that fail to fulfill and inspire city dwellers. “Spaces do not have to be at ground level. The public realm can function on roof-tops, and be interconnected."

FEATURE Jane insists that the UK suffers from very poor management strategy of green space "Landscape managers and parks professionals can work collaboratively with clients and those who use green spaces to develop sanctuary areas and solitary places. "If we want nature to thrive in the urban realm, we have to appreciate it and then stand up to protect it. People and wildlife have to learn to live together," she says. Reversing entrenched policy on the public realm can, and has occurred. Jane refers to Sheffield's contracting body, which had felled street trees to cut maintenance costs. The city rethought and stopped the practice. Public outcrys when cherished trees are in danger of disappearing under developments give truth to the notion that quality environments count. “People are highly protective about veteran and champion trees,” Jane notes. When developers daily pore over spreadsheets of numbers, the time has come to put a price on previously intangible assets, such as trees, green spaces and vibrant community places. “A sad state of affairs to have to do it,” says Jane, who references research revealing that street trees can raise residential property values by 12%. That kind of statistic can trigger change faster than any other factor.

“It's time for blue/green, rather then grey, thinking” Worthy sentiments and intentions from city placemakers can fall on fertile ground, however. The £1bn transformation of Stockport town centre, Greater Manchester, for example, is set to blend much-needed housing with business, retail, leisure and green space, a mix of provision Jane believes is critical to realising sustainable communities. Several other major rethinks of the urban environment are pressing ahead around the country. There are still stiff hurdles to overcome though. Matt Baker from Rise Associates, a consultancy that works with local authorities to create greener, more peoplefriendly, high streets, believes one of them is changing a 20th century mindset.

“One of the biggest mistakes of the 20th century was giving up too much public space to the car and some local authorities are still in denial about this,” he argues. “In future high streets will be designed around people and the smart phone. "The towns and cities that are thriving and best positioned to adapt to post-pandemic trends are those that understand this and are prioritising green space and human-scale design,” he adds. Matt refers to Stockton-on-Tees’ decision to knock down the shopping centre and replace it with a riverside oasis as one example, but stresses that winning hearts and minds is key to delivering successful change. “Most of the big policy challenges of our time require behavioural change and strong leadership,” he explains. “I have worked in areas where there is a clear consensus for pedestrianisation and green space, but leaders are afraid of making these changes because of an angry minority on Facebook.” Without a clear vision of urban renewal, many towns and cities will fall further behind, Matt warns. Chris Podmore, partner and co-founder of DEP Landscape Architecture agrees, frustrated by Manchester City's green space policy. Chris who's company specialises in urban regeneration, development and conservation through landscape architecture, planning and land development, is active in an era of huge transformation for the city. “Manchester is short of green space and to redress the balance, the council has a policy of replacing every tree lost with three new specimens. On the east side of the city, Mayfield Park will be the first here for a century.” But he adds roofs do not count in the green equation as the council views public amenity value only at ground level. “Meeting green criteria can prove tricky,” he continues. “One brownfield development site we were involved with had seen 59 trees removed, which required 150 new ones to be planted - incredibly difficult to achieve. "When net biodiversity gains and the multitude of services and utilities that cannot be removed are considered, along with the fact that everything is value engineered within the existing budget, landscaping can be the last thing on the list." However, Covid has made a huge difference to thinking about city landscapes he claims. "Covid was definitely positive in terms of wellbeing and appreciation of green space, raising the bar for providing external works and landscapes, giving designers the opportunity to create far more green space but meeting the challenges and delivering the benefits is proving really difficult." Returning to biodiversity net gain in cautious tone, Chris adds: "it's a riddle to be solved at every site and is being forced on planners and developers. Achieving it is a complicated equation and is simply not always feasible." Continued on Page 22.

Urban irrigation

Reclaim and reuse of city land by repurposing buildings and 'greyscapes' ranks high in the thinking of Paul Jeffery of Waterscapes Ltd, which installs controlled landscape irrigation systems, across the UK. “Landscape Architects design the spaces and we work with them to advise on the most appropriate irrigation method and products, which includes rain and moisture sensors to manage water quantity applications to offset evaportranspiration from the soil or turf,” explains Paul, who reveals that the company has just become a BALI-approved supplier. Partnering large landscape contractors, Waterscapes' scope and diversity of projects using Rain Bird technology reflect the scale of demand for irrigation needed to retain the quality of urban environments. Although demand is in greater in London, the company has installed systems across the country in North Yorkshire, Liverpool and Leeds, to Bristol, Farnham and the southern counties. In Brighton, irrigation is nourishing several planted terraces at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, while seafront investment in Folkestone involving building new luxury apartments and private gardens will see Waterscapes install systems. Trees in the urban landscape are particularly vulnerable to climatic stressors. Those around the City's iconic Gherkin are intelligently irrigated, as is the Walkie Talkie's Sky Garden. “We can work directly for consultants, landscape contractors or the main contractor,” Paul confirms. “Water is a scarce resource and it's crucial that systems only irrigate the right areas, avoiding overthrow onto hard landscape such as pathways. “Remote accessing and control via a cloud system allows us to apply water at the most convenient times of day, whilst monitoring and reacting to any changes or issues rapidly,” he adds. Water quality feeding the green landscape is a factor suppliers such as Waterscapes have to

Landscape products and services provider Green-tech work closely with landscape architects and designers on schemes across Britain that are leading the drive to sustainable, people-friendly communities and environments. “We need more trees in the urban realm,” states Alasdair Innes in their specification team. One of the biggest challenges is to create optimum growing conditions for them in towns and cities. “Urban tree pits containing geo-cellular units, which support the paving above while protecting the soft, organic topsoil below, are usually specified as part of any hard-landscaping scheme. Manchester's Great Ancoats Street and

consider, not only because dissolved salts may affect healthy growth but also to keep the delivery system functioning efficiently. “Spraying hard water on to foliage can leave salt deposits when it dries,” Paul explains, “so softening makes sense, either by a salt base-exchange system or electronically, using magnetic systems to prevent calcium carbonate attaching to the supply pipes. Soft water also allows the small apertures in pipework to remain free of solids buildup so they can irrigate efficiently.” Preparing to work on arguably one of Waterscapes' most prestigious projects - Google's new headquarters in the capital, embracing roof gardens and lawns - Paul notes the importance of choosing a system geared to site conditions. “Clever, controlled use of irrigation technology is key,” he says, “whether a cycle and soak application to suit soil type, planting or aspect or, in the case of a park, best applied when the area is not in use. Part of our role on any project is to train the operators and maintenance staff on the facilities management aspects.” Draining irrigation systems in winter, then checking systems in spring and during the summer operating season, helps keep everything ship shape, conducted by the company's 10-strong maintenance team as part of a programme of interim visits that also includes cleaning filters and testing pipework integrity for leaks. Encouraging an urban realm replete with wildlife diversity is important, and accurate watering can be a vital tool in its maintenance. Edinburgh’s Bristow Square are recent examples where we supplied them,” Alasdair says. Increasingly popular, and more frequently forming part of planning conditions, Green roofs are key to sustainability aims. “They add biodiversity, save on both heating and cooling costs, as well as slowing and reducing the water flow into our storm drains," Alasdair notes, “they can even increase the lifespan by up to three times over an exposed flat roof”. “We've undertaken a lot of work around trees in the urban landscape,” he adds. “Things are improving but there's still a long way to go.” Figures supporting a reduction in Urban Heat Island gains from the green canopy may differ, although they

all point one way - street trees cool urban settings. Research conducted in Krakow, Poland reported nothing short of staggering temperature differences when comparing tree-lined streets with those without them - half the level in fact (23°C and 46°C). The study recorded even starker contrasts when car bodywork temperatures were tested - 27°C against 61°C. Awareness is building about the benefits of naturebased solutions, Alasdair argues, amid some sobering statistics about the sparsity of canopy cover across the country. "The i-Tree 2016 canopy survey of 265 towns in England revealed just 8% hit the Nature-Based

Biotecture designs, supplies, installs and maintains sustainable vertical green infrastructure, providing full after-care. Its modular hydroponic BioPanel living walls system can be applied to both large- and smaller-scale projects across commercial, educational, leisure and healthcare sectors, blending intelligent water management with remote sensing technology, allowing it to keep plant health in differing climates long term. “It can be retrofitted as part of a façade refurbishment and incorporated within new buildings as the integral rainscreen cladding element,” explains managing director Richard Sabin. Schemes at London's Edgware Road Tube Station, New Street Square and King’s Cross, installed in 2011 and since maintained by Biotecture’s horticultural and oper-ations team, typify the importance of active upkeep. “The systems can be retrofitted as part of a facade refurbishment, as at Edgware Road Station, “or

Solutions recommended 30% cover, although a few towns, such as Farnham in Surrey at 45%, are well above the 19-20% national average." The NBS '3-30-300' rule is a popular yardstick against which we can gauge urban landscapes. “Can you see at least three trees from your home, does your neigh-bourhood enjoy 30% canopy cover, and do you live 300 metres or less from your nearest green space." Despite the urgency to develop appealing, embracing landscapes for the public, some factors weigh against progress, as Alasdair notes. “Factors such as the police-backed Secured by Design initiative or even insurance conditions, can sometimes be detrimental to our urban landscapes; for example viewing perimeter trees, or even park benches and shrubbery as risks, rather than benefits. “Everything we do as a company has the health and improvement of our green assets at its core. Landscaping must be viewed as an integral part of a project right from the start, an asset that has value, not an inconvenient add-on at the end. And nowadays, when so much is value engineered to reduce costs, putting a financial value on green assets and infrastructure has never been more important than right now." integrated into the building fabric in new-build projects as the rainscreen cladding element,” says managing director Richard. “The remotely monitored hydroponic system controls water usage and nutrient delivery to provide a stable, predictable rootzone. “The wall system construction specification is fully and independently validated by the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT) and Evolve Structural Engineers,” he adds. The Edgware Road Tube Station wall, which holds 14,000 plants of 15 species, was funded by the government’s Clean Air Fund, Richard explains. “Its effect on air quality was monitored by Imperial College, who assessed the chosen plants for their ability to remove particulates. With smaller leaves and a variety of textures, we chose them because they filter PM10 traffic fume particulates better,” he adds. The 240m2 wall, fitted under the King’s Cross Central Development plan, serves as visual screening for gas utilities “and remains an important element of the public realm more than a decade later,” Richard notes. "Designed to reflect the changing seasons, the dynamic planting scheme is populated by pink, purple and white flowers in summer, while fragrant lavender attracts bees and other pollinators." All three schemes appear proof that preserving the vision of urban realm planners relies on sustained aftercare. Biotecture's operations support team and horticulturally-led maintenance programmes "proactively tend a growing list of living walls sized from 10m2 to 2,300 m2 totalling 60,000m2," Richard concludes.

LANDSCAPER’S CIRCLE

Addressing recruitment This month we are talking recruitment and what a hot topic that is in the landscaping industry! As school leavers prepare to navigate the world of work this summer, Paula Warman asks what can we do to encourage them into the horticulture and landscaping industries? The first point of call in recruiting within landscaping, is raising awareness of the opportunities within this sector and what type of career one can expect to have within the industry. The intitiative Go Landscape are doing this well. Backed by British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) it is an education, skills and careers initiative designed to inform and inspire. Visit their website https://www.golandscape.co.uk for more details. As employers we should be looking to hiring school leavers, apprentices and creating work experience opportunities. This is the best way to train new employees in your company’s way of working and continues to help reduce the skills shortage issue that we continually experience. How do we find these apprentices and staff in general? There are many ways to market opportunities within your landscaping business: 1. Contact colleges – look for colleges in your area that offer horticultural studies and ask if they have any students looking for apprenticeships and/or work experience 2. Local councils – often run work experience schemes that you can put your name down for to offer work experience for those students interested in a career in the industry 3. Utilise recruitment sites – such as Indeed and Horticruitment to name a couple. Simply create a good job advert and post! 4. Social media promotion – promote job vacancies via your website and social media channels, its free!

5. Internal opportunities - Think about the staff you have already in your business and ensure there are opportunities for them to grow and develop. 6. Referral – do any of your existing team know of anyone looking for a new career path or reach out to friends, family and contacts for referrals. Perhaps offer an incentive to your staff for a sucessful referral. 7. Planning – is a critical part of the recruitment process. Looking at the projects booked in and potential projects in the pipeline will show you exactly what skill set you need to grow your business. How do you make sure you get the right candidates on board? Allow three months as a minimum to find the right person for you and your business. Most importantly ask the right questions – we have a set of free candidate screening questions to use in your business at thelandscaperscircle.co.uk/recruitment In summary, I have listed 7 ways to look at recruiting and promoting the opportunity you have. Unfortunately, the landscaping industry is notorious for having staff issues but I am certain that with more promotion of landscaping as a career in schools and colleges and apprenticeships continuing to be popular, then the skills gap will reduce over time. As landscapers and horticultural businesses we just need to continue attracting and developing passionate individuals in the landscaping field and encourage and help them flourish. If you want help with any recruitment marketing and/or growing your landscaping business, get in touch with me at The Landscaper’s Circle. My vision is to support and mentor as many horticultural businesses as possible through membership of The Landscaper’s Circle.

KAR UK offers peace of mind Lincoln City FC Head Groundsman Craig Housley can now sleep soundly thanks to a new Hunter irrigation system supplied by KAR UK. Craig, who has been at Lincoln City since September 2020, reveals how his previous irrigation system caused many sleepless nights. “Our old system had been in for about 20 years and it was so difficult to work with,” he explains. “The sprinklers were constantly breaking down; we just couldn’t trust the system to work overnight and there were parts of the pitch that were getting heavily watered and some parts that were not getting any water. Even on matchdays we would be back and forth manually changing the irrigation from the control point. It was a total nightmare.” At the end of last season, a renovation and new pitch construction, proved the ideal opportunity to explore the possibility of installing a new irrigation system. “It seemed like the perfect time and after being highly

recommended, we got in touch with KAR UK. Mike McDonnell (UK sales manager) came to visit us at the training ground. He talked me through the different Hunter products, the installation process, the various programmes and how we could control the system on a mobile phone,” says Craig who based on what he heard decided to use KAR UK. KAR is the largest UK wholesaler of irrigation equipment and has long-term relationships with every irrigation product manufacturer of note. The company is also an integral distributor of Hunter Industries irrigation equipment. Following the meeting KAR UK supplied Craig with a variety of Hunter I-80 and TTS-885 rotary sprinklers and the innovative ACC2 controller, with Centralus Software. Engineered for sports turf, the I-80 is built with a robust, dirt-tolerant gear drive that offers the highest torque output of any rotor in the commercial sphere, and extends a radius range from 11.3 to 29.6 meters. The I-80 features a wide range of highly efficient, dual-trajectory, wind-fighting nozzles for highly efficient performance in a range of applications. It also provides total top serviceability (TTS) via its integrated, surfacemounted snap-ring for no-dig easy maintenance. Craig had eight I-80 sprinklers installed through the centre of the pitch and sixteen TTS-885’s on the pitch surrounds. The renovation, pitch construction and installation of the irrigation system was all undertaken by leading contractor Fineturf. “There is not one blade of grass that doesn’t get watered now which is exactly what we were looking for,” he says. “We wanted the pitch watered evenly because the manager is trying to play quick, one-touch football. The Hunter sprinklers have enabled us to achieve this now. Not only are we covering a much bigger area, but we have definitely saved water because we can manage it a lot better.” Craig also lavished praised on his new Hunter ACC2 controller. This allows users, through the Cloud Based Centralus Software, to change settings, view forecasts, and receive instant notifications of important system alarms — all without costly and time-consuming travel and site visits. “It’s great for the pitch but perhaps not so good for my personal life,” jokes Craig. “We have cameras set-up at the stadium so when I’m at home I’m aways keeping an eye on the weather. To have this kind of control over the irrigation no matter where I am is brilliant. At any time, I can see how much water is going on; I can look at the moisture settings and turn sprinklers on and off whenever needed. “For me the biggest bonus is never having to worry about irrigation again - this new Hunter system has given me a peace of mind for sure.”

Emitter conserves water on green walls and slopes Rain Bird's new Xeri Bug™ pressure compensating emitter with Check Valve (XBCV) reflects the company's commitment to the development of products designed to conserve water. When drip irrigating green walls, sloping landscapes or raised potted plants, a major issue has always been the escape of water and over watering at the base of the installation. Xeri Bug XBCV overcomes these problems, holding back up to three metres of water by simply snapping shut and then keeping the dripline charged and ready for the next irrigation cycle when the pump or water source is stopped. Using the Xeri Bug XBCV emitter is simple. Its self-piercing barb is designed to push quickly into the dripline tubing without the need for a hole punching tool. The emitters can be positioned exactly where they are needed next to any plant to provide irrigation where it is needed at the root base. Versions with flow rates are 2.0, 4.0 or 8.0 litres per hour are available and the pressurecompensating diaphragm ensures uniform delivery through a consistent flow from 1.0 to 3.4 bar. The Xeri Bug XBCV has a compact, robust and durable design. It is manufactured from highly inert

materials that are resistant to chemicals and furthermore its UV-resistance will also extend the life of the emitter. By retaining its charge of water and immediately beginning irrigation, it will reduce cycle times. The selfflushing action prevents clogging and reduces calcium build-up on the inlet. Products are colour coded for flow rate identification. Rain Bird's complementary Point Source Emitter Calculator calculates the Daily Plant Water Requirement (PWR) providing the number of emitters required to irrigate each individual plant, and the suggest the run time for any point source drip irrigation project.

GKB helps tackle challenging grounds A fleet of orange and blue is forming for the team at Premiership Lawncare, as continued investment sees a bank of equipment from GKB Machines trusted to deliver projects for a growing range of sports turf customers. In the last two years, owners Josef Farrow and Mark Pettit have purchased a Deep Tine Aerator (DTA), SP100 topdresser, Dragmat and, most recently, a GKB Combinator – enabling the team to expand their range of services to both football and cricket clients. “Investment in equipment has been critical and that’s where our relationship with GKB has gone from strength to strength,” explains Josef. Recognising the requirement for a bigger, more robust aerator to cope with the demands of challenging ground, Premiership Lawncare became one of the first contractors in the UK to purchase a Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) almost two years ago. “Our DTA 160 is a fantastic machine! As the name suggests, it works to depths of up to 12” to break through compaction and is used on all of our football work, including some council pitches which could certainly pose a problem for machines that are not as well-built as the DTA,” says Josef. “Impressed with that and the service and support we received, we then purchased the GKB Dragmat and an SP100 Sandspreader which fits on the back of our Toro Workman and has been a really great investment. We

can get 1.5 tonnes of sand in there, and thanks to the wide conveyor, heavy duty discs and easy adjustment we get a really accurate, fine spread.” The latest addition to the fleet is a GKB Combinator, delivered in May 2022 and put straight to work on a football renovation project. “With our sports-turf client base ever-increasing we decided the time was right to purchase our own machine to strip surfaces and after comparing the options, the GKB CB120 came out on top. In its first week it removed around 80 tonnes of vegetation which is impressive for a machine that’s only 1.2m wide!” Josef adds: “One particular feature which is great for us is the ability to swap out the fraise blades in our CB120 for scarifier blades, which means we can use it to remove OM accumulations in some of our cricket squares.

Trilo S4 delivers multi-purpose performance A Trilo S4 has proven its credentials as a multifunctional machine without compromise for the team at Richmond Golf Club, Surrey. Purchased initially to assist with collecting leaves from more than 3000 trees around the parkland course, the interchangeable heads and ability to flail cut and scarify has been a bonus for year round maintenance. Bought from dealers Ernest Doe, the S4 was a

straight replacement of another Trilo unit – the Trilo SG700 – which, as course manager Les Howkins explains, had been a workhorse at the London club for over 20 years. And now the S4 is proving just as valuable. “The Trilo S4 is an ideal size for us,” says Les. “It features a large 4m3 hopper to collect large quantities of material but is compact enough overall to easily navigate our relatively ‘small’ 104-acre course. It is equipped with the brush head for leaf clearance between early September till Christmas, by the time the Oaks have dropped.” Come the spring, the brush is swapped for the flail head for the quick cut and collect of acid grassland – an issue for Les and the team on the carry areas between the tees and the fairways. “This causes long, wispy growth which we cut down once a year using our S4, says Les. “We then switch the flail out for a scarifier head to thin out these areas before the new season begins to prevent any thick, matted growth.” “With a lot of machines that are billed as ‘multipurpose’ you find they’ll do one job really well, and not perform on the others but the S4 does all three superbly,” concludes Les.

ISEKI IQ scores highly at Letchworth Golf Club Daniel Spencer, Head Greenkeeper at Letchworth Golf Club, has praised the reliable ISEKI TG6507 for its performance and versatility, adding that the IQ gearbox was a big factor in his decision to purchase the unique compact tractor. Located on the edge of England’s first ever Garden City, Letchworth Golf Club is set in beautiful undulating countryside, which is renowned for its firm fast greens and tight tree lined fairways. The 18-hole parkland course was extended and updated in 2003 to its present form and length, and it is an on-going improvement process, guided by renowned course architects, arborists and ecologists. Head Greenkeeper Daniel Spencer inevitably plays an integral role in shaping the future of the club. First and foremost, though, Daniel’s priority is keeping the course in impeccable condition and to achieve this, it is essential that he has the right tools for the job. “The time had come to replace our old tractor,” explains Daniel when discussing equipment. “We needed something reliable which would allow us to combine our existing implements such as the aerator, the leaf collector, and the blower. We looked at a lot of options and decided that the ISEKI TG6507 would be the best fit for us.” Ideal for high specification aeration and turf maintenance on sports turf, the TG is the most advanced tractor in the ISEKI range with 40-67hp engines. Features include a water-cooled 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder diesel engine with displacement of up to 2,434L, an engine performance from 40 – 67 HP, hydrostat with electro servo control, Q models with innovative IQ dualclutch gearbox and intuitive operating controls. “One of the main reasons, we went for this tractor was because of the IQ gearbox, which gives us a larger

selection of gears,” continues Daniel. “The auto PTO is a huge benefit because when we get to the end of a run, when spiking for example, the PTO shuts off by itself, we turn the tractor around, lower the spiker back down and the PTO restarts again. “In addition, the lift capacity is a great feature - being able to lift over 1.5 tonnes is huge for us.” As Daniel says, users of the TG6507 benefit from the innovative dual-clutch IQ gearbox, combining the ultimate comfortable automatic operation with the advantages of manual gear changes. Specific to the IQ range of TG tractors the Headland management controls are also perfect when working with turf maintenance implements. The PTO Stop/Start function allows you to stop the PTO when the link arms are raised for ease of operation. PTO Stop in reverse lifts the arms to a pre-set height if reverse gear is selected to prevent any damage to implements. These are fully adjustable. Also impressing Daniel is the TG6507’s superior lift capacity of up to 1600kg, offering users the opportunity to run implements without the need to increase the size or horsepower of the tractor. Daniel further explained how the ISEKI tractor fits into his maintenance programme. “Most of the time the tractor has the spiker on it, certainly at this time of year because we are frequently spiking tees, fairways, greens, and approaches. We spike a lot in the summer too and when we hire a scarifier, this will also be attached to the tractor. In autumn we have the leaf collector on there, as well as being able to swap over quickly to the blower when we need it. “Reliability wise, the tractor has been brilliant. It has done everything we wanted it to, and I would highly recommend it.”

Quartix launches EV planning service Quartix, one of the leading global suppliers of subscription-based vehicle tracking systems has launched of Quartix EVolve, a new service designed to help companies manage their transition to electric vehicles. It uses a fleet’s recent GPS data to suggest the most feasible electric vehicle migration plan and a list of charging point installations needed. The service takes the latest public information about EV vehicles and chargers, and then uses a sophisticated AI solution to create a set of recommendations based on a fleet’s trips,

types of vehicles and distances travelled. The result is a comprehensive recommendation which outlines the potential impact on Total Cost of Ownership, as well as emission reductions and fuel spend savings. Customers will also see a ‘best matched vehicle’ list, fully customised to their unique fleet requirements, as well as a list of suggested charging installations points and types of chargers. EVolve gives fleets the confidence and knowledge to make a successful transition to electric vehicles. “I am delighted to offer EVolve to our customers. This tool will help fleets de-mystify the transition to electric vehicles and enable them to make key decisions based on their own real-world telematics data,” says Quartix CEO Richard Lilwall. Customers have reacted well to the new service. Currently businesses invest a great deal of time manually creating EV roadmaps, as it involves pulling data from many different sources, and many are not making use of real fleet data due to the sheer volume and complexity of data gathering. Soon after an initial assessment is carried out, the information quickly becomes out of date. EVolve removes these barriers; it is simple to use, always up- to-date, and priced to enable fleets to run the report as often as needed.
