Days are getting longer, and while the chilly mornings are with us still, warmer temperatures will soon be here marking the start of spring. With the “to do” list mushrooming as we get ready for the growing season ahead, now perhaps is a good time to check out the latest machines available to make light of some chores. This month we take a peek at compact tractors – offering solutions for those with larger outdoor spaces to manage (see page 24). And as the spring grass begins to flourish, mowers start to emerge from the sheds – our mowers feature on page 26 and 28 introduces some groundbreaking battery and electric powered ride ons to help achieve the perfect cut.

Our business mentor Paula Warman is also gearing up for the months ahead and has some useful advice on how to invest in the best tools suited for your business and also looks at the pros and cons of hiring or buying higher priced items. See page 34.

Also in this issue Greg Rhodes reports on the affects compaction can have on tree health on page 20. Estate managers, park grounds teams and some working in sports and grounds management will be managing tree health within their jobs. Surface compaction from heavy footfall and waterlogging takes it toll on the root systems and if ignored can have a devastating effect on the tree. Greg speaks with compaction specialists Terrain Aeration and Bartlett Tree Experts to discover ways to lessen the stress.

And finally, as we continue to tackle an ever changing climate and the threat of drought and water shortages, Paul Jefferey at Waterscapes offers solutions on page 36 to help keep our landscapes blooming.
