FACTS ABOUT ROMERIKE
MUNICIPALITIES Romerike, from Old Norwegian Raumariki, ‘the realm of the Raumar’, in Akershus county consists today of 13 municipalities. The northernmost part of Enebakk, which today is part of the Follo region, was along with Odalen traditionally considered part of Romerike. As of october 2012, Romerike has 259.012 inhabitants, living on 3.806 square kilometres. The relatively flat topography makes the region a bountiful farming area. The rivers Vorma and Glomma conflux at Nes in Romerike.
Municipalities Aurskog-Høland In Aurskog-Høland you will find rich in opportunities for outdoor activities and nature experiences. Vast forest areas, gorgeous lakes and ponds providing a host of activities both in summer and winter. The opportunities for trips and hikes are many, and most villages and settlements have a network of public hiking trails. There are several popular bathing spots, and in the winter several ski trails are laid out at several locations throughout the municipality. In Aurskog the Aur rectory is protected as a cultural heritage site. Eidsvoll Situated at Romerike’s extreme north, Eidsvoll has diverse hiking terrain ideal for trips on foot and skis. Skreikampen and Mistberget are the municipality’s most elevated points. Eidsvoll has a special place in Norwegian railway history; Norway’s first railway, inaugurated in 1854, terminated at Eidsvoll.
Fet Named from Old Norwegian fit, ‘lush meadow by water’, Fet is idyllically situated east and north of Lake Øyeren. The terrain along the lake is made up of cultivated sand and clay sediments, which further east eases into hilly forests. Northern Europe’s largest inland delta forms where the river Glomma meets Øyeren, providing a nature preserve with unique flora and fauna. Gjerdrum Gjerdrum is situated in the western parts of the Romerike plain. The agricultural areas reach from Leira River westwards to the eastern ridge of the Romerike Hills. The area’s distinctive feature are the ravines, reaching from 110 to 205 meters above mean sea level. Hurdal Hurdal is a delightful place for those who enjoy sports and outdoor activities, both in summer and in winter. Here you’ll find Hurdalsjøen, Lake Hurdal, rich in fish and beautiful beaches. We can also offer a number of hikes and excursions, whether you’re walking or cycling. How about a horseback ride through the forest? There is also Hurdal Skisenter, a ski resort with 10 slopes and 4 lifts, Romerike Bakkesenter (a ski jump centre), as well as prepared ski trails across the entire municipality. The ski trails are connected all the way to Eidsvoll and continue as far as Nordmarka. The Spark (Kicksled) World Championship was held on 9 February in 2013. With 92% of the municipality covered by woods and plains, Hurdal is one of Norway’s most forested municipalities, with plenty of evergreen forests. In the Fjellsjøkampen nature reserve you can hike to Fjellsjøkampen – the highest point in Akershus at 812 metres above sea level. Vesleelvfossen is the highest waterfall in Akershus and has a free fall of about ten metres. Hurdal offers a variety of conference centres as well, making it a place for work, pleasure and recreation in beautiful natural settings – just one short hour from Oslo and 25 minutes from Gardermoen Airport.
FACTS ABOUT ROMERIKE
Lørenskog Motorway and railway link Lørenskog westwards to Oslo and eastwards to the rest of Romerike. The oldest archaeological discoveries in this hilly landscape date back some 5000 years. Østmarka, laden with footpaths, ski trails and lakes invite to year-round use, and the Losby area has evolved into one of the Oslo area’s major destinations. Nannestad Winding trails in dramatic ravines and diverse fauna along streams and rivers – Nannestad’s scenic cultural landscape is situated between the airport and the Romerike Hills. Miles of well-prepared ski trails in fields and forests, exiting forest roads and marked hiking paths make trips on foot or bike events to remember. Nannestad’s nature is unique, wild and diverse. Nes Among lush grain fields and deep forests, Norway’s two largest rivers, Glomma and Vorma, meet in Nes. Here, people have lived for appr 3000 years. When Christianity was introduced in the 12th century, a church was built at Nes Farm. The church burnt to the ground and was re-erected, but after another fire in 1854 it was left in ruins. In 1912, it was decided to keep the ruins and maintain the churchyard for coming generations. Nittedal Nittedal’s landscape stands apart from the other municipalities on the Romerike plains. Nittedal is a narrow valley situated below and between forest-clad hills. The valley floor is dominated by agriculture. The Nitelva River is the spine of the valley, as it winds and falls southwards from Lake Harestuvannet on its way to Øyeren. When the river is flowing low, it even allows canoeing. Rælingen Østmarka and Øyeren, wilderness areas vital to the district, both provide a strong foundation for an active outdoor lifestyle. Several of the highest peaks in the area
are in Rælingen, and are popular destinations. Marikollen ski resort has several slopes, a beginners’ slope for children and a warm lobby with a cafe. There is also a cross-country skiing stadium with access to a lit trail, as well as a skating rink. Årnestangen, part of Nordre Øyeren nature reserve, is the habitat of over 260 registered species of bird, making the site a favorite among birdwatchers. Worldrenowned artist Olav Christopher Jenssen grew up in Rælingen, and a collection of his work can be seen at Rælingen city hall. Skedsmo Enjoy everything from exciting culture and history to high technology and visions of the future. Skedsmo offers everything from shopping to art, culture, getting out and about, sport and leisure opportunities. With some of the country’s most attractive workplaces and a good living environment in beautiful natural surroundings, Skedsmo has a great deal to offer. Sørum This municipality, at the heart of Romerike, is criss-crossed by the rivers Leira, Rømua, Åa and Glomma. The waterways have been used by people since early historic time, and Sørum is laden with archaeological finds and burial mounds. Opportunities for enjoying the outdoors are plentiful in Sørum, webbed with trails and forest roads. Many trails are marked for hiking, and the rivers are a delight for paddlers. Ullensaker 40 km north of Oslo, Ullensaker is well set up for outdoor life. The flat landscape with its net of trails and forest roads is ideal for riding bikes or horses. The landscape along the ravines and some lakes can be dramatic. Romerike Landskapsvernområde is a ravine with dense broadleaf vegetation. The largest burial mound in Scandinavia, Rakni’s Mound, lies in Ullensaker. With several preserved old roads and treks, Ullensaker is still a logistic hub with major railways and roads, and of course Oslo Airport.

PILGRIM ROUTE
A day-trip through the Medieval landscape Join the pilgrim trail for a day through the cultural landscape of Ullensaker. Close to Oslo and Gardermoen international airport, yet within a beautiful agricultural landscape, visiting one of the most spectacular Early Medieval monuments of Northern Europe. Start the trip by half an hours train journey from Oslo to Kløfta station. At Kløfta station, turn east through the railway underpass, and follow Kongsvingerveien until you join the pilgrim trail at Galgehaugen (the gallow’s hill). Turn north along the pilegrim trail. After one kilometre walk you are aproaching Ullensaker church. The earliest recorded church at this place was built during the 12th century. The stone church was dedicated to the Norwegian patron saint Olav Haraldsson († 1030) and St. John the Baptist. After a mudslide destroyed the church in the 15th centruy, a wooden stave church was erected in its place. This structure was replaced in 1768 with a larger, corner-timbered church that survived until a fire in 1952. The present church is designed by the famous Norwegian architecht Arnstein Arneberg. Arneberg included construction elements of the three earlier churches in the building. These appear in the silhuet of the church at different angles. A statue of the archaengle Michael can be seen above the door. Acording to Snorri Sturlasson, Chritisanity was introduced in these parts of Romerike after the battle of Nitelva, c. 1020, where Olav Haraldson conquered the local Raumar. Several churches at Romerike are dedicated to St. Olav. The pilegrim trail continous north from Ullensaker church, until you cross the highway and railway-line and approach the farm of Ullern (approximately 2.5 kilometers). In bygone years, Ullern functioned as a main-road coach station. The trail follows Kjerkevegen through the underpass and left (due south-west), then turns right at Asperveien. From this point the trail follows one of the oldes known routes between Oslo and Nidaros. The walk goes through a varied terrain of ploughed fields and woodland. After 2 kilometres you approach the farm of Børke. Several rich grav-finds from the first centuries AD have been made in the area. Up ahead lies Hovin church. The place-name Hovin suggests the presence of an ancient power centre and a focal point for pre-Christian cult. You are now at the heart of the early medieval Romerike, the petty-kingdom (riki-) of the Raumar. After conversion to Christianity, a church was erected here. The present
church is a corner-timbered cross-chuch, dedicated in 1695. The Hovin farm was one of the largest landed properties at Romerike during the middle ages. The majority of the land was in church possesion. Continue along the road past the school and turn right on Ljøgotvegen; literally “the public road”. Further ahead lies one of the most impressive monuments of 6th century Northern Europe; Raknehaugen (Rakni’s mound). The 15 meter tall barrow is constructed from sand, earth and 75,000 lengths of timber. Probably, the building of the monumnet took the concerted efford of 500 people over 6 months. You have a good view of the landscape from the top of the mound. A levelled cemetary of smaller viking age mounds have been documneted on the west side of the barrow. This was also the site of a princely hall building, the size of present barn. East of the barrow, two small mounds are still preserved of the cemetary this side. It is possbile to enjoy one’s lunch at Raknehaugen or a swim a swim in the neighbouring Lake Ljøgottjern. This is one of a number of glacial cettle lakes in the area and a natural reserve. The trail continous to the farmstead of Haug (hillock) through a marked depression in the landscape that has been created by travellers over the centuries. At the farmyard the pilgrim trail turns left (north) along the majestic birch alley. Instead, you continue straight ahead, eventually down hill and through an underpass. Follow the ancient footpath Gropavegen, onto Gardermovegen. Ahead is the centre of Jessheim. You can follow Storgata (the main street) to the railway station.

SUMMER & BEACHES
Romerike’s rivers, lakes and ponds offer countless, lovely bathing spots and beaches. Her er noen av mulighetene: • Myrdammen and Åmotdammen in the municipality of Rælingen are two great bathing spots with wheelchair accessibility and lavatories – also providing a perfect base for hiking trips. • Hurdalsjøen is a beautiful lake with many bathing areas – some more organised than others. • Nordbytjernet – near the heart of Jessheim as well as Ljøgodttjern by Raknehaugen in Ullensaker. • Årnestrand recreational area – by the west bank of Mjøsa in Feiring – docks and lavatory facilities. • Frognerstranda / Hagen camping grounds along Glomma/E16 – north of Vormsund. • Gansvika – south of Fetsunddocks, kiosks, cafe and lavatories. • Tangen bathing spots by Setten – excellent for small children, kiosks and lavatories. • Vangen bathing area, Langvannet in Lørenskog – bathing spot with a sandy beach and large grassy field, public lavatories.
• Rulsedammen by Åneby in Nittedal, a nice place to swim in Nitelva with adjacent grassy fields. • Nebbursvollen Friluftsbad. A large open-air bath with 3 pools (50 m pool, paddling pool with toys and a wading pool). Large recreational areas, water slides, showers and lavatories. Sand volley ball court, kiosk and playground. A nice place to have fun, play ball games, have barbecues and stroll along the river. Great for families. • Lysdammen bathing area in Gjerdrum. • Lima on the south bank of Hurdalssjøen has a shallow bathing area, making it especially suitable for children. There is a lavatory building nearby.
Myrdammen.
FISHING Interesting in fishing? You’ll find countless opportunities in Vorma and Glomma – the river is rich in northern pike and zander, and in the streams you can find schools of graylings. The largest Burbot specimens to ever be caught in Norway were fished in the lower parts of Glomma, in the direction of Øyeren. In addition, Kampåa is perhaps the river richest in trout in Akershus, with excellent opportunities for fishing both trout and perch. Cultural activities – Romerike has a variety of cultural opportunities – everything from museums, galleries, churches, and shops with crafts, handiwork and design. Several municipalities have beautiful cultural centres of their own – with performances by a variety of well-known artists. In other words, there’s something for everyone.
A number of festivals and events take place throughout the year in Romerike, and you can find a list of most of them under “what’s on?” at www.visitromerike.no.
B I K I N G & A C T I V E H O L I D AY National cycle route nr. 7, also known as Pilgrimsruta (Pilgrim’s route), stretches through Romerike. Some of the southernmost parts of Mjøstråkk also cut through the northern end of Romerike. Countless forest roads and paths in Romeriksåsen, Østmarka and other wooded areas are superbly suited for experiencing the natural beauty of Romerike from a bicycle seat. You can also find marked bicycle paths in the municipalities. Many good tips can be found on www.syklistene.no and on our websites. A round trip on a bicycle in Romerike – for the whole family, as a day trip or step-by-step A pleasant round trip in Romerike, with many opportunities to visit attractive locations. Those who feel up to it can try to cycle the entire trip in a single day. For most people it may be better to split the trip into several stages, or bring the bicycle on the train for parts of the trip. A bicycle can be brought on the train at the cost of a childrens’ ticket. Let’s start at Jessheim. From Jessheim, the trail goes to Nordkisa, and then down to Svanfoss sluice by Vorma. Every Sunday, Elvekongen (“The River King”) leaves from Årnes to Svanfoss and back again. It is then possible to take the boat to Årnes. From Årnes the trail goes to the west side of Glomma, and the first road to the left in the direction of Hvam. Here you can visit the Gamle Hvam (“Old Hvam”) museum, as well as a delightful farmer’s shop, “Beite”, at Hvam high school, which sells good local food. From Hvam, the path continues in the direction of Rånåsfoss. Akershus Energi has built “Energiforum”, a knowledge- and information centre at the Rånåsfoss Power Station. The theme of the centre is electricity, and tours must be booked in advance. From Rånåsfoss the trip continues along the west side of Glomma, to Bingsfoss and Sørumsand. Confident cyclists can try to take the path alongside Glomma, but there are
parts of the road where it will be necessary to climb off the bicycle and push. At Sørumsand we can recommend a trip with Tertitten, the narrow-track museum railway that starts and stops at Sørumsand. Bicycles are secured at Sørumsand station while you take a good old-fashioned train trip. From there you continue to Fetsund, first along the highway, then into more rural, wooded areas. In Fetsund the pike burgers are ready on the grill at Fetsund Lenser. A fun museum for the whole family. From Fetsund the trip continues to Lillestrøm. By Åkrene take a right before crossing Leirelva, and cycle on smaller forest roads to Leirsund. From Leirsund the trip continues towards Frogner, Lindeberg and Kløfta via Ihlevegen, around Ullensaker Church and Randbydalen back to Jessheim. Have a great trip! (text and picture: Sidsel Skjelmerud Cockpit KommunikasjonAS If you don’t want to take the Pilgrim’s Route there are countless paths, forest highways and marked hiking trails. Most municipalities in Romerike have created their own trail maps that can usually be purchased at local petrol stations – or by request at service offices in each individual municipality. Akershus’s highest point, Fjellsjøkampen at 812 metres above sea level, stands in Romerike – specifically in Hurdal. Another ideal vantage point is Mistberget at 663 metres above sea level. You can also take a look at www.turkartakershus.no for further advice Canoeing and kayaking on the lakes can also be an exhilarating experience – why not explore Glomma or Vorma?
