Another encouraging sign is the redevelopment of Quarry Hill. As Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre move into their new headquarters, this expansion holds many exciting possibilities for theatre-goers, including collaborations with the Playhouse. Dangerous Liaisons The Devil finds work for idle hands. Letters fly between the mansions of France as two bored aristocrats plot a game of heartbreak and ruin. As their plans unfold, innocence is preyed upon, relationships are shattered and love is lost in this account of decadence and cruelty. Vivaldi’s spine-tingling Four Seasons, played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia, wraps itself around seductive dance in this sexually charged production. Northern Ballet’s productions mix classical dance and theatre, embracing popular culture and taking inspiration from literature, opera, or giving a fresh interpretation of classical ballets. Northern Ballet has carved a unique place in the UK’s cultural landscape and was voted Britain’s favourite ballet company for three consecutive years at the National Dance Awards.

Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall
A Guy. Three Girls. One Ring. The ‘50s for Billy Fisher are far from hip. He’s still living at home and doing a dull job at the local undertakers. But Billy has his dreams, and they’re not just of becoming a movie star or winning the pools – he’s invented a whole country. Back in the real world he’s less successful and has managed to get himself engaged to two girls simultaneously, neither of whom he likes, and is currently sharing one engagement ring between them. When Liz, the girl he really cares for, returns from London, Billy’s lies all start to catch him up and it’s time to think fast or finally face up to the truth.

Crash by William Nicholson
It’s a reunion of sorts, but you’d never guess they ever had anything in common to see them now. Nick – Securities Trader for Goldman Sachs and collector of art. Humphrey – an artist with ethics and a cheque he’s not sure he should cash. Christine – the beautiful girl they both loved, but Humphrey married. All together again, in Nick’s Elizabethan mansion, getting ready to celebrate the unveiling of a new sculpture.

But under the surface Humphrey is angry. Angry in the same way that the whole world is angry, angry about how people like Nick seem to have got away with causing a financial meltdown that affected everyone, but still manage to bank their bonuses. William Nicholson is the Tony and Academy award nominated author of Shadowlands and screenwriter on Gladiator and Elizabeth: The Golden Age as well as an acclaimed novelist. His new play seethes with the fury of a nation duped, alongside some great jokes about art, Collateralised Debt Obligations and the ramblers.

It's Been an exciting year for first floor, with a number of developments that have meant the creative space for young people is now more active than ever.
First Floor launched in 2009, following the two years of intensive fundraising that enabled its transformation from a props store into a flexible creative workshop space for young people aged eleven to nineteen. The venue, which is situated across from West Yorkshire Playhouse on St Peter’s Square, boasts two large performing arts spaces, a visual arts studio, meeting rooms and offices. Already there have been some memorable projects and programmes: Inspired by Lenny Henry’s performance in Othello last year, Breeze Arts Foundation created their own version of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Borderlines, an international collaboration, brought young people from Leeds and Berlin together in creating a futuristic site specific work around the themes of borders.
Sam Perkins, Director of Arts Development explains, ‘The Playhouse has always pioneered new approaches to education and community work. We believe that the arts can transform people’s lives and First Floor will enable us to help young people to find their own creativity, learn new skills and raise their aspirations.’
First Floor recently rolled out an ambitious six day a week programme of events and workshops that makes the most of the versatile space. Young people get involved in shaping the programme at First Floor through regular meetings of our Young People’s Panel. According to Projects Co-ordinator Saira Mughal, ‘Things have really progressed at First Floor and we have developed the programme to offer young people a lot more in music, art and drama.’ First Floor has introduced weekly Saturday Sessions that engage young people through workshops for 11 to 19 year olds. These drop-in
Box Office 0113 213 7700
classes are led by a range of freelance directors, musicians and artists who offer sessions in drama, music and visual art. Friday Nights are aimed at music lovers, whether they are just starting out or looking to brush up on their skills. These weekly workshops allow budding musicians to write songs, perfect their singing techniques and have fun, led by First Floor’s Musician in Residence. First Floor also hosts one-off events drawing on a range of arts practice. To keep track of special events such as The Big Sing, First Floor is
launching a blog which will detail events and allow its members to share their experiences online. Log on to www.wyp.org.uk/firstfloorblog to find out the latest news. West Yorkshire Playhouse is keen to invest in the artists of the future. First Floor was recently named as an Arts Award Welcome Centre where young people can study towards accredited qualifications and gain help and advice from trained mentors.
‘First Floor will enable us to help young people to find their own creativity, learn new skills and raise their aspirations.’ Sam Perkins, Director of Arts Development
We continue to fundraise to support all the activities at First Floor and would love to hear from you if you feel you can support our work. You can find out more about the current programme of workshops and events by calling us on 0113 245 5252 or why not drop in? First Floor is open from 9.30am to 5pm every Monday to Friday and also 11am to 12.30pm on a Saturday during term times.

Yerma
by Federico Garcia Lorca adapted by Ursula Rani Sarma What if the one thing you wanted from your life was the one thing you couldn’t have? Yerma longs for a child with every fibre of her being. When presented with Juan for a husband she takes him not for love, but for the chance to start a family. Now that is denied to her, the world ceases to make sense. Locked in a small town inhabited by smaller minds, Yerma begins to push against the rules, searching for truth and assistance in people and places that are not considered socially acceptable. Her innocent actions send a ripple through a community whose twisted minds fashion it into a tidal wave. Scorned and misunderstood by her people and faced with the reality of a life spent childless with a man she does not desire, Yerma commits the ultimate act of rebellion. Box Office 0113 213 7700
