They will feature lighting and sound by our teams of designers and operators whilst the wardrobe department will create costumes and wigs for the forty-five actors.

All of us at the Playhouse are proud of the quality and variety of the work we make – our projects in schools, the productions that get made here, and those that go on to tour nationally or transfer to the West End.

Whether behind the scenes or front of house everyone here is dedicated to bringing you the very best theatre experience they can. We hope you continue to enjoy the results and come to see something made at West Yorkshire Playhouse soon.

This season we have built seven productions here at the Playhouse. They have been rehearsed here, constructed and painted in our workshops and dressed by our prop makers.

Watershed Productions present the BBC Worldwide and Polka Theatre production

Created by Lauren Child, adapted by Jonathan Lloyd

The Tabard Inn, London, sometime in the fourteenth century. A motley group of individuals – Knight, Cook, Miller, Squire, Wife and more – gather for their pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral. On the way, they regale each other with their colourful tales to pass the time of day, and so unfolds one of the greatest collections of stories ever told. Come to The Canterbury Tales and experience theatrical riches: love stories, rude stories and farce most lewd, high romance and hidden depths, chivalry, villainy, jousting and boisterous antics, mirth and merriment, poetry and puppetry and a good dose of song and dance. This is human nature at its best and worst and its most wickedly entertaining.

If you were about to marry your childhood sweetheart, had just been given the promotion you’d always wanted, and were surrounded by people you believed to be your best friends, only to have it all ripped from you in one instant, how would you react? How would you cope with the knowledge that three greedy, morally bankrupt individuals had stolen your happiness? And what would you do if you were given the opportunity to take your revenge? The Count of Monte Cristo has fascinated audiences around the world ever since its first publication. Now writer Joel Horwood and director Alan Lane have created a version of his story that captures all the fun and tragedy of the Count’s transformation from wronged youth into seductive avenger. At sixty-one years old, Willy Loman has been a travelling salesman for thirty-four years. Now, he’s been taken off salary and is forced to confront a future on commission. As memories and dreams of the past ebb and flow, Willy’s family struggle to engage him in the present. Death of a Salesman won the Pulitzer Prize in 1949. It is considered to be Miller’s greatest work and one of the most important plays of the 20th century, still with a startling relevancy over sixty years after its premiere. ‘Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He’s not the finest character that ever lived. But he’s a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid.’

Noël Coward’s incomparable domestic comedy of bad manners and the surreal lives of the 1930s bright young things.

West Yorkshire Playhouse

By Noël Coward

Judith Bliss, once glittering star of the London stage, now in early retirement, is still enjoying life with more than a little high drama and the occasional big scene. As the weekend approaches, Judith, her novelist husband David, and their two equally self-obsessed children, Simon and Sorel, have each invited a guest to join them in the country. Each guest is woefully inappropriate, and equally unprepared for the parlour games, in-fighting, and outrageous proposals on which the Bliss family appear to thrive. Hay Fever is a hilarious rollercoaster ride through a weekend with the family from hell, featuring some of Coward’s finest creations, all of them subject to Judith’s outrageous whims and contrary demands. ‘I don’t believe in astrology.
