Restoring a Masterpiece

Restoring a Masterpiece: The Renovation of the Eastman Theatre, co-produced by WXXI and Eastman School of Music, is a one-hour documentary that captures the fascinating story of the Eastman Theatre and documents its recent restoration. Shot in high-definition and narrated by Rochester native, actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman, the film showcases the intricate renovation of a building that is itself a work of art. At the same time, it tells the story of the intertwined histories of the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and demonstrates how a building can have a new life in the restoration of an historic downtown. Production funding for film is provided by The Pike Company, PAETEC, Louise Epstein, and Keith and Betsy Wilson. Restoring a Masterpiece: The Renovation of the Eastman Theatre airs Tuesday, June 1 at 8 p.m., on WXXI-TV/HD. It repeats that evening at 9:30 and again on Monday, June 7 at 9:30 p.m. JUNE 2010 Volume 1, Issue 10 WXXI is a public non-commercial broadcasting station owned and operated by WXXI Public Broadcasting Council, a not-for-profit corporation chartered by the Board of Regents of New York State. “Program Listings” (USPS 0742-390) is published monthly at 280 State Street, Rochester, NY 14614 to promote the programs and activities of the public broadcasting stations. Lab is designed for listeners who demand skepticism but appreciate wonder; who are curious about the world, but also want to be moved and surprised. See episode descriptions below. Radio Lab airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on AM1370/FM-HD91.5-2

1370 Forum & AM 1370 Specials Animal Minds airs Sunday, June 6 at 10 p.m. When we gaze into the eyes of our beloved pets, can we ever really know what they’re thinking? In this hour of Radio Lab, we explore what science can say about what goes on in the minds of animals Lucy airs Sunday, June 13 at 10 p.m. Chimps, Bonobos, Humans -- we’re all great apes. This hour we take a look at what happens when we all try to live together. Featuring a chimp named Lucy, this episode tells Lucy’s story and other tales of radical sharing between humans and the creatures on Earth most like us.

Limits airs Sunday, June 20 at 10 p.m. How much can you jam into a human brain? How far can you push yourself past feelings of exhaustion? In this hour of Radio Lab, we examine human limits. Famous Tumors airs Sunday, June 27 at 10 p.m. This hour of Radio Lab is dedicated to tumors. It may sound like a grim topic, but what we find when we look closely at these anatomical aberrations are fascinating tales of evolution, immortality, and even... maybe... God? We’ll hear about a tumor that changes modern science, and the tragic untold story of the woman attached to that tumor.
