DEAR FRIEND, I’m proud to share the news that WXXI was recently awarded a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to lead five public television stations in a pilot project to expand WXXI and the Norm Silverstein Golisano Foundation’s local Move to Include initiative. With experience in programming and producing disability-related content, we will guide WFYI (Indianapolis), OPB (Oregon), WGCU (Southwest Florida), WCNY (Syracuse), and Iowa Public Television in content production, curation, and engagement to promote inclusion in communities across the country. Designed to meet the needs of diverse audiences and raise the voices of people with a variety of intellectual and physical disabilities, each station will work to organize community partnerships, acquire and create content, provide outreach, engagement, and promotion for the initiative. The national project is slated to kick off July 2020 in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Our efforts in disability related stories began 15 years ago, when we partnered with the Al Sigl Community of Agencies to produce Dialogue on Disability, a one-week initiative weaving programming and news coverage focused on disabilities. In the first year Dialogue on Disability reached 30,000 people. As the initiative grew to a yearlong project and earned support from the Golisano Foundation, WXXI added more production and digital platforms to the programming, added film-screening events at the Little Theatre, and a dedicated Inclusion Desk within WXXI’s News department. We’re looking forward to building a more inclusive community by spotlighting people’s different abilities and encouraging dialogue about disability issues across the country. Throughout the year I’ll be sharing more details about this project, so stay tuned. On another note, I’m pleased to report that the staff at CITY Newspaper has moved their offices into our building at 280 State Street and that David Andreatta has started his new position as Editor. We are proud to have David join the talented and committed staff at CITY to help preserve and expand independent local journalism in the Rochester area. We look forward to enhanced coverage of arts and culture, neighborhoods, and important issues facing our community. Add that to the extensive reporting from WXXI and you can see why many are considering ours to be the preeminent news team in the region. Best regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A with a WXXI CORPORATE SPONSOR Self-dubbed the Greatest Show & Tell on Earth, MAKER FAIRE is a celebration of the DIY spirit in the heart of Downtown Rochester and a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. Saturday November 23rd marks the 6th annual Maker Faire Rochester event. With over one hundred and fifty maker exhibits, you’ll find a space to learn new skills and an opportunity to see everything from robots and rockets to fire-blasting trumpets and giant interactive sculptures. Organizer and Co-Chair Dan Schneiderman shares more. Q. How do you find makers in our community? Makers are everywhere! In fact, everyone is a maker! You can find them in schools, makerspaces, on stage, in repair shops, on Etsy and Kickstarter, or at home. Anyone who makes, performs, fixes, or takes something apart is a maker. Q. Why is the “Maker Movement” so important today? The Maker Movement impacts everything from economic development (with makers starting and growing their own companies), to healthcare and education initiatives. It allows us to stretch our way of creative problem solving. Within the movement, people have become activated to solve both local and global issues. The movement is not about singular tools or technologies, but about creating a whole ecosystem that brings communities together through making. Q. Why is the Maker Faire a particularly important event for kids? Maker Faire feeds their curiosity and helps inspire kids to think creatively. We’ve seen kids learn how to use tools while being exposed to creations they never would have thought of before. It also provides a platform where kids and adults can share their passions and projects at the same level. We’ve had makers as young as seven years old explain how robots work to local retirees. Q. What do you hope Faire-goers take away from the event? Anyone can be a maker and it is never too late to learn a new skill or try to make something crazy. Q. A few of your favorite maker moments from previous faires? A few standouts are seeing people’s reactions to Heavy Meta’s nineteen foot tall fire-breathing dragon parked on Main Street, watching kids learn new skills, and seeing a couch drive down the halls with Mermaid Tory riding next to a few other makers.

British documentarian Richard Macer embarks on a journey across the United Kingdom with his dyslexic son, Arthur. On their road trip, they meet several notable dyslexics, such as Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson and actor/comedian Eddie Izzard. Forty years after his own struggles in school, Richard himself also gets tested for dyslexia, as he seeks to find out if he passed it down to his son. This presentation is part of Move to Include, a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation designed to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

CONNECT NY:

TRAUMA INFORMED EDUCATION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370 According to state education officials, the number of students facing mental health challenges is dramatically increasing. To adapt, schools are incorporating Trauma Informed Practices into the classroom. This special looks at why trauma is affecting more children, and looks at the skills educators are adopting to help them cope. Connect NY offers lively insightful discussion, information and analysis on timely public affairs topics that affect residents across the Empire State. We will explore personal experiences, important conflicts and tough issues unfolding at the state level through the lens of the stakeholders involved. As we gain the perspective of those in government, labor and environmental organizations, community leadership, law and business, we aim to shed light on potential solutions to the complex problems New Yorkers seek to solve.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

SPYCATCHER FINDING INSIDER THREATS IN THE DIGITAL AGE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370

Without our being fully aware, hacking, artificial intelligence, offensive cyber, and data surveillance has crept into our lives. This episode delves into one of the most damaging spy cases this country has ever known, and explains how casinos, algorithms, and data surveillance will transform spying in the modern age.

INTELLIGENCE SQUARED US:

SHOULD WE REPLACE PRIVATE INSURANCE WITH MEDICARE FOR ALL? SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370 As the nation gears up for the 2020 election, Democrats are promising bold new changes to the American health care system. One idea championed by many on the progressive left is “Medicare for All,” or a single-payer system, which would do away with private health insurance for most forms of care. Should private health insurance exist? Or is it time for Medicare for All?

CONNECT NY: ON THE FRINGE: DEALING WITH HATE IN A LAND OF FREE SPEECH SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27 AT 9 P.M. ON AM 1370 How should we address the intersection of hate speech, violence and free expression? Governor Cuomo wants to define “hate-filled murder with the intent to cause mass casualties” as an Act of Domestic Terrorism. Hear from groups who have historically been the targets of white nationalism and experts about the line between free speech and hate speech and what to do about social and traditional media that some say are allowing fringe groups to thrive on line and in our communities.
