DEAR FRIENDS, You don’t have to be a kid to appreciate this – in fact, parents and grandparents and caregivers may be the most excited about this news. WXXI is launching a 24/7 children’s service, which includes a new TV channel. “WXXI Kids” will support our mission to provide our youngest viewers with nonviolent, commercial-free children’s educational Norm Silverstein programming. You’ll find it over-the-air on WXXIDT 21.4 and on Time Warner Cable on channel 1277. It will also be streamed live and available on digital platforms. The new channel includes popular favorites, such as Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Odd Squad, Dinosaur Train, and Wild Kratts. (The complete schedule is listed in the TV grid section of this magazine, as well as online at WXXI.org/kids.) WXXI-DT 21.1 and cable channel 11 will continue to carry children’s programming from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. You’ll still have access to our Ready to Learn programs that help prepare kids for success in school, and Homework Hotline, our statewide, live call-in show, where kids get help with homework problems. With the addition of WXXI Kids, we are making some changes to give our adult viewers more choices, too. WXXI Create will now provide lifestyle programming 24 hours a day. You’ll have access to more “how-to” shows, painting, travel, and cooking programs, the kinds of offerings that make WXXI Create one of our popular choices. You can find WXXI Create over-the-air on WXXI-DT 21.3 and on Time Warner Cable channel 1276. As always, WXXI-TV will continue to provide programs that are thoughtprovoking, entertaining, and inspiring – and in February, it includes select documentaries in celebration of Black History Month. We’ll be airing a new Independent Lens film—The Birth of a Movement – that looks at how D.W. Griffith’s 1915 The Birth of a Nation unleashed a battle still waging today about race relations, representation, and the power and influence of Hollywood. WXXI will also be presenting Africa’s Great Civilizations, a three-part series that brings to life the epic stories of African kingdoms and cultures hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. On the radio side, Classical 91.5 brings you a tribute to the great soprano Leontyne Price and AM 1370 will broadcast a three-part series, Historically Black, showcasing some of The Washington Post’s Historically Black Tumblr project’s objects discussed through interviews. At the Little Theatre on February 27 we’ll be hosting a free screening of the new American Masters documentary that looks at the prolific life of author and activist Maya Angelou. The screening is in partnership with Writers and Books, and a panel discussion will follow. All these programs and more are listed on the following pages of this magazine and online at WXXI.org/bh. I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on Connections with Evan Dawson to discuss the power of an informed community in an era of “fake news.” I was joined by my colleagues Michael Oreskes, Senior Vice President of News and Editorial Director for NPR and Neal Shapiro, President of WNET New York and former President of NBC News to talk about public media’s responsibility to help audiences decipher information and sort through what is real and what isn’t. During the show, Michael said something we strongly agree with. “At the end of the day, the success of our democracy is an informed electorate.” If you didn’t hear the show (from January 10), I encourage you to listen to the podcast, archived at WXXInews.org/connections. I hope you and your family enjoy the launch of our new kids channel, the program additions that we were able to make on WXXI Create as a result of that channel, as well as the many special programs we have scheduled in honor of Black History Month. Best Regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Once Again Nut Butter Collective, Inc., prides itself in providing health-conscious consumers with natural and organic nut butters and honey products. Communications Manager Gael Orr explains what makes their company unique.

Q. Once Again Nut Butter has been in operation for 40 years. What drives this longevity and success?

GAEL ORR

COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, ONCE AGAIN NUT BUTTER COLLECTIVE, INC.

We are 100% employee owned. Our employees are also owners in the company and make the decisions in how our company is run. Our employees care a lot more about the quality of the products, meeting customer’s needs, and the environment. Our sustainability model looks at three things: 1) how people are treated throughout our supply chain, 2) how our planet is c ared for in the creation of our products from growing organic commodities all the way to your dinner plate, and 3) that we maintain a quality product.

Q. On average, how many nuts does it take to produce one jar of peanut butter?

A jar of peanut butter contains approximately 650 nuts. But it takes 177,000 seeds to make one jar of our sesame tahini butter! We have a short YouTube video on the process of the life of a jar, which demonstrates the entire process with photos. https://youtu.be/yk0mMhZWgio

Q. What are the top health benefits associated with Once Again nuts and honey? Our nut butters are not homogenized so you are really getting just one or two ingredients. For example, almonds are the only ingredient in our almond butter. Our varieties have various flavors through roasting temperatures. The benefits to your health are that you are eating a non-genetically modified food that contains no hidden additives. Our honeys are truly raw honeys. That means we don’t heat them above 118 degrees. Heating above that temperature damages the health benefits of the propolis, which provides the allergen and antibacterial benefits of honey. Our clover honey is locally collected from hives within a 60 mile radius in Nunda, N. Y., where the company is located.

Q. Where can people find Once Again products? Our products are found at natural and organic grocery stores, such as locally operated Lori’s Natural Foods, Abundance Food Co-op and Hart’s Local Grocers, and food co-ops nationwide. Our honeys are found in your major local grocery stores, such as Wegmans.

An annual tradition on WXXITV, we offer an alternative to watching the big game. It’s called Super Drama Sunday and it features the first ten episodes of A Place to Call Home, a sweeping romantic drama that centers on enigmatic nurse Sarah Adams. Sarah returns to her native Australia after two decades in Europe. Estranged from her mother and carrying the secrets of her wartime experiences, Adams becomes involved in the lives of the Blighs, a wealthy pastoralist family. (Perfect timing: Season 4 of A Place to Call Home premieres this spring). The drama continues with Mercy Street at 8pm, Victoria at 9pm, and then Secrets of the Six Wives at 10 pm. CREDIT: APT

In the show’s final decade, Oprah and her team staged massive spectacles of increasing grandiosity, from the infamous car giveaway to a 21,000-person flash mob that shut down part of Chicago. “It had become increasingly more difficult to top what you’d done the year before,” Oprah told WBEZ’s Jenn White. “I mean, to the point where we literally sat in a room saying ‘What about outer space?’ “ The final installment this series finds Oprah living her life at the top, pushing the boundaries of what could be done with the world’s most powerful talk show, and why it all had to end after 25 years. AM 1370 Specials Objects hold history. They’re evocative of stories stamped in time. As part of The Washington Post’s coverage of the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture, people submitted dozens of objects that make up their own lived experiences of black history, creating a “people’s museum” of personal objects, family photos and more. Historically Black, a three part series, brings those objects and their stories to life through interviews, archival sound and music. The Washington Post and APM Reports are proud to collaborate in presenting these rich personal histories, along with hosts Keegan-Michael Key, Roxane Gay, Issa Rae and Another Round hosts Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton.
