Premieres Sunday, January 4 At 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV Rejoin the Crawley family for a fifth season of intimately interlaced stories centered on the English country estate. The series returns for an epic fifth season set in 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister. The radio is the latest miracle of the age. And Downton’s traditional ways are besieged on all fronts, as evidenced by this exchange between the head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes, and the butler, Mr. Carson: “We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whether you like it or not, Downton is catching up with the times we live in,” says Mrs. Hughes. “That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” Carson retorts.

Dear Friends, It’s a New Year, and that means we can look forward to the new season of Downton Abbey! Season Five premieres Sunday, January 4, at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV and follows the plot threads left dangling from last season. There will be plenty to keep us engaged and Norm Silverstein entertained, including Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’s trials as a secret single mom, Thomas’s scheming against Bates, Robert’s battles against modernity, Tom’s quest to be true to his ideals, Violet’s one-line zingers, and more. Along with Downton Abbey, we’ll also be bringing back Talking Abbey LIVE, WXXI’s Downton Abbey wrap-up show with host Danielle Abramson Swartz. Airing immediately after Downton Abbey episodes, the live-call in show invites you to share your thoughts with special guests right here in Rochester at our WXXI studios. January is also the month we host Dialogue on Disability, one of our annual initiatives of which I am most proud. For more than a decade we have partnered with Al Sigl Community of Agencies to provide special programs that spotlight “the abilities of people with disabilities.” The initiative is designed to encourage dialogue about the vital role inclusion plays in our community. In the first year, Dialogue on Disability reached 30,000 people. Today, the initiative reaches nearly one million. We hope you’ll tune in to WXXI January 19-23 for special TV and radio programs, as well as news reports and community conversations on Connections with Evan Dawson. The vital work of Dialogue on Disability served as a model for our current work with the Golisano Foundation for Move to Include. This initiative enables us to continue to bring our community special TV and radio programming, news features, film screenings with panel discussions, and other offerings that spotlight the abilities of people with disabilities throughout the year. Dialogue on Disability is now part of Move to Include, but January will always be dedicated to our good friends and important relationships at Al Sigl. Working together with partners like Al Sigl Community of Agencies and the Golisano Foundation enables us to work to bring about positive change in our community. The same holds true with our partnership with the Little Theatre. Now in the third year of our affiliation, we have made significant changes to the five theaters – including new digital projectors, sound systems, and new screens. As we gear up for “movie awards season,” with the Golden Globes, IFC’s Indies Spirit Awards and the Academy Awards all coming up, I hope you have enjoyed seeing many of this year’s award-nominated films at The Little. Last year we were proud to have screened six of the nine Academy Award nominated films in the “best picture” category. On behalf of WXXI and The Little, we wish you a happy and safe 2015 and we hope it’s another year for you to enjoy the best that we offer “on air, online and on screen!” Best Regards,

Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI MEDIA PARTNER Rebecca Delaney, Project Director of Fast Forward Film Festival (FFFF), offers a glimpse at a new local film festival to kick off Earth Week 2015. The deadline for entries is 11:59 PM EST on February 27, 2015.

Q: How would you describe FFFF? A: FFFF is a two-day film festival, April 17 and 18, 2015, at The Little and Dryden Theatres that will showcase new environmental perspectives. The festival challenges local Rochesterians to utilize the power of visual storytelling to raise environmental awareness. No prior experience in filmmaking is necessary to create a beautiful, impactful film.

Q: What would you like the WXXI audience to know about FFFF? A: FFFF is an initiative of the Lost Bird Project (LBP), a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect more deeply with the earth through art. Longtime Rochester resident Andrew Stern, co-founder of The LBP and founder of FFFF, wanted to deepen environmental connections within the community and give voice to local people and environmental concerns. The Festival does just that— it celebrates the art of film but also asks the community to be more aware of our natural surroundings.

Q. What distinguishes FFFF from other film festivals in the Rochester area? A: These are short films about our changing environment, made by you. All festival entrants, first-time or veteran filmmakers alike, are from the Greater Rochester area. They know and care about our city. We’re hosting a festival, but we are also strengthening a community that cares about art and the environment. In fact, we currently have more than thirty local organizations that have joined the Friends of the Festival network. FFFF Friends support the festival’s mission and assist festival entrants by providing knowledge and resources.

Q. Can you elaborate on the guideline that all films submitted must be limited to 5 minutes? A: Shorts are a liberating form that allow for greater experimentation and give voice to both aspiring and experienced filmmakers. By focusing creativity into films under five minutes in length, FFFF films will become an important communication tool to inspire change. www.fastforwardroc.org Rebecca Delaney, Project Director

Walter Williams:

Suffer No fools Sunday, January 11 at 1pm on WXXI-TV

This film, produced and directed by Rochester’s Anthony Machi, is a provocative portrait of the iconoclastic black American author, educator, and syndicated columnist, whose views on race and economics have made him one of the nation’s most original, provocative, and often controversial voices. Fearlessly outspoken, Williams uses economics as an analytical tool to challenge conventional wisdom on everything from affirmative action to the minimum wage, from the value of business licenses to the negative effects of government assistance programs on black families.

Championing arts and culture in the Rochester region and beyond, Arts in Focus – a halfhour, weekly show – features indepth stories and profiles of the Rochester region’s artists and arts organizations. Hosted by WXXI’s Evan Dawson, the series spotlights the best of Rochester’s arts and cultural scene, as well as arts and culture in communities across the U.S. After its initial broadcast, episodes will be available to watch online at WXXI.org/artsinfocus.

“GRANTCHESTER” AIRS SUNDAYS AT 10:30PM ON WXXI-TV, STARTING JANUARY 18

Based on the acclaimed mystery novels by James Runcie, the young vicar is styled after Runcie’s late father, who was Archbishop of Canterbury in the 1980s.

This one-hour special from IEEE Spectrum explores the latest technological advances for the automobile, and previews cars we may see in the not-too-distant future. For the last 100 years cars have been pretty much the same fundamentally; mechanically driven, energy from oil, powered by combustion, controlled mechanically and hydraulically, driven by a person. But now, we’re starting to see new designs for the automobile; electrically driven, using diverse sources of energy, controlled digitally or electronically, able to drive themselves.

Invisibilia: The Secret History of Thoughts Sunday, January 11 at 9 p.m. on AM 1370 This new series is about the unseen forces that control human behavior - things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions, and emotions. Co-hosted by Lulu Miller and Alix Spiegel, creators of Radiolab and This American Life, Invisibilia interweaves narrative storytelling and fascinating new psychological and brain science. This episode ponders the question, “Are my thoughts related to my inner wishes, do they reveal who I really am?” The answer can have profound consequences for your life.

This program examines how categories define us — how, if given a chance, humans will jump into one category or another. We need them. We want them. We look at what categories provide for us, we hear the story of a person caught between gender categories in a way that will surprise you, and we visit the first retirement community in the country to be based around one ethnic group.

This episode examines the surprising effect that your expectations can have on the people around you. We’ll hear how people’s expectations can influence how well a rat runs a maze.

New Year’s Day from Vienna 2015 Thursday, January 1 at 11 a.m. on Classical 91.5

The Philharmonic presents its ever popular annual New Year’s Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. You’ll hear your favorite waltzes, polkas and more – a festive way to start off the New Year. This broadcast is sponsored locally by The Killian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Foundation.

The great Renée Fleming stars as the beguiling femme fatale who captivates all Paris in Lehár’s enchanting operetta, seen in a new staging by Broadway virtuoso director and choreographer Susan Stroman. Stroman and her design team of Julian Crouch and costume designer William Ivey Long have created an artnouveau setting that climaxes with singing and dancing grisettes at the legendary Maxim’s. Nathan Gunn co-stars as Danilo and Kelli O’Hara is Valencienne. Andrew Davis conducts. This opera is also part of Met Opera’s HD at the Movies series and can be seen at Tinseltown, Henrietta Staduim 18, Eastview Mall 13 and Webster 12. BRUTALLY HONEST

“ACTRESS”

COMES TO THE LITTLE Have you ever wondered what really happens on the inside, day to day, when a Hollywood star hits the rocks? On Tuesday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m., the new documentary “Actress” takes us through the front door, into the home of just such a situation. Brandy Burre had a recurring role on HBO’s “The Wire” when she gave up her career to start a family. When she decides to reclaim her life as an actor, the domestic world she’s carefully created crumbles around her. Using elements of melodrama and cinema verité, “Actress” is both a present tense portrait of a dying relationship and an exploration of a complicated woman, performing the role of herself, in a complexyet-familiar story. It’s a film about starring in the movie of your life. It’s a film that breaks the rules. “Actress” is presented as part of The Little’s One Take: Stories Through the Lens documentary series. Tickets for this film are $8.00. Details are available at thelittle.org.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: JOHN On Sunday, January 18 at 12:00 p.m. and Tuesday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m., The Little is pleased to present “John,” a production of the internationally-renowned DV8 Physical Theatre. DV8 has produced 18 highly acclaimed dance-theatre works and four films for television, which have garnered over 50 national and international awards. The company’s new production, “John,” authentically depicts reallife stories, combining movement and spoken word to create an intense and moving theatrical experience. Lloyd Newson, DV8’s Artistic Director, interviewed more than 50 men asking them frank questions, initially about love and sex. One of those men was John. What emerged was a story that is both extraordinary and touching. Years of crime, drug use and struggling to survive lead John on a search in which his life converges with others, in an unexpected place, unknown by most. Don’t miss this eagerly anticipated new production, recorded at London’s National Theatre. ———————————————————————————————————— Tickets for the show are $15 for Little members, students and seniors and $20 for general public. For more information about NT Live, visit our website, thelittle.org! “John” contains adult themes, strong language and nudity. It’s estimated to be suitable for 18 years and older.
