JANUARY 2018
SEASON PREMIERE
SUNDAY, JANUARY 14 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV
The queen returns for an all-new season of Victoria. Jenna Coleman is the feisty rookie monarch, asserting her rule over the most powerful nation on the planet, and Tom Hughes is her smoldering consort Prince Albert. Dame Diana joins the acting ensemble and Nell Hudson is back as the queen’s personal dresser, Mrs. Skerrett—along with a palace full of schemers and luminaries. The drama all takes place against the backdrop of the early years of the Industrial Revolution, when society was changing as fast as the queen’s growing family.

DEE MOSTELLER and HENRY SIMON NAMED WXXI’S 2017 ASSOCIATES OF THE YEAR
HUSBAND AND WIFE DUO HENRY SIMON AND DEE MOSTELLER
were named WXXI’s Associates of the Year at our annual Associates Dinner in November. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in support of WXXI’s mission of public service. Through The Lilliputian Foundation, a foundation Henry and Dee founded and named after their late dog Lilli, the couple has graciously provided financial support to organizations that they believe in. Big advocates of public media and independent films, they have supported several WXXI and the Little Theatre projects including the renovation of The Little’s marquee, the launch of WXXI’s pet-centered radio series, Unleashed, dollar-for-dollar challenges during membership drives, and continued support of Connections with Evan Dawson. Strong supporters of many local charitable organizations, Henry and Dee have also donated countless hours of their time to WXXI and the Little Theatre as volunteers, helping with everything from answering phones during pledge drives to supervising hands-on activities at many of WXXI’s children’s events, from representing WXXI and the Little Theatre at community events to serving as ambassadors of the station. Dee and Henry join a long list of Associate of the Year recipients, including WXXI Honorary Trustees Catherine Carlson, Betty Strasenburgh, and Richard F. Brush, as well as Larry and Jane Glazer, Suzanne Gouvernet, Harry P. Trueheart III, Dr. Nancy Perkins Weyl, Ted Shepard, Dick Eisenhart, B. Thomas Golisano, George M. Ewing, Sr., Robert C. Stevens, Dolores F. Parlato, Ed Saphar, Jacques Lipson, MD and Dr. Dawn Lipson, and Justin Vigdor.

I hope your holidays were shared with family and friends and that you are looking Norm Silverstein forward to 2018. One of our wishes for the New Year is to help build a more inclusive community by inspiring and motivating people to embrace different abilities of all people. That’s what our continued partnership with Al Sigl Community of Agencies and our Dialogue on Disability initiative is all about. For more than a decade this initiative has featured special programs that spotlight the abilities of people with disabilities and encourage dialogue about the vital role inclusion plays in our community. This year we’re hosting a free screening of The Rebound, an award-winning film that follows an underfunded Miami wheelchair basketball team for their first-ever national championship. It will screen at the Little Theatre on Wednesday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m. We will also have prime time specials, news reports, and community conversations on Connections with Evan Dawson. (You’ll find details about the film and a list of TV and radio specials planned for the week on the following pages.) For a complete list of all programming, visit: WXXI.org/include. The vital work of Dialogue on Disability has served as a model for our Move to Include initiative. Al Sigl and WXXI envisioned a project with even bigger community impact and together we worked with the Golisano Foundation to create Move to Include, a project that encourages thoughtful discussion about issues of inclusion and the differently-abled year round. And finally, January marks the much-anticipated new season of “Masterpiece’s” Victoria. On Sunday, January 14 at 9 p.m., Jenna Coleman returns as the young queen who wants it all—romance, power, an heir, and personal freedom. If you need to catch up on season one before season two premieres on January 14th, you can “binge watch” the first seven episodes on Sunday, January 7 from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on WXXI-TV. As we say goodbye to 2017 we look back on fond memories of the Little Theatre’s Marquee Relighting, the launch of the WXXI-Kids 24/7 channel, the County and City declaration of Be My Neighbor Day, Ken Burns’ Vietnam War series, Second Opinion’s special on Opioids, and so much more. It was all made possible with your support – and we look forward to building new memories in 2018. Thank you, and again Happy New Year from all of us at WXXI and the Little Theatre! Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org | @normWXXI
NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Originally founded in 1953, SHOP ONE provided an opportunity to purchase exclusively handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces of art and craft. After closing its doors in 1976, Shop One was reborn in 2010 at RIT’s Global Village to showcase contemporary works made by alumni, faculty and students. Shoppers are able to find an array of products, including photography, textiles, music, ceramics, and much more. Wendy Marks, Director of RIT F&A Galleries, shares additional insight on Shop One. Q. How are artists and designers selected? Artists and designers reach out and I visit their studio(s), review portfolios, and select work that represents a wide range of media. Q. Is there an artist you’re particularly excited about right now? I would have to say Josh Owen, an industrial design professional and the Chair of the Industrial Design Program in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at RIT. He’s nationally and internationally recognized and his designs can be found in museum collections and in the commercial marketplace. A visionary who leads this exciting program at RIT, Josh is instrumental in inspiring and educating the next generation of designers. Q. Valentine’s Day gift recommendations? Jewelry! RIT’s School for American Crafts is renowned for its Metals and Jewelry Design Program. Shop One’s exclusive and robust collection includes one-of-a-kind designs, including works made from precious metals and gemstones to 3D printed nylon and paper jewelry. Prices range from $15 to $500. Q. Has Shop One helped launch the careers of any RIT students? Absolutely! Shop One mentors and represents emerging artists in their initial retail gallery experience. In addition to participating in RIT classroom and studio critiques, we actively support, evangelize, and market all of our artists’ work via the online store and social media outlets. Q. Where should we park? Follow signs to Global Village, park in S Lot and walk through the breezeways to enter Global Village. Additional directions on the “Contact Us” page on our website.

DIALOGUE ON DISABILITY
Since 2003,WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies have worked together to help break the ingrained stereotypes about individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities with its week-long initiative, Dialogue on Disability. Here are just a few programs scheduled January 8 through January 14. For a complete list visit WXXI.org/dod.
HAVE YOU LISTENED TO EXITED?
Produced by WXXI News’ Inclusion Desk, it’s a podcast about growing up and trying to find a place where you belong — when you’ve been told your whole life that you’re different. Available wherever you get your podcasts and at ExitedPodcast.org. Dialogue on Disability is made possible through support from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation. The partnership between WXXI and Al Sigl Community of Agencies is supported by the Golisano Foundation and Move to Include, a project designed to build a more inclusive community by inspiring and motivating people to embrace different abilities and include all people in every aspect of community life.”
INDEPENDENT LENS: FLYING THE ENDS UNREST OF THE EARTH MONDAY, JANAURY 8 AT 10PM ON WXXI-TV Follow filmmaker Jennifer Brea’s struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and meet others coping with this often-devastating and little-understood condition in this intimate documentary. SIGHTED EYES/FEELING HEART FRIDAY, JANUARY 19 AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV
Award-winning filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain examines Lorraine Hansberry’s life and work using a remarkable collection of archival footage, home movies, rare photos and unpublished documents. Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” (1959) changed the face of American theater by depicting the limitations of the American dream through the lives of a black family on Chicago’s South Side. The play’s richly drawn characters and unprecedented subject matter attracted record crowds and earned it the coveted top prize from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. This American Masters film features interviews with Hollywood legends such as Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Harry Belafonte, and Louis Gossett Jr., narration by award-winning actress LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and the voice of Tony Awardwinning actress Anika Noni Rose as Hansberry. The result is a timely and revealing portrait of an activist and artist whose popular recognition has, until now, remained long overdue.

THE DURHAM COUNTY POETS FRIDAY, JANUARY 26 AT 7PM AT THE LITTLE THEATRE
TICKETS: $15 IN ADVANCE/ $20 AT THE DOOR
The Durham County Poets are a lively and soulful group, who write and perform an eclectic blend of blues, folk and rock, with tinges of country, gospel and swing tossed in for good measure. They are five seasoned musicians, all of whom are songwriters, who work together individually and collaboratively in composing their music. Delving into a variety of styles and genres, their musical influences include a broad range of artists. From The Band to Dire Straits, Leon Redbone to James Taylor and Neil Young, they have managed to put it all together to create their own musical style. The obvious joie de vivre expressed while performing together is reflected in the good-time feel that the band creates, which has been captivating their audiences consistently since their inception 6 years ago. THE METROPOLITAN OPERA 1/6 at 1:00pm
Humperdinck: Hansel and Gretel A Met English-language holiday presentation, Richard Jones’s clever production of Humperdinck’s fairy-tale opera is based on the Brothers Grimm story. Tara Erraught and Ingeborg Gillebo share the role of Hansel, and Lisette Oropesa and Maureen McKay share the role of Gretel.

In Cavalleria Rusticana, Ekaterina Semenchuk and EvaMaria Westbroek share the role of the woebegone Santuzza, with Aleksandra Kurzak as the hot-blooded Nedda in Pagliacci. Nicola Luisotti conducts Sir David McVicar’s production, which heightens the melo-dramaticaction of this timeless verismo pairing.

1/27 at 1:00pm
Ailyn Pérez is the alluring courtesan and Gerald Finley is the holy man who tries to resist her powers of seduction in Massenet’s tale of sensuality versus spirituality. Emmanuel Villaume conducts.
Sir David McVicar’s ravishing new production offers a splendid backdrop for two extraordinary sopranos sharing the title role of the jealous prima donna: Sonya Yoncheva (pictured above) and Anna Netrebko. Vittorio Grigolo and Marcelo Álvarez alternate in the role of Tosca’s revolutionary artist lover Cavaradossi, with Sir Bryn Terfel, Michael Volle, and Željko Lučić as the depraved police chief Scarpia. Emmanuel Villaume and Bertrand de Billy share conducting duties.
