Dear Friends, June means warm weather, flowers and the annual Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. WXXI will be back on “Jazz Street” covering the events, activities and major acts. Our news team will be reporting live from the Festival, and you can hear Norm Silverstein those reports on AM 1370 and WRUR 88.5 FM. This will be the eighth year that WXXI will be filming some of the best acts to share with audiences locally and across the nation. In addition to presenting some great jazz to television audiences everywhere, our programs help promote Rochester as a center for music, arts and culture! We greatly appreciate the financial support of the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation for helping to make the annual WXXI jazz broadcasts a reality. If you plan to attend the Festival, WXXI’s booth will be stationed at the corner of Main Street and Jazz Street all nine days. There you can pick up information about WXXI programs and events – as well as what’s planned nightly at the Little Theatre. The Little is once again a Festival club venue with live acts twice a night in Theater 1, while the best independent films in Rochester will still be screening in our other theaters. The Little Café will also be open serving food and beverages, and hosting free live music performed by local favorites. Finally, if you get home from the Jazz Fest and want more music — tune in to WXXI-TV at midnight for rebroadcasts of classic episodes of our Rochester Jazz Festival series. (The programs are marked in the TV grid of this magazine.) On a personal note, I was honored to receive the “2016 Media Award” for dedicated service to the community from the Upstate New York Chapter of The Peace Islands Institute. The award was given at their Annual Friendship Dinner and Award Ceremony on May 5. I had the pleasure of speaking at the ceremony and sharing with the guests more about WXXI and our goal of making this a better informed and inclusive community. On the same day, Need to Know host Hélène Biandudi Hofer received the “Champion for Youth Leadership Award” at the Teen Empowerment Center luncheon at the Riverside Convention Center. Hélène is deeply involved with the Teen Empowerment organization, serving as a mentor and sharing their message. Also, if you were among the more than 1,000 individuals who pledged their support for public radio during our Spring Membership Drive last month, thank you! Members make possible the diversity of voices you hear on public radio every day. Reporters, listeners, callers, hosts – people across the world – all contribute to the depth of public radio. By pledging your support, you ensure those voices continue to be heard. Stay tuned for the latest on the Presidential Campaign from WXXI-TV, NPR and WXXI news on the radio, and online at WXXInews.org. And please keep in mind, WXXI does not accept political advertising. You can keep in touch with the latest developments without being bombarded with political ads. That alone is a great payback for your membership gift! I hope to see you at The Little, around Jazz Street, or at one of Rochester’s many summer festivals! Best regards
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI
NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter Friendly Senior Living has evolved since its origins in 1849 with the addition of housing, care and service options to meet the needs of older adults in the Rochester area. Glen Cooper, President and CEO, provides a brief overview of the organization’s communities, including Cloverwood Senior Living. Q. F riendly Senior Living offers a continuum of care. Could you describe the different communities? Cloverwood Senior Living is an independent senior living community in Pittsford featuring patio homes and apartments. Glenmere at Cloverwood offers assisted living, enhanced assisted living, memory care, and respite care. Linden Knoll is an independent apartment community in Brighton, located adjacent to the Friendly Home. The Friendly Home provides skilled nursing care, rehabilitation, memory care, and hospice care. The Lovejoy Transitional Care Center provides short-term rehabilitation.
Q. Why do you think residents and their families choose Cloverwood? The Cloverwood community promotes a passion for life and the freedom to pursue both new and familiar interests. With a variety of patio home and apartment floor plans, residents enjoy carefree living, a spirited cultural arts program, and exceptional dining. They also love that we are a pet-friendly community! The peace of mind that comes with access to a continuum of care is an important factor as well.
Q. W hat are some of the most popular activities offered at Cloverwood Senior Living? Cloverwood is well-known for its wide variety of cultural arts offerings -- everything from music and art appreciation (both on- and off-site) to events and speakers. An indoor pool, fine dining, wooded hiking trail, wellness programs, and visits to local attractions are all very popular. A Cultural Arts Committee comprised of residents represents their interests, and we plan accordingly! Friendly Senior Living is proud to support WXXI and all that this cultural gem offers to our community. Across the continuum, our residents are fans!

RED DOT ON THE OCEAN SATURDAY, JUNE 11 AT 5PM ON WXXI-TV
Matt Rutherford grew up in an obscure Christian cult, struggled with ADHD and learning disabilities, went to drug rehab at the age of 13, and lived on the streets and in juvenile detention. While attending a special high school, Matt discovered that he actually liked to learn and developed a passion to see the world. After graduating, Matt taught himself how to sail and crossed the Atlantic alone to Europe, sailed south to Africa, and then came back across the Atlantic. Obsessed with sailing the Northwest Passage, Matt departed Annapolis, MD in 2011, on an old, scrappy 27-foot sailboat. He spent the next 309 days alone at sea braving the icebergs of the Arctic and the treacherous waters of Cape Horn off the coast of southern Chile. He brought back remarkable video footage as seen in the film and audio logs. This program is part of our Move to Include initiative, a partnership between WXXI and the Golisano Foundation designed to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. To learn more, visit MoveToInclude.org.
Dan Meyers, one of Rochester’s most well-known non-profit leaders, joins WXXI President Norm Silverstein for an in-depth conversation about his 30-year career at Al Sigl Community of Agencies. As president of Al Sigl, Dan has leveraged and expanded the bold vision of the people who founded the organization in 1962. This month, Dan retires from Al Sigl, and in this episode of Norm & Company, he reflects on his career and shares what he plans to do in the future. Norm & Company is a half-hour series hosted by WXXI President Norm Silverstein. In each episode Norm speaks with a long-time Rochesterian, who shares fascinating stories about life in Western New York. To learn more, visit: WXXI.org/normandcompany.

Whad’Ya Know? Ends Production
After 31 years, Wisconsin Public Radio and Michael Feldman will end production of Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know? on June 25. The live, two-hour weekly program, which was created by Michael Feldman in 1985, is among the most successful programs in WPR history. At its peak, the program was heard by more than 1.5 million listeners each week on more than 300 stations. “It may be called Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know?, but it really has been Everybody Who Listens And Comes To The Shows’s Whad’Ya Know? It’s the listeners at home and those who show up that make the show — I am just a conduit,” Feldman joked. “I will be forever grateful to everybody — and their kids — who made the show so much a part of their lives and of mine. Thank you so much!” Stay tuned for what will replace this Saturday morning staple.
