That’s why they have partnered with the American Heart Association to produce a special to do just that – teach Hands-Only CPR! This ground-breaking program taped before a studio audience of cardiac survivors and rescuers, features patient stories, interviews with doctors who were involved in drafting the American Heart Association’s new guidelines, and easy to follow Hands-Only CPR demonstrations. Dear Friends, You’ll notice that CPR in America is featured on the cover of this magazine. Our national healthcare series, Second Opinion, has formed an exciting partnership with the American Heart Norm Silverstein Association to produce this national television special with the goal of teaching all of America Hands-Only CPR! The special is being produced in coordination with the new worldwide CPR guidelines that will be released on October 15 – the same night that CPR in America premieres on WXXI-TV and PBS stations across the country. CPR in America tapes before a live studio audience of survivors and rescuers. It features documentary-style survivor stories, provides easy to understand Hands-Only CPR demonstrations, and shares interviews with the doctors involved in creating the new guidelines as well as some special guests. Why produce a special like this? Because each year, more than 326,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States, and 90% of those people die. Survival rates can double or triple if the victim receives CPR right away. Yet, 70% of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim. But, a 2012 study showed that people who view a Hands-Only CPR demonstration are significantly more likely to deliver lifesaving chest compressions. A television broadcast like this has never been done before in the U.S. and, Second Opinion, the only regularly scheduled health program on public television, is proud to be able to produce this special that will teach Hands-Only CPR to a broader audience than any CPR class could reach! CPR in America airs on Thursday, October 15 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV and I encourage you and your family to tune in and become the next group of potential rescuers.

UNLEASHED: THE PET SHOW FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 AT 12 P.M. Second Opinion also kicks off its 12th season, premiering Thursday, October 8 at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Hosted by Dr. Peter Salgo, the series engages a panel of medical professionals and lay people in honest, in-depth discussions about life-changing medical decisions. Intriguing, real-life medical cases are presented to professionals from different medical specialties, from all over the country. This season looks at Chronic Fatigue, Rosacea, Schizophrenia, ADHD in Adults, Diabetes, and much more. As you can see, there’s a lot of great, important programming planned for October. There’s also some very entertaining series launching this month – like The Widower and The Brain with David Eagleman, and the continuation of Indian Summers. I hope you enjoy it all. Best Regards,

Follow us on facebook.com/unleashedpetshow and on Twitter @UnleashedOnAir using the hashtag #Unleashed. Production funding is provided by Rufus Kendig, The Richard T. Bell Foundation, and The Lilliputian Foundation, Unleashed is now a monthly series. The series is underwritten locally by Natural Pet Foods and The Sartini Group at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.

NEWS&EVENTS

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter In the mid-1800’s there was a class of neglected, poor children who roamed the streets of Rochester begging and pilfering. Unable to attend public school, these children were without direction or support. Rochester Childfirst Network executive director Lynn M. Lubecki explains how a group of civic-minded women took steps to improve the lives of Rochester children more than a century ago and how the organization continues today.

Q. Tell us about the origins of Rochester Childfirst Network (RCN)? When was the business founded?

RCN was founded in 1856 by Mrs. E. Griffith and a group of local women. Mrs. Griffith visited an Industrial school in Brooklyn, which served as a model for a school in Rochester. That school became the Industrial School of Rochester, then Rochester Children’s Nursery, and today, Rochester Childfirst Network.

Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about RCN? RCN is a valuable asset providing childcare, universal prekindergarten, before and after school child care, summer programs, special education and early intervention services to children in the Greater Rochester area. We also provide exceptional professional development to our staff, family child care providers, and other early childhood educators to ready them for their experiences with our children. In addition, RCN provides support to in-home child care providers whose homes are regulated by NYS Office of Children and Family Services.

Q. What achievements are you most proud of?

It is a frequent occurrence at community events around town that, when RCN is mentioned, inevitably, someone says, “I am an RCN alum!!” We’re also proud of the difference we make in the lives of children and their families each day.

Q. What are your greatest challenges as an organization?

Lynn M. Lubecki Executive Director

Unpredictable and sudden changes in funding, and high demands due to compliance mandates are challenges. The increasing academic demands of our young children challenge us as an organization and as part of our community. Other challenges include the loss of so many from the teaching field, specifically in early childhood, along with competitive wages and compensation challenges. CAMPAIGN UPDATE The “Go Public” Campaign is a critical $17 million effort for the future of WXXI. Thanks to the support of good friends like you, we have passed the $15 million mark! One of the major goals of the Campaign is to build our endowment. By building our endowment, we are ensuring a robust WXXI for future generations. Technology is changing at such a rapid pace that we need to be sure that we have the resources to be able to provide exceptional programming that meets the needs of our community. While you can make direct gifts to our endowment fund, what many people decide to do is to include WXXI in their estate plans. There are some very easy ways to do that. A simple bequest in your will allows you to designate either a fixed dollar amount or a percentage of your estate to WXXI. If you have any questions about how to include WXXI in your estate, or if you have already done so, please contact Kathy Reed at 258-0319 or at kreed@wxxi.org.

You can also designate WXXI as a beneficiary of your life insurance or retirement plan. You do not need an attorney to do this. You simply fill out a form to include WXXI to receive a percentage of the benefit. It may be done online as well on your plan’s website.

Let’s make a bright future for WXXI and our community!

I’LL HAVE WHAT PHIL’S HAVING MONDAYS AT 10 P.M., OCTOBER 5 THROUGH NOVEMBER 2 ON WXXI-TV

Join us for an international culinary exploration with host Phil Rosenthal, creator of the TV hit “Everybody Loves Raymond,” and one of Hollywood’s funniest producers. This new series follows Phil as he explores culinary capitals of the world and dines on regional specialties, all while pushing the boundaries of his palate – and the viewer’s – in his funny, unforgettable travels. In his search for the best of a city’s specialty, or one of its most unusual cuisines, Phil entertains the audience while making connections all over the world.

In I’ll Have What Phil’s Having, Phil sets his sights on kitchens both on and off the wellworn gastronomic path, where he meets those who are keeping traditions alive and creating new ones. Viewers travel with him from Hong Kong to Barcelona, from Paris to Tokyo, and from a three-star Michelin restaurant in an Italian palazzo to a Los Angeles bakery training former gang members.

Examining the Nuclear Deal with Iran Sunday, oct. 4 at 9pm ON AM 1370

On July 14, the U.S. and five other world powers signed an agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear capability for the next 10-15 years in exchange for lifting crippling economic sanctions. The clock is now ticking for Congress to approve or reject the deal, and politicians on both sides of the aisle are clamoring to voice their views before the deadline. “America Abroad” we go beneath the headlines to explore the proposed deal.

The U.S. has always been a beacon for those searching for safe haven and a place to build a better life. Though the barriers are high, hundreds of thousands of people leave their homes in Mexico, Honduras and other Central American countries and head for the U.S.

We explore an effort to offer every student a personalized curriculum. Plus, how college essays could boost grade point averages - and help society. Then, kids are learning machines, but maybe we should put away the textbooks and let them play.

Road to Joy Host Maureen Rich

Shares Her Inspiration for Her Tuesday Night Show My best memories have always been merged with music. Certain songs can evoke long forgotten moments. Dancing around the living room as a little girl to Calendar Girl by Neil Sedaka, or How Much is That Doggie In The Window? by Patti Page. Laying in bed at night with a transistor radio listening to Blood Sweat & Tears, or Marvin Gaye, or Janis Joplin. Holding hands with a boy for the first time while roller skating at school, while The Jackson 5 sang ABC. Fast forward to high school, with Dark Side Of The Moon played endlessly, Led Zepplin, Neil Young, The Grateful Dead. I met my husband while we were both going to hear live music at The Red Creek. Our first date was a concert. Our lives are intertwined with a soundtrack that has mixed every life event with all kinds of music. I always wanted to play the accordion. I’ve come to the realization it’s just too heavy! I’ve moved on to the ukulele, and singing. It’s just right. And so joyful! So, music has been a constant passion through my entire life. When the opportunity came to host a weekly radio show, I knew I wanted to share those feelings of joy, and passion, happiness, sorrow, and comfort that is my musical journey. That is my Road To Joy! I hope you’ll come along. Photo: richard ashworth

The 46ers They conquered the Adirondack Mountains, and now they’re coming to the Little Theatre.

The 46ers is a documentary that takes a look at the men and women who successfully reach the summits of all 46 “high peaks” in New York’s Adirondack State Park. The mountains that rise over 4,000-feet in elevation are known as the “high peaks” and the people who scale all of them are aptly called the “46ers.”

Saturday, October 3 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Aside from showing the film, we’ll hear from both filmmakers and the adventurous individuals who took on these 46 peaks. Director Blake Cortright will introduce the film, and participate in a post-screening panel discussion with 46er Jet Thomas, and someone who’s looking to join the exclusive club, David Schott. Due to popular demand, a second screening was added. So, get your $6 tickets today!

One Take Doc Series

The Black Panthers

Vanguard of a Revolution Tuesday, October 20 at 7 p.m. This is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, and its significance to the broader American culture. Tickets are $8.

Over the course of nine days, more than 30 films will screen in theaters 1 and 2, including buzzworthy movies like Tangerine (pictured above).
