OVERDOSE:
INSIDE THE EPIDEMIC THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 8-9PM ON WXXI-TV Just eight weeks after their son Patrick died of a heroin overdose, Mary and Joe Mullin courageously share their story in this Second Opinion onehour special. They tell their very personal experience of Patrick’s decline from alcohol and marijuana use, into opioid and heroin addiction. A closeknit family, the Mullins watched their son grow from a happy infant into a star lacrosse player and student. But even as he was surrounded by a loving family and friends, his addiction took over his life. The Mullins and Second Opinion host Dr. Peter Salgo are joined by experts Louis E. Baxter, Sr., MD, President and CEO of the Professional Assistance Program of New Jersey, Inc. and Lisa Y. Harris, MD, Chief Physician Informaticist, and former Senior VP and Chief Clinical Officer at Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital. The show also feature’s Patrick Seche, MS, addiction specialist from the University of Rochester Medical Center. In front of a live studio audience, they discuss this drug epidemic, offer advice on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of drug abuse, and share cutting-edge information on prevention and effective treatment.

DEAR FRIENDS, Last month I shared details about a Second Opinion special on addiction that would air in October. Our production team has been working hard to bring you an evening of valuable Norm Silverstein information as our community, and communities across the county, face an opioid problem that law enforcement, health care providers and local health departments are calling an “epidemic.” Overdose: Inside the Epidemic, a Second Opinion special, airs Thursday, October 26 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV. According to state and local health departments, the number of deaths related to opioid and heroin use is on the rise in Monroe County. In order to assist in addressing this important issue, our national health series Second Opinion will devote an hour-long special to the problem of opioid and heroin abuse and overdose. Overdose: Inside the Epidemic features a local couple whose son struggled with drug abuse, opioid use and heroin addiction, and eventually died from a heroin overdose. His parents courageously share their story – telling their personal experience of his decline. Immediately after the hour-long special, WXXI-TV will host a town-hall style forum to continue the conversation along with a live phone bank where individuals can call in with questions and learn more about local resources to help with addiction. The televised forum will air from 9 to 9:30 p.m. and we’ll keep the phone banks open for an additional half hour to answer your questions. It is our intent to empower individuals and families to speak out, reach out, and improve their own awareness of local resources for addiction. Special thanks to the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation for supporting the town hall forum with a generous grant and to Second Opinion’s major funder, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, for their continued support of our national health care series and for assistance in providing resource materials for this special. Following our special Second Opinion programming and town hall, WXXI-TV will air Reversing the Stigma at 9:30 p.m. This documentary includes stories from New Yorkers in recovery from substance use disorders. The film also examines the steps New York State is taking to address addiction and to support people whose lives it has touched. Overdose: Inside the Epidemic serves as the premiere of a whole new season of Second Opinion. All new half-hour episodes will air Thursdays at 8:30 p.m., beginning November 2. This season, the series introduces each patient in their own home to provide a personal look at the circumstances surrounding their medical condition, and the patient joins a panel of experts before a live studio audience to continue the discussion. “Season 14” covers a variety of topics including transgender health, Crohn’s Disease, Type 1 Diabetes, OCD, eating disorders, and Atrial Fibrillation. As you can see, Second Opinion is working hard to bring you important information on critical health issues. This kind of vital programming is what you can expect from your public media station. We hope you’ll tune in Thursday, October 26 at 8 p.m. for Overdose: Inside the Epidemic then join in the conversation, and that you make Second Opinion a staple of your Thursday evening viewing.
Best regards,
Norm Silverstein

NEWS&EVENTS
Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER Since 1949, MARY CARIOLA CHILDREN’S CENTER has been inspiring and empowering children, youth and young adults with complex disabilities through personalized education and life skill solutions. The agency has two main service components: a large school for 3-21 year olds, and six residences for 44 individuals. We connect with Karen Zandi, President and CEO, to learn more about Mary Cariola. Q. Can you describe the scope of your organization’s work? In addition to educating individuals with developmental disabilities and complex medical conditions, we provide Snoezelen, speech, behavior, vision, physical and occupational therapies, daily nursing, behavior services, and psychiatric, nutritional and neurological consultations. For families, we provide social work assistance to understand the various systems that they engage. Q. What 3 words best describe Mary Cariola Children’s Center? Innovational, inspirational and empowering Q. What are some of the greatest challenges facing children and families in our community? The needs of the kids who come to us are constantly changing; from individuals with developmental disabilities and complex medical conditions to youth facing autism, high risk behavior and communications difficulties. We’re also seeing an increase in children who are blind, visually impaired and/or deaf. Due to a great disparity in funds, resources are also a challenge, which is why we seek community support. Q. How does Mary Cariola address these needs? We’ve had to create more options to support families, provide more education and ensure families have active, engaged social workers to help them when there are service gaps. Our innovative and creative staff of educators, therapists, social workers and direct care professionals help us provide highly coordinated, consistent, and customized services.
KAREN ZANDI PRESIDENT AND CEO
Q. Can you tell us about the new residential home in Penfield? The state-of-the art home will serve children and youth who are currently living in our Browncroft Boulevard home; a home that has been wonderful for us for many years but no longer meets the complex needs of the children living there. A respite room is an added benefit that will allow families to entrust their children’s care to our staff so that they may tend to other life events. WRUR-FM 88.5 Spotlight American Routes is a weekly two-hour public radio program produced in New Orleans, presenting a broad range of American music — blues and jazz, gospel and soul, old-time country and rockabilly, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and Latin, roots rock and pop, avant-garde and classical. Now in our 20th year on the air, American Routes explores the shared musical and cultural threads in these American styles and genres of music — and how they are distinguished.
SUNDAYS FROM 4PM TO 6PM ON WRUR-FM
The program also presents documentary features and artist interviews. Our conversations include Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, B.B. King, Dr. John, Dave Brubeck, Abbey Lincoln, Elvis Costello, Ray Charles, Randy Newman, McCoy Tyner, Lucinda Williams, Rufus Thomas, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others. Join us as we ride legendary trains, or visit street parades, instrument-makers, roadside attractions and juke joints, and meet tap dancers, fishermen, fortunetellers and more. The songs and stories on American Routes describe both the community origins of our music, musicians and cultures — the “roots”— and the many directions they take over time — the “routes.”
