THE CIVIL
WAR MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 through FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, AT 9PM ON WXXI-TV
“
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the original broadcast of The Civil War, WXXI-TV presents a newly restored high-definition version of Ken Burns’ docu-series that brings to life America’s most destructive—and defining—conflict. Over the course of two months, 50,000 feet of the original 16mm film negative, which was preserved at the George Eastman House, was scanned frame by frame at 4K, the resolution used for Ultra High Definition.
The Civil War
series has never been seen in such visual clarity,” said Daniel J. White, who handled the restoration. “The colors are brighter and you will see more details in the images. With this transfer, The Civil War will be preserved at the highest quality for generations to come.”
The Civil War tells the saga of celebrated generals and ordinary soldiers, a heroic and transcendent president and a country that had to divide itself in two in order to become one. Credit: Courtesy of Courtesy General Motors

Dear Friends, Last month, at the Park Avenue Festival, a gentleman came up to the WXXI/Little booth to tell us how grateful he was for our live broadcast of Temple B’rith Kodesh’s Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services on Classical 91.5. He explained that with his disability, it’s hard for him to get to Temple, and having the services on the Norm Silverstein radio makes him feel connected. We also hear from people who enjoy our special concerts around the holidays, weekly broadcasts of With Heart and Voice, and other programs that reflect the diversity of our community. I love hearing stories like these because it validates the work we do. Public media is for every one—accessible to you and me, to children and senior citizens, to low-income families and the middle class, and to the gentleman who visited our booth. It’s accessible because public media is the only source of free local, national and international news, public affairs, and cultural programming. It also provides content that enables our children to succeed in the classroom. PBS Kids programs like Peg + Cat, Curious George, and Dinosaur Train help to make sure youngsters are ready to learn when they enter kindergarten. That same mission holds true for our state-wide program, Homework Hotline, where master teachers help kids work through their homework assignments live on television. Now in its 25th season, Homework Hotline kicks off Monday, September 14 at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Funded in part by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), it airs Monday through Thursday throughout the school year. On the topic of children’s programming, you may have heard or read that Sesame Workshop, the company that produces Sesame Street, has a new production deal that extends the program to HBO. I want to assure you that Sesame Street will continue to be available on WXXI, free and accessible whether you watch on cable, satellite or over-the-air. The HBO agreement makes funding available for new episodes of the program and they will also be available on WXXI. In this rapidly changing media world, we constantly look for new ways and new partners to help bring quality program to the public. I also believe that the rapidly changing media environment makes public media more vital than ever as a source for fair and balanced news. In August, NPR’s President & CEO, Jarl Mohn, made a visit to the station. He talked with our staff, was interviewed on Connections with Evan Dawson, and joined our Trustees and guests for a special lunch. Jarl agreed that the decline of traditional journalism makes public media even more significant. He said we need to be a leader in the news industry and that it’s more important than ever for our news teams to tell stories in an interesting and engaging way. We couldn’t agree more and I believe that our news staff strives to do just that in every story they file. Our coverage on Rochester’s Photonics Institute, our series on Heroin at Home, and our in-depth coverage of the impact of the Affordable Care Act are prime examples. (If you missed these stories on the air, you can still catch up online at WXXInews.org.) Jarl also said that WXXI provides the perfect balance of national, international and local news coverage. That’s what makes public media work! As a member, you help support the work we do and we thank you. If you pledged for the first time during our Summer Membership Campaign, welcome to the family. If you renewed your gift or became a sustaining member, we are honored that you are committed to your public broadcasting station. Best regards,
Norm Silverstein norms@wxxi.org @normWXXI

Q&A WITH A WXXI Underwriter If you’ve ever admired the holiday decorating in stores and offices, Plant Designs, Inc., may be the “elves” behind the scenes! Owner John Hudak describes the business originally founded in 1975 as an exterior landscaping company, but since 1988 has been focusing exclusively on interior landscaping: Q. W hat do you consider, when designing interior plantings, that isn’t an issue for outdoor desings? Mainly light levels. Except for a few high light areas, the interior environment is generally low light so plant selection is important. Sometimes heat/air conditioning sources can be problematic. Remember that there are no indoor plants—only plants we bring indoors. So by definition, the interior environment is a hostile environment. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Plant Designs? In addition to providing holiday décor landscaping for interior commercial properties, our seasonal services are available for residential home owners. We pride ourselves on being an employee-friendly company by offering benefits to both full-time and part-time employees. Q. Tell us about Vitazyme, your environmentally-friendly product available locally and internationally. Plant Designs sells a plant biostimulant called Vitazyme. Vitazyme invigorates the naturally occurring plant/soil relationship which helps plants live up to their genetic potential. Vitazyme is approved as an organic input in both the U.S. and Europe. Our primary sales are overseas where we sell to agro-chemical distributors who sell to farmers. We do sell locally as well. Q. Are there any current design ideas trending for indoor plantings? For indoor there are two trends. One is for more interesting, colorful containers. I always say that containers are at least one-half of the design element, or probably more. You can really impact the design with good container selection. The other trend is the living wall concept. There are numerous systems but they all result in a green wall of plants. These are both interesting and good for the interior environment. www.plantdesigns.com Residential Display

SPECIAL AMERICAN GRADUATE PROGRAMMING As the school season begins AM 1370 brings listeners four radio documentaries that address important issue in education. “Teaching Teachers,” airing Sunday, September 13 at 9 p.m. looks at what it would take to improve American teaching on a wide scale. The producers meet with researchers and visit U.S. schools that are taking a page from Japan and rethinking the way they approach the idea of teacher improvement. The other three documentaries in the series are described below – and all four are part of WXXI’s American Graduate initiative, designed to help tackle the high school dropout crisis in Rochester. The initiative focuses on providing quality content to inform about the issues and connect community members to resources and solutions to support educational success from cradle to career. To learn more visit: WXXI.org/grad. Support for American Graduate is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Newman’s Own Foundation.

STUDENT VETERANS & THE NEW GI BILL Sunday, sept. 20 at 9pm ON AM 1370
Sunday, sept. 27 at 9pm
Before the civil rights movement, African Americans were largely barred from white-dominated institutions of higher education. And so black Americans, and their white supporters, founded their own schools, which came to be known as Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Hear first-person testimony from students about why they chose an HBCU; and travel to an HBCU that’s in the process of reinventing itself.
The longest war in American history is drawing to a close. Now, those serving are coming home, and many hope to use higher education to build better lives. This program explores how the GI Bill of 1944 revolutionized the lives of millions of young veterans, institutions of higher education, and American society at large.
In the 1940s, British headmaster Kurt Hahn set up a wilderness school to teach the skills young men needed to survive WWII. Fifty years later, Hahn’s ideas inspired the founding of a network of public schools in the U.S.

Stuck in the Psychedelic Era with the Hermit

Stuck in the psychedelic Era saturdays at 10 pm on wrur-fm
“Stuck in the Psychedelic Era” is a weekly two-hour radio show featuring music from roughly the years 1964-70. The show is rooted in the music generated by self-contained American bands of the late 1960s (and their British inspirations), yet is constantly expanding beyond those roots to create an eclectic blend of music unlike anything else in modern radio. Much of the music is taken directly from vintage vinyl, scratches and all. The rest comes from Compact Disc compilations and re-issues of original albums, all taken from the Hermit’s personal collection.

Listen To Me Marlon
7 p.m. Tuesday, September 8
Our One Take Documentary series continues this month with Listen To Me Marlon. Unbeknownst to the public, Marlon Brando created a vast archive of personal audio materials over the course of his lifetime. Now for the first time those audio recordings come to life in Listen to Me Marlon. Charting his exceptional career as an actor and his extraordinary life away from the stage and screen, the film reveals the complexities and contradictions that were Marlon Brando by telling the story in his own words.
