Wycliffe Canada Vision Statement: A world where translated Scriptures lead to transformed lives among people of all languages. Translating Scripture, Transforming Lives Together with partners worldwide, we serve indigenous people through language-related ministries, especially Bible translation and literacy. Our goal is to empower local communities to express God’s love in both Word and deed—for personal, social and spiritual transformation. Wycliffe personnel currently serve globally in more than 1,300 language projects for about 936 million people. However, about 2,200 minority language groups still wait for the power of God working through their own languages. Wycliffe invites you to participate in this effort through prayer, service and funding. Canadian Head Office: 4316 10 St NE, Calgary, AB T2E 6K3. In Others’ Words “ The Bible, and it alone, with nothing added to it nor taken away from it by man, is the sole and sufficient guide for each individual, at all times and in all circumstances.”
—Sir Michael Faraday (1791-1867), celebrated English chemist, physicist, discoverer and inventor.
T
his is the third in a series of three calendars highlighting the world’s regions with the greatest need for Bible translation. In 2009, we focused on Mainland Asia. This past year, we emphasized Central Africa and Nigeria. In this 2011 calendar, we present images from the remaining highestneed region: the Indonesia-Pacific Archipelago. Of the 2,250 languages worldwide still needing Bible translation to begin, nearly one-third of them—numbering more than 700— are located in this area, which consists of the nation of Indonesia and the Pacific Islands. By the Pacific Islands, we mean Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the thousands of islands of the southern Pacific Ocean, widely scattered along the northern and southern edges of the equator (see map below). Two centres of concentration are located in the IndonesiaPacific Archipelago. The first is Indonesia, with 340 languages needing Bible translation. The other is PNG and several other islands with about 360. These large language figures represent tens of millions of human beings without the Scriptures in a language that can speak to their hearts. But statistics can be dispassionate. To help make these people more personal for you, we are again presenting photographs of men, women and children from the Indonesia-Pacific Archipelago with each month of this calendar. Once again, we hope that you will make this your main home or office calendar, tracking important dates and personal events throughout 2011. And as you do, we trust it will remind you that there remains a huge unfinished job in the IndonesiaPacific Archipelago. Please pray that: • Bible translation will start soon for the remaining language groups there. • Wycliffe and other organizations can partner with local churches and agencies to finish the task in this politically, linguistically and geographically challenging region. • God will supply the required resources—personnel, prayer and finances—to bring the translated Word, whether in printed or non-printed form. May God especially place the Bibleless language groups of the Indonesia-Pacific Archipelago on our hearts in 2011.
May God especially place the Bibleless language groups of the Indonesia-Pacific Archipelago on our hearts in 2011.
Editor’s Note: When we published the two previous calendars in this series, some readers asked why we didn’t give content details with each photo. Because of religious and political sensitivities on the field, this is not always possible. So, to be consistent, we decided not to include information for any of the photos. As we continue with the same approach in this issue, we trust you will understand.
