Here comes the summer – and with it, a brand new brochure. Featuring an array of fantastic events and screenings (including lots of stuff for the little ones!), there’s plenty of opportunities to come in out of the summer heat – least of all, our yummy ice-cream!

The Pow! Comedy Festival sees the end of our spring live season, but it’ll be returning in September in full force with a stonking show from award-winning comedian Sean Hughes, a moving and thought provoking production of The Bogus Woman (“Essential watching” The Independent), and the Hendrix Project – a reinterpretation of Jimi Hendrix songs by acclaimed folk performer (and member of Bellowhead) Benji Kirkpatrick. As always, we’re keeping our Satellite Live! dish busy beaming in an international programme from the RSC, The Shakespeare’s globe, ENO, Royal Opera House, AND the National Theatre. We’ve also packed in a bursting film programme that’s got all the new blockbusters and films for families, plus a few other hand-picked gems that we’re sure you’ll enjoy!

Duncan Oakley also joins our Birthday Bash, and will power out a deft blend of stupidity and truly impressive musicianship with hilarious results.

Remembered for his pioneering, exceptional ability as a guitarist, on (and off) stage antics, Hendrix’s legacy extends to a wealth of great songs. Leaving behind the guitar altogether (Hendrix did that rather well…), Benji tackles his material on bouzouki, banjo and mandolin, and will perform the songs of Hendrix like you’ve never heard them before.

In this special lecture Doug will tell of the epic expedition and climb, how his life led up to this defining moment, and where it took him upon his return from the summit. OTHELLO by William Shakespeare LIVE Wed 26 August: 7pm £12.50 Full (£10.50 Concession)* Othello is the greatest general of his age: a fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice. But he is also an outsider who has created enemies of his own men, who are driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him. As they plot in the shadows, Othello realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride. After more than a decade working in film and television on projects from Star Wars to Holby City, Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play Shakespeare’s Othello. Hugh will play opposite Lucian Msamati in the role of Iago, returning to the RSC following his role as Pericles in 2006. The production is directed by Iqbal Khan (Much Ado About Nothing, 2012).

THE BEAUX’ STRATAGEM by George Farquhar Thu 3 September: 7pm £12.50 Full (£10.50 Concession)* The ‘Beaux’: Mr Aimwell and Mr Archer, two charming, dissolute young men who have blown their fortunes in giddy London. Shamed and debt-ridden, they flee to provincial Lichfield. Their ‘Stratagem’: to marry for money. Lodged at the local inn, they encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles: a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French Count, a furious butler, and a strange, turbulent priest. But when the Beaux meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs Sullen they are the ones most at risk. This wild comedy of love and cash is directed by Simon Godwin (Man and Superman).

by William Shakespeare Tue 8 September: 7.30pm £12.50 Full (£10.50 Concession)* When Caesar returns to Rome from the wars a virtual dictator, Brutus and his republican friends resolve that his ambition must be curbed – which in Rome can mean only one thing: the great general must be assassinated. But once the deed is done, the idealistic conspirators must reckon with the forces of a new power bloc. Shakespeare’s tense drama of high politics reveals the emotional currents that flow between men in power with themes that still resonate even today.

When Antony quarrels with his fellow leaders and throws in his lot with Cleopatra, his infatuation threatens to split the Empire in two. Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence. Olivier Award-winner Eve Best’s Cleopatra ‘kisses the audience’ (Guardian) with her ‘magnetically humorous’ (Evening Standard) performance.

by William Shakespeare Ballet in three acts LIVE Tue 22 September: 7.15pm £17 Full (£15 Concession)* Kenneth MacMillan’s famous version of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy set to Prokofiev’s magnificent score. This Romeo and Juliet is rich in the swaggering colour of Verona street life and in sword fights and celebrations, but MacMillan’s focus is always on the complex emotions of the young lovers – especially on Juliet as she journeys through the delirious happiness of first love to a shocked, adult perception of her fate. Juliet is one of the most coveted of all ballerina roles, and as MacMillan’s ballet enters its 50th year it resonates as deeply with audiences today as when it was first seen half a century ago.

MON 27

He is simply one of the funniest comedians on the circuit - even voted ‘ UK Circuit Comedian of the year’ by his fellow comics in 2014, so it’s official. Duncan Oakley also joins our Birthday Bash, and will power out a deft blend of stupidity and truly impressive musicianship with hilarious results.

WELCOME

MON 27

Fri 19 June: 8pm £9 in advance (£11 on the door)* Happy Birthday to Wyeside comedy 2 years old! We’ve been trying to book Gavin Webster for the last two years, and finally we’ve done it!
