As I’m sure most of you already know, Wyeside is an independently run registered charity - which means that we are a not-for-profit organisation. Therefore, any profit we make goes straight back into funding our diverse programme of over 1,500 events per year! But when it comes to financing those special projects, we need a little extra help… and that’s where our Friends come in.

Over the years money from the Friends of Wyeside scheme has helped us with many major projects including the refurbishment our Market Theatre and Gallery, the installation of 3D digital projectors and major repairs to the stonework of our historic Grade II listed building. Money from Friends of Wyeside donations is almost always used as match funding against grants, which means that donations made to Wyeside often bring in three times that amount. Last year alone, the Friends of Wyeside contributed to a whopping five different projects – the refurbishment of our west wall, the replacement of our exterior poster cases, the purchase of new sound & lighting equipment, new CCTV and a new Hearing-Loop system for the hard of hearing.

You can become a Wyeside Friend from as little as £5 a month. To top it all off, you’ll gain a whole wealth of benefits – plus the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to keep Wyeside alive for generations to come! As a Wyeside Friend you will have the exclusive option to reserve your tickets and pay later, private viewing invitations to new gallery exhibitions, advance notification of high profile shows, exclusive quarterly newsletters, and an invitation to Wyeside’s Christmas party! To become a friend of Wyeside simply collect an application from our Box Office or download one from our website. Feel free to email marketing@wyeside.co.uk if you wish for an application form to be sent to you directly.

WINNER OF

“BEST INTERNATIONAL SHOW” AT THE HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL 2010

£8 Full (£5 for ages 11 and under)*

Burton vividly presents the life of the great Welsh actor in his own words, from humble beginnings to Hollywood megastardom. Beautiful women (not least Liz Taylor), alcohol, wealth, stage and screen are the threads woven into this sad, happy, exuberant, often hilarious one-man show. Drink was the only real anodyne to his deteriorating health and mental state, his doomed tempestuous relationship with Taylor and his constant guilt over the abandonment of his family.

Builth Wells Young Farmer’s Club return to Wyeside for their annual concert, showcasing a wonderful array of talent by members who will have competed at the Brecknock YFC Drama Festival at Theatr Brycheiniog the previous week. There will be the usual mix of drama, entertainment, song and dance. Indeed, something for everyone. So come along and enjoy! * Credit/Debit Card Charge - 50p per transaction

Thu 16 March: 7.30pm

£12 Full (£10 Concession)*

£13 Full (£12 Concession)*

Theatre legends Jon Haynes and David Woods of Ridiculusmus are back with a funny, fragile and profound fable based on ground-breaking medical research and real-life war testimonies.

Three of Europe’s finest acoustic guitarists collaborate in an exciting celebration of their Celtic roots. Soig Sibéril from Brittany, Ian Melrose from Scotland and Dylan Fowler from Wales are all international soloists in their own right and have albums released on the prestigious German label, Acoustic Music Records.

Ex-soldier and budding rock star Zach has withdrawn into a cardboard box in a kitchen in West Wales. His friend Ieuan arrives offering recovery - in the form of a capsule containing 3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine with which he claims to have successfully treated his own post-traumatic stress. Parachuted into their recently fractured pasts, Zach and Ieuan swing between dreamboat heroism and woozy enlightenment via a head warping exchange on patriotism, conflict and supermarket shopping that will tickle, move and appal you in equal measure. * Credit/Debit Card Charge 50p per transaction

In this performance they showcase their unique styles that draw on their respective Celtic roots and a world of musical experiences. The trio have developed a distinctive ensemble sound that fuses their experience as international soloists into a rich, unique sound. You can expect passion, skill, emotion and musical riches that reveal our common heritage.

‘This is music with heart, soul and, above all a bullish determination to ignore recognised boundaries.’ Chris Jones – BBC online * Credit/Debit Card Charge - 50p per transaction

SAINT JOAN

Music by Max Richter LIVE Wed 8 February: 7.15pm £17 Full (£15 Concession)*

Bernard Shaw LIVE Thu 16 February: 7pm £13.50 Full (£11.50 Concession)*

The pioneering literary work of Virginia Woolf is the inspiration for multi-award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor’s brilliant triptych for The Royal Ballet.

Gemma Arterton is Joan of Arc, broadcast live from the Donmar Warehouse. Bernard Shaw’s classic play follows the life and trial of a young country girl who declares a bloody mission to drive the English from France. As one of the first Protestants and nationalists, she threatens the very fabric of the feudal society and the Catholic Church across Europe. Josie Rourke (Coriolanus, Les Liaisons Dangereuses) directs Gemma Arterton (Gemma Bovery, Nell Gwynn, Made in Dagenham) as Joan of Arc in this electrifying production.

McGregor has long been at the cutting edge of ballet, working with collaborators from across the artistic world, and in this critically acclaimed work he combines themes from three of Woolf’s landmark novels – Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves – with elements of her letters, essays and diaries. Acclaimed British composer Max Richter (Infra, Sum and Recomposed by Max Richter:Vivaldi,The Four Seasons) creates a specially commissioned score incorporating electronic and live music.

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY Ballet in three acts Music by Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky LIVE Tue 28 February: 7pm £17 Full (£15 Concession)* A perennial delight and a much-loved classic, The Royal Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty combines the best of classical ballet, with all its charms and virtuosity, splendid music and talented dancers. First choreographed to Tchaikovsky’s great musical score by Marius Petipa in Russia in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty has wonderful ensembles, solos including the Rose Adage as Princess Aurora meets her suitors, and of course the concluding celebratory dances for the happy union of prince and princess. The Royal Ballet’s landmark staging was revived for the Company’s 75th anniversary celebrations in 2006. The designs by Oliver Messel, one of the greatest stage designers of the 20th century, were restored and updated for this production by Peter Farmer. The rich evocations of the baroque opulence of a royal court, the panoramic journey of the prince to the overgrown castle and the colourful characters in this famous fairytale make this Sleeping Beauty a spectacle like no other.

Despite this, and perhaps because of it, Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, often suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide.

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the most popular of all operas, with ravishing music and a heart-breaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband. Much loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time at Covent Garden, in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s stunningly beautiful production. The exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists’ romanticized views of Japan. Puccini’s music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton (sung by exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente) of his young, innocent bride. Well known moments include the impassioned aria ‘Un bel di’ (One fine day) as the abandoned Cio-Cio-San clings vainly to her dreams. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano, acclaimed for his interpretations of Italian opera, conducts this intense and gripping journey from light and excitement to darkness and self-sacrifice.

Opera in three acts by Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky Sung in Russian (with subtitles) LIVE Sat 22 April: 5.55pm £17 Full (£15 Concession/£13 Season Offer)*

George Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of ‘Emeralds’, while the fire of ‘Rubies’ comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendour of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in ‘Diamonds’.

Anna Netrebko reprises one of her most acclaimed roles as Tatiana, the naive heroine of Tchaikovsky’s opera adapted from Pushkin’s timeless novel. Dmitri Hvorostovsky stars as the title character, who rejects Tatiana’s love until it’s too late. Robin Ticciati, Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera, conducts the revival of Deborah Warner’s staging. Alexey Dolgov sings the role of Onegin’s friend turned rival Lenski, with Elena Maximova as Tatiana’s sister Olga, and Štefan Kocán as Prince Gremin.

Jewels is a masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet and indeed of The Royal Ballet itself: the virtuoso choreography of Balanchine, the intensity of the soloists and the precision of the entire Company. TREES, CHILDHOOD MEMORIES AND FANTASIES PAINTINGS BY LES BALL

From Wed 7th December – end of January 2017 Les Ball lives near Builth Wells, but his love of trees began in 1973 when he was working as Head Gardener amongst some giants, on a private estate in South West Scotland. Growing hundreds of trees from seed, he produced many bonsai, inspired by his interest in Japanese art. Hag stones feature in some of his work, and they represent his happy memories of childhood holidays when he and his mother would spend hours searching for them along pebbled beaches. His influences include Gaudi, Tiffany and Hundertwasser. Also the Studio Ghibli film collection, such as Howl’s Moving Castle and the Dutch cartoon jigsaw artist Jan Van Hoasteren. lwbartish@gmail.com | lwbartist.wordpress.com

RHAYADER ART GROUP From Tue 7th February – end of March 2017 Rhayader Art Group was founded in 2005 with the aim of providing a focal point for local artists in Rhayader, and the surrounding district, to meet and enjoy art. Its aim is to create a very informal, friendly and encouraging environment where members learn from each other. Sharing ideas on subjects, techniques and materials, and also getting ‘fresh eyes’ to view your work is very much the order of the day. This exhibition focuses on the natural landscape, plant life and wildlife displaying the range of very different styles and media used within the group. The members are very pleased to celebrate their 12th anniversary with this exhibition at Wyeside.

Wyeside stands prominently on the end of Builth Wells’ famous Wye river bridge, opposite the Llewellyn mural. The centre is only 100 metres walk from the Groe public car park, which is free from 6pm. When you leave the car park, turn left, walk past the Builth bull statue and Wyeside is facing you at the top of the rise.

But - especially if you’re making a long journey - we advise you to check (with our Box Office, or on our website).
