Orchid Care 101–Disease Management Saturday, June 15 • 11:00 a.m. Growing Orchids in SWFL is easy and very rewarding. If you attended the Orchid 101 lecture in April then you know that growing orchids does not need a horticultural license, degree or diploma….just a semi green thumb and a love of beauty! However, there are some basic items that one must always keep in mind when growing orchids: to water, to feed and watch for diseases. In the second 101 series we will discuss how to identify orchids which need attention for disease management and their treatments. We will also discuss watering techniques, and then when to feed and when to allow your orchids to sleep. Class is $10 per person with a minimum of 10 people registered by Tuesday, June 11. Register with the HOA Office and bring your plants that day that you think need an Orchid Doctor!

We all have family who come into town; instead of buying these items why not help someone in need. If you are willing to share or need items to be shared, please contact Margie Lutz at 390-9305 or email lmlutz@embarqmail.com. Don’t forget to mention your name, phone number, the items and if you are seasonal or permanent. We thank you in advance!

Hooked on Books

June 12, 2013 Hooked on Books will meet on June 12, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Town Center. We will be discussing “The Aviator’s Wife” by Melanie Benjamin with Joan Tassone leading the discussion. Drawing on the rich history of the twentieth century – from the late twenties to the mid sixties - The Aviator’s Wife is a vividly imagined novel of a complicated marriage; revealing both its dizzying highs and its devastating lows. July 10, 2013 The book under discussion in July is “Wild. A Pacific Journey” by Cheryl Strayed. Lela Gahweiler will lead our discussion as we meet at 1 p.m. in the Town Center. After the shock of her mother’s unexpected death, 22 year old Cheryl Strayed became totally lost in the world: her family splintered, her young marriage collapsed. In this moving memoir, the author describes how she attempts to find herself again by hiking 1100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. Please email Marge Wisniewski (margewise@gmail. com) or call (948-3930) if you will be attending these meetings.

New Stop Signs and Speed Limit Signs

The HOA will be installing 2 more stop signs at the west intersection of Latitude Drive and VillageWalk Circle, making that intersection a 3 way-All Way stop. Speed limit signs are to be added throughout the community to remind drivers the speed limit in VillageWalk is 25 mph. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office will be patrolling this intersection and the rest of the community and will issue citations to those drivers who do not stop at the stop signs or who exceed the posted speed limit.

Fitness Center Knowledge

The abductor and adductor fitness equipment is not designed to be used when standing. The proper use of this fitness equipment is in the seated position as it is designed. The Life Fitness bikes in the fitness center are not designed to be used while standing on the bikes. Some fitness bikes are designed for that type of use but those in our fitness center are not. Standing on the bikes in this way has caused damage to both the bikes, which the HOA has repaired. Please know the treadmills are not designed to be used without turning on the motor or to be forced in a backwards motion. Using the treadmills without the power on will damage the motor, and forcing the treads in the opposite direction of their installation causes damage to the belts and motor. Improper use of fitness center equipment becomes a safety and liability issue for the Homeowners Association along with extra costs to the homeowners to repair this equipment. Please use the fitness center equipment as it was designed to be used by the manufacturer. Anyone caught misusing the equipment per manufacturer’s instructions of proper use may be banned from the fitness center and assessed the cost of repairs to the machines. june/july 2013

Have a landscaping issue or concern?

Simply call the Town Center at 9499909 and speak with Tammy. Tammy will add your name, address and landscaping concerns to be inspected at the next Landscape Review. Please include the location where plants or trees are either dead or looking stressed. Typically Reviews are done every Friday, with the Manager, Landscape Manager and Irrigation Supervisor visiting your home to look for cause and resolution. Please contact the HOA if you have plants that have died or look to be doing poorly.

Saturday and Sunday Guard Services

The Homeowners Association added guard service on Saturdays and Sundays between 12 noon and 6 p.m. The guard is to patrol the Town Center and the Pool areas during that time. If a resident or homeowner believes there is a problem at a pool with either unsafe or discourteous behavior, or suspects there are visitors at the pool who are not residents or homeowners, or simply sees something that does not look right, please find the guard on duty and report the issue. The guards have access to owner and resident information and have the authority to handle the problem.

Architectural Change Approval Needed

No matter what you are placing outside, if it is in view of the neighbors, from the streets or walkways, it needs to be approved before you may place it outside. Plants may not be removed or installed without prior approval either. All physical changes to the exterior of the home must receive approval prior to any changes being made. Fences are not permitted.

Hurricane Season Begins June 1 through November 30.

We all hope this year will be a quiet year for hurricanes. Shutters may be installed June 1 through November 30th if the home will be unoccupied for the Hurricane Season. Reminder: all shutters must come down or reopen December 1, no exceptions. Remember to secure all items (potted plants, exterior umbrellas, lanai furniture and exterior art décor) on the exterior during a hurricane or while you are away. Any small, loose items can become missiles during these storms, causing a lot of damage to property, screened cages and unprotected windows. Check you pool enclosures and lanai cages for rusty or brown or missing bolts and replace any found with new bolts: this keeps them strongest in high winds.

Just a reminder: Must have’s in your ready-to-go emergency kit:

• 1 gallon of drinking water per day per person • Non-perishable ready-to-eat- food (canned foods/ milk, peanut butter, energy or granola bars, instant coffee and other drinks, etc.) and manual can opener • Two week supply of medications (w/ list of dosage, amount, doctors to contact for emergency medical treatment) • Analog phone (no battery or electricity needed) • First aid kit, bug spray, sunscreen and extra batteries, baby or sanitary wipes • Battery operated radio (extra batteries) and NOAA or other radio • Flashlight (extra batteries) • Cash/credit cards and important documents (DL, Social Security card, insurance policies, medical cards, etc) in sealed plastic bags to keep dry • Extra bleach for disinfecting water • Work or gardening gloves, sturdy shoes, hat. • Check on line for Lee County’s Hurricane Preparation Plan for more information.

REMINDER: HOA FEES ARE DUE JULY 1st. Happy Fourth of July to All Residents! Stay safe everyone, and enjoy the fireworks!

Barbara B Mann

War Horse

Thursday, March 13, 2014 • 7:30 p.m. A heart-warming tale of loyalty and friendship, and winner of FIVE 2011 Tony Awards®, WAR HORSE tells the story of young Albert and his beloved horse Joey. When Joey is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France, he is soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness that is currently playing to packed houses in London and around the world. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company that bring to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride. We are looking to contract tickets with Barbara B Mann for this show. They are very strict with their payment policy and VillageWalk does not want to get stuck with extra tickets. If you are interested in this show please call the HOA Office today at 949-9909. If we have 20 people interested in tickets we will go ahead with our group contract.
