The ABCs of Real Estate Designations Every day I try to learn something new. Sometimes it’s about improving myself (health, parenting), improving my business, or being a better leader for my company. Sometimes it’s 2 a.m. and I’m learning about penguins, thanks to the BBC and David Attenborough. If you haven’t watched “Blue Planet,” may I suggest that the next time you have insomnia you tune into the BBC and give Sir Attenborough a listen? You might learn something as you drift off to his soothing lilt. Speaking of learning new things … when it comes to buying and selling real estate, what do the letters mean that are after a Realtor’s name and why should you care? You’ve seen them: ABR, GRI, CRS, e-PRO, etc. They actually mean a lot and not just to the Realtor who earned them; they should mean a lot to consumers as well. Why? Because those letters mean that agent is dedicated, not only to continuing their education, but to truly honing their skills. These courses represent a commitment, and many of them have production requirements that are tied to the classwork. For example, Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) requires a base of classes, significant sales

production, an annual fee, and annual ongoing education courses. This is a big commitment! GRI or Graduate, Realtor Institute, is one of my favorites. This is a three-week commitment with a focus on what it truly takes to be a great Realtor, above and beyond the licensing requirements. E-Pro is all about using technology in real estate and was a real bottom burner for me (yes, I had to sit still for what seemed like forever). I finished it and lived to tell the tale … and I’m a better agent for it. When we last spoke, March had ended, and we were just moving into the total lockdown phase in the area. Two months later, we are carefully venturing out of lockdown following all the new rules and recommendations. As we move closer to full capacity at events and gatherings (legal qualifier: at least as of this writing), it feels a bit like the opening might have passed and we missed it. Or maybe the “Big Bang Celebration” will be more of a slow rise to “happy,” as we start to slowly engage and venture into places we haven’t been in a while. Either way, we will be here for it and hope to bring you the stories and businesses still working to make this a great place to work and live. In case you were lost in Facebook feeds and Netflix movies for the last two months, we are happy to report Collin College will be open for students in August! It is a game-changing addition to Wylie, and we continue to preview the opportunities for students of all ages. So, there was a virus going around recently … heard this one? Did you hear about some superstar Southeast Collin Corridor residents who didn’t just ask, “How can I help?” but started their own thing to help their neighbors in need? Sachse resident Mark Kmieciak and Wylie resident Lon Ricker fit that bill perfectly. Mark went to work sewing masks for our local hospital and citizens,

and Lon started Team Up to Fight Hunger, a win-win food relief program, that is partnering local restaurants with the local food pantries to provide meals to families and bring business to restaurants. Wylie Chamber President The City of Murphy with the Murphy Chamber of Commerce launched Murphy Unites shortly after the pandemic hit, to serve as an information/help point for Murphy businesses and residents. These are just a few of the many examples we have seen where neighbor helps neighbor through a chaotic, confusing, and frightening time. We are so happy to be here to highlight them for their efforts and the example they set for all of us. Please take a moment to review the advertisers and businesses listed in this publication. The Legacy Begins: Students Anticipate Wylie Campus Opening

atie Henry’s future is not an open book. This Wylie East High School student has already earmarked pages of what is yet to come. She has plans to graduate with an associate degree from Collin College — a year earlier than her peers — and serve as a trauma surgeon in the the Air Force. “We are free in America, and people are giving up their lives for us,” Henry said. “I want to be one of those people who protects others. I have a sense of duty. I feel like I need to do this,” she said. Henry has known since the second grade, when she moved to Wylie, that she wanted to serve in the military. She joined ROTC her freshman year of high school, and she has 32 college credit hours under her belt. “I already have half of my associate degree,” Henry

said. “I will be a college sophomore when I start taking classes at the Collin College Wylie Campus this fall. I decided to take dual credit classes because they count for high school and college. I saved money, and it takes many years to become a trauma surgeon.”

A future day in the life Excited for the Fall 2020 semester, Henry can envision what she will do at the new Wylie Campus. “Before the fall semester begins, I will visit the bookstore, meet with an advisor, and speak to people in the financial aid office,” she said. “I like small classes because you are able to ask more questions, and I want to learn about the Honors Institute and honors classes. I also want to find out more about service-learning classes

because you can volunteer as part of the class, and I enjoy helping out in the community.” Henry can buy the books she needs at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in the Campus Commons. This is the same building which houses the career center, where she will explore internships, and the fitness center, where she plans to start her day with planks, push-ups, and sit-ups while she listens to Tim McGraw. Though she has already received online assistance with her college papers, Henry is looking forward to meeting with writing and math tutors at the Anthony Peterson Center for Academic Assistance housed in the library. “I will double-check my homework in the library before I head to class,” Henry said. “The study rooms will allow me to close the door and focus. I like to hold books in my hands, and I also like audiobooks. I used both at the same time in my American Literature class. I will also check out novels to read at home.” Henry is contemplating taking biology, psychology, algebra, speech, and music, or art classes in her first semester at the Wylie Campus. The idea of painting on the second-story terrace is right up her alley. “I like to paint patriotic things,” Henry said. “I have a board in my room with a painting of all the branches in the military and a cool sky picture from when I volunteered for the Wylie Art Gallery.”

That is my favorite food ever. I also want to lift weights at the fitness center on my days off. I will definitely get assistance at the math and writing labs if I need it. The art history classroom with multiple-image projections sounds cool. I also want to find out more about learning communities classes because you get to learn about two disciplines at the same time. The library study rooms will be great because it is not usually quiet at home. I have little brothers,” he said, laughing. From dual credit classes to firefighter and paramedic training to an associate degree and classes that will transfer to a university, Collin College is helping Harris to achieve his dream to serve the community as a first responder. “When I am on my deathbed I can look back and know I made a difference in this world, I helped others, and I can be satisfied." College within walking distance Wylie High School senior and fellow Collin College dual credit student, Hudson Harris, may take an art class at the Wylie Campus, but he plans to train to become a firefighter and a paramedic first. “There is no better feeling than to be on the fire truck, with the lights and siren going, on the way to help somebody,” Harris said. “Ever since I was a little kid, I thought firefighting was the coolest thing ever. When we lived in Florida every one of my birthday parties was at the fire station, but I was 16 years old when I made the decision to become a firefighter. I was in the Wylie Fire Rescue Explorer program. We had the opportunity to do ride outs, and that’s when I made my decision.” In the fall, Harris will be taking classes at the college’s Public Safety Training Center, but before he starts, he will visit the Wylie Campus for advising. He plans to take math, government, fine arts, and other classes at the Wylie Campus to complete his associate degree and ultimately transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree in emergency management. “If I walk outside of my house and turn right, in four minutes I can see the Wylie Campus,” Harris said. “I pass it on the way to high school, and it has been cool to see it change from the time they broke ground to now.” Once the campus is open, Harris plans to leave his car in the driveway, grab his backpack, and listen to music while he enjoys nature as he travels on foot via the walkA Wylie Chamber of Commerce Publication

NETWORKING FOR GOOD Lon Ricker says volunteering is the best way to build business

etworking is a lifestyle for Lon Ricker. Not the onthe-web or take-my-business-card styles of networking, but the making-connections-to-createopportunities-and-lasting-friendships kind. “For years, I’ve been sharing with friends – and anyone that would listen – that the time to network is not when you need a job, a girlfriend or someone to fix your car,” said Lon, owner of Ricker Dynamics, a “fund development” consulting business. “You should be networking all the time.” More than going to lunches and group gatherings trying to build your business, Lon’s brand of networking includes doing something for the greater good. “Spend at least 10% of your networking time volunteering at some place that sparks your passion,” he advises. “The connections you make will be with people that have similar passions, which will open doors and friendships well into the future.” During the recent COVID-19 self-quarantine time, social media and the news were full of stories of people helping each other through the time of isolation. “If this pandemic caused you to start caring about your neighbors, please continue doing it, even when you don’t have to,” Lon advocates.

One such initiative that Lon has been spearheading is Team Up to Fight Hunger. In an effort to supplement their often-empty shelves, local food pantries are providing vouchers to clients that are redeemable at local area restaurants for a hot, hearty meal for their family. Via fundraising efforts, Team Up reimburses the restaurants for a portion of the meals as a way of not only giving food and love to families in need, but also to supplement the restaurant’s business. “It’s been a real blessing to see the collaboration of nonprofits and restaurants, not to mention the financial support from the community.” Most people would agree that Lon is a success story. Born and raised in Michigan, he attended a one-room schoolhouse until sixth grade. (“Just like ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ ” he explains.) After high school the self-described nerd earned degrees in electronic and computer engineering technology from Lake Superior State University in Sault St. Marie, Michigan. His first job out of school was with Bell Laboratories, and he spent 20 years in the telecom industry “primarily working for start-up companies,” he said. But success doesn’t always mean passion. “I dropped out of the corporate world – three times – and traveled,” Lon recalls.

for donations and taking care of the people who give. “Raising money is a necessary evil that they often don’t like,” Lon said. “Often they don’t even know how to do it. I have to gain their trust so they will let me help them engage and cultivate their donors.” Communicating with donors is important all the time – not just when donations are needed, Lon advises. He urges nonprofits to tell their donors about the impact their donations have. “Tell them the successes – and struggles – you are having. Treat them like friends and keep them informed of what is going on,” he said. “I tell people they should communicate and thank their donors

After the third time, and while traveling in his RV, when he’d come back to Texas, he started volunteering at a mobile soup kitchen in Dallas. “Then God led me to run a big event where we put 500 homeless men and women up at the Dallas Hyatt Regency Hotel, and then later the Omni Dallas Hotel for Christmas,” Lon reminisces. “I ended up running the event for five years and became the director of development.” During his time with the nonprofit, the group’s annual revenue grew from $300,000 to $1.3 million. “We went from feeding the homeless to feeding and sheltering the homeless with nine group/transitional homes. We also started a thrift store to generate revenue. I like ‘friendraising,’ so asking for money is easy,” he said. Now with Ricker Dynamics, Lon uses what he’s learned to help other nonprofits and businesses. “I’m only doing this article if it can help others,” Lon said. “Perhaps someone learns that it’s OK to chase their passion, or that you can really be happy being broke. I’m happiest when I’m serving others. Like, helping nonprofit leaders raise money so they can serve more clients; that makes me happy. “It’s like taking ‘do unto others’ to another extreme.” Lon often starts off meetings and conversations by asking the groups he’s working with what he can do to help them. “Even if it’s just helping put up flags in Old City Park before Memorial Day, I get so blessed by the opportunity and the people I get to work with,” he said. Locally Ricker Dynamics works with Wylie ER, a freestanding emergency room, handling marketing and community engagement. Some of the local nonprofits he has or currently works with include In-Sync Exotics, 5 Loaves Food Pantry, The Coventry Reserve, Wylie Acting Group and the Murphy Veterans Tribute Project. “One of my main nonprofit clients right now is In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center here in Wylie. They rescue exotic big cats and take care of them for the rest of their lives. An example of how I get blessed is that I’ve gone on a couple of rescues where we have transported cats from failing facilities. How many people get the opportunity to transport five tigers across country!?” Lon has also brainstormed fundraising ideas with the Murphy Veterans Tribute Project. “I spend quite a bit of time working pro bono for smaller agencies that can’t really afford to hire a consultant,” Lon said. “If I can help them build their donor base, then I’m blessed by that.” The message Lon gives nonprofit leaders is to “love on their donors just like they love on their clients.” Some are really good at taking care of the people (or animals) who use their services but not great at asking

at least four times between their last gift and the next time you ask.” He also admits that he’s not afraid to come up “with crazy ideas” to help nonprofits stand out. He said it takes creative – “crazy and often wild” – ideas to stand out from other nonprofits or businesses. “If I scare them, then perhaps we aren’t a good match to work together.” Some of his ideas might include charging volunteers to volunteer (it works, if done right, he says) making silly (some might say fun, others “unconventional”) videos, hosting galas in locations where no one has ever had a gala before. “People will buy tickets, just to see how you pull it off,” Lon says. “It’s good to get people talking about you, so when you have a need, they already know who you are.” Many nonprofit leaders are uncomfortable asking for money, but Lon works with a group that teaches fundraising from a biblical perspective. “Not only is it OK to ask for money, but the Bible instructs us to be cheerful givers. If I don’t tell you about an opportunity to help someone, then I’m doing you a disservice,” Lon said. “It’s kind of like this article – I didn’t want to do it, because I didn’t want to talk about myself, but if maybe someone reads it and thinks ‘I can go help others,’ well then maybe it was worth it.” After all, “The best way to be blessed is to be a blessing.” • www.wyliechamber.org • 11

It is hard to find words to fully express the gratitude we feel for the support we have received from our costumers and the Wylie community and how very proud we are of our dedicated staff. The COVID-19 virus has affected all restaurants and bars, putting our very livelihoods in jeopardy. Napoli’s is a family-owned restaurant that has been doing business for over 20 years. We would normally employ 25 or more people. As you know, after the governor’s request that dine-in restaurants be closed, we also had to make a decision, one that would affect our staff emotionally and financially, but was necessary to keep people safe. While we had to temporarily shut our doors, nothing in the world could stop us from serving the people in the community we care about so much! We have missed our customers and are excited to now be open for dining in. Seating is limited so call ahead to check availability. The Wylie Chamber started in 1977, and for over 40 years our mission has been to connect business to the community and grow together. We do this through publications like the Connection magazine and this Annual Business Resource Guide. The Chamber has produced a great two-night event, the Wylie Championship Rodeo, in September for the last 25 years. Held in the F. Ovid Birmingham Ag Arena, the rodeo brings in over 2,000 people each night from Wylie and beyond to watch the rodeo action and play in the Kiddie Corral. Our members are right there with us, as volunteers and sponsors, working together to create a family-friendly community event. In addition to publications and events, the Chamber hosts weekly and monthly programs for the membership designed to educate and connect them to other businesses and organizations in Wylie. of the pandemic, the Murphy Chamber board of directors began meeting to develop a plan for the chamber to act upon. The idea of #murphyunites emerged and has been running successfully on the chamber Facebook page. The goal is to create a movement that will boost local businesses while meeting the needs of our residents. To further the efforts to “Shop Local”, the City of Murphy launched a new website on May 15th as a collaborative effort with the Chamber of Commerce to expand upon the #murphyunities movement. The Murphy Chamber also launched a “Livin’ That Quarantine Life” t-shirt contest in April to engage our community in a creative way to “rally” around this difficult time which will leave an imprint

Raiders Only Principal Retires

“I

t’s a great day to be alive and a great day to be a Raider!” Anyone who has heard Mike Williams on the morning announcements at Wylie East High School knows that he truly believes both these sentiments are true. Williams opened the school in 2007 and has led the campus through the ups and downs with a steady hand and calming demeanor. Now, after a 38-year career in education, the original “RFL” (Raider for Life) will step away from the classrooms, gyms, band halls and sidelines he has called home. “I know the time is right for me to make this decision on the next chapter of my life,” said Mr. Williams. “I have thought and prayed about it, and while this school year is not ending the way any of us could have imagined, I truly believe this is what is best for me, my family and the Raider Nation.” Mr. Williams came to Wylie in 1998 and held a variety of administrative positions at several campuses. In 2007, he was tapped to open and lead East. The school opened with just 900 students, all freshmen. Today there are 2000 students. “Mr. Williams has been a true gift to Wylie ISD and has created quite the legacy at WEHS through years of consistent leadership,” said Matt Atkins, president of Wylie ISD Board of Trustees and proud East dad. “In a short time, he created rich traditions that make students proud to be a Raider for Life. His passion and genuine care for the students showed every day at that campus through his actions and communication.“ The campus has grown steadily, both in students and in their successes. Raiders have earned state and national honors in every field of competition, including in the classroom. “Mr. Williams brought so much to Wylie East,” said Jaxon Hill, a 2019 WEHS graduate. “He was extremely A Wylie Chamber of Commerce Publication

personable and made his best effort to come to as many student events as possible, always with a smile on his face, ready to support us.” “I am most proud of East’s academic successes, earning a 93 (“A” rating) and seven out of seven distinctions from the Texas Education Agency,” noted Williams. “We are the only campus in Wylie ISD in 2018-2019 to earn all possible distinctions.” Williams also cited the Pride of the East’s recent top 10 rating in the UIL state marching contest as one of the highlights he will most remember. Other notable highlights of William’s tenure include: numerous students earning National Merit Honors; multiple students earning All-State ranking in band and choir; the 2015 Lady Raider Soccer Team UIL State Championship; Raider baseball’s run last year to the Regional Semi-Finals; the solar car team placing second in the national crosscountry race; football’s five playoff appearances in the first seven years of varsity competition; girls’ basketball’s four consecutive district championships; and numerous students earning college athletic scholarships. "Mike's passion is for kids to learn in a positive atmosphere and that atmosphere is at East," said WISD School Board trustee and Wylie East parent, Mitch Herzog. "Mike wears East as a sense of pride and this was exemplified in everything he did." Williams will be missed next fall, but his legacy of “RFL” will live on in the students he has influenced. “It makes me very happy to see so many of my former students come back to Wylie ISD and serve as teachers to the next generation of Raiders and Pirates,” said Williams. His final act as principal was to preside over the graduation of the Class of 2020. His fondness for Disney is well known, and he said he plans to spent lots of time at The Happiest Place on Earth. • www.wyliechamber.org • 17

Shining Bright: Facing the Future Together

avigating the waters of the ever-changing pandemic has been challenging for the entire world. While collectively we struggle to find our sea legs from one wave of change to the next, in Collin County we have activated a beacon of light – an extensive, resilient partnership between residents, business and industry, educational institutions, and community leaders. Together, we addressed issues utilizing a wireless network and are leaving a wake of innovative solutions. According to Dr. Neil Matkin, Collin College District president, the college was in a good position prior to the pandemic because it has continually invested in technology and offers an e-learning center to assist professors with moving classes online. This foundation served the college well as it transitioned all of its spring class offerings to a virtual format. “We plan to open a new virtual campus in the near future and moving our classes and services to an online format provided us with an unexpected opportunity to be better prepared for doing so,” Matkin said. “From the beginning, our Board of Trustees and leadership, professors, staff, industry, and business partners stepped up and worked together. This extraordinary team navigated each new challenge with amazing tenacity, creativity, and enthusiasm. One visible example of this diligence is our new Wylie Campus. Our construction crew and college team kept moving forward to make sure this campus would be ready for students this fall.” From sharing respiratory supplies with area hospitals to accelerating energy-saving upgrades on campuses while students learned from home, the college continued to look for opportunities to make positive changes as the

pandemic unfolded. When it became evident that internet access was an issue, the college partnered with area school districts to offer hot spots for their IT departments and created new “Wi-Fi Drive-Ins” (external hotspots) for students without internet access. To ease the transition from high school to college, the college also held Collin College Bound virtual events for Wylie ISD graduating seniors. Approximately 120 individuals learned about registration, financial aid, and other student resources at Collin College. “One of the most wonderful aspects of Collin College is that it is nimble and can quickly adapt to changing situations, markets, and industry needs,” said Dr. Bob Collins, Collin College chair and founding board of trustees member. “That serves us well on a daily basis, but in a crisis situation that element enables us to continue to offer exceptional service to our students and our community.” Students are always the top priority at Collin College which is why the college recently celebrated future health care heroes with recognition parades for more than 140 nursing and allied health students. No one knows what the future holds, but one thing is certain. “We have an incredible team of partners in our community,” Matkin said. “At Collin College, we are committed to our students and to our communities. uring the coronavirus pandemic, the world changed, seemingly overnight. What hasn’t changed is our resilience as a society and the generosity of others who remind us there is still so much good in the world. In late March when the pandemic was just starting to ramp up, Sachse resident Mark Kmieciak looked at his wife and said “I’ve got to help.” Kmieciak hadn’t sewn anything since his childhood, some 50 years ago; but that didn’t stop him from going to Walmart where he bought the last sewing machine on the shelf. He stocked up on material and supplies. He did his research and found what he believed was a suitable mask pattern on the Centers for Disease Control website. He admits those first few masks were not his finest. “I kept those for myself,” he says. As he continued to sew, he asked for feedback on the designs from nurses and others. “They evolved. Right now I’ve got three patterns that I use,” he adds. Some masks have string ties, some have elastic ear loops. Much like everyone else making masks, Kmieciak encountered supply chain issues. “It’s been hard to get materials. My orders kept getting cancelled,” Kmieciak says. He even tried wholesalers, but without much luck. None of that slowed him down. Kmieciak sewed masks 12 hours a day, and he has the wounds to show for it: stiff fingers, blisters, and needle punctures. As it turns out, he is uniquely qualified to tackle this project. First and foremost, he has a servant’s heart and wants to contribute to his community, but he also has a background in manufacturing and as a mechanic. He even has FEMA training, which might explain his curiosity to test the effectiveness of his layered masks. Kmieciak used a sleep apnea aid known as a CPAP machine to see if he could blow out a flame through the mask. If the flame held up, he knew his pattern was a success.

We are grateful to the volunteers who have sewn thousands of cloth masks, to the crafters who used their 3D printers to make face shields, and to the first responders who filled the parking lot with a parade of support. We’d need many more pages to list all the generous food donations, goody bags, and notes of encouragement. It’s been a daily reminder that we are in this together. • Texas law prohibits hospitals from practicing medicine. Pullbacks, Corrections, Bear Markets What’s the difference? What do these terms mean for you?

he COVID-19 outbreak has put tremendous pressure on stock prices, prompting some investors to blindly and indiscriminately sell positions at a time when the entire market is trending lower. Worried investors believe "this time it's different." When the market drops, some investors lose perspective that downtrends – and uptrends – are part of the investing cycle. When stock prices break lower, it's a good time to review common terms that are used to describe the market's downward momentum. Pullbacks. A pullback represents the mildest form of a selloff in the markets. You might hear an investor or trader refer to a dip of 5% to 10% after a peak as a “pullback.” Corrections. The next degree in severity is a “correction.” If a market or markets retreats 10% to 20% after a peak, you’re in correction territory. At this point, you’re likely on guard for the next tier.

Bear Market. In a bear market, the decline is 20% or more since the last peak. All this is normal. Pullbacks, corrections, and bear markets are a part of the investing cycle.
