How accurately is the past portrayed in film and television?
This new exhibit compares adaptations of beloved books written by Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott with the books that inspired series like Anne with an E, Bridgerton, The Gilded Age, and Downton Abbey.
Called “the heart of American show business,” Vaudeville was one of the most popular types of live entertainment in America in the decades following the Civil War.
The typical vaudeville variety show, which evolved from earlier minstrel, burlesque, and medicine shows, was family-friendly. Its acts could include singers, dancers, comedians, jugglers, trained animals, or ventriloquists, all on the same bill. The performers traveled from city to town, doing shows in a “circuit” of affiliated theaters.
This new exhibit traces the evolution of mass entertainment and the development of “the flickers,” short, silent moving pictures that became a regular part of vaudeville shows at the end of the 19th century. Before long, the silent film genre would begin to command a separate audience of its own.
