DREAM BIG WITH US Planning for the Future of Wylie Parks and Recreation
In early summer 2020, the Wylie City Council adopted a Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Master Plan to provide direction for park expansion, park redevelopment, and new park development to serve the growing population of Wylie.
Wylie’s parks and recreation system has seen incredible growth and changes over the past ten years. Today, the Parks and Recreation Department cares for 648 acres of parks and natural areas and 18 miles of trail. In 2019 Wylie Parks and Recreation facilities, and programs served more than 2.5 million visitors including children, pre-teens, teens, adults, and seniors.
The Master Plan process began in May 2018. The goal of the plan was to identify and prepare for future implementation of the City’s parks and recreation needs for the next five-year to ten-year period. During that time, a planning team interacted with a diverse Steering Committee, as well as various City staff, community leaders, and citizen groups to gather key objectives for future direction. A needs assessment and citizen survey identified high-priority items including, hike/bike/walk trails connected throughout the city and along the lake, aquatics and spraygrounds, and expanded amenities at Lake Lavon. Respondents also indicated programs they and members of their households would be most interested in participating. Farmer’s market, festivals/ events, fitness classes/events, swim lessons, and arts and crafts were programs of most interest to the respondents.
The importance of providing quality services and meeting the needs of the community is fundamental to the City of Wylie’s mission. Recognizing how to enhance the citizen’s quality of life, positively impacting the overall community image, and connecting people to physical and cognitive activity help Wylie move forward. The key is to maintain a commitment for developing a vibrant, balanced park system that serves Wylie today and builds in expectations of the generations to come.
As part of the Master Plan process citizen input played a large role in establishing priorities for the park system and allowing City leaders to review the impact of funding for future parks and recreation projects. The adopted plan includes a complete cataloged inventory of the existing parks and recreational facilities within the City. The Parks and Recreation system is divided into three zones: East, Central, and West Zones. Within each of those zones, specific facilities are identified.
