“Dairy Free” Not so Much of a Choice for Me Last week, I got the opportunity to speak with members of the Gallatin County 4-H Club who have beef projects for their county fair. My speech focused on transparency and finding your place in agriculture, and as most public speakers, I opened the floor up for questions following my half hour lecture. One of the questions I received was from someone who had done their homework on me, as they asked to talk about the one time I went vegan. For those of you who are new to this column, two years ago, I went vegan for the season of Lent to see if the vegan diet really was all it’s cracked up to be, to learn

more about how the vegan diet affected my carbon footprint and to better understand the vegan community and hopefully relate to them a little more. I won’t get hung up about this experience, but if you want to learn more about the nitty-gritty of my experience, visit activistsvsagriculture.com. However, there is one thing the vegan diet taught me which I haven’t really discussed; I’m lactose

intolerant and it sucks. When I went vegan, I had to give up eating animal products, meaning dairy products were off limits. For six weeks, I yearned for string cheese; I longed for ice cream made with real milk; I loathed everyone who ate a slice of pizza in front of me. When my six weeks was up, naturally, I promptly ate a massive amount of cheese. In case you’ve never been on a diet before, I’ll let you in on a secret. When you give something up, then go whole-hog and eat it (the opposite of quitting something cold turkey), you get slightly sick – which is exactly what happened to me. But I thought, “No biggie, it’ll take my body some time to get readjusted to stomaching dairy again.” Then, “some time” came and went and my

body still wasn’t readjusted. After a year and a half of not eating dairy for a while then eating it because, c’mon, I didn’t want to give up cheese, I finally went to the doctor. After lots of tests and some different dietary restrictions, I became a card-carrying lactose intolerant. My friends and family tried to help me reason through this: Was I born this way? Did going vegan make me this way? It felt dramatic, like a bad high school, Lifetime movie centered around the fact I couldn’t indulge in cheese anymore. Nevertheless, all the crying and whining in the world can’t help me, so, I’ve decided to roll with the punches. I’ve learned to substitute some recipes with non-dairy (not as good, in my opinion) options

such as coconut milk or nutritional yeast. And yes, I do buy “fake” dairy products every now and then, but I make sure to only purchase them from companies I have researched and know for a fact don’t speak out against animal ag. I know, some of y’all may think I’m phony as an agvocate for using margarine instead of butter now, but c’mon, I can’t help it! One of the key takeaways I have from this whole ordeal is there’s dairy in so many of the food products on the market right now. No complaints there from the agvocate side – bring on more dairy and support the industry – but from a personal, will toss my cookies if I eat some good old, buttered pumpkin bread side, it’s not fun. The past few months, however, have made me be more creative in ways I can support the dairy

industry. I’m currently exploring the lactose-free side of the dairy industry. On my quest for the best lactose free products, I’ve also been exposed to many family-owned, farm-totable dairy producers as well. And the coconut milk Reddi-Wip on top of all of this is, my husband could drink a gallon of milk a day if he wanted, so I feel like he consumes enough dairy for the both of us. It’s not so fun being dairy free, but another silver lining is it has forced me to learn more about an industry I was not raised in like I was with beef. I’ve learned to appreciate the dairy industry a little more, have learned some interesting facts and met incredible people along the way. I don’t really know how to close this one out, so I guess I’ll end it with a dramatic but true statement. Enjoy your dairy filled lives, because there’re some of us out here who really wish they could from a moral, nutritional and tasteful standpoint.

WEED & PEST COUNCIL Native plants: What they are and why use them for a beautiful, healthy garden Even though snow is still lingering in places across the state, it’s time to start planning for a beautiful summer garden. Gardening is a great way to get exercise, have fun outside and build something beautiful producing fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs all summer long. There are certain plants you can plant to save time, money and help the environment. Wyoming native plants This is where native plants come in. The Wyoming Weed and Pest Council (WWPC) encourages everyone to incorporate native plants into their gardens. Native plants

build a healthy environment and support the entire food web by providing food for small birds, mammals, insects and many other wildlife. But what are native plants? They are flowers, shrubs, trees and plants growing naturally in a particular region, ecosystem or habitat without human introduction. These types of plants have taken thousands of years to develop beneficial relationships with other wildlife in the area. They are the best fit for hardy growers and the climate of Wyoming because they grow here naturally. A great example of

EXTENSION EDUCATION By Alex Orozco, UW Extension Educator

Cowherd profitability depends on herd health plans Profitability of cow/calf operations are dependent on a healthy herd and high conception rates. Therefore, as branding approaches, it is important for producers to create a herd health plan to promote a sustainable herd. Applying proper vaccinations using Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) guidelines and product label directions can improve the overall health of a herd. Additionally, as a producer, it’s important to have a veterinarian not only help with vaccine protocols but also with breeding soundness exams (BSE). A BSE

is a cost-effective program evaluating a bull’s ability to breed. Having bulls not able to breed can significantly reduce conception rates. Therefore, as producers move into breeding season it is important to ensure cows and bulls are not only in proper body condition to be bred, but bulls are tested to make sure they are able to breed. Herd health plan Branding season has arrived and is the time to manage calves by identification, castration, dehorning and blackleg shots.

these specialized pollinator-plant relationships is long-tube flowers and hummingbirds. Wyoming native plants like Rocky Mountain penstemon and scarlet gilia produce nectar, which feeds hummingbirds. While hummingbirds move from flower to flower to eat, they pollinate and help reproduce those flowers. But this is not the only pollinator-plant relationship. There are many other plants, animals and insects benefitting from each other. Native plant benefits There are several benefits of having more native plants in gardens. It provides many benefits to the environment, but also the gardener. Native plants are easy to care for and sometimes require less maintenance and water than other ornamental plants. Gardeners will save time and money and still end up with a beautiful, thriving garden. They will also find the joy of seeing increased wildlife buzzing around the yard. By incorporating native plants, gardeners are also An appropriate herd health plan (HHP) along with a protocol ensures sustainable beef cattle production. The HHP should include cattle nutrition, reproduction, vaccination schedules and marketing. Proper vaccination and cattle handling procedures are essential to promote overall health. A producer should work with their veterinarian to create a vaccination and overall health plan best suited for their management goals and resources. The veterinarian can help a beef operation best tailor health management to deal with local diseases, parasites and other regional health issues. The core vaccination program for calves (birth to three months of age) should include: four-way infectious bovine rhinotracheitis; bovine virus diarrhea; Prevnar13; bovine respiratory syncytial virus; twoway Pasteurella; and 4/7-way Clostridial. There are addi-

helping to increase native and diverse wildlife populations, such as honeybees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other local species of birds. Also, by simply planting native species, gardeners remove the chance they are planting something which could become invasive and hurt the local ecosystem. “One of the best ways to avoid invasive species in Wyoming is to grow native plants,” said University of Wyoming (UW) Assistant Professor and Invasive Plant Extension Specialist Kelsey Brock. “We know these plants thrive and sustain local flora and fauna, and they don’t harm or destroy the environment around them.” And here’s the good news – planting native plants doesn’t have to be difficult. Adding just a few native plants will make a big difference in the ecosystem. Gardeners will start to see more wildlife in the garden, too. And because these plants thrive locally, they can likely survive off the rain and sun Mother Nature provides.

tional considerations, such as fly control and deworming. To be successful, it is important to follow BQA guidelines, read product labels, talk to the local veterinarian and handle cattle with as little stress as possible. Breeding soundness exams As producers, one main management goal is to have high conception rates. However, in order to achieve high conception rates, not only do cows and bulls have to be in proper body condition, but bulls must be sound and fertile. Reproductive success requires bulls that can detect cows in estrus and successfully breed them. A proven and cost-efficient method to test the breeding potential of bulls is through a BSE. The production of sperm is a 61-day process; therefore, BSEs are recommended to be done through a veterinarian within 30 to 60 days of the start of a breeding season. This

Planting precautions It is good to be aware some native plants can be poisonous to livestock, such as lupine or larkspur. They grow great in gardens, but it’s best not to plant them in a spot livestock could reach. Luckily, Wyoming itself has many different native plants, because of the wide range of climates in the state. This means gardeners throughout Wyoming have a variety of plants to use in their garden. The only downside to native plants is a little bit of research is often recommended. County weed and pest recommends these native plants for beginners: black-eyed Susans; blanket flower; columbine; dotted blazing star; Lewis’ flax; Rocky Mountain penstemon; and upright prairie coneflower, otherwise known as Mexican hat. And these are just flowers! There are many resources to research different trees, shrubs or vines native to Wyoming. UW Extension provides a detailed list of flowers,

period allows producers to find replacement bulls if needed. BSEs are a relatively quick and economical procedure. This method is most effective in identifying bulls at the lower end of the fertility spectrum by placing bulls into categories of satisfactory, unsatisfactory or deferred. Any bull meeting all minimum standards for the physical exam, scrotal size and semen quality will be classed as a “satisfactory” potential breeder. During a BSE the vet evaluates bulls on the following: body condition via a physical exam; lameness; eyesight; internal structures of the reproductive system including the prostate, seminal vesicles, ampulla and inguinal rings; external structures of the reproductive system including the penis, prepuce, sheath, testicles, scrotum and epididymis; scrotal circumference is measured and adequacy is determined based on established standards

shrubs and groundcover native to Wyoming in their Plants with Altitude publication. Additionally, The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center offers an expansive directory of native plants for each state and also provides locations of where those plants can be purchased. So, now’s the time to start researching and planning for the ultimate native garden! This article is courtesy of the Wyoming Weed and Pest Council (WWPC). WWPC comprises of 23 Weed and Pest Districts in the state of Wyoming. The council works closely with the Wyoming Department of Agriculture and the University of Wyoming to keep current with the latest technology and research available in the ongoing management of noxious weeds and pests. The overall mission is to provide unified support and leadership for integrated management of noxious weeds and pests to protect economic and ecological resources in the state.

by age to evaluate the daily production of high-quality sperm; and semen to determine sperm motility and the percent of morphologically normal sperm. During the breeding season, it is important to observe bulls and evaluate their soundness. If a dominant bull gets lame, it is important to remove him from the herd because sound feet and legs are very important. If they are unsound, this can result in the inability to travel and mount for mating. When buying or leasing a bull it is important to consider expected progeny differences traits fitting into a producer’s management goals and cows. Additionally, it is important to test these bulls for sexual transmitted diseases such as trichomoniasis. Alex Orozco is a University of Wyoming Extension educator in Crook County. It’s the Pitts by Lee Pitts

Garden of Eatin’ I grew up in the garden, so I’m the perfect authority to help you grow your own “survival food” experts tell us we’re going to need because of the upcoming “Putin food shortage.” Unless you’re planning an indoor garden, the first thing you’re going to need is something to till your soil. My go-to piece of equipment has always been the rototiller. As a kid I spent hundreds of hours behind our Craftsman rototiller. Based on a quick look on the internet, Craftsman

rototillers at Lowe’s start at $229 all the way up to $899, but they look like toys compared to the rototillers I used. They have the “made in China” look to them too, so you might want to explore other options. Just a quick piece of advice: I got in hot water whenever I tilled on windy days when my mom put the newly washed clothes on the clothesline. The “clean clothes” came out a little gritty and the sheets were coffee-colored. So, it’s important to coordinate

From the Kitchen Table By Lynn Harlan Drones: Toy or Tool? It started with a text. A fellow sheepman sent Bob a video of him gathering some ewes with his drone. Bob had drawn our daughter Kate in the Christmas present drawing, and he thought a drone would be a good gift. He asked the fellow sheepman to order the drone he would want. It came in a light, small box. We were all afraid to get it out for weeks. A lot of dollars for this? Kate was finally able to have time to get acquainted with this small, plastic “Star Wars” toy. She started out slowly, taking pictures of the place. The drone could go high and far. The battery only lasts about 30 minutes in the cold, and can’t be flown in winds above 15 to 18 miles per hour. Checking cows on the

feedground, the drone makes a whine sound, sending my horses running off for high ground. Kate would gather a small bunch of ewes successfully, but she had trouble making the bucks move out. They just stared into the strange beast. We had to gather for shearing, which we did Easter weekend after the earlier snow. Kate was up on a rim, with Bob and I mounted on our four-wheelers far below. There were a bunch of ewes up in the nasty draws coming off the rim. I’d been up there plenty of times horseback, but it was really no place for a four-wheeler. Kate said she would try to bring them off with her drone. We couldn’t see the action, but soon came the bunch flying off the snow-

schedules with the washerwoman or washerman. For any youngsters less than 40, a clothesline is several strands of rope or wire strung between two posts we hung our clothes on to dry. I’m told clotheslines still exist in more primitive societies. If you’re planning a huge garden you’ll want something more substantial than a rototiller. Looking through farm papers I see where you can buy a red, blue, yellow or green tractor for between $500 and $500,000. Personally, I like the look of the used Big Bud tractor I saw for $300,000, which was built in 1982 in Havre, Mont. It has 760 horsepower produced by 16 pistons and has tires bigger than our first home. The only drawback I can see is it has a 1,000-gallon fuel tank which would currently cost

over $6,000 to fill up based on the price of diesel in my part of the world. After you have tilled your soil, you’re going to want to lay out your garden, which will consist of several semi-straight rows and mounds. You’ll have a tendency to want to plant a big garden but just keep in mind this snippet of sage advice: NEVER plant more than your spouse can weed. Your next decision will be if you want to plant seeds or transplants. Seeds are much cheaper, which might be a big consideration if you blow all your dough on the Big Bud. You’ll want to plant your green beans, corn, cabbage, carrots, beets and lettuce in rows. The vegetables you’ll grow the best will be the ones you don’t like to eat, like lima beans, but it’s still obligatory every gar-

covered thick sagebrush draws. We fell in behind them and it was a successful gather. Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, have been used by the military for many years. The general public began to take notice of the drone when Amazon announced in 2013 it would begin using drones for delivery. Since then, drone usage has evolved into hundreds of applications. Serious ones include search and rescue, where drones outfitted with thermal cameras can find lost people, and firefighters use them to find hot spots in a fire zone. Drones are an affordable “eye in the sky” and can show a situation quickly with less man power. They are used for inspections in confined spaces. The top 10 uses in agriculture include livestock monitoring and farm security, crop issues, looking at field conditions, pesticide spraying and seeding. Some larger drones are even used in crop hybridization, where the wind caused by the drone cross pollinates the crop. Some fun uses can be

seen during the Super Bowl halftime shows or in the openings of the Olympic games. Hundreds of lighted drones are programmed to light up into words, logos and pictures in the sky with different colored lights. On the news recently, I heard about a new “kamikaze drone.” It’s less than six months old, and it is being sent to Ukraine to help in their fight against the Russian invasion. It is a “one and done” drone target-

den must have beets, Brussels sprouts, radishes and carrots. These will all end up being eaten by your livestock. There used to be a contest for the gardener who could grow the most disgusting carrot looking most like, well, you know, but I don’t think they have the contest anymore because it’s sexist and not “woke.” Whatever that means. For any urbanites new to gardening, you should know there are no such things as bacon, steak or french fry seeds. Although french fries do come from potatoes, I’ve never been able to successfully grow them, although I could grow fabulous yams, the most disgusting thing I’ve ever put in my mouth, other than the snail my brother dared me to eat. If you insist on growing your own french fries ing the long convoys of Russian tanks. It is hard to hear, almost impossible to see and can be sent by an operator on the ground to explode at the target. I hope it helps. There are issues with flying drones, such as invading privacy, trespassing, Federal Aviation Regulations and so forth, but for us, using the drone in our pastures to monitor our livestock, check water tanks and many other uses, we’ll stay legal. I was doing some

it will probably necessitate you relocating to Idaho. This is also true of growing hot peppers, which my wife has the hots for, but I have found they don’t achieve their full degree of hotness anywhere but Hatch, N.M. – the capital of HOT. On the mounds you should plant your pumpkins and an assortment of squash. This will present your hardest challenge yet in growing a garden: getting rid of the squash. Be on the lookout for any vehicle not locked as a potential zucchini recipient. If you follow my advice, you may have enough survival food but by the time you pay for the Big Bud tractor, fertilizer, water and labor, you’ll have invested $5,000 per ear of wormy corn, overripe zucchini, perverted carrot and squishy tomato. research about drones in agriculture on YouTube and came across several shepherds in New Zealand using them. There are steep, grassy hills, especially on the South Island, which suit a drone gather. One Kiwi, who was afraid the sheep were becoming used to the “drone of the drone,” installed audio of dogs barking on his drone and it got the job done. Perhaps there may be a drone in your future!

Property for Sale PREMIER PROPERTY FOR SALE!! Beautiful home, large shop, 60 acres just north of Scottsbluff, NE. PRICE REDUCED! Must see!! Details at www. farmauction.net or call 308262-1150 ...................... 5/21 THE BEAVER CREEK RANCH is situated 8 miles south of Baker City in northeast Oregon. The ranch contains 9,300 deeded acres and is balanced with over 260 acres of irrigated hay and pasture featuring good full season water and approximately 1.5 miles of the Powder River running through the ranch. The ranch runs south with native range pasture into a small amount of scattered timber on the upper end of the ranch. The owner has spent considerable effort establishing good stock water in the various pastures. Interior cross fencing and perimeter fencing is in great condition. Improvements include a nice home, barns, outbuildings, good corrals and livestock handling facilities; all of which are in great shape. All of the property is contiguous with the exception of a 2,000 acre pasture that is nearby, offering good spring, summer or fall grazing; you can drive the cattle to and from the main ranch. If you are looking for a ranch that offers good production with ease of management, this is it. Whether it is a cow/ calf, yearling or a combination, the ranch offers that kind of flexibility. It has hunting and fishing, all of which could be further developed should one desire. This is the first time offering of this ranch and it is priced to sell. At a time when nearly all properties are obscenely over priced, this one is not. $6,750,000. Please

Alizardo Lee "Sonny" Martinez Dec. 4, 1943 – May 7, 2022

Alizardo Lee “Sonny” was born in Cimarron, New Mexico to Leandro Lee and Easter Duran Martinez. The family, consisting of brother Frank, sisters Maryann, Jeanne, Priscilla and Betty, moved from New Mexico to Wyoming in 1955. Sonny went to school in Hot Springs County, Thermopolis, focusing on ranching and rodeoing, earning a degree in COWBOYING.

On Jan 1, 1964, he married his soulmate Carole Christine Schaff, where they raised two sons Reid and Griff. Through his years he managed many ranches all the while building his own herd of cattle. Lee rodeoed in events across Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota and Nebraska regions, winning multiple rodeo titles in bareback, bull riding and team roping events. He won his first belt buckle at the age of 14 in bareback riding in Meeteetse. Lee never knew a stranger and always was the first to welcome someone into his family, which was his passion, along with horses and cows. He loved them with full heart and passion every day.

Water regulations lifted for Tongue River Basin Wyoming State Engineer Brandon Gebhart announced May 9, priority water administration in the Tongue River Basin under the Yellowstone River Compact has been lifted. Gebhart made the announcement after receiving a letter from the state of Montana indicating the call was being lifted due to the improved hydrologic conditions within the basin. With Tongue River Reservoir in Montana likely to fill, administration activity is no longer required in Wyoming. Montana placed the initial call on April 1, when snowpack conditions in the Tongue River were below average, and forecasts predicted below average spring runoff exacerbated by poor soil moisture conditions. However, since April 1, major improvements have occurred, including increased snowpack of about 40 percent combined with improved soil moisture conditions and increased water storage in the Tongue River Reservoir. The priority administration largely applied to storage accruals of post-1950 storage rights in Wyoming reservoirs. Any water stored in those reservoirs is now available for its permitted use, and is no longer subject to a later release to sat-

Dear Editor, On behalf of the leadership and staff of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association (WSGA), I want to express our sincere appreciation for the incredibly outstanding special edition of the Roundup that was released in recognition of our 150th anniversary. It is apparent long arduous hours were spent on gathering these historic materials and photos, interviewing numerous individuals and preparing advertising. Our staff enjoyed the opportunity to work with you in this effort. WSGA further expresses our gratitude to the many advertisers who demonstrated their commitment to our industry and to

their relationship with our association. Clearly, this special edition would not have been possible without their participation. This edition of the Roundup will become a part of our permanent archives at the American Heritage Center. Undoubtedly, many Roundup readers will cherish their copies. I want to take this opportunity to encourage Roundup readers to join us for our 150th Anniversary Wyoming Cattle Industry Convention in Cheyenne June 8-11. Best Regards, Jim Magagna Executive Vice President Cheyenne

isfy a shortage in the Tongue River Reservoir. Many other water users in the basin were impacted due to the inability to divert post-1950 water rights during the administration period. The Yellowstone River Compact Commission Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) members, consisting of Wyoming, Mon-

tana and U.S. Geological Survey employees, continue to explore options to improve forecasting methods within the Tongue River Basin. The TAC is dedicated to improving forecasting skill in order to better predict spring runoff and the need for interstate administration in any given year. While the call to fill the

Tongue River Reservoir has lifted, any priority administration for senior Wyoming water rights is still in effect and many of the area rivers are likely to see normal stream regulation after the runoff period due to calls from senior appropriators. Montana still reserves the right to place a call in the future, if conditions warrant.
