Bale Wrap, Net Wrap and Twine Bale Wrap

Wynnstay work with the leading manufacturers of silage bale wrap to ensure we supply quality products that are tried and tested. Our bale wraps give a consistent, high quality performance time after time. Not all bale wraps are the same. When considering which one to choose, there are several key points to consider. Does your bale wrap offer…

• High puncture & tear resistance • Greater resistance to oxygen and water ingress – means better crop fermentation • Consistently good elasticity • Optimum adhesion level - seals the bale effectively to help generate ideal anaerobic conditions. • UV protection in all climates – means that bales can withstand extremes of temperature to keep bales safe and secure during storage.

Net Wrap Piippo Edge Master 3,600m

• Improved coverage by up to 10%

• Edge Master leaves no bare shoulders: the bales look neat and contain no air. This ensures better preservation of the silage

ONLY

£142 HARVEST

per roll

• When bailing straw, the covered edges prevent wastage, ensuring that all the material stays within the bale • High breaking strength, less netwrap is needed per bale compared to the standard net wraps on the market.

Wynnstay supply a comprehensive range of harvest products included silage bale wrap, net wrap, twine, stack nets and bale patches.

Secure Covers® You know it’s the best here’s how Secure Covers reduce waste

In addition to preventing bird and animal damage to silage sheets, protective silage covers should also:1. Be flexible enough to follow the contours of the silage surface holding silage sheets in place to prevent aerobic spoilage 2. Prevent wind lifting the silage sheet There are two main types of material used to make protective silage covers, woven or knitted high density polyethylene (HDPE).

Bending length (mm)

Flexural rigidity (µjoules/m)

Secure Covers 300g/m2

69

2509

Woven material 300g/m2

119

7316

effectively that woven material. This will result in less surface waste.

Woven material is made of monofilaments which run straight, horizontally and vertically. However, in Secure Covers knitted material the monofilament follows a complex looped path (Fig 1).

A summary of the results show that:1. Secure Covers are more flexible (Bending Length and Flexural Rigidity) than woven covers. Which means Secure Covers follow the contours of the silage clamp better than woven covers 2. Secure Covers have a greater wind diffusing effect resulting in a greater resistance to ‘wind lift’, keeping the silage sheet in place even on windy days. This effect is due to a combination of:a) The 3-dimensional structure of knitted Secure Covers which is much more complex than a woven silage cover b) Secure Covers are rougher than woven covers (Mean Roughness Depth and Mean Peak Width) c) Secure Covers have a greater Void Volume

Fig 1 Surface Infinite Focus Microscpoe images of surface structure

Secure Covers are protected by patent application GB1704218.5

Because there is no single straight line of monofilament, Secure Covers material is inherently more flexible than woven material. The stiffness properties of fabrics, bending length and flexural rigidity, can be measured using a fixedangle flexometer. Results confirm that Secure Covers material is more flexible than woven material (Table 1). Therefore Secure Covers material will follow the contours of the silage surface more

POULTRY

A uniquely formulated product for professional use against flies in livestock housing.

ANIMAL HEALTH Season Long Parasite Control in Cattle Parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE) is caused by gut worms, mainly Ostertagia ostertagi, which lives in the abomasum of grazing cattle. PGE represents a threat to the health, welfare and production of livestock, giving a loss of productivity in both the beef and the dairy industry: impacting on weight gain, carcass quality and milk production.1 For uninterrupted growth through the grazing season, there are two options that offer immunity development and minimal handling. These are a pulse-release rumen bolus or long-acting 10% moxidectin treatment. What about Resistance Management? Accurate dosing of stock is crucial to resistance management (as per COWS guidance1). For farmers concerned not to over-use the ML wormer group, which for use in cattle, includes ivermectin, doramectin, eprinomectin and moxidectin, alternating use of AutowormTM one year and CYDECTIN® 10% the next is a valid strategy for season long control.

ANIMAL HEALTH

Whatever options you have in mind, advanced planning is the way to maintain good animal health and maximise productivity from grassland. What about Resistance Management?

What about flies?

• CYDECTIN 10% Long Acting Injection for Cattle – provides the opportunity for immunity development during treatment. It is a weight related dose rate; representing a cost efficient option for younger stock. No concern about missed doses in the summer when the farming calendar intervenes, coupled with a season long satisfaction guarantee for peace of mind

Flies cause major economic production losses in livestock. They reduce feed intake, reducing productivity, and damage hides. Their life cycles are completed very quickly, giving rise to very rapid population expansions, highlighting the need to apply fly control medicines early in the season. • Flectron™ is a season long fly control tag for cattle, offering labour savings throughout the grazing season. It has a zero day milk and meat withdrawal.

• Autoworm – gives the opportunity to change the class of wormer on the farm as part of a resistance management protocol. With the benefit of not needing to set stock and allowing the opportunity to develop immunity due to the pulsatile release of the bolus, Autoworm also has a season long satisfaction guarantee for peace of mind

ANIMAL HEALTH Worm control with Panacur® Bolus pays off Trials1 have shown that grazing stock protected by Panacur Bolus had substantially lower faecal egg counts; and one bolus makes worming less labour intensive than two pour-on applications.

Planned worm control with Panacur Bolus saves money. Waiting until clinical signs such as weight loss, scours and dehydration are seen in youngstock means that production losses are already stacking up.

Continuous action from the slow-release of active ingredient in Panacur Bolus, fenbendazole, kills all major stomach worms and lungworm. It’s effective for 140 days and prevents the buildup of infective larvae on grazing at turnout. It also allows a small, controlled level of worm development to stimulate natural immunity to lungworm. Poorer growth rates and bodyweight losses mean that in replacement heifers, puberty and age at first calving are delayed. In beef cattle, it takes more feed to achieve target weight gains and more days to finishing.

1. Prof. J Vercruysse: A field trial evaluating the effect of Panacur Bolus compared to eprinomectin pour-on in growth performance and faecal egg count in first grazing heifers. All prices exclude VAT

17

ANIMAL HEALTH

With recent weather, the UK has seen ideal breeding conditions for gut parasites. Consequently, it is well worth reviewing worm control for the new season and ensuring that a cost-effective product like Panacur Bolus – with long term efficacy – is used.

SPRING RE-SEEDS Key to profitable home-grown forage

Spring focus should turn onto managing existing grassland and assessing which fields need to be re-seeded. If the existing sward has winter damaged or full of weed grasses, then it‘s likely that the quality and yield will be compromised. It will, therefore, be beneficial to consider a full reseed this spring to boost overall yield, D value, ME, protein and sugar content. This improved feed quality can help to maximise milk yield and increase live-weight gains – giving better returns for your enterprise from grass forage. When it comes to reseeding, there are three top tips to consider: 1. Ensure the old sward is successfully killed off with a product containing glyphosate before preparation of the seedbed begins 2. Soil sample the fields to determine pH, P, K and Mg indices, then address any problems with Lime and fertiliser 3. Prepare a firm, fine seedbed, making sure you ring roll after drilling to get maximum seed to soil contact Another important factor is to make sure you are selecting the right grass seed mixture to suit your grassland regime. Wynnstay has availability of a host of new grass and clover varieties which have recently been added to the Grass and Clover Recommended List. These varieties have been carefully selected to be included in our standard range to ensure that we offer the very best quality grass seed mixtures. We pick the best varieties from each breeder to capitalise on individual characteristics such as cutting and grazing yields, D value, ground cover scores, disease resistance and seasonal growth so that the mixes produce excellent all-around results.

SPRING RE-SEEDS

To ensure that you are using the correct grass seed mixture for your management system, get in touch with a Wynnstay specialist. The specialists offer bespoke advice on which grass mixes will suit your requirements and, following the reseed, which grassland management programme you should put in place to help get maximum grass yields.
