GRASSLAND FORAGE Quality home-grown forage will always be the cheapest feed available and by improving grass quality and quantity, you can reduce reliance on bought-in feeds, which is a good way to reduce the impact of volatility in feed prices and milk prices. Welsh Farmer, Huw Walters is seeing excellent results from his reseeding programme, which is partly down to careful consideration to the mixture used, and this is something I advocate all grassland farmers to do.
Adam Simper, Grass and Root Seed Product Manager 07808 901179 adam.simper@wynnstay.co.uk
Huw Walters, Carmarthen, reseeds 10% of the farm each year, and his recent focus has been on choosing a short-term mix that would provide a suitable break following maize. “Producing quality silage in early spring is the priority, so we require a mix that has rapid establishment. Our ground is free draining, but often temperatures are low as we’re in the Welsh valleys, so we need a robust mixture, which will provide four to five cuts each year. Leys are currently being reseeded with Wynnstay’s Tower, a short-term mixture, made up of 100% Italian ryegrasses, and it suits our ground well, producing bulky, quality silage. Following drilling in October 2016, the first cut was taken on 22 April, and we continued until October, taking five cuts in total at approximately 32-day intervals. We were really happy with our silage quality, with the first cut producing a D value in the 70’s, 11.3 MJ/kg ME and 19% protein. While our fifth cut was lower in energy, at 10.6 MJ/kg ME, this suits our youngstock. After each silage season, I review the performance of the leys with my agronomist, which helps to make decisions on what fields need to be reseeded the following year. Although management from planting right through to feeding out influences the feed value, selecting the right varieties and mixtures to start with is very important and something we always pay close attention to.
GRASSLAND FORAGE
Reseeding guarantees we’re maximising productivity from the land, but it’s important we choose a mixture that will perform well on our particular farm, to achieve the best possible return on investment.”

SILAGE ADDITIVES Our range of additives is designed specifically for modern silage making techniques. It has been thoroughly researched and independently tested to ensure grassland farmers achieve the best results. Wynnstay Hi-Dri
Efficient grassland management and regular reseeding are essential to produce quality grass. To maximise return on investment it is crucial to maintain the feed quality of this grass when it is ensiled. As we head into cutting season, it’s important to consider the benefits of using a silage additive – particularly after the wet conditions we experienced in the first few months of 2018.
Why use a silage additive when ensiling grass?
Wynnstay Clamp
The use of an effective silage additive reduces losses in the clamp due to spoilage organisms, helping to improve forage utilisation and retaining as much nutritional value as possible. This is essential for many producers who invest a lot, both financially and in terms of time. Although the silage making process can be explained very simply, it is actually very complex and dependant on many factors, such as the natural microbial population, harvesting conditions and the sugar content of the grass. Consequently, silage quality can be variable.
Wynnstay Dominator
However, the fermentation process can be effectively controlled by using an appropriate additive. When fed, well fermented, well preserved silage improves animal performance, giving more litres of milk and better liveweight gain. This in turn can reduce the cost of production and help to increase on-farm margins.

F200 Electronic Rising Grass Plate Meter
56195
Grazing - are you measuring your grass yet? A Plate Meter is the most important tool in any livestock grazing system, as proven by many UK, Irish and New Zealand farmers. ‘Plate Metering’ increases total grass yield by making the most of grass growth stages; growth is at its peak by keeping between 2-3 true leaves to maximize photosynthesis. i.e. move animals into a field at 3-leaf stage and onto the next field at 2-leaf stage. The Plate Meter reads growth in Kilos/DM/Hectare and stores data by downloading to P-Plus software or Bluetooth app, creating ‘The Grazing Wedge’.

£450
GRASSLAND MANAGEMENT
Growth is matched to the herd’s grazing needs and, as with any rotational grazing system, each paddock/field is regularly measured to calculate available grass growth in good time for the next grazing cycle. Plate Metering typically improves grass utilization by up to 30%.

ANIMAL HEALTH Season long parasite control in cattle Given the variability and unpredictability of winter weather, it is hard to predict the parasite challenge for the next year. One thing for sure is that the most cost efficient way to grow animals is off grass and not attempt to catch up over winter when feed costs have to be taken into account. It is vital to ensure that parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE) caused by gut worms does not affect growth rate. This can reduce growth rate by up to 30% 1 resulting in a 30kg difference at finishing for animals2. Young cattle should be regularly weighed and benchmarked against target growth rates typically 0.75 to 1kg/day for youngstock from grass. For uninterrupted growth through the grazing season, there are two options that offer immunity development and minimal handling. These are a pulse-release rumen bolus or long-acting 10% moxidectin treatment.
What about resistance management? Accurate dosing of stock is crucial to resistance management (as per COWS guidance1). For farmers concerned not to over-use the ML wormer group, which, for use in cattle, includes ivermectin, doramectin, eprinomectin and the highly potent moxidectin, alternating use of AutowormTM one year and CYDECTIN® 10% the next is a valid strategy for season long control. Whatever options you have in mind, advanced planning is the way to maintain good animal health and maximise productivity from grassland.
What are my options? • Cydectin 10% Long Acting Injection for Cattle – providing the opportunity for immunity development during treatment. Weight related dose rate; representing a cost efficient option for younger stock. No concern about missed doses in the summer when the farming calendar intervenes coupled with a season long satisfaction guarantee
• Cydectin 0.5% Pour-On for Cattle – a potent and persistent pour-on, with the longest dosing interval of any pour-on product. Benefits from a short meat withdrawal and suitable for all stock on the farm including dairy cows in the dry period (with a six day milk withdrawal) CYDECTIN® 10% LA Solution for Injection for Cattle and CYDECTIN® 0.5% pour-On for Cattle contain moxidectin. ANIMAL HEALTH Achieve peace of mind and cost savings with CLiK® EXTRA The cost implications of blowfly strike are considerable and quickly add up when we consider the negative impact on daily liveweight gain resulting in longer time on farm alongside the costs to re-gather and reactively treat struck sheep. Being proactive and adopting a preventative approach is recommended to allow peace of mind and maintain productivity. CLiK EXTRA launched in 2017 and comes from the same family as CLiK® and CLiKZiN®. CLiK EXTRA provides 19 weeks full fleece* blowfly prevention – the longest-lasting protection on the market – reflecting the lengthening season. Along with CLiK and CLiKZiN, CLiK EXTRA contains FleeceBind®, the unique, patented technology which ensures the product not only spreads from tip to base of the fleece and onto new wool growth but also binds the formulation strongly in place. This means that, when applying to lambs, the product will ‘grow’ with the animal and continue to provide the full fleece protection. From a cost perspective, early treatment is also beneficial: A 5L pack will provide 250 doses based on 20kg lambs versus 166 doses if applied when animals are 31-50kg. This equates to a saving of 37p per animal per treatment if you apply earlier when the lambs are smaller. When we look at the cost per dose per week, you will be saving 2p per animal as the cost for a 20kg lamb per week is 3.9p instead of 5.9p if you wait and apply to a 31-50kg animal.**
CLIK® EXTRA
In addition to the cost benefits of applying CLiK EXTRA early, the 19 weeks protection means you can take control of when you apply the product at a busy time of year, knowing you will have peace of mind for your flock. Always be careful when applying medicines and make sure animals are weighed, the applicator gun is calibrated and manufacturer guidelines are followed. For the CLiK franchise, always use the 4stroke method to ensure accurate administration. * Spreads to areas covered by fleece, other areas may not be protected, including the feet ** Based on a retail price of £185 per 5L CLiK EXTRA. CLiK® EXTRA contains 65mg/kg dicyclanil. CLiK® contains 5% w/v dicyclanil. CLiKZiN® contains 1.25% w/v dicyclanil. Legal category: POM-VPS UK. SECURE COVERS® You know it’s the best here’s how Secure Covers reduce waste In addition to preventing bird and animal damage to silage sheets, protective silage covers should also:-
Bending length (mm)
Flexural rigidity (µjoules/m)
2. Prevent wind lifting the silage sheet
Secure Covers 300g/m2
69
2509
There are two main types of material used to make protective silage covers, woven or knitted high density polyethylene (HDPE).
Woven material 300g/m2
119
7316
1. Be flexible enough to follow the contours of the silage surface holding silage sheets in place to prevent aerobic spoilage
Woven material is made of monofilaments which run straight, horizontally and vertically. However, in Secure Covers knitted material the monofilament follows a complex looped path (Fig 1).
A summary of the results show that:1. Secure Covers are more flexible (Bending Length and Flexural Rigidity) than woven covers. Which means Secure Covers follow the contours of the silage clamp better than woven covers 2. Secure Covers have a greater wind diffusing effect resulting in a greater resistance to ‘wind lift’, keeping the silage sheet in place even on windy days. This effect is due to a combination of:a) The 3-dimensional structure of knitted Secure Covers which is much more complex than a woven silage cover b) Secure Covers are rougher than woven covers (Mean Roughness Depth and Mean Peak Width) c) Secure Covers have a greater Void Volume Secure Covers are protected by patent application GB1704218.5
Fig 1 Surface Infinite Focus Microscpoe images of surface structure
Because there is no single straight line of monofilament, Secure Covers material is inherently more flexible than woven material. The stiffness properties of fabrics, bending length and flexural rigidity, can be measured using a fixed-angle flexometer. Results confirm that Secure Covers material is more flexible than woven material (Table 1). Therefore Secure Covers material will follow the contours of the silage surface more effectively that woven material. This will result in less surface waste.

SILAGE BALE WRAPS We can supply a complete range of consistent, quality silage bale wrap
Our silage bale wrap offers a host Should I use four or six layers of features and benefits including: of wrap?
You should uniformly apply no less than four layers of film. It is essential that at least four layers of conventional balewrap are applied to protect the crop. Whilst many farmers still apply only four layers to silage bales, many more have discovered the benefits of a six layer application and have realised that applying any less is a false economy. In fact, the majority of countries now apply at least six layers of film as standard practice. The result is consistently higher quality silage and little or no waste. In addition, bales with six layers applied can withstand handling better.
• High puncture and tear resistance • Greater resistance to oxygen ingress • Excellent adhesion • Strength and flexibility • UV Protection • Suitable for all bale wrappers
NEW
Importantly, a minimum of six layers must be applied to all bales with DM of 50% or over, bales containing coarse crops and all square bales. Using six layers of silage bale wrap could potentially save you money long term. With more layers of wrap, less air should be able to enter the bale, decreasing spoilage, losses and risk of moulds. A research project at IGER Aberystwyth shows that a silage at 22% dry matter released 28L/t of effluent when it had four layers of wrap and 11L with six layers.
To produce high quality baled silage, grass needs to be tightly sealed with a reputable silage bale wrap and to remain securely sealed throughout the ensiling period. Air ingress must be minimised during wrapping and to achieve this, bales should be of a high density in order to minimise the areas available for oxygen ingress.
Commercially funded research at CEDAR, University of Reading, reported that with four layers of wrap wastage was almost 9% compared with 1% in those with six or more layers. More layers also maintained higher energy content and dry matter value.
Another important factor for baled silage is the optimisation of Dry Matter (DM) content. The drier the forage, the more difficult it is to produce a firm, dense bale without air pockets. Excess air in the bale will result in minimal fermentation and an increased risk of moulds forming. On the other hand, too much moisture will result in heavy bales, more effluent (liquid waste from fermentation) and increased spoilage.
