ANIMAL HEALTH SHEEP SLASH THE COSTS OF SHEEP LAMENESS The drier late summer months are a good time to implement a flock lameness reduction programme and slash the costs of this debilitating disease. The estimated losses from footrot alone equate to around £6 a year for every ewe in Great Britain1. Use of the unique FOOTVAX™ vaccine as part of the industry supported five-point lameness reduction plan can help cut these costs. The five-point plan builds flock resilience to disease, reduces the infection challenge on the farm and establishes immunity. The result is a significant reduction in the number of lame sheep on the farm.

EWES, BETTER USE OF FORAGE: Farmers who give their ewes a trace element bolus a month before tupping are achieving tighter lambing periods. Selenium, cobalt, iodine and copper are all production limiters if not supplemented properly.

Vaccination with FOOTVAX™ is an aid to preventing lameness in a flock by stimulating immunity to (and reducing lesions caused by) Dichelobacter nodosus, the bacteria causing footrot. Vaccination should be on a whole flock basis and timed to coincide with times of high disease risk on the farm. For more detailed advice on how to implement the five-point plan in your flock, contact your Wynnstay Representative or local Wynnstay Store. References: 1. EBLEX. Sheep industry lameness campaign leaflet (2014).

TRACESURE TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR SHEEP Tracesure® Traffic Lights Sheep is a multi-pack containing either 100 or 250 Coprac 4g capsules, Tracesure Se/I & Tracesure Co boluses.

In flocks with shortfalls of these elements the lambing period can go on and on but bolusing with the Tracesure® range of boluses will help.

F ON RI M AG A A EL H E A L T H

Tracesure® Traffic Lights not only tightens up lambing dates but it will also help ewes get more of their protein and energy requirements naturally from pasture. “The potential in good quality grass is terrific, by balancing it with a Tracesure® bolus instead of feeding concentrates the same or better performance can be achieved,’’ said Aled Davies, deputy managing director at Animax Ltd. “It will help to increase dry matter intakes and balance selenium, copper, cobalt and iodine.’’ 4

ANIMAL HEALTH CATTLE BEEF STEERS ON KALE: A trial investigating the production of bolused beef steers grazing grass and kale has demonstrated that trace element supplementation allows livestock to maximise the energy and protein in these crops.

represent a difference of 58kg over a total finishing period,’’ the report stated.

The trial involved beef steers in New Zealand and the results are significant. For the first 65 days after the bolus was administered, cattle grazed daily breaks of kale (cv Sovereign) at an allowance of 3.5kg DM/100kg Lwt with an additional 2kg of ryegrass silage. For the next 42 days, the cattle were rotationally grazed and allocated pasture. Cattle were weighed fortnightly. Steers bolused with Tracesure®-I and Copasure® achieved considerably more daily liveweight gain than untreated cattle in the group. By day 107 the weight difference between the two groups was 19kg, a significant increase. A report on the trial, published by Judson et al, calculated that this represented a £20.21 ($40) return on a £5.05 ($10) investment. “Given a finishing period from 220kg to 550kg of 450 days, this might

TREAT FOR FLUKE THIS SUMMER

At turnout in areas where liver fluke is an issue, cattle are likely to be immediately exposed to relatively high levels of infective stages of liver fluke which will have survived over the winter, becoming heavily infected by mid-summer. Treatment with Closamectin Pour On 8 to 12 weeks after turnout will kill fluke that are present as a result of infective stages ingested immediately following turnout, which will affect productivity during the grazing season. Treatment at this time will also help to reduce reinfection of pasture by eggs from ongoing fluke infections, thus reducing the risk of liver fluke disease in the late autumn/early winter .

All prices exclude VAT

In terms of pasture contamination and epidemiological effect, closantel has been shown to have potency comparable with that of triclabendazole, despite its lower efficacy against the very immature stages. This is due to its stunting effect on immature fluke which significantly affects the egg laying capacity of the fluke as adults. Closamectin Pour On is the stress free and effective way to treat fluke and worms this summer to ensure maximum productivity, and to reduce the threat of disease going into the peak risk period later in the year.

Wynnstay Farm Focus Autumn 2015

F ON RI M A AG A EL H E A L T H

In order to maintain adequate growth rates throughout the grazing season, and to reduce the risk of chronic disease going into the peak risk period of winter, treatments should be included in a strategic liver fluke control program for at-risk cattle during the summer grazing season.

LUNGWORM TREAT QUICKLY TO MINIMISE PRODUCTION LOSSES FROM LUNGWORM Treating lungworm infection swiftly and effectively in beef and dairy cattle is vital to help prevent major losses in productivity, according to Merial Animal Health.

Dispersal of larvae from the dung pats is facilitated by heavy rain and the fungus Pilobolus, which commonly grows on dung pats.

Victoria Hudson, Brand Manager for Merial Animal Health says: “Even when animals recover from the disease, the costs of a clinical outbreak and its effect on productivity and profitability can be substantial. Reduced milk output of affected animals, reduced fertility, cost of replacements and treatment costs can have a significant impact.

The disease can quickly develop within a herd, with untreated cattle returning up to 12,500 times more larvae to the pasture than they originally ingested2. Those which are heavily infected may have thousands of developing worms in their lungs and airways, often resulting in death from respiratory failure.

“A study published in 2011 looking at two outbreaks of lungworm in dairy cows reported losses of £126 per head in one case and £129 in another1. These costs were due to reduced milk production, disposal of dead animals, extra inseminations, laboratory diagnosis and treatments.”

“In dairy cows, EPRINEX® (eprinomectin) provides persistent activity for 28 days and has a zero milk withhold. It provides a cost-effective treatment for lungworm, lessening the impact of the disease on profitability,” Ms Hudson concludes.

July, August and September are the most common months for outbreaks of the disease, but the threat of lungworm can continue until November or even December, particularly in mild and wet conditions.

References

Ms Hudson advises that where lungworm larvae overwinter on pasture, cattle will pick up low levels of infection although they are unlikely to show clinical signs at first. By mid to late summer there will be sufficient numbers of larvae on pasture to cause a disease outbreak if animals are not treated promptly.

ANIMAL HEALTH

Warm wet weather favours parasite development and survival on pasture and levels of pasture infectivity can increase rapidly and present a challenge to grazing animals.

GROWHOW SILAGE CUTS IN 2015 PROVE THE VALUE OF SULPHUR Applying the right levels of Sulphur across the growing season delivers substantial gains in grass quality and quantity.

day, then milk output could increase by 2 litres; 48p per cow. Looking at it another way it is a saving of 0.88kg in concentrate fed or 16p less spent on every cow.

Sulphur is now widely accepted as one of the big four nutrients along with Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potash but many grassland farmers could benefit from paying closer attention to their applications.

Of course, higher dry matter intake means that more forage is needed to meet the livestock’s demands. Fortunately, Sulphur has a beneficial effect on yield as well as quality. Results from trials show between 10%–60% yield increases from Sulphur application. On one farm in Leicestershire, where soil P and K indexes were at the target of 2, GrowHow looked at the effect on yield of using straight Nitram or MultiCut Sulphur (23-4-13 +7 SO3). The grass which received MultiCut Sulphur out-yielded that which got just Nitram. In one field the difference was 0.4 t DM/ha in the other it was a huge 1.8t DM/ha.

The majority of grassland gets plenty of slurry which contains Sulphur but it is mostly in the organic form and unavailable to the grass. This means that the only way to guarantee enough Sulphur is through applications of mineral fertiliser. At the recent Livestock event, Sulphur was clearly the subject of greatest concern with many farmers visiting us seeking advice on which product is best to use for their situation. GrowHow is committed to doing on-farm trials to check how products perform in real-life situations. This year, results from trials in the Midlands and Southwest in 2015 have shown the value of Sulphur.

Grass DM Yield (t DM/ha)

Two trials in Somerset give a good illustration of how Sulphur improves crude protein levels in the crop. One trial took place near Shepton Mallet, the other near Wellington – although they are little further south, conditions on these farms are similar to what you see in Wales and the Midlands.
