ANIMAL HEALTH Helpful hints to protect lambs and calves against coccidiosis As coccidiosis is a serious disease that can result in significant economic losses, managing coccidiosis is imperative to ensure healthy young stock. Managing coccidiosis, and reducing the impact of coccidial infections, depends on allowing a low level of exposure, so that young stock can develop immunity, but preventing levels of infection that will cause decreased growth rates or clinical disease. Follow the guidance below on how to protect lambs and calves against this parasite: Treat all animals in a group: If there is no history on which to base a strategic treatment plan, all animals in the group should be treated following a positive diagnosis of pathogenic Eimeria species on routine dung samples, or immediately after clinical signs of coccidiosis are seen. Take farm history: It is important to get a diagnosis of the species of Eimeria to check if it is a harmful species along with considering the individual farm history. Timing of treatment should be based on the timing of suspected exposure and knowledge of previous outbreaks on the farm. Treat in time: Strategic treatment is often required, and is necessary to prevent losses associated with subclinical infections. Ideally treatment should be given after infection but before the parasite starts damaging intestinal cells and causing clinical signs. This helps to prevent the build-up of environmental contamination, reducing the risk of any animals in the group picking up a heavy infection and suffering from clinical disease. Ensure good hygiene: Water troughs should be cleaned and emptied regularly to help prevent contamination with faeces, and bedding should be kept clean and dry. Good ventilation will also help reduce infection pressure by reducing the build-up of warmth and moisture which favour oocyst survival.¹ Keep animals in similar age-groups: Older animals can act as a source of infective oocysts for younger animals.2 In addition, providing optimum grouping of young stock will help avoid environmental stressors which can increase risk of disease.

ANIMAL HEALTH
Ensure adequate colostrum intake: Colostrum taken in shortly after birth allows calves and lambs to absorb whole antibodies, which gives them some protection in the first weeks of life. As these colostral antibodies decline, calves and lambs become vulnerable to infection.

AUTUMN SEED As we head into the summer months, Seed Sales Manager, Richard Torr offers a first look at winter wheats to watch this season. Yield is often the main driver of profitability for growers, particularly in the western side of the UK, with much of the wheat grown in this region being used for feed. However, this year there is an excellent selection of varieties with high yield potential in each of the nabim categories and the choice of ‘yield or quality’ is quite complex. We have new varieties that raise the bar for yield and the gap between quality wheats and feed varieties is close. In Group 1 KWS Zyatt and Group 2 KWS Siskin will be huge varieties and the new Group 3 Elicit will also attract attention. Whilst all have excellent potential a gap still exists between these varieties and the very top performing feed wheats and we expect these to be the dominant varieties, particularly in the west.
There are three obvious front runners to look out for this season when selecting your high yielding winter feed wheat variety; RGT Gravity, Gleam and Graham. These varieties are strong contenders, showing no real weaknesses
With this is mind, there are three obvious front runners to look out for this season when selecting your high yielding winter feed wheat variety; RGT Gravity, Gleam and Graham. These varieties are strong contenders, showing no real weaknesses from their AHDB Recommended List data. Yield potentials are excellent and all three have decent agronomic packages.

THE THREE G’S LEADING THE WAY THIS AUTUMN‌ RGT GRAVITY The most obvious development comes in the new hard feed wheat variety RGT Gravity, which brings a new standard for yield in every position on the farm. RGT Gravity is newly recommended as the highest yielding wheat on the AHDB Recommended List and it produces those top yields wherever it is grown. It is highest in all UK regions, highest on light land and heavy land, highest 1st and 2nd wheat. This consistency is rarely seen in feed varieties and the opportunity to raise yield levels will be taken up by many growers in 2018. It has moderately stiff straw and a disease package that means it needs a decent fungicide programme. Grain quality is good and seed supplies are reasonable for this autumn.
GLEAM Gleam is newly available for 2018. It is very slightly behind RGT Gravity for yield but does have a slightly stronger agronomic package and will be popular. The disease profile is strong with no real weaknesses. Straw strength is good, and it performs as a 1st or 2nd wheat. It also shows promise as a potential early drilling wheat, though we would not recommend sowing before September 7th. Seed supplies of Gleam are tight for 2018.
GRAHAM Graham was successfully introduced two years ago and has developed into our top selling variety in the west for very good reason.
It has good grain quality, produces its best yields as a 1st wheat, stiff straw and, with relatively slow development, it could be a very useful option for relatively early drilling. It is also one of the earliest maturing feed varieties which adds to the appeal.

AUTUMN SEED
Firstly, it has one of the best resistance ratings to septoria tritici on the list (rated 6.9), a point that will be popular throughout the UK, but particularly so in the western region, where it is the equal highest yielding variety available.

FEED Supamet MP and Dynamet MP
NEW
Fats for improved production efficiency and milk solids As part of our new AminoMatch nutritional approach two new supplementary fat products have joined the range. Supamet MP and Dynamet MP, these contain a blend of fatty acids at the required ratios to meet the differing requirement of early and midlactation, without suppressing dry matter intakes. During this stage of lactation an emphasis needs to focus on using fatty acids which will promote improved feed efficiency.
Supamet MP Is a blend of C16:0 and C18:1 fatty acids based on the latest research done by Adam Lock for early lactation cows. It will provide more effective energy to the cow to enable her to reach peak yields and produce higher levels of energy corrected milk.
Dynamet MP Is best used in early and mid-lactation cows due to lower levels of C16:0 and higher C18 fatty acids. C18:1 which improves the total digestibility of fatty acids and partitions nutrients towards body reserves to help reduce body condition loss during Negative Energy Balance. It also has higher levels of Omega 3 from marine oils proven to have a positive impact on reproductive performance. One of the additional benefits of these products is their ability to correct milk fat depression, a common problem at this time of year. Both of these new fats also contain a supplementary source of rumen available methionine and bypass methionine which have been shown to be effective at manipulating butterfat levels. Fats are an essential part of our AminoMatch nutritional approach when the milk potential from energy falls below the potential yield from metabolizable protein (MP). Supplementary fat will ensure optimum performance.

HEIFERS AT TURNOUT Top Tips for Turn Out
Animals from four months old onwards can benefit from grazing, this can have a significant cost saving
A well-managed grazing system can allow your heifers to achieve 800g-1kg Daily Live Weight Gain (DLWG)
Turn heifers out as soon as grazing conditions allow, in order to take advantage of grass at its peak quality
Calves and heifers should be turned out to low grass covers and allow the heifers to grow with the grass, do not turn them out into high grass covers as this will lose quality later in the season
Calves should receive a minimum of 1kg concentrate at grass, this can be reduced as they adjust to the grass diet. We recommend Heifer Grazer 16 nuts, available in 4t bulk minimum or Rearer 16 nuts, available in 20kg bags, 500kg totes. Both compound feeds have been specifically formulated for growing heifer calves at grass
Consult with your vet or local Wynnstay health specialist to ensure you have an appropriate worming policy in place
Implement rotational grazing in order to maximize grass dry matter yield and live weight yield per hectre All prices exclude VAT

FEED
Remember, calves and heifers turned out for the first time need to learn how to graze, supplementing calves and heifers at grass is key to ensure they maintain the recommended 800g DLWG for two-year-old calving
