WELCOME Welcome to the latest edition of Farm Focus In 2018 we are celebrating our centenary year having been established as a farmers co-operative by a committee of 12 farmers on 17th January 1918. We plan to celebrate this milestone throughout 2018 with a number of fundraising initiatives focused on raising money for children’s cancer charities. We look forward to sharing memories of the company history with our customers, new and old during our 2018 events calendar. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their loyalty to Wynnstay and hope that we can continue to work together well into the future.

TEAT HEALTH Parlour adaptation improving teat health
One of the main causes of teat damage is the milking process, with excessive pressure being applied to the teats from the liners, and an inadequate resting phase at the end of milking, often responsible.
ballooning is often a reoccurring problem and if not addressed, this can cause long term issues by the way of thickening of teat canals. This results in slower milking cows and teats become more difficult to clean causing a build-up of residual bacteria, which increases the risk of mastitis.
Surepulse liners, which can easily be inserted into an existing parlour with the addition of Surepulse inserts, can help reduce teat damage caused during milking and improve cow comfort. Designed to mimic the rhythm of a naturally suckling calf, they create a smoother pulsation, along with shorter transition phases and a longer milking period.
With its proven ability to alleviate the pressure on the teats during milking and minimise damage which may result in mastitis, an investment in Surepulse liners will soon pay for itself, with a single case of mastitis costing on average £250. For a 300 cow herd with a 10% mastitis rate, the total cost to the business would be around £7,500* and therefore it pays to look at ways to mitigate the risk from the parlour routine.
Testimony to the comfort of Surepulse liners is that farmers find cows are more eager to enter the parlour for milking and note less incidences of clusters being kicked off. The technology increases the “resting” or closed phase by as much as 35% compared to normal milking conditions, while keeping the milking phase at optimum levels. This reduces the volume of air in the pulsation chamber and controls the movement of the liner wall. By physically stopping the liner ballooning, the insert is able to prevent the teat ballooning in the path of the liner. In standard milking systems,

ANIMAL HEALTH Scours still claiming too many calves
Unfortunately, the livestock farming industry is still losing too many beef and dairy calves to scours. It remains the most common disease in young calves and accounts for 50% of all calf deaths. But we don’t have to keep suffering these losses. Most calves affected by infectious scours won’t respond to antibiotics. The key infectious disease causes are viral or parasitic, which means antibiotics won’t be at all effective. Calves are most at risk from infectious scour in the first four weeks of life and need a source of continuous protection – through passive transfer of antibodies in the colostrum – to keep them healthy. On many units, normal colostrum may not provide enough antibodies. However, vaccination of the calf’s mother with ROTAVEC CORONA between 12 and three weeks before calving boosts colostrum quality, allowing you to feed high levels of antibodies against rotavirus, coronavirus and E.coli K99 in early life. Give a first feed of four litres or 10% of bodyweight within four hours of birth. This should be followed up with a further feed of two litres within 12 hours of birth. Unfortunately, 8% of calves are born dead or die within 24 hours and 15% of dairy heifers fail to make it through the youngstock rearing period1. Heifer rearing represents the second highest cost on dairy farms after feed, yet there are tremendous opportunities to reduce costs by reducing the incidence of diseases such as calf scour.
Always Use Medicines Responsibly. Please see: www.noah.co.uk/responsible for more information. Rotavec® Corona contains inactivated Rotavirus and Coronavirus and E. coli K99 antigens. ANIMAL HEALTH Reducing the spring rise
Control of the spring rise using CYDECTIN® Long Acting Injection for sheep was determined to be highly effective in a recent study1. The study investigated the impact of utilising persistent and non-persistent treatments to control the spring rise. The persistent treatment of CYDECTIN LA not only controlled the spring rise during the study, but led to lambs having strongyle egg counts below recommended treatment thresholds* for the entire study. The control and non-persistent groups required lamb treatments, losing the potential to reduce lamb doses. Mean Strongyle count in ewes relative to lambing cont

CYDECTIN LA lowered egg output, which, alongside the ewes potentially “hoovering” the pasture led to both a lowered pasture contamination and numerically improved growth rate between weaning and shearing. In this 60 day period, the lambs in the CYDECTIN group outgrew the control lambs by 1.71kg and the non-persistent group by 0.99kg; this is likely due to the reduced pasture challenge1. CYDECTIN® contains moxidectin, a potent and persistent molecule that has been proven to help to control the spring rise1. CYDECTIN Long Acting Injection for sheep has a persistency period of up to 111 days meaning that treatment of the ewe around lambing time can reduce the egg output of those ewes and help to control pasture contamination and the egg output of the lambs2
PARASITE MANAGEMENT
Responsible Use Guidelines • Follow appropriate use guidelines • Use long acting moxidectin when it will be most beneficial for your farm • Decide whether it is best used for scab or worm control • Consider leaving fit/single bearing ewes untreated as these are likely to have a lowered spring rise • Consider utilising an exit Knock Out drench • Always watch out for Nematodirus battus outbreaks in the lambs 1. GRASS Making management your farm focus A proactive reseeding policy, selecting the right grass seed mixtures and attention to detail during the management process are essential to producing quality home-grown forage.
Ten top tips to increase grassland productivity: 1 Testing your soil First and foremost, before drilling a new ley, you need to understand the nutritional picture of the field. It’s also fundamentally important to check that your pH is at the right level
2. Reseeding 15% of your grassland per year By reseeding 15% of your grassland each year with Wynnstay’s grass seed mixtures, within six years you will have the latest, modern grass varieties available within your sward. This will ensure that you maximise the quantity and quality of your forage. Within five years, weed grasses will have ingressed into the sward which will reduce productivity and quality
3. Selecting the right grass mixture There can be considerable differences in the quality of mixture ranges available in the market. This depends heavily on the species used and which varieties are then selected. Choose a mixture that only contains grasses which are on the Grass and Clover Recommended List
GRASS
4. Treat your grassland like an arable crop When creating your nutritional programme, make sure you are investing in the right nutrients to ensure each field produces the highest yields of quality grass. It is also beneficial to monitor these investments along the way
5. Watch out for sulphur deficiency We’re seeing more commonly that grass grown for silage is particularly prone to sulphur deficiency. Carry out a grass leaf analysis to monitor your sulphur levels All prices exclude VAT
14
www.wynnstayagriculture.co.uk
GRASS 6. Early weed control is key Get weeds under control while they’re just seedlings (4-6 leaves), to give the new ley a clean start and remove weed competition which can result in gappy swards. It’s a waste of resources growing weeds!
7. Order additive early Using the right silage additive will help maintain silage quality and reduce spoilage losses. Order your additive early to make sure it is on-farm, ready for optimum cutting conditions
8. Measure, monitor and test Accurate measurements of grass growth rates and density will help you to make the best decisions when utilising pasture. Additionally, analysing silage will ensure you have all the nutritional information necessary for adding your grass silage to the ration
9. Follow Volac’s ‘Cut to Clamp’ guidelines ‘Cut to Clamp’ offers top tips for retaining silage quality from cutting to feed-out. Read more at: www.cuttoclamp.com
Over the winter months, make a pre-season plan to make sure your grassland management details are pencilled in

CALF HEALTH Keeping airways clear can help contain respiratory threat Pulmosure is a complementary feed - designed to be mixed with, or top-dressed on, the calf feed containing eucalyptus oil along with a natural form of vitamin E and organically bound selenium. Pulmosure serves two key functions; while the eucalyptus oil helps clear the airways and allow animals to breathe more easily, the other ingredients help strengthen the calf’s immune system.
immune system, can help support other aspects of good management. By adding it to the feed it is possible to easily supplement all calves in the group simultaneously. Pulmosure can be quickly and easily fed to a whole group of calves at one time, so protecting all the animals in the group. The recommended feed duration is one to three weeks. It can be used in conjunction with other products
Although we are heading out of the time of year when calves are at greater risk from the conditions that can make them more prone to respiratory problems, particularly pneumonia, it is worth noting that the respiratory system of beef and dairy calves is very vulnerable (only when the calf is two year’s old are the lungs fully mature) but sensible management can help alleviate the risk.
Pulmosure can be a valuable component: one in a management strategy designed to reduce the impact of respiratory disease, others include; ventilation, hygiene and the reduction of group mixing and stress.
There can be benefits from feeding supplements that help calves maintain normal respiration. The use of essential oils, particularly eucalyptus oil, is well known to be beneficial in clearing the airways, and facilitating easy breathing in both humans and animals alike.
