GRASS SEED The key to profitable home-grown forage Spring focus should turn to managing existing grassland and assessing which fields need to be reseeded. If the existing sward has winter damage or is full of weed grasses, then it‘s likely that the quality and yield will be compromised. It will therefore be beneficial to consider a full reseed this spring to boost overall yield, D value, ME, protein and sugar content. This improved feed quality can help to maximise milk yield and increase live-weight gains – giving better returns for your enterprise from grass forage. When it comes to reseeding, there are three top tips to consider: Ensure the old sward is successfully destroyed with a product containing glyphosate before preparation of the seedbed begins Soil sample the fields to determine pH, P,K and Mg indices, then address any problems with lime and fertiliser Prepare a firm, fine seedbed, making sure you ring roll after drilling to get maximum seed to soil contact

Another important factor is to make sure you are selecting the right grass seed mixture to suit your grassland regime. Wynnstay has availability of a host of new grass and clover varieties which have recently been added to the Grass and Clover Recommended List. These varieties have been carefully selected to be included in our standard range to ensure that we offer the highest quality grass seed mixtures. We pick the best varieties from each breeder to capitalise on individual characteristics such as cutting and grazing yields, D value, ground cover scores, disease resistance and seasonal growth so that the mixes produce excellent all-round results.

GRASS SEED

To ensure that you are using the correct grass seed mixture for your management system, get in touch with a Wynnstay Specialist. The specialists offer bespoke advice on which grass mixes suit your requirements and, following the reseed, which grassland management programme you should put in place to help get maximum grass yields.

CEREAL SEED Kelim barley - a top choice variety Since being introduced on to the AHDB Recommended List in 2013, Kelim has become extremely popular amongst UK spring feed barley growers. Kelim has proved to be a versatile variety, with high agronomic scores and excellent yield results. One of Kelim’s unique characteristics is its ability to produce huge straw yields, whilst maintaining standing power and resistance to brackling. This makes Kelim safe to grow, even in fertile situations. The AFBI (Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute) in Northern Ireland is the only region that has assessed the straw yield of each spring barley variety. The results indicate that from four years of trials, Kelim produces 14% more straw than Westminster, the next highest yielder and the variety that was very popular with mixed farms for several years. A few words from Kelim growers across the region:

Carl Studley

Bickerton Hall, Malpas

Jenny Rathbone

“The variety has performed well for us and produces good straw and grain. We have previously grown Westminster but found that Kelim produces a softer, less brittle straw.”

Cuttleford Farm, Congleton

“Kelim gives a bold and bright grain with a generous amount of good quality stiff straw.”

Richard Parry Crugeran, Pwllheli Pwellhel

“Kelim provides a good balance of grain and straw. It produces lots of high quality straw in comparison to other varieties. We are very pleased with Kelim and plan to grow it again next year.”

Graham Davies

Windsor Farm, Pembroke

“Kelim is a very good all-rounder and works well for us on a mixed farm. The variety has strong standing ability and gives a good stiff straw – we plan to grow the variety again next year.”

“We are very pleased with Kelim in terms of both grain and straw yield – up to 3.5T/ha. We will grow the variety again, as it’s easy to grow and cost effective in terms of spray.”

MAIZE SEED Reason to get excited about maize Forage maize has become British dairy farmers' main alternative to grass silage in recent years, so selecting the right variety is essential to produce the highest quality feed. The gold choice for 2017 is Reason; the early maturing variety which produced bumper yields of up to 26 tonnes/acre for some growers, making it a popular choice for the coming year. It combines high DM yield content, a high starch value with exceptional plant digestibility to produce the highest ME yield (MJ/ha) of any variety in its class. This outstanding feed quality results in cows producing milk at lower cost per litre, impacting the bottom-line.

Cell Wall Digestibility

ME Yield

56.9% Superb

An alternative choice for growers is Acumen, another early maturing variety which consistently performs well. It has been tried, tested and proven over tens of thousands of acres. With a maturity class of 9, a high starch content and excellent early vigour, Acumen outperforms other varieties under difficult growing conditions, so it is an easy choice for growers who demand reliability.

MAIZE SEED

For a value choice where price is a priority, the bronze option is Eurytmi CS. It’s a medium to late maturity class, with good early vigour and high DM yield of 107%. It has performed well on favourable sites, and presents a reliable, lowcost option for the right site. A wide range of other varieties from Limagrain, KWS, Pioneer, Caussade Semmences & Saaten Union are also available. If you’re unsure about which variety would best suit your system and requirements, the Wynnstay Arable team of specialists can offer advice on all aspects of maize crop production, to help you achieve the best possible yield and quality.

FERTILISER Seedbed preparation for spring crops is essential Preparations for spring crops will be underway, with drilling commencing at the end of February, for many livestock farmers who are looking to produce a valuable home grown quality starch and energy feed source. It’s a reliable way of reducing purchased feed costs, but only if maximum potential yields are reached and the crop delivers a quality feed value. This is why soil nutrient levels are so important. Like any crop, it’s important to get N P and K levels right, and for spring cereals, the quantity and timing of fertiliser applications is crucial. Soil sampling of fields before drilling should be undertaken, with Wynnstay offering various soil testing options depending on the farm situation. Crops drilled before March should have N applied at stem extension, but it shouldn’t go on to the crop before early April, or after early May. Any spring cereals drilled later in the season should have N applied directly in to the seedbed, so it can be readily available for the plant roots to uptake. It’s best practice to apply 40kg N/ha in the seedbed and the remaining quantity should be applied at the 3 leaf stage. It’s vital that the crops receive the right quantity of fertiliser applied at the right growing stage, so crop walking is recommended to ensure application timings are accurate. Product choice is another consideration for growers. Due to the short growing period of spring crops, there is a shorter window of opportunity to apply fertiliser, so a quick responding AN based fertiliser product would be preferable over a slower releasing Urea based fertiliser.

ANIMAL HEATH Lambing preperation key to success With lambing season already beginning in some areas, take a proactive approach to maximise ewe and lamb performance. The majority of lamb losses occur during the first 48 hours of life, but this could be avoided by focusing on ewe and lamb nutrition.

Colostrum Management Newborn lambs have a limited supply of energy so by ensuring lambs have rapid access to a quality source of colostrum, whether from the ewe, or from a manufactured supplement, is crucial for lamb survival and their ability to thrive. Research from the Scottish Rural University College (SRUC) has shown that in the first 18 hours of life, lambs require at least 250ml per kg birth weight of colostrum to meet energy requirements, and prevent hypothermia. However, at least 300ml of this should be Consumed within the first 6 hours of birth to provide disease immunity.

Effective Ewe Nutrition

Supplementing Colostrum

Feeding a balanced ration during the final trimester is important in determining the quality of colostrum produced, as this is the time when ewes start to collect antibodies in their milk. Best practice is to drench ewes three to four weeks prior to lambing. Wynnstay AllVit-T Drench is a highly concentrated supplement containing protected trace elements, essential vitamins and natural antioxidants to help the ewe maintain her mineral status at this key time. This will help ensure vital components, such as vitamin E and selenium, are available for inclusion in colostrum in sufficient quantities be concentrated in the colostrum in sufficient quantities to be passed onto the lamb to support health and vigour.

Not all ewes are able to deliver a quality source of colostrum in sufficient quantities for their lambs so an effective colostrum supplement should always be kept to hand. Wynnstay Lambcol Gold is a quality, easy-mix colostrum containing multiple fat sources to provide short and longterm energy to weak and small lambs when needed. It is further enhanced with essential vitamins A, D and E, prebiotics for effective gut function and nucleotides to help promote protein development. A 25g dose provides lambs with a protein rich, nutritional source required in the first hours of life.

ANIMAL HEATH Responsible wormer use in practice in sheep Healthy ewes with a good immune status will carry a worm burden after winter and there is a reduction in immunity around the lambing period. For a couple of weeks before and several weeks after lambing, the ‘Spring Rise' as it is known, sees an increase in output of roundworm eggs in faeces.

The study also found that lambs grazing with the 2% moxidectin-treated mothers had significantly lower faecal egg counts (FECs) than lambs grazing with the drenched ones.

Research identified that treating ewes at lambing with long acting injectable 2% moxidectin (trade name, CYDECTIN® 20mg/ml Long Acting Injection for Sheep) significantly reduced faecal egg outputs for more than 60 days posttreatment, compared to a 0.1% oral drench of the same active ingredient [ref1].

The Jones Family, Cwm Y Geifr, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, used CYDECTIN 20mg/ml Long Acting Injection for Sheep last year. Glyn Jones stated, “We decided to use Cydectin L A Sheep in mid-February 2016 as a pre lambing treatment. It gave us peace of mind of having a scab free environment at lambing and was also beneficial in reducing the worm challenge to lambs. It saved us drenching the ewes post lambing as we usually do before the sheep go up to the mountain.” S argison N.D. et al doi 10.1016/j.vetpar.2012.04.020 CYDECTIN 20 MG/ML LA SOLUTION FOR INJECTION FOR SHEEP contains moxidectin. ANIMAL HEATH Know your flukicide choices Don’t leave your dairy cows harbouring fluke infestations unnecessarily. After such a mild and wet winter, herds struggling with liver fluke should consider a pre-turnout, flukicide-only lactating cow treatment to clear out adult flukes. Fluke problems are escalating at a time when available flukicide options are restricted. Now there’s only one straight flukicide – oxyclozanide (Zanil®) – which is licensed for lactating dairy cows.

Zanil 5L

57569

Wynnstay Lambcol Gold is a quality, easy-mix colostrum containing multiple fat sources to provide short and longterm energy to weak and small lambs when needed. It is further enhanced with essential vitamins A, D and E, prebiotics for effective gut function and nucleotides to help promote protein development.

If fluke has been diagnosed in your herd, there’s a strong case for treating housed adult milking cows in February and March. At this time of year the animals have been housed for ten weeks or more and there should only be adult fluke present in the cattle. Treatment now with Zanil® will kill these in the bile ducts and prevent them laying eggs that will contaminate pasture. Treatment before lactating cows go out to grass will also help take the pressure off the triclabendazoles later in the year. Zanil® has the additional benefit of only a 72-hour milk withhold, which means it can used during long and short drying off periods. What’s more, no cases of fluke resistance to oxyclozanide have been reported, which means Zanil® can be used in a rotation where resistance to albendazole has been confirmed. It can also be used orally and in feed. The dose rate is 3ml/10kg up to a maximum of 105ml.
