Healthy Calves February is probably the worst month for calf health. The cow’s colostrum is poor quality, the temperatures are low and the pathogens are building up in the straw. Often, in an attempt to keep the calves warm, the ventilation is sometimes restricted. Average temperatures for February in the UK are from 2-8°C. Young calves (0-3 weeks) have a lower critical temperature of 10°C. Baby calves do not tolerate the
cold in the same way as adult cattle and temperatures below 10°C will cause stress, reduced growth rates and increase their maintenance requirement. During a cold spell the calf’s energy demand increases to maintain its body temperature. It also needs energy for its immune system to function. Draughts and chilling breezes will cool the calf and make it susceptible to disease.
What you can do...
4. Buffer the wind using
1. Make sure all newborn calves have
5. Provide a thick bed

adequate colostrum, given quickly, in the first 2-6 hours of life. Colostrum has a profound effect providing protection against outbreaks of pneumonia and scour in later life.
of clean, DRY straw to insulate the calf as they spend 70% of their time lying down
2. Build up a frozen bank of colostrum, using the WYNNGOLD COLOSTRUM MANAGEMENT KIT.
6.
Use ‘Woolover’ calf coats on young susceptible calves. These have increased growth rates by 6kg in a 65 day trial

machine (£2998 +VAT) will provide adequate fresh ,warm colostrum ,15 minutes after birth. This investment costs £1 /calf when written off over 10 years on a 300 cow herd. It is so easy, the job gets done!
7. Feed a high energy
(HIGH FAT) calf milk powder. Feed 10% more powder in cold weather (to increase the concentration), keeping up the calories to grow the calf and fight disease.
3. Provide a sheltered creep area, made of bales, out of the wind, or a calf hutch.

Housing - The RoundHouse Walk into a Roundhouse and the first things you will notice are that the atmosphere is fresh and the livestock are content. The heart of the design is that the warm air rises through a centre ventilation opening. This concentration of warm air creates a ‘draw’ just like a chimney pulling in fresh air even on the stillest foggiest days. But this isn’t just a building for winter because in summer it works exactly the same and the draw of fresh air keeps the animals cool. It is a well known fact that content animals leave more profit and independent trials by Dr Jim Clapp, retired veterinary officer and researcher at Newcastle University, confirm that animals housed in a Roundhouse are less stressed than those in conventional buildings. This is believed to be because the shape allows the simulation of herding behaviour for the animals and they feel safe. The benefits for the farmer are significant. Healthier animals convert food better and it is typical to see a 15% improvement in conversion ratios. Animal health is confirmed by typical reductions in veterinary medication of over 50%. The Roundhouse is available in two sizes, each with an integrated handling system. The RH30 is 30m diameter and houses up to 150 fattening cattle at 450kg. The RH45 at 45m diameter houses just over 300 fattening cattle at 450kg. The Roundhouse is an innovation that is proven to improve animal welfare, livestock handling, operator safety and most importantly your PROFITABILITY. The photograph shows a Roundhouse in the Lake District National Park, this is a reflection of the favourable response the manufactures have had from planning authorities. With almost 60 Roundhouses constructed in the UK and buildings
erected recently in Holland, Ireland and Germany we think the Roundhouse will quickly become the preferred method of livestock housing.
If you would like to visit a Roundhouse please ask your Wynnstay Representative for an invitation, or call me directly for further details. Alan Dickson

Cow Comfort Cow comfort for improved herd health and production On a recent visit to the UK Professor Nigel Cook of Wisconsin University highlighted the improvements in dairy cow performance that can be achieved from improving cow comfort. In the US the DHIA, our equivalent of CIS or NMR, have developed the transition cow index (TCI) which has highlighted the main housing themes which have an important bearing on animal health and performance. These included cubicle bedding type, cubicle size, lunge space, feed space and social stability. Optimising these 5 themes can result in a significant improvement in cow performance in the region of 1154kg of milk worth an extra £320 per cow per lactation. With this in mind our dairy team at Wynnstay have sourced a range of products to help its dairy customers reap these rewards. Two types of cubicles are available; the super comfort and the new Green Cow Safe cubicle. And to accompany these Wynnstay recommend mattresses or sand beds created using pre-formed reinforced concrete cubicle base system. Sand use can be reduced by up to 70% by adopting the new rubber sand safer system. Wynnstay also offer a range of cubicle sanitizers and bedding materials including Stalosan F, Biolime, Envirobed and Chalk lime mix. Correct cubicle size and positioning of the head rail and brisket board are essential if the cows are to lie down for the required minimum of 11 hours per day. For every extra hour that a cow lies down over this they produce in the region of an extra 0.9 to 1.6 litres extra per day. Provision of sufficient access to feed can be optimised with the installation of a single rail feed fence set 30 degrees in from the feed barrier wall, provided eating space per cow is sufficient (60 to 80 cm per cow). In addition, where possible, installing rubber mats along the feed barrier can help to reduce feet problems and increase intakes. Adequate access to clean water can be achieved with Wynnstay’s range of troughs which feature easy to empty systems.

Maize Ensure maize crop success this year - prepare the field, and choose early maturing variety Acumen This year, maize growers can do more to ensure the success of their maize crop by paying close attention to crop nutrition and seedbed preparation, and by sowing an early maturing variety. One maize variety that has proven its worth in the region, even in 2012, is Acumen. This LG variety has good early vigour, and early maturity and is high yielding for both dry matter and starch. 2012 was a difficult season for producing any type of forage, not just maize. But growers who adopted good agronomic practices and sowed early maturing maize varieties like Acumen, were less affected by the dreadful weather – and were able to achieve harvest targets of around 30% for dry matter and starch. Dairy farmer Jonathan Scott of Hanmer Mill Farm is just one example of how attention to agronomic detail and variety choice, pays dividends. He milks 210 cows and averages yields of 8,500 litres/cow/year. The maize fields on which Jonathan is to grow maize
Jonathan Scott, Hanmer Mill farm
are soil-tested regularly. With knowledge of the soil nutrient indices, fertiliser programmes can then be put together to capitalise on the farm’s ‘free’ slurry and FYM, and ensure the nutrient requirements are costeffectively met. Last year, a third of the fields required liming to bring the pH to the target 6.5 for maize.
‘attention to agronomic detail and variety choice, pays dividends’ All prices exclude VAT
Jonathan grows 100 acres of maize, and in 2012 put 90 acres down to Acumen, and 10 to Destiny. Last year, the crops were drilled on the 26th April and the Acumen was ready for harvesting on 18th October – nearly 3 weeks sooner than Destiny, and some 2 weeks later than would normally be expected. Jonathan was delighted with the performance of Acumen, which had reached 11ft in height. He says: “Given the year we’d had, the yields were phenomenal; we cut just over 17.7t/acre freshweight, at 32% dry matter, and 31% starch.
“We feed maize silage all year round. It’s great in winter rations where it makes up 60% of the forage component. It’s also an excellent buffer for summer grazing.” Farmers should avoid the knee-jerk reaction to look for alternative forages to maize, just because of last year’s poor weather. After all, grass and wholecrop silages weren’t great either. Instead focus on good agronomic preparations for the maize crop: Wynnstay agronomists can check the soil nutrient and pH status of the growing site, and advise on how best to make up any nutrient shortfalls. As a Company, we highly recommend Acumen. We have found it to be ideally suited to our part of the country and it has proved its capabilities over many thousands of acres. In fact, from season to season, Acumen has shown that’s it’s a variety that delivers the complete package – good early vigour, early maturity, and plenty of starch-rich silage in the clamp. Rainwater Harvesting Harvesting rainwater from sheds and buildings can help to considerably reduce the size of your water bill (depending on average rainfall and usage). Rainwater harvesting systems collect all the ‘free’ roof water from buildings, filters it to remove any debris and stores it in either an above or below ground tank, from here it can be used to provide clean and economical filtered water for feeding troughs, irrigation, dairy washdown, vehicle washing etc. If the water tank levels are low, the system can automatically switch to your mains or spring/borehole supply, as soon as the rainwater is replenished, it switches back.
Liquivault horizontal underground water tanks Available from 4,400 litres to 39,000 litres (all with a 1.8m diameter) Save money on Concrete, the tanks can be installed in areas where there is no groundwater and can be surrounded/back filled with self-compacting stone rather than concrete. (A 150mm concrete base is required)
The system incorporates an automatic pump so that when a valve is opened, the pump automatically starts and stops when the valve is closed.
‘help to considerably reduce the size of your water bill ’ The pumps can be sized to suit the site requirements and water can be pumped up to 2000 meters horizontally and up to 100m vertically. Each system is pre-packaged and simple to install.
