ANIMAL HEALTH CHOOSING & CARING FOR THE RIGHT APPLICATOR FOR THE JOB Using the right tools no matter what the task at hand makes the job more efficient, effective and easy. Having the right applicator whether injecting, drenching or pouring on is critical to overall good treatment result. The risks using the wrong applicators are many and following a few small guidelines can eliminate things such as: • Over dosing – Wasting money • Under dosing- Risk of resistance and effectiveness of the product • Incorrect administration – Ineffectiveness of the product, animal injury • Less than ideal cleanliness – Spreading disease • Malfunctioning or inaccurate dosing - Non Maintained Applicators
Emphasis needs to be placed on care. So often, people are in a hurry when work is done that they forget to clean and care and the next time the drencher is needed it does not work properly which costs more time and money than the 5 minute cleaning job. Many of todays drench products are viscous and harsh on o-rings making it more critical to keep the o-rings clean and lubricated in between use.
HSW DRENCH-MATIC®
DRENCHING Oral administration, especially viscous product is a challenging job requiring proper handling, technique and equipment. There are range of products on the market today in plastic and metal with various dose sizes and nozzle accessories. Always refer to the Drench Manufactures recommended dosage, applicator and application technique. Metal drenchers, such as the HSW DRENCH-MATIC® offer farmers a versatile, robust aluminum design with a sturdy medical grade plastic barrel and a twin o-ring lubrication system available in 10ml, 23ml and 30ml with lamb and sheep nozzles and a spare part kit for maintenance . Some quick tips to keep in mind : 1. Size Matters – choose a drencher that is close as possible to the maximum dose that you will need, this insures the highest accuracy and comfortable handling
INJECTING Keeping animals healthy is a priority, we spend a lot of money on vaccines and herd health programs, part of this should be choosing a quality vaccinator that does the job correctly. A compromise on the syringe to save a few pounds may end up costing a lot more. Choosing the appropriate vaccinator consideration should be given to the following points. Bottle Sizes • Bottle Mount or Draw off - A general rule of thumb for comfort is 100ml and smaller use a bottle mount, 200ml and larger go for a draw off connection

2. Nozzles – check the length based on the animal size. The HSW DRENCH-MATIC® is now available with a 8cm lamb nozzle and a 11cm sheep nozzle
• Draw off syringes – Using a bottle holder on arm or waist eliminates the bottles from getting in the way of work or tubing getting caught up with the animals and loss of product. HSW ECO-MATIC® draw-off syringes are available in 1ml,2ml & 5ml versions along with a range of bottle holders
3. Priming – Setting the barrel on maximum dosage allows easier elimination of any air in the system during set up which you want to evacuate, prime than adjust downward if needed.
• Protecting the Bottle - When using Glass bottles consider a syringe with a basket for added protection like the HSW ECO-MATIC® that comes with a 100ml/20mm protective basket. The HSW ECO-MATIC® bottle mount versions are available in 0,3ml, 1ml,2ml and 5ml
4. Accuracy test –Set the required dose and test the accuracy of the drencher with a scaled measuring cup before going to work 5. Maintenance - After working, clean and disinfect the drencher according to the manufacturer’s instructions and always oil the o-rings with food grade oil, to keep the piston running smooth. Dry and store in a clean location.

• Bottle Neck Sizes – There are variety of shapes and size bottles in the market, most tend to have either 20mm, 30mm or 33mm necks. Before you go out to vaccinate verify you have a syringe that fits your bottles. Many syringes are packaged with only one connection size. The HSW ECOMATIC®Universal is packed with all three collars, never leaving you unconnected. Dose Size • What Dose Size am I giving? As with drenching, choose a syringe that is as close to the maximum dose you will be giving for accuracy. The further the dose setting is away from maximum dose, the less accurate the syringe will be. Refer to instructions on adjustment settings, some syringes are to the end of the plunger(left) others to the o-ring (right)
• Needles - Keep track of needles before and after working, Count the number of needles to be used for treatment, Count the needles again when the job is done to ensure all needles are accounted for. Change needles, as needed, to ensure sharpness and cleanliness. If you drop a needle, find it and dispose of it properly. Do not straighten and reuse bent needles. Dispose of Used needles and other “sharps,” such as knife blades and scalpels properly and according to regulations to prevent environmental contamination and potential injury to animal caretakers, waste handlers, other livestock and pets
Getting Connected • Bottle Set Up – to avoid small pieces of bottle bung getting stuck in the vaccinator, prior to connection, it is recommended to pre-puncture the bung with a clean needle. Use this ‘pilot’ hole as a base to insert the draw off spike or bottle mount spike. • Priming - Always prime on maximum and dose test into a scaled measuring cup to verify accuracy. The HSW ECO-MATIC® family are designed wit +-3% dose tolerance. This is a good benchmark to look for in your syringe. Needles • Fit the needle to the job, follow these general guidelines
Cleaning Always refer to the manufactures guidelines. HSW ECO-MATIC® recommendations 1. Rinse thoroughly with a hot water & soap mix 2. Rinse thoroughly with clean, warm water 3. DISINFECT via boiling – The HSW ECO-MATIC® is the only syringe on the market that the entire syringe can be disinfected via boiling for 20 minutes 4. Remove the HSW ECO-MATIC® from container, wrap cloth around the handle and pump it dry

ANIMAL HEALTH TREAT FOR FLUKE THIS SUMMER In order to maintain adequate growth rates throughout the grazing season, and to reduce the risk of clinical disease later in the grazing season, treatments should be included in a strategic liver fluke control programme for at-risk cattle during the summer. At turnout in areas where liver fluke is an issue, cattle are likely to be immediately exposed to relatively high levels of infective stages of liver fluke this year, which will have survived over the winter. Treatment with Closamectin Pour On 8 to 12 weeks after turnout will kill fluke that are present as a result of infective stages ingested immediately following turnout.
In terms of pasture contamination, closantel has been shown to have potency comparable with that of triclabendazole, despite its lower efficacy against the very immature stages. This is due to its stunting effect on immature fluke which significantly affects the egg laying capacity of the fluke as adults.
This will help to reduce potential recycling of new eggs onto the pasture, the reinfection of the intermediate host, the mud snail, and the multiplication and propagation of infective stages on the pasture. This should help to decrease risk of clinical disease later in the grazing season.
Closamectin Pour on is the stress free and effective way to treat fluke and worms this summer to ensure maximum productivity, and to reduce the threat of disease going into the peak risk period later in the grazing season.
FLY CONTROL SPOTINOR Fly problems can occur on farm any time between April and November; as these fly populations boom they can have a damaging effect on livestock welfare and productivity. An early first treatment when fly populations are low can prevent this surge in numbers, and thereby reduce burden later on in the summer. ADDITIVE THOUGHTS ON SILAGE MAKING SEASON Following such a mild wet winter, with slurry and possibly fertiliser having been applied late due to poor ground conditions, along with a carryover of old dead grass on many fields, all factors that will influence the quality of the silage fermentation, it will pay to review the silage making process this season. Slurry should have been applied 10 weeks prior to cutting. This is to allow any undesirable bacteria to die off. These undesirable bacteria will challenge good silage fermentation and increase the risk of aerobic spoilage at feed-out. Old carryover grass will have similar undesirable bacteria on any leaves that are dying back, along with yeasts and moulds that can cause heating and moulding of the silage.
Products such as Ecosyl 100 or Wynnstay Dominator – supplying 1 million and 2 million highly efficient bacteria – respectively are shown to not only improve the fermentation, but also boost animal performance. It may be tempting in the current climate to try and cut costs and not use an additive, but with an average payback of around 5:1 @ 20ppl a good quality additive should be seen as an investment rather than a cost.
Nitrogen has the effect of “buffering” a fermentation, increasing the time it takes for the silage to reach a stable condition, and when broken down it releases ammonia reducing silage intakes. Grass will normally take up around two units of N/ac/day. Nitrogen levels are not normally a problem in first cuts, but if slurry went out late, more nitrogen may be available. Targeting to harvest silage between 27% and 32% DM will help. Rapid wilting is vital, the grass wilts most rapidly in the first six hours after cutting, so spreading it out after 3-4 hours will have a big effect on final DM. Bacteria will ferment your silage whether they be good efficient fermentation bacteria or undesirable bacteria, says Peter Smith from Volac.

With the likelihood of a lot of undesirable bacteria already on the grass at harvest, swamping your silage with highly efficient bacteria will help overcome and out compete the poorer bacteria.
