VOLLENDA - Large bulb, good palatability and root anchorage. High resistance to bolting and good resistance to clubroot. Its early vigour makes it ideal for sowing in May to graze in August or, to sow in August-September to use in NovemberJanuary. In Wynnstay trials Vollenda produced the biggest bulk and would graze for the longest period.

SAMSON - Produces a purple tankard shape bulb, which grows out of the ground. Highly digestible therefore great for fattening lambs or flushing ewes with excellent quality forage.

DELILAH - Delilah is a white skinned variety that produces a tankard shape bulb. Delilah is a high yielding variety which is ideal for fattening lambs. It has a high digestibility and good resistance to Mildew. TYFON (Treated with Thiram) - Generally sown in the spring for summer month utilisation by dairy/beef cattle when grass growth is declining. Ideal for dairy cows, it has a massive leaf for a palatable summer feed, but does not dislodge easily due to its small bulb. Rapid growth means it can be grazed in only 60 days after sowing. Although it has frost resistance, once the plant is 12 weeks old it is very susceptible to Mildew and Alternaria. Tyfon is also susceptible to bolting so don’t sow it too early. INTERVAL - The ideal rape/kale cross for fattening lambs and use in outdoor systems due to its fast establishment, disease resistance and palatability. Interval has exceptional yield potential, with some crops being ready to graze within 10-12 weeks of sowing. Interval is more winter hardy than a true forage rape, providing an extended utilisation period that can run into January. Wynnstay trials have shown that sheep preferentially graze Interval over other varieties, suggesting it is the most palatable forage rape variety. HOBSON - True forage rape with rapid establishment, good dry matter yields and excellent resistance to powdery mildew, which makes Hobson ideal for fattening lambs. GORILLA - Gorilla is a dark green forage rape which is best suited to sheep grazing as it is slightly shorter than many current varieties but with good standing ability. The dry matter content is higher than average which leads to high total dry matter yields. Gorilla shows a moderately good disease package is resistant to club root. With correct management Gorilla has some re-growth potential.

This high yielding catch crop is fast to establish and extremely palatable. It will produce huge yields and the kale will help improve winter hardiness.

Forage Rye

INTERVAL FORAGE RAPE VOLLENDA STUBBLE TURNIP MARIS KESTREL KALE GREENGLOBE MAINCROP TURNIPS

The Wynnstay Protein mix has a higher protein content than normal due to the high inclusion of Forage Rape and Kale. It’s winter hardiness is excellent due to the inclusion of Kale and Maincrop Turnips which will extend the grazing period.

“The Early Bite”

• Early Turnout • Zero Grazing Option • Sow after maize or cereals • Good cover crop to reduce winter soil erosion • Sow early to ensure good tillering before winter • Mixes well with winter hardy legumes to increase forage quality & for organic farming with limited N availability

1.50 kg INTERVAL FORAGE RAPE 0.50 kg VOLLENDA STUBBLE TURNIP 5.00 kg GEMINI ITALIAN RYEGRASS

The Italian Ryegrass will improve the thickness of the crop whilst helping to keep the animals clean, and also providing grazing through to the following spring. The inclusion of both Vollenda and Interval will make this mix more palatable and will give a good balance of protein and energy within the diet.

Seed Rates: Early Sowing 240-280 Plants/m2 : (100-110Kg/Ha) Late sowing 300-400 Plants/m2 : (120-150Kg/Ha)

Drilling depth: 1 - 2cm

Row Spacing: 12cm (Narrow as possible) A productive and adaptable forage rye that provides quality fodder with good energy and protein levels suitable for the period between winter feeding and spring forage production. Forage rye grows especially fast in the autumn and in early spring. It’s the most productive cool season grass on low fertility, well drained sandy soils. Rapid autumn tillering and early spring growth means it has high dry matter yield and can also be used to produce a good overall disease resistance.

WINTER FORAGE RYE

GRAZING - Ready March/April - three weeks earlier than Italian ryegrass. The crop should be grazed when it reaches 15-20cm high, preferably strip or block grazed. Because the crop matures so quickly, it becomes lower in palatability and nutritive value therefore Spring grazing is limited to 3-4 weeks. It’s advisable to provide mineral and feed supplements in the form of hay, silage or straws. SILAGE - Harvest crop at beginning of ear emergence (EC 49-51.) At this stage the dry matter yield, crude protein and crude fibre optimal and maximum leaf and stem mass can be achieved. Can be made into big bale hay or silage depending on weather conditions. WHOLE CROP SILAGE - Suited to areas where maize production is marginal. Forage rye as a whole crop has high DM content and complements low DM and a high protein legume silage. Crop must be cut at soft/cheese stage (EC 77-85) when 50% green colour is in the stems. At this time growth stages change rapidly, so do not delay cutting. Can be put in the clamp or baled, good consolidation in the clamp is essential for fermentation reasons. Once opened, aerobic stability in the clamp can be a problem with some high DM whole crop silages, therefore long narrow clamps are most suitable to ensure rapid feed-out with minimal wastage.
