Introduction Previously we provided a handy guide for recording your cattle with your smartphone and uploading it to YouTube. If you haven’t read it, you can find it here. This guide will cover how you can polish that video with a little editing using the built-in tools in YouTube.
NOTE: using your smartphone to market your cattle is easy and effective. It is not intended to replace professional videographers or editing services.
Needed Supplies These are the basics you are going to need for this method – I say this method because there are so many ways to accomplish a similar goal using technology these days; but this is my preferred way that works for me. Adapt it to your needs!
YouTube account (if you don’t have one, visit http://www.youtube.com/ and create one using your computer or smart phone) A video uploaded to YouTube on your account Computer with internet connectivity
Hang in there … I’ll show you exactly what I mean in the following sections.

Log on to your YouTube account. As an example, here’s the landing page I get when I log in to YouTube. If you haven’t been here before, it can be a little cumbersome to get through.
The following instruction will show you the specific steps I take to edit our cattle video.
Video Manager Videos that you own, and have uploaded to YouTube, can be found under Video Manager. To locate the Video Manager, choose the drop down arrow next to your account picture. Then choose Video Manager.

Once in Video Manager, you will have access to all video’s you have previously uploaded. Locate the video you would like to edit.
Video Edit Menu Once the video window opens for editing, you will note a menu bar above your video. This menu bar contains more options for editing. In this example we will be using Enhancements, Audio, and Annotations.
Video Edit: Trim Choose Enhancements from the editing menu. The video will begin playing – I prefer to pause the video as I find it distracting. IMPORTANT: to preserve your original video upload, choose Save As from the drop down menu to create a copy to work with. YouTube will “process” a new copy of the video, and it may take a little time for it to be ready again. This works well if you are concerned about learning YouTube editing for the first time – if you don’t like your final edits, you will not have to re-upload your video. It’s completely personal preference!

Now that your new copy has been made, you may need to choose Enhancements from the edit menu again. Now we will Trim the video. I am quite sure in the show cattle industry, cattle do not simply mosey in to a field and strike a pose. I am sure they need nudging, prodding, and encouragement to get things just right. Trimming the beginning and ending of your video ensures that your viewing audience does not watch such prepwork, rather, they see a professional image. Choose the Trim button. Again, I like to Pause the video because I find it distracting.
3 1 Let’s cover some of the functions in this window: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Take a look at my example below: in the 10 Second Frame window you will find two grey bars, which can be adjusted. The left will be adjusted to trim up the beginning of your video. The right side will be adjusted to trim up where your video will end. As you can see, I have adjusted my video. To preview, press the play button. The adjustments can continue to be made until you are satisfied with the result. If you are not satisfied with the edit and would like to start over, simply press the Revert to Original button. Once finished with your trim, choose Done. *Please note that the viewing pane is split in to two sections: original and preview. You will only note a difference between the two if you are adjusting color. Following these instructions for Trim will not show a difference between the two windows.

Video Edit: Audio Adding audio to your video is a personal preference. Wind, snorting of the animal, breathing of the camera man, or verbal instruction can be a distraction. Add an audio track that will promote professionalism of your cattle operation. Choose a specific genre from the Top Tracks drop down menu. Search for a specific title from the Search box.

Video Edit: Annotations Annotations are a professional way to indicate: Sire, Breed, Lot Number, Upcoming Sale Date, or any other relevant information about your cattle. There are several types of annotations, however, in my example I have added a Note. In your timeline grid at the bottom, drag the Red arrow to where you would like the on screen note to appear. Choose Add Annotation and choose Note. Type the text you would like to appear.

By default, annotations show on screen for 5 seconds. You can adjust this time by adjusting the End time value or drag the right edge of the timeline Note Box. You can place your Note Box anywhere on the screen by simply dragging it to a new location. In addition you can change the size of the font, color of the text, and background of the text box which may make it easy to read.

Video Edit: Publish and Share! Your viewers will need specific information about your video. Sale date, address, contact information, website, email, Facebook, etc. Give it a title such as {RanchName: Lot##-##} For example: Wasson Show Cattle: Lot 15, 18, 19 A good title will allow your video to be found by potential buyers and provide organization in your video manager. IMPORTANT: Privacy Settings: if you want individuals to find your video from an internet search, choose Public. If you want to share your video with only a select audience via email or sending them a direct link like on Twitter or Facebook, choose Unlisted. For cattle sales, I recommend Public to encourage maximum exposure. Note the URL of your video. In my example, it is located in the red box. You can now use this link to email, share on Facebook or twitter, and more. Choose Save Changes If you have created a video using our guides, please let us know and share your link with us at https://www.facebook.com/ClubCattlecom http://twitter.com/ClubCattle Or send us a message through our website at http://clubcattle.com/
