Introduction As a cattle producer, your time is spent tending to chores, preparing for show, and minding your budget. Our easy to understand guide will provide you the necessary information to market your club cattle using your smartphone and YouTube.
NOTE: using your smartphone to market your cattle is easy and effective. It is not intended to replace professional videographers or editing services.
Needed Supplies These are the basics you are going to need for this method – I say this method because there are so many ways to accomplish a similar goal using technology these days; but this is my preferred way that works for me. Adapt it to your needs!
Smartphone (examples include a Droid, iPhone, Blackberry, or others that have an “app store”)
Camcorder feature on your smartphone
Cell Phone Data Plan (such as a Verizon data plan, AT&T data plan… not sure? Your service provider can tell you. In most cases, service providers require a data plan if you buy a smartphone… so if you’ve got a smartphone you more than likely have a data plan)
YouTube account (if you don’t have one, visit http://www.youtube.com/ and create one using your computer or smartphone)
YouTube app on your smartphone (if it’s not already installed, visit your app store to install it)
Hang in there … I’ll show you exactly what I mean in the following sections.

Here’s my smartphone; it’s a DROID 2 Global by MOTOROLA. Nothing really fancy – but it sure looks nice against my office wall color (called “Jalapeño Green”). Verizon has an assortment of support guides for every phone supported on their network at http://support.verizonwireless.com. If you are looking for more specific information on your make/model, check out your phone service provider website, such as AT&T, Sprint, etc.
Next we’ll cover how to take some video.
Video Tips Here are some tips for filming your cattle, before we get to the tech stuff:
Use a nice clean background to show your cattle. For instance, record them walking in a field or large pen and avoid a busy background that can detract from your animal
Make sure your calf is clean and clipped for the internet debut
Hold your camera steady or consider a tripod; jerky video won’t get any rave reviews
Editing will be limited with this form of video so it is recommended to use the Mute button once you activate your camera
Make sure you have a good, tight shot of your animal – video should be able to show the structural soundness of the animal, and as if the prospective buyer were there in person
Keep your final video under 2 minutes long since high-speed internet isn’t available in all rural areas

Turn your phone sideways (landscape) to record video. Once the Camcorder app is launched, press the large red Record button to begin recording. An additional Mute button will appear once recording has started, which will mute your microphone. When finished recording, simply press the white Stop button. Piece of cake, right? We demonstrate below how to use the camcorder feature on our smartphone.

YouTube App Once your recording is finished it is ready to upload. Locate and select the YouTube app in your All Apps screen. NOTE: If you don’t see the YouTube app, you may need to visit your App Store to download and install it (now called PLAY on Droid phones). On my model, the PLAY App Store is highlighted with the yellow box.
Sign in with your YouTube username and password. Choose the more options button (show as four squares on my phone face)
