Editor’s Note: Spring Season Kick-Off This month I was able to go to a few different sporting events in the Valley. The first, a youth LAX tournament, was intense. Yes intense. I had never really paid attention to lacrosse before. I went to games in college but more for the social aspect. At this tournament I learned that I would not be good at lacrosse. Sure I played sports growing up and continue to stay in shape by going to the gym and running, but watching this game was different. I would definitely not have the handeye coordination needed for lacrosse. The LAX-A-Daisy Tournament fell in early April and after a rainstorm, making the field a muddy mess. The players would scoop up the ball and get a stick full of mud, but they fought on. It was definitely an experience I’ve never seen and something I had fun photographing. Next, I attended a high school tennis match. It was great to see the two teams conversing and laughing during the matches. Often we think of high

school sports to be competitive and serious but these players were just enjoying themselves. Opponents congratulated one another and applauded for great plays. Something so different than a field sport like soccer, football, field hockey – you’d never have a player applaud their opponent for running past them on the field. It was a different viewpoint and something to applaud the coaches. Lastly, I was at the Opening Day scrimmages for the Back Mountain Little League teams. This was the first Opening Day and from what I heard from parents, coaches, players, it was a great idea. The event honored the PA Little League State Runner-Up team and brought all major and minor league teams together to kick off the season. I think this was a great idea. It makes the season something to look forward to for everyone involved. Look for photos from each of these events in the pages of this issue.

Senior Spotlight: Mary Tona By Ellen Hoffman Senior year is the culmination of adventures that started years prior. Coughlin senior Mary Tona wrapped up her high school soccer career with many high points. She recorded her 100th goal during Coughlin’s Senior Night game against GAR, something she credits as one of her proudest individual achievements. The Crusaders continued their season earning the District 2 Class AA girls soccer Championship. But, it wasn’t without a little excitement. The Crusaders were down by 2 in the first 20-minutes of the Championship game against Scranton Prep. Tona scored, making it 2-1 before halftime. With only a few minutes left in the game, Coughlin tied it up, sending the game in to overtime. After two scoreless overtimes, the game would be decided by penalty shots. “It was the most emotional game that we’ve ever played,” she said. Through 15 rounds of penalty shots, the Crusaders captured their District Title. “The final score was something like 12-11 for the PKs,” she said. “We would miss one and then think that they had it if they made their next shot but then our keeper would make the save and it just kept going. It was really intense.” Tona received All-Region honors after her senior season, an accomplishment no other Wyoming Valley Conference girl’s player received this year. As for what she thinks her biggest accomplishment was: “It could be a toss up between the 100th goal marker and the All-Region. I’m really proud of both of those.” With all this excitement and achievement, it’s no surprise that Tona is continuing her soccer career in college. This fall she will join the Division 1 St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team. While the decision process took longer than expected, she’s happy with her choice. “We ended up visiting a lot of places,” she said. “When we went to St. Bonaventure the coach really liked me and we ended up coming back again for an overnight and I ended up falling in love with it so I made me decision after that.” Tona is most excited for the competition to continue through her college career. She says the reason she enjoys soccer so much is the competitive spirit. “I liked the competitiveness and how it was

a physical sport but not completely brutal.” Competition within her team is something she’s expecting when she gets to college. “The class we have coming up is full of amazing athletes so it’s going to be a lot more inner-team competition, which I’m looking forward to having. I feel like that will make me such a better player just having that competition every day.” In addition to playing for the Crusaders, Tona also played for club teams like USTA and FC Revolution. “I don’t think I would be anywhere near the player that I am without the Club teams I’ve been on,” she said. “With club you’re training all the time with these same people and everyone is more dedicated on a club team.” By training with these clubs, she made her soccer season last much longer than the average three or four months. For Tona it was more of a year-round sport. “As soon as high school season is over we start again with practices on the club level.” Between her Crusaders and club teammates, Tona is sad to part ways with her friends that she’s grown up playing with. “Some of my best friends are the girls that are on this team. It’s going to be hard to leave that and all the memories we have,” she said. “But I am excited to make new memories with my new teammates.” Senior Spotlight is a monthly feature that will highlight the success and determination of an upcoming 2016 high school graduate from the Wyoming Valley who excelled in athletics and is taking those skills to the collegiate level.
