The NOPAL is a cactus, also called a prickly pear, endemic to Mexico. It can be eaten raw or cooked. There are a little over 1,700 species of CACTI (or CACTUSES). CACTI are SUCCULENT plants, because they store water. They have STOMATA , or small structures that open and close to let gases escape. They also have AREOLES, woolly areas on the stems from which their spines emerge. Spines are normally long, but some CACTI have GLOCHIDS, which are shorter spines. Some of them even have TAPROOTS. A carrot is a taproot, as are radishes and turnips.

Laramie County DUI Victim Impact Panel will be held January 30. All panels are held at LCCC in the Center for Conferences, Room 130, 1400 East College Drive, start time is 6:30pm and cost is $40 cash at the door for those required to attend. The Mission of the Laramie County DUI Impact Panel is to stop drunken and drugged driving and to create awareness regarding the tragic consequences of this event. Panel members share their life stories regarding the issue of impaired driving in the hope of preventing life altering tragedies from continuing to occur. The panel is normally held on the last Monday of every other month and is open to the public. The Southeast Wyoming Estate Planning Council invites professionals in the area to consider becoming a member. The SEWEPC is made up of dedicated professionals in the legal, accounting, financial services, trust and foundation professions working with clients to help them with their estate planning needs. Estate planning is not just for the wealthy. Everyone has an estate, and they want to be able to dispose of their “things” according to their wishes. The Council helps bring different disciplines together for the common good of the client. Meetings are held monthly September-May, the last Tuesday of the month, at noon at the Office Bar and Grill, 1600 East Pershing Boulevard unless otherwise announced at hosted location. Wake Up to Heart Health
Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s Heart and Vascular Services and the CRMC Foundation will host their 14th annual “Wake Up to Heart Health” event on Saturday, February 4, 9:00am-1:00pm, at the Blue Community Events Center, 2401 East Pershing Boulevard. The focus of this year’s event is to “Eat Well, Move More, Live Longer.” There is a $25 fee to register. A portion of the proceeds will be used to buy an automated external defibrillator (AED) to be placed in the community. The AED will be purchased in partnership with the local Mended Hearts chapter. The Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Dandies will be conducting a clinic on Sunday, January 29, at 5:00pm, at the Laramie County Community College Arena, 1400 East College Drive. It is highly recommended that interested candidates attend the clinic. Dandies Tryouts will be conducted on Sunday, February 5, at the LCCC Arena. Interviews begin at 3:00pm and horsemanship evaluations begin at 5:00pm. The horse used at tryouts must be the horse intended for the entirety of the program year. All applicants must sign waivers and wear helmets if they are under the age of 18. Clinic and tryouts are open to high school women ages 14 to 19. Must be age 14 by June 1, 2023.
