Walking grades and terrain
Moderate – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some moderate slopes, expect stiles and/or livestock.
To help you decide if a walk is suitable for you, we assign a grade to each one. The grade of the walk will indicate the level of difficulty and the expected terrain you may encounter. All – relatively flat, surfaced paths, no stiles, suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and Trampers. May include road crossings. Easy – relatively level ground, fields, lanes and tracks, possibly with some gentle slopes, stiles and/or livestock.
Hard – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some steeper climbs, expect stiles and/or livestock. Very Hard - limited paths, rough walking, steeper climbs, expect stiles and/or livestock. Tramper - walk suitable for using Trampers
Come prepared for all weather conditions! Walking shoes are always recommended 3
Thank you to the amazing volunteers who make these events and activities possible Our Great Outdoors programme simply would not be possible without our amazing team of volunteers! Not only do volunteers give up their time to help out at Wyre Council events, they also organise and run their own groups and events - guided walks, beach cleans, conservation days, arts and crafts activities, cycling groups and much much more would simply not exist without the passion and dedication of our volunteers. Thank you to each and every person who has volunteered their time!
volunteeryour... passion Could you volunteer your passion and join the team? If you have a passion for nature and ecology, like to meet new people or just love the great outdoors, we'd love to hear from you! To find out more visit www.wyre.gov.uk/volunteering or call our Volunteer & Community Engagement Officer on 01253 887504. 4
Respect, protect, enjoy!
Enjoy the seaside responsibly
The Countryside Code
The Seaside Code
With more people visiting the countryside than ever before, it's important that we all do our bit to look after our beautiful green spaces. We all have a responsibility to protect the countryside, now and for future generations!
The seaside is a great place to visit and enjoy, but it can be dangerous if you don’t take care while you’re there. Make sure to plan ahead and be prepared - check online for tide times before you go, and know who to call in an emergency.
Plan ahead, take a map, and remember that phone signals vary
Watch the tides, and keep checking so you don't get cut off when the tide comes in. Don't follow the tide out.
Don't have BBQs or start fires in the countryside Keep your dog on a lead (unless threatened by cattle) Stick to the path and always leave gates as you found them Get to know the signs and symbols used in the countryside, so you can find your way Respect other users, local communities and wildlife Leave no trace, take your litter and dog waste home
To read more about the Countryside Code, scan the QR code!
If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard If you are in difficulty in the water, remember - float to live Leave things where you find them, to protect wildlife. Don't remove stones and shells Spare a thought for resting birds and keep your dog under control. Be aware of any restrictions in place, and clean up after your dog, too Mind your step and be aware of soft sand and mud. Sand dunes are a fragile habitat
Scan the QR code to read the Seaside Code in full! 5

Come along and ride adapted bicycles including trikes, side-by-sides, hand bikes, quad and wheelchair bikes. Session dates can be found in the activities listings in this brochure. Explore the mysteries of the coast...
With over 16km of beautiful coastline to explore, Wyre’s beaches and promenades are the perfect place for visitors of all ages and interests.
Seaside Award winning beaches await at Cleveleys, Fleetwood and Rossall. Cycle along the promenades, stroll on the sands or take in one of the stunning North West coast sunsets.
Enjoy stunning views over the coast by visiting Rossall Point Tower, a hub of coastal and environmental information. Find out more about the tower at www.wyre.gov.uk/rossallpoint
A mythical coast full of surprises awaits. The whole family can follow a coastline trail of sculptures. Search the sands for the mythical sea ogre or snap a photo of the iconic Mary's Shell.
Discover a galaxy not so far away at Cleveleys beach! Fans will recognise this stunning stretch of coastline as the filming location for the planet Niamos, in the Star Wars spin off series, Andor.
Our coastline is a haven for wildlife Scan the QR code to read the marine code, which contains advice on how to minimise disturbance to wildlife when you visit the coast.

Preparing for your event or activity It's always best to be prepared before you set out to an event or activity! Make sure that you have the full details of where you are going and information on your planned activity. Thoroughly read any customer information provided to you before you attend. Prepare for any weather. We all know British weather can be unpredictable - we can experience rain to sunshine and hail all in one day! Most activities take place in the countryside, where the ground can be slippy, muddy and uneven. Come prepared for all weather types, and wear suitable shoes and clothing. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to any guided walk or activity to register. All finish times are approximate. Let the activity or walk leader know at the start if you need to return for a certain time. If you have any health conditions, you should always check with your GP or health practitioner before you take part in our walks or activities. Make sure you bring any necessary or emergency medicine with you. Always make the walk or activity leader aware if you have any relevant medical conditions before the activity begins. 8
Don't get cut off! Mobile phones and devices don't always work in rural locations due to poor reception. Take a map or route plan with you in case you get lost and make sure you have the full details of your meeting point beforehand. If you need help in an emergency dial 999 and ask for the relevant service – Police and then Coastguard if at sea or the seaside or Police and Mountain Rescue in rural and upland locations. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, unless clearly stated as a drop off activity. Dogs are allowed on short walks but must be kept under close control at all times and on a lead when requested by the leader. You must clean up after your dog. We can't allow dogs on all walks due to the nature of the terrain, stiles and the need to avoid disturbance of wildlife and farm livestock. If you can no longer attend, please let the organiser know as soon as possible. Refunds will not be given.
Events and activities 2024 From guided walks and social cycles, to beach cleans and ecology days, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy in Wyre's great outdoors. Find an activity that suits you by looking out for these symbols!

Wyre Rivers Trust - Freshwater Invertebrates
Dedicated to improving the conservation of the River Wyre The Wyre Rivers Trust works to conserve and enhance the Wyre catchment, this is achieved through the restoration of watercourses, working with landowners, and educating and engaging the general public. None of the work that we do can be achieved without volunteers. In collaboration with Wyre Council we have regular conservation days which are open to all! You could help us with tree planting, coppicing, riparian fencing, in river management and growing trees. All of our conservation days can be found within this brochure's listing and form part of our natural flood management, river restoration, and woodland conservation programmes. National Tree Week November 30 - December 8 The winter planting season is upon us so it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and get planting. Trees and hedgerows are some of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against climate change. The good news is that we can all make a difference by planting a tree!
50
Woodland management
Throughout the year it is important is to look after the trees, woodlands and hedgerows that we have in our landscape, parks and gardens. In spring and autumn we can check the trees health and welfare, and collect tree seeds to pot and grow on for future planting. In winter we can help to manage the trees and woodlands by undertaking conservation woodland management.
Visit www.wyre.gov.uk/greatoutdoors to find out more and get involved in conservation days and tree planting events in Wyre.

Climate and conservation Help us all to have a better understanding of our planet and the environment Wyre Council co-ordinates and supports a number of climate and conservation projects, such as the Wyre Catchment Natural Flood management project, Wyre Beach Management Scheme and Our Future Coast. These projects are helping us to understand the impacts of extreme weather and sea level rise on our river and coastline, and what we can do to protect ourselves. Citizen science projects such as dune surveys, shore searches, bug and invertebrate surveys, salt marsh surveys, recreational surveys and bird migration studies are instrumental in helping to understand the impacts of climate change and inform better decisions for the conservation of wildlife and habitats. Anyone can take part in conservation days, beach cleans, river restoration, tree and hedgerow management, tree planting, and citizen science projects - find a session that suits you in this brochure and follow the instructions to book. Together we can take action to tackle climate change in Wyre. For more information visit www.wyre.gov.uk/climate-change or www.wyreriverstrust.com Groups and schools can take part in environmental education sessions too!
