Sustainability
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword anymore, we are all doing our part these days. Your garden space doesn’t have to just be pleasing to the eye- it can also help save the planet. Think water features, native plants, recycled landscaping materials and non-toxic weed and pest control. And mowing every square inch is out- leaving areas of wildflowers, tall grasses and the odd pile of leaves is in. This provides much needed resources to our friends such as the bees, hedgehogs and birds.
Self-reliance
If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that the more we can contribute towards our own food supply, the better. Nothing beats home grown produce, and even the smallest spaces can be put to culinary use, with touches ranging from herb gardens and berry bushes to asparagus beds and fruit trees. For some people, that means shunning grass lawn and pavements for a completely edible landscape. For others, it means a small chicken coop or polytunnel, along with some beautiful, edible flowers.
Accessibility
Gardening is fun and good for our mental and physical health, so there shouldn’t be barriers to getting out there and getting our hands dirty. Designing and maintaining a garden that everyone can enjoy has never been easier, with technology such as smart sprinklers and electric tools, as well as helpful landscaping, such as wheelchair accessible paths and raised vegetable and flowerbeds that are custom made to a height just for you.
A home away from home in your backyard
Outbuildings aren’t just for potting sheds anymore! Workshop, gym, home pub or man cave, there are so many uses for a wee building of your own. And with more people working remotely, many of us could use a home office. If you have room on your property, consider setting aside some room for a small building. These days, you can even find kits or sheds that are site ready, complete with sky lights and electric fittings. Just make sure you have any planning permissions in place.
